Re: [Bes-admins] Migration from Groupwise and BES to Exchange and BES - personal address books lost
Why not back it up from Groupwise as part of the migration process to Exchange? From: bes-admins-boun...@dataoutages.com [mailto:bes-admins-boun...@dataoutages.com] On Behalf Of glo...@aol.com Sent: Tuesday, March 15, 2011 1:35 PM To: bes-admins@dataoutages.com Subject: [Bes-admins] Migration from Groupwise and BES to Exchange and BES - personal address books lost Long story short: we bought a company who's running Groupwise with their BES. We're moving them over to our Exchange server with our BES, but users are losing their Groupwise Personal Address Books since we're having it wipe the connection to the old BES before activating on ours. For users near our office, we're manually backing up contacts, but for guys out in the field or on jobsites, this is not an option. Them personally backing up via Desktop Manager is also not an option because, for lack of better words, they don't like email directions so we'd have to walk them through the BDM install as well as how to backup only their address book. From what I understand of Groupwise (I'm not fluent in it), a BB user can only sync to one Address Book at a time. Is there any way around these users losing these contacts without utilizing Desktop Manager? ___ Bes-Admins mailing list Bes-Admins@dataoutages.com http://www.dataoutages.com/mailman/listinfo/bes-admins http://www.dataoutages.com http://www.dataoutagenews.com RSS Feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/Bes-admins - Bes-Admins mailing list is sponsored by Dataoutagenews.com. http://www.dataoutagenews.com

Sorry for not being more responsive to your questions. I am planning the same. We have a support contract with RIM. I asked for a temporary SRP so that I could do this. RIM responded by creating a new support ticket for sending me the SRP and kit, and closing the original inquiry. That was over 3 weeks ago. It is still showing pending. Re: [Bes-admins] Migration
Hi guys, This is the SQL changes that the forum is mentioning, can someone please confirm these steps if they are correct or if there is another way : When SQL is on a seperate server all you need to do is: 1. Setup an new Server 2008 machine and ensure you have at least 4GB RAM 2. Set the local permissions for the BESadmin account on the server 3. Install “Microsoft Exchange Server MAPI Client and Collaboration Data Objects 1.2.1” 4. Stop and disabled all the BlackBerry services on your old BES 5. Take a backup of the BESMgmt database 6. In SQL Manager expand the BESMgmt database and select Tables. In the centre window right mouse click ServerConfig and select Open Table. Now edit the columns below and update them to display the new server name. -ServiceName -MachineName -RPCEndPoint (only edit the name after “\pipe\BESMonitor” ) Still within the ServerConfig table scroll to the MDSAGConfigId column and ensure it is set to NULL. Now close the ServerConfig table and reselect the Tables fold in the left column and locate the MDSAGConfig table in the centre section. Once again right mouse click and select Open Table and ensure you can only see one row containing all NULL values. If a row containing server settings appears select that entire row and delete it. You can now close the MDSAGConfig table and we can now be assure no old MDS Service settings are migrated and they can be installed fresh on this new server. Now select the Tables folder in the left column again. In the centre window right mouse click MDSConfig and select Open Table. Now edit the columns below and update them to display the new server name. -MDSHost -MachineName -ServerName (only edit the name before “_MDS-CS_X”) 7. Now just install BES 5.0 on the new server and point it to the existing database and service will resume for all your users. Only the phase process link I provided does 4.1 to 5.0, but it still doesn't require the Transport Tool! You still have to use move user, but by using the BAS instead of the Transporter Tool. The second article for knife-edge, you are correct. It clearly states in Task 6 to install the same version only. I missed that nugget. Their upgrade guide does not provide any knife-edge cutover steps. Michael, I believe the documentation is correct - encryption key and policy signatures will change, so you will need to re-activate the users. Just as a point of interest - why you are so against using transitional (not temporary) SRP and transporter? We moved about 700 users this way without any major issues. You do not need to move them all at the same time, and you have an option of changing policies to match new BES capabilities. In that method, it uses the same SRP, so that makes sense. If you are using the 2 SRP method, then you do not need to reactivate. If you do a cutover using the same SRP, you will. I've called RIM Support 3 times and also have spoken with my RIM TAM. Everyone has assured me that the Two SRP, single DB upgrade from my 4.1.7 environment to 5.0.2 does not require reactivation by users. Maybe the two SRP, one Config Database is better for you, like I am using? http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/search.do?cmd=displayKCdocType=kcexternalId=KB12304 From: bes-admins-boun...@dataoutages.com [mailto:bes-admins-boun...@dataoutages.com] On Behalf Of Michael McDonald Sent: Tuesday, November 09, 2010 2:43 PM To: A list for BES Admin's to discuss issues, etc. Subject: Re: [Bes-admins] Migration Also, will i need to reactivate my 500 users because the document u sent says : After you finish: After you complete the upgrade process, users must reactivate their BlackBerry devices. Instruct users to connect their BlackBerry devices to the BlackBerry(r) Desktop Manager or BlackBerry(r) Web Desktop Manager to receive new SRP routing and service name information. You still have to use move user, but by using the BAS instead of the Transporter Tool. The second article for knife-edge, you are correct. It clearly states in Task 6 to install the same version only. I missed that nugget. Their upgrade guide does not provide any knife-edge cutover steps. I'm guessing because you can now use the Transporter Tool and 5.0 BAS to move users, which you couldn't in 4.x http://docs.blackberry.com/en/admin/deliverables/16617/BlackBerry_Enterprise_Server_for_Microsoft_Exchange-Upgrade_Guide-T561574-1092971-0615125336-001-5.0.2-US.pdf From: bes-admins-boun...@dataoutages.commailto:bes-admins-boun...@dataoutages.com [mailto:bes-admins-boun...@dataoutages.commailto:bes-admins-boun...@dataoutages.com] On Behalf Of Michael McDonald Sent: Tuesday, November 09, 2010 12:11 PM To: A list for BES Admin's to discuss issues, etc. Subject: Re: [Bes-admins] Migration Hi Ben, Thank you for the valuable articles, however these kbs are for migration of BES 5 to BES 5 or BES 4.1 to 4.1. The Transport Tool is only required when you move users between Configuration Databases and does not work on devices with 4.3 handheld code. We are doing the phased process to avoid updating the handheld code on those devices before moving them to the new BES. After calling support, I received the PDF that I needed to send back within a few hours. This might be what you missed. After sending the PDF in for the new SRP, I got the new SRP in 3 days. I want to make sure that the users will not require re-activation, and i dont want to use the bulk mode of the transporter tool. Can you please guide me step by step to upgrade bes 4.1 to 5.0 with installing on a new server and upgrading the existing configuration database? I have checked one of the forums about some SQL changes but i don't want to risk my environment , please have a look on these changes and tell me is it valid : http://www.blackberryforums.com.au/forums/general-bes-discussion/5176-knife-edge-cutover-4-1-5-0-a.html THX ___ Bes-Admins mailing list Bes-Admins@dataoutages.commailto:Bes-Admins@dataoutages.com http://www.dataoutages.com/mailman/listinfo/bes-admins http://www.dataoutages.com http://www.dataoutagenews.com RSS Feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/Bes-admins - Bes-Admins mailing list is sponsored by Dataoutagenews.com. http://www.dataoutagenews.com ___ Bes
