Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Compilation Tag causing Artist/Album Artist problems
To elaborate: iPeng here uses the "trackartist" if present, NOT the artist. But in the cases shown above, the "songinfo" query either doesn't return a trackartist or a wrong one (IIRC it returned the wrong one). The problem is that with some server versions a songinfo query will return a random artist for the main "artist" (track artist) field. First: you can only have one subscription for the same player and the same command/status (you can have several for different players). Your subscription #3 overrides/unsubscribes #2. I believe one reason for this is that in the past cometd unsubscribes didn't work in Squeezebox Server so this was the only way to change a subscription or get rid of it. And then: why in the world do you do the 1s subscription, that looks completely unnecessary to me. Why don't you just use a timer? I doubt it. I looked at this for iPeng and the problem is that the server can't sort albums by genre. There is an additional issue: there is no genre tag for albums, the genre tag is applied per track. Here's iPeng's order of precedence for what to use for the artwork: 1. "coverart" field in the server status with "/music//cover". I think that's what we are seeing here. iPeng uses the field without interpreting it, just as it comes from the server (no numerical conversion or something). 2. If that's not present, it uses "artwork_track_id", same path 3. If that's not present, too, iPeng uses "artwork_url" as the full URL to be used without further processing. --- learn more about iPeng, the iPhone and iPad remote for the Squeezebox and Logitech UE Smart Radio as well as iPeng Party, the free Party-App, at penguinlovesmusic.com *New: iPeng 9, the Universal App for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch* pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=104496 ___ beta mailing list beta@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/beta

Some people also play albums through the context menu and that would alway still play the whole album without a change but then all the SqueezePlay menus don't know individual discs in multiple-disc sets anyway. I could live with just an extension to the "playlistcontrol" CLI command but that would mean only Apps like iPeng that have their own play logic (probably also OrangeSqueeze or SqueezeCtrl) can use it while the ones like yours or SqueezePad which completely rely on the menus will only know albums but then they don't have menus for the individual discs anyway because these are not in the menu system. --- learn more about iPeng, the iPhone and iPad remote for the Squeezebox and Logitech UE Smart Radio as well as iPeng Party, the free Party-App, at penguinlovesmusic.com *New: iPeng 8, the Universal App for iOS 7 and iOS 8* pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=10 ___ beta mailing list beta@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/beta

[SlimDevices: Beta] Feature Request: Make Disc Number a Selection Criterium
This is not super-urgent but would still make for a nice addition IMHO. I made a change to iPeng that will make it show individual discs of multi-disc albums. What this means is: if you have set your server to group multi-disc albums together (if you don't, the discs are separate albums) then iPeng will show headers identifying disc 1 and disc 2. I can do this because the server knows the disc number and returns it when queried. Fine. What you can not do is filter based on the disc number. So I can't, for example, only request disc 1 or get a context menu only for disc 1. The bummer is that you also can't use it to selectively play. I know this is probably one of these cases where 50% of the people want one behavior and 50% want a different one but it would be nice if it was even possible to only play one of the two discs.

Umm... Sorry but I don't concur. this is not the 80s anymore, how the UX of a system behaves must not be defined by its database design. You may want to adapt the database design to make implementation of your intended UX easier or even astilbe at all but in no cases do you do a certain broken UX just because that's how your database works. Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Bug: Track ordering and disc number tag
You didn't but atrrocity just above you did :) The problem is not that it's a huge issue when I see a wrong order - I can just as well fix the tags. The problem is when I _don't_ see it. Probably in a lot of cases. The underlying issue is a severe problem with iTunes: it sometimes mixes up tags from two different sources and then there is a different tagging scheme from some of your tracks (in one album) compared to the others. While it's clearly an iTunes issue I don't have a good solution (short of manually re-tagging) since I literally haven't found a usable ripping software under OSX yet. Since probably the majority of Squeezebox users (as opposed to the majority of people discussing tagging on this forum) is using iTunes I'm pretty sure I'm not alone with this problem. Treating no disc info and 1/1 as equivalent would fix it probably in 95% of all cases. This is how a good product should work. It should not try to tell the user what he might have done wrong (don't use iTunes, re-tag,...), it should just solve the fricking problem, especially when it comes at no cost for other users (again: I don't think there are a lot of people using this actively, if any at all). --- learn more about iPeng, the iPhone and iPad remote for the Squeezebox and Logitech UE Smart Radio as well as iPeng Party, the free Party-App, at penguinlovesmusic.com *New: iPeng 8, the Universal App for iOS 7 and iOS 8* pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=103476 ___ beta mailing list beta@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/beta

Hm, I think this would still work from iPeng so maybe some other controller Apps could implement it, too, when the time comes :) I don't think it's a general limitation, there's just no UI a for it. --- learn more about iPeng, the iPhone and iPad remote for the Squeezebox and Logitech UE Smart Radio as well as iPeng Party, the free Party-App, at penguinlovesmusic.com *New: iPeng 8, the Universal App for iOS 7 and iOS 8* pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=103210 ___ beta mailing list beta@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/beta

Sure, the ickStream online service needs to be available but face it: the biggest issue is that you need someone to permanently maintain these implementations or they will quickly break. Just have a look at the YouTube plugin, SqueezeCloud plugin etc. And that requirement doesn't go away with an implementation in a local plugin. Someone needs to work on these things on a regular base, that's the restriction. Just look at how much work it currently is to migrate iPlayer to the new protocols used by the BBC. WiMP also completely changed their protocol years ago and the Logitech implementation still uses the old one AFAIK, if WiMP ever shuts that down it would require a complete rewrite, too. For a local plugin one could argue that others than the original author could take over and in some cases this has worked but especially YouTube is a good example of a case where it clearly didn't.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.9 Problems/Bugs
Another one... There's a problem with artist roles in the player status. I often get the composer instead of the track artist or the album artist in the main artist field. What I'm seeing is that whenever iPeng doesn't request _all_ artist roles but just the main artist role (a in the tag list) that artist role often contains the composer. No idea, why, but probably dependent on how you browsed to a track first or something. When I request _all_ artist roles (A in the tag list) the albumartist or trackartist is usually what shows up in the main artist role. So the content of the artist field actually changes based on whether I request one artist or all artist roles. Requesting all artist roles makes retrieving long playlists unacceptably slow so this is something that really deserves fixing More detail is in the iPeng thread starting here: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?51929-iPeng-support-threadp=806839viewfull=1#post806839 --- learn more about iPeng, the iPhone and iPad remote for the Squeezebox and Logitech UE Smart Radio as well as iPeng Party, the free Party-App, at penguinlovesmusic.com *New: iPeng 8, the Universal App for iOS 7 and iOS 8* pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=101516 ___ beta mailing list beta@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/beta
Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Multi Library support in LMS 7.9
hm, lengthy discussion Maybe, but not with me. I don't really care a lot _how_ it works as long as it's consistent. I only store local items in favorites for testing and did a lot of that when recently implementing the favorites editing for iPeng, that's how I ran into it. I feel handling of artists in favorites in general is problematic, they are being stored as a playlist, something they clearly aren't so that's probably the reason for the inconsistent behavior. I've got a much bigger issue with Favorites right now that's probably unrelated and deserves it's own bug: if you use a large playback buffer (like iPeng does, although I've experiences it on an SB3, too), then when playing the whole list of favorites the player can get in some kind of weird state where it seems to mix two streams (with proxied streaming) so that you end up playing one frame from a file, then another one from a radio station and so on... Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Multi Library support in LMS 7.9
And another edge case... Favorites. If you add stuff to favorites and this is not part of a certain library, it will still be shown even with the library filter on, at least for tracks and albums and intermediate levels for artists (didn't try genres). So, if - there are tracks in favorites which are not part of the active library, they will still be shown and can be played. - there are albums in favorites which are not part of the active library, they will still be shown and can be played. They can also be opened and the tracks will show and can be played. - there are artists in favorites which have albums which are not part of the active library, these albums will be shown when the artist is being opened from favorites. However, these albums can not be played and if they are opened, they are empty. Now, while I think all of this is wrong and they should be filtered, there is some specific aspect to be considered If I add something to favorites from an additional browse mode which is not part of the library (a children's music album, for example), _should_ that be shown? I think no because - there is no logic I could think of that would determine how to tell apart items that should or should not be shown by such a logic. - the idea of the additional browse modes overriding the library was to _only_ override it in these specific menus, Favorites, however, is outside these specific menus. --- learn more about iPeng, the iPhone and iPad remote for the Squeezebox and Logitech UE Smart Radio as well as iPeng Party, the free Party-App, at penguinlovesmusic.com *New: iPeng 8, the Universal App for iOS 7 and iOS 8* pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=101701 ___ beta mailing list beta@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/beta

And yes, there are such people. A lot of them. Probably not on this forum, because why would they come here. But people out there outside this forum use things like Spotify, Google Music, Amazon, SoundCloud, YouTube etc. and they are used to quite different standards than a search logic devised a decade ago. If matching album titles appear at the top of the list before albums with only song matches, then it shouldn't detract as much as it is right now, it's just that I won't benefit 95% of the time by the extra hits in the results. I can live with that. Well, I assume you've read my and Michael's comments above: sure it should be like that. But it doesn't quite seem to hang together and seems inconsistent with offering a type of thing to search for, some being full text, and others not. That, too, was also my point above. It would seem better to me to do it similar to other websites and applications. By default Search All, but provide a Search Artists, Albums, or Songs that only searches the respective titles. That's the Advanced Search, isn't it? Sure, that can get as complex, detailed, and specific as it wants to be, that's what it's for. Also, filters should be applied. That's probably how the search _should_ look like: you enter one term and immediately get fulltext results and if that's not what you are looking for you can apply filters to limit it to certain categories. It's the last time I'm going to participate in it, it leads nowhere. It's like you can never fly across an ocean, that plane the wright brothers built came down after less than a mile. Well SoundCloud doesn't have albums, etc. It does have artists and named playlists which are used by a lot of artists to represent albums. And no, it does not just have a flat list of songs per user account. Also, SoundCloud was _one_ of my 5 or 6 examples which were already, well, just examples. There can't be life in this solar system, I looked at that planet called Mercury and it doesn't even have an atmosphere! I don't need to find across all types of entities and then filter the larger list down, I already know what I'm looking for. Yep, but it's still more clicks to go there if you need to go to My Music-Search-Search for Albums than if you go to Search and if you get too many results than select a filter Albums. That's rather fiddly on different interfaces. eg. SB2 with IR remote. Why? You could even put the filters on shortcuts and it's a single press of a button. Still faster than browsing to the specific search menu first. Also, IR remotes and single-line displays are exactly the kind of stuff people refer to when talking about a crappy, outdated system. I know you like it that way but don't assume everybody else does. But in iTunes, I still search for a specific artist, album or song title, less results returned, and I find what I specifically want quicker. Hm, but that's exactly the logic you didn't like above. I do and I'd definitely not be willing to re-tag my 25K files for it.
Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Multi Library support in LMS 7.9
It covers 95% and I don't care about the rest. It also works with stock LMS 7.9 now.. Actually I do have a license for Erland's plugins and that's what I've been using for years but I'd like to replace them with 7.9 eventually because that can more easily filter the whole library across all functionality, beyond what CustomBrowse supports. I still feel that for a lot of users a more simple UI with e.g predefined filters would be quite useful, not everybody wants to create a complex filter using advanced search. --- learn more about iPeng, the iPhone and iPad remote for the Squeezebox and Logitech UE Smart Radio as well as iPeng Party, the free Party-App, at penguinlovesmusic.com *New: iPeng 8, the Universal App for iOS 7 and iOS 8* pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=101701 ___ beta mailing list beta@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/beta

marcoc1712 wrote: 5. My suggestion was here just becouse I think is the more flexible and less costing mods could be done in LMS to enable people use this great functionality without the needs of complex UI or plugins, since every logic will be defined and applied outside LMS. It's OK, will probably work well for you and if Michael or someone else wants to implement it, there's no problem with that. All I'm saying is that for most people this won't solve anything. From what I'm seeing from the iPeng user requests I'm pretty confident that 90% of all Squeezebox users have never edited their tags. A lot of them have never heard of Foobar and some of them (like me) don't even use Windows! These users download music from iTunes or rip it with iTunes (or whatever else their OS or phone came with) and all the tagging they will ever do is what Gracenote, CDDB, iTunes or whatever else in in the backend delivers as their tags. And then there are some like myself who sometime edit some tags upon scanning but never again because they just won't bother about having every last detail in the tagging right. For all of these people your solution won't help. But at the same time, for most of those users a solution based on advanced search won't help because they won't want to learn how that works, too (I had to collect probably two dozen Genres to get that stuff right for me). For this majority of users a good solution is probably a plugin that comes with a set of predefined filters with a simple UI. No children's music. No speech. Classical Music only,... Stuff like that. This is the challenge that will make a lot of users happy. Wy it should take few minutes in LMS and days in Foobar? Because I can set up the query through advanced search in LMS. I don't use Foobar. I don't use Windows. My Music is not on an SMB share. It will easily take a day until I can get such a setup working. And I have no idea how to batch-tag in iTunes. And I don't plan to find out about it (I'm sure there are some Apple Scripts for that). LMS is the place where it's used, if it should be a solution for most users, it will have to work out of the box with whatever automatic taggers deliver.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Multi Library support in LMS 7.9
Thank you!!! That's a dramatic change in performance! BTW: not only for this particular case, all other Albums queries also seem to be dramatically faster now, I think people will love this :) The 17K vs. 26K is full vs. filtered library. Settings-Information shows the size of the active library (maybe it should show both sizes?) and since you can't really easily see which player you have selected in Settings I had selected one with a filtered library. --- learn more about iPeng, the iPhone and iPad remote for the Squeezebox and Logitech UE Smart Radio as well as iPeng Party, the free Party-App, at penguinlovesmusic.com *New: iPeng 8, the Universal App for iOS 7 and iOS 8* pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=101701 ___ beta mailing list beta@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/beta

mherger wrote: Then you should probably write what you're talking about :-P. Because you wrote: Artists-All Albums is fast for me, too, it's Album Artists-All Artists that is slow. Umm, yep. That was wrong, sorry. But there definitely is no Album Artists-All Artists menu (what would it show?) and in the initial post I wrote A good example is Album Artists - still OK. But opening All Albums for Album Artists makes it really slow, something like 6-7 minutes only to load the album list (1K Albums). All confusion over. And I can only repeat what I wrote in my first response: no problem here. Loads instantly in iPeng (a few seconds in the web UI due to slow rendering). And you did switch the library to All Library, then opened Album Artists-All Albums, loaded the menu (completely, until even Z is shown), then switched to the filtered library and opened both Albums Artists (the root menu) and All Albums from there again to reproduce it?

Check other UIs again: all using the same library. In my understanding that's per-player, not per controller. Ah, you're probably right. I think iPeng currently doesn't always identify the change correctly when it's not being done from iPeng. Could it be that the player status doesn't send a notification when the library_id changes? In that case ipeng would only learn about the change when the next regular update comes in. Will investigate. mherger wrote: Is this about right? Yes. Confirmed: I can't play Pippi Langstrumpf in Taka Tuka Land, but I can play all its tracks from the kids' menu. Correct? Again: yes. Hmm... I'm not sure I fully understand the issue, can't reproduce it. I've enabled the no kids music library as the default view. Then I browse Artists - All Albums. Takes about two seconds in the web UI, less than a second in iPeng. I tried both, the unified list as well as the separate Album Artist/All Artists lists. ... Can you check the resources to figure out whether it's memory, disk IO or CPU bound? Artists-All Albums is fast for me, too, it's Album Artists-All Artists that is slow. It's CPU (one core maxed out for the whole time of the query). All other figures are low (176 MB RAM, very little disc IO to my flash drive...) Subsequent queries of the same page are much, much faster and consume less CPU although still slower than Artists-All Albums, it seems to be primarily the first load after selecting the filtered library (in Library Views) that is so extremely slow (stays slow until I have completely loaded the list at least once). So to reproduce it you might have to switch your libraries. BTW, after switching libraries Album Artists-All Albums is slow even with the unfiltered library, albeit not as extreme as for the filtered one. Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Multi Library support in LMS 7.9
One additional info on the latest comment (the one about it working/not working in iPeng): you are aware (hey, you wrote this, so you should...) that the library filter is per-client, so if you select a library view in the web interface, iPeng still might use the whole, unfiltered library until you switch to the filtered one there, too. This is of course how it's supposed to work because it's what allows you to show your library _without_ kids music for you while _only_ showing kids music for your kids. If you have e.g. an iPeng beta and an iPeng App Store version on the same device these, too, will be different clients (at least since iOS 7) because iOS doesn't allow re-use or sharing of device IDs anymore.
