Re: [Ontbirds] Ontario Eastern Whip-poor-will Project - participants and observations wanted.
Hi Everyone - I resent because the links were duplicated in plain text -- sorry; the links below will be easier to work with. Eastern Whip-poor-wills are now back on their breeding territories and we have already received several observation reports from last year's Ontario Whip-poor-will Project participants. The peak period for hearing the iconic call of the Eastern Whip-poor-will is coming up soon, as this crepuscular species calls most frequently on bright moonlit nights in June. This month the full moon is on the 15th so the prime survey window for the Central Ontario Eastern Whip-poor-will roadside surveys is June 8 through 15. Bird Studies Canada is again seeking volunteers to provide casual reports on Eastern Whip-poor-wills and to conduct Central Ontario Road-side Surveys. To find out more about this project and the survey protocol visit www.birdscanada.org/birdmon/wpwi. Includes in the guide is a map link showing available and assigned routes throughout Ontario. A simple online form {www.surveymonkey.com/s/VF89FYD} is now available for reporting the location of any Eastern Whip-poor-will you hear in Ontario this summer. To register for the roadside survey please contact Kathy Jones, Ontario Volunteer Coordinator, at volunt...@birdscanada.org. Please let me know if you are interested in surveying by 06 June 2011. We hope that you will join us in this exciting opportunity. Sincerely, Kathy Jones Ontario Volunteer Coordinator (Canadian Lakes Loon Survey) Bird Studies Canada P.O. [Ontbirds] ontbirds: Survey Routes available in Ontario for the American Woodcock Singing-ground Survey
The American Woodcock Singing-ground Survey (AWSGS) monitors the size of American Woodcock breeding populations in North America. The data collected is a key tool used to guide federal, state and provincial American Woodcock programs. Each year, Ontario participants donate one spring evening, between April 20 and May 20, to survey a roadside route. During a survey, route runners follow a standard protocol stopping for 2 minutes at pre-assigned route points and counting all American Woodcocks seen or heard. Route runners must ensure they survey within a very tight survey window and must enter the data online immediately. Bird Studies Canada has available routes to assign. If interested in surveying, please visit the online route maphttps://www.google.com/fusiontables/DataSource?snapid=S444255xyYd and review available routes (red markers), To register, contact Kathy Jones (volunt...@birdscanada.orgmailto:volunt...@birdscanada.org) identifying your interest and your preferred route choices. Have you ever seen a Barn Swallow mud nest cup attached to a house, shed, or barn? Then please consider reporting it to the new Barn Swallow NestWatch project! Birds Studies Canada needs your nest information to help us understand this special and entertaining bird! It only takes a few minutes to fill in our online form (http://goo.gl/4X9wb) and provide simple yet critical information on the nesting structure type and surrounding habitat. If you have Barn Swallows nesting near you and would like to monitor the progress of the nest, please visit the Barn Swallow NestWatch website (http://www.birdscanada.org/volunteer/pnw) for more information. Although Barn Swallows are still fairly common, their numbers are decreasing rapidly across Canada; however, the reasons for the decline are not well understood. [Ontbirds] Ontario Whip-poor-will Observations Needed and the next peak calling period is June 16-23.
Dear Ontbird members Ontario Whip-poor-will Observations are Needed and the next peak calling period is June 16-23. Bird Studies Canada is asking birders to report any whip-poor-wills heard or seen in Ontario. Observations can be reported to eBird Canada www.ebird.ca or you can use our online form (http://goo.gl/rD9nE) to report any locations in Ontario where you hear a whip-poor-will calling during May through August. Bird Studies Canada's Ontario Whip-poor-will Project aims to increase understanding of the distribution and abundance of the Eastern Whip-poor-will in Ontario. We're also seeking volunteers to conduct roadside whip-poor-will surveys in southern and central Ontario. These nocturnal surveys are conducted during the peak calling periods leading up to the full moon. While the early survey window has passed (May 17-25), participants can still survey during the mid-season period (June 16-23). Volunteers can choose their route by viewing the 2013 Ontario Eastern Whip-poor-will Project Assignment Map (http://tinyurl.com/ahws4e6, now includes map links for most routes) and then email Kathy Jones at volunt...@birdscanada.org to register their plans. Once a participant registers their route they can go ahead and survey - they should not wait for confirmation unless they need a map. [Ontbirds] Outdoor Enthusiasts Needed for the 2005 season of the Marsh Monitoring Program
Dear ONTBIRDS Subscribers The Marsh Monitoring Program (MMP) is looking for interested naturalists to monitor birds, amphibians and their habitats in marshes throughout the Great Lakes basin in both Canada and the United States. MMP volunteers conduct surveys during spring and early summer in marsh habitats, documenting the presence and abundance of birds and amphibians within these biologically rich environments. To date, data submitted by MMP volunteers have been used to detect significant changes in population trends of marsh birds and amphibians, to develop indicators of wetland health, and to provide practical information for marsh habitat management. I would appreciate it if you would let your members know about this rewarding opportunity by circulating or displaying the MMP 2005 recruitment notice (http://www.bsc-eoc.org/download/MMPrecruitflyer.pdf) or by distributing MMP brochures (http://www.bsc-eoc.org/download/MMPbrochure.pdf). For more information about the program and how to participate, or if you would like to receive paper copies of the above materials, please contact Kathy Jones at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or 1-888-448-2473 ext. 212. Re: [Ontbirds] Please join the Rusty Blackbird Spring Migration Blitz
Hi Everyone - I am reposting this in the hopes that you will take the time and visit the Rusty Blackbird Blitz Areas of Interest when you are out and about this month (and next). Thanks for all your support of this important program, all the other program I email you about and Happy National Volunteer Week. :-) ** posted with the permission of the Ontbirds Coordinator** Please Report Your Rusties! Rusty Blackbirds have endured severe population declines. In 2014, the International Rusty Blackbird Working Group and its partners launched a three-year Spring Migration Blitz that challenges birders to scour the landscape for Rusty Blackbirds during this species' northward migration. Year 1 was hugely successful, with 4750 birders submitting 13,400 checklists containing Rusty Blackbird observations. You can help us maintain this momentum - be part of Year 2! Watch for Rusty Blackbirds passing through your area mid March through April. Please submit your sightings to www.ebird.ca using the observation type Rusty Blackbird Spring Migration Blitz. Keep an eye out during the rest of the blitz survey window (March- June) and continue to report any Rusties you identify. All Rusty Blackbird sightings are welcome, but there are the Areas of Interest for 2015 that the working group would like to see revisited. To see the numerous Areas of Interest in Ontario check out the map at http://rustyblackbird.org/outreach/migration-blitz/2015-areas-of-interest. Need Rusty Blackbird resources? There are great resources (including id and location tips) on the Rusty Blackbird Spring Migration Blitz page https://www.facebook.com/rustyblackbirdspringblitz and additional information is available at the Rusty Blackbird website http://rustyblackbird.org/outreach/migration-blitz . [Ontbirds] Happy World Wetlands Day! Bird and Amphibian surveyors needed for the Great Lakes Marsh Monitoring Program
Happy World Wetlands Day! Bird Studies Canada is looking for pro-active naturalists to monitor birds and/or frogs throughout Ontario (and the Great Lakes states). Our 2016 goal is to fill survey gaps and ensure quality marsh monitoring continues. The Great Lakes Marsh Monitoring Program is a great opportunity to take your interest in nature (and birds) one step further and support wetland monitoring and conservation. If you would like to know more visit www.birdscanada.org/volunteer/glmmp or check out the activity map at https://goo.gl/hIeu1i. Read on for more details: Great Lakes Marsh Monitoring Program participants are assigned routes in marshes to track the presence and abundance of marsh birds and amphibians. Task: To survey birds and/or amphibians every season on pre-determined Great Lakes Marsh Monitoring Program survey routes. When: Amphibians are surveyed three times with the timing of surveys dependent on your latitude. Surveys can take a few minutes or a couple of hours depending on the number of stations on that route. Amphibian surveys are a great option for people beginning to participate in Citizen Science surveys. Bird surveys are conducted two to three times between mid-May and July 5th. Surveys may take as little as 20 minutes or up to 3 hours depending on the number of stations on that route. The majority of bird routes require evening surveys. Bird surveys require additional skill as participants need to be able to identify at least 50 bird species commonly found in marshes (without referring to a field guide). Where: Commonly volunteers are assigned to a single route near their home (or work) and can choose to survey amphibians, birds or both. All volunteers are asked to ensure simple habitat descriptions are competed on their route annually. Some routes are readily accessible, others are more remote and require hiking or boating/canoeing to a site. All participants are asked to take a companion with them. More information: www.birdscanada.org/volunteer/glmmp or contact Kathy Jones at volunt...@birdscanada.org ; 888-448-2473 ext. 124. To learn more about each route visit https://goo.gl/hIeu1i and click on the dots for additional information and route map links. Each registered participant will receive the necessary resources from Bird Studies Canada including training materials, protocols, route information and data forms. * This email has been posted with permission from the Ontbirds Coordinator Kathy Jones Ontario Programs Volunteer Coordinator (Canadian Lakes Loon Survey) Bird Studies Canada P.O. [Ontbirds] Assistance needed in Barn Swallow Study,
Published with permission of the Ontbirds Coordinator Assistance needed in Barn Swallow Study, Although the Barn Swallow is still a common bird, the number of Barn Swallows in Ontario has decreased by 65 percent over the past almost 50 years. Currently, the reasons for the decline are unknown. This year will mark the second year of Bird Studies Canada's Barn Swallow surveys in southern Ontario and the information gathered by biologists as well as citizen scientists will help us identify habitat needs as well as guide the design of replacement nesting structures. Bird Studies Canada is encouraging individuals to report their first Barn Swallow sightings of the spring in Ontario to http://goo.gl/4X9wb. This survey will help us find out how many birds have already returned to Ontario, how many will still be returning, and where they are nesting. If you are interested in finding out more about Barn Swallows or how you could act as a steward, please contact Stewardship Biologist, Kristyn Richardson at krichard...@birdscanada.orgmailto:krichard...@birdscanada.org. [Ontbirds] Happy Word Wetlands Day
Happy World Wetlands Day! [posted with permission from the Ontbirds Coordinator] Today we are celebrating World Wetlands Day. This year's theme is WETLAND BIODIVERSITY: WHY IT MATTERS. The goal is to share and raise awareness of the importance of wetlands to biodiversity. Wetlands support a rich variety of plant and animal species - and provide many other ecosystem services, such as controlling floods and preventing carbon from entering the atmosphere. Wetlands in southern Ontario, for instance, yield a staggering 52 billion in ecosystem services per year! But recent estimates show these benefits are under threat, as wetlands continue to disappear. But you can help. By participating in the Great Lakes Marsh Monitoring Program you can conserve wetlands-one of North America's most important - and threatened - ecosystems. The Great Lakes Marsh Monitoring Program is a bi-national, long-term monitoring program that provides a unique and rewarding opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts. Participants visit their marsh 3 or more times each spring and collect information about the presence and abundance of bird and frog species. The data enhance our understanding of the habitat required by these species, and helps implement conservation actions to keep populations healthy. Over 400 volunteer Great Lakes Marsh Monitors complete bird and frog surveys at more than 300 locations each year. Spring 2020 is the 26th survey season of The Great Lakes Marsh Monitoring Program, and we hope to increase the number of surveys across the Great Lakes Basin. Here is the link to our Great Lakes Marsh Monitoring Program web page: https://www.birdscanada.org/volunteer/glmmp . To request a route, please complete the form at https://tinyurl.com/needanMMProute , and remember to provide details on your preferred survey location.
