the smaller Bose is about as good as it gets, really.
You could get one of those satelite radios, but you have to buy a
subscription.
Other than that, any Panasonic, boom box, or especially an Aiwa or if
Onkyo is making any.
One brand that is as much name as performance is BO
(Bahng and Olephson).
They are good, and get design awards from interior decorators. But they
are expensive and with some looking around you can get as good a sound for
less.

You can't beat the Bose. I have two of the Bose Wave system radios and the
sound is very good. You can get a Braille remote, just ask the customer
service representative when you talk with them. The Braille remote also
comes with a Braille manual. You can figure out the system but the Braille
manual is nice It also comes with an audio DC manual. Very Nice.

Claudia, on another list, these systems were discussed. Some say
that for small systems, they sound great. But, they have idiot
controls for tone, so if you don't like the presets, you have no way
of customizing your listening. Some said that if a person shops
around, he can get as a good of quality for less money.

This spring I bought Janet a Tivoli radio. It is a small square device wit
simple tuning knob, it is rechargeable though which is interesting and it does
have an input jack. There is no tone control but the sound is quite good, is
designed to be weather resistant.

The radio is about four inches square and about 8 inches high.

Although the sound is remarkably good for a small radio, clearly not stereo,
the volume isn't particularly strong which is interesting for a device intended
for poolside listening.

Indoors though it is quite adequate.

I have heard them, and have been aware of them since the 80's.
I can say this for sure, expensive and worth the money in the sound
reproduction.
You may spend $2k and it will sound worth $4k.
They had a stupid dolby b that you couldn't turn off, in the earliest
system. I doubt there is anything on it even remotely like that now.
Can't say about the working, go get your hands all over one of them and
see if it will be right for you.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Bose

2009-09-01 Thread Terry Klarich
I think Bose make decent consumer grade speakers. One has to understand what
their goal is. They want to provide the best sound
they can in the smallest enclosure possible. Think of it as range of sound
verses the size of each speaker. Given this, they have
done a good job.

For most folks, as long as the mid range sounds good, the highs and lows can be
ignored. An example is: Bose uses vented woofers
making the enclosure a lot smaller. A lot of sound can be produced in a small
box with relatively little power. The draw back is
the enclosure is resonate over a very narrow range of frequencies. Bose tunes
this so they get a nice booming sound; but, this
doesn't accurately reproduce someone playing a bass guitar. Sounds good when
that car blows up during that movie though.

Bose have developed ways of deflecting the sound from their speakers such that
the sound will both flow directly from the speaker
to our ears and indirectly by bouncing off objects in the room. This is how we
hear naturally anyway. So, our brains can better
relate to the artificially produced sound. So, I wouldn't pay for Bose
technology in an open space. However, for spreading out the
sound from a small enclosure, it is adequate.

Personally, I very much enjoy listening to music. Late at night, I like to
listen to some good blues, jazz or
sometimes classical. A clear full rich sound is very important to me. I like
to hear not the instrument; but, the instrument
being played as will.

In short, Bose sound quite good for every day listening, watching TV ...
However, they can not accurately truly reproduce music
with the depth and warmth they claim.

As most things, it is a compromise. I do think they are overpriced because of
the Bose brand though.

Terry

I'm afraid I can't help you with anything specific. If all you want is
something to listen to in the kitchen you could do just as well sound wise
and a lot better money wise with almost anything other than Bose. Most of
the big chain stores do have a return policy so you can take something home
and listen to it there. If you don't like it you can always take it back.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Bose

2009-09-01 Thread Scott Howell
Terry, I'd agree with you where music is concerned for the most part.
I don't know that the average person really understands all this and
I'm not an engineer, so I tend to follow my ears in all things. As a
bassist, I am very aware of the sound and quite frankly for long wear
and good sound, I have yet to find a pair of headphones that are as
good as the Bose Tri Port model. I literally wear headphones for
about 12 to 15 hours a day if not a little longer and these do not
annoy me or make my head feel tired or my ears for that matter. Of
course I haven't tried every pair in the world, but my last pair which
I really loved broke and I really didn't think I'd like these Bose
headsets. However, I've used them long enough now that I can't
imagine anything else at this point. I do wish there was a good cord
that wouldn't get tangled over time etc. Actually a wired wireless
pair would be great. You know one that didn't need charging, but
didn't need a wire either. grin.
On Sep 1, 2009, at 11:17 AM, Terry Klarich wrote:

I think Bose make decent consumer grade speakers. One has to
understand what their goal is. They want to provide the best sound
they can in the smallest enclosure possible. Think of it as range of
sound verses the size of each speaker. Given this, they have
 done a good job.

For most folks, as long as the mid range sounds good, the highs and
lows can be ignored. An example is: Bose uses vented woofers
making the enclosure a lot smaller. A lot of sound can be produced
in a small box with relatively little power. The draw back is
the enclosure is resonate over a very narrow range of frequencies.
Bose tunes this so they get a nice booming sound; but, this
doesn't accurately reproduce someone playing a bass guitar. Sounds
good when that car blows up during that movie though.

Bose have developed ways of deflecting the sound from their speakers
such that the sound will both flow directly from the speaker
to our ears and indirectly by bouncing off objects in the room. This
is how we hear naturally anyway. So, our brains can better
relate to the artificially produced sound. So, I wouldn't pay for
Bose technology in an open space. However, for spreading out the
sound from a small enclosure, it is adequate.

Personally, I very much enjoy listening to music. Late at night, I
like to listen to some good blues, jazz or
sometimes classical. A clear full rich sound is very important to
me. I like to hear not the instrument; but, the instrument
 being played as will.

In short, Bose sound quite good for every day listening, watching
TV ... However, they can not accurately truly reproduce music
with the depth and warmth they claim.

As most things, it is a compromise. I do think they are overpriced
because of the Bose brand though.

And I should add that if you want to install the radio under a shelf,
they do offer for $50 a bracket that is more like a shelf itself and
you attach to a surface and the radio sits on a tray.

Yes, they are a bit pricey but I plan to buy myself one for

I'd be curious Phil what you didn't like about the radio. Seems most
so far are in favor of it. You'd be one of the few I have heard with
a negative response and of course I'm interested in your thoughts.
Was it the price for the quality? How long have you owned your unit?

There is also a line-in feature, and we use it for listening to audio

Claudia, which system are you referring too? I have one of the Life-
style 25 surround-sound systems that we have had for about five or
seven years and we love it. I am wearing a pair of Bose Tri-port
headphones and I really love them and they are the most comfortable
 pair I have owned.
So, your question is are they good and that is purely in the ear of
the beholder. I have to say that I have been very impressed with most
of their products and the products I didn't much care for was their
computer speakers, the Media-Mates or whatever the heck they called
them. They have a new pair that costs some real money, but haven't
heard them. Now if your referring to the Bose Wave Radio, they are
from what I gather very impressive and not horribly hard to operate.
What makes the Bose products so great is the engineering involved in
reproducing the sound quality they do in the size unit. I personally
find their products to be reasonable in terms of cost for what you
get. Some items are a bit steep I also have to agree, but after all
that babbling, my recommendation to you is either go see one in
person, order one with the understanding you can return it in 30 days
if your not satisfied, or visit someone who has such a unit.
Unfortunately, it is hard to get a feel for this type of product in a
store, so it is nice you get the 30-day return and you can charge 12
payments to your credit card, so you don't have to fund the whole
thing up front on your card or get a card/loan from them. :)
I know that wasn't overly helpful, but it is a tricky question to
answer and I'm sure you'll get plenty of opinions. It'll come down to
whether you enjoy the sound to the point your willing to pay for
 it. :)

For the most part they are over rated. They may sound good on a certain
