[BVARC] Jo is recovering

2019-03-04 Thread Bob Hawkins via BVARC
This afternoon Marlene Keener, Jo's wife, informed me that Jo's surgery
went well and time will tell how successful it was. The surgery was on his
neck. Some calcification had been causing nerve impingement. The surgery
to address this issue should result in improved grip and balance.

Please keep Jo in your prayers as he recovers. If you would like to visit
him, you can see him at Sugar Land Methodist Hospital. He is in room
622. It would probably be best to wait until Wednesday to visit him as
the surgery was today.

He can be reached at 281-274-7000. Ask for room 622.

2019-02-04 Thread Bob Hawkins via BVARC
Here is news today from the good folks at TALARC. All are welcome to
join.

Bob Hawkins

I am pleased to announce another new TALARC net, to commence immediately.
Shannon, W6SPY, from the Henry E. Bergdorf American Legion Post 155 ARC
(N7ALR) in Oldtown, Idaho, will host an additional EchoLink one-hour
monthly net on a newly formed *TALARC* EchoLink Conference node. This new
conference will remain on constantly for all TALARC members and other hams
who’d like to talk with one another at any time. Look for the new *TALARC*
conference on your EchoLink directories and visit this new net on the
second Wednesday of each month at 9 p.m. PST (Pacific Standard Time), or
0500 UTC, beginning Feb. 13. Please welcome Shannon to our national net
operations.

I talked to Shannon this afternoon, he said this conference will be
available 24/7 (except when he is doing the monthly net) for us to hang
out. Said we can do special events too.

[BVARC] N5H- Hurricane Harvey Remembered

2018-07-23 Thread Bob Hawkins via BVARC
As I have told many, I have booked N5H as the special event call sign for
August 18 - Sep 2. Since I booked this special event, life has become
more complicated than I anticipated. It is necessary that I am no longer
able to spin that plate so I can keep other vital plate spinning.

Is there someone who would like to pick up this baton before I drop it? I
can participate in some of the operations, but I am just not able to carry
this one to completion on my own.

Please advise if you would like to receive this baton so together, we can
finish strong.

[BVARC] Correction on raffle tickets related to the food concessions at Hamfest

2018-03-08 Thread Bob Hawkins via BVARC
Please allow me to correct an error that I personally made regarding the
raffle to be conducted by The Texas American Legion Amateur Radio Club at
the Greater Houston Hamfest on March 8, 2018.

Raffle tickets are separate and not bundled with the food sales. So, you
will buy raffle tickets separately from the food. When you see what our
partners have donated, you will want a raffle ticket.

Raffle ticket prices are $2.00 each or three for $5.00. So far we have
donations to raffle from:

MFJ

Main Trading Company

Radiowavz

Ham Test Online

We are working on more contributions for the raffle as well. The raffle of
TALARC is separate from the GHH raffle. Please buy the TALARC raffle
tickets at the food concession stand.

Food prices are:

Breakfast tacos: $2.50 each or go *QRO with two tacos and a coffee for
$5.00! *

*For lunch we have:*

*Texas Smoked Chopped Beef Sandwiches with a bag of chips and a drink for
$9.00. *

*Drinks include:*

*Soft drinks, diet soft drinks, bottled water and coffee. *

All drinks are $1.00.

*Last, we would greatly appreciate the donation of any spare HTs you may
have sitting around your desk doors. We all have them. We are
're-allocating' these hardly if ever used HTs to the vets in need who are
new hams. We appreciate your support. *

Thanks, see you there!

[BVARC] Vet outreach at the VA Hospital

2018-02-13 Thread Bob Hawkins via BVARC
Hey BVARC folks,

I went to see the volunteer adminstrator at DeBakey VA hospital. There is
an open forr there for veteran outreach. Our first step is routinely set
up a table in the lobby area to offer information about ham radio that is
tailored for vets. I am working on that collateral now. The challenge I
see ahead is that the ham radio information table will have to be setup
during regular hours during the work week. It is not needed during all
business hours, but a few each month. Still being a working man, I am
not able to take off enough time to really gather any steam with that
effort.

Maybe there are a few of you retired folks who are willing to help me with
this project. Membership in the Legion is not required. WE are not there
to sell the Legion, just ham radio. If you are available to help me
reach our to our vets at the VA hospital for up to four hours per month,
please contact me by email. I will give more detail about the effort and
can provide all the support, equipment and collateral material needed to
make this work.

>From the first trip there, i found a key volunteer who is now studying for
his ham license. He will be of some help to get things going.

video editing and will update all as the presentation videos become available
on YouTube.

Special thank you'd to Avery Russell who sat behind the video camera all day

[BVARC] Ceasing my efforts for Camp Hope Amateur Radio

2017-01-06 Thread Bob Hawkins via BVARC
Dear BVARC,

It is with sadness that I am reporting to you that Camp Hope Amateur Radio
Club is being discontinued. Well, it actually never got started. I still
believe that amateur radio can and does indeed have an impact on a warrior's
PTSD recovery. But, unfortunately, despite the efforts of all of us, Camp
Hope Amateur Radio is not going to happen now or at any point in the
foreseeable future. We have received many donations of equipment to set up
the ham club. If you donated gear and would like to have it back, we would
gladly give it back to you. Otherwise, I will re-direct the donated
equipment to Ham Radios for Heroes. (www.hamradio4heroes.com) I intend to
contact the equipment donors in the coming week to address this.

I am certain that most all of you will feel as disappointed as I do about
this matter.

Thank you,

[BVARC] Thank you for the BVARC FOLKS WHO CAME BY

2016-10-16 Thread Bob Hawkins via BVARC
Dear BVARC,

I want to say thank you to the hams who stopped by the Camp Hope annual BBQ
yesterday. Jeff Mc Millen and two of his sons helped me for two days. He
put in a lot of effort and sweat. Thank you Jeff, could not have not done
it without you! Jerry Muller hobbled all the way on his recently operated
foot to join us for a while. Ravi Ratnala came by to be an additional team
member for the UT team.

I understand that there was some confusion in how to get to Camp Hope due to
the way Google maps gives directions. If that was your situation, I am
sorry for the confusion. Last year we had eight volunteers, this year,
three.

>From Harris County ARES we had Teresa Williams and Mike Ulrich. Thanks
Mike and Teresa!

This is going to be a long term effort that will help transform the lives of
our warriors who experience depression related to combat trauma. That is
how I enjoy the hobby.

[BVARC] Camp Hope K0D Contest Teams

2016-09-14 Thread Bob Hawkins via BVARC
As we have invited the UT and TAMU amateur radio clubs to contest each
other at the Camp Hope special event, I would like to find an alumnus from
each school to be the liaison to each club. This will involve working with
them on the day of the event and making contact them in advance to make
sure they have everything needed to make their event successful.

Please contact me if you are a UT or A alum and would like to help me
make these clubs feel very welcome. This is a vital function to the
success of our college club contest aspect of the K0D special event.

[BVARC] Camp Hope Special Event Station

2016-09-12 Thread Bob Hawkins via BVARC
I have talked a lot about the K0D special event station at Camp Hope on
October 15th, 2016, on the repeater and our Facebook page. But, let me
take a minute to discuss it on the repeater.

About 22 of our military heroes commit suicide every day. Yes, almost
7000 each year. PTSDUSA has established Camp Hope, here in Houston, as a
place to recover.

With the help of the USS Lexington, W5LEX, we made 67 contacts last
year. The Lexington is on board again this year. And, we have a new spin
as well. Texas A and UT amateur radio clubs are coming to help us make
contacts by competing with each for the most QSOs. I am collecting prizes
for the clubs. So far, Ham Radio Outlet has sent me two of 2016 ARRL
manuals.

Can you help me? Here are some needs to be met to make this come off well.

1. Volunteers are needed for setup on Friday October 14th and tear down
October 15th. We will also need operators for the K0D station in the QSO
with W5LEX.

2. Volunteers are needed to be BVARC representatives at the UT ham radio
club tent and the Texas A tent. The main role here is to be an
encourager and elmer to the college students. If you prefer one school
over another, then by all means, pick that club. The big purpose here is
to demonstrate the University Clubs is that BVARC is here to help them with
anything ham radio.
These students are very bright and enjoyable to be around. I have enjoyed
all my conversations with them.

3. We need folks to talk with the visitors about ham radio, the kinds of
things we do and why they should become hams too. If you are in sales for
a living, I want your help with this.

4. If none of these things appeal to you, then please at least make
contact with us during the special event. HF preferred, but if you can't
do HF, we will have two VHF repeaters available to contact the college of
your choice, UT or A

5. If you do social media, please spread our post about the event. You
can find these post on FB at Camp Hiope ARC or the BVARC FB page.

If you can come, please email me to let me know what tasks you would like
to do.

Thank you!

[BVARC] The USS Cavalla- The Lucky Cavalla

2016-06-03 Thread Bob Hawkins via BVARC
In anticipation of museum ships weekend tomorrow, I want to share this
youtube video about the Cavalla. It turns out that the Cavalla was (at that
time) the only naval vessel to have been commissioned on leap year day,
February 29.

On her maiden patrol Cavalla, en route to her station in the eastern
Philippines, made contact with a large Japanese task force on 17 June.
Cavalla tracked the force for several hours, relaying information which
contributed to the United States victory in the Battle of the Philippine Sea
(commonly known as the "Marianas Turkey Shoot") on 19 -- 20 June 1944. On 19
June she caught the carrier Shōkaku recovering planes, and quickly fired a
spread of six torpedoes for three hits, enough to sink Shōkaku at 11°50′N
137°57′E. After a severe depth charging by three destroyers, Cavalla
escaped to continue her patrol, with relatively minor damage by depth
charges of Urakaze. The feat earned her a Presidential Unit Citation.

[BVARC] Video of Riley Hollingsworth

2016-03-25 Thread Bob Hawkins via BVARC

I was able to video several of the presentations at hamfest last weekend.
The video of Pete Olson is on the BVARC Facebook page. Since the video of
Riley Hollingsworth is of poor audio quality I will not be posting it to
Youtube or any other social media. The hiss in the video is profound and
distracting, but the speaker can be heard sufficiently well. If you missed
Riley's presentation or just want to hear it again, send me an email at
bobhawki...@gmail.com and I will be glad to send you a link to download it.
I will ask for that you promise to not upload it to social media of any type
nor distribute it to anyone other than a BVARC member.

I have identified the fixes that need to be made to shoot video with high
quality audio next year and I look forward to bringing well produced, high
quality content video to our Facebook and YouTube pages in the future.

[BVARC] Camp Hope Ham Radio

[BVARC] Thanks for the support

2015-10-12 Thread Bob Hawkins via BVARC
BVARC friends,

I want to thank my friends from for the support you gave at the Camp Hope
Annual BBQ cookoff. We had a wonderful time fellowshipping together with
the visitors and on the radio. While I have not yet compiled the log, I
think we had about 60 contacts total across 20 and 40 meters. The dual QSO
idea with the Lexington, W5LEX worked out very well and turned our event
into a multi-site event. Two stations working together in a net-control
scenario is consistent with our tradition of being a "radio-relay league"
The folks at W5LEX had a great time as well. One Facebook contact from
W5LWEX reported that they could almost smell the BBQ across the air.

There are many people to thank. I want to specifically thank Ron Litt,
Nathan Vessey and Steve Friedman and Mike Hardwick. These hams played vital
roles in making this work. Jim Mehrmann, the director of outreach for Camp
Hope has expressed gratitude for our efforts. He has started studying for
his technician license and is expected to take the tech test in the next 60
days.

Where do we go from here.

Our next step is to schedule a tech license prep class and ve session.
Once we have a few licensed operators, we will initiate a vhf/uhf station
at Camp Hope and start an echolink net for veterans. It appears that the
American Legion is already doing several vet nets. We will turn to them for
their assistance as we move forward.

As we move forward, please consider helping us support our vets at Camp
Hope. They need friends. As these new technicians come on .94, please
welcome them. Get to know them, find out if you can help them with job
referrals. Help them integrate with us in the hobby. Saturday was an
outstanding experience. I am asking the club to do anything, but I am
asking each of us as individuals to do what we can.

This is a promo video about Camp Hope.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5td0WR5Iww

Let's use our hobby to transform lives and have fun.As in the many
events in which our club participates, that is "how we roll"

Thanks,

Bob Hawkins

[BVARC] Volunteers needed to have fun and eat BBQ

2015-09-22 Thread Bob Hawkins via BVARC
I am starting to get a head count on who can join me at Camp Hope to
demonstrate some fun with ham radio on October 10th.

Initially, we need 5 volunteers to help setup from 1:00 pm on Friday
October 9th to completion. I expect the set up to take about 3 hours.

On Saturday, our operational time will begin at 10:00AM. We need
volunteers showing up not later 9:30 am. The radio shifts will be about
one hour each on two stations. Two people are needed to meet, greet and
talk about ham radio as well.

The goal of this special event is as much about having fun talking with
people about ham radio as it it making contacts for the log. The measure
of our success will be 1) Did we have a lot of fun, 2) Did we make new
friends who are now on track becoming hams and 3) making a lot of
contacts.

If you can come, please email me your name, email and phone number. Also
let me know the time frame that you can stay there. I will then fill in
the schedule to determine where we may have a shortage of people.

If you want to know more, please see the Camp Hope website, www.pstdusa.org.
Also, feel free to call me if I can answer any questions for you.

Thank you,

[BVARC] Remote ops demo

2015-07-22 Thread Bob Hawkins via BVARC

I will be at Kitty Hollow Park Thursday evening for a demonstration of remote
operations for our newer operators. This will be a very good opportunity for
our new techs to have their first HF experience. I will be using an Icom 706
Mkii operating on 20 meters with a 20 meter delta loop antenna. It is my
intent that this demo will remove some the HF fog for new operators.

Everyone is welcome to come by and join me from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm this
Thursday 23 at Kitty Hollow Park in Missouri City. The park entrance is about
. 3 miles to the east of the Sienna Parkway intersection.

If can't make it there, but like to check in, listen for the Kitty Hollow
net at 14.215 +- 10. This impromptu net has not been coordinated.

We will also monitor 146.940 if you have any questions.

I hope some of you will join us.

[BVARC] Airline pilot after ops maintenance review

Just in case you needed a laugh: Remember it takes a college degree to fly a
plane, but only a high school diploma to fix one; that's reassurance to those
of us who fly routinely.

After every flight, UPS pilotsfill out a form, called a 'gripe sheet,' which
tells mechanics about problems with the aircraft.

The mechanics correct the problems, document their repairs on the form, and
then pilots review the gripe sheets before the next flight.

Never let it be said that ground crews lack a sense of humor. Here are some
actual maintenance complaints submitted by UPS pilots (marked with a P) and the
solutions recorded (marked with an S) by maintenance engineers.

By the way, UPS is the only major airline that has never, ever, had an
accident

P: Left inside main tire almost needs replacement.

[BVARC] A Corpus Christi ham needs our assistance

A ham from Corpus is having to bring her father to Houston for 5 to 6 weeks for

having to stay at a hotel. As you can imagine, this puts some financial
stress on them. Her husband iremains in Corpus during this time. She will be
spending most all her time at the hospital with her Dad. She is on her early
50's. This is a good opportunity to show that hams care for one another. She
is planning on driving back home on the weekends during this period. If you

[BVARC] Ten Ten Winter contest @Kitty Hollow Park

2015-01-27 Thread Bob Hawkins via BVARC
Dear BVARC friends,

Please help me introduce our new Technicians to HF and contesting.

The Winter 10-10 contest is coming up on Feb 7 and Feb 8, 2015. Please
consider joining me at Kitty Hollow Park in Missouri City at 8:00AM to not
later than 5:00 PM to operate this contest. Kitty Hollow park offers a
rather unique terrain feature for Fort Bend County. Where I grew up in
Denton County, we called it a hill. The Kitty Hollow hill rises about
20 feet above the surrounding plain and lake. The setting is perfect for a
great day operating in the field.

We will reserve a pavilion with close by parking to enable power from your
car. The Lord of weather and HF propagation has decreed Feb 8 to be a
perfect day for making lots of ten meter contacts, indoctrinating new Techs
into the ways of HF and contesting and generally having lots of field
operations fun.

Please email me at bobhawki...@gmail.com to let know that you are coming as
I need a headcount to make sure there are enough radios and seasoned
operators available to serve as elmers. Also, please let me know if you
can bring a radio and or serve as an elmer.

[BVARC] Possible ISS contact during field day

2014-06-26 Thread Bob Hawkins via BVARC
I wonder if any of our satellite folks are aware of this. It could be an
interesting thing for field day.

Possible ISS Voice Contacts on Field Day
David Jordan, AA4KN, ARISS Public Relations

Current discussions between the ARISS team and NASA suggest the
possibility of voice contacts with the International Space Station
(ISS) during Saturday's ARRL Field Day activities this coming weekend.

In a June 23 email, Kenneth Ransom, the ISS Ham Radio payload
developer, stated I have received a response from astronaut (Reid)
Wiseman that he is willing to try and work some stations on Saturday.
Pass times begin very soon after the start of Field day. Wiseman
would operate under the call sign, NA1SS. Should Alex Gerst
participate, he would use the call sign, DP0ISS.

If voice operation does occur, It will likely take place from the
Columbus (COL) module using the standard Region 2 uplink frequency of
144.49 MHz and 145.800 MHz for downlink. It's expected that the packet
system will be operational on 145.825 MHz during periods when the crew
is not available.

It's not clear whether any of the Russian crew would participate from
the Russian module, but if so, they would be directed to use 437.550
MHz for any contacts using the call sign RS0ISS. The COL would also be
available to their crew using the VHF frequencies above, if Wiseman is
not operating.

Listed below are approximate pass times and a chart showing ISS passes
for the Field Day weekend. The pass times shown are not definite,
scheduled times with the crew. They may or may not be able to support
these times. And, updates to this tentative plan will be released as
they become available.

Saturday, June 28:
+ N. America (18:11-18:33 UTC)
+ Hawaii (19:36 - 19:47 UTC)
+ N. America (19:48-20:10 UTC)

Field Day weekend for North America can be viewed on-line at:

this has been discussed on the amsat-bb over the past week. there are no
bonus points and i believe that ARRL does not count it as a satellite
contact (i might be wrong). they have never considered the Shuttle, MIR or
the ISS as a satellite. AMSAT does count all contacts through the ISS. also
if the ISS is in voice mode and you work the astronaut, that is 1 point,
then if they turn on the digi, you can get more points off that. just keep
in mind that AMSAT field day only allows one contact per FM satellite per
 mode.

[BVARC] Problem with 718 USB mode- answer found

2014-06-23 Thread Bob Hawkins via BVARC
Thank you for all that responded to my 718 problem with transmit in the USB
mode. Here is what I learned.

It runs out that the default settings in the menu allow for turning each
mode on and off. The transmit mode of USB was turned off. I am not sure
why such a setting would even exist. I guess that some genius somewhere
found a need to turn off USB transmit mode. Maybe someone wanted to use the
radio in LSB transmit mode only.

Thanks for your help.

[BVARC] Problems with Icom 718 power out

2014-06-22 Thread Bob Hawkins via BVARC
I am having an issue with my new Icom 718. While the receiver is a big
improvement. In five different attempts, I have attempted to make a contact
without success. I thought it was just band conditions, until today. I
noticed no lights on my tuner in USB mode, 20 meters. No green light on the
LDG Z11 Pro II means there is no power getting to the radio. The RF power
level is set at 90%, the mic gain is at 70%. I have tried this with three
different microphones with the dame result, no power out on USB. I have
not tried this on LSB.

The tuning circuit on the radio works fine. The manual says that when
pushing the tuning button, the radio changes to AM mode and drops to 25%
power.

Anyone have any ideas?
