I really enjoyed reading this month’s Beacon. My favorites: the material
on WSPRand Nizar’s bio.

I am on the list for a Zach Tec transmitter but I bet that will take a
while…a guy can only solder so fast.

I enjoy all the great info from BVARC. Where in the world is ??reports
about places I think I’ll skip. Interesting notes on all kinds of things and
remarks by Nizar and others on what active hams do. Baloons bobbing along in
the stratosphere. Interesting and varied remarks on our nets.

I’m lucky to have even just a microscopic part of it all.

Re: [BVARC] Looking for HF Help

2020-10-16 Thread DAVID M GRAY JR via BVARC
Keep experiencing. I bet somebody in BVARC will come thru with help.

I have an off-center fed dipole about 135 ft. total length up about 12 ft. in
the back yard… I’m near N. Eldridge Pkw and Tanner. My signal into the BVARC
HF Wednesday net is minimal but I usually get checked in. About the same with
the Louisiana Traffic Net. My brother over in Ruston, LA… KB7QL….. often
reports that I have a strong signal up there… about 300 miles. He has a long
loop up about 15 ft.He often has a strong signal into Houston on 3910 kHz.

Keep trying and I bet things will begin to change for you.

I am 79 but I think the word is absurd. The perfect is the enemy of the good.
Our economy is not robust; if we crash it for the sake of a few thousands or
tens of thousands of non-lproductive citizens it could be ugly.

Re: [BVARC] Free Antenna Book On Line=== AS LONG AS THE TOPIC IS BOOKS...

2019-05-03 Thread DAVID M GRAY JR via BVARC
I’VE BEEN WONDERING HOW TO SHARE THIS.

The two things that impressed me after reading this bio of Art Collins:

Ham radio is very important… The early polar explorers were really
surprised when they found that their conduit from stormy seas into public
awareness was a kid in his atic in Cedar Rapids,IA.

Arthur Collins was very important. In WWII the boys in the planes had a
huge advantage because of their Collins radios. He ran out of steam, got old
and died. If he had lasted longer we might be using a Collins operating system
on our computers.

The book I was referencing is THE EASY WAY: HF ANTENNA SYSTEMS by J.M.

My project now is getting started on the digital modes. I am trying to
follow Ham Radio Deluxe’s advice… try reading the “fine” manual. I have an

Hi Nizar,

Thank you for your efforts to make BVARC a great radio club.

I plan to attend BVARC’S Field Day and bring an impressive load of ignorance
about the whole affair… I hope to leave knowing a lot more about radio than I
do now.

‘’’ Field Day is more than just putting up Antennas, rigs and making contacts.
It is a great time for teaching fellow members about ham radio and the multiple
modalities used for making QSOs.

Re: [BVARC] Important Information

2019-04-13 Thread DAVID M GRAY JR via BVARC
I’d be crazy about squirrels if I could be sure they would stay in the yard.
Several of our friends have had them get in the house….. the damage they can do
is amazing. I’m from Louisiana and I think our red squirrels are better
looking.
Generally I like critters; even snakes. And I like all the lizards we have…I
wish they were a foot long.
I had string way up in our trees last summer…but dishrag gourds and giant
beans were the climbers.

Re: [BVARC] Project Suggestion For Arduino

2019-04-13 Thread DAVID M GRAY JR via BVARC
I had the old Heath Cantenna dummy load. I had it filled with real transformer
oil… it later became a problem to get rid of it legally and the thing was kind
of messy to have in the house. Kept it in a dishpan.

I will probably stick with my MFJ dry dummy load and the radio’s output meter.

On the command-set rig my brother built for me back about 1960. We were in
central Louisiana. Tuneup was into a lightbulb. Antenna: a piece of frayed
lamp cord tied to the light fixture on the ceiling. I sent out CQ and my new
novice call: a few days later a QSL card came in from Connecticut with a
signal report!!Ham Radio!!

Thanks for the offer of help Nizar. I’ve been nibbling around the edges of CW
since mid-20th century. One of the great things about ham radio is that you
can lay it down and then pick it up any time. My current project is getting
the 20wpm certificate from W1AW. There is lots of self-help available from
ARRL and I like the Just Learn Morse Code program.

2019-02-08 Thread DAVID M GRAY JR via BVARC

I don’t have any of the equipment you mentioned but it is actually encouraging
to hear that it can fail and that not all problems are operaor problems. I
have a nice new radio but it and all the software…especially the constantly
evolving digital tricks are kind of a challenge to get talking to each other.
Ham Radio Deluxe says “Read the Fine manual amd know how your stuff works…..
well…. I have an iPad full of manuals and notes…. pretty much equal to a year
of college texts.”

I can remember griping that ham radio was going nowhere and that QST articles

Re: [BVARC] (no subject)

2017-09-19 Thread DAVID M GRAY JR via BVARC
I have found that the best way to get ethanol free gas is to bring it back from
Louisiana… I have a farm about 300 miles from here. I haul it in a trailer….
the idea of gas in the trunk does not appeal to me at all.

I tried mixing a gallon of water with 5 gallons of gas. Then separating the
gas and water… I thought the alcohol would go with the gas. Gave up on that.
The water filter I used didn’t work well. Gave up on the project… too hard.

But my small engines sure love the alcohol free gas. Especially my Yamaha
Grizzly 450.

Whoever is into the nuts and bolts of BVARC is super cool. A glitch or
two…just make it interesting. I enjoy hamming without doing much hamming.
The links to the DX expeditions and contests are great. The video of the guy
explaining the little Army radio is a wonderful example of an extreme form of
something.
I might go lifetime membership even if I am 100.

Re: [BVARC] Meeting Presentation Topic Suggestions

2016-04-05 Thread DAVID M GRAY JR via BVARC
Regarding the question about preparing for THE TEST... I'd like to mention my
own experience.

I had to spend a lot of time around the house at Christmas so I decided that
upgrading to Extra from Advanced would be a good thing to do. I bought a
course from HAMTESTONLINE.COM for about $35. The subscription runs for 3 years
but they say schedule a test in the next 4 to 6 weeks and stick to that.
Worked like a charm! They have all you need in a very well organized
program. I enjoyed learning stuff I'd never heard of and using what they used
to call Programmed Instruction. Like it or not, license requirements have
been dumbed down. Why not get the top ticket.
  David, K5HEC...new Extra.

Eddie… I’ve never met you but you don’t sound like a man to be taken lightly.
I DO HEREBY VOLUNTEER! For Friday. Possibly Saturday.

Qualifiers: I’m not worth a damn as a ham…I joined BVARC to change that. I’m
74 and don’t climb. I’d rather not touch any cash.

I am well suited to be a gofer or somebody’s helper.

Thanks for all the work you obviously do for our great club.

Bob,

I’m an older ham with the expertise of a very new ham. I just got the little
Yaesu from Amazon for about $160. It seems to be a very fine little radio,
especially for the price. Brutal construction…you could drive posts with
