[BVARC] Museum Ships Weekend is a GO

2024-05-23 Thread John Chauvin via BVARC

We just cleared the last hurdle, and all systems are go for MSWE 2024 beginning
Friday, 9 days from now. We got the last permission and as you know, the
bridge has been reopened since Saturday night.

You should receive an update from Mark Janzer, K5MGJ, with more particulars in
a couple days.

I personally am really looking forward to this.

So all you saw my commending Richard for his approach to Field Day.  I
accidentally sent it to the reflector.  So join me in looking forward to Field
Day and, as mentioned, Museum Ships Weekend assuming the bridge is reopened in
time.

Re: [BVARC] Field day question

2024-05-17 Thread John Chauvin via BVARC
Richard,I am responding only to you with a c.c. to Mike Hardwick.  I hate it
when people needlessly "reply to all."
Not only do I not have a problem with your having a class at Field Day but I
think it is a superb idea.  After all, FD is supposedly an emergency
preparedness event.  However, it must not interfere with the ongoing on-the-air
operations.  A large faction of the club like to make as many Qs as possible.
Yes, I will do CW, but I'm very casual about it.
I want to take this opportunity to congratulate you on your approach to
managing field day.  Yes, there are a lot of members who are on "auto-pilot"
and they know what they are doing.  It is imperative that you track all the
various tasks so none are overlooked and on-track.  This is a project that
needs to be actively managed, and I don't know if you have an MBA or you
dropped out of elementary school but regardless I like what I saw at the
meeting.  I trust that you are using some sort of Project Management Document.
I was Chairperson of the Hamfest for about 10 years, taking it from 20 tables
to 220 tables; I used an Excel spread sheet listing all the tasks on separate
lines, with columns (or other) to list the task leader, status, deadlines,
critical action items, comments & notes without micromanaging.  However, there
are 9 ways to skin a cat but the project management document must follow
normally accepted business management practices to be successful.  I
specifically like that you are letting the people who know what they are doing,
do so rather than coming in like "a bull in a china closet" and "improving"
across the board from the status quo.  It's best to pretty much, but not
completely, do it the way it has been done with some tweaking the first year
and then possibly making some significant changes (if you deem necessary) the
2nd year.  I also like that you want to return to the Firemen's Training Field
next year as it has a lot of advantages with a lot of room, sometimes with
separate buildings, a lot of "skyhooks" for antennas, etc.
Oh by the way, it might behoove you to go to Museum Ships Weekend which occurs
3 weeks before FD (May 31, June 1 and 2), assuming that the Pelican Island
Causeway bridge has been reopened by then.  We have long ago dubbed this "A
precursor to Field Day."  See a brief description in a block on the BVARC
homepage; more detailed info will be published via the reflector as well as the
BVARC web page within a week.  Also, you can check with Mark Janzer (Chairman)
or me for more info.

Keep up the good work and I look forward to FD-2024.

Re: [BVARC] Volunteers Needed - Greater Houston HamFest

2024-02-28 Thread John Chauvin via BVARC
BVARC does not want to be put into a position of judging how much volunteer
time is required to get free admission:  Is it 15 minutes; 2 hours; 8 hours; a
5 day work week; longer?  BVARC does not "pay" members to provide their time to
help BVARC.  It is a "volunteer" organization.  Furthermore, most of those who
help drive out there anyway to attend the Hamfest.  Additionally, do you expect
members to be paid to operate?
Go figure!

Volunteers Needed – Greater Houston HamFest

Needing volunteers for two critical areas.

1.   Table Set-up and Tear-down

A scheduling conflict has recently arisen with the group whoset up the tables
and the podium at the Greater Houston HamFest.  Three to four people are needed
to do thiswith it taking 2 to 3 hours for setup and about 2 hours to teardown.
The critical time is the setup.  You are not necessarily being asked to
helpwith both setup and teardown.

Setup tentatively will take place between about 10 and 1 onthis coming
Thursday, February 29 (the day before the actual Hamfest starts).  These 3
hours can be varied if tooinconvenient.  Someone will be there mostof the day
tending to this and other pre-hamfest work; In addition to the 2 – 3hours for
table setup, we need other volunteers for an hour or two at any timethroughout
that day (Thursday).  Teardownstarts immediately after the Hamfest ends at 3PM,
Saturday, March 2.  If you can help, please contact Mike Hardwick,N5VCX at
n5...@att.net or at 713-826-6917.

2.  Loading and Unloading

To help both vendors and support for the hamfest, volunteersare needed to help
load and unload vehicles. Some of the areas needed aresupport for Robert
Polinski with the PA system, HRO unloading their truck, HAMWEARSunloading their
vehicle and several other vendors. The time on this starts onThursday at 9 am
and continues off and on throughout the hamfest.

If you can spare 15 to 30 minutes Thursday, Friday or Saturdayin the morning or
afternoon, it will really be beneficial. If you can help, pleasecontact Mike
Hardwick, N5VCX at n5vcx@att.netor at 713-826-6917.

 Kori,
Your e-mail below was superb.  I like what you are doing.
I just put POTA on my calendar.  Maybe the barrage of e-mails of the past week
will do POTA some good.  I had one "active" member ask me "What is POTA?"  I
felt like answering "What planet have you been on" but I just let it slide.
I won't be making it to many of the Brews events as I'm not crazy about driving

[BVARC] The Hamfest Equipment Check Table signup sheet is now on-line.

2024-02-01 Thread John Chauvin via BVARC

Here is a Hamfest event that you can participate in that isfun, productive,
sedentary, done at your convenience and you will be doing agood thing.
This is a free service for Hamfest attendees who want to buysome used equipment
from a table vendor (or tailgater) but are reluctantbecause they are not sure
if it works. BVARC sets up tables with various test equipment for testing used
equipment.  Basic tests are performed to see if it isgenerally alive and
generally functional.  These are not comprehensivetests as we neither have the
time, equipment, the expertise nor the space totest to full factory
specifications.  Ourmotto is “We test to 3db above DOA.”  Wejust want to help
the buyer assure himself that the equipment is generally OK,but don’t guarantee
that all functions (some with 99 options on one drop down) arefully functional.

You don't need a PhD in Physics to participate at the table. Depending on your
skill level, there is a complete spectrum of tests that canbe performed and
that need doing which are above and below your skilllevels.  You will find your
slot: You might also learn something.  We also need staffers that don’t do
anytesting but generally assist and generally chat with the attendees.

Here is an interesting story:  5 or 6 years ago, I wascruising the tailgate
section of this Hamfest and saw a piece of equipment thatI was interested in.
We negotiated a price and I asked if I could take itto the Equipment Check
Table.  The guy asked, "Do they have anEquipment Check Table?"  I said "yes."
He immediatelyceased the conversation, secured his goods and drove away.  Was
there amessage there?

The time slots are in 1 hour blocks.  We ask that youtry to assist for a couple
of hours each day (not necessarily consecutive hours) that you are in
attendance but only 1 hour is OK.  Furthermore, during slow times, if (for
example) you want to double check something yousaw, just let others staffing
the table know that you are quickly running overto that vendor to evaluate and
consider it further.  Hopefully youpromptly return with a piece of equipment to
test.  Testing activity comesin fits and spurts.
Please sign up now at:

If you have further questions, please do not “reply to all” nor via the

I hope to see your call letters on the signup sheet soon.

[BVARC] Prompt action has been requested on a pending ARRL motion regarding the mailed copies of QST.

2024-01-14 Thread John Chauvin via BVARC

To: BVARC Reflector Recipients who are ARRL members,
Note: There are 3 ARRL motions being considered, one of which is the "Gag
Order."  This e-mail today only addresses the one regarding QST.
If you are a member of ARRL and in the West Gulf Division, you received John
Stratton’s(ARRL West Gulf Division Director) e-mail on December 31. regarding
the motion to rescind the prior actions re QST.  ARRL no longer sends QST as
part of it’s basic non-lifetime paid-upmembers even though the member might
have up to 3 years remaining on their term.  This is entitled “Motion To Honor
Member’sContracts.” See
https://westgulfdivision.org/westgulfdivision-org/motion/ARRLMotionToHonorMembershipContracts.pdf.
We want this to pass!  This will be voted on at the upcoming that ARRL Board
of Director’s meeting this coming weekend (Jan 19 and 20).  Their actions not
honoring their agreementprobably affects more than 2/3 of the 160,000 members.
Example: If you area non-lifetime member and accepted ARRL’s unsolicited offer
to renew your membershiplast year, say for 3 years, that offer included mailed
QST for that 3-year term.  With 2 years left on that 3-year term,ARRL elected
to not continue to send QST to you for the remaining 2 years on your current
membership.

Therefore, it is requested that you send an e-mail tothe President of ARRL and
other directors as you see fit, asking for the BOD topass the current motion to
restore the subscription of mailed QST for theduration of the current paid-up
non-lifetime memberships.  To have your say, it must bee-mailed within a day or
two to be received and processed prior to theBOD meeting commencing this
Friday.   Quotingfrom the above referenced e-mail, “If you believe the Motion
has merit and itshould pass, it would be important for you to share your
support for the Motionwith the ARRL President, Rick Roderick, and the other
Directors.  All of their email addresses can be found onPage 15 of QST or at
http://www.arrl.org/divisions.  If you choose toshare your views, please be
respectful — we choose to disagree, but need not bedisrespectful.”

I have already sent mine in.

[BVARC] To asspiring casual and intermediate CW operators -give the laid-back NAQP a try this weekend

2024-01-12 Thread John Chauvin via BVARC
To any one even slightly interested in operating CW:
Are you reluctant to participate in a "contest?"  Indeed some are intimidating,
however the NAQP this weekend is user friendly and has many features that allow
the beginner and intermediate operators to achieve a respectable amount of
contacts and most importantly, have fun.  The North American QSO Party takes
place tomorrow (Saturday) from noon CST to midnight.  It only occurs twice a
year for each mode - CW, SSB and RTTY.Examples of simplified, friendly features
include:
   - The power is limited to 100 Watts.  So those who normally use 1500 watts,
can't do so, and thus have no advantage here.
   - The "big guns" may have "antenna farms" which lets them compete among one
another, but the vast majority of participants simply have just have a dipole,
and end-fed antenna, a vertical or similar.  I have a vertical.  We know that
we won't win, but who cares.  You and I are in it to learn and to have fun.
It's also a great way to build up your code speed.
   - As it is the NORTH AMERICAN QSO PARTY, funny thing, but probably 98% of
the participants are from North America and therefore more easily reachable.
   - The "multipliers" (see rules at https://www.ncjweb.com/NAQP-Rules.pdf )
are the US States, Canadian Provinces and other North American DXCC entities
(but not their states).  So it is advantageous for any DX or domestic station,
to make Qs with only the multipliers - that is you!
   - Accordingly, it is a chance to add a few DXCC entities to your log.
   - Operators are limited to operate 10 of the 12 hours.  Rest assured, I will
not be operating even 10 hours but I will make a bunch of QSOs.
   - As this e-mail is aimed at beginners and casual contesters like myself,
even just operating for 3 or 4 hours will result in a very satisfactory number
of QSOs.
   - As with most contests, there is a standard exchange - For the NAQP, your
name and state/province/foreign country are all that is required.
   - Many use either a short alias or shortened names - Bartholomew, even if he
likes to be addressed that way, will undoubtedly use "Bart."

   - Because it is a standard exchange, you know the nature of what is coming
at you.  It's not like "chewing the fat" (chatting) with someone where wording
is "open season."  Furthermore, your exchange as sent is always the same;
therefore some use the keyer mode either built in to their transceiver or an
external memory keyer.  Regardless, if you don't want to "deal with" a keyer,
you will "automatically" send your exchange manually after 5 or 6 Qs.
   - If you are generally unfamiliar or unexperienced in this regard, I suggest
that you participate by doing "search and pounce."  That is you search around
for someone sending CQ NAQP (there will be gillions) and you pounce by sending
your reply with your call.  The other option, as you get more experience, is to
"run," that is you send "CQ NAQP" and you then listen for them to come back to
you.
So, do give it a whirl.  You won't regret it!

And by the way, do submit your log to the contest people (see rules).  No, you
won't win any awards, but it is the courteous thing to do and shows support.
The organizers use all logs to keep the Big Guns honest.
FYI - it is always best to use a computer with either free or very inexpensive
logging software, but isn't necessary.  I use N3FJP.  See the rules regarding
paper logs.
HAVE FUN!

[BVARC] Added info: Re: Vice President's Update for May 2023

2023-05-01 Thread John Chauvin via BVARC
 To all,
Thank you Kori for a great rundown of BVARC activities in May.  Hopefully many
members take advantage of some of these opportunities to get out, operate,
socialize and generally participate as they may.
Since Kori mentions a June event, Field Day, I wish to also point out another
official BVARC June operating event - the Museum Ships Weekend (MSWE - June 2,
7PM CDT to mid-day Sunday, June 4).  This is often viewed as a "prelude to
Field Day."  BVARC has been participating in this event since 2008.  Of course,
there will be BVARC food, especially the Saturday evening meal.
As of a week ago, there were 77 ships around the world officially listed as
participating, so this should grow to about 100 by the time the event kicks
off.  Like FD, POTA and WFD, it is an opportunity to get out of your shack and
enjoy a different venue.  This one is of significant historical significance in
that we will operate on-board 2 WW-II Naval vessels in Galveston: The Submarine
USN Cavalla, Commissioned on "Leap Day" 1944, which sank the Japanese aircraft
carrier Shokahu on her Maiden Patrol  and the Destroyer Escort USS Stewart that
supported many supply convoys across the Atlantic Ocean and safely escorted FDR
part of the way in 1943 to attend a conference in Casablanca and Tehran.
The MSWE operations are around-the-clock and we are allowed to bunk in the
Stewart.  See the May BEACON for more details and attend the May 11 General
Membership Meeting for a presentation of MSWE, BVARC's history in participation
and details of this year's event.

[BVARC] Dim bulb current limiting power supply

2023-03-02 Thread John Chauvin via BVARC
Robert,I have always used a Variac for AC powered equipment which I have.  The
Dim Bulb Current Limiting Power Supply is an interesting concept but would not
a DC Power Supply with current limiting work?  The Dim Bulb . . . . is only $15
on Amazon, but I can't get it until tomorrow evening.  Unfortunately, I am
staying in a motel on TX36 Friday night, so I won't have it in time even for
Saturday.  DO YOU HAVE ONE THAT YOU CAN LEND TO THE CAUSE?
I presume that you are setting up today.  I'll be there for 3 or 4 hours
beginning around 9:30 or 10 this morning.  Then home around 1 or 2 for the
final pack up and load out.

fire emitting from them and dangerous fumes. If you plug it into a dim bulb

In order to provide attendees the opportunity to see if the used equipment that
they are about to purchase is working, BVARC provides a service at the
Equipment Check Table to do basic tests on the equipment.  This is not a
verification that the equipment fully performs properly, but should give the
buyer a better feeling for the status of what he is purchasing.  We say "We
test it to 3db above DOA" - Hi, Hi.

We won't make Go-NoGo decisions for the buyer, but this testing often results
in his feeling better or tells him that maybe he should pass.  As a staff
member of the Check Team, you do not need to have 25 years experience working
in an electronics test lab.  A little knowledge of basic electronics would
help.  For example, if we are testing a transceiver, we might measure the
output level, via an HF power meter into a dummy load on a few bands.  We would
check the receiver to see if it hears anything.  We would test this for CW and
apparent SSB operation.  Distortion, stability, harmonic content, sensitivity,
etc. are far beyond what we will do.

To participate for an hour or two, go to the following link to sign up for the

[BVARC] A good, easy, relaxing way to help for 1 or 2 hours at the Hamfest and do "a good thing."

2023-02-25 Thread John Chauvin via BVARC
Do you know about the Equipment Check Table?  BVARC has a staffed table with
basic test equipment where we perform basic tests on used equipment that
attendees are thinking of buying.  The prospective purchaser can ask the seller
if they can bring it to the check table to verify that at least it isn't DOA
(and a little more than that- hi, hi).  You don't need a PhD in Physics to
perform these tests.  For example, for a power supply, we would test it under
load, to measure the V and A out.  We won't get into filtering, regulation,
etc.  While staffing the Check Table, it is predominantly a sit down task, with
some lull times.  Sometimes members just drop by for 15-20 minutes, to rest and
assist with checking.  We do need a few more members to sign up for specific
1-hour time slots to assure that it will be staffed during the entire hamfest.

[BVARC] A fun opportunity to help at the Greater Houston Hamfest

2023-02-22 Thread John Chauvin via BVARC
Hello BVARCers and other hams,
Here is an enjoyable activity you can take part in to help make the Greater
Houston Hamfest a fantastic success.  The Equipment Check Table needs staffing
of hams to casually test equipment that potential buyers at the flea market are
considering.  You don't need to be a radio engineer or other; we are testing
very general features, just about 3db above "Is it DOA?"  We will test to major
parameters (Ex. a Power Supply - Voltage and Current out under various loads).
We won't be testing to full factory specs but hopefully giving them some "warm
fuzzies in the tummy" about what they are considering buying.  You won't make
any decisions; that's up to them.  We will perform these tests while they watch
and decide for themselves.  You can sit down for most of the time and you get
to meet a lot of people.  We are located by the door leading to the lectures,
VE testing, Innovative Spark, Emergency Vehicles, Balloon Launches, etc., so we
will have plenty traffic, with peak and slack times.
So go to the following URL and sign up for an hour or so to have an enjoyable
experience and to do a good thing.

Re: [BVARC] No General Membership Meeting: Yes, Hamfest Zoom meeting tonight

2023-01-12 Thread John Chauvin via BVARC
 John,
Thank you for the response.
Regarding Zoom, yes, there are many people that don't do Zoom.  That's the
beauty of amateur radio that there are many facits of the hobby and many ways
of achieving the same objective.  Be advised that Zoom has apparently evolved
in some instances to be a form Social Media but primarily remains simply an
electronic way of having meetings for people that can't realistically meet at
the same location and time.  Fortune 500 companies use it literally thousands
of times a day.  Many of those companies ban traditionally Social Media sites
such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. on their networks.
Regarding using Zoom or the meetings as an only channel of recruitment of
volunteers, I made it clear that tonight's Zoom meeting is not a recruiting
session.
Volunteers are not "denied the opportunity" to participate in that members and
others are recruited mostly one-on-one, as I had done with you and others to
assist at the Equipment Check Table.  Other opportunities and ways are in
groups, discussions at personal encounters, at events, nets, general repeater
chit-chat and of course for those that wish to initiate action, there is a lot
at the Hamfest Website itself which has a special page dedicated to Volunteers.
Even that is not enough however, so any other suggestions are always welcome.
I look forward to seeing you again at a Wednesday Lunch Bunch, Saturday Morning
Breakfast, hopefully the banquet, at the February General Membership Meeting
and of course at the Hamfest.

[BVARC] Have you thought about contests but were unsure? The NAQP this weekend is a fun starter!

2022-08-18 Thread John Chauvin via BVARC
If so, the North American QSO Party this weekend is perfect for you.
1 - For most participants, it is a non-competitive event, including myself, who
has been doing contests for 20 years.2 - All participants are limited to 100
watts, so if not having had an amp has been a concern, then "here you go."  You
are working on an even keel with the "heavyweights."  Of course, a few might
have stacked triple beams on a 100' tower, and you might have a dipole strung
on your back fence, but the mega-antennas are far-and-few- in-between.  3 - It
is SSB only (this weekend).  You can do this!  "Nuff said" about that.4 - It is
only 12 hours long (from 1PM Saturday (CDT) to 1AM Sunday.  However you are
typically limited to 10 hours operating time.5 - Though it is the "NORTH
AMERICAN" QSO Party, all DX stations can also participate.  Every 1 or 2 times
I participate, I usually get a contact or two from South America or Europe.6 -
You will definitely make Qs with many states.   Are you interested in the ARRL
WAS (Worked All States) certificate.  For the NAQP CW event 2 weeks ago, I
worked 43 states.7 - There's more, but you should get the drift.
If you wish to use a logging program, there are many around.  N1MM is usually
seen as the "best" contesting software and is the world's most popular and is
free.  However it is intimidating to load, set up, and to learn to use.  I
recommend, and still primarily use, N3FJP software.  It costs $8.99 for a
lifetime license/registration and revisions to the "NAQP Module."  If you like
it, and want to operate more contests, you can purchase other modules but
preferably you can buy a lifetime license for all the contest modules (I
believe it is 200+) for $60 total, but he will give you full credit for any
modules previously purchased.  As it is a family operation, they do check it
several times a day, especially before a popular contest, but I suggest you not
wait until 2 hours before the event starts.
ALSO, you can download a full featured working version of the NAQP module (or
any of the modules) for free to try but are limited to 30 contacts.  N3FJP is a
slam dunk and you will be using it after maybe 10 minutes.

This event occurs 2 times per year (for each of 3 modes - CW, SSB and RTTY) in
January/February and July/August).  FT-8 contests are rare but I understand
that a few exist.
Let me know if you tried it.  Hopefully, I will make a Q with you.

OK, I never heard from you about "a chat" but I guess we have more time now.
FYI, Priss is having a hip replacement on June 1.  So I can probably go there
Friday, Saturday and/or Sunday for a while, but regretfully I'm sure I won't be
able to pull a 48 hour shift.  This is a personal let down for me as MSWE is
possibly my favorite ham event of the year.
I see that MSWE is up to 62 ships and climbing.  Fantastic!
Looks like Mike Monsour isn't manning a TX City Memorial as Tidelands has it.
Has he expressed interest in being active with BVARC?
Call anytime if you wish.  Otherwise, I'll look for your rescheduled meeting

2020-07-25 Thread John Chauvin via BVARC
So is Marty still at it or did you just send this as a holdover from your
"helping" him months back?  He didn't respond to my fair offer of a few months
ago.  I didn't pursue it further based your comment about he wants the seller
to do everything for him and will be pestered forever.
I still have 2 and will sell both, but am in no rush as I will need to replace
them but we are still recovering from paying taxes, insurance, yardwork,
utilities, etc. on Darnell (~$2500/month) for 10 months while empty. IZO

[BVARC] Off topic subject - Bright comet visible - first bright one since Hale-Bopp in 1992-1993

2020-07-18 Thread John Chauvin via BVARC
I'm sure that many of you know this, but for those that don't, Comet Neowise is
now visible in the evening sky.  This is the brightest comet since Hale-Bopp in
1996-1997.  See the attached article for particulars.
The short version is you should find a relatively dark sky with good horizon,
say near Fulshear or NW of Spring or similar, and look NW about 15 degrees
above the horizon, just below the bowl of the Big Dipper around 80 minutes
after sunset.  It is possible to see in naked-eye under very favorable CDX, but
it is recommended that you bring binoculars -  preferably 10x50 but anything
will help.
It is currently at it's relative peak visibility, but will start tapering in
several days.  Though it will be closest to the Earth on July 21, it is also
receding from the sun, so for visibility, these 2 factors play against
one-another.  Cloud conditions tonight at that time are forecast to be 30%
coverage, then gradually increasing the next couple evenings, so "tonight's the
night" though tomorrow is also OK, but don't count on it.  Be patient and you
might have to wait for some of those 30% clouds to move.

[BVARC] K5IZO IARU HF 2020

2020-07-12 Thread John Chauvin via BVARC
I believe that this is the first time that I worked IARU in earnest, though I
might have tested the waters in the past.  I had a lot of fun.
I operated from my lake house.  I probably had "butt-in-chair" about 12 hours
with maybe 60 minutes +/- on, 30 minutes +/- off, etc.Generally on-and-off for
the 24 hours except from about 9PM-1AM when I caught some ZZZs.  I resumed then
but finally had to crash at about 5:30 even though there was still plenty to
work.
I still haven't whipped my RF feedback problem so I was "limited" to about 400
W.I operated about 50-50 S vs Running.Those TDXS and/or BVARCers that I
worked and recognized were Big Al (XZ), Nizar (NM) and David M (GN).  I'm sure
that there were several others that I worked.

[BVARC] Inconsistent entries of forms on the ARRL Field Day entry

2020-07-03 Thread John Chauvin via BVARC
THERE IS AN INCONSISTENCY IN THE FORMS AS SUBMITTED BY THOSE ATTRIBUTING TO

At this time, there are 2 entries submitted to BRAZO VALLEY AMATEUR RADIO CLUB
but12 entries submitted to BRAZOS VALLEY AMATEUR RADIO CLUB.
PLEASE BE SURE TO SELECT BRAZOS VALLEY AMATEUR RADIO CLUB!!! THAT IS THE ONE
WITH AN "S" IN BRAZOS.
The two will not combine.  Therefore, unless there is a way to correct the 2
entries, Brazos Valley Amateur Radio Club will lose credit for the 2 sent to
the one without the S in BRAZOS.

Please note, the form probably enters any new affiliation names in the dropdown

[BVARC] Please be sure to claim your club for your Field Day score

2020-06-26 Thread John Chauvin via BVARC
Tomorrow (Saturday) at 1PM, many of us will start operating field day.  Most of
us will probably be operating from their home station as Class 1D or 1E.
Also, many BVARCers belong to several clubs, so those will have to decide which
club to attribute their score to.
MOST IMPORTANTLY, do submit your score to ARRL.  BVARC has had a strong
presence in the past and though this year is an unusual situation, it would be
good if you submit your score regardless of if it is 10 or 1000Qs.
If you choose BVARC, it is important that you attribute it precisely as shown
below or it will be attributed to what you say, which won't help our club at
all.  We won't "win" any prizes or other, even with 100% participation, but we
would like to show a strong presence as in the past again, please be sure to
submit yours.  Attribute it EXACTLY AS FOLLOWS:  BRAZOS VALLEY AMATEUR RADIO
CLUB
DO NOT attribute it to BVARC, BRAZOS VALLEY ARC or any other than as shown as
above.
Good luck.
I'll be operating 1D from my lake cabin in East Texas and hope to work you.
Obviously I won't work the full 24 hours but will work short spurts during the
day tomorrow, tomorrow night at various times, and Sunday morning.

[BVARC] There appears to be some confusion re !D and 1E for Field Day

2020-06-21 Thread John Chauvin via BVARC
The NORMAL rules for FD state that any station operating D class (1D, 2D, etc)
cannot claim contacts made another D class station.HOWEVER, that rule is waived
for 2020.  So, this year only, any class can count contacts made with any
class, including D class.
There is also confusion regarding the 100 bonus points per station operating
all emergency power.  THE NEW 2020 WAIVER DOES NOT CHANGE THIS RULE.  Therefore
if you want to claim the 100 bonus points, ALL your contacts must be made while
under emergency power.  Some people apparently think that only 1 QSO need be
made with emergency power to get the 100 bonus points.  THIS IS NOT TRUE!  For
example, if you make a total of 200 QSOs of which 199 are under emergency power
and you make 1 QSO using commercial power, than you cannot claim to be an E
class station.
Good luck with Field Day.

[BVARC] Road construction going out to the Greater Houston Hamfest

2019-03-22 Thread John Chauvin via BVARC
When you go to the Greater Houston Hamfest, be aware that the TX Hwy 36 exit
off of US59/I69 IS NOT MARKED as such!  If you miss it, you have to go about 4
or 5 miles before you can pull a U-Turn.So . . . After you cross the Brazos
River, you go about 4 miles, passing 3 exits, and you will then pass the exit
to 762, then you will pass Reading Road and then another 1 or 2 miles you will
pass FM 2218  All of these are only marked with small temporary signs.
Immediately after you pass the 2218 exit, you will go over an overpass.  When
you come down, the exit is up ahead maybe 1/4 mile.  It is only marked with a
small sign that says EXIT.  There is no highway number and there are no signs
ahead of that telling you that the TX36 exit coming up.  The exit is one of
those where they moved about 2 or 3 of the concrete barriers and threw some
asphalt down to the feeder road.  There is no exit lane, nor any running lanes.
Hwy 36 will then be up about another mile.  Turn left onto 36 and go what is
possibly 1/2 mile to a flashing light.  Turn right into the entrance to the
Fairgrounds.
We will see you there.

Just a short reminder to everyone participating in the 20 wpm CWT contests
tomorrow. The three contests start at 8 am, 2 pm and 10 pm CST. They last one
hour each. You can work as much or as little as you want. The exchange is Name
and CWOPS number, or, Name and state. The CWOPS teachers and students will be
sending Name and CWA.

If you are a newbie to CW or you are not very fast, this contest is perfect for
you to make some contacts. If anyone is going too fast, send a QRS or ?. That
will let them know to slow down. Have fun.

Re: [BVARC] Boy Scout Troop in need of Ham help

2017-10-25 Thread John Chauvin via BVARC
I too agree that that is an incredible gift.I also agree to not simply "flip
the switch" for the same reasons cited and more as cited below.
I will be out of town this weekend, so I can't help with your plans this time.
You indicate that no one of the licensed hams has ever operated HF.  I see that
you hold a Technician class license.  Do any hold a general class license?  As
a technician, you can operate 10M and 6M on SSB,  Be advised that because of
the current solar cycle timing, you will probably hear very little on 10M or
6M.  Your antenna is a highly compromised antenna, intended for apartment
dwellers and though it will get you on the air, it is a highly inefficient
antenna and will greatly reduce the power radiated as well as the strength of
the received signal.  Do you have an "antenna analyzer" so you can more
efficiently pick the taps for the bands on the antenna coil
I strongly suggest that if all of your adults have no HF experience, you not
proceed until you get an experienced ham to help, with the right test equipment
and a more appropriate antenna.  Otherwise, it will probably be an negative
frustratiting experience and might be counter productive.
I look forward to hearing how this turns out.
Tnx es GL  (thanks and good luck),

of an impedance mismatch to protect finals, e.g.) - but why take the chance
with a VERY expensive rig?
I'm not available this Sunday, but I'd be happy to help when I have time.  Many

Cherish the wonderful gift your troop has been given, take your collective

2017-07-27 Thread John Chauvin via BVARC
Keith, et al,
Indeed, this bill is a disaster and will certainly lead to the demise of
amateur radio.Do indeed see the article on Page 3 of the October BVARC
Newsletter (on the BVARC website).
The ARRL started what was to be a good thing, but then capitulated to the HOAs
on EVERY point and makes it impossible to get approval while exposing ourselves
to the fact that we have unapproved antennas up, which will then makes anyone
with such an antenna guilty of federal crime, when this bill inevitably becomes
a federal law.
The ARRL doesn't have the balls to "man up" and admit that they screwed up.
On to fly fishing.

I have an antique Royal made in 1954. However, I do not want to sell it. If he
you would like to borrow it and return it, that would be fine. I also have an

[BVARC] Forming BVARC teams for NAQP CW

2017-07-22 Thread John Chauvin via BVARC
If any of you want to join me to form a BVARC team for the NAQP CW contest
please let me know. These are 12 hour max events, so it requires some
commitment, but doesn't eat the whole weekend. We'll do the same for the SSB
contest, but will address that after the CW event.
NAQP CW is 2 weeks away, from 1300 CDT (1800 UTC) August 5, to 0100 CDT (0600
UTC) August 6.
NAQP SSB is the same hours, 2 weeks later, Aug 19-20.
Teams can be from 2 to 5 people.  If more step up, we can form more teams.
We won't win (we won't even "place" or "show"), but it will be fun.  Here's a
chance to make a zillion Qs very quickly.  Your individual scores are also
entered.
BVARC's usual heavyweights will be on a TDXS team so BVARC will not be very
competitive, therefore, DON'T BE TIMID!  Just Do It - - and enjoy!
Let me know before mid-week this coming week.

[BVARC] My most memorable Field Day - in a swamp in South Louisiana in the 50s.

2017-05-07 Thread John Chauvin via BVARC

Ahhh,
Field Day is possibly my favorite amateur radio activity, and that is largely
attributable to the first few Field Days that I participated in.
OK, so  picture the scene: K(N)5IZO was age 13-16, outside of New Orleans,
1957-1960.  FD was located in a park and set up in an open-air Quonset hut with
only the 1/2 cylinder hut, with no ends and no windows.  Local residents had
heard of the invention called "air conditioning" but that was reserved for the
department stores downtown.  The park was carved out of a swamp where there was
little between us and the Gulf of Mexico except 20 miles of pre-EPA "nature."
Mosquitoes? N!  Do you really think there were mosquitoes?  This was more
than 20 years before DEET became readily available and we used "6-12" mosquito
repellent.  That was a slimy, oily concoction, that, simply put, didn't work.
We also had "Pic" burning coils, but that also simply didn't work.  Out the
back end of the Quonset hut, maybe about 100' away, was a canal.  Was the canal
cordoned off, embankment landscaped, barricaded, wharfed, boardwalked, lighted
or otherwise marked?  Who are you kidding?  Were there alligators and water
moccasins in the canal and basking about on "land"? Of course not - hi, hi.
Did you dare step out of the back of the Quonset hut at night?  You figure it
out.  Of course, the dates of Field Day are set by Yankees in Newington, so it
occurs at the end of June.  This is a most delightful time to be in a swamp in
the coastal marshes of Louisiana; a true Chamber Of Commerce delight.
Through it all however, we had a GREAT time.  I have no idea how we "fared" in
scoring, but no one cared!  We thoroughly enjoyed the planning, setting up, 24
hour operations, demobilization, the camaraderie, improvising the equipment,
the activities and the setting.Ahhh, those were "The Good Ole Days."

May I suggest that you, Jeff and Glenn put the time slot booking status on

interested can pick a time?  Maybe Eddie can find a spot to put it on the BVARC

Anyway, please put me down for1.  a 2 hour CW slot Saturday afternoon - -

this year. New antennas with great rigs and a resolve for being a real
contender. Whats usually one of the best field day teams on the air could
easily be looking at  putting up a solid score that will get noticed by all.
Filed day is a great event and a few good Hams could make all the difference.
Last year our setup was amazing and the team was outstanding.  I got to operate
on rigs that I can only drool over in the magazines .I wouldn't want to be
someone that missed out of being part of a winning team. The N1MM loggers
should be rolling in the contacts again this year and for me there is nothing
like being in the middle of all the action.  I love being a HAM and all the
excitement of filed day. Once the antennas are high and we are all watching the
clock for that magic hour for GO time. Even working through the night with the
coffee flowing and keeping an eye of the scores just piling up.  As Hams we
should all love getting out of our shack and hanging out with the club on our
special day. I am hoping over the next few weeks we can get some commitments to
come and join in on all the fun.  New Hams, experienced Hams, even non hams
should take some time to come out and join in the fun. My daughter had a blast
running the GOTA station last year.  We will have CW, SSB, and digital stations
all working. I am hoping we have some people chasing the Satellites.  If you
have never seen someone chases a contact on bird flying through space, then
that alone would bring me out.  Over the next few weeks we will be offering up
some time slots. Some of the great slots will go fast and they will be first
come first serve. I like the Grey line slots myself the bands seems to get
interesting. I hope to see everyone come enjoy catching some great contacts,
after all it's only once a year.  Have

Au contraire.
It is not that my, and hopefully anyone else's, whole day is consumed with the
reflector.  Rather it is that many of us have a busy schedule and have to sort
through this BS to get to our only desire for the reflector - amateur radio.
One exception, because of the nature of many amateur radio operators, an
occasional "off topic" is required as a one-time question or similar, but not
leading to a long e-mail trail.  I would hope that those that respond to these
occasional requests do so directly and not respond to the entire reflector.
IMHO (to quote a internationally acclaimed orator and noble statesman).

[BVARC] Need for old transceiver

2017-03-29 Thread John Chauvin via BVARC
Does anyone have an old solid state transceiver that I can borrow for a few
days or buy from you?  Something along the lines of a TS-120 or 130 or similar
of any make would be ideal.
Please reply directly to me at k5...@yahoo.com and not via the reflector.
