Friend, Karen, on Pleasant Grove Lane reports a Scarlet Tanager this morning.

East Hill Rec Way was full of House Wrens and Catbirds singing away.  We had  
our first Rose Breasted Grosbeak, Brown Thrasher and several White Crowned 
Sparrows this morning, just waiting for a nearby Oriole to come to our yard!

THROATED SPARROWS  have taken their place eating on the ground along with one

[cayugabirds-l] Goldfinch mishap

Yesterday as I was out walking, a couple pointed out to me, that there was a 
Gold Finch flapping about in a burdock plant!  I went up to the plant and saw 
that the bird’s wing was clearly stuck and attached to the burdock, so I 
gathered the bird in my hand and gently pulled its' stuck wing feathers away.  
I half expected it to fly away—but instead it sort of fluttered to the 
ground—and continued to rest.  There wasn’t an appropriate nearby tree to set 
it upon, so we just left the bird on the ground—but underneath some large 
leafed weed—well concealed.  I went to same spot on my walk today, and there 
was no sign of the bird.  I like to think that it escaped predators.  However, 
I had several burdock plants attached to my arm!  I’ve heard of hummingbirds 
getting stuck in spider webs—but this was my first experience of a bird being 
caught on a burdock plant.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Cedar waxwings fly catching?

Just the other day I saw about a dozen Cedar Waxwings fly catching over the 
stream, as viewed from East Hill Rec Way, on the bridge which is near the 
intersection of 366/Dryden Rd.  I believe this is something they do frequently, 
as it is a good spot to find Waxwings.

[cayugabirds-l] Dove behavior

This morning I noticed a Mourning Dove with an appropriate size small branch, 
on our platform feeder—with no other birds present.  It walked around the 
feeder, and then to the other side several times.  At first I thought maybe the 
branch was stuck in its beak, so took a look with my bins, and could see the 
bird was holding onto the branch!  It was there for a few minutes before flying 
to another nearby tube feeder, with the branch still in its mouth—having a 
little difficulty maintaining its balance on the perch, with the branch in its 
mouth!  I looked away from window a bit, and when I looked back the dove was 
still on tube feeder, but had dropped the branch.  However, a few minutes 
later, the Dove had his special branch and was back on the tube feeder!!  I 
could only assume he was trying to attract a mate with a beautiful branch—but 
no one was at the feeder(s) to see it!!

[cayugabirds-l] Canada Goose nest

Not particularly exciting, but interesting to me from the aspect of nature.  
Yesterday, after walking around Cornell’s Beebe Lake, I followed the smaller 
path up the stream and while looking from the fenced protective view point, 
discovered across the way, a Canada Goose sitting on a very sharp precipice 
about 20 ft above the water!  It is in a cutaway shale area.  My friend had 
pointed this out to me last year, when she was fortunate enough to see the 
goslings drop from the high ledge down into the water.  Probably it is the same 
goose, and we will anxiously watch to see if we can be fortunate enough again 
to see fledglings.  Yesterday, we were able to see at least 3 eggs that mama 
goose was sitting on.  (I never knew that geese would nest in such an area, 
rather than on the ground.)

I was just coming through Varna when I had to pull over and stop the car, 
because there were about 25-30 TV’s soaring overhead, just above the rooftops.  
There were enough to be looking for a ‘road-kill’, but I imagine they were 
either settling down for night or trying to get an updraft.

[cayugabirds-l] Downy WP behavior

Recently we have been seeing something we’ve never had occur at our feeders 
before.  A Downy Woodpecker has become a regular visitor to our hummingbird 
feeders!  Our H-bird feeders are of the ‘flat’ square variety attaching to 
window, and a round variety—but flat surface—hanging from a porch.  Anyway, we 
were surprised to see a woodpecker (tending to usually be a female) actively 
feeding from the feeder.  At first I thought the Downy might be getting 
insects, but then I could see the liquid moving—and realized it was actually 
sipping the nectar!!  We do have a ‘dripping’ bird bath water supply, but I 
guess it is just not enough for the Downy.  Has anyone else been having this 
occur at their h-bird feeders during this dry summer?

[cayugabirds-l] Chipping/Fox Sparrow

Larry called me to our bay window to quickly look at a CHIPPING SPARROW.  As I 
was grabbing my bins to look--but in the opposite direction--I spotted a FOX 
SPARROW!!  In the meantime the rest of the birds were flushed, and I have been 
waiting for the chipper to come back, so I could see it for myself and get a 
more accurate ID.  (Larry is fairly confident that it was a Chipper.)  In 
meantime, Fox sparrow remains.

On my walk this morning on EIRW it seems that a new flock of migrants has moved 
in.  When I returned home Larry informed me of seeing a new yard bird--the same 
I had spotted on my walk--SONG SPARROWS.  (I saw 6 on the bike path--but only 1 
showed up in our yard.)  The newly arrived ROBINS were also on bike path--all 
fat and plump.  But quietly sitting in the shrubs watching the robins was a 
NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD.

[cayugabirds-l] Cardinal Bonanza!

For the past several days we have been treated to LOTS of Cardinals--all at one 
time, at our feeders.  By 'lots' I mean, we reached a high number of 22 today!! 
 They all seem to come at once at dusk.  While we try to count them quickly, 
they flit to the bushes and then we have to re-start our count.  There is 
approximately an even number of males and females, so quite a beautiful sight!  
It is probably helpful that Larry throws a lot of white millet seed on the 
ground for them.  We both have also heard, separately, Cardinals singing the 
past couple of days.  Perhaps it is because of the high number of them--or else 
the longer day length.

[cayugabirds-l] turkeys

We were just coming up Giles St, and at the intersection with State/MLK (2 
houses south) was a family of turkeys!  Since they were gathered underneath a 
tree, I at first thought they were statues, so I had Larry back up.  Sure 
enough 2 adults and 7 young: (is that considered a 'flock'?), but they were 
headed down the hill and most likely from whence they came--to Van Nattis Dam 
area.  I've never seen turkeys in city limit before!

[cayugabirds-l] Chimney Swifts

I thought I would share this email from Bryant Park List Serve, that even 
non-birders are enjoying the Chimney Swifts:

Neighbors,

It appears that the flock of Chimney Swifts has returned to the Belle Sherman 
school chimney. They put on quite a show...I'd recommend it!

If you're interested, they begin gathering about 8:20 (at least that's been 
their pattern over the past few days). After 15-20 minutes of flying in big 
circles over the school and surrounding area the flock (50-60?) then streams 
into the chimney for the night. It's quite fascinating.

I'm not a birder, so if anyone has more information to share, please do!

[cayugabirds-l] Lincoln's Sparrow

Looking for new arrivals, while trying to eat breakfast was trying for Larry.  
However, when he spotted a LINCOLN'S SPARROW, his toast got cold, but his heart 
was warmed!
A small sparrow with greyish head, and fine streaks on breast, with distinct 
break between streaks and below breast, with whitish throat and buffy 
coloration on top of throat and sides.  We're waiting for it to re-appear.

[cayugabirds-l] target birds

Larry and I decided to head up the lake for a quick look/see at what we might 
find on a great day.  We were not disappointed!  However, we got a late start 
and as we approached Aurora, decided we should check out Dorie's for lunch.  
Steve Fast would want to know that the deli sandwich choices were excellent and 
the home made pastries were even better!  (All birders should schedule a stop 
as the desserts were breath taking!)  While we ate our salad/sandwich on the 
outside deck we started hearing COMMON LOONS calling.  (What better way to 
enjoy a lunch?!)  We thus decided that we should stop at the Post Office 
parking lot to see if we could view any of the loons.  To our amazement, the 
lake waters were very calm, and out in the middle of the lake were 'more' than 
100 loons swimming/diving about.  We did not bother to scope out and look for 
other loons (they all looked 'common' to us); we were just so amazed to see so 
many.  Next we stopped at the MNWR visitor center to see where the  
(Glossy/White-faced) IBIS might be--our 'target birds'.  They were still, as 
recently reported, to the north-west of the center, but soon flew close to the 
building affording excellent views.  Learning that some other birders were 
heading to see if they could spot the RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD in Seneca Falls, we 
followed them after a short while.  Unfortunately, we arrived after the hummer 
had put on a performance, so as the other birders were leaving, we sat down in 
the nicely provided lawn chairs and waited 'our' turn.  Sure enough, after 
about 15 min. the hummer appeared, but not so we could get a definitive view.  
I did spot light rufous color down both sides, but only saw the bird from 
behind the feeder with a view of the undertail and never got a full front view. 
 After our obligatory stop at Sauders Market, we stopped back by to see if the 
hummer would be more cooperative.  Unfortunately, someone was walking their dog 
in the yard, and time demanded that we return.  But we had a great time finding 
our 'target' birds, as well as additional ones.

With the heat we've had lately, I am not surprised to see birds 
frequently cooling off in our (normal/basic-sized) bird bath.  However 
the other day, I was surprised to see 3 different species all trying to 
cool off at the same time!!  ROBIN, BLUE JAY and MOURNING DOVE.  One 
flew away before I could get a photo.

Wilson's Phalarope, it turns out that we left a 'small' Sibley Bird

[cayugabirds-l] white-winged Turkey Vulture

Larry and I went up the lake today for a leisure day of birding.  While 
we really didn't see anything out of the ordinary we had 'our' first 
glimpse of the (a) white-winged Turkey Vulture seen soaring about a mile 
north of King Ferry on route 90. However, we did see some 'rare 
birders'--Susan Danskin and Ann Mitchell, who will report if they saw 
anything unusual.

The beauty of the red Cardinals was very present today as we counted 17 
(!!) Cardinals at our feeders in the early afternoon.  There were at 
least 11 males, but the way they all kept flitting about, it was sort of 
difficult to count.  What a gorgeous sight!

[cayugabirds-l] SNOW GEESE

Larry and I took advantage of the nice day and took a trip around the 
lake, going up East side and down West side.  By far the most impressive 
sight was the tens of thousands of SNOW GEESE plainly visible and near 
to shore from the junction of NYS Route 89 and the southern junction of 
Lower Lake Road (North end of Cayuga Lake).  Briefly the geese were 
spooked and some of them left the water heading one direction, and 
another group headed the opposite direction before all settled down 
again, but it made for a magnificent color of white and black.  We 
looked for Ross's, but there were just too many geese to scan through to 
determine if there were any.  Continuing in a southerly direction, we 
saw 2 more large flocks of Snow Geese out on the water, but they paled 
in comparison to the thousands we were able to view up close--right by 
the shoreline.  All day long we saw huge flocks of CANADA'S and SNOW 
GEESE flying over.


We also spotted huge flocks of RED WING BLACK BIRDS, and COMMON GRACKLES 
by E. Tyer Rd. and Lay Rd just south of the NYS Thruway.  The usual 
ducks were still on the lake at various spots we stopped, and we did not 
see any Western Grebe.

[cayugabirds-l] Montezuma request

Taking advantage of the warm weather, Larry and I went up the lake today 
to verify directions to certain birding spots for the soon to be updated 
Birds of Cayuga Basin Guide.  After reading all of the posts, I think we 
should have stayed in town and done some local birding!  However, we 
persevered--even through tremendous downpours of mid-afternoon rain.  
Our problem is, as we were taking our final measurement along route 89 
and heading back route 5/20, the rains had caused an electric pole to 
come down, and we had to detour off of route 89 and onto E. Tyre Road, 
instead of joining route 5/20.  If anyone is going to Montezuma area--or 
route 89--we need the _precise_ distance on route 89 from routes 5/20 to 
where E. Tyre Road goes off to the West.  We can then add this 
measurement to our total distance to some of the birding guide routes.  
Anytime in the next two weeks would be great and you can email me off 
line.  We hate to make a 'special' trip, with the price of gas, just to 
measure what is approximately .75 of a mile, and can probably use that 
as an estimate, but we would like to be precise!

[cayugabirds-l] American Bittern/Crow preyed upon by Red Tail

Larry and I had a leisurely trip around the lake today.  Because there 
weren't the great numbers of waterfowl on the lake, our first main stop 
was Mudlock to look at the BALD EAGLE on nest with at least one visible 
gray fluff young.  Steve Kress' SFO class was also observing the nest.  
Of note around the auto loop, we did see 2 DUNLIN and a GREATER YELLOW 
LEGS. When we thought we wouldn't see much else besides the waterfowl 
which have already been reported, by Benning Marsh, Larry said he 
thought he spotted something in the grass on left side of road.  Sure 
enough, out in plain sight was a very cooperative AMERICAN BITTERN!!  It 
was fascinating to watch.  I took a couple of poor digiscope photos of

At Tsachacke Pool we saw 5 Eagles in the distance along with lots of 
GADWALL constantly bobbing their tails in air and 7 SNOW GEESE flying in 
the air.Our other interesting observation was at the DEC building on 
Morgan Rd.  When we pulled up there was a lot of commotion by 25 CROWS 
who were obviously mobbing something.  Once our scope was setup, we 
could discern in the distance off to left in trees, that a RED-TAILED 
HAWK (back to us unfortunately) had just caught an AMERICAN CROW.  The 
Hawk and prey were in a low tree near ground, and crow was still 
struggling in an attempt to get free.  After scanning the rest of area 
for ducks and watching an AMERICAN KESTRIL guarding a nest box, we would 
scan back to see if crow had any luck in escaping.  After about 15 min. 
of watching, it was obvious to us, that the Hawk had it's meal for the 
day, but we did not stay to watch if it was even able to get airborn 
with it, or just consumed on the spot.  Several of the crows took off 
after another Red-tail (mate?) and gave up on their unfortunate buddy.  
While there, Larry may have seen an AMERICANxEURASIAN TEAL hybrid.  The 
bird had a very prominent white stripe on the scapulars, but it also had 
a prominent white bar.  Once spotted it started preening and we couldn't 
ID it any clearer.  Is it possible that the Green Wing Teal (not hybrid) 
can at times display a prominent white stripe above the scapulars?


We returned via west side of lake, and because we didn't see many 
waterfowl at all, decided to stop at Stewart Park for a final view 
before sunset.  No new birds were spotted there.

[cayugabirds-l] Great Blue Heron

Amongst the Grackles, Robins and Redwings singing away this morning, a 
GREAT BLUE HERON flew over East Ithaca Rec Way--Honness Lane.  It must 
mean that the waters are opening and crayfish/frogs becoming available.


Larry and I are on our way up the lake to see what other goodies we can 
spot!

[cayugabirds-l] around the lake

We decided to take advantage of the sunny day and do some birding around 
the lake--going up West side (destination Sauders Market in Seneca 
Falls) and back down East.  Of course this latter choice made it 
difficult to get good looks at some birds due to lighting, but we did 
the best we could.  We really didn't turn up any rarities.  We were 
amazed at the great number of CANADA GEESE at every stop we made. 
MALLARDS were plentiful as were CANVASBACK and REDHEADS.  At Kidder's 
Landing we spotted PINTAIL, GREATER SCAUP, COOTS, and a flock of 50 SNOW 
GEESE in middle of lake as well as GOLDENEYE and BUFFLEHEADS.  A little 
further up the road were a couple of COMMON MERGANSERS and the first 
BLACK DUCKS that we had seen.  Heading back down the East side of the 
lake our first stop was Mudlock where we could see an EAGLE on the 
nest--but no sight of partner in nearby tree.  Also absent was the 
beautiful BEAVER we saw on the edge of the shore on Sunday.  TUNDRA 
SWANS and MUTE SWANS were visible from the Park in Cayuga, as well as 
HOODED MERGANSER, RING-NECKED DUCK and LESSER SCAUP.  Union Springs Pond 
did not turn up anything different so we went to check on the SCHREECH 
OWL on Factory Street.  We were not disappointed and found Screechie 
stufffed in the box. We also spotted a female NORTHERN SHOVELER there.  
Our next stop was at the Wells College boathouse where we got great 
looks at a pair of LONG-TAILED DUCKS.  We also saw three HORNED GREBES.  
We saw numerous RED-TAILED HAWKS on our trek, and two AMERICAN KESTREL 
as well.  While we stopped to view a NORTHERN HARRIER cruising over Rt. 
90 at Lake Road, we suddenly were astounded by the number of 
WHITE-TAILED DEER in one particular field--and stopped to count--65 was 
our tally!!  Then at the Rafferty Road junction we were astounded to see 
a massive flock of TURKEY feeding just off Rt. 90.  While we turned 
around to count this huge flock, other cars seemed to pass, totally 
oblivious to the 57 which we ended up counting!!  While we didn't find 
any unusual birds, we had a great day.

[cayugabirds-l] robins

On a walk up Eastern Heights Rec Way this morning I also spotted 
Robins--a flock of between 25-30.  They were sitting quite still 
munching on left-over black fruit, and appearing as still as the 
half-dozen Cedar Waxwings which were also there.


Last week I spotted about 50 Robins on the East Hill Rec Way.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Vulture in the snow?

Perhaps the Turkey Vulture was on the way towards sniffing out an animal 
carcass.  I was sort of surprised to notice a TV on the ground working 
on an animal carcass around 10 a.m. this morning, in the open field area 
south of Kendall.  I sort of forgot about this, until seeing France's 
post.  A couple of Crows were also trying to feed on the carcass (I'm 
not sure of the nature of the carcass, as I sort of didn't see, until 
after I'd driven by and noticed the TV.)

I was surprised to see a Turkey Vulture today by the Cayuga Mall
valiantly attempting to find a thermal in the snow. Such a weird
sight.

[cayugabirds-l] late Chipping Sparrow

I read with interest Meena's post about a late Chipping Sparrow, when I 
just sat down for lunch and spotted on our feeder another 'late' 
CHIPPING SPARROW.  Perhaps those young ones are late leaving!

[cayugabirds-l] pine siskins

After having been gone on vacation for a period of time, and reading 
that Pine Siskins had returned to Ithaca, we are glad that we had our 
neighbor fill up our bird feeders while we were gone.  The Siskins (3) 
were here in their glory this morning as we looked out the window at our 
feeder (off Mitchell St).  There was also a pair of Purple Finches.

[cayugabirds-l] Turkey

I just returned from a walk up Eastern Heights Rec. Way and as I was 
coming down the hill a large Tom Turkey flew across the walk way; landed 
in the woods and rapidly 'jogged' through the woods away from the 
walkway.  This was the first time I've seen a turkey in this area--aside 
from the domestic turkeys which are fenced in.  Perhaps they've been 
calling to him?


Further along, on the East Ithaca Rec Way, half way between Honness Lane 
and Mitchell St there were 20 Blue Jays just apparently 'hanging out' 
together in a tree!  Neat.
