cf8 data source dynamically, and the neo-datasource.xml file seems to be the

ColdFusion8 silent installation

2008-08-10 Thread Don L
It seems to me that ColdFusion8 may be installed siliently. Digging its doc is
inclusive, so, I have two questions here.
A) Have you ever installed cf8 siliently (be it Windows or Unix)?
B) If yes, how does the cf8 installer properties file differ from that of cf7?
(I have the complete cf7 installer properties file)

Thank you.

Enterprise App and CFwindow

2008-08-07 Thread Don L
Hello,

I got the impression that virtually no one uses CFwindow as is for any
enterprise app (EA) and those who use it for EA have heavily modified it
(probably got rid of the bloated bulky part of it, while it's understandable
for open source code for such state of performance... in my case it does not
seem to be practical...

Such an impression is about three or four months old. Where are we now on this?

Thanks.

Simplest WYSIWYG Text Editor

2008-05-26 Thread Don L
I know I'm good (ok, I meant, I worked half an hour here, and then half an hour
there on this little project), now, I've got this little 'tough' simple WYSIYG
text editor to be working in IE (tested IE7, should be fine with IE6, expected
to be supported by Firefox3). Call it 'tough' because it can work with some
bloated (so called popular) open source js libraries as well... and CF's much
touted ajax related tags like cfwindows too...

If anyone is interested shoot me an email (all I'm asking is "do good not evil"
even for a little tool).

Motivation: fed up with some slow dog text editor and its reliability issue.

(ot) Simple Tool

2008-05-21 Thread Don L
I 'accidentally' designed and developed a super simple survey tool (yeah, I
know zillions of the same type out there). Got two questions here:
a) is it all right to post its beta URL here for opinion/feedback?
b) someone may have done something similar (not the functional side but on the
simplicity side), care to share some thoughts, better, insights, on marketing
(not some quick Internet search digging).

Thanks.

Thank you for the update, Rob. I tend to think a lot of small businesses don't
have PDF Writer (how did I spell 'Writor' last time? man!) but they may need to
fill some government PDF forms (more desirable to do it online if
feasible...because it would be more efficient). Your app would be a great
service I think.

William, you're a good guy. I have an app that runs inside cfwindow, within it
all sorts of ajax tags/functions including Inline Editing (never saw anything
like that before, totally 'cooked up' by myself, which might have existed
elsewhere berore). I'd be happy to send you such source code (not in its
entirety but maybe sufficient for your reference, email me donli at yahoo.com).

Also, I'd like to mention Sam Farmer got me started with cfajaxproxy, that's
wonderful and I'm grateful to him for that.

Thansk, Rob. Clearly this is a step toward right direction. Reading up doc on
this family tag a bit, it seems to suggest that:
a) one could populate a PDF form with preloaded XML data (via the XMLdata
Attribute) provided that he/she knows the form structure;
b) the PDF form may also be populated via the Child tag of ,
e.g.
. This part also seems to denote
that if Value Attribute is blank or omitted, probably such PDF form fields
would be inputable (not sure if it's a word, but people get the point).
But here again, one has to know FORM fields beforehand. If not, it looks like
the READ action could do the job...

Has anyone created a process/little app to address this (making a readonly PDF
form web editable)?

Here you have a read-only pdf document with form fields to fill in and you
don't have a PDF Writor or Editor package. How to fill the PDF form

Hi Gerald, were you referring to the following url for the current cfc for this
editor?
http://dev.fckeditor.net/browser/FCKeditor/trunk/fckeditor.cfc?rev=735

fyi 1, my current implementation of this editor with CFTEXTAREA is barely ok,
not efficient at all and reliability seems less than desirable as well.

fyi 2, my use case for text editor for this app is very complex, virtually all
other WYSIWYG editors have failed (one more option to try, would need very
focused attention...)

Thanks.

On cfajaxproxy, agree whole-heartedly that it's probably the most powerful
feature of all cf8 related ajax function/feature (at least to some of us). One
would hope that CF's next release would add more to this amazing tag as well
among others...

On FCKeditor, I just didn't remember how to spell it and not bothering looking
it up. If one technique would work, which I haven't tested yet, a very viable
alternative work for an app of mine (on efficiency scale of at 200% over
FCKeditor but I'll stop right here, many likes this editor...). On a similar
note, I don't have the luxury to spend over 50% of time on technical stuff...
">BTW FCKeditor has a CFC that works out of the box... very nice."
Please tell me more about that (or probably the editor's web site would have
info on that but again your insight would be more valuable...) in case one
technique for the alternative does not work.

Regards,

Don

Cftextarea and "Fukeditor"

2008-05-18 Thread Don L
Maybe I've misspelt the editor. With cf8 standard (8.0, not 8.0.1), with the
Cftextarea tag using Fukeditor's Basic tool configuration. If there's double
quotes (") inside the textarea, cfajax related tag such as cfajaxproxy
referencing data inside the textreaa would generate an error.

Quite likely I won't be using this editor for production, posting the above for
the benefit of those who's still using this option.

instead, it should be for
CFAJAXPROXY at least. I did not test with ...
anyway, I need ID Attribute ...

Cfajaxproxy and form hidden field

2008-05-14 Thread Don L
I'm using cfajaxproxy with cfc and js class call to process a form. The form's
hidden field wasn't passed on because the cfc's arguments list does not contain
it.
Does this tag's ajax part fail to recognize the hidden field within a form or
am I missing something?

Thanks.

On "form substitution", very interesting stuff, tell me more about it.

Disagree. Server-side validation, traditionally means to send a form to cf
server and have the cf server run some code to check the data on a relational
db or desktop db or whatever data source, then if there's data problem, alert
user with cf type code. Here's the difference is to use ajax do js call for a
cfc that does the db side data check then do alert or not. I don't enjoy
writing this to refute you...

Sever-side data validation with ajax

2008-05-13 Thread Don L
The good news seems that one could validate server-side data using ajax call to
send the form data but the down side seems to be the UI err presentation part,
when there's data problem one would prompt/alert user about it, the js alert
function is one way, write some sort of msg and make it VISIBLE on top of the
problematic field is another (I like this approach better, btw, fairly easily
done), popup is sometimes deemed annoying (alert is popup). What's your
thought?

Thanks.

List order mess-up with cfc and ajax

2008-05-12 Thread Don L
What's the odd ball. Form has dynamic elements with each starts with the
letter of "A" (e.g., A1, A2, A..n) among other elements, form is passed to
cfajaxproxy/cfc/js combo and submitted multiple times (specifically submitted
at each element level, intended).

On the cfc end, partially code looks like this:

ListLast(AList) does not always return the last appended item, how come?

Envs: OS = Windows XP; CF = CF8 Stardard.

Thanks.

Yes, thanks, my own, kind of limited, experience with web service has been that
the cf web service does not seem to be very reliable in terms of performance
(and maybe it's not on the cfml engine side). The experience was, I used web
service to query a special db (optimized query) and extract and output result
to requester, initially the whole process (query and extraction and pass them
along as parameters of another query, return final results) was very efficient,
either late last year or early this year. Then, haven't touched it for a
while, lately when I played with it again without any changes whatsover but
decidedly slower (for an efficiency maniac like me), not good enough. This
puzzled me on its culprit ...

Now, back to the issue, I'd like to find out many possible ways/approaches to
solve a problem (eliminate the least likely candidates in the first place),
then, check out the most promising one(s) ...

Thanks.

Thank you for the good info. I now dug up some info on OpenBD, one version

Re: Writing a re-usable business function with CF8

2008-05-09 Thread Don L
>> standalone business function

The key word here is Flexibility. Probably in essence, there are two big
groups of web programming languages: java-based (CFML etc.) vs. Microsoft-based
(asp, asp.NET etc.).

And if my understanding is correct, any asp code would run under IIS web server
without anything else; As for asp.NET, I don't know. Now, for java-based code
for web use, like CFML, the usual route is to use Adobe's CFML engine. But you
brought up an interesting option of using free CFML-compatible engine, however,
I have some concerns and before I get into that, let me say, here the business
case is, try to distribute a business function built in CF to your potential
customers or whoever else (hence, the few requirements of installing this and
that the better, naturally the more dependency the less reliability...).

Now, what if there's some free and light J2EE component, that be easily plugged
into any web server, then, what? maybe, any compiled cfml code (java bytecode)
can run under such a web server environement, a probable yes? And what's this
option's key benefits if it's available?
a) performance probably would be good because of less overhead (not implying
cfml-compatible engines are not);
b) customers are more likely receptive to it?

Thanks.

and then make it distributable to virtually any web server platform (say, for
windows, IIS (5x,6x,7x?); for unix/linux flavor, Apache).

Some of you may have thought of this or even have been there done that.
Off my head, I'm thinking:
a) the business function;
b) a 'connector' to the target web server? Or better, if the web server is
J2EE-compliant then it can execute CF code right away but how many web servers
are at this level in the market now? a royal question...
(Am really wondering and talking loud...)

Fancy auto-suggest

2008-05-09 Thread Don L
I think there was a thread talking about two connected levels of auto-suggest
or auto-suggest chain. A quick search did not yield it. Does anyone happen to
recall something to the effect of that thread title?

The flow would be like something like the following:
(Instruction:
a) first type an alphabetic letter in the box below to select categry;
b) press [space bar] after category select, then type the first digit of a
zipcode.
-
a) pick a category of interest;
b) upon selection + space bar + auto-suggest zipcode
-

It shouldn't be difficult to do but am lazy (if someone has done just 'borrow'
it...)...

Also, equally importantly, for public-facing app, how would you write the
instruction above the Select box to ensure smart or dumb users can all
understand and use it?

Another approach to solve the above problem would be to use two auto-suggest
ajax control with two Select boxes, which might be clearer to users (especially
for the public-facing app), however, personally I prefer the first/top
approach, which seems more efficient...

Thanks.

First, great question.

The state of data for each CFlayoutarea tab is loaded (loaded upon the CFlayout
execution) by default also seems to be confirmed in a way by the Source
Attribute of this Tag in the LiveDocs. It would be very desirable to another
Attribute called to the effect of "Load" and default to True something, then
for those of us efficiency maniacs, we can set the Load Attribute to False upon
first load for all tabs other than the Selected one.

Sorry it does not answer your question but I hope it's relevant.

CFdirectory under ColdFusion 8 (Standard)

2008-05-02 Thread Don L
Oddities with this tag (OS=XP Professional):

the Sort attribute failed (it did not list files in z to a order).

output includes Thumbs.db (the Type Attribute is supposed to eliminate the
Thumbs.db or is it my misunderstanding?)

Thanks.

If I understand your question correctly (one to multiple answers to one quesion
with checkbox) then one efficient way to capture the data would be something
like the following (you have to work on it...):

// the element list ...

 insert into answers (questionidfk,answer,empID,surveyID) values
 (#ListLast(Evaluate("Form.#field#"),"_")#,'#Evaluate(field)#',#session.
 empID#,#url.survey#);
// try not to Evaluate function here...

follow-up which didn't work for me, not sure if I'm the only one...). sorry.

Ok, here's another one, located in OK, hostfolio.com. If sufficient interest

Firebug not playing nice

Upon loading ajax extensive page, it hangs (at creatingXMLhttpRequest ...)
But everything was working just fine with FF and security frame for FF or the
network has not changed (at least not to my knowledge) and the same app works
fine with IE (6/7).

Have any of you encountered a similar problem?
FF version is 2.0.0.14.

Ajax: Who's into Ajax and Business Cases

2008-04-18 Thread Don L
First of all, the Ajax list activitity is not high, hence, I'm posting it to
this one for more readership (it's also cf-related).

The main purpose of this post to find out who in this community are Much Into
Ajax (I wish I could make them bold, to stand out), and equally important, you
know how to make business cases with ajax features and functions.

Secondly, about Ajax resource (even cf-specific ajax resources) sharing. Let
me start with one, I find www.ajaxian.com useful.

Thanks.

P.S. 1) It would be nice if people post Ajax related topic with prefix of
"Ajax: " for future reference.
P.S. 2) I propose to the list owner, to consider to expand the "ColdFusion
Talk" to "Web App Development Talk centered on ColdFusion", I know a bit long
...

For temporary data manipulation, in general, "variable table", is more
efficient than creating temporary tables, however, there are two exceptions
where one can't use this technique. You may consider BOL for more detail.

Thanks, I missed the doc, however, I intend to set a font size for content
inside Text Area and Font selector is not included in my richeditor config.
Attempt to use Style="font-size:smaller" as another attribute did not have

Well, first of all, good to know and thanks. I used quite a bit of the new
ajax related tags/functions, which uses YUI, Ext libraries and from Firebug, I
seem to remember, they uses CSS from these libraries as well, but not including
"reset" templates?

Lots of bugs with cold fusion 8 (standard edition)

2008-04-16 Thread Don L
Today I've found another one, ,
also tried ,
The font size Attribute does not work, check livedocs without indication as to
what type of syntax it's expecting. Or is it just me? No, I did not run
8.0.1, weary of it...

Thanks, Dave. Well, 'historically' usually the designer type took care of css,
now the weird thing is, when I tried to set default font size to small, IE7
didn't 'barge'. I feel this is a catch-22 situation. On one hand, if the home
page
using a smaller font size, subsequent pages do not look good while leaving the
default font size to 100% does not make the starting page look good. Don't
know how to reconcile the esthetic and practicality.

default font size for a page

2008-04-16 Thread Don L
Never paid too much attention to CSS, now it seems to bite me. Is it possible
to set a default font size to, say, 85%? so that, all the key ideas can be
viewed on one screen without scrolling (suppose we know users' screen size)?
Also, the majority of the user community is not supposed to know how to set
font size with their browser.

My attempt of using
style="font-family:'Trebuchet
MS',Tahoma,Verdana,Arial,Helvetica;font-size:.85em;"
or similar approach does not seem to have desired effect with IE7.

Thanks.

Hey Joel, thank you for your thought. I knew it :) The idea was, T for
technology, B for business, and V for Value; using Technology to

My key point was, to re-use cfform's built-in client data validation capability
for my case if that's possible, for one thing, it saves time of reventing
wheel, for instance, do you build you own credit card validation schema? or
borrow algo for it?
If it can I think Adobe would help and save a lot of developers' time, to say
the least.

I think probably you're right. Readers are not supposed to infer my comment of
// ignore data capture, which means, I've already taken care of validation data
capture after validation at each interval/form sending via ajax call. Also,
the idea of not using the exising "form group" with tabs is to further
eliminate error/misundertanding possibility (when you have only one form in
front of you/user at any given point of time).

Thanks.

Are you an expert in, say, DOM? To my knowledge, each and all "web"/script
page, be it written in cf, jsp, asp, php, would be rendered by a UA (browser
here), and the underlying technology for that is DOM, so, it does not matter
how many HTML forms on a 'page'/script the web server sends to the browser, the
UI would do it its rendering. I could write client side javascript for data
validation for each form, however, that approach/technique defeats the purpose
of using CFFORM (which does data validation among others), why reinvest the
wheel? Or am I not thinking straight? But if you're saying, cf-supported data
validation can only support one form on a page/script then its design is
totally yester-year, and I hope Adobe engineers can step up the challenge,
thks. I hope you see that I have a fairly strong business case for this...

Unfortunately multi-tab form is parallel (I believe) while my case is
sequential processing (also presenting as fewer data and tab on the screen as
possible). Thanks though.

Multiple forms on same page and client side data validation

2008-04-14 Thread Don L
Hi,

Has anyone moved on to more interactivity and more client side processing?
I admit this is my first one of this type.
Env: cold fusion 8 standard.

The idea is to utilize the built-in cf client side data validation (handy, e.g.
credit card etc). Let me know if you have better luck, thanks.

Requirement/Problem Detail
--
Requirement:
a) do client side data validation for form 1;
// ignore data capture
b) move on to form 2

Well, I think probably you missed my point or I'm lousy in getting points
across. I'm more like looking for originality in solution, and bear with me
for a shameful self-promotioin, case one, I've used cfajaxproxy its 'crew',
with other cf tag/function, and with dom etc. to create a feature, that my beta
users say, 'wow, it's very cool, I like it very much'. So, with the same
token, other developers may have done the same (using same/similar
technology/techniques) to create something new and exciting, and most of all,
Useful.

Yes, your point of branching out to other proven libraries is well taken, I
need to evaluate cost/benefit for that approach...

Thanks.

Looking for creative implementation of cf ajax related tags/functions

2008-04-10 Thread Don L
Technically I'm talking about using cf8; on business end, I'm talking about
adding/creating Business Value while improving User Experience. One particular
tag to me is CFAJAXPROXY, and I've used it in tandom with some other cf
feature(s) to create something new (and hopefully, it can achieve some of its
business goal to some degree).

Yes, I've done quite a bit of research in this particular area, so, to those
who's also very interested in this topic and have made substantial advance, yet
with humility, care to share resources and a bit of your creativity? to
ego-maniac, show me your beef if you truly got some.

To make the point further clearer, can you make the CFAJAXPROXY or its family
tags bend, yes, bend? (I couldn't go any further at this point)

Thanks.

Just some notes since we're at it.
* It feels good a problem has been resolved (I'm a paid customer).
* Damon is an exceptional executive.
- The process takes 4 or 5 Adobe engieers a whole week to figure it out or ?
- I believe I've tried the same technique if memory serves with both IE7 and
FF2 (Akamai probably had a dirty hand with FF2... IE7, don't know, weird
though, deleting temp file poped up a tiny status bar...; I've tried another
computer ...)

PLEASE stop here and let this thing DIE.

First of all, did you get a sense that the person understood the Problem
Statement?
Which is,
// at step 1
input type="hidden" id='passDataOn' value=''
// after step 1 (first form submission), Expected Result
input type="hidden" id='passDataOn' value='newData'
// the value Attribute IS POPULATED

Not achieving intended result !== code error;

Adobe CF Customer Support Experience

2008-04-03 Thread Don L
Here's my Adobe CF support experience, hope you've had a better luck. But
first, let me say, their top executive for CF, Damon, is superb and extremely
professional. But it seems to got lost down the chain or in the 'translation'
something.

Here's the scoop.
Problem Statement
-
"I find it PAINFUL that some of the
cfjax-related functions I'm implementing are not
consistent in reliability. For instance, I don't have
any problem writing data to db via CFAJAXPROXY call to
cfc and js class to the same page, and I can also,
retrieve some data and bind it to a DIV of the caller
page for Display, but the "client side data binding"
fails to do binding at Value attribute level, e.g.
psuduo code:
bind to div id{'showData'}
// result: data retrieved from the
biding

// however, for the following binding
// methods: a) cfc - js class;
// b)at direct target level of bind:cfcName.Method()
bind to input type="hidden" id='passDataOn'
// result
input type="hidden" id='passDataOn' value=''
How come?
-
PROBLEM: value Attribute is expected to have some value but NONE!

(Time: Monday, March 31)

This morning, I finally got an Adobe engineer's email:
"
Hi Don,

I understand that you are facing some issue with CFAJAXPROXY.
I am the QA for AJAX and I would like to know the problem in detail.
Also I would need a code snippet that fails. The code that you have attached,
works fine for us.

I need a failing code so that I exactly know what is going wrong where.

Could you please find some time for this so that we can provide you with a
quick solution?

Thanks,
xxx
---

What I would expect would be to the effect of the following,
"
Don,

I've looked at the attached three templates (caller, cfc and js), the problem
you described of cf8's failure of binding/adding to a FORM hidden field's Value
attribute with a CFC returned simple value did not occur to us (it works for
us). Or indeed the cfc's callback value wasn't written to the hidden field's
Value attribute.

If the second case is true, we ...

"

I responded with request for clarification right away, got no response.

Am I not a reasonable customer?

Yes, Azadi, I did change the order to no avail. The b) possibility is very
strong, another sign, when I clear the browser cache, a tiny tab showed up in
the status bar, which never happened before or MS has changed the IE7.

Cutter, console.log(id) returns correct value, database captures data as
