Re: Developer Platform suggestions was Re: Nice
Jesse I appreciate your answer, and it does surprise me! I have no experience with win2k, but was put off by winXP's constant nagging (kinda' reminds me of myself). Why XP over 2k? I will use some Java also. I have been experimenting with JEdit -- it appears to be a great editor. I especially like the ability to fold (compress and expand) independent portions of a program or document (based on indentation or user-supplied information). I also use ViennaSQL as a general-purpose GUI SQL Client. You can interface any db with a JDBC driver, and interactively do such things as: define connections (similar to define datasources in the CF admin) create/drop databases create/alter/drop tables examine schemas issue SQL commands I find it to be a great development tool - you can interactively create and validate complex SQL, then copy/paste it to your CF code. I mention JEdit and ViennaSQL because I think that both these functions are performed by DWMX on non-Mac platforms. I understand the advantage of using 1 integrated tool, but does DWMX provide the same functions (and provide them as well) as JEdit and ViennaSQL.? Finally, is PostgreSQL available for win -- I heard somewhere that it is not? Dick, As far as the SQL stuff you're using ViennaSQL for, you can do most things in Jedit using the SQL plugin. Just add the JDBC driver for your RDBMS of choice (I use SQL Server 2000 and MySQL) and then you can write SQL in Jedit and select Plugins SQL Execute Buffer and the command will be run against your connection of choice. There isn't a visual interface, but it's pretty easy if you're solid on SQL commands and syntax. I do have to honestly say that despite my worries going in, XP Pro has been rock solid and better stability-wise than 2k for me. I tended to demo a lot of software on my development system (install it and remove it), and XP seems to clean up better. 2k always required a reinstall every X-months, XP has been incredible. Actually seems faster, too. I'm not pushing it out throughout the enterprise strictly from a cost standpoint, but if cost weren't an issue, I would have XP all over the place. I still don't understand -- how does an application grab control from the OS? Doesn't the OS have control of switching between Applications? I sometimes screw things up myself, if while typing really fast (for me) I inadvertently type some keyboard shortcut (ctrl-something) that tells the OS to switch applications, open a dialog, or somesuch. Is this what you are talking about? If so, then I agree that it would be nice to have an OS enhancement that would protect you from yourself, e.g. a special setting (toggle) that would block keystrokes that could cause toe OS to change focus. Happens to me also... This is the reason I don't allow my IM windows to open automatically, I have them flash in the system tray. Actually I don't think I've had an application alert happen ( and go away ) like this in quite some time now... I suspect it's becoming less and less common for apps to automagically hog up the system caret in favor of minimized, flashing system tray or taskbar items... which is probably a good thing. If the majority of the program I ran wasn't windows based, I'd run redhat linux. Dick, I think you're going about this the wrong way tho. OSX shows a lot of promise from what I've seen (despite that it's a day and a dollar too late). Hell, I'm jealous of OSX that it runs on top of a stable platform like BSD. There is nothing inheritantly wrong with OSX and the MyOS is better than YourOS is always going to be a heated discussion. I'd seriously invest in another layer of humor and thick skin and not worry about it so much. If you really want to make everyone happy on the list (opposed to yourself) then... get a wintel or redhat box for the purpose of a development server. I don't think you realized the can of worms you opened on yourself when you ported CFMX to OSX. ;) ~Todd On Tue, 10 Sep 2002, Dick Applebaum wrote: Ya' know, it gets pretty old... IMHO, I'd go with Linux. Not only does CF run the best on Linux, but you also have access to any kind of text editor/IDE you could want. Many of them are way better than DMX, which isn't saying much I know, but there it is. Plus, Linux is as stable as it gets and is free. I did have a developer version of Oracle running in parallel with SQL Server...had to remove it. due to limitations of my hard drive.. i mean its cheap to get a new hard drive.. but i am tripple booting Win2k, Win NT and WinXP for development purposes and just havent had the time to re-build. I would love to get one of those 120GB WD SE's and Re-do all of it from scratch.. Maybe install Linux as well. NET Framework is free and coding in C#.. u really dont need anything.. other than a basic IDE. C# is basically Microsofts version of Java.. but compiled into MSIL before execution. SQL Server... I think u can get a developer edition. Re: Developer Platform suggestions was Re: Nice
Jochem Emotionally, I agree with you! I am even teased when I come across a reference to the Mac (Darwin, Rapsody, etc.) in the CFMX code. I took this to mean that there was intent to support the Mac (past, present or future). From what I perceive, this is not likely to happen -- at bets the Mac will be an unsupported platform. But it is too much of a disadvantage to develop on an unsupported platform. I can't even report problems (Oh, of course it won't work-- that's unsupported-- does it work on platform X?) I can't expect real problems to be fixed, when the manufacturer doesn't derive any income from the platform. I often get derision or disrespect for my choice of an (obviously) inferior platform -- even when asking a simple question. I could easily spend 30 hours a week trying to get all the CFMX bells and whistles working on my unsupported platform -- and never quite get there! Then, a future release of CFMX could include some Must Have fixes (bugs, security, etc.) and specifically preclude running on the Mac. So, for purposes of making a business decision, the Mac is not an option for ColdFusion. So, what is? Which? Windows or Linux? If you want to keep things simple and don't want to have to fuss with linux driver compatibilities, etc. Then, go with Windows 2000 or XP. Why? If you've never dealt with linux before, you'll thank me. Yes, it's gotten easier to install, but despite what Matt L. says, it doesn't mean it's gotten easier to use overall. What db(s) should I put on the developer box -- I want to be able to develop and demonstrate entirely on a laptop (and I rule out MS-Access as a viable db for presentations/demonstrations)? If you want dbs that don't cost money: -MySQL -PostgreSQL Otherwise, SQL Server 2k (MDSE version is free I think) will run you a pretty penny (and, same with oracle). IBM DB2 Developer edition is free as well. What should I expect to pay for hardware software for a complete, self-contained development system? Roughly $2-3 grand for hardware. The packages we got recently from dell runs about $1500-$1800, not bad for a work machine w/ 19 monitor. Software depends. What all are you looking to do? I run: -Apache (free) -CFMX Developer edition (free) -MySQL (free) -datamodelling tool (casestudio.com - $325) -Photoshop ($900+) -Flash MX (better off getting Studio MX for that price) Also misc. programs for sound editing, video editing, etc. There are plenty of free alternatives out there, but your development platform should try to mimic the production platform as close as possible. RE: Developer Platform suggestions was Re: Nice
Do you have NET, SQL Server Oracle installed on your developer machine/ Yes, you can run all of those on a laptop. On my laptop, running Win2K Server SP3, I have SQL Server 2000 and the .NET Framework, among other things. I don't have Oracle installed right now, but several people here run Oracle 8.1.7 on their laptops, just for fun. Are there free/reasonable developer versions of these available. Yes. You can download Oracle from the Oracle Technet site for free, for development use (http://technet.oracle.com/). It requires some patience, since it's a very slow download, and Oracle 9i for Windows is four CDs. You can likewise download the .NET Framework and install it on any Windows 2000 machine for free - and that's all you really need for ASP.NET development. (Visual Studio.NET is nice, but there's a free ASP.NET development tool called WebMatrix available here: http://www.asp.net/.) There's a developer version of SQL Server 2000, but it's still about $400 or so, which isn't really that bad, but even there, you have alternatives. For CF development, you can use MSDE, which is essentially SQL Server without the Enterprise Manager console application: http://www.microsoft.com/sql/techinfo/development/2000/MSDE2000.asp The reason I ask is I want a completely self-contained environment on a laptop -- that I can use for development and demonstration to clients. In that case, I'd recommend Windows 2000 over Linux. There are several reasons I'd make that recommendation. One is simply that you're less likely to run into installation issues with your laptop - while Linux can be made to run on most laptops, the manufacturers don't necessarily make it easy. To take that one step farther, any gadgets that you want to hook up to your laptop will generally be supported under Windows, but maybe not under Linux. Another is familiarity - you and your clients are probably more familiar with the Windows interface; since you're getting this to demo to clients, they'll be looking right at it, and you won't have to answer stupid questions like where's the Start menu on this thing. This extends to sharing files (Word docs, Powerpoint presentations, etc) with those clients. Another is simply that there are more commercial applications generally available on Windows - I can't think of one database diagrammer available for Linux, for example. I won't argue that Windows is a better server platform than Linux, but I think it's a more generally useful platform for most laptop users. But before you ditch OS X, you might just try running everything you need within Virtual PC, on either a Windows or Linux virtual OS. I do this for some things, and the performance isn't that bad for development purposes. On occasion, I run two virtual OS sessions (both Windows 2000, usually) without noticeable degradation in responses from services within those sessions. If I recall correctly, you already have a copy of Virtual PC, so you might have nothing to lose by trying this approach. On Tuesday, September 10, 2002, at 10:57 , Dick Applebaum wrote: The fact that an OS is good or bad isn't the issue. What I need is an OS that supports my Developer platform of choice and vise-versa. Well, it really depends on how closely you need your laptop to mirror any production environment you're building for. If your target is Solaris / Oracle, then developing on Windows / SQL Server will probably hurt you (because SQL Server and Oracle are so different). Depends on how much SQL you're developing. Linux / Oracle (free!) seems a good option. Linux is very stable and fast. There's a lot of good tools for it. Linux is case sensitive so developing on Linux also means you won't have pain through trying to port CaSeInSeNsItIvE Windows code to Unix. Mostly, this is an issue of database support. I'm doing some very Oracle-specific stuff right now which means I need a network connection to an Oracle 9i instance (since Oracle doesn't run on my Mac). In general, when I'm not pushing the Oracle envelope, Mac does just fine for me and I find it less hassle than Linux for day-to-day work (since you also need to deal with documents, email, graphics etc etc). Make a list of exactly what software you need (generically) and then pick good options for each platform and make your decision based on that. Just for the record, here's my development environment: - Mac OS X (relying heavily on BSD and Java 1.3.1 environments) - CFMX port (with the known non-working stuff) - Oracle 9i drivers and a 'net connection to a suitable instance - SQL Grinder for working with databases - DWMX for some editing, vi for others - Flash MX, Fireworks MX (for all graphics, rich client stuff) - Mac CVS for version control - Office X (a partially necessary evil) - Fire (multi-client chat app) What db(s) should I put on the developer box -- I want to be able to develop and demonstrate entirely on a laptop (and I rule out MS-Access as a viable db for presentations/demonstrations)? That appears to be the *big* question... What should I expect to pay for hardware software for a complete, self-contained development system? Including all the software? Also, what software packages beyoun the basic OS? See above - this will also have a big impact on cost. Re: Developer Platform suggestions was Re: Nice
I personally have stuck with Win2k and have been very pleased. I run three dev boxes. Two desktops and one laptop. One desktop runs Apache and the others are IIS. I primarily develop in mySQL/win. Its dirt-simple to use, free, resource-light, has a great enterprise mgr (3rd party) and is what I use in production. I recode as needed (usually only db create and alter templates) for Oracle, MS SQL and Access. One dev box with 1gb of RAM has mySQL, MSDE (SQL Server) and Oracle 9i running, all at the same time, w/about 400 mb ram unused at bootup. The key to this is boatloads of RAM. Oracle is the big hog in this regard. All machines also run cf 4.5 and cfmx (port 8500) concurrently. I use Studio 4.5. I'll bet you can still get a copy cheap on ebay. My laptop runs mySQL and MSDE only. Thats all I need for road warrior stuff. My desktops are - get this - P II 400's maybe 2 yrs old, built to spec. With a lot of ram and disk space thats fine for dev work, although MX's sloth is changing that opinion. The laptop is one of those teeny 3lb, 1'' thick Sonys with a 12'' scrn. When I travel I like it light. Cost me $1100 on a closeout at CDW last November. --- Matt Robertson[EMAIL PROTECTED] MSB Designs, Inc., www.mysecretbase.com --- __ Your ad could be here. I really, really hate to say this but, if you are a Mac user the closet match for you will most likely be Windows 2000 or XP. Unless you really like the terminal window (command line) in OSX. Then maybe Linux may fit you. I do realize that Linux has many GUI that are very good, but you will still have to use the command line some time. Joe That's probably good advice for most, but I'd prefer off-the-shelf hardware -- even if I pay more -- just so I don't have to screw around with the hardware. I figure regardless of platform I will need to constantly fiddle with the software. I have some experience with, Win 31, win 95, win 98, win NT, win XP (the nag), Yellow Dog Linux, Red Hat Linux, and BSD Mac OS X. I have developed with everything from Assembler, AlGol, ForTran, CoBOL, Forth, APL, Tiny C, Pascal, Perl, PHP, VBS, JavaScript/JScript, Flash/ActionScript, Java, and ColdFusion -- I like ColdFusion the best -- but thing that Java will be a requirement. You can - as you mentioned - use MSDE for MS SQL. Its free, included on any Office CD and if you own an MS product with MSDE on it you are licensed to use it (I checked with MS a few months back). But you don't get the Enterprise Manager. I use a combination of SQL statements and eyeballing the data in Studio's odbc tab. Fortunately not my primary environment. Oracle, however, won't set a developer back any money at all. Just go to Oracle.com and sign up for a dev license. You get a fully functional ver licensed only for dev use. Then all you need is a couple of gigs of space and a bunch of time to download the monstrous thing... and about 500 mb of RAM to run it without paging. --- Matt Robertson[EMAIL PROTECTED] MSB Designs, Inc., www.mysecretbase.com --- -- Original Message -- from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] date: Tue, 10 Sep 2002 14:51:57 -0400 (EDT) Otherwise, SQL Server 2k (MDSE version is free I think) will run you a pretty penny (and, same with oracle). RE: Developer Platform suggestions was Re: Nice
Dick, I've used a Windows2K box for a couple years now with pretty solid performance using the following: CF Server 4, 4.5, 5 and then MX IIS 5 Webserver - included in the Win2K Pro OS SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition MySQL Access 2000 (spit) Tomcat Jakarta Apache 1.3.x (not in unison, mind you - in a separate install) For development IDE - CF Studio 4, 5 and then HomeSite+ as well as Jedit (which is equally beautiful on the PC as on Mac). The up side is it runs everything on one box, the downside is it's Windows. The other downside is that it's pricey if you have to buy all this software for Windows. As far as hardware requirements, I've run it on two machines: 1. Compaq Presario 1200 XL-111 500 mhz AMD K6-2 192mb Ram 6gb HDD 2. Sony VAIO PCG-F590 700 mhz PIII 128mb Ram 17gb HDD Both ran reasonably well and it was easy enough since everything was on one machine. It can be painful if you don't have enough RAM or if you're working with a fairly large DB. But for development purposes I always use a subset of data anyway. The only other downside I can see is that with Win2K PRO I get problems from time to time with IIS saying that too many people are connected to the webserver and locking me out. I believe Win2K PRO has a setting to allow only 10 connections to the server and I have yet to find a way to change that as the logical location has the option greyed out. I primarilly get this when working with a multi-framed document. I've not used CF on Linux so I can't comment there, nor have I worked with Oracle, so I can't comment there either. RE: Developer Platform suggestions was Re: Nice
Dick, just think of it this way... if you develop on a MS platform, you'll be able to bill the clients for 25% more time than it would take to develop on a mac! Besides, the clients are probably more used to inferior product! Now, in all seriousness, I develop CF on a W2k box at my office because that is what they provide me. They pay for all the software/hardware and I get to use what THEY pick for databases etc. so I can't give much help with free software. I'm thinking of trying to develop CF as a side job to raise some money, but would guess I won't get to do that on my iMac (even tho I'd kill to be able to do so!). I've seen some vendors traveling with 2 laptops and they do demos with them cabled together - one is the 'server' and the other is the 'client' - they do that because the customers don't believe that there's any way you can put a server on a laptop and do demos like it is both a client and server! Maybe you could buy a cheap non-apple laptop and install Linux server on it and impress the clients with your portable network! You could still use your mac as the client and development box. If you do decide to venture over to the dark side, I wouldn't blame you... my kids would rather eat than just be happy saying Daddy develops on a macintosh! I will say that I (tho I'm sure I'm in the minority) do appreciate your efforts and your constant chatter on this list. I try to read every one of your notes because you've got the kind of guts to state your opinions (no matter how wrong everyone else is! HA). You're my kind of guy. Re: Developer Platform suggestions was Re: Nice
Matt You make it sound like I can sell my Mac stuff, buy equivalent wintel come out $ ahead?? Should I expect to get win2K or win XP included in the price of a laptop? Do you find MySQL deficiencies (transaction, stored procedures, etc), force recoding or dumbing-down of your db interface? What's the 3rd party enterprise manager? How much? Wouldn't PostgreSQL be closer to a (normal) deployment db? Wouldn't MDSE allow you develop code closer to that which will (usually) be deployed? I don't see Oracle as a standard development db, other than for testing before final deployment. Since I won't have baggage, I probably can avoid back versions of CF and IDE tools (Studio). All my clients are deployed on CF 5. I think that JEdit will be my choice for an editor. Lots of good info thanks Dick On Tuesday, September 10, 2002, at 12:42 PM, Matt Robertson wrote: I personally have stuck with Win2k and have been very pleased. --- Matt Robertson[EMAIL PROTECTED] MSB Designs, Inc., www.mysecretbase.com --- __ Structure your ColdFusion code with Fusebox.
