Stus-List Olde Stuck Seacock

2019-01-01 Thread robert via CnC-List

Eric:

I have a 1984 C 32 sea cocks are Marelon so I don't have the
problem of them seizing up...every haul out I spray the ball with
lithium grease and close and open a few timesmy seacocks are open
all the time.

Try mixing a solution of 50% acetone - 50% automatic transmission fluid
and apply that to your seized seacockuse a Q Tip to apply the
solution.don't get it on the hull or don't leave it there.this
solution is the best I have used for seized metals.

My cockpit scupper hoses are crossed, as they should be when the thru
hulls are below the waterline lineno water back up into the cockpit
on a same tack unless your thru hull(s) is in a different position(s)
than mine.

That's a grease cup on your rudder tubeif it works, you unscrew the
cup, fill it with grease, screw back on and twist tight to force the
grease into the shaft.have someone turn your wheel from side to side
to draw in the grease and turn again and again.you will get to a
point where it doesn't want any more grease .

If the cup is too badly corroded, leave it tap and drill a new fitting
to screw a grease gun to the shaft tube .it will work just as good.

I bought earlier this year a C 32.  One issue the surveyor pointed

position.  This boat has spent it's known history in cold salt water
on the west coast of BC.

I'm interested to know if anyone else has had this same type of
seacock, and had success freeing it up.

The starboard side one is only barely accessible through the 12"x 12"
panel in the aft end of the quarter-birth.  If it was reasonably
accessible, I'd just replace it, but to get 2 hands on it I'd probably
have to go through the locker and remove the fuel tank.

The other pic is a fitting on the rudder tube.  I assume this is
(well, was) a grease cup.  Has anyone taken one of these on?

Yes that was her because I was on board Silent Partner when I had my C 41 in
the Caribbean in the fall/winter of 2004/2005. I forget the owner’s name,
really nice guy, he and his wife were running charters with the boat then, my
wife was impressed as they had a washer and dryer on board

I am also under the impression that the fire destroyed some of the deck molds
and that’s why these three boats in question have the stepped transom as
opposed to the fold out ladder transom. It also looks like the forward hatch
is not recessed into the fore deck like the earlier boats and just sits on top
and possibly a little further aft but it’s a little hard to tell from pictures.
Didn’t South Shore also have a 37 XL for sale a couple years ago that must
have been a late model as I think it had the stepped transom as well.

I was there about a year after the fire and they were trying to sell a 37

Happy New year to all C folks, from
Ontario Canada.
Have just re joined the list, to help with
the cabin fever this Winter.
Great to read about things sailing at this
time of year when ice & snow cover the land.
Our boat is a 1978 34, that we've been
enjoying for a little over 30 years now on Lake Ontario.
No major problems EVER, not even
paint, just regular maintenance.
We've kept her simple, pretty much as per
original, no big "upgrades" to date.
My pre-launch list this year includes a
new hose for the stuffing box, a new Cutlass bearing, and an engine
re-alignment.Pretty regular stuff. I pulled the prop shaft at haulout. had it
checked at a machine shop, and it's perfectly true.
Also looking for a good used cruising
main..wondering if any of you might have a recently retired sail you'd be
willing to part with for a reasonable price?
Cheers,
Bill.___

Re: Stus-List Powder coating steering pedestal - pitfalls?

2019-01-01 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
Thanks, folks.

First, Chuck. Your comment on the bearings being destroyed is exactly the
technical info I was looking for.

Bill, Rob - I hear you. When I first bought Touche' I wire brushed and
sanded parts of the pedestal then painted those areas with white Rustoleum
(or Krylon). That has held up well for many years.

Your comments, combined with Chuck's info on the shaft removal is
"steering" me towards painting it again. Sounds like the safer route.
It's certainly the easier route.

The pedestal stays under a Sunbrella cover when not in use so the paint
should hold up well.

Stus-List Powder coating steering pedestal - pitfalls?

2019-01-01 Thread robert via CnC-List
I did something similar about 8 years agomy pedestal paint was
fadedbought a rustoleum flat paint and applied two coats.never
used a primerit still looks good after 8 seasons in the weather and
with the 'flat finish' it is hard to tell the difference between 'powder
coating'.

5 years ago my pedestal was looking rough.  I decided to paint it.
Removed what I could easily, taped off what I couldn't, mask off the
cockpit with plastic to catch overspray, sanded lightly.
Used a rustoleum primer, then three light coats of rustoleum semi
gloss.  My pedestal was black originally, so kept with that.
5 years later it still looks great...I can't imagine the issues I
would have faced to pull the pedestalbut I would paint again if it
needed it.

Are you sure you need to powder coat?

I have a 1981 36-1 centerboard. There is nothing in the boat's manual about
the centerboard version. Does anyone have any details about the board
lifting mechanism, the weight of the board, recommended maintenance, or how
to inspect any of the moving parts?

Happy New Year Dennis!  Where to start?  First, good luck finding ANY
replacement Morch bits.  I can’t recall if Morch used sleeves or needle
bearings to support the wheel shaft but I know Edson bearings get destroyed
when to drive out the wheel shaft and need to be replaced.  Even if you can
find or build new pedestal parts, to properly replace powder coating, the
pedestal will need to be media blasted to bare metal and then acid washed to
make sure the new coating adheres properly.

With regards to your engine controller, the throttle and shift shafts remove by
taking out a Phillips head screw that retains the shaft in place in the
casting.  Once they are removed, you can slide out the shaft as well as
removing and replacing the two delrin bushings that serve as shaft bushings.

Just curious, but does the Morch pedestal have mounting bolts that measure 9
1/2” center to center?  If yes, why not save hours and hours of labor and just
buy a new or lightly used(see hurricane damaged boat) Edson unit with a through
shaft wheel brake and a nice shiny finish?  You might also need to buy new
aluminum pedestal mounting bolts, but everything else should line up.

Give me a shout if you care to discuss options outside of what’s been discussed.

OK, Touche' is back in Louisiana from Florida for a couple months for new
canvas and some long deferred maintenance.  Having the boat 1 hour away rather
than 4 hours lets me do some major work.

One of the tasks on the list is a complete maintenance process on the steering
system.  As part of that I am exploring having the pedestal re-powdercoated.
Going to be a pain to remove all the instrument cables and engine controls,
etc. and strip the pedestal.

I think I'm good on removing the pedestal and the idler sheave plate below the
deck.  I've been in the pedestal a couple times when I moved the engine
controls from the cockpit bulkhead to the pedestal using an Edson engine
control assembly.  I've also pulled a pedestal on a C 29 MK II.

I might ask advice if I encounter issues but have some pre-task questions now
just for planning.

Question 1.  I suspect that powder coating will require me to remove the
steering wheel shaft and provide a stripped pedestal to them.  Not sure how the
wheel shaft is installed or how the sprocket is attached to the shaft.  Edson's
maintenance document (https://edsonmarine.com/content/EB381SteeringGuide.pdf)
shows a drive pin and some needle bearings.  Touche's pedestal is a Morch.  It
is NOT an Edson or Yachting Specialties pedestal.  Does anybody know if a Morch
pedestal is the same?

Second question bothering me is the bearing surfaces are on the pedestal where
the needle bearing (if any) are?  Will this be a problem for the powder
coaters?  I suspect they will have a technique for protecting the surface from
excess powder coat.

Question 3.  The Edson engine control assembly (#870) is also corroding.  I may
have it powder coated also.  How hard is it to remove the control levers to
strip the assembly?  Chuck?

Thanks,

Dennis C.
