Hi all, I just bought Halcyon from Jamestown dist. It is also water based and is supposed to have less smell. I am going to try it to refresh the interior of our 40-2. We had the same(?) problem with our 40-2. The wheel was getting harder and harder to turn. It would almost lock up on us and had to be forced to start turning. We dropped the rudder and noticed some crusty crud on it and inside the nrudder tube. I was able to get a small cylinder hone and ran it up and down a couple time slowly on my 18v drill. Put it back together with green grease and it worked like new. Wheel pilot works much easier. Ted. Ten-Ten '81 40-2 Punta Gorda, Fl. [C 34] Hi Andrew, I have a 1981 C so not certain if we have the same rudder shaft arrangement, but I'll explain what I have and you can have a look at yours. A friend has a 1981 C and his setup is the same. Crawl back below the cockpit to the rudder shaft and look for a grease cup on the rudder shaft housing. The cup is about midway up the shaft housing facing forward. It looks like a 1" diameter metal, screwed on cap about an inch tall (tall measuring horizontal). Get yourself some good, waterproof, grease (the local marina recommended "Green Grease" but was out. I stopped at WM and got some "Corrosion Block, Waterproof Grease". It's blue. Dig out whatever old grease you can from the grease cup and refill with fresh grease. Screw the grease cup all the way back on. Then repeat -- remove the grease cup, fill with fresh grease (no need to clean out because there will be a small amount of fresh grease from the previous cycle). Repeat. Eventually you will see the old grease comming out the top of the rudder shaft housing. If the boat is in the water, you can see the top of the rudder and watch for fresh grease coming out. I did this about 20 times before much old grease started to move -- really old, brown, hard grease. The PO of my boat did not understand that the fill, screw on, remove, fill, screw on .. had to be repeated many times. He filled the cup once, turned it on, and thought that was it! PO used to brag how balanced the boat was as he let go of the wheel and the boat continued on -- fact was the steering was so stiff it took a lot to move the rudder. Now I can steer with one finger after putting nearly an entire tube of grease in. You will find that crawling back to access the grease cup isn't a picnic. The C owner installed a Zerc fitting right on the grease cup and ran a 3ft hose forward. I did the same. Now we can attach a grease gun to the easily accessible hose and lube the rudder shaft. Once a year ought to do it. Good luck! Stus-List Fw: Failure Notice
Hi folks, We've pretty much decided we'd like a smaller table in the cabin. The big fold down just takes up too much floor space. Anybody replace theirs? I've been looking for affordable fold downs or fold ups to attach to the keel cable tube. The ones I'm finding cost way too much or just look like pedestal tables. Any pics would be nice. Stus-List Re: A lesson on the vagaries of a hurricane
I guess that's why the NHC puts out all those adviseries and cone of uncertainty. We've lived in SW Fl for too many years and been through a few of those " won't come here" scenerios. Hurricane Charley being one of them. We learned a long time ago that's it's a lot cheaper and less stressful if you just prepare. Charley was headed to Tampa but made that unexpected turn and nail our little city flat. All except our house and our boat. Not bragging, but we knew what could happen. We had very little damage cause we had prepped. I can only say sorry to hear about your damage and hope it's not too bad. I'm sure you will prep more next time. TedS/V TenTen '81. 40'Punta Gorda Fl. Early report from a pier neighbor is Touche' is "okay". Torn headsail and maybe some canvas damage. Touche's slip is on a Category 3 rated floating pier. I will head to the boat as soon as I can to assess any damage. Local authorities may be barring entry to non-residents, I don't know yet. Which brings me to the "vagaries" thing. I drove home from a week in the Smokies and spent Sunday night on Touche'. I looked at all the models Monday morning which said Sally was going to Louisiana or Mississippi. I did some moderate storm preparations and drove home to Louisiana to secure my house. This storm took one of the most surprising turns I've ever seen. Up until about 24-36 hours prior to landfall, the models were still forecasting a landfall along the Mississippi coast. Then it slowed down and shifted dramatically east. My lesson from this is if there is the slightest chance of a direct or near hit, do a FULL storm preparation. Had I done that, I might have had no or very little damage. The tall ship La Nina, a replica of Columbus' ship, was docked in Palafox Pier Marina in downtown Pensacola. That marina was essentially destroyed. There's another storm developing in the Bay of Campeche. Early model runs point it at Louisiana. Dang.
