Hi all, I just bought Halcyon from Jamestown dist. It is also water based and
is supposed to have less smell. I am going to try it to refresh the interior of
our 40-2.  I wonder if it is actually the same product as Gen. Fin. just
rebranded.  Ted

It holds well for about 4 years (so far), without any signs of wear. Mind you,

Of course, ymwv, as I don't have a clue how this may work in a marine

Thanks, Danny.  I have used Awlwood before with mixed results.  It worked great
on my dorade boxes and has held up for years.  My cockpit coaming, not so much
-- for some reason the primer did not adhere well.  I suspect it’s the natural
oil in teak but do not know for sure.

I've switched to awlwood.  It does not have the same yellowing tendency as
varnish and it looks really great!   You can hot coat it after the primer is
cured.  It is very expensive, however.

We will admit that our first aid kits on board are extensive.  Mostly because
you never know if you or a fellow cruiser will need your help.  We sail the
west coast of Florida. My suggestion is to put in a triangle bandage, gauze &
tape (but blue tape or duck tape works too hold on gauze) and eye wash kit. We
carry a sm suture kit just in case & plenty of Capt Morgan to deaden the pain.
I know I have a suggested list somewhere and will hopefully find it and pay. We
have our kids in everything from an toolboxes to medical bags.

Concerning inland and coastal sailing, it made me wonder what should be
in a marine FAK? From my limited experience, I'd say the items that it
should cover are (to start):

Fingers getting smashed/pinched (band-aids)
Rope burns
Cuts/scrapes
Headache/nausea
Dehydration
Exposure (heat related)
Sun protection (sunscreen)

Any thoughts?

We had the same(?) problem with our 40-2. The wheel was getting harder and
harder to turn. It would almost lock up on us and had to be forced to start
turning. We dropped the rudder and noticed some crusty crud on it and inside
the nrudder tube. I was able to get a small cylinder hone and ran it up and
down a couple time slowly on my 18v drill. Put it back together with green
grease and it worked like new. Wheel pilot works much easier.

Hi Andrew,

I have a 1981 C so not certain if we have the same rudder shaft
arrangement, but I'll explain what I have and you can have a look at yours.  A
friend has a 1981 C and his setup is the same.

Crawl back below the cockpit to the rudder shaft and look for a grease cup on
the rudder shaft housing.  The cup is about midway up the shaft housing facing
forward.  It looks like a 1" diameter metal, screwed on cap about an inch tall
(tall measuring horizontal).  Get yourself some good, waterproof, grease (the
local marina recommended "Green Grease" but was out.  I stopped at WM and got
some "Corrosion Block, Waterproof Grease".  It's blue.  Dig out whatever old
grease you can from the grease cup and refill with fresh grease.  Screw the
grease cup all the way back on.  Then repeat -- remove the grease cup, fill
with fresh grease (no need to clean out because there will be a small amount of
fresh grease from the previous cycle).  Repeat.  Eventually you will see the
old grease comming out the top of the rudder shaft housing.  If the boat is in
the water, you can see the top of the rudder and watch for fresh grease coming
out.  I did this about 20 times before much old grease started to move --
really old, brown, hard grease.

The PO of my boat did not understand that the fill, screw on, remove, fill,
screw on .. had to be repeated many times.  He filled the cup once, turned
it on, and thought that was it!  PO used to brag how balanced the boat was as
he let go of the wheel and the boat continued on -- fact was the steering was
so stiff it took a lot to move the rudder.  Now I can steer with one finger
after putting nearly an entire tube of grease in.

You will find that crawling back to access the grease cup isn't a picnic.  The
C owner installed a Zerc fitting right on the grease cup and ran a 3ft hose
forward.  I did the same.  Now we can attach a grease gun to the easily
accessible hose and lube the rudder shaft.  Once a year ought to do it.  Good
luck!

When we bought our 1978 C 34 it had a nice smooth rudder action via our wheel

she was donated  to our local sailing center. There was no paperwork other than
the owners manual with her and a receipt for batteries.  There is an indication
that she was in the NE area possibly New Jersey. Any information on her that we
can get would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you-. Relinda

Bill,
IMO — There are not many TVs and DVD players that can really hold up to marine
weather unless you are running dehumidifiers all the time. Also, those digital
antennas will get you some stations, but not a whole lot.
Suggest you look into an iPad or other big tablet — there are mounts galore on
Amazon for mounting in the cabin, you can watch or stream movies off the
internet, and you’ll have another device for navigation, internet, and, in some
cases, a repeater/control for your marine electronics.
We use my iPad air to watch movies and TV (My cable service at home comes with
free streaming so I can watch anything on the iPad that I can at home,
including off the home DVR) and I put magnetic mounts in the main saloon and in
the aft cabin over the bed.
On our last cruise, we had a beautiful night, sat out in the cockpit and
watched (big surprise) 2009’s "Star Trek”.

Us, being in Florida, don't have much say in that. But our friends who moved to

cold. I don't know how long it takes to winterize your boat, but if it takes
longer than the short weather forecast that gives a cold front dropping down on

We've pretty much decided we'd like a smaller table in the cabin. The big fold

looking for affordable fold downs or fold ups to attach to the keel cable tube.
The ones I'm finding cost way too much or just look like pedestal tables.  Any

nail our little city flat. All except our house and our boat. Not bragging, but
we knew what could happen. We had very little damage cause we had prepped. I
can only say sorry to hear about your damage and hope it's not too bad. I'm
sure you will prep more next time. TedS/V TenTen  '81. 40'Punta Gorda Fl.

of you know, Touche' is in Pensacola near the landfall of Hurricane Sally.
Early report from a pier neighbor is Touche' is "okay".  Torn headsail and
maybe some canvas damage.  Touche's slip is on a Category 3 rated floating
pier.   I will head to the boat as soon as I can to assess any damage.  Local
authorities may be barring entry to non-residents, I don't know yet.
Which brings me to the "vagaries" thing.  I drove home from a week in the
Smokies and spent Sunday night on Touche'.  I looked at all the models Monday
morning which said Sally was going to Louisiana or Mississippi.  I did some
moderate storm preparations and drove home to Louisiana to secure my house.
This storm took one of the most surprising turns I've ever seen.  Up until
about 24-36 hours prior to landfall, the models were still forecasting a
landfall along the Mississippi coast.  Then it slowed down and shifted
dramatically east.
My lesson from this is if there is the slightest chance of a direct or near
hit, do a FULL storm preparation.  Had I done that, I might have had no or very
little damage.
The tall ship La Nina, a replica of Columbus' ship, was docked in Palafox Pier
Marina in downtown Pensacola.  That marina was essentially destroyed.
There's another storm developing in the Bay of Campeche.  Early model runs
point it at Louisiana.  Dang.
More as I hear it.

I  found the easiest way to fill the racor ,and prime the injectors if needed,
is a hand squeeze primer bulb. I put it in the fuel line before the filter. I
can change the filter and just fill it back up bleeding the air out on top.

I love reading the ads on Yachtworld and the engines listed on a couple
had me wondering. A C 40 with a 50 hp Westerbeke and a Landfall 38
with a 40 HP Westerbeke both seemed unusual. Did C swap around various
engines during the model runs or was this a custom order or ???

Coquina

C 35 MK I - still the original engine model, if not the original engine

The first 40 I was on in 1980 had a VW Pathfinder diesel. I know some had
Westerbeasts and mine had a Yanmar.

I've wondered the same thing.  My 84 Landfall 35 has a Westerbeke 33, which I
suppose is original??

I've got a Westerbeke 33 with a 2 blade folding prop.
I would say I do 7 knots at about 2700 -2800 rpm pretty consistently.
