2023-10-28 Thread Bill Coleman via CnC-List
As Matt mentioned, after a couple boats blew over at our club, they came
out with an edict that any boats with masts up will have to be on a
cradle. That is not to say that a boat can't blow over in a cradle, there
are tons of poorly designed cradles, or poorly maintained cradles around.
I have made several over the years, and just this fall got roped into
revamping a Catalina 36 cradle. He gave me the original drawings for the
cradle, I couldn't believe it was an original design by Catalina - the
whole thing, even the longitudinal stringers were only 4" channel, which,
after being picked up by the ends, which is how they move cradles here, it
sagged down about 6". So it got two new 8" I beams longitudinally and two
crosswise under the keel. I would have made it more than 8 feet wide, but
the dockmaster told me it couldn't be more than that. The point here, I
guess is to get a good cradle. There are a few down at our club that are
an amazing design. They are made by Viking Trailers, in Butler, PA,
Unfortunately , they don't have any pictures on their site of them, if
anyone is interested I can send a picture. There are four uprights per
side, all adjustable in, out, and up, and also have fold down flaps to
stabilize it up to 12' wide. Really well thought out.

I leave my mast up here in Marina Seca San carlos for the summer. There's
probably 200+ stored here. All on jack stands, hard pan, and wood blocks
under the keel. I remove sails, canvas, lines, and cover the boat with a
sunshade. I worry more about UV damage than the occasional 70kt winds.

With mast down possibly the reduced windage would have prevented the boat from

Agree, our yards always use plywood pads, but 1/2" plywood seems too thin, too
weak and I always find pads with the leg penetrating several wood layers, or
through and many pads are reused while the show cracks through several layers.
I'd rather supply solid 3/4" pads for my stands and end the worry and avoid any
drama.

Placement of jackstand legs on plywood pieces is mandatory at my Club.

One problem with jackstands is settling. The legs dig a hole in the ground.

Many boatyards don't check their stands after they block the boat.

When my boat is on the hard, I make it a point to visit the boat regularly and
tighten up the jackscrews, before climbing aboard. I usually find that one or
two need tighening, but it is important to not overdo it. The keel is supposed
to support 90% of the boat weight and the jackstands carry only 10%.
Brownell has a few videos that explain how their jackstands should be placed
and how the chain is tensioned. https://boatstands.com/proper-use/
<https://linkprotect.cudasvc.com/url?a=https%3a%2f%2fboatstands.com%2fproper-use%2f=E,1,fRaOFpS31u_-NGuJYMC2SSmgXI3zUxO5oAgkFoVRM6wTHXFYm3zvWLhAjYr6R2-E_X_W8vLpa5xpGtJY20fL0veGM5mzL2bMgJjq_v-9GcYPDQ,,=1_add=1>

I occasionally check the boats around me to be assured they are safe. If I
find they need adjusting, I ask the yard workers to check them. They usually
thank me, and if the manager is decent, he will have his guys check all the
stands across the yard.

In my area, the boatyards are mostly gravel or loose stone and the legs of the
typical jackstand are placed onto 4" plywood squares cut from 1/2" plywood. I
made a set of pads for my boat's stands from 3/4" plywood and cut them 6"
square to spread the load better.

Boatyards don't allow owners to move stands, so any stand work has to be done
discreetly, and quietly.

A related consideration is how the cradle is constructed. I modified my cradle
by having two pieces of steel beam welded to the cradle on each side of the
keel. The steel pieces were modified to hold pads which push against the sides
of the keel to prevent keel movement. I did this because – according to yard
personnel -- when a sailboat is pushed off a cradle due to high winds, the
movement usually starts at the base of the keel.

Tipping is one of the main reasons I store mast down. Mast presents a lot of
windage in cold winter storms. Puts a lot of pressure on small area of poppet
that actually contacts the hull. To experience how much just stick your arm
out the window of a car going 60!! Use steel cradle purpose built for the
boat. Yard adds one extra stand port and starboard. No problems in 25 years.

And for loosening the rigging in winterno need if the rig is properly tuned

Good question. Should you loosen the rig for winter storage?
I've been advised to leave the rig tension alone unless you cranked it up to
banjo tight and can play tunes on it. If you tensioned the rig for racing, you
might want to remove any excessive tension, a turn, but unless it's bar tight,
live it alone. The reason given is that the aluminum mast will shrink more
than the stainless rod during the colder temperatures.

I've been wintering with Safe harbor for about 5 years. They never mention the
benefits to me until I asked this past season... I'm waiting to hear back from
the yard that stored for 3 winters and one summer (during covid, no launch)

Maybe a minor thread steal here but..
We keep Hideaway in a Safe Harbor in Stamford. We winter with safe harbor as
well. Benefit-12 free nights at other Safe Harbors if you winter with them.
Sometimes a shuttle bus, pool and a restaurant are a good thing.

2022-09-20 Thread Todd Williams via CnC-List
Is the lack of availability because of the Mattapoisett Boat Yard fire a
couple weeks ago? (I saw it on Boneheader Boaters of the Week, a great
YouTube channel!)

I moved to southern Maine this summer and there are no slips or moorings.
Most places estimate a 2 year waiting list. Portland Yacht Club is over 7
years wait, estimated. My C is still back in Sodus, NY. At least here
for winter storage it is common to just plop the boat down in your own
driveway. Using not-too-rusty jackstands, of course.

Did you try Concordia in S. Dartmouth? Not cheap and they don’t allow much

They've damaged my boat several times in their
handling and I've done a massive amount of
cosmetic work over the last couple of years that
I'd like to protect.

  I've also just completely rehabbed
the mast. So, dropping it seems like a waste of
effort and cost right now. So, I'd like to find
a mast up solution if possible.

Thanks for any insights anyone can
offer!

As always, avoid Borden Light Marine in Fall River. Worst yard I've

My info might be a bit old but when I bought my boat it had been in
Somerset Marina for 3 yrs on the hard.  It was marginal for a 35'
sailboat, could only launch at high tide, had to bring in an outside
crane to hoist a mast more than 50'.  On the other hand it was a good
place for DIY, they didn't care what you did on the boat.  The yard crew
was good, the owner bit of a crank.  Use with caution, I guess.

Close to the house!

I was also considering somerset marina on the Taunton River.  Any
thoughts on that facility?

Hello all,
Was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for winter
storage somewhere around Buzzards Bay. Narragansett bay is
an option too.

The yard I was using needs to drop the mast and they can
be a little clumsy. They've damaged my boat several times
