[cobirds] RMBO Chatfield Banding Station

2011-04-25 Thread Meredith McBurney
Hi CoBirders,

Today was opening day at the Chatfield Banding Station and we had a pretty
typical late April day. We caught 9 birds in the banding station nets, 8 new,
plus a return Song Sparrow that was banded in 2007 and has been a regular
visitor ever since. We are trying to get a handle on the Nature Center/feeder
birds, so we caught some birds there as well - 11 White-crowned Sparrows, a
return Downy from last year and a White-breasted Nuthatch banded in 2007.
(Both the Downy and the Nuthatch were originally banded in a station net, not
at the feeder area.)

So, here are the totals:

Downy Woodpecker 1 return, banded 2010
White-breasted Nuthatch 1 return, banded 2007
Hermit Thrush 1
Virginia's Warbler 1
Myrtle Warbler 4
Spotted Towhee 1
Song Sparrow 1 new, 1 return, banded 2007 (probable pair; caught in same net;
male in breeding condition)
Gambel's White-crowned Sparrow 11

We will be open every day except May 20-21, weather permitting, through
Memorial Day. Look forward to seeing many of you!

[cobirds] Owls at CBR

2011-04-25 Thread Steven Brown
Hi COBIrders,

During a successful first day today of RMBO banding at Chico Basin Ranch, Bill
Maynard found a Long-eared Owl in the Russian Olives at the west end banding
station grove. We re-found it about 130 pm, along with 2 Barn Owls in the same
area.

34 banded birds today! Many Audubon's and Myrtle Yellow-rumped Warblers, an
Orange-crowned Warbler, several Ruby-crowned Kinglets, also 2 Am. Robins and 1
Dark-eyed Junco banded in previous seasons - dates to be determined.

Good birding,

[cobirds] Easter Birding (4/24), El Paso County (Caspian Tern)

2011-04-25 Thread Kara Carragher

Hello CObirders,

Easter Sunday was a very birdy day!  My husband Dan and I ran into many birders
(Bill Maynard, Dan Maynard, John Maynard, and Mark Peterson) while birding El
Paso County.  The main highlight was a Caspian Tern that flew over Big Johnson
Reservoir and flew away (this is probably the same bird found first by Bill
Maynard on Saturday 4/23 at Prospect Lake, Colorado Springs).  The tern
was seen later in the afternoon again at Prospect Lake by Bill Maynard.  This
bird did not stay long at each location...a few minutes at most.

Here is the quick Easter (4/24) summary for all the birds observed by myself
and others, sorry for the tardiness of the post.  Hopefully I did not forget
anything.

Big Johnson Reservoir

- Caspian Tern- lots of grebes (5 species), dabbling ducks, and mergansers, etc.
- Common Loon
- White-faced Ibis
- American Avocet
- Marbled Godwit
- Wilson's Phalarope
- Willet (over 50)
- Bonaparte's Gull
- Franklin's Gull
- Baird's Sandpiper
- American White Pelican (2 large flocks flew over, but never landed)
- Snowy Egret
- Great Egret
- Bald Eagle
- Swallows (lots!!!)
- Yellow-headed Blackbird (~200 feeding in the farmer's fields below the dam)

Private Pond in Fountain/Widefield
- American Avocet
- Black-necked Stilt
- Solitary Sandpiper
- Least Sandpiper
- Baird's Sandpiper
- Semipalmated Sandpiper
- Greater Yellowlegs
- Lesser Yellowlegs
- Long-billed Dowitcher
- Stilt Sandpiper

Prospect Lake

- Caspian Tern
- Wilson's Phalarope
- Forster's Tern
- Osprey

Good birding,

[cobirds] Continuing birds at Cherry Creek SP this afternoon

2011-04-25 Thread Cheryl Teuton
Not as great of numbers, but continuing variety of shorebirds this afternoon
at Cherry Creek. At the observation deck area off of the prairie loop,
there were still Semipalmated Plovers, Western and Semipalmated sandpipers,
a Sanderling, a large number of Wilson's phalaropes, Avocets, Willets,
Marbled Godwits, both yellowlegs, and Long-billed Dowitchers. The Caspian
tern was on the spit at the marina at about 6PM, keeping company with
gulls, Pelicans, Double crested corms and the ongoing Neotropical Corm, but
when we were leaving at about 7PM, a last look in the Southeast corner
showed that the tern had popped up with the gathering gulls there. Thanks
to Glenn and Loch for reporting this embarrassment of migration riches!

Re: [cobirds] Yellow-throated Warbler, Boulder

2011-04-25 Thread migrant44
Refound, 11:00, this time north of the volleyball net where it was
first reported. I had spent almost three hours searching for the bird
Saturday (right after it was refound by Waltman, Kaempfer, and
apparently most of the rest the of Boulder County birder population)
without success. I must admit that I had developed a fairly intense
case of bitterness and resentment toward the bird. So, this morning,
armed with good binoculars and a bad attitude, I set off track down the
uncooperative little @#$%!. Fortunately, I was not otherwised armed,
or we both might have been in trouble (the bird and I, that is!). I
immediately encountered Alec Brown on the trail, who in turn spotted
the bird and pointed it out to me. Took about five minutes. So to
date, it's Norm 1, warbler 1. Better than the Nuggets, anyway. There
was also a nice red-naped sapsucker working the trees around the area
where David reported the warbler earlier.

A walk a mile to the west (Warbler Woods) produced surprisingly little,
except one very cooperative and handsome (beautiful? Not sure of the
sex) Cooper's hawk.

A quick stop at Mesa Trailhead wasn't much better- a couple of
butterbutts and a FOY ruby-crowned kinglet. Doudey Draw was really
dead- the thicket on the west side of the trail and the two migrant
traps had nothing at all.

Norm Lewis
avenged against the warbler!

[cobirds] central weld county

2011-04-25 Thread j.d. birchmeier
In pursuit of shorebirds and after checking a few local places in Boulder
County
(nuttin...) I wended northwards.

Lower Latham: irrigation on and water flowing, the marsh is filling up and
the
mudflats are ready, but only a half dozen short-billed dowitchers (looking good
in the fresh feathers), a single willet, and then a flock of 20 or so Least
Sandpipers flew in, doing that "Every body turn left.NOW" thingie.

Crow Valley: White-Crowned Sparrows, Yellow Rumped Warblers (Myrtle's this
time)
and a ton of Robins and A Goldfinches.

West on Hwy 14, about one Lincoln's Sparrow every 20 feet until I hit the burn
area.

[cobirds] Boulder Co. Chestnut-collared Longspur is re-findable

2011-04-25 Thread Christian Nunes

Hi Birders,

I reported a CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPUR near Mesa Reservoir last week. That
observation was of a bird flying over, and I had little hope that it was
actually sticking around. But today I was in the same general vicinity and I
flushed a/the CCLO from the side of the two-track that goes west from the end
of Kelso Drive. From 51st St., turn W onto Kelso Dr and go all the way down to
the Open Space gate. From here walk about 1/2 mile west. The two-track goes
down a little dip, then up onto a flat plateau where the road straightens out.
The bird was around here. There's a social/cattle trail that goes off to the
north, and that might be worth walking. Otherwise just walk along the two-track
and cross your fingers. Being familiar with CCLO flight calls will help (a
liquid piddy-dip, not a rattle like the others). There's a Burrowing Owl
closure out at the end of the two-track, so please respect that. Go ahead and
look for owls, but I haven't seen any there, yet. A few SAGE THRASHERS and
LOGGERHEAD SHRIKES are around.

Cheers,

on the first road. You will then be in Bent County. The mature trees at Tempel
Grove will loom up in front of you. The bird was still there on 4/21, but very
shy. The bird stuck around even after most of its favored feeding sites were
flooded by a sudden, large influx of water into the canal. The Tempel Ranch
property is off limits, but you may walk on the path along the canal. As

of warblers in that general area.

-- A YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER was found by Gent, & reported by Schmoker on April
22 & seen again on the 23rd. It was above the Boulder Creek Path near the

Observation end time: 14:00:00
Total observation time: 7 hours

Official Counter:Joyce Commercon

Observers:Bill Wuerthele, Cyndy Johnson, Cynthia Madsen,
  Francis Commercon

Visitors:
We had several hikers who passed through. One gentleman was curious about a
couple of large dark birds he had seen near the ridge. Per his
description, the birds were likely Turkey Vultures.

Weather:
Sky was 100% overcast all day. Day started out hazy; tops of Green Mt and
Mt Morrison were obscured. Visibility improved throughout the day,
especially to the East. Heavy clouds West of Mt. Morrison and Westridge all
day, although we could finally see Mt Morrison Towers by noon. Temperature
was 1.5 °C but rose to 6 °C by afternoon. A snow shower hit us around
12:30 pm. The wind was light and from the north and northeast.

Raptor Observations:
At 11:55 am MST, we had a beautiful Adult Broad-winged Hawk fly directly
over the ridge, (height of flight 1), but it was heading SOUTH, so we did
not count it as a migrant. We did not see it again. We also saw a
Red-tail, a Sharp-shinned Hawk and a Golden Eagle that were determined to
be locals by behavior. Seven local Turkey Vultures rose south along the
ridge in a kettle near 1:00 pm and headed west behind Mt. Morrison

Non-raptor Observations:
We saw several Western Bluebirds, three Northern Flickers, the local Rock
Wren, an American Robin, Common Ravens, Black-capped and Mountain
Chickadees and a Townsend's Solitaire. We heard Spotted Towhees and Western
Meadowlarks on both sides of the ridge. Early in the morning, six Rock
Pigeons were seen heading north and a few hours later six Mourning Doves
were also seen flying north. Mule deer were seen on the West side of the
ridge below us. A group of Elk were spotted on the West side of the ridge
up the valley somewhat East of Cabrini Shrine.

Report submitted by Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory (jeff.bi...@rmbo.org)
Dinosaur Ridge information may be found at:
http://www.rmbo.org/

Site Description:
Dinosaur Ridge is the only regularly staffed hawkwatch in Colorado and is
the best place in the world to see migrating Ferruginous Hawks. Dinosaur
Ridge may be the best place in the country to see the rare dark morph of
the Broad-winged Hawk (a few are seen each spring). Hawkwatchers who linger
long enough may see resident Golden Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks and Prairie
Falcons, in addition to migrating Swainson's, Cooper's and Sharp-shinned
Hawks, American Kestrels and Turkey Vultures. Peregrine Falcons and
Ferruginous Hawks are uncommon; Northern Goshawk is rare but regular.
Non-raptor species include Rock Wren, and sometimes Bushtit, Western
Bluebird, Sandhill Crane, White-throated Swift, American White Pelican or
Dusky Grouse. Birders are always welcome.
The hawkwatch is generally staffed by volunteers from the Rocky Mountain
Bird Observatory from about 9 AM to around 4 PM from the first week of
March to the first week of May

[cobirds] Caspian Tern, Cherry Creek State Park

2011-04-25 Thread Glenn Walbek
This morning Bob Brown and I got word of a possible Caspian Tern at the east
end of Cherry Creek. A few minutes later, the Caspian Tern landed on the
sandbar in the east cove. In addition to the tern, 15 species of shorebirds
were seen between yesterday and today. The park is very birdy!

[cobirds] RE: CORRECTION - Manitou Lake - Teller Co - 4 new FOS and 1 new location bird

2011-04-25 Thread Jeff J Jones
After getting home and downloading the pics, the western sandpiper legs no
longer looked as black as I had remembered and there was no indication of
webbing between the toes on a couple pics that happen to capture the feet in
fair detail. I asked a few folks to review and the answer seems to be least
sandpiper instead. Those legs sure looked black at 7am this morning. Good
thing I took pictures. It is still a first for me at Manitou Lake.

Subject: Manitou Lake - Teller Co - 4 new FOS and 1 new location bird

Cold, overcast and snow/sleet/ice overnight. Still sort of that way this
morning at 7am.

New bird for me for Manitou Lake was Western Sandpiper. Got good pics. The
lesser yellowlegs was still there. But no solitary sandpiper. Spotted
Sandpipers seem a bit late; haven't seen my first yet at the lake.

3 FOS are: Canvasback, Eurasian Collared-Dove, and Savannah Sparrow. 39
species in all.

White-faced Ibis (~4) continue in the marsh and around the lake. Holding out
hopes for a first breeding record. Seems to be the same group there for a
while now. Unusual.

Up to 142 species for the lake lifetime (~23 years) and 62 so far this year.
I really haven't birded the surrounding woodlands or stream yet as they are
more productive starting in mid-May.

[cobirds] Semipalmated Sandpiper, Lake County spring migrants

2011-04-25 Thread Tim Kalbach
Lake County 4-24-2011. More spring snows & more interesting high
elevation birds! I finally got down to check Twin Lakes late Sunday
and found the following:

15 Great Blue Herons (unprecedented high count), a pair of Hooded
Mergansers (very uncommon here); 175+ Franklin’s Gulls, 5 Ring-billed
Gulls, 4 Long-billed Dowitchers, 2 Semipalmated Plovers, 2 Least
Sandpipers, and a shifting, splitting, re-combining flock of peeps
including about 30 birds, most of which were Semipalmated Sandpipers
with a couple standout Western Sandpipers. I suspect Semi Sands are
rather infrequent here in the central Rockies. I’m familiar with all
the peeps and had good direct comparison with Western and Least. Size
and shape alone ruled out Baird’s or White-rumped.

Crystal Lakes also had 43 Ring-billed Gulls, more than I’ve seen
previously. Weekend total of 86 species is the best I’ve done in
April here, despite almost constant snow and only a few hours spent
birding.

[cobirds] Huerfano County - Saturday 23 Apr 2011

2011-04-25 Thread Yeti Man
On Saturday 4-23-11, we traveled down to Walsenburg to visit my wife's
parents. They live approx. 6 miles west of Walsenburg on Highway 160,
in the Navajo Ranch subdivision. They have five feeders spread out
around the house.
A very busy day at the feeders!

Bluebird, Western
Bushtit
Dove, Eurasian collared
Dove, Mourning
Finch, Cassin's
Finch, House
Goldfinch
Grackle, Common
Grosbeak, Evening - first sightings for my daughter and wife!
Heron, Great blue - fly over on it's way to Lathrop State park.
Junco, Dark eyed
Magpie
Nuthatch, White breasted
Sisken, Pine
Sparrow, Chipping
Sparrow, House
Sparrow, White crowned
Titmouse, Juniper
Vulture, Turkey

Didn't get a chance to go to Lathrop, but if we did, we probably would
have seen all the birds shown in Polly Neldner's cobird entry on
4-23-11.
