[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies Banding Report - Chico Basin Ranch, 10/4/19

2019-10-05 Thread Robert Snowden
Yesterday was the last day of the fall banding season at Chico Basin Ranch.
Not surprisingly, the bird volume was pretty low, as it had been for the
previous few days. But after a chilly first couple hours, the weather was
at least very pleasant to finish things off.

Despite the low number of captures, there were some charismatic birds that
a visiting group of elementary students got to enjoy: a young male
Sharp-shinned Hawk, and an intergrade Northern Flicker which had been
eluding us all season! The flicker appeared mostly Red-shafted, but a few
red feathers in its nape indicated some Yellow-shafted lineage.

The morning's totals were 14 newly-banded birds, 5 recaptures, and 8
species. A summary:

Gray Catbird 2
Hermit Thrush 5 + 3 recaptures
Ruby-crowned Kinglet 2 + 1 recapture
Wilson's Warbler 1 + 1 recapture
Vesper Sparrow 1
Sharp-shinned Hawk 1
Northern Flicker, intergrade 1 (FOS)

And that's a wrap for the fall. Through 29 days of banding we ended up with
742 banded birds, 44 recaptures, and 52 species. That number of banded
birds is markedly lower than any season in the previous decade, and nearly
400 fewer birds than last years' effort. That's not altogether surprising
given the general reports of a slow and/or late migration along the Front
Range, and we were also hindered but some frequent warm and windy mornings.
Also of note were the lack of recaptured birds from previous seasons.

Nevertheless, the data we got will still be very valuable for the Bird
Conservancy of the Rockies' monitoring and conservation efforts going
forward, and there were certainly many highlights from the last few weeks!
Thanks to all those who came out to observe this season, and of course for
the volunteers that helped with our banding efforts.

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies Banding Report - Chico Basin Ranch, 10/3/19

2019-10-03 Thread Robert Snowden
We had a little more activity on the penultimate day of the fall season at
Chico Basin, though once again we had to deal with some suboptimal weather.
The morning started relatively busy before an steady south breeze slowed
things down and resulted in early closures for our most productive nets. We
finished with 22 newly-banded birds and 3 recaptures, but not much variety,
as only 4 species were caught. As with some recent days, there was pretty
good thrush and kinglet representation.

Our summary:

Ruby-crowned Kinglet 7
Wilson's Warbler 1
Dark-eyed Junco, Pink-sided 1
Dark-eyed Junco, Oregon/intergrade 4
Hermit Thrush 9 + 3 recaptures.

Visitors are welcome at our banding stations. Registration is required for
groups. For more information and hours of operation, visit
birdconservancy.org/birdbanding.

Tomorrow (Friday) will be the final day of the season. We'll be opening
nets at 7:00 AM and closing at noon, weather permitting. Come visit!

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies Banding Report - Chico Basin Ranch, 10/2/19

2019-10-02 Thread Robert Snowden
We had one of our slowest days of the season at Chico today. With low
clouds and cool, damp conditions to start, things were pretty quiet. The
sun burned off the clouds for the last hour or so, and I thought that would
bring more birds, but that was not to be. Just not much activity near the
nets today.

We ended up banding 8 birds of 8 species:

Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1
Wilson's Warbler 1
Orange-crowned Warbler 1
Chipping Sparrow 1
Dark-eyed Junco, Oregon/intergrade 1
Song Sparrow 1
Hermit Thrush 1
White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 1

We band 6 days a week at Chico Basin, closed Sundays. Visitors are welcome
at our banding stations. Registration is required for groups. For more
information and hours of operation, visit birdconservancy.org/birdbanding.

For the remainder of the week, we'll be opening nets at 7:00 AM and closing
at noon, weather permitting. Come visit!

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies Banding Report - Chico Basin Ranch, 10/1/19

2019-10-01 Thread Robert Snowden
Happy October! I was much more of a fan of today's weather than I was of
the last few days', with overcast skies and seasonably mild temps. Too bad
it wasn't the most ideal for getting a high volume of migrant, and for the
3rd straight banding day we had under 20 new captures: 15 birds of 11
species, to be precise. We also had the most recaptures of any day by far
this season, with 8 birds, all banded this season. We're still waiting on
recaptures from previous years this season.

Despite the low volume, there was still a good variety of birds, both in
and around the nets. We were especially pleased by a lovely male
*Black-and-white
Warbler *in our first net on our first net run! That would be just the 8th
fall record for this species, and first since 2015. There was also good
vireo diversity (both *Cassin's *and *Plumbeous*).

As far as our common small migrants go, Wilson's Warblers have pretty much
slowed to a trickle and now seem to be handily outnumbered by Ruby-crowned
Kinglets at the banding site.

Today's summary:

Ruby-crowned Kinglet 3 + 3 recaptures
Wilson's Warbler 1 + 1 recapture
Black-and-white Warbler 1 (FOS)
Pink-sided Junco 1
Plumbeous Vireo 1
Cassin's Vireo 1
Hermit Thrush 2 + 2 recaptures
Gray Catbird 2 + 1 recapture
Spotted Towhee 1
Green-tailed Towhee 1
Blue Jay 1
Brown Thrasher 1 recapture

We band 6 days a week at Chico Basin, closed Sundays. Visitors are welcome
at our banding stations. Registration is required for groups. For more
information and hours of operation, visit birdconservancy.org/birdbanding.

For the remainder of the week, we'll be opening nets at 7:00 AM and closing
at noon, weather permitting. Come visit!

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Chico Basin Ranch, 9/30/19

2019-09-30 Thread Robert Snowden
Fittingly, the last day of what's been a warm and windy month was warm and
windy. We enjoyed about an hour of nice conditions this morning before the
south breeze picked up, and we had to close most of our nets by 9:00. Not
too many birds turned up as a result: 13 newly banded individuals, 1
recapture, and 6 total species.

The morning's highlight was another *Sharp-shinned Hawk*, a hatch-year
female that made for a nice contrast to last week's much smaller male.
Otherwise, we noted a decent number of Hermit Thrushes, Kinglets, and
Yellow-rumped Warblers around, but most of them were among the tall
cottonwoods on the more-protected north side of the banding station area
where we don't have nets set up. Here's hoping they'll turn up among the
nets tomorrow.

Another interesting capture was a male Ruby-crowned Kinglet with
yellow-orange crown feathers rather than the typical scarlet/ruby color.
This is a relatively rare color variation found in under 10% of male
kinglets!

Today's summary:

Wilson's Warbler 2
Ruby-crowned Kinglet 6
Hermit Thrush 2
Gray Catbird 1 + 1 recapture
Spotted Towhee 1
Sharp-shinned Hawk 1

We are open 6 days a week, closed on Sundays. Tomorrow we'll be operating
nets from 6:50–11:50 AM on Monday, and from 7:00 AM––Noon the remaining
days––weather permitting. Come visit!

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Chico Basin Ranch, 9/28/19

2019-09-28 Thread Robert Snowden
The weather today truly felt like fall for the first time, but
unfortunately, that made it a little harder for us to catch birds. Drizzle
postponed our net opening by an hour, and even after that, damp, cloudy,
and cool conditions persisted for the remainder of the morning. While I
appreciated the cooler temps, there weren't many birds to show for it, with
13 newly banded birds, 1 recapture, and 6 species.

There were a few interesting captures though. These included our first
*Red-naped
Sapsucker* of the season, and the 10th fall banding record for the species
here. The sapsucker also had the honor of being the 50th species banded
this season at Chico. We also had a *Red-eyed Vireo*––our 3rd capture of
the season of the species, more than any previous fall.

Today's summary:

Wilson's Warbler 5
Ruby-crowned Kinglet 3
Red-eyed Vireo 1
Cassin's Vireo 1
Hermit Thrush 2 + 1 recapture
Red-naped Sapsucker 1 (FOS)

We are open 6 days a week, closed on Sundays. Next week is our last week of
the season, and we'll be operating nets from 6:50–11:50 AM on Monday and
Tuesday, and from 7:00 AM––Noon the remaining days. Come visit!

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Chico Basin Ranch, 9/27/19

2019-09-27 Thread Robert Snowden
While it was another fairly breezy morning at here, the northerly wind
direction made a big difference compared to yesterday. Not only were most
nets more sheltered, but the wind direction was more favorable for the
migrants, and so things were rather productive. I banded 52 new birds and
had 2 recaptures, of 11 total species. Those numbers could've been a lot
higher but I was on my own and had to limit net hours somewhat––there were
a lot of birds around!

The most unique capture was a young male *Western Palm Warbler*, only the
second fall banding record here (the first was back in 2009)! Otherwise, it
was extremely thrushy, with a steady stream of Hermit Thrushes throughout
the morning. Sparrows were active as well, especially the White-crowneds,
and we had our first Mountain subspecies of the season.

Today's summary:

Ruby-crowned Kinglet 6 + 1 recapture
Wilson's Warbler 4
Orange-crowned Warbler 3
Dark-eyed Junco, Oregon 2
Pink-sided Junco, 1
Palm Warbler, Western 1 (FOS)
Lincoln's Sparrow 6
Hermit Thrush 18
White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 6
White-crowned Sparrow, Mountain 1 (FOS)
Song Sparrow 1
Spotted Towhee 3
Brown Thrasher 1 recapture

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Chico Basin Ranch, 9/26/19

2019-09-26 Thread Robert Snowden
There was a hint of fall briskness in the air this morning, but a
persistent south breeze kept the birds hunkered down and forced some of our
most productive nets to close early. That made for a markedly slower day
than yesterday's business, with 18 banded birds, 2 recaptures, and 11 total
species. A *Vesper's Sparrow *was the day's most unique capture.

The summary:

Wilson's Warbler 3 + 1 recapture
Ruby-crowned Kinglet 3
Orange-crowned Warbler 1
Dark-eyed Junco, Pink-sided 3
Lincoln's Sparrow 1

2019-09-25 Thread Robert Snowden
The sparrows have arrived in full force at Chico, and with them, our first
consistently busy day of the season. We totaled 63 banded birds and 1
recapture––eclipsing our previous top day of the fall by nearly 20
birds––and 18 species. We're still getting some steady captures of Wilson's
and Orange-crowned Warblers, sparrows are starting to take over,
representing just over half the total captures today. Among them were our
first *Song Sparrow *and *Spotted Towhee* of the season.

Today's summary:

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Chico Basin Ranch, 9/24/19

2019-09-24 Thread Robert Snowden
With overcast, breezy, and mild weather at the start of the morning, I
wasn't expecting too many birds today. But we still saw some action with a
modest stream of captures throughout the day, ending with 27 newly-banded
birds and 1 recapture, of 14 total species. We also surpassed 500 banded
birds for the season today!

The top highlight was a first-of-season Sharp-shinned Hawk, a young male,
that we got to show off to a visiting group of 1st- and 2nd-graders. There
also seemed to be plenty of sparrows and thrushes around; though we didn't
catch too many of them, we noticed quite a few more skulking around the
nets today. Both of the Hermit Thrushes we banded were likely of the
uncommon Pacific Lowland group based on their short wing measurements, just
like the individual we caught yesterday.

Today's summary:

Ruby-crowned Kinglet 5
Wilson's Warbler 5
Hammond's Flycatcher 2
Dusky Flycatcher 1
Orange-crowned Warbler 1
Chipping Sparrow 1
Lincoln's Sparrow 1
Dark-eyed Junco, Pink-sided 2
Dark-eyed Junco, Oregon 2

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Chico Basin Ranch, 9/21/19

2019-09-21 Thread Robert Snowden
What a difference a day makes. Last night's more-favorable weather brought
a nice influx of migrants this morning. One day after the slowest day of
the season, we had one of the busiest yet, with 43 newly-banded birds and 2
recaptures. Those numbers could've been even higher but some sporadic
breezy weather resulted in some net closures.

We had 12 species, mostly the usual suspects and nothing unusual. Quite a
few more sparrows today than previous mornings, with our highest Lincoln's
Sparrow totals so far, and many more lingering in nearby shrubs while I was
closing nets. I also noted that most of the Wilson's Warblers I was able to
take a close look at didn't have much fat deposited, suggesting they had
just arrived after some long-distance travel that used up their fuel
stores.

Today's summary:

Wilson's Warbler 19 + 1 recapture
Ruby-crowned Kinglet 2
House Wren 3
Dark-eyed Junco, Oregon 1
Orange-crowned Warbler 1
Dusky Flycatcher 1
Lincoln's Sparrow 9
MacGillivray's Warbler 1
White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 2
Hermit Thrush 1
American Robin 2
Brown Thrasher 1 + 1 recapture

We are open 6 days a week, closed on Sundays. Next week we'll be opening
nets at 6:50 AM and closing at 11:50 AM, weather permitting. There will be
a large school group visiting on Monday, so the best time to stop by to see
birds without too much commotion will be between 7:00-8:30 AM. Come visit!

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Chico Basin Ranch, 9/20/19

2019-09-20 Thread Robert Snowden
A very quiet morning today: no visitors, no volunteers, and few birds
around the banding station. While the weather was calm the first few hours,
it was easily the slowest day of the season so far, with just 6
newly-banded birds and 1 recapture. I suspect that last night's strong
southerly breezes weren't very conducive for migrants, among other factors.

Today's summary:

Wilson's Warbler 1
Orange-crowned Warbler 1
MacGillivray's Warbler 1
House Wren 1
Western Tanager 1
Gray Catbird 1
Willow/Alder ("Traill's") Flycatcher 1 (within-season recapture)

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Chico Basin Ranch, 9/18 & 9/19

2019-09-19 Thread Robert Snowden
After a tough start to the week, we enjoyed some calmer weather the last
few days that allowed for some more productive mist netting. Both yesterday
(Wednesday) and today were quite similar, with moderate bird activity and a
good variety of species: 32 newly banded birds + 1 recapture and 17 species
on Wednesday, and 33 newly banded birds of 15 species today. Between the
two days we had 25 total species banded.

Yesterday we had four new species for the season: *Audubon's Yellow-rumped
Warbler, **Brewer's Sparrow*, *Townsend's Solitaire*, and *Plumbeous Vireo*.
Today we captured 4 *Vesper Sparrows *all on a single net run, also a
first-of-season species. Prior to this year, no more than 3 Vespers have
ever been caught in a single fall season at Chico.

Yesterday also marked the midway point of the fall season here. It's
certainly going by fast! We just eclipsed the 400 birds banded mark today,
which is a fair bit off the pace from a typical season here. I'm hoping for
some more agreeable weather and some late migration pulses to bump our
numbers up in the final weeks.

A combined summary from the last two days:

Wilson's Warbler 17 + 1 within-season recapture
Willow/Alder ("Traill's") Flycatcher 1
Dark-eyed Junco, Oregon 2
Orange-crowned Warbler 3
Yellow Warbler 1
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 1 (FOS)
Clay-colored Sparrow 1
Brewer's Sparrow 1 (FOS)
House Wren 1
Lincoln's Sparrow 2
White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 1
Warbling Vireo 1
Red-eyed Vireo 1
Plumbeous Vireo 1 (FOS)
Townsend's Solitaire 2 (FOS)
Western Tanager 3
Hermit Thrush 1
Swainson's Thrush 1
Blue Grosbeak 5
Vesper Sparrow 4 (FOS)
Green-tailed Towhee 7
Gray Catbird 3
Brown Thrasher 2
Northern Mockingbird 1
American Robin 2

We are open 6 days a week, closed on Sundays. For the remainder of this
week we'll be opening nets at 6:40 AM and closing at 11:40 AM, weather
permitted. Visitors are welcome!

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Chico Basin Ranch, 9/17/19

2019-09-17 Thread Robert Snowden
More windy weather made today's banding a bit of a wash. With breezy
conditions right from the start, we could only manage running a few nets
for a brief period before we had to shut down. That yielded what I hope
(knock on wood) will be our lowest banding total of the season, with 3
birds: 2 Wilson's Warblers and a Hammond's Flycatcher. Hardly worth writing
as a list!

But such is the nature of field work. There were certainly seemed to be a
lot of bird movement around the ranch this morning, so if the weather can
cooperate perhaps there'll be some good banding activity ahead.

We are open 6 days a week, closed on Sundays. For the remainder of this
week we'll be opening nets at 6:40 AM and if it's not too windy, closing at
11:40 AM. Visitors are welcome!

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Chico Basin Ranch, 9/16/19

2019-09-16 Thread Robert Snowden
Unfortunately the weather wasn't very cooperative today. After a promising
start, a strong breeze suddenly began within an hour and a half of open
nets, and caused us to quickly shut things down. We still managed to catch
a few birds, with 15 newly-banded individuals and 2 recaptures, of 5 total
species. Among these was the first Ruby-crowned Kinglet of the season––our
40th species so far.

Today's summary:

Wilson's Warbler 11
Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1 (FOS)
Cassin's Vireo 1
Western Tanager 1
Brown Thrasher 3 (1 new, 2 within-season recaptures)

We are open 6 days a week, closed on Sundays. This week we'll be opening
nets at 6:40 AM and closing at 11:40 AM, with a potentially earlier close
if it's windy like today was. My fingers are crossed for calmer conditions
and more migrant activity. Visitors are welcome!

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Chico Basin Ranch, 9/14/19

2019-09-14 Thread Robert Snowden
The second week of the fall season is in the books for Chico Basin. Today
had the coolest start yet, but it warmed up pretty quickly by the end of
the morning. The birds were rather quiet, and we had a modest number of
captures but a pretty nice variety; we had 29 newly-banded birds of 14
species. Among the birds we particularly appreciated was the first *Red-breased
Nuthatch *of the season and a *Red-eyed Vireo*.

The summary:

Wilson's Warbler 9
Dusky Flycatcher 1
House Wren 1
Cassin's Vireo 1
MacGillivray's Warbler 2
Orange-crowned Warbler 3
Red-breasted Nuthatch 1 (FOS)
Lincoln's Sparrow 1
Red-eyed Vireo 1
Western Tanager 3
White-crowned Sparrow (Gambel's) 1
Gray Catbird 2
Yellow-breasted Chat 2
Northern Mockingbird 1

We are open 6 days a week, closed on Sundays. Next week we'll be opening
nets at 6:40 AM and closing at 11:40 AM, with a potentially earlier close
if it's hot or breezy. Visitors are welcome!

Quick correction on the date from this morning's update: obviously today is
September 13th, not the 12th. My apologies.

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Chico Basin Ranch, 9/12/19

2019-09-13 Thread Robert Snowden
We had a fairly 'regular' day of banding at Chico this morning. No
first-record captures this time (or even first of season species), just a
steady stream of mostly *Wilson's Warblers* after a slow start. About 2/3
of the Wilson's Warblers we banded today were hatch-year females.

Our totals from the day were 37 newly-banded birds of 12 species:

Wilson's Warbler 23
Dark-eyed Junco 1 (probably an Oregon Junco-type intergrade
Orange-crowned Warbler 2
Warbling Vireo 1
Yellow Warbler 1
Lincoln's Sparrow 1
Hermit Thrush 1
Swainson's Thrush 1
Yellow-breasted Chat 1
Green-tailed Towhee 1
Gray Catbird 1
Brown Thrasher 3

We are open 6 days a week, closed on Sundays. Tomorrow we'll be opening
nets at 6:40 AM and closing at 11:40 AM, with a potentially earlier close
if it's hot or breezy. Visitors are welcome!

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Chico Basin Ranch, 9/12/19

2019-09-12 Thread Robert Snowden
Last night's cold front brought some pleasantly cooler weather this
morning, and at first it seemed to bring plenty of birds. But after a busy
opening net check, things quickly slowed down, and when the wind started
picking up soon after, we had to shut down a little early. In the end, we
only banded 16 birds and had 1 recapture, of 11 total species.

But for the second day in the row, we had another superlative capture: a
juvenile *Red-headed Woodpecker, *the first banding record of this species
at Chico Basin! I suppose lightning does strike twice. Along with that
woodpecker we also had the first *White-crowned Sparrow *of the fall, as
well as a first-of-season *Blue Jay *adult in heavy molt.

A summary of the morning's birds:

Wilson's Warbler 4 + 1 recapture
Dusky Flycatcher 1
Orange-crowned Warbler 1
Western Tanager 3
Swainson's Thrush 1
Hermit Thrush 1
White-crowned Sparrow 1 (Gambel's subspecies, FOS)
Yellow-breasted Chat 1
Red-headed Woodpecker 1 (1st Chico Basin record)
American Robin 1
Blue Jay 1 (FOS)

We are open 6 days a week, closed on Sundays. This week we'll be opening
nets at 6:40 AM and closing at 11:40 AM, weather permitting. Hopefully the
wind will be a little calmer the next couple days. Visitors are welcome!

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Chico Basin Ranch, 9/11/19

2019-09-11 Thread Robert Snowden
It was a warm and breezy morning at Chico Basin, and a little on the quiet
side, with 24 newly banded birds, 3 recaptures, and 10 total species. But
what we lacked in quantity we made up for in quality. We banded the most
notable bird of the season to date: a hatch-year *Canyon Wren*, caught in
the very first net on the very first net run of the morning! Not only was
it the first-ever banding record of a the Canyon Wren at Chico, but it was
the first record of the species at any of the Bird Conservancy's banding
stations (and of course it's one of my favorite birds)! This individual
wasn't particularly furtive either, as we captured it again a few hours
later, and was heard vocalizing near the banding station at the end of the
morning.

We also had some noteworthy human visitors, with the Colorado State Land
Board stopping by for a few minutes. They were treated to a nice male *American
Redstart*, and our first *Western Tanager* of the season––a female that had
narrowly avoided our mist nets earlier in the morning.

A summary of the day's banded birds:

Wilson's Warbler 11 + 1 recapture
American Redstart 2
MacGillivray's Warbler 2 + 1 recapture
Orange-crowned Warbler 2 + 1 recapture
Clay-colored Sparrow 1
Canyon Wren 1 (first station record)
Lazuli Bunting 1 (FOS)
Lincoln's Sparrow 1
Western Tanager 1 (FOS)
Brown Thrasher 2

We are open 6 days a week, closed on Sundays. This week we'll be opening
nets at 6:40 AM and closing at 11:40 AM, weather permitting. Visitors are
welcome!

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Chico Basin Ranch, 9/10/19

2019-09-10 Thread Robert Snowden
After relatively modest migration activity the last few days, things picked
back this morning, both in the nets and in the woods surrounding the
banding station. We had relatively nice conditions for banding, and got to
enjoy our first real 'typical' day of the season: a good number of captures
and plenty of Wilson's Warblers to go around. Overall we had 46
newly-banded birds, 2 recaptures, and 16 total species. We would've had a
few more to add had so many pesky Brown Thrashers bounced out of the nets
before we could get to them! Meanwhile, after being flush with
Orange-crowned Warblers yesterday, they were almost entirely absent today.

A summary of our captures:

Wilson's Warbler 26
Dusky Flycatcher 1
Western Wood-Pewee 1
Cordilleran/Pacific-slope Flycatcher 1
Hammond's Flycatcher 1
Warbling Vireo 1
Lincoln's Sparrow 3
Cassin's Vireo 1
MacGillivray's Warbler 1
Gray Catbird 2
Green-tailed Towhee 2
Yellow-breasted Chat 1
Northern Mockingbird 3 (2 new + 1 within-season recapture)
American Robin 1 (FOS)
Brown Thrasher 2
Orange-crowned Warbler 1 (within-season recapture)

We are open 6 days a week, closed on Sundays. For the remainder of the
week, we'll be opening nets at 6:40 AM and closing at 11:40 AM, weather
permitting. Visitors are welcome!

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Chico Basin Ranch, 9/9/19

2019-09-09 Thread Robert Snowden
As the second week of the fall season gets underway at Chico, we had our
busiest day of the season so far, but still relatively modest by our
standards. It was also the coolest (and dampest) start to the morning yet,
and like last week, we caught more birds as the temperatures rose. The
majority of captures came in the last couple hours of the day.

For the first time, Wilson's Warblers were not the most abundant species at
our banding station. Instead, it was a busier day for Orange-crowned
Warblers and Lincoln's Sparrows. We also had a female 'Northern' oriole
that made for an interesting identification challenge. Overall, we banded
32 birds and had 1 recapture, of 11 total species:

Hammond's Flycatcher 1 (FOS)
Wilson's Warbler 4
Western Wood-Pewee 1
Cordilleran/Pacific-slope ("Western") Flycatcher 1
MacGillivray's Warbler 1
Orange-crowned Warbler 12 (11 new, 1 recapture from last week)
Lincoln's Sparrow 8
Swainson's Thrush 1
Bullock's/Baltimore Oriole 1 (possible hybrid)
Northern Mockingbird 1
Gray Catbird 1

We are open 6 days a week, closed on Sundays. We'll be opening nets
tomorrow at 6:30 AM and closing them at 11:30 AM, weather permitting; for
the remainder of the week we'll be operating from 6:40 - 11:40 AM. Visitors
are welcome!

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Chico Basin Ranch (El Paso), 9/7/19

2019-09-07 Thread Robert Snowden
The morning began damp and overcast and the birds were very quiet for
several hours. Despite the slow start, we saw a steady increase in activity
in our nets by the end of the banding day, and we finished with 23
newly-banded birds and 3 recaptures, and at least 12 species:

Western Wood-Pewee 1
Wilson's Warbler 10 (including 1 recapture)
American Redstart 1
Nashville Warbler 1 (4th Chico banding record)
House Wren 1
Orange-crowned Warbler 5
Gray Catbird 1
Canyon Towhee 1
Northern Mockingbird 1
Cordilleran/Pacific-slope Flycatcher 1 (Recapture)
Warbling Vireo 1 (Recapture)
Unidentified *Empidonax* Flycatcher (1 was likely a Least, the other
possibly a Dusky or Gray)

We are open 6 days a week, closed on Sundays. Next week we'll be opening at
6:30 AM on Monday and Tuesday, and closing at 11:30, weather permitting.

2019-09-05 Thread Robert Snowden
Another hot day at Chico Basin. Things started off quietly but as the
temperature increased, so briefly did our capture rates, before the
90-degree weather caused us to shut down early. We banded 29 birds of 14

Vireo (the 9th banding record at Chico Basin).

The day's summary:

Wilson's Warbler 10

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Chico Basin Ranch (El Paso), 9/4/19

2019-09-04 Thread Robert Snowden
Hi everyone,

Our third day of banding started off fairly slow with overcast, somewhat
humid weather. Once the clouds picked up, so did the birding activity,
though that was a little short-lived as the breezy late morning caused some
early net closures.

We ended with 23 birds banded today. It seemed to be a relatively busier
day for the resident and local breeder species than for migrants, but there
was some good variety, with 14 total species.

Among the more unique captures were a female Orchard Oriole (the 12th fall
record for Chico and only the 3rd since 2011) and a Canyon Towhee (only the
3rd-ever record here).

Our summary for the morning:

Wilson's Warbler 4
Willow/Alder ("Traill's") Flycatcher 1
MacGillivray's Warbler 1
House Wren 1
Chipping Sparrow 1
Orange-crowned Warbler 3
Clay-colored Sparrow 1
Cassin's Vireo 1
Lincoln's Sparrow 1
Orchard Oriole 1
Blue Grosbeak 1
Canyon Towhee 1
Northern Mockingbird 2
Brown Thrasher 4

We are open 6 days a week, closed on Sundays. We'll be opening at 6:30 AM
