[cobirds] Four Scoters at DeWeese Res., Custer Co.

2017-11-13 Thread millerrichj via Colorado Birds
Today I found four juvenile type scoters at DeWeese Reservoir. I watched
them for a while and three of them eventually showed white wing patches
when they preened. The third was very similar to the other three but never
showed a white patch. It didn't look much like a Surf Scoter either.
Conclusion is three White-winged and one unknown Scoter. There were also five
Snow Geese on the lake Not a common occurrence here.

No ice on the water yet. Scant snow cover on the Sangre De Cristos.
Winter is off to a slow start here.

[cobirds] Sabine Gull, DeWeese Res., Custer Co

2017-09-06 Thread millerrichj via Colorado Birds
The Sabine Gull continues at DeWeese Reservoir. It was there as late as

far to ID as to species

There was a juv. Chestnut-sided Warbler in a small grove of cottonwoods on
the shore next to the dam.

[cobirds] Hawks Galore in Wetmore (Custer)

2017-07-30 Thread millerrichj via Colorado Birds
This morning in the fields north of Wetmore I counted over 100 buteos in
an area of maybe 50 acres. Most were perched on fence posts, a few were on
the ground. None were flying. They were mixed buteo species. I
identified Red-tailed, Swainson's and a Harrier. It was private property and
most
were too far away to identify as species, however, they appeared to be
mostly buteos.

I don't remember ever seeing anything like this before It was almost
surreal. Why would so many hawks converge on one area in late July?

[cobirds] Unusual Gr. Horned Owl nest site: w/pics

2016-03-04 Thread millerrichj via Colorado Birds
This morning I spotted a Great Horned Owl nesting under the overhanging
ledge of a shear cliff about 200 ft above the ground. It was on the a butte
across the river from Pathfinder Park in Fremont Co. I assume it was
occupying an abandoned nest left by the ravens that once nested at this site.

The picture above shows the cliff where the nest is located. The
overhanging ledge is the shadowed area just below the top of butte. The butte

on prison property but can be viewed from Pathfinder Park. A scope is
required.

(This is my first attempt to add pics to a cobirds post.)

[cobirds] TWO Caspian Terns, Fremont Co.

2015-04-19 Thread millerrichj via Colorado Birds
This morning while I was birding at Brush Hollow Res., two Caspian Terns
showed up and proceeded to fly up and down the lake. Occasionally diving
for food. After about a half hour of continuously flying around they
disappeared.

Also at Brush Hollow were over one hundred Western Grebes, an Eared Grebe
and an imm. Bald Eagle. Yellow-rumped Warblers were in the trees along the
shore.

I drove to the Blue Heron Ponds to check for the terns but no luck there.

Later I found a Cattle Egret in a flooded field along CR 119 east of

[cobirds] Swans at Holcim Wetlands, Fremont

2015-02-17 Thread millerrichj via Colorado Birds
This morning there was a Tundra Swan and a Trumpeter Swan at the Holcim
Wetlands, on Rte 120 south of Penrose. The two stayed close together and
were rarely more than a few yards apart. This enabled comparing the head
shapes in a single scope view (and in a single camera frame.) The Tundra had
a
large yellow lore spot.

They were also here Sunday afternoon but the weather was windy, snowy and
getting dark. I returned this morning in bright sunshine to get a better
view and some good photos.

[cobirds] Rosy-Finches, Eastern Fremont Co.

2015-01-14 Thread millerrichj via Colorado Birds
This morning I was walking along CR 120 south of Penrose when a flock of
four or five dozen Rosy-Finches landed on the limestone bluff next to the
road. All of the ones I could identify were Gray-crowned Rosy-finches.
Later on at home, looking over some group photos of the flock, I only found
Gray-crowns.

The flock stayed along the road for about 20 mins., then took off south
toward the river. My location was on CR 120 about two miles west of the
Pueblo Co. line, just west of the bridge over Ranger Creek.

Red-necked Grebe - 2
Surf Scoter - 1
White-winged Scoter - 1
Long-tailed Duck - 1

This is the best birding that I've ever experienced at this location by

This morning at Holcim I had a single look at a Least Bittern as it flew

Bad news at the wetlands! The flooded Arkansas River has eroded away a
large piece of its bank at the northeast corner and is within a few feet of
breaking into the marsh. If this happens the containment of the marsh will
be lost and it will probably drain out when the river level subsides. I
hope I'm wrong.

[cobirds] Possible Laughing Gull, Custer Co.

2014-05-23 Thread millerrichj via Colorado Birds
Yesterday and today I watched and photographed a black headed gull at
DeWeese Reservoir which I am about 90% certain was a breeding plumage Laughing
Gull. I was 100% certain until I read K. Kaufman's caution that some first
summer Franklin's Gulls can resemble an adult Laughing Gull.

The wing pattern of my gull was typical for a Laughing Gull. The upper
wing had a gray mantle with white trailing edge and all black tips on the
primaries. The under wing was white with black on the primaries. The head
was solid black; no indication of being a partial hood. The bill and head
shape look close to the Laughing Gulls pictured in various field guides.

I have good photos both profile and flying if someone would like to look at
them and offer an opinion. The photos aren't posted anywhere; I would
have to e-mail them.

A pleasant surprise on the return home was the many dozens Lark Buntings in
the fields north of Wetmore. I haven't seen them here in these numbers
for several years.

the
point out near the island. It occasionally flew but not far. At one

markings on the LIGU were interesting. It had black dots on the sides of the
head, a black Mohawk stripe on the crown and partial dark collar around
the lower neck.

Earlier at this location, there was a Jaeger on the lake. It only flew
one time when it harassed couple of gulls. The plumage was uniformly dark
brown. I have no idea as to the species.

There were three white terns flying around the bay north of the point.

This afternoon there were seven (plus one) swans a-swimming in the east
Valco Pond on MacKenzie Ave. I believe they all were Tundra Swans. Most but
not all had the yellow lore spot. A second opinion on these would be
welcomed (if they stick around.)

Early this morning a single Common Redpoll showed up at my backyard feeder

long enough to have its picture taken and then flew off. I haven't seen
it since.

[cobirds] Canon City Hackberry Bird Activity

2012-10-14 Thread millerrichj
This weekend the hackberry trees at the Riverwalk and Veteran's Park came
alive with migrants. There were numerous Yellow-rumped Warblers, Townsend
Warblers and Ruby-crowned Kinglets. Also several Orange-crowned Warblers,
one Black and White Warbler and one Magnolia Warbler were seen. At
Veteran's Park, many Robins and Cedar Waxwings were dining on the hackberry

[cobirds] Sparrows at Holcim Wetlands, FreCo

2012-10-06 Thread millerrichj
Today there were hundreds of sparrows, mostly White-crowned and Song, in
the brushy areas around the Holcim Wetlands. Highlights were a
White-throated Sparrow and a brilliantly rusty, eastern-type Fox Sparrow.

It came as no surprise when a flock of 137 Sandhill Cranes were seen
flying westward over the wetlands.

The water level in the wetlands was reduced by 2 to 3 ft.after the flash
flood on Hardscrabble Creek this summer. It completely washed out the
beaver dam that was holding a high water level in the marsh. As of today I
haven't see any sign that the beavers are rebuilding the dam.

[cobirds] Least Bittern, HolcimWet Lands, FreCo

2012-07-25 Thread millerrichj
This morning while walking the south shore of the marsh, I flushed a Least
Bittern from the cattails along the shore. It flew to the center of the
marsh and disappeared. This is the first time I've seen a Least Bittern
here this year. It was at the same location where the LEBIs were seen last
summer.

I found 35 species at Holcim today including two Says Phoebes, two Black
Phoebes and three Eastern Phoebes.

The Holcim Wetlands is south of Penrose on SR 120, about 1 mile west of the

[cobirds] Grace's Warbler at Pueblo Mountain Park

2012-06-21 Thread millerrichj
I went to Pueblo Mountain Park to see the Acorn Woodpeckers and immediately
found one at the location described in the CO Rare Bird Alert. I also
saw one at a similarly pock-marked dead ponderosa next to the creek just
west of the horseshoe building.

While hiking around the park I found a singing male Grace's Warbler. It
was in large ponderosas near the water treatment building at the south

[cobirds] DeWeese Res. SWA, Custer Co.

2012-04-30 Thread millerrichj
I spent most of the day birding around the DeWeese Reservoir SWA.
Fifty-nine species were seen. Highlights were:

1 fm - Summer Tanager (next to dam)
1 alt - Common Loon
1 - American Bittern (stalking the shore of the willow island)
1 - Black-necked Stilt
1 - Sora
Dozens - Wilson Phalaropes

The area below the dam sometimes produces good warblers during migration
but not today. There were two Orange-crowns here and that was it. The pine
woods had a few Yellow-rumps.

The shallow end of the reservoir had lots of ducks and geese plus ibises,
avocets, willets, pelicans and more.

[cobirds] Pueblo Gulls

2011-12-28 Thread millerrichj
This morning there was an adult Mew Gull at Minnequa Lake in Pueblo. It
was with several hundred gulls clustered together on the ice at the center of
the lake. Minnequa Lake is in south Pueblo near Saint Mary-Corwin

This afternoon I saw two very large, all-white gulls on the tires at the
South Shore Marina at Lake Pueblo. They were all white from head to tail
and wingtip to wingtip - no dark patches. The bills were pale with dark
tips. I believe they were imm. Glaucous Gulls. There was also a Lesser
Black-backed Gull on the tires.

There were hundreds, maybe thousands, of Goldeneyes near the dam on Lake
Pueblo.

[cobirds] WORM-EATING WARBLER, Salida, Chaffee Co.

2011-05-31 Thread millerrichj
While birding this morning in the Salida area, I found a WORM-EATING
WARBLER at the Frantz Lake SWA. It was in the underbrush up on the hillside
just south of the SWA parking lot. I went back to my car to get my camera.
It took over an hour to refind the WEWA, and then it flew off before it
could get a picture. I refound it about 5:00 PM but still could not get an
unobstructed picture. The three times I saw it, it was located near the point
where the Fisherman's Trail starts up the hillside.

While I was searching for the WEWA, I also saw a female Black-and-white
Warbler and a male Hooded Warbler in the same area.

Other warblers seen today in the Salida area were:

Magnolia Warbler - 1 fm seen on CR 105 in the big willows behind the
red fence
American Redstart - 3 fm/imm, two at Frantz Lake and one at Sands Lake
MacGillivray Warbler - 4
Orange-crowned Warbler - 1
Common Yellowthroat -2
Yellow-rumped Warbler - still a few around
Yellow Warbler - plentiful at all locations
Wilson Warbler - plentiful at all locations

A good day for warblers.

Chestnut-sided Warbler1 fem
Magnolia Warbler1 male
Northern Parula1 male
Black and White Warbler1 male
Hooded Warbers2 fem. (one had a black nape, one had no black on
the head)
Sandhill Cranes2
Sora1
Ash-throated Flycatcher1
Eastern Kingbird2
Am. White Pelicans41
Yellow-headed Blackbirds5
White-faced Ibis28

The warblers were seen in the willow thicket below the dam. How these six

This morning I found a Yellow-throated Vireo in cottonwoods along the
eastern section of the Canon City riverwalk, a.k.a. the Brookside Jct Trail.
It was about 200 yds west of the 3/4 mile trail marker, where the river
makes a sharp bend. As best as I could tell with my limited hearing, it was
not singing.

Also seen here this morning was a very dingy looking White-throated
Sparrow (1st winter?) and a Peregrine Falcon which took an unsuccessful power

the leg color was light yellow. Is this a problem? All other features were
consistant with a juv. BLKI.

Other birds at Lathrop were:
Barrows Goldeneyes, 1 male, 1 female
Bald Eagle, 1 adult, 1 imm
Bonaparte Gull 1

Lake Martin and Horseshoe Lake are about 20 to 30% frozen.

[cobirds] Possible Kittiwake at Lathrop SP, Huefano

2010-10-04 Thread millerrichj
Early yesterday morning there were about a dozen gulls on the water in the
middle of Lake Martin at Lathrop SP. They were mostly Ring-bills plus one
juv. Sabine's and one unknown.

The unk. gull was a long way off, but I was able to observe the following
using my scope at 60X:

Size - Larger than the Sabine's and smaller than the Ring-bills.
Head - White with a dark smudge behind the eye.
Bill - medium size, all light yellow, no marks
Underparts - white
Mantle - gray, darker than the Ring-bills.
Wings - I didn't see it fly, but it raised its wings a couple times.
The wing topsides were gray out to a small black triangle at the tip.
Tail - I couldn't see it.
Legs - also not seen.
Eye color - too far away

My best guess on this: adult Black-legged Kittiwake. I got some long
distant pictures which show the relative size and shape but no details of the
plumage. The gulls departed the lake around 9:30 AM and had not returned by
4:30 PM.

Also at seen Lake Martin, were two Cattle Egrets in non-breeding plumage.

I went to Lathrop SP mainly for migrant songbirds which can produce some
real rareties this time of year. The reality was a nearly total songbird
vacuum.

[cobirds] Golden-crowned Sparrow at Tunnel Drive

2010-03-20 Thread millerrichj
Colorado's other Golden-crowned Sparrow continues its winter sojourn at
Tunnel Drive in Canon City. This morning it was on the ground with several
White-crowned Sparrows next to the metal gate at the end of Tunnel Drive.
This is its fourth winter at Tunnel Dr. Also seen in the area were two
Rufous-crowned Sparrows and a imm. Bald Eagle.

This afternoon I saw two FOY Tree Swallows flying along the Arkansas
River. Appropriate for the first day of spring!

[cobirds] Field Sparrow in Pueblo

2010-02-24 Thread millerrichj
This morning I found a Field Sparrow in with a dozen or so juncos at Runyon
Lake in Pueblo. The juncos and sparrow were seen along the creek that
flows out of the lake into the Arkansas River.

This Field Sparrow had a plain gray face and underparts. The the crown
was rufous but there was no rufous coloring on the face or underparts.
Similar to the Field Sparrow illustration in Sibley labeled Gray adult.

I also stopped by Lake Pueblo this afternoon. The Great Black-backed Gull
was at the south marina. The Long-tailed Duck was at the western ice limit
along with a Lesser Black-backed Gull.

[cobirds] Pueblo Reservoir Birds

2009-12-30 Thread millerrichj
I checked out Pueblo Res. yesterday (12/29) for waterfowl. There were
there were hundreds, possibly thousands, of ducks on the water.Mostly C.
Goldeneyes and C. Mergansers west of the North Shore Marina. Unfortunately
this area was a shooting gallery. Whenever there was a volley of gunfire,
the ducks would take off and fly in all directions. This made it difficult
to systematically check over all of them. The best find was a pair of
imperturbable Common Loons.

Near the dam things were quieter and I found a pair of LONG-TAILED DUCKS.
One was a handsome basic male. Its partner was a basic female (or maybe a
1st winter).

There weren't a whole lot of gulls on the tires at the South Marina. An
adult Lesser Black-backed Gull and an adult Great Black-backed Gull were
seen here among the Herrings and Ring-bills.

[cobirds] Golden-crowned Sparrow, Tunnel Drive, FreCo

2009-11-27 Thread millerrichj
This morning I got a couple of good looks at the Golden-crowned Sparrow
that's been at Tunnel Dr. since October. It was in brush next to the metal
gate at the end of Tunnel Dr. It can sometimes be hard to find; my success
rate is only about 50%. There were also several Rufous-crowned Sparrows
and lots of Canyon Towhees here.

Tunnel Drive intersects US 50 west of Canyon City, just past the old
prison.

[cobirds] Blackburnian Warbler, Canon City

2009-10-25 Thread millerrichj
I stopped at Veterans Park in Canon City this morning to see if the
Black-throated Blue Warbler was still around. I found the BTBW plus a
Blackburnian Warbler nearby. There were also several Yellow-rumped Warblers
in the
park. These warblers were all found in the hackberry trees behind the
Tourist Info Center.

Veterans Park is on US 50 at the west side of town.

[cobirds] Black-throated Blue Warbler in Canon City, FreCo

2009-10-23 Thread millerrichj
Around noon today I found a male Black-throated Blue Warbler at Veteran's
Park in Canon City. Its was feeding in the hackberry trees behind the
Tourist Info Center. The were also many Yellow-rumped Warblers around the
park. Veterans Park is on US 50 at the west end of town.

Earlier this morning I found a White-winged Dove at the corner of Clover
and Ohio Sts. in Canon City. There is a small population of WWDOs among the
many E. Collared Doves in this part of town.

On Monday of this week, I saw another male Black-throated Blue Warbler
along the Arkansas Riverwalk in Canon City.

[cobirds] Golden-crowned Sparrow, Tunnel Dr., FreCo

2009-10-20 Thread millerrichj
This morning I found a Golden-crowned Sparrow at the end of Tunnel Dr. in
Canon City. It was in brush alongside the dirt road that goes down to the
brick pump house. It's almost certainly the same GCSP that was here the
past three winters, staying through the end of March. I haven't seen any of
the Rufous-crowned Sparrows here yet this fall.

The trailhead parking lot is closed for repairs due to a flash flood. A
lot of the brush and cactus vegetation around the parking area has been
washed away or bulldozed. The parking area has been enlarged to the west and
a
catchment basin constructed in the area west of the parking lot. I
mention this because this was probably the most intensely birded brush patch
in
Fremont Co. Now much of it is gone .. and they're not finished.

[cobirds] Red-bellied Woodpecker, Pueblo SP

2009-06-06 Thread millerrichj
Today I found a noisy, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER at the Osprey Picnic Ground
in the Rock Canyon section of Pueblo State Park. It was churring away in
the tops of the tall cottonwoods near the circle at the end of the access
road. If it stays around it shouldn't be too hard to find. It was very
vocal.

Also found here were a Brown Thrasher (FOY) and a male Orchard Oriole (FOY)

[cobirds] Red-throated Loon, Fremont Co.

2009-05-25 Thread millerrichj
Apparently undisturbed by the crowd of fishermen, the RED-THROATED LOON
was still present at Brush Hollow Reservoir this morning. Other waterfowl
present were Canada Geese, Coots and Western Grebes - species which seem to
be tolerant of the human activity.

[cobirds] Red-throated Loon at Brush Hollow Res., FreCo

2009-05-19 Thread millerrichj
Usually I don't expect much when I check out Brush Hollow Reservoir this
time of year because of the heavy use by fishermen. Early this morning,
however, I was amazed to find a basic RED-THROATED LOON out in the middle of
the res. just off the boat launching ramp. I was able to get some pretty
awful pictures of it with my zoom, point and shoot Sony.

Brush Hollow Res is near Penrose in Fremont Co. It is small with lots of
access points so the RTLO would very easy for someone to find if it stays
there.

[cobirds] Summer Tanager, Fremont Co.

2009-04-28 Thread millerrichj
This morning I saw a stunning male Summer Tanager in a cottonwood tree at
near the eastern end of the Arkansas Riverwalk in Canon City. Also, many
Western Tanagers were out and about along the riverwalk.

The riverwalk was teeming with Yellow-rumped Warblers this morning. I
counted over 100 and I know I missed many more. The caddis fly hatch is in
progress and this is attracting scores of swallows and warblers.

[cobirds] Kentucky Warbler at DeWeese Res., Custer Co.

2009-04-27 Thread millerrichj
I spent today birding in Custer Co. and had my first multiple warbler
species day (six) of the year. The highlight was a KENTUCKY WARBLER found in
the willow thicket below the dam at DeWeese Res. This thicket is almost
impenetrable but I was able to see birds moving around in it by looking down
from the cliff above it. Besides the KEWA, there were a dozen or so
Yellow-rumps, a couple of Wilson Warblers and a FOY C. Yellowthoat here. This
spot has produced several real gems in the past few years and it's a good
place to check out during warbler migration.

The reservoir is full and there is little exposed shoreline.
Shorebirdwise there was a Spotted Sandpiper, an Avocet and several Wilson
Phalaropes.
Hundreds of ducks but nothing unusual.
