[cobirds] Four Scoters at DeWeese Res., Custer Co.
Today I found four juvenile type scoters at DeWeese Reservoir. I watched them for a while and three of them eventually showed white wing patches when they preened. The third was very similar to the other three but never showed a white patch. It didn't look much like a Surf Scoter either. Conclusion is three White-winged and one unknown Scoter. There were also five Snow Geese on the lake Not a common occurrence here. No ice on the water yet. Scant snow cover on the Sangre De Cristos. Winter is off to a slow start here. [cobirds] Sabine Gull, DeWeese Res., Custer Co
The Sabine Gull continues at DeWeese Reservoir. It was there as late as 4:00 PM. I also saw a small white egret. It was on the far shore, but too far to ID as to species There was a juv. Chestnut-sided Warbler in a small grove of cottonwoods on the shore next to the dam. Rich Miller -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Hawks Galore in Wetmore (Custer)
This morning in the fields north of Wetmore I counted over 100 buteos in an area of maybe 50 acres. Most were perched on fence posts, a few were on the ground. None were flying. They were mixed buteo species. I identified Red-tailed, Swainson's and a Harrier. It was private property and most were too far away to identify as species, however, they appeared to be mostly buteos. I don't remember ever seeing anything like this before It was almost surreal. Why would so many hawks converge on one area in late July? Rich Miller Canon City -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Unusual Gr. Horned Owl nest site: w/pics
This morning I spotted a Great Horned Owl nesting under the overhanging ledge of a shear cliff about 200 ft above the ground. It was on the a butte across the river from Pathfinder Park in Fremont Co. I assume it was occupying an abandoned nest left by the ravens that once nested at this site. GHOW on nest Butte The picture above shows the cliff where the nest is located. The overhanging ledge is the shadowed area just below the top of butte. The butte is on prison property but can be viewed from Pathfinder Park. A scope is required. (This is my first attempt to add pics to a cobirds post.) [cobirds] Long-tailed Duck, Valco Pond, Freemont Co.
Late this afternoon there was a non-breeding Long-tailed Duck swimming on the open water at the east Valco Pond in Canon City. Standing on the ice were twenty-one Gr. White-fronted Geese. Dozens of Common Goldeneyes were on the water and hundreds of geese were standing on the ice. Earlier this afternoon at Rouse park I found a Hermit Thrush and a White-winged Dove in the pines around the east parking lot. A few Yellow-rumps were in the pine trees. [cobirds] TWO Caspian Terns, Fremont Co.
This morning while I was birding at Brush Hollow Res., two Caspian Terns showed up and proceeded to fly up and down the lake. Occasionally diving for food. After about a half hour of continuously flying around they disappeared. Also at Brush Hollow were over one hundred Western Grebes, an Eared Grebe and an imm. Bald Eagle. Yellow-rumped Warblers were in the trees along the shore. I drove to the Blue Heron Ponds to check for the terns but no luck there. Later I found a Cattle Egret in a flooded field along CR 119 east of Florence. [cobirds] Swans at Holcim Wetlands, Fremont
This morning there was a Tundra Swan and a Trumpeter Swan at the Holcim Wetlands, on Rte 120 south of Penrose. The two stayed close together and were rarely more than a few yards apart. This enabled comparing the head shapes in a single scope view (and in a single camera frame.) The Tundra had a large yellow lore spot. They were also here Sunday afternoon but the weather was windy, snowy and getting dark. I returned this morning in bright sunshine to get a better view and some good photos. [cobirds] Rosy-Finches, Eastern Fremont Co.
This morning I was walking along CR 120 south of Penrose when a flock of four or five dozen Rosy-Finches landed on the limestone bluff next to the road. All of the ones I could identify were Gray-crowned Rosy-finches. Later on at home, looking over some group photos of the flock, I only found Gray-crowns. The flock stayed along the road for about 20 mins., then took off south toward the river. My location was on CR 120 about two miles west of the Pueblo Co. line, just west of the bridge over Ranger Creek. [cobirds] Huerfano and Las Animas Cos. Birding
This morning I visited Lake Trinidad SP (Las Animas) and was amazed by the variety of ducks, loons, grebes, etc on the water. It was moving around in the vines and lower branches of the large cottonwoods along the trail about 200 yds. west of the old MacKenzie Ave parking area. (The old parking area is about a 1/4 mile walk from the present parking area at MacKenzie Ave.) Numerous Wilson Warblers and Western Tanagers were also seen along the trail. The Scissor-tailed Flycatcher that I saw July 8 along Rte 67 in Fremont Co. was present at the same location this morning. This is 0.75 miles (as measured) north of the Custer Co. line. Or south of the driveway with the FOR SALE sign. This morning it was conspicuously perched on a power line along the highway. When I returned 3 hrs later it was perched in a dead tree. [cobirds] Least Bittern, Holcim Wetlands, FreCo
This morning at Holcim I had a single look at a Least Bittern as it flew by me along the south shore of the marsh. Later I heard a LEBI cooing a few times. Same one I suppose. Bad news at the wetlands! The flooded Arkansas River has eroded away a large piece of its bank at the northeast corner and is within a few feet of breaking into the marsh. If this happens the containment of the marsh will be lost and it will probably drain out when the river level subsides. I hope I'm wrong. [cobirds] Possible Laughing Gull, Custer Co.
Yesterday and today I watched and photographed a black headed gull at DeWeese Reservoir which I am about 90% certain was a breeding plumage Laughing Gull. I was 100% certain until I read K. Kaufman's caution that some first summer Franklin's Gulls can resemble an adult Laughing Gull. The wing pattern of my gull was typical for a Laughing Gull. The upper wing had a gray mantle with white trailing edge and all black tips on the primaries. The under wing was white with black on the primaries. The head was solid black; no indication of being a partial hood. The bill and head shape look close to the Laughing Gulls pictured in various field guides. I have good photos both profile and flying if someone would like to look at them and offer an opinion. The photos aren't posted anywhere; I would have to e-mail them. A pleasant surprise on the return home was the many dozens Lark Buntings in the fields north of Wetmore. I haven't seen them here in these numbers for several years. [cobirds] Swans and other goodies, Huerfano Co.
I spent a windy day birding the lakes near Walsenburg in Huerfano CO. At Lake Maria (five miles east of Walsenburg on SR10) there were fifteen swans. Three of them were close enough to identify as Trumpeter Swans. The other twelve were too far away. With the distant swans was a single American White Pelican. A big surprise was a flock of 88 Sandhill Cranes at the south end of the lake. At Lake Martin in Lathrop SP, there were two Common Loons and a Red-necked Grebe. I counted 335 Common Goldeneyes on Lake Martin among which I found a single male Barrow's Goldeneye. Horseshoe Lake at Lathrop had numerous hunters and frequent gunfire. I stayed away. [cobirds] Little Gull, Jaeger at Lake Pueblo
This afternoon there was a juvenile Little Gull on the lake at West Fisherman's Point. I watched it for about an hour. It mostly stayed west of the point out near the island. It occasionally flew but not far. At one point it was next to two juv. Sabine Gulls; it was noticeably smaller. The markings on the LIGU were interesting. It had black dots on the sides of the head, a black Mohawk stripe on the crown and partial dark collar around the lower neck. Earlier at this location, there was a Jaeger on the lake. It only flew one time when it harassed couple of gulls. The plumage was uniformly dark brown. I have no idea as to the species. I also saw three juv. Sabine Gulls on the lake. [cobirds] Sparrows at Holcim Wetlands, FreCo
Today there were hundreds of sparrows, mostly White-crowned and Song, in the brushy areas around the Holcim Wetlands. Highlights were a White-throated Sparrow and a brilliantly rusty, eastern-type Fox Sparrow. It came as no surprise when a flock of 137 Sandhill Cranes were seen flying westward over the wetlands. The water level in the wetlands was reduced by 2 to 3 ft.after the flash flood on Hardscrabble Creek this summer. It completely washed out the beaver dam that was holding a high water level in the marsh. As of today I haven't see any sign that the beavers are rebuilding the dam. This is the first time I've seen a Least Bittern here this year. It was at the same location where the LEBIs were seen last summer. I found 35 species at Holcim today including two Says Phoebes, two Black Phoebes and three Eastern Phoebes. [cobirds] Pueblo Gulls
This morning there was an adult Mew Gull at Minnequa Lake in Pueblo. It was with several hundred gulls clustered together on the ice at the center of the lake. Minnequa Lake is in south Pueblo near Saint Mary-Corwin Hospital. This afternoon I saw two very large, all-white gulls on the tires at the South Shore Marina at Lake Pueblo. They were all white from head to tail and wingtip to wingtip - no dark patches. The bills were pale with dark tips. I believe they were imm. Glaucous Gulls. There was also a Lesser Black-backed Gull on the tires. There were hundreds, maybe thousands, of Goldeneyes near the dam on Lake Pueblo. [cobirds] Summer Tanager, Canon City
Today was my best day yet this fall for migrant songbirds in Canon City. This morning I found an all red, male Summer Tanager along the Arkansas Riverwalk. It was about 150 yds. west of the MacKensie Ave parking lot. Other migrants seen today on the Riverwalk were a Northern Waterthrush, an American Redstart, a MacGillivrays Warbler and twelve Wilsons Warblers. [cobirds] Least Bittern, Fremont Co.
This morning the Least Bittern at the Holcim Wetlands was much more active than usual. It flew across the area of open water on the south shore of the marsh 7 or 8 times in the space of an hour. I was able to get a few blurry photos of it in flight. Rich Miller Canon City -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Least Bittern, Holcim Marsh
Late this morning I flushed the Least Bittern as I was walking along the south shore of the marsh. It disappeared into the tall cattails near the center of the marsh. After an hour's wait it hadn't reappeared. My viewing time of the bittern in the three trips to Holcim is about 14 seconds total. [cobirds] Least Bittern, Holcim Wetlands, FreCo
Yesterday morning while I was walking around the cattail marsh at the Holcim Wetlands, a Least Bittern flushed up from the shoreline and flew off into the tall cattails. I went back to the car and got my camera, but never got another look at it. I returned this morning hoping for a picture but again the LEBI flushed up unexpectedly and disappeared into the cattails. It didn't reappear. Other birds seen today were a Black Phoebe in the marsh and a Gr. Roadrunner along CR 120 near the Beaver Cr. bridge. The Holcim Wetlands is south of Penrose on SR 120, about 1 mile west of the Holcim cement plant. Parking and trails provided. [cobirds] WORM-EATING WARBLER, Salida, Chaffee Co.
While birding this morning in the Salida area, I found a WORM-EATING WARBLER at the Frantz Lake SWA. It was in the underbrush up on the hillside just south of the SWA parking lot. I went back to my car to get my camera. It took over an hour to refind the WEWA, and then it flew off before it could get a picture. I refound it about 5:00 PM but still could not get an unobstructed picture. The three times I saw it, it was located near the point where the Fisherman's Trail starts up the hillside. While I was searching for the WEWA, I also saw a female Black-and-white Warbler and a male Hooded Warbler in the same area. Other warblers seen today in the Salida area were: Magnolia Warbler - 1 fm seen on CR 105 in the big willows behind the red fence American Redstart - 3 fm/imm, two at Frantz Lake and one at Sands Lake MacGillivray Warbler - 4 Orange-crowned Warbler - 1 Common Yellowthroat -2 Yellow-rumped Warbler - still a few around Yellow Warbler - plentiful at all locations Wilson Warbler - plentiful at all locations A good day for warblers. [cobirds] Birding at DeWeese Res., Custer Co.
I spent most of the day birding at DeWeese Reservoir. A total of 67 species were seen in this area. Highlights were: Chestnut-sided Warbler1 fem Magnolia Warbler1 male Northern Parula1 male Black and White Warbler1 male Hooded Warbers2 fem. (one had a black nape, one had no black on the head) Sandhill Cranes2 Sora1 Ash-throated Flycatcher1 Eastern Kingbird2 Am. White Pelicans41 Yellow-headed Blackbirds5 White-faced Ibis28 The warblers were seen in the willow thicket below the dam. How these six eastern warblers all ended up at this small (less than one acre) willow thicket today is a mystery to me! [cobirds] Yellow-throated Vireo, Canon City, Fremont
This morning I found a Yellow-throated Vireo in cottonwoods along the eastern section of the Canon City riverwalk, a.k.a. the Brookside Jct Trail. It was about 200 yds west of the 3/4 mile trail marker, where the river makes a sharp bend. As best as I could tell with my limited hearing, it was not singing. Also seen here this morning was a very dingy looking White-throated Sparrow (1st winter?) and a Peregrine Falcon which took an unsuccessful power dive at a couple of startled teals on the river. The warbler selection was limited to numerous Yellow-rumps. All three Phoebe species were present this AM. [cobirds] Hooded Warbler, DeWeese Res., Custer Co.
This morning I found a male Hooded Warbler in the willows along Grape Creek just below the DeWeese Res. dam. There were also a few Wilson Warblers and many Yellow-rumps in the willow thicket here. The reservoir is full and overflowing at the spillway. With almost no exposed shoreline, there were only a few dozen shorebirds. Five Marbled Godwits, six Wilson Phalaropes, Least Sandpipers, Spotted Sandpipers and a Greater Yellowlegs. There were a couple hundred ducks and coots at the shallow end but nothing unusual. [cobirds] Pine Warbler, Canon City
This afternoon I refound the Pine Warbler that has been at the Arkansas Riverwalk in Canon City for about a week now. As before it was near the 1/2 mile marker on the Bluff Trail. It was in the small trees about 100 yds north of the trail marker. There was also a female Williamsons Sapsucker in these trees. [cobirds] Pine Warbler, Canon City
I found a Pine Warbler this morning while doing a GBBC along the Arkansas Riverwalk in Canon City. It was just west of the 1/2 mile marker on the Bluff Trail, in with a bunch of juncos and chickadees next to the trail. It's likely the same one found near here by the DFO last Thursday. [cobirds] Red-headed Woodpecker in Custer Co.
This morning I saw a juv. Red-headed Woodpecker in Wetmore, Custer Co. It was in the cottonwoods along Hardscrabble Creek across from the Wetmore Community Center. No doubt it was the same one I saw at this location one month ago. In addition to being out of range and out of season, it appears to be spending the winter in this small town at the foot of the Wet Mountains. Very strange. [cobirds] Black-legged Kittiwake with yellow legs!!
There was a juvenile Black-legged Kittiwake today at Lathrop SP in Huerfano Co.(See Note) It was with dozens of gulls, mostly Ring-billed, on Martin Lake. When it landed on the ice, I was able check out the legs which were very small as expected. Instead of being black or even dark, however, the leg color was light yellow. Is this a problem? All other features were consistant with a juv. BLKI. Other birds at Lathrop were: Barrows Goldeneyes, 1 male, 1 female Bald Eagle, 1 adult, 1 imm Bonaparte Gull 1 Lake Martin and Horseshoe Lake are about 20 to 30% frozen. Rich Miller Canon City Note: There was a Black-legged Kittiwake reported here on Nov. 28. by Polly Wren Neldner. [cobirds] Possible Kittiwake at Lathrop SP, Huefano
Early yesterday morning there were about a dozen gulls on the water in the middle of Lake Martin at Lathrop SP. They were mostly Ring-bills plus one juv. Sabine's and one unknown. The unk. gull was a long way off, but I was able to observe the following using my scope at 60X: Size - Larger than the Sabine's and smaller than the Ring-bills. Head - White with a dark smudge behind the eye. Bill - medium size, all light yellow, no marks Underparts - white Mantle - gray, darker than the Ring-bills. Wings - I didn't see it fly, but it raised its wings a couple times. The wing topsides were gray out to a small black triangle at the tip. Tail - I couldn't see it. Legs - also not seen. Eye color - too far away My best guess on this: adult Black-legged Kittiwake. I got some long distant pictures which show the relative size and shape but no details of the plumage. The gulls departed the lake around 9:30 AM and had not returned by 4:30 PM. Also at seen Lake Martin, were two Cattle Egrets in non-breeding plumage. I went to Lathrop SP mainly for migrant songbirds which can produce some real rareties this time of year. The reality was a nearly total songbird vacuum. I was able get some good for-the -record pictures shooting out of the car window. To my surprise, DeWesse Res. was still frozen over. [cobirds] Field Sparrow in Pueblo
This morning I found a Field Sparrow in with a dozen or so juncos at Runyon Lake in Pueblo. The juncos and sparrow were seen along the creek that flows out of the lake into the Arkansas River. This Field Sparrow had a plain gray face and underparts. The the crown was rufous but there was no rufous coloring on the face or underparts. Similar to the Field Sparrow illustration in Sibley labeled Gray adult. I also stopped by Lake Pueblo this afternoon. The Great Black-backed Gull was at the south marina. [cobirds] Pueblo Reservoir Birds
I checked out Pueblo Res. yesterday (12/29) for waterfowl. There were there were hundreds, possibly thousands, of ducks on the water.Mostly C. Goldeneyes and C. Mergansers west of the North Shore Marina. Unfortunately this area was a shooting gallery. Whenever there was a volley of gunfire, the ducks would take off and fly in all directions. This made it difficult to systematically check over all of them. The best find was a pair of imperturbable Common Loons. Near the dam things were quieter and I found a pair of LONG-TAILED DUCKS. One was a handsome basic male. Its partner was a basic female (or maybe a 1st winter). There weren't a whole lot of gulls on the tires at the South Marina. An adult Lesser Black-backed Gull and an adult Great Black-backed Gull were seen here among the Herrings and Ring-bills. [cobirds] Golden-crowned Sparrow, Tunnel Dr., FreCo
This morning I found a Golden-crowned Sparrow at the end of Tunnel Dr. in Canon City. It was in brush alongside the dirt road that goes down to the brick pump house. It's almost certainly the same GCSP that was here the past three winters, staying through the end of March. I haven't seen any of the Rufous-crowned Sparrows here yet this fall. The trailhead parking lot is closed for repairs due to a flash flood. A lot of the brush and cactus vegetation around the parking area has been washed away or bulldozed. The parking area has been enlarged to the west and a catchment basin constructed in the area west of the parking lot. I mention this because this was probably the most intensely birded brush patch in Fremont Co. Now much of it is gone .. and they're not finished. [cobirds] Kentucky Warbler at DeWeese Res., Custer Co.
I spent today birding in Custer Co. and had my first multiple warbler species day (six) of the year. The highlight was a KENTUCKY WARBLER found in the willow thicket below the dam at DeWeese Res. This thicket is almost impenetrable but I was able to see birds moving around in it by looking down from the cliff above it. Besides the KEWA, there were a dozen or so Yellow-rumps, a couple of Wilson Warblers and a FOY C. Yellowthoat here. This spot has produced several real gems in the past few years and it's a good place to check out during warbler migration. The reservoir is full and there is little exposed shoreline. Shorebirdwise there was a Spotted Sandpiper, an Avocet and several Wilson Phalaropes. Hundreds of ducks but nothing unusual. Rich Miller Canon City **A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above.
