Tony wrote out of "presumably of thousands, 19" when actually it was 19
out of 22 that favored the Mac.

Tony wrote they "wanted to run Windows on Mac" when nothing of the kind
was in the report. The mention of Windows was in the context of providing
a safety net just in case they had to run something that only ran on
Windows. While such software does exist we all know that is an unlikely.
There is plenty of Mac software to meet virtually any need. The only
problem software is the stuff specifically written to be incompatable and
that stuff is usually of very low quality.

I guess Tony thinks we are too stupid to notice the difference.

The way Tony spins the facts to his own bizarre view looks like a
political spinmeister, not like someone looking objectively at technical
facts.

Yes, I read the story. The numbers speak for themselves. Out of a
company presumably of thousands, 19 wanted to run Windows on Mac
hardware.

But the hilarious part is Tom's (and Dan's) spin on the whole thing,
making it sound like the Mac was taking over or something!

Again, what the story lacked was any kind of report on the Linux
group, only mentioning it briefly in passing. Don't change the subject
to a Mac OSX vs Vista debate, because I don't see Vista in my future
either, and will not be put in any kind of a position defending it.

Re: [CGUYS] MHTML: what's up with that?

2008-04-22 Thread Rev. Stewart Marshall

MHTML is a packaged format. It takes all components and makes them one page.

I use it all the time otherwise you get a web page and a directory to
save all the components.

All you need to do to open it with another web browser is right click
and do like you would with any other extension you want to open with
a particular program.

To make a PDF do like you normally would open it in your browser and
then click print and choose your PDF program.

I use PDF995

Re: [CGUYS] IBM Tests: 86% Ask to Keep the Mac

2008-04-22 Thread b_s-wilk

Tony,

Did you read the story?

You've said that you use photo editing and video software. I use photo
editing and video software for my work. I've used both Mac OS and
Windows for years. Not only does Mac OS X work more transparently than
Windows, Windows in emulation is better on a fast Mac than on a Windows
PC, especially when sharing files between OS's. Almost everything that
needs to be done in Photoshop or video software can be done in fewer
steps and faster on a Mac. Same for most other software, except--no
surprise--MS Office.

Linux also runs on Macs, natively and in emulation, but researchers have
to use the software that's written for their work. Given the choice
between our two Windows notebooks and my MacBook, I'll take the MacBook
any day.

Have you used a Mac recently? Ever? Do you use Vista? It's hideous. I've
"upgraded" to XP Pro, and Mac OS X. Use a Mac. Pocket the extra money
you have from being more productive, and use it for toys and fun. Keep
the PC for video games.

Betty

So, to phrase the results correctly, 100% chose Windows, 0% chose
Mac alone, and 86% chose to run Windows on a Mac.

Who cares. I'd be more interested in why none of them can get their
work done on a Linux laptop.

[CGUYS] Reformatting a drive for a Mac

2008-04-22 Thread David Turk
OK, I can get the drive to recognize on someone else's Mac (running OS 10.4.11,
same as mine). It still won't register on mine.

   david

A client gave me a Western Digital Passport external drive to copy file to.
It's formatted for Windows, & the files are on my laptop Mac. I can't get the
Mac to recognize the drive, much less re-format it for a Mac. I can re-format
on the PC, but still can't get the Mac to recognize it. tia.

Re: [CGUYS] OpenMac

That's why I said I didn't think anything was emulated, thus my question
about is there any hardware difference between the two.

I think it is the hardware configuration that is being 'emulated' with
the BIOS properly tweaked and some modification to the loading
procedure to OSX5. Take a look at
.
They used a modified version of OSX Panther and tweaked the BIOS. I
can't find it now but there are some configurations that didn't need
the altered OSX.

Re: [CGUYS] Arstechnica: Windows is dying

2008-04-22 Thread Snyder, Mark (IT Civilian)
The Ars article is well-written - by a former fanboy, too. M$ has made
their bed and the criticisms in the article ring true. My fortune 100
company is also talking about returning Macs to the corporate network.
We do not allow Vista on the network and no planned migration date has
been established. M$ is crashing under their own technical hubris and
sloppy work.

Thank you,

Mark Snyder
