Re: [CGUYS] Verizon Done with FIOS?
That is disturbing to me - I am in a copper only DSL area of Verizon's service. I was hoping to eventually get FIOS, as no cable vendor serves my area. Now I guess I will have to hope that LTE comes to my DirectTV eventually or that a cable company decides to serve this area. I am beginning to wonder exactly what business Verizon is in - they want to get out of copper and are abandoning FIOS, so the only consumer product left is their Wireless cellphone business. We've had connection issues with our DSL service for over two months. It disconnects at the same time almost every day for 5-90 minutes. Verizon is working on it. When the tech came to check wiring, switch, etc., he told me that the trunk line from town is fiber even though the neighborhood isn't connected, so we can't get FIOS. He told me that it's the same where he lives--fiber to the area, but neighborhoods not connected. He has DSL and DirecTV, just like we do. Verizon may be finished with the main FIOS installation, but they're not doing the last mile or so. Do neighborhoods and small towns have to get their own connections through cooperation of all the residents? Ha! Fat chance! [CGUYS] Verizon Done with FIOS?
At Verizon's earnings call, their CFO, Fran Shammo, sort of put a stake through the heart of FIOS. This article on DSL Reports http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Verizon-Confirms-New-Home-LTE-Service-116721?nocomment=1 summarizes thus: Verizon executives had been pretending they were pausing FiOS deployments while they improved uptake in already deployed markets. However, Shammo makes it clear the reality is FiOS deployment won't be unpaused -- because FiOS deployment is essentially over with the exception of already agreed franchise obligations. Steve I want to have a backup of the INSTALLER, not the backup of the program. Without the installer, vital files could be missing. The online installer will overwrite what I have without giving me the choice not to do that -- Apple has done this for years, BUT they used to give a choice of downloading an installer instead of online only. I don't want to waste time digging through a series of backups, delving into the invisible system files to find all the pieces to recover, when a decent company would simply provide an installer for their software. I can even download Android and Symbian software without having it installed automatically, overwriting my files. At least Mozilla gives us software installers--and Bugzilla. What's wrong with Apple? It seems to me as though Apple is headed in the direction of making most of their devices suitable for easy use and equally attractive for anyone from toddlers up to the elderly. Apple is also making their devices much less attractive for professionals who make a living with their computers and peripheral devices. It started with sealed computers, iPods and phones. What has always been a relatively simple process to change a battery or swap out a drive has become complicated to the point that we need special proprietary tools to open our devices to perform basic upgrades and repairs. We work on our own computers. We don't have time to send them out or wait for a tech to arrive. We have deadlines. The last straws are twofold. First, they broke Final Cut Pro, a very expensive downgrade/upgrade. Now they insist on installing the OS instead of permitting the user to do a very basic function. Was it REALLY necessary to discontinue Rosetta? When I finally downgrade to OS 10.7, it will cost me well over $1000 to upgrade all the important software that the new OS breaks, and more money to replace hardware that stops working--like my printer and scanner, perhaps even the interface with my camera. I like the OS, except 10.7, but the company is getting worse by the minute. The least that Apple can do is to admit that there are pros and basic consumers, and to treat them differently, treat them with respect. Have you ever tried to unlock a version 1, 2, or 3 iPhone? Apple refuses to do what every other phone manufacturers does routinely. Have you seen the odd screws they use on iPhone 4 and their notebooks? Why is my iPod touch glued together??? In iOS and OS X, for example, app upgrades are always voluntary. You have to open the App Store App, go to the Updates Pane, select the updates you want to upgrade, and confirm your choices with your AppleID. In OS X, you can just restore the old version of an app from a backup if the upgrade doesn't work out (Apple makes this easy by their policy of requiring app store apps to be entirely self-contained bundles). In iOS, it's a little more complicated and involves restoring the entire device from a backup, but it's still possible. Even most non-App Store apps don't automatically update themselves. Re: [CGUYS] Adobe update messed up printing PDF files
Wayne here is a suggestion try another PDF reader. Nuance and Foxit both have a decent PDF reader and I have had to use them on occasion when Adobes would not open a PDF file I received. I got an invoice from a vendor for a conference and I downloaded it repeatedly and Adobe would not open it. Tried it in Foxit and it came out fine? DOnt know why but this happens every now and then. I have a feeling it is the software they use to encode the PDF page. But try either one of those and see if it is the same. That works for most sounds , but in XP I still get the standard beep when I change volume or get a new email (in this case in an old Netscape mail program). Anyone know how to shut these sounds off ? First please note that this list for the most part has moved to Yahoo, note the message at the bottom of this reply. 2nd Netscape has not been supported for quite some time, and likely has lots of safety and security issues. Netscape can be easily replaced with the SeaMonkey suite offered by the folks at Mozilla, or alternatively just for email, Thunderbird the standalone email offering from Mozilla can also be used. Either the email component of Seamonkey or Thunderbird can import mail and settings from Netscape, so moving to either isn't likely to be a major issue. 3rd, it's been a long time since I last used Netscape in either Windows or Linux, but if I remember correctly, what sounds show up for events can be set under ToolsPreferences. Of course it could be that although you have no sounds selected in XP, you still have an event set in Netscape triggering said sounds. You'll have to play with both possibilities for a solution. *** ** THIS LIST HAS MOVED TO YAHOO** ** PLEASE JOIN THE DISCUSSION THERE ** ** Info at http://www.cguys.org/ ** ***

[CGUYS] New nomenclature
New Speak often amuses me. We have seen the term 'software' and 'application(s)' very quickly morph into the now common term 'app(s)' to describe any and all programs, a term that is also probably now falling into disuse in the computing world. I am now increasingly seeing the term refresh to describe not only computer screen redraws and why we use Lysol spray, but also being used to describe a hardware upgrade. In other words, one no longer 'upgrades' their computer or phone, but rather they 'refresh' whatever hardware they are desirous of replacing. So, who comes up with such new terminology or causes a term to quite suddenly become widely used by computer users lest they become fearful of being seen as illiterate in terms of computer new-speak? In that vein, why do so many seem to be so anxious to adopt these new-speak terms. I still prefer the terms 'software' or 'application' over 'app' if for no other reason that they seem more adult-like. I have no need for clipped speech a-la Twitter when communicating with others. I can easily pronounce most multisyllabic words. Steve *** ** THIS LIST HAS MOVED TO YAHOO** ** PLEASE JOIN THE DISCUSSION THERE ** ** Info at http://www.cguys.org/ ** ***
Re: [CGUYS] New nomenclature
This is how it's always been, new speech comes along with every generation and every previous one complains. I think as far as the term refresh goes, this has come about when handing out the new Apple message. The term is used to describe the new lineup of computers and laptops, I think they use it because Apple never comes out with completely new systems but just does small updates to existing lines. Apple is on the third refresh of the macbook pro I believe. Perhaps you are hanging around more Apple folks? I upgrade my system often, I'm around those who upgrade often...I know no one who uses the term refresh for upgrading or rebuilding their systems. Apps obviously has come about since the app store from Apple. And now Apple is pushing it out to not only their iphone/ipod users but their general imac population. I use the phrase in terms of phone applications, the computer literate I'm around know when I say apps I'm talking phone apps. 'Did you try that app I sent you?' They know I'm talking phones. 'Did you take a look at that program I emailed you about?' They know I'm referring to computer software. I'm not sure why you associate app with being a child...unless you know a lot of mac users. I believe that computer speak, except in terms of brand new products and types of devices and protocols, has remained pretty stable and not much changed since the mid-eighties. Now, quite suddenly in my estimation, I am seeing some newly popularized terms, or terms that are trying to become popularized, to describe things that have been around since the early days of computing. Apple has pushed new terminology upon the overall computing public, and I believe that to be a scheme to associate new terminology with the Apple brand. In other words, 'app' conjures up Apple's store. So perhaps Apple is running the entire new show these days, almost singly forming the computing lexicon of the future. But, I also feel that the Twitter effect, folks not having enough time, energy, attention span or available space to be able to fully express themselves, or perhaps not even caring if they do or not, is at play. Re: [CGUYS] New nomenclature
As I said, a new generation. Look at the tech we are talking about, the guys who invented it, popularized it are getting older, a new generation has come along and is using it's own nomenclature to describe the new and old/redone tech that surrounds them. Does the generation that came up in the 80's use the slang and exact nomenclature of those that came up in the 60's? It's quite suddenly to you probably because this new young generation is the one running the show now, they do the tech mags, they do the tech websites and youtube videos reviewing software and hardware. Look at the movers in the industry across the board, digg/reddit/twitter/facebook/google on and on, these are companies run by young people who have come of age after the heavy lifting of inventing the core base of our computer systems. You need to come to terms with something, Steve. I'm sorry to have to do this to you but someone has to get you ready for your future. Say it with me.. 'Get off my lawn!' I shall continue to use the term 'application' as opposed to 'app.' I shall also continue to use the term software or program and I will even distinguish types of software by stating if utility or productivity because I believe that to do so provides better clarification to the recipient. Just because Mr. Jobs says that 'software' no longer exists, that what used to be 'softwre' is now an 'app,' I will simply disagree with that self-serving assessment of his. [CGUYS] Assange prosecution in Sweden now in turmoil
It turns out that a lead Swedish police investigator in the alleged rape case against WikiLeaks internet leaker Julian Assange had personally known one of the two female defendants for as long as a year and a half prior to the accusations made against Mr. Assange were filed. In spite of that fact, this police investigator continued as a lead investigator in the case creating a situation that clearly smacks of impropriety at the least or willful misconduct at worst. At the very outset of the situation, the two women initially approached police only to find out if Mr. Assange could be forced to be tested for HIV. After this initial approach, one of the women, and it is not known which one, became convinced by someone within the police department that she should press rape charges against Assange. The Swedish police have thus far refused to reveal who in their department talked the woman into pressing charges. Most astute individuals, with this new information at hand, should not have a hard time figuring out who that person was. At any rate, this new information has created a serious legal problem for the prosecution and has again raised questions about the entire case against Assange and what it is really all about. Yes but I would not recommend it. Nero does have the capabilities to do both, if you have a full install of Nero. Often the freebies with a CD/DVD Burner does have some of these programs. Re: [CGUYS] Question re External HDD
Hi...I have a large external HDD connected to my desktop computer by a USB cable. I would like to use some of the data on the HDD on my Laptop. Can it be as simple as moving the USB cable from one machine to the other or am I missing something major here? If it works that easily, I can envision storing my photos and music on the HDD for use on both of my computers. As always, thanks in advance! Gail Miller Gail Although it's simple to move the USB drive from one computer to another, it's generally not a good idea to do that too frequently. Ports don't last forever, and ports on laptops aren't easy to replace. Yes, you can share the drive among many computers as long as it's formatted as FAT32 [also FAT 16?]. For Macs, sharing works with Samba [smb://--insert path or IP here-- ]. Other solutions are to leave the drive plugged into the desktop PC or hub and share it wirelessly with the laptop. Desktop must be running to share a drive. Better solution is to have a network drive, easy to access with its own IP address from both computers. Problem with using one drive to hold iTunes library for both computers is that the library will be missing when the drive is missing, so you'll have to create two versions of the library on each computer--one with the external drive, one without. Does your broadband modem have a USB port where the drive can be shared? Otherwise you'll need to put a bare drive into a NAS case and share it through a router/modem/switch. Next solution and cheaper than the NAS, could be best choice: get another drive, an extra 2.5-inch notebook drive. I picked up a WD 'My Passport' 500GB drive for $56 in November--it's very good, so far. For around the same price you can get a full-size external 3.5 1TB drive. You can sync both drives, or portions of each, wirelessly. Last solution only works if you have an old iPod. I have a 40GB Toshiba iPod hard drive in a very tiny USB enclosure. Fits in my pocket and is smaller than the Classic iPod. External cases for the 1.8-inch drives are hard to find. Saw some at Amazon a few weeks ago for $12. Can't help with that though. I got mine at w00t.com on a lucky day--drive and enclosure, $25. Betty *** ** THIS LIST HAS MOVED TO YAHOO** ** PLEASE JOIN THE DISCUSSION THERE ** ** Info at http://www.cguys.org/ ** ***
Re: [CGUYS] Wanted: reliable corded ear piece for cell phone
Seems like a minor thing but the corded ear pieces I keep buying for the cell phone keep going bad. Sick of being frustrated, so can anyone recommend a got one that might last a few months or at least a place to buy one? Also, speaking of frustration, any places to buy low-cost batteries for cordless phones that will last awhile? Or do you get what you pay for, basically? Have had hit or miss - mostly miss - on Ebay. Thanks Randall Which phone? Does it have a standard 3mm plug? 2mm? micro-USB? claw?? I have a device from Nokia that I really like. It has an On/Off button, mic, volume control, clip, but no headphones. You plug ANY headphones into it. I like my Sennheiser and Koss headphones. There are copies that may work OK. Mine is OEM and works well. I got it from DealExtreme. Headphones could be better, but mic is good. Works well when walking or running. This setup works well with phones that also have music so you can listen to your music with good stereo headphones and still be able to answer the phone. There are also short adapter cables you can buy for phones that have different ports. http://www.dealextreme.com/p/genuine-nokia-n95-stereo-headset-with-microphone-and-volume-control-24661 Buy two, just in case... All Nokia phones have a place at the bottom where you can attach a removable handstrap or lanyard. When driving alone, I usually wear my lovely red phone around my neck. The phone rings--I answer it and turn the loudspeaker on. Since the mic is at the bottom of the phone, the phone is upside down, and the stereo speakers on on the side, I can easily talk and listen completely 'hands-free'. Can you wear your phone? Doesn't have to a red phone. --- For batteries [mostly iPod], we've been using eforcity.com. They're an Amazon store and have different merchandise at Amazon and at their own site. Quality is OK. Sometimes cordless phone batteries don't recharge well if they're not placed exactly right on the cradle. Having to find specialty batteries for multiple phones led us to buy a set of four Panasonic DECT6 cordless phones that use standard AAA batteries, AND have good reception. I put Duracell 900 mAh batteries in the phones so they hold a charge almost twice as long as the OEM 550 mAh Panasonic batteries. Phone is 2005 version of this phone, http://is.gd/BoFbSp- [Amazon], which cost less! Oh this was an email from someone she knew for about 10 years. She left when her husband took a call in another locality last Summer. She was not about to send her money and thought it was the real person who she has tangled with before because of financial problems. The one sent to this list was unusual as it sent it to an email list, not an individual. If I understand it correctly, this is done by someone or something that hacks yahoo accounts and then uses their address books within Yahoo to send out these missives. I got two last year. One from a member of this or another similar list and then one from a church list I manage. These were individuals who I have known and have communicated with. The first one I was sorry for their problem but was not about to send money. The second one i had just seen an email from on the list a day or two before and they had not mentioned traveling. (and this person does a bit of it.) So I was suspicious right off. He then wrote me as manager of the list that his Yahoo account had problems. When my friend forwarded this one to me, I knew right off that it was a scam. One of these Stranded Traveller messages got posted to another computer email list I subscribe to, last year. The message was specifically written to appeal to the kind of person on the email list (women, in IT, many of them young.) At the time, I pointed out that the lack of specific information made the Stranded Traveller's appeal VERY suspicious, and suggested that if anyone on the list really wanted to help the Stranded Traveller, they should offer advice to her (such as, contact the U.S. consulate or embassy). AFAIK, no one sent money. I think they would have sent funds, if the appeal had been genuine; because people really do feel obliged to help when someone is in trouble. Helpfulness is just as much a part of human nature as the impulse to defraud. --Constance On Feb 15, 2011, at 9:19 PM, Stewart Marshall wrote: Oh this was an email from someone she knew for about 10 years. Re: [CGUYS] think i've been taken: replacement laptop keys
Judy Contact an electronics recycler. They get all kinds of computers and peripherals. When they can, they fix them, otherwise they sell parts, or or dismantle and recycle the parts into base components and elements. I just found a video card for one of our older computers for about 25% of the price for used ones online. I've found Wifi cards, optical drives, almost new mice, projectors. Call a few recycling companies. Maybe they have the full keyboard for the price of a few keys. Doesn't hurt to ask. Re: [CGUYS] think i've been taken: replacement laptop keys
I have no idea who you ordered from but if it was Ebay check and see if it was HK or China. If I want it fast, I find a domestic seller, and pay a little extra. Otherwise I bide my time, as shipping from there can take a month. Yes individual keys can be replaced. You need to be careful as there are usually little barbs or hooks on them that break easily. But you can replace individual keys and it is easier than opening up and replacing keyboards. So first check and see where you bought them from and see if it is overseas. Second contact the seller and ask what is going on. I ordered a book before Christmas did not arrive within 4 weeks.Contacted seller, he issued refund. Book promptly showed up on my door step. (Shipped media mail notoriously slow.) Stewart At 10:17 AM 2/13/2011, you wrote: I think I've been taken! Is there any such thing as replacement keys for laptop keyboards? My Sprint Samsung Moment is two versions back at Eclair 2.1.1 with little hope of an upgrade to Froyo 2.2 let alone Gingerbread. Apparently this is one either the manufacturer or the network depending on who thinks who should pay for the upgrade of older phones. I think though this will be a short sighted with people avoiding certain manufacturers due to their phones bad status with regard to upgrades. I like Samsung but if their phones are not getting upgrades that are feasible and HTC phones are getting those upgrades guess who is making is my next phone. This is one place where the Apple way is definitely the better way. All iPhones that are capable get the upgrade but there are some orphan iPhones out there. It's not Google..it's LG and Verizon. Unless Google is putting presure on Verizon/LG that we don't know about. I view Google as creating the base OS and putting it outside their garage in whatever builds there are and phone manufacturers driving by and picking up what they want. Some 1.6, some 2.2..some 2.1. I don't think Google gives a you know what which OS these vendors are using. The two phones that of course bypass that scenario are the nexus phones. That is possible, but there is not a phone being marketed right now that still uses 1.6 or 2.1 They are all being updated or pulled from the marker so it may be mutual. I know it is much simpler to be supporting only one level of OS on different platforms that a multiple levels of an OS over a bunch of platforms.
