Yes, could be a good idea, but rebuilding for older distro won't be
compatible unless we provide updated macros there too. I have been using
%x11prefix in XFree86 package actually.

BTW, %_Xlibdir is wrong on lib64 arches.

I think it's a good rule of thumb to *never* install an RPM that's
packaged for a different distribution.

Adam, this _is_ packaged for Mandrake 9.0, as is much stuff from PLF,
Ranger
 et al.

The risks in intalling it are that Mandrake doesn't put out updates,
and they
often require dependencies from contribs (not as widely available as
the main
distro and also not updated). However - in Texstar's case at least -
you can
use urpmi on the site to stay with the pace.

For Ranger's 8.2 stuff also ... I have just been too busy to get my
stuff rsyncing up for 9.0 to bother with urpmi, and there aren't really
that many RPMs there, since most of my stuff is going into MandrakeClub
(which also puts urpmi-able RPMs into the unsupported directory).

It's pretty sparse for 9.0 now (cdbakeoven, kopete, waimea, mjpegtools
and gfm at the moment), but quite a bit of stuff is in testing inside
MandrakeClub, which will make it out quite soon ...

Olivier, is the php script that actually generates the sources lists
available? I would like to set it up for use inside our university
(bandwidth outside is very expensive), as I already have mirrors of PLF
and jpackage, and would like to make it easier for people internally to
get the right contrib mirror (which is only accessible by that name from
inside).

Could you include it in your package?

Buchan

Don't add a cooker mirror to you machine unless you want to break it.

Did you read the errata dealing with this issue:
http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/errata.php3#urpmi

If you still have trouble, at least try posting the output of (as root)
# urpmq --sources scilab

My clean 9.0 box with a local contrib mirror gives this:

[root@bgmilne-thinkpad root]# urpmq --sources scilab
file://home/bgmilne/installs/mandrake/9.0/i586/Mandrake/RPMS2/scilab-2.6-3mdk.i586.rpm
[root@bgmilne-thinkpad root]# rpm -q scilab
package scilab is not installed
[root@bgmilne-thinkpad root]# urpmi scilab
installing
/home/bgmilne/installs/mandrake/9.0/i586/Mandrake/RPMS2/scilab-2.6-3mdk.i586.rpm

Preparing...
##
   1:scilab
##
[root@bgmilne-thinkpad root]#

So this is probably an installer bug, with the installer not updating
the source list correctly, as descibed in the errata.

[Cooker] [Bug 569] New: Installation freeze on Packard Bell iXtreme AMD 2000+

2002-11-25 Thread [Bug 569]
https://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=569

   Product: Installation
 Component: stage1
Summary: Installation freeze on Packard Bell iXtreme AMD 2000+
   Version: 1.759
  Platform: PC
OS/Version: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: P2
AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi, I have a Packard Bell iXtreme with:-

Explorer A (MS65-11) MB using the Via KM133A Chipset (Via VT8365A Northbridge
and Via VT686B Southbridge controllers).
AMD Athlon 2000+
256MB Ram
nVidia GForce 2 MX400
Blank Seagate IDE 40Gb disk
Pioneer DVD
CDRW
Intel 10/100 Nic.
USB Keyboard and Mouse

I am trying to install either LM8.2 (boxed set) or LM9.0 (downloaded Checksums
OK).

Following the manual I setup my BIOS and then booted off the CD. I then got to
the splash screen, pressed enter and the PC locks up. Nothing happens, blank
screen, I cannot CTRL-ALT-DEL, I have to cold boot to recover.

I tried the TEXT install and got: -
Loading CDROM.RDZ...
Loading VMLINUZ...Ready
Uncompressing Linux...OK, Booting Kernel
And then another lockup.

I have tried many options from the F1 screen such as nopentium, ide=nodma,
noauto, mem=nopentium, nobiospnp, etc... none help. I tried the Patch.pl file
for the K6 processor on the advice of the ESupport site and still no joy. I
don't think the kernel is booting to the point where it can see the floppy.

I have posted on Esupport and Mandrakeuser forums and no one can help, I have
tried several different boot images but still no joy.

I tried the ALT1 ALT2 kernels and after the install (no mouse in ALT1, no
Keybaord in ALT2) and re-boot the PC locks up again. Most of the hardware is
listed as unknown in the hardware screen (I clicked on the button on the
harddrive selection screen)

I don't think the boot kernel likes my PC. I also tried Redhat linux 8.0 and
got the same problem.

Any ideas?
Thanks
Paul.

[Cooker] [Bug 476] New: initscripts hoses wireless network

2002-11-25 Thread [Bug 476]
https://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=476

   Product: initscripts
 Component: initscripts
   Summary: initscripts hoses wireless network
   Version: 6.91-5mdk
  Platform: PC
OS/Version: All
Status: RESOLVED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: P1
AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

After updating initscripts to version 6.91-13.1mdk, wireless network no longer
works. After re-installing 6.91-10mdk net is back up.

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2002-11-13 06:26 ---
I've had the same problem and was able to fix it with the same solution.

I've got a D-Link DWL-650 that is using by default the wvlan_cs module.

What seems to fail is line 135 of /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/network-functions.

grep -q -E $1: +[09]+ +0. /proc/net/wireless return 0

This test fails as the contents of my /proc/net/wireless is:

Inter-| sta-| Quality| Discarded packets | Missed
face | tus | link level noise | nwid crypt frag retry misc | beacon
  eth1: 92. 245. 154. 0 0 0 0 180

As you can see, the final part of that grep test above (the +0. ) is breaking
it. It's the oposite of what it should be... you want to check the signal
quality and have it anything other than 0.

Hope this helps. Please fix this and issue another update. Thank you.

Brandon Darbro ([EMAIL PROTECTED])

Are these going to not need this in future, or are the ones that don't
need --embedded going to need it in future?

Comments??

Does this lay to rest the rewrite in qt/KDE issues?

I think we should add this warning to all aspell dictionnary specfiles..

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2002-11-25 20:07 ---
The same happens for me.
I found the probable reason.

Issuing the reboot/poweroff command as a user, /usr/bin/reboot is invoked which
is a softlink to consolehelper and reboot/poweroff is performed via some console
magic.

However, GNOME seems to call /sbin/reboot, which gives me the error message
reboot: must be a superuser in ~/.xsession-errors and reboot/poweroff fails.

I think the session manager should call /usr/bin/reboot or poweroff, and that is
the bug...

Yes, could be a good idea, but rebuilding for older distro won't be

rebuilding for older distro's would'nt be any more problem than just
adding those macro's to the .spec file, would it?

We could keep the macro's in the spec for at least until 9.1 is relea-
sed. I mean people that want to rebuild srpms on 9.0 or 8.2 usually know
what they are doing and I wouldn't want to break that.

We could later on let them patch the macros with something like:

#!/bin/sh
if [ -z `grep _Xprefix /usr/lib/rpm/macros` ]; then
cat EOF/usr/lib/rpm/macros

%{_Xprefix} /usr/X11R6

Yes it should be set.

using the Mandrake menu system then they are in X. :)

2 ) since this is only in french, how should i deal with this ?

Not sure on this one. I would assume that it's safe for the menu
entries to be in French if the package only contains French
documentation.

Is there a convention for the name ?

Not really.

Is there any change to get it in contrib ?

Can't say for sure without looking at your spec. Generally just upload
it into incoming on ftp.linux-mandrake.com and send an email to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and this list. Lenny will make any changes that
are necessary to accept it.

3 ) they also offers documentation in pdf.
is there something special to use it ?
For the menu, I do not have a var to check for a prefered reader.
I cannot say that kghostview is a dependancy, since people can wish to use
 ghostview, xpdf and so on.
Is there a way to say it needs a pdf reader ?

I would provide the files but not link them up from the menu...

last thing, the mandrake rpm howto say I must use a xpm for icon, and rpmlint
complains if it is not a png.
 so, there is a bug somewhere,no ?

Howto is out of date. PNG is the proper format.

You're missing the point. I already have a --max-delete. The damage
isn't that it's deleting files. In fact I noticed it because of the
max-delete since RPM wouldn't remove the RPMS directory and replace it
with the symlink.

The problem is that because of a simple path modification rsync
automatically redownloaded 1.3GB of files that I already had. The only
way to avoid that when a path rename is done is to have prior warning
and to rename it by hand.

There's absolutely no reason why prior to this change being made that a
post couldn't have been made on this list give us the exact time the
change would be made.

Until all the RPMS in contrib/RPMS get trashed and the directory gets

But it doesn't matter to your situation. :)

hmm.. well i can't say i *did* something to encounter that issue,
i simply bumped into it months ago while i was testing a bucketload
of TTF fonts all over the system.. i don't recall ever updating the
box in question (other than installing kde3), so it was probably stock
freetype, and the s p a c i n g p r o b l e m seemed to
get worse or much worse, according to the font i chose.

The most problematic was gnome-terminal. after some time i gave up
trying to fix it... the last time i tried to use it, it would create
a window so wide it didn't fit in the screen. (1024x768 screen)

Obviously not many people experienced this in 8.2, so it's possible
that it showed up only under certain circumstances that i'm
not able to guess..

[Cooker] Threading of Bug Emails in Mutt

2002-11-25 Thread Ben Reser
Since we still don't have a References header to do it for us... Those
of you using mutt may want to use something like this in your .muttrc:

set reply_regexp='^(((re|r e|RE|Re|aw|antw.|antwort):[ \t]*)|(\[Cooker\]

As long as you aren't doing strict threading it will group the Bugzilla

Yes, could be a good idea, but rebuilding for older distro won't be
compatible unless we provide updated macros there too. I have been
using %x11prefix in XFree86 package actually.

BTW, %_Xlibdir is wrong on lib64 arches.

hehe, but you stole it from me;)

rebuilding for older distro's would'nt be any more problem than just
adding those macro's to the .spec file, would it?

We could keep the macro's in the spec for at least until 9.1 is relea-
sed. I mean people that want to rebuild srpms on 9.0 or 8.2 usually know
what they are doing and I wouldn't want to break that.

We could later on let them patch the macros with something like:

#!/bin/sh
if [ -z `grep _Xprefix /usr/lib/rpm/macros` ]; then
cat EOF/usr/lib/rpm/macros

%{_Xprefix} /usr/X11R6
blahblahblah
blah
EOF
else
echo Your macros already seem to be patched 2

hmm, that one looks dirty, if it should modify a static file like that,
it should rather be done via an rpm upgrade
(or did I misunderstand?)

At any rate my question is... does it encourage people to put things in

hmm, I think this is what I meant to cover with point 5 of the section I wrote
in the Fontdeuglification howto:

5 . My fixed fonts do not appear or look _very_ wrong in the KDE konsole or
similar programs!

I noted that somehow a lot of fixed font do not tell Xft that they are fixed,
and thus, mono spaced. Therefore only a part of the font is displayed. We can
manually set the spacing for these fonts (this assumes you have fixed aliased
with mono as in question 3 above):

 match
any family == mono
  edit
spacing = mono;

Note that this assumed fixed is aliased with mono! (otherwise replace the
first mono with fixed.
I do not had the time to try what is the correct way of doing this in the new
fontconfig, but I'm sure you can find out:)

Not sure on this one. I would assume that it's safe for the menu
entries to be in French if the package only contains French
 documentation.
Well, yes, of course.
but, for a normal program, I must do something to add it to
/usr/share/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES/menu-messages.mo

is there no way to do it in the package ?

I cannot say that kghostview is a dependancy, since people can wish to
use ghostview, xpdf and so on.
Is there a way to say it needs a pdf reader ?

I would provide the files but not link them up from the menu...
But, to be clean, kghostview and others should provides something, like
mozilla and w3m provides webclient.
and, well; somehow, a variable for this...

I have not tested yet (The freezed Packard Bell iMedia is not my own machine)

Good luck.
