The developer of exiftool has made a GUI for exiftool which supports
among other things GPS data: https://hvdwolf.github.io/jExifToolGUI/

The easiest way is to wait to connect the camera until Darktable is
started and in case you need to work with the camera in another program
then disconnect the camera before starting Darktable.

The problem is that connecting a device to a program is like bluetooth
- when one device are connected connections to other devices are
  blocked. In technical terms these connections are 1 - 1.

What does the following command show?
$ darktable --version
this is darktable 4.2.0
copyright (c) 2009-2022 johannes hanika
https://github.com/darktable-org/darktable/issues/new/choose

compile options:
  bit depth is 64 bit
  normal build
  SSE2 optimized codepath enabled
  OpenMP support enabled
  OpenCL support enabled
  Lua support enabled, API version 9.0.0
  Colord support enabled
  gPhoto2 support enabled
  GraphicsMagick support enabled
  ImageMagick support disabled
  libavif support enabled
  libheif support enabled
  libjxl support enabled
  OpenJPEG support enabled
  OpenEXR support enabled
  WebP support enabled

If you does not see this: libjxl support enabled but libjxl support
disabled instead then your version of DT is built without support for
jxl. Since jxl is an optional feature this is not unlikely.

Since the darktable database is stored in a sqlite3 database you can
manually make a backup if you have sqlite3 installed. Darktable uses
two databases: data.db and library.db.

A quick way is the following (darktable needs not be shutdown when you
do it)

sqlite3 library.db ".backup 'library_backup.db'"
sqlite3 data.db ".backup 'data_backup.db'"

  Distro: Debian Sid and Buster (coming stable), Ubuntu 20.04, Linux
  Mint 20
  Desktop: Cinnamon and Gnome (The reason for Cinnamon and Gnome is it

Arch:
  Current Arch (would properly also work on Manjaro)
  Desktop: Cinnamon and Gnome (The reason for Cinnamon and Gnome is it

For those using a workstation without Bluetooth the following bluetooth
dongle works flawlessly with all of the above - I have only tested with
kernel 5.8, 5.9 and 5.10 so default kernel (5.4) supplied with Ubuntu
20.04 and Linux Mint 20 remains for others to test
 - LogiLink Bluetooth 4.0 Adapter, USB 2.0 Micro, Class 1
https://www.2direct.de/audio-video/bluetooth-wireless-adapter/2520/bluetooth-4.0-adapter-usb-2.0-micro-class-1

What is important here is the chip which is CSR / BC8510 and beware
that a lot of cheap Chinese dongle is around with fake CSR / BC8510
chips which is a hit and miss:
https://patchwork.kernel.org/project/bluetooth/patch/a36966dd-677a-916c-9a03-c82b4e980...@gmail.com/

In syslog you will see this for:
Fake: CSR: Unbranded CSR clone detected; adding workaround
True: Product: CSR8510 A10

PS. Battery level for the Wacon tablet is available in the power
manager applet or from CLI: upower -i
/org/freedesktop/UPower/devices/tablet_wacom_battery_0
See attached screenshot.

When I have tested in DT I will return with more info.

This is wrong since the kernel will not load the proprietary Nvidia
blobs as the are currently. My Nvidia version is 450.80 and the opencl
libraries as rejected to be loaded by the kernel. The opencl library
will not be able to be loaded until Nvidia fixes it and until this is
done your only option is to revert to kernel 5.8.

You probably forgot that in kernel 5.9 there is no support for the
proprietary part of the Nvidia driver due to licensing issues so the
dkms build disables, among other parts, the support for opencl. Nvidia
has announce a solution ultimo November.

Until Nvidia releases a solution your only option is to use the 5.8
kernel

Made a very strange discovery. If I remove my darktablerc file and
starts darktable without any darktablerc file everything works as it
should. When I close darktable it automatically generates a darktablerc
file which presumably should mean that next time I start darktable it
should behave the same way as it did when I closed it last time but
next time I start darktable it works as described in the bug report!

I find this very weird.

Found the issue, I think:
Debian sid has transitioned to LLVM-10 are therefor opencl is also
transitioned to LLVM-10. Darktable's opencl support only works with
LLVM-3.6 to LLVM-9 since compiling darktable's opencl support with
LLVM-10 shows the same error.

Instead of SQlite DT could transition to firebird
(https://www.firebirdsql.org/en/features/)
It is also using same approach as SQLite by embedding the database as a
file in the file system but it is geared towards multi user/application
support and as SQLite supported on all OS's where DT runs.

It seems to be a problem with my own compiled version since the
official Debian sid 3.0.2 identifies the lens. The difference between
the 2 versions are that the Debian packaged version of Darktable 3.0.2
is compiled against lensfun-1 while my own version from Darktable git
is compiled against lensfun-2?

53,002052 [dev_pixelpipe] took 10,305 secs (27,939 CPU) processed `tone

Those matches mine:

30,857945 [dev_pixelpipe] took 6,512 secs (75,135 CPU) processed `tone

The reason the amount for such long time is that the GPU run out of
memory and had to be processed by the CPU.

Your specs:

 DEVICE_VERSION:   OpenCL 1.2 CUDA

CPU: AMD Ryzen 1700 overclocked to 3.8 GHz
Memory: 32 GB DDR 4 at 3200 MHz

So using a less capable GPU than you I am able to do
39,681519 [dev_process_export] pixel pipeline processing took 38,916

And you are able to do
53,785899 [dev_process_export] pixel pipeline processing took 53,032

That is more or less 20% faster than you. The only reason to this is
that you are using a very old version of the Nvidia driver (390.116)
while I am using (430.64). I suspect that if you use the same Nvidia
driver version that me you would be able to cut between 20 and 30
seconds of your processing time.

Nice to hear. You definitely should not use multiple GPU unless both
cards are identical. If they are not identical you should prioritize
the cards this way:
1) Fastest/best GPU
2) GPU with the most on-board memory

So if darktable -d opencl shows:
[opencl_init] device 0 `WX7100`
[opencl_init] device 1 `Vega 56`

This means:
1) OpenCL scheduling profile -> default
2) opencl_device_priority !WX7100,*/!Vega 56,*/Vega 56,*/Vega 56,*

Above means: exclude using WX7100 for center image, exclude Vega 56 for
preview, export prefer Vega 56, thumbnails prefer Vega 56.

Following the above to exclude WX7100 completely:
opencl_device_priority !WX7100,*/!WX7100,*/!WX7100,*/!WX7100,*
or exclude Vega 56 completely
opencl_device_priority !Vega 56,*/!Vega 56,*/!Vega 56,*/!Vega 56,*

Anybody on the list with experience in using dual GPU?

I have a spare rx 470 4GB which could be used for the purpose.
Remembering that the second PCIe-x16 slot only runs in x4 modus with

Benchmarks and performance stats are welcome.

In your darktablerc file you could try change default setting for these
options:
opencl_memory_headroom=550
opencl_memory_requirement=768

See also 'opencl_avoid_atomics' here:
https://www.darktable.org/usermanual/en/darktable_and_opencl_amd.html

The opencl_memory_headroom is of special concern since this setting
controls how much memory darktable will reserve for other programs and
device drivers requiring GPU memory. As can be seen above I have
slightly increased the setting.

I have tried opening the file in DT 2.4.4 (Debian)

[rawspeed] (DSC_5978.NEF) void

176: Corrupt Huffman. Code value 92 is bigger than 16

[temperature] failed to read camera white balance information from

From OS:
$ file /tmp/DSC_5978.NEF
/tmp/DSC_5978.NEF: TIFF image data, little-endian, direntries=28,
height=120, bps=352, compression=none, PhotometricIntepretation=RGB,
manufacturer=NIKON CORPORATION, model=NIKON D750,
orientation=upper-left, width=160

One of my raw files:
$ file Pictures/2018-06-20/DSC_1685.NEF
Pictures/2018-06-20/DSC_1685.NEF: TIFF image data, big-endian,
direntries=28, height=0, bps=0, compression=none,
PhotometricIntepretation=RGB, manufacturer=NIKON CORPORATION,
model=NIKON D600, orientation=upper-left, width=0

See the difference: DSC_5978.NEF: little-endian vs DSC_1685.NEF:
big-endian

Seems for some reason DT fails if raw file is having little-endianess.

1) Lossless is an option
2) The DNG format also specifies a non-raw format called Linear DNG.
See http://www.barrypearson.co.uk/articles/dng/linear.htm

If any of the above is in actual play then your results are to be

To the DT developers: What we kind off narrowed the Arch problem down
to is that whenever Arch makes major upgrades of libc and glib the
transition between old and new versions sometimes is not consistent
across all libraries resulting in missing runtime references til

2018-02-08 Thread Michael Rasmussen
Hi Tanja,

I have posted this to the list as well so that other readers can follow
the discussion.

The reason behind the older version of the library on your installation
is because you a running latest LTS version from Ubuntu while I am
running Debian Unstable which means the version of my libraries are the
latest versions that are not considered experimental. But since you
have the library installed this is not the reason for your problem.

I sometimes sees this error as well if I have Google Chrome open.
Closing Google Chrome and running 'atrous' on gpu succeeds.

I have not been able yet to test whether enabled hardware optimization

CPU AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1045T Processor
GPU GeForce GTX 1050
RAM 16GB

$ darktable-cli bench.SRW test.jpg --core --disable-opencl -d perf

$ darktable-cli bench.SRW test.jpg --core -d perf -d opencl

OpenCL can compensate for the lack of a 'descent' processor.

Since cores and threads along with GPU are the most important part when
doing post processing everybody seems to agree on that AMD Ryzen is
where you currently gets the most bang for the bug.
An example of an in-depth build of a Ryzen 7 system and a comparison

Disclaimer: Pure speculation.
If DT uses timestamps to evaluate whether a sidecar file has changed
since last run and if the two computeres involved does not have a
synchronized clock in general and more specific between the two changes
could be lost.

You also need to factor in the CPU. To gain the advantage of the most
expensive and superior GPU's you most also have the most expensive and
superior CPU's (i7 or Ryzen 7) so for most people with ordinary
equipment a 1050ti will max out their equipment's potential.

You should also remember that most of the benchmarks you read on the
net is gaming benchmarks which differs the workload of image processing
to a great extend. Reading eg. the conclusion from this benchmark
(https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Photoshop-CC-2017-NVIDIA-GeForce-GPU-Performance-899/)
shows there is little gain given after GTX 1050 and comparing this to
the price difference you surely get the best price performance ration
by sticking with GTX 1050.
