At my system: 1364 /usr/share/doc/xxx directories with a README file (seems fine to me) 3591 /usr/share/doc/xxx directories without a README file (many of that packages sure have manpages and/or info files) I think it would be a improvement that README file be present at each package, at least providing a mininum info about the package / program / library. i know it is a utopy, but would be beatiful an unified README file with sections like: What it is? Why it is installed? Is it configurable? What manpage or doc to read? Links to webs I know, it is Debian, you want, you can start to do the work ... It is only a suggestion that would be Debian better for me. Sometimes I says , oh no, another /usr/share/doc/xxx package only with changelog (necessary for me too!) and license (perfect too!!) ! Where could I learn about what is that library or that program! ? i know how to search manpages, and search on the internet and search at https://packages.qa.debian.org/common/index.html ... but it would be useful to have a nice README for every package. Well I hope this mail not disturb anybody, it is only a simple idea Regards!

Re: jessie install cd no network
Thanks, the problem is with realtek pci and pci express ethernet cards. I will try to find the module to add in /lib/firmware in the installation cd to see if it works. the weird thig is that after installing, the intalled debian uses the cards perfectly (but debian installer) does not recognize them. The solution would be to make debian installer cd to use the same kernel that installs, but I don't know how to do it. Thanks, Javier. jessie install cd no network
Hello, I downloaded the Jessie install cd and added a preseed file to automatically install some packages, but running the install cd does not recognize the realtek network cards, telling me that no network hardware was detected. If I install it in a Virtualbox machine (with a phisical disk mapped) and then I boot with that disk, the network cards work perfectly. the cards I have are: javier@javier-System-Product-Name:~$ lspci | grep -i ethernet 04:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 06) 06:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8100/8101L/8139 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter (rev 10) How can I make the debian installer to automatically boot these modules in the kernel? Thanks, Javier.

[debian-user] thunderbird proxy env. vars for socks
Hi, I'm familiar with proxy envirnoment variables such as (both lower and upper case versions): use_proxy soap_use_proxy http_proxy https_proxy ftp_proxy rsync_proxy no_proxy all_proxy Thunderbird at least pay attention to some of them, and honestly, before I haven't needed anything else. However, inside the company, I need to setup manually under TB: SOCKS Host: <...> Port: <...> As SOCKS v5. Where the socks host is the same as the other proxy hosts, but its socks port must be different than the rest. I don't use any DE, but I have some automation through bash+xinitrc which depends on how to set the env. vars, so that I only need to set on TB/FF "use system proxy settings". I've tried several possible env. vars (both lower and upper case) like: socks_proxy socks_server socks_version smtp_proxy="socks5://:" So far I haven't been able to get any possitive results. Does any one know how I might be able to set socks for TB through env. vars? Thanks, -- Javier

Let's go and see a smaller transition, so we can understand it. I chose for example librabbitmq transition [1] Maintainer or maybe some script (that is an "auto-transition"), define which packages will be rebuilded on such transition: Affected: .depends ~ /\b(librabbitmq4|librabbitmq1)\b/ Good: .depends ~ /\b(librabbitmq4)\b/ Bad: .depends ~ /\b(librabbitmq1)\b/ That mean that if a package has a depend on librabbitmq1 it will have a red check, because it is still depending on a older build-dep. If the package has been build with librabbitmq4 it will show a green check. In this case, the first dependency level is librabbitmq (itself), and then the second level are the packages which need to be build with the packages that are on the first dependency level. If there were an third level, the packages on this third level would need some of the packages on second level to be built. You can see which build depends have a package with apt-cache showsrc xxx. I'm sure debtree could help to visualize the transition, but after play two minutes with it, i did not sucess to put an example here. You can found more info about transitions on wiki [2] I hope that help. Regards, [1] https://release.debian.org/transitions/html/auto-librabbitmq.html [2] https://wiki.debian.org/OngoingTransitions

You mean, you are willing to use bloated gnome and/or kde apps? Any ways, an alternative is to have sw that mounts your camera, and then sw to view images once their storage is mounted. If you don't use gnome, neither gvfs (which automates mounting), what I recommend for mounting usb camera storage is "gphotofs", which can as well be auto mounted/unmounted in combination with "autofs". Well, despite flash plugin suggested by others (which is stuck at an old flash version), you can try instead the freshplayerplugin [1][2], which wraps chromium-pepper-flash (part of the chrome browser [3], but some non-free packages extract it from there and make it available without chrome). _netdev with wpa_supplicant dependency doesn't work at shutdown
Hello, I'm trying to solve my own reported bug [1] When I add a curlfs fstab entry via wifi (wpa_supplicant), it get mount at boot, but it does not umount when system is halting / at shutdown. Wpa_supplicant stop before than curlftpfs umount the mount point (xx.mount). I have been playing with "After / Before /Requires" parameters both, but I'm getting tired .. I'm not able to make it work :( What I have tried: 1. Modify fstab-generator , so xx.mount depends on : 1.1 network-online.target 1.2 wpa_supplicant.service 2. Modify wpa_supplicant.service, so depends on: 2.1 xx.mount 2.2 remote-fs.target Do you have any hint about this issue ? How can I get it working ? How can I say to systemd about not stop wpa_supplicant until xx.mount is umounted ?? At halt/poweroff/reboot manpage : DESCRIPTION halt, poweroff, reboot may be used to halt, power-off or reboot the machine. I think it should be better explain what is exactly halt and which is the difference with poweroff As I understand, power off is like you press the power button some seconds. Halt (as current behaviour) is stop all process but pid 1 There is the "-p" switch to halt, or the "--halt" switch to poweroff, so halt can power off the machine or power off can stop all process in an ordered way Regards, -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". As soon as I > get the chance I'll read #616689 and try to investigate it further on > this machine. Currently it only boots through this forced activation > method you taught me. This thread remember me what happens to me last week: I had a grml installation (which I expect to have a behaviour exactly like a debian system now that I installed all the packages that I needed from debian sid). That installation was without lvm, all contents to one partitioin. So the last week I wanted to change that installation and move to lvm style. So I backed data, created partitions, and tried to update grub / etc/fstab .. from chroot I knew about #741342 Debian Bug, so I workaround about it with GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_UUID="true" hack The result of that movement was a unbootable system (grub rebooted the system) After researching grub or kernel parameters, like panic, I find about where was the error: initramfs generated inside the chroot was failed and lsinitramfs list an empty initramfs empty (after research I hit another bug [1]) Compressing initramfs generated, lsinitramfs show only this file: kernel/x86/microcode/GenuineIntel.bin So finally I copied an initramfs from other sid machine, and it worked. Then I tried to regenerate initramfs from scratch in the machine, and like I didn't know about [1] bug, I think it was erroneus. I didn't report any bug because it was a grml system when it was installed. Then I tried to install dracut (which is an alternative to initramfs-tools) and it worked like a charms. lsinitr* worked again, and I could boot without any problem So, how do you extract your initramfs content ? There is a patch at [1], but it is not being accepted by the maintainer. (I guess dd and offset commands illustrated at the bug will work) I will try to return to initramfs-tools and see if the generated initramfs is working (like it seems) Regards, [1] https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=717805 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". In the man page: BACKGROUND SETTING feh can also be used as a background setter. Unless you pass the --no-fehbg option, it will store the command line necessary to set the background in ~/.fehbg, so to have your background restored every time you start X, you can add "eval $(cat ~/.fehbg)" to your X startup script (like ~/.xinitrc). Note that all options except --bg-tile support Xinerama. For instance, if you have multiple screens connected and use e.g. --bg-center, feh will center the image on each screen. You may even specify more than one file, in that case, the first file is set on screen 0, the second on screen 1, and so on. Use --no-xinerama to treat the whole X display as one screen when setting wallpapers. --bg-center Center the file on the background. If it is too small, it will be surrounded by a black border --bg-fill Like --bg-scale, but preserves aspect ratio by zooming the image until it fits. Either a horizontal or a vertical part of the image will be cut off --bg-max Like --bg-fill, but scale the image to the maximum size that fits the screen with black borders on one side. --bg-scale Fit the file into the background without repeating it, cutting off stuff or using borders. But the aspect ratio is not preserved either --bg-tile Tile (repeat) the image in case it is too small for the screen --no-fehbg Do not write a ~/.fehbg file I've used just "--bg-fill" and it works quiet well for me. -- Javier. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". BTW, .Xresources is not a initialization script, its purpose is to specify the X applications resources, for example the ones I have for xautolock and xlockmore: % 'grep' 'X.*ock' ~/.Xresources Xautolock.locker: xlock Xautolock.time: 5 XLock.mode: blank XLock.lockdelay:0 XLock.timeout: 25 XLock.background: black XLock.foreground: red XLock.mousemotion: on This is pretty independent upon the WM, so I prefer to set this in .Xresources, than any other way... Actually it works on other distros the same way it does for debian, :-) That's the part of its beauty... I use it on debian and arch, and I have also used it on sourceMage essentially without variations. XDM also works the same way with .xsession on all distros I've tried. So nothing of this has been deprecated yet. &g

The point is, X doesn't even > start in this case. Have you tried not having your .xssesionrc at all? Does it provide the same result to you as with .xsessionrc? I've been using .xinitrc and .xsession with plain fluxbox (no DE), to work with plain startx or xdm (other DMs as well such as slim and wdm), and I have had no problems for around 10 years (well I no longer use slim neither wdm now a days)... For setting resources I use .Xresources and .Xdefaults. Any ways if you look at the startx man page, you'll see at the bottom the configuration files. It only talks about .xinitrc, and .xserverrc (not .xsessionrc), and I would not play around with .xserverrc, the one in /etc works just fine. There's even an example in there where they call twm as the WM... If there's no WM, and you're not using a DE, then Xorg will start and die. Same thing with startx. Now, this is the reason I recommended, to reduce maintaining several initialization files, just provide execute permissions for .xinitrc, and then make a link from it to .xsession. Make sure you call the WM as the last thing on .xinitrc, "exec startfluxbox" for example, and don't worry about .Xresources and .Xdefaults yet. BTW, startx does not use .xession at all... Can you provide the .xinitrc you're trying for your startx attempts? As a fallback, before calling your WM, you can also call xterm, or some other term, to keep Xorg up while the term is up... However it might be you "xrdb" them from .xsessionrc, though .Xdefaults the old days was supposed to beloaded automatically without being loaded through xrdb. Now, to make both startx and xdm (and other DMs using .xsession) what is required is to have .xinitrc with execute permissions (.xsession requires them for for several DMs if I recall correctly since it gets executed), and then create a link from .xinitrc to .xsession. Also, from the old days, .Xdefaults can be a link to .Xresources, so the resources loaded by default are the .Xresources. Hmm, but you omitted swapping. Using your same link, you'll see that you can use whole RAM, and that doesn't mean oversizing, specially with the OP swap size... First some more data form the link: tmpfs puts everything into the kernel internal caches and grows and shrinks to accommodate the files it contains and is able to swap unneeded pages out to swap space. It has maximum size limits which can be adjusted on the fly via 'mount -o remount ...' ... If you compare it to ramfs (which was the template to create tmpfs) you gain swapping and limit checking. ... Since tmpfs lives completely in the page cache and on swap, all tmpfs pages currently in memory will show up as cached. It will not show up as shared or something like that. Further on you can check the actual RAM+swap use of a tmpfs instance with df(1) and du(1). So yes, one needs to be careful, not to oversize your tmpfs. That's completely true, but the limit is not physical RAM, it is actually RAM+Swap, as I mentioned before. On this thread, it is asked about how to got with huge files to be handled by tmpfs, well, debian still gives the option to set /tmp as a regular partition for example, but if you also have enough swap space, then by setting the right tmpfs size, you can still get away with it through tmpfs. Actually in this case I suggested 2g or even 3g for tmpfs, which was discarded because it sounded dangerous at first by looking only at RAM, and not considering at all the available swap, which in my mind and experience is a mistake. > > The OP would likely be far better off simply mounting /tmp on his root > filesystem as was always done in the past. I don't agree. Actually the OP has plenty of swap, so he could get away with 2g or 3g of tmpfs with no risk. > Application developers > writing to /tmp aren't expecting memory speed transfers of such files > because of the traditional placement of /tmp. But this is opinion based on self experience only. And I'm sorry to reply even though it has been asked to close the thread, but I believe there's need to realize that we're not talking just about RAM. And on small RAM boxes, things can still work with enough swap, and for them there was a rule of thumb that said one needed to double at least the RAM size, and one can play then with total of 3 times RAM size... The same way people is recommending disk partitions, one could recommend increase of swap space, whether through more swap partitions or even swap files (there's no need to create new partitions for swapping). And one can always change whatever wanted... If no value is provided here, the kernel default > # will be used. > TMPFS_SIZE=20% See, this is as you wish. This particular setting is the maximum for ALL of the tmpfs space. Kind of the default if nothing else is specified. You might not touch this if you don't want. So I would not be afraid of using 100% of RAM here. Though if you feel like it's too agressive, you can set something different. When using %, the percentage is with respect to RAM. I would recommend you also looking at swappiness setting (vm.swappiness), :-) When you use absolute sizes, those sizes can go beyond RAM, as long as they fit into RAM+Swap, that's why I mentioned swappiness, though a bit off topic. > > # TMP_SIZE: maximum size of /tmp > # > # No default size. > TMP_SIZE= This is also as per your needs. You might want to use all of the RAM reducing if you'd like other tmpfs areas such as /run and /run/lock, plus some margin. Or you could use some other heuristic, more or less conservative. I would use half the RAM if I want to be conservative, :-). And if agressive, then whole RAM, hoping to swap when in need (I usually have in swap same amount of RAM). You can google around this, and you can find the following information useful (though not debian): https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fstab#tmpfs Notice there's no restriction to go beyond RAM size again, since you can always swap. Finally, you do not need to touch /etc/default/tmpfs if you don't want to. Just set the entry in your /etc/fstab as I mentioned previously, kind of: tmpfs /tmptmpfs nodev,nosuid,relatime,size=2G 0 0 Just make sure the size you use doesn't exceed RAM+Swap... > > Now my questions are :- > > a. I think I provided enough hints, but from your setting: 2g RAM + 4.6g Swap, I would go with the 2g, or even 3g... It doesn't mean you'll be using all that amount of tmp area, it means you can load through vim a 2g or a 3g file if you'd like, :-) Vim by default loads in /tmp... > b. Or how many would you consider critical mass to make things change? To me it's just not possible to provide defaults satisfying all users. The important thing for the distro is to make sure to provide options so the user can tweak the system as he/she wants/needs. Not that it will be perfect by default for his/her needs. And this is already the case for this tmpfs thing. Moreover, you can shut debian settings off, and use fstab if you'd like, as follows: tmpfs /tmp tmpfs nodev,nosuid,relatime,size=2G 00 Current setting is not the most fortunate for some (neither for me), but users still have the ability to configure as they wish, which BTW can serve way better than any default now, or even in the future. >> You can always configure as you wish. It is not elegant, but you could remove pdf from mimetypes that manage gimp (/usr/share/applications/gimp.desktop) and rebuild the mime database (update-mime-database) Of course this is not the best solution, when you upgrade your system you will get again the same behaviour There is a bug (closed) [1] with that issue, maybe should be reassigned to another package? This comes with a framebuffer driver which enables native resolution on the console. KMS also allows faster VT switching and mode changes. Enabling KMS may break X.org drivers that are not KMS-ready, for instance radeonhd or vesa. In case of trouble KMS can be disabled with the 'nomodeset' kernel command line parameter, or by editing /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf. - install driver and disable KMS. >> which graphics card is installed (radeon model)? > ATI Technologies Inc RV670 AGP [Radeon HD 3850] >> how many monitors are installed? > 2 monitors > >> does de following commands: >> >> * disable GDM to no start -- update-rc.d -f gdm3 disable >> * start a computer and login in console with a normal user >> * type 'startx' > Is the purpose to see if the problem persist even after not loading > gnome, as to find if if it is a driver problem? > >> CTRL+ALT+F1 works? > After starting x without GDM? > > -- > Met vriendelijke groeten, > > Joost Kraaijeveld > Askesis B.V. > Molukkenstraat 14 > 6524NB Nijmegen > tel: 024-3888063 / 06-51855277 > fax: 024-3608416 > web: www.askesis.nl > > > -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe".
