This bug sounds somewhat similar to what problems you are having.

I know its somewhat confusing to look through bug reports to find
something similar. Also when you tired to burn the files did you use
growisofs by hand, after all K3b is just a gui, try to use growisofs
by hand.

Here is some good urls for learning about growisofs:

Re: Suggestions for DVD/CD writing software?

2004-12-08 Thread Rthoreau
 From: Ben Bettin [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 Date: Yesterday 21:52:38

I took everyone's advice and am giving k3b a try. I picked up a few
DVD+R and DVD+RW discs (my drive supports both + and - protocols).

I installed k3b with aptitude (I'm running Sarge). I started it up,
and it's giving me an error/warning message which I'm not sure how
to fix. It says the following:

 Unable to find dvd+rw-format executable
 K3b uses dvd+rw-format to format DVD-RWs and DVD+RWs.
 Solution: Install the dvd+rw-tools package.

According to aptitude I have dvd+rw-tools installed. I checked
 /usr/bin and I see dvd+rw-format listed. I started up K3bSetup2 and
checked, /usr/bin is in the search path, yet it still can't find
dvd+rw-format. I tried added /usr/bin/dvd+rw-format to the search
 path, still no luck.

I tried searching through some of the past archived post from this
group but didn't have much luck. I've only been receiving this list
for a week or so, so I apologize if there is a known fix for this
that everyone but me knows. :)

Does anyone have any suggestions for me to get k3b full working?

If I'm doomed and must use the console to burn cd-r, cd-rw, dvd-r,
and dvd-rw's, does anyone have some linkage to a nice tutorial
 describing how to do it?

Thanks so much for your thoughts.

Ben

Looking at the bug report for K3b it looks like you have found a new
bug, might be just how it was packaged.
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?which=pkgdata=k3barchive=no

While I was looking up something similar, I came across some good urls
that might be helpful to you.

http://fy.chalmers.se/~appro/linux/DVD+RW/
http://64.233.161.104/search?q=cache:lwmxIKqlJjwJ:applications.linux.com/print.pl%3Fsid%3D04/11/16/1555246+growisofs+%2B+bin/cuehl=en
http://crashrecovery.org/oss-dvd/HOWTO-ossdvd.html

The first one seems to be very in depth and somewhat official, as
other links seem to point to it. For example the last url lists the
first url as a resource.

As far as I know one of the uses of dvd+rw-tools that K3b employes is
that to erase a dvd+-rw disc. To get by this problem just use the
dvd+rw-format on the cmd line to erase the disk. As stated early in
this thread K3b uses growisofs, so a little cmd line should not hurt
anyone. I must admit the dd method is very slick, but what I really
need is something that can join two bin/cue files, or more, to fit on
a dvd+-rw media disk, and be played in a stand alone dvd player.

Anyway you might want to file a bug report against K3b for the problem
you encountered.

Either upgrade to 2.6.9 or downgrade to 2.6.7, and try to burn the
 dvd's.

Just installed K3b as a test, came up with the same bug, K3b does not
detect dvd+rw-tools, then used dpkg --purge to purge dvd+rw-tools and
reinstalled it, same problem. Seems like K3b is buggy, will wait to
file bug report, in case first poster wants to. Kernel version 2.6.7.

From K3b, Unable to find dvd+rw-format executable
K3b uses dvd+rw-format to format DVD-RWs and DVD+RWs.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/bin$ whereis dvd+rw-format
dvd+rw-format: /usr/bin/dvd+rw-format

Looks like everything else can find it except K3b.

As stated else where, I do not thing the problem is burning the files,
but it is erasing the disc if its a dvd+-rw with K3b, I seem to
remember having similar problems with K3b some time ago might of been
an early version maybe a year ago. I think I know what it was, it
totally screwed up my /etc/fstab file, once I fixed it by hand, and
did not let K3b setup use it again, still could not detect my cdrw
right, even though I used the other options in K3b.

Permission problem with XMMS!

2004-12-05 Thread Rthoreau
After doing some basic investigating I seem to have a problem with
permissions with xmms and a usb dvdrw drive. I have the drive mounted
on sr0 which points to scd0, which points to /media/usb. I have
changed the permissions to allow access to cdrom group. This link
seems to have the same problem.

http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=enlr=threadm=2WYU3-7VB-33
%40gated-at.bofh.itrnum=5prev=/groups%3Fhl%3Den%26lr%3D%26q%3Dxmms%2B
%252B%2Bpermission%2B%252B%2Bdebian%26btnG%3DSearch

I can play a music cd as root, but as a user of cdrom group I get no
sound. Every other device I use has access to sound but the usb dvdrw
drive, unless I am root. Permission is same for all drives, right
now I am running xmms with root permissions, not a big deal since I
am the only user on this machine at home, I start xmms on the cmd
line with root permission as a background process, then change user,
or close xterm window. I would like to fix this problem if it is
fixable, also I do not use any other mp3, or wav player, as xmms does
all that for me.

Re: Going to install testing: should I use sarge or woody installer?

2004-10-23 Thread Rthoreau
major snip

 From: Kevin Wang [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Actually, if you installed with Woody and afterwards change sources
 list to
 testing, everything would go mad.

So just use sarge to install if that's what finally you like to use.

It should not be a problem to use dist upgrade, you will replace most
if not all the packages, but it should work. If it doesn't then post
with your error messages, and file bug reports against those that
fail. Of course using a Sarge iso will also work, but it really
depends on your needs. It also depends on your hardware, if you have
new hardware then I would use the Sarge iso. It also depends on if
your system is a production system, if your system must be 99.999%
uptime and reliable, then woody would work. If this system is used at
home or not a critical system then Sarge should be fine, in fact some
people think Sarge is 99.998% ready for production. If your job
depended on it I would stick to woody, otherwise use Sarge.

As far as I know testing is the same as Sarge, untill testing is
frozen, and Sarge is released. When Sarge is released after a little
while the new testing or etch, will begin anew. So if you already
have Sarge in your source list you won't need to worry. That is
unless you want to follow testing, then it will be some time yet.

What version of unrar are you using? Have you tried to use the t

unrar t /some/file/name. You could always use rar, make sure its a
new version. Are these files on floppy, or downloaded to hard drive?

Also are any par2, or par files with the archive? That way you can
rebuild the archive with the par files, and any corruption that did
happen will be able to be solved. In general if your using rar files
of all sorts you really should be using par files as a general
backup, against corruption. Unless you make a backup copy of the rar
files, or keep good back ups. Most people that I find do not do this,
they assume that their archive will be intact, and forget to backup.

 I followed: http://serios.net/content/debian/java.php

Though that one is probably written for the sun howto. There used to
be debian packages available from blackdown.org, but they kinda
stopped updating them. If you have an rpm you can try running the

And how do I get .jar files to work by doubleklickind under kde

Are there maybe some security problems?

There's probably some sort of configuration dialog in KDE to
establish
a relationship between filetypes and programs. Find it and add jar to
it. The command to be executed should probably be java -jar

Another good site to check out installing java would be this one;
http://wiki.osuosl.org/display/DEV/Java+on+Debian
I used this guide on Sarge, even though it tells you to dist upgrade,
which some people might do, and end up with unstable. They make a
good point in remembering to use the documents, and dummy packages,
might be worth a check out.

As far as helping under KDE, if you make an icon you can choose the
application associated with that file. So every time you open the
file it will use that application. Check the control center see if
you can set it globally, if not then set it per application.

Chronyc Stratum 2 ntp servers access denied.

2004-09-21 Thread Rthoreau
After setting up Chrony, and reading the docs, I am still unable to
get Chrony to update my time.

So I decided to use Chronyc with the accheck url command, and I am
getting 209 Access denied commands on all the Stratum 2 servers I am
trying to contact. Yes I have inputed my Chronyc passwd like the
docs says, with Chronyc password.

According to http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~mills/ntp/clock2b.html, these
are supposed to be Stratum 2 servers with public access. There is a
note on some of the listings that suggest to drop them a notification
if you use their servers.

I would like to use accheck to verify the server is talking to
Chronyd, I would also like to find the closest ntp server that is
working. But so far no luck, I have the default .conf file using the
pool.ntp.org addresses, like this. The only thing I changed was the
online from offline, because I use DSL, and my computer is always on.

server pool.ntp.org online
server pool.ntp.org online
server pool.ntp.org online

Also in my daemon.log file I am getting these remarks.

Sep 21 22:15:59 localhost chronyd[3413]: Unrecognized subcommand at
line 14
Sep 21 22:15:59 localhost chronyd[3413]: Unrecognized subcommand at
line 15
Sep 21 22:15:59 localhost chronyd[3413]: Unrecognized subcommand at
line 16

Which correspond to the ntp server lines in the chrony.conf file.

Also if I ping some of the servers on the stratum2 lists, and even the
pool.ntp.org I get 100% packet loss. In the FAQ it did mention that
if you are behind a firewall you might have to open some ports. Why
would this affect ping? I can ping, and traceroute any other address,
but why not the ntp servers addresses?

Also if I use chronyc and activity, and sourcestats all are empty.

chronyc activity

Yes I have restarted chronyd a few times, using init.d chronyd
restart, I even went to init 1 to make double sure everything would
startup fresh. I know some of you might just suggest using my ISP DNS
servers. I might have to, but I would like to get this NTP server
thing a fair shake. Yes I have waited a few hours just in case the
cron jobs did not update chronyd. Oh I am using Debian Testing/Sarge
with current updates.

Yea I noticed an increase, but this is the first time it happened to

You think spammers would know a little bit about the addresses they

what spam filters are for. I just feel bad for Debian in general,
cause someone might be mistaken, and really think it is from Debian.
Or heaven forbid, say a problem arose and Debian decided to email

Re: Help requested: DMA, Seagate ST340014A, Kernel 2.4

2004-08-16 Thread Rthoreau
 Date: Yesterday 14:49:47

Lo, on Sunday, August 15, Richard Cobbe did write:

The computer did come with a PCI IDE controller card (the unknown mass
storage controller line above) that has another two controllers on it.
I haven't yet tried switching controllers to see if that helps at all; I
may attempt that later this afternoon.

Well, that didn't work. Moving it to the other controller should make
the hard drive visible as /dev/hde, but the kernel couldn't find the
root device, even when I specified `root=/dev/hde2' on the Lilo command
line. The odd thing is, I've switched hard drives to this controller
before, back when I was having strange trouble with the previous drive
and trying to diagnose it. I don't remember exactly what incantation I
had to mumble in order to get the kernel to find the partition, though,
so I can't repeat the process.

Does anyone else have any suggestions?

 Richard

Your lspci listing should not contain any unknown devices, for example below

I do not remember exactly what chipset the mpx series use, but its AMD 760ish

lspci says. Also knoppix, and other live cds are great to verify hardware

Re: Help requested: DMA, Seagate ST340014A, Kernel 2.4

2004-08-15 Thread Rthoreau
 Date: Today 09:04:28

 Greetings, all.

I'm running Debian stable, and I've been running the 2.2 kernel series
for some time now, because I've never had very good luck getting DMA to
work for my hard drive under the 2.4 series. However, with sarge's
release appearing increasingly imminent, I need to try to get this
resolved. Google has, unfortunately, completely let me down on this.

The hard drive is a Seagate ST340014A, and it's plugged into the main
IDE controller on my motherboard, a Tyan Tiger MPX S2466. According to
the manufacturer, this uses the AMD-760 MPX chipset. As far as I can
tell, I've configured my kernel correctly, but I'm still having serious
problems that occasionally result in filesystem corruption.

 snip

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions that anyone might have.

 Thanks much,

 Richard

I feel you pain, but since I only have a Tyan mp 2460 our hardware is a little
bit different. I am running testing with a 2.6 kernel, and am having no
problems. That being said I also use a journaling file system. I have used
ext3, and assume you are using ext2, what kernel parameters are you pasing to
the kernel? I use the noapic and acpi=off with good results, but some people
can not tell the difference. Is their a reason you have not tried a 2.6
kernel? I know you are using woody, but you might want to consider upgrading,
if you decide to go to sarge.

A while back I did have some weird problems with a 2.4.25 kernel, could never
figure it out either, I was using a Reiserfs and got some corruption, but to
be honest I believe its chipset related. Here is why, in this system I have
a CrystalFontz LCD which I use to monitor different systems specs. My
harddrive is on a single primary, and I have two other drives sharing
another IDE, durring heavy system use, say I use unrar, burning a CD or
something else, sometimes in my system logs and on screen I get, serial line
busy and it shuts down my Crystal Fontz LCD. Then if I try to restart it,
like normal it won't come up, I have to go to init1, even then it sometimes
does not comeup, until I reboot. So it would not surprise me if the chipset
is flakey, also do you use a usb mouse, or keyboard? I know for at least the
mp 2460 just having this has been know to lock the system up.

I would suggest trying a 2.6 kernel, if your using testing or sarge, and just
apt-get the k7 smp kernel image and see how it works with your DMA settings.
Also I know that some mp mpx motherboards do not like certain graphics cards,
I had a Nvidia 5600 ultra, and worked in mine, but Tyan does not support the
FX series on my board. http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?t=265196 since
then I switched back to a geforce2, that I rebuilt, put that ultra in a
single cpu system, which is used to play Doom3.

As far as knowing a silver bullet for fixing DMA in 2.4, I am at a loss other
than what I said above.

I subscribe to debian digest and about a week ago I stoped receiving the list,
this has happened a few times. I still got my other Debian mailing lists,
and thought it was a little weird. Then a day ago, I all of a sudden got a
list burp, about 87 or 100 debian digests from the missing time I did not
receive the list. I looked at the headers, and it seems that they were sent
in the last day or so, but headers can only tell so much.

This has happened in the past and I wrote it off as an ISP filtering my
messages thing. The funny thing is I always get a high count of spam so it
seems a litter weird that my ISP would filter a mailing list, and not the
spam, but such is the life of a crappy cable company. I also thought it was
weird that it did not filter my other lists, so I have no clue as to what the
problem is, in the past I sent emails to my ISP but it did not do any good.
Heck I had a DNS ISP server problem that took them 8 months to fix, I had to
use the ip address, no one local or national seemed to care.

So if murphy is acting up it would explain my digest problem. But I still
received my other lists. So I have no clue as to what the heck is going on,
doesn't murphy serve all the mailing list's? What makes digest so special if
it is murphy? Is it the collecting of the messages then posting them, ie the
digest aspect?

Did you turn off frame buffering, I have an old Nvidia card that everytime I
use frame buffering it will crash with a similar message, even if the device

wrote: If I want to build a new Debian machine to start expolring the 2.6

One easy way is to install a 2.6-kernel-image, just do an apt-cache search
for kernel-image 2.6 something then use apt-get install kernel-image. This
will get you a kernel that you can play with, or you can install the
kernel-source and build your own kernel. This assumes your using a testing,
or sid install. If your on woody then you most likely will need to dist
update to testing to get the files, and dependences.

If your talking about a clean install of Debian Sarge, you can use these iso's
to get a working system. http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/
just choose your arch, and follow the Readme, and the Howto. I have used RC1
of the debian-installer and everything works on my end. Just remember to
fill out the installer report to give feed back to the installer team so we
can get closer to a final release.

from Debian Sid, and before this card I was using a Geforce 3
Ti4200 which ran great. Anyone have any ideas, I read in
the release notes for the nvidia drivers that there is a known
problem with the AMD Irongate chipset and AGP speed and that it
will only work at 1x, but this does not make sense since I was
running the other Geforce card without
any problems for almost 2 years.
TIA
Brad Cramer

First of all you mention that the error does not show up in the log,
is that your Xfree86.log? Also after changing video cards did you
change your Xfree86 config file? Most likely you will need to
change the PCI Bus ID which might be different for each card. Use
lspci -mv to list your devices, and see if what it mentions as the
device ID.

I would use the Nvidia drivers from Nvidia which should be up to
version 5336, go to their website and download their installer. You
might need kernel headers, or a custom kernel for a complete
install, just follow the directions, in the readme. As far as the
AMD Irongate chipset issue, it should not be a problem, as it was
refering to only 1x graphics cards.

I have a Geforce 5600 Ultra in a dual MP 1.2 system, and I can say it
works great, but I am CPU limited on my graphics performance. I
also tried my card in a Athlon 1.7 gig system and had the same
problem. So I hope you have a good CPU in your system to take
advantage of the new graphics power. Otherwise you might not notice
that much of a difference. Also do you dual boot, you should not
have to change bios settings it should run at 4x, you might want to
see how it performs under Windows. If it works under Windows then
you know its a config problem under Gnu/Linux.

The only problem I have had is not setting the repeat_type=raw, I let
gpmconfig set the default settings using imps2 protocol. Then setup
X mouse settings to use gpmdata, but it borked my x, when I set it
to repeat_type=raw it fixed the problem.

Weird how did you know to use the raw value? Anyway a nice little
guide, even though I really don't know that many console programs
that use a mouse by default. I guess cut and paste is still pretty
cool in console, but then I always use up arrow key and tab
completion anyway.

I also noticed that after one does a gpmconfig and chooses to test
the mouse, after you press ctrl D, go back to your console your new
configured mouse does not work on that screen. But if you change to
a different VC you have total mouse control. Anyone notice this,
yes X is not running, I was configuring gpmconfig as root, thought I
had messed up the settings again. Maybe someone should file a bug

Why not just use wget instead of lynx, you can set wget up with recursive downloading

wget -r -1 2 http://your.website.com

If you need more information on wget see the man page, or if that is still

was thinking about making a howto about wget. But seeing the gnu docs put

Ok this might effect their AMD line, but do you really trust a MB company which uses

I keep hearing how Usenet is dead, and how the RIAA, MPAA has made inroads in their
battle against piracy. When was the last time you looked at the alt.binaries news
groups?

Usenet been their from the start, and from the look of it will still be their after
the P2P flavor of the month dies out. Whats funny is people think that Usenet is
slow, its not I can on a regular basis get 300-350kps on most of my connections.

In fact I do not dare use most P2P software, that includes bittorrent, I just can not
trust
who might be watching, what worms and viri I might catch. Yet I trust a paid
newsserver
such as are available now, they claim complete anonymous uploads, if that is what you
want.

I do agree the average person, who only wants to point and click is having a harder
time
getting his ware's. But I prefer it that way, if someone cannot or does not want to
read
the many Howto's and guides about Usenet then thats on them. Also if you think Usenet
is not
for you, you can always use IRC. Most masive downloaders I know do not use anything
but Usenet,
some might be part of private FTP servers, such things. But its just easier to point
them to the Usenet and a paid Usenet server company. Chances are you might not have
the stuff
they want anyway.

So why would I need to be quiet? What is at risk, I can tell you its not Usenet!

As posted earlier in this thread a good case is a must, also it all starts with
good cooling.
Just make sure your case fans and HSF are rated for your amps of your motherboard.
Another thing is if your case fans come with mb hearders use them, otherwise when you
go to check your temps, fan speeds, in the bios you won't know speeds otherwise.

One of the most important is your cpu HSF you need one which is quite. If you follow
the hardware sites you notice which ones are quite, also remember the bigger the fan
the less noisy it is. Most good 80 mm case fans are pretty quite, usually cpu HSF
are more loud then case fans. If you really feel that a knob will make things quite
then by all means go for it. I like to think that if your using a case fan with a knob
to make it quite, then why not get a bigger fan?

Another thing you could do is go to your local whitebox builder, and ask if you
could hear some of their case fans, HSF's in action. That way you will know what
to expect, maybe they could give you some idea's to what has worked for them.

Netcraft Shows Debian Fastest Growing!

I thought I would spread the good news, according to a Netcraft study Debain is
the fastest growing Distro which contain Debian in an Apache server header.

http://news.netcraft.com/archives/2004/01/28/debian_fastest_growing_linux_distribution.html

From July 03 to January 04 we had a 24.6% growth,
Redhat only had 17.8% growth.
We are behind total servers though, Redhat has 1,451,505 Debian has 442,752
which is not bad, third in the list.

Lets hope that more people will realize just how good Debian is as a server
and help out the community.

My motherboard uses the nForce-2 chipset, with onboard sound. I was
able to get the nForce Linux drivers up and running, and have sound
outside of VMWare, but sound is disabled on 98SE within the VMWare

I was hoping that just installing the 98 drivers off the CD that came
with my board would do the job, but the installer claims that there is
 no compatible hardware installed.

As for video, I am currently using the driver that comes with VMWare,
VMWare SVGA-2. That enabled me to set my resolution properly (1024x768
 - 32-Bit color). However, that particular driver doesn't allow
realization of my video card's full potential. The card is a 256MB
GeForce 5600 FX. Like with the nForce drivers, the nVidia drivers for
Linux are working fine, but I can't get certain features working under
Linux, specifically Direct 3D, and the Windows installer for the video
card does not see the card as a compatible device. So what does it take
to enable 3D features under VMWare? I'm trying the Windows version of

 working.

Hmm, I'm constantly advising people NOT to buy nVidia stuff because they
are LESS Free-software friendly than other companies. They may provide Linux
drivers but they are binary-only. No source code or hardware specs are
available, so you're really in the same boat as you are with Windoze.

For example, http://dri.sourceforge.net/dri_status.phtml lists plenty of
  ATI support:

  ATI

  Supported Chipsets

  * Mach64 (Rage Pro)
  * Rage 128 (Standard, Pro, Mobility)
  * Radeons up to R9200 are supported

  Important Notes

  * The Radeon naming scheme explained.
  * For Radeon PCI support see the FAQ
  * Rage Fury Maxx is NOT supported by the DRI.
  * The Mach64 (Rage Pro) is undergoing heavy development. To see if your
card is supported check Leif's status page.
  * The Radeon seems to have problems with certain early VIA chipsets.
Your best bet is to try and see if it works.

  Example Graphics Cards

  * Rage Fury
  * Rage Magnum
  * Xpert 2000
  * Xpert 128
  * Xpert 99
  * All-in-Wonder 128

but when it comes to NVidia, all we get is:

  NVidia

NVidia provides their own closed source, binary drivers. Hardware specs
are not available to the DRI developers and NVidia cards are therefore
  not supported by the DRI.

ATI may only release their hardware specs to developers under NDA but that's
a lot better than not releasing them at all. At least we get ATI source code.

As others have mentioned the battle between ATI and Nvidia has spilt over to Linux.
I think you need to take into account how you use your system, your stance on
Open Source Software. I know some people who will not use any thing that taints a
Linux kernel. While others couldn't care less about the drivers, while still others
have the idea that as long as it works department.

So what it comes down to is what type of user are you, if you don't mind going that
extra little bit to configure you system then Ati might be ok. If you need something
that is easy to setup then Nvidia is a good choice. Lots of time to get Ati working
you need to download the latest XFree86 build, go to certain sites for certain drivers
other such things. While Nvidia you visit their site download their latest driver,
make sure you have kernel-headers and run their script.

Be that as it is, I still give Nvidia a big edge, they also support freeBSD and seem
to understand that users want something that works. Yes it would be nice if both Ati
and Nvidia would open up their drivers. You know what, I have never been without
support
of a Nvidia card, it not like they don't support their chipsets.

I really doubt that Ati or Nvidia will release Open Source 3d drivers, despite as much
as we
would like them to. Especially with all the patents, cross licenses's that are in some
of those
drivers. So for now its like choosing between which is lesser of the two evils.

The simple answer to your question is Debian is Gnu/linux, so what linux supports
Debian will.
You might ask does Linux support my hardware, their are plenty of sites that dedicate
themselves
to that topic. Usually if the Linux kernel will support it Debian will too, you might
have to
update your kernel to do it, but it usually works. If you find woody lacking you
might want to try some
packages from testing, or unstable, most new kernels can be found their.

Debian Sarge Grub Question!

2003-12-11 Thread rthoreau
Dear:   Fellow Debian Users;

First a little hardware information:

Tyan 2460 Tiger Motherboard.
actual order of physical devices.
/dev/hdc dedicated windows XP pro harddrive 40 gig.
/dev/hdd dedicated Debian Gnu/Linux harddrive 120 gig.

Grub is installed in the MBR of /dev/hdd. I have /dev/hdd setup in the bios as first
harddrive to boot, which now acts like this, /dev/hdd/, /dev/hdc.

Grub sees this as (hd0) (hd1) which is reverse as to physical installation.

If I run update-grub it writes the physical location to menu.lst I then have to
change
all kernel configs to the opposite of physical, in grubs case from (hd1) to (hd0).
This
works great and I am able to boot into Debian. But it will not boot into Windows,
even if I use the proper grub root device. Windows does not boot, but will stop, and
I have to physically reset the machine.

Now after reading some docs I tried to use the map command like this:

map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) hd0)

This is done at the command line in grub at first boot, then it will boot into windows
like normal. I can also add the lines if I edit the windows stanza and will work
within
the boot sequence. But if I add it to my grub menu.lst under the Windows title it
will
not boot windows. Something like this,

Title Windows
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)
root (hd1,0)
makeactive
chainloader +1

Now in order to boot into windows, I have to at boot time add the map lines under
the command line, then boot into windows as normal, or hit esc, then highlight the
windows stanza and hit return.

How can I set this up in grubs menu.lst so it is done automatically?
I have also tried to use map function outside any title area as a global setting, but
it
does not work either.

Also would this be considered a bug, and should I submit a bug report if their is no
way to set map function in menu.lst.

Thanks,

Rthoreau

Re: Turtle Beach Santa Cruz soundcard

2003-12-04 Thread Rthoreau
 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

 Hi all,

I'm having trouble with a new Turtle Beach Santa Cruz soundcard I just put
into my Debian machine. (I took out the old card.)

A bit of searching around indicates that the Santa Cruz uses the cs46xx
chipset, so I selected that kernel module. Doing modprobe cs46xx gives me:

cs46xx: Unable to detect valid cs46xx device

then it gives me some insmod errors caused by not having a valid device.

I'm guessing there's some sort of IRQ conflict or something similar going on.
Has anyone run into this problem who could give me some guidance on where to
look? Tracking down these problems seems to me to be something of a wild
goose chase.

Thanks and regards,

Charles.

Yea the Santa Cruz sound card can be a little tricky at times, you might want
to see what lspci says, you might even have to reboot.

Here is what lsmod says about my modules loaded for sound.

cs46xx 58196 2
ac97_codec 13428 0 [cs46xx]
soundcore3972 3 [cs46xx]

Of course this is the OSS modules, and not the Alsa modules, I understand that
the Alsa modules might be of better quality, so if you feel brave go ahead
and give it a shot. It probably wouldn't hurt, as the new 2.6.-- are going
to use Alsa, so it wouldn't hurt to get things working now.

I use testing and this is somewhat of a default setup, as you know the
Santa Cruz card is not 100% supported under linux. I have several games that
after I play Xmms have major sound problems. Also after a reboot I have to
manually adjust the volume in a mixer.

You might get away with not having the ac97-codec loaded as it is not used, as
lsmod has shown. I would certainly make sure soundcore module was loaded as
to the 3 procs I really couldn't tell you as I am unsure exactly what the
soundcore module does.

Hope you get it sorted out, as the sound card is great, I just wish it was as
good as under the other OS.

and think about where I want to stop.  With 2 it's just a muscle twitch,
no cerberal activity required.

Sometimes other windows will float transitively above them.  If I need
an app to stay around for a while, I'll tab-dock it with one of the
terminals, or tab-dock it with Moz if it needs lots of real estate.

I love it.  I keep trying fancier things but get no additional benefit.
Like I said, more than 2, and I have to expend mental energy.

It took me the longest time to really start to use more than one Workspace. I
was trapped into how Windows only uses one Workspace, unless you have special
programs that provide the extra Workspaces. Back then I had dual monitors so
I have plenty of window real estate, but a ton of minimized windows.

But in Linux I started to play with workspaces, I use 3 workspaces on a dual
monitor setup. I use Workspace 3 for my Kmail and email and a browser window
pointing to a whois search sites for Spam. I use Workspace 2 for terminals,
like xterm or lcdproc server, and I have a browser on one screen also, I
might have linux sites in this with tabbed pages. Workspace 1 is dedicated
for system stats, like top, and I have a RC5-72 going in one window, with a
browser that points to news sites. Or a newsreader, or a vnc session of
another system.

I must confess I find dual monitors much, much, much more convient then many
workspaces. I would rather give up my workspaces than my monitors. But then
if I had to use a single monitor I would really want workspaces. Dual
monitors saves you time, and is a ton easier than having to switch between
workspaces, or minimize windows.

If you want to know more about dual or more monitors you might want to check
this site out.

Re: ATA Controller

2003-11-18 Thread Rthoreau
Adrian at Linux [EMAIL PROTECTED]
scribbled on Date: Today 09:03:14

Greetings all.  I have a second IDE controller card installed in my
system and am trying to get it to work under debian.

Things that may be relevant:

hda - 15g HD
hdb - 20g HD
hdc - cdrom
hdd - cdburner
and on the second controller
hde - 30g HD

hde is reiserfs and is operational under my Mandrake 9.1 install, but
not seen by my Woody install.  It is a fresh install after all the
hardware was in place, not hardware added after the install.

Hardware specifics:
Promise Technology, Inc.
Ultra 100 TX2 ATA/100 Controller

The manual says to go to www.promise.com for Linux for updates on Linux
support.  Well, I did so, but no found no love.

Also tried to Google, but didn't get any results that I understood or
could use.

So, any suggestions?  I can't help but think I simply need to use
modprobe and install a module or such.  I played around with that idea,
but didn't hit upon anything that worked.  Of course, since I'm not sure
what I'm looking for, I was guessing.

'Thank you very much.
Adrian

If you are using a woody kernel, such as bf2.4.18 you will have to use a more
current kernel image, because you will most likely have to have the promise
driver present as a module. You should look for module promise pdc 20269 you
can verify this with what lspci says about your card. Then you can see if
modconf shows the module in your current kernel. If it does then go ahead
and load it, look in your dmesg for the fact it loaded the module. If not
you can make a custom kernel,or download a newer kernel image with the added
support. You might need to change /etc/fstab to have your drives mountable.
You can always check cfdisk if the drives are showing up properly.

If you still can not get it to recognize the drives, try booting off a knoppix
cd and looking at what modules knoppix loads by using lsmod. If you do
search on google pass it along the pdc 20269 search line, it seems like some
people have a love hate relationship with this card. I do have this card but
my dual motherboard hates it, and is now in windows only system.

ISP and DNS port scanning!

2003-11-18 Thread Rthoreau
Hello: fellow Debian users

I was going over my router logs and noticed that I am getting port scanned
from my ISP, this has been happening for a while but I haven't had the time
to look into it untill now. I did a basic whois on the IP address and they
show that it is my ISP, the destination is a DNS server that belongs to my
ISP.

I sent an E-mail to abuse to see what they are going to do about it, but I am
in need of some knowledge? Is this common? is the DNS server trying to
collect or verify information on my system? If so why?

I did do a google search on DNS port scanning and denial of service, but did
not turn up anything that would explain this. That is why I am asking for
your suggestions. They seem to be sending it about every 30 seconds, so in
effect they are using a denial of service against me. Below is a few lines
of my router log.

In this format-  Time    Message Source  Destination Notes

11/18/2003 14:53:24 Firewall default policy: ICMP (W to W/ZW, type:8,

If this is common would someone please point me to a source to get more
information.

What you have all said still does not sync, when I look at the Notes provided
in my log I can see what you mean it is a type 8 icmp code 0. Or whatever you
say that means, but the destination is another DNS server.

This is a line taken from my my log again.
11/18/2003 14:53:24 Firewall default policy: ICMP (W to W/ZW, type:8,
code:0) 66.61.104.72    66.61.118.206   ACCESS BLOCK 14

Ok like I mentioned in my first post if I do a Arin Whois on address
66.61.104.72 it tells me it is a DNS block. When I do a Arin Whois on the
destination 66.61.118.206 it is another DNS block, both happen to belong to
my ISP but in different cities. My cable modem action light is almost always
solid orange, which tells me I have a busy link even if I am not using the
net.

So why am I getting pinged by a DNS server? Why are all the destinations
reported by my router log points to another DNS server?

Even if I forwarded the ping to a DMZ or a safe machine, it would not find the
machine, since I do not have any access to that network block. My Debian
uses DHCP to log into my ISP through my router, my windows machine's use
static IP's setup to log into my router.

My router is a Zyxel ZyWall 2xw with 802.11b for wireless clients. I do not
run any web, ftp, servers, and at the moment I do not have any ports
forwarded to any machine. Its like a default setup with a hardware firewall
and no ports open to the outside world. All passwords are changed, and wep
is changed at a reasonable time frame. Everything works great, except I keep
getting those recorded in my log.

I could understand if the destination was my router, or a machine under the
subnet but it is not. Also the source machines seem to change unlike the
destination machine.

That is the reason I wanted to ask all of you, I really do not know why this
is happening.

 scsi_mod, sd_mod;
 parallel port version only: imm, ide-scsi;

If it is an ATAPI zip drive, I believe the correct module is the

I decided to reread the howto's and found this link in one of them!
http://www.linuxgazette.com/issue28/lg_tips28.html#atapi

It basically says that if you use the ide-floppy module with an Atapi
drive everything will work except the eject of the disk. It also
mentions to use the scsi module only.

So I decided to burn the latest copy of knoppix and see if it detects my
Zip drive, which it does in dmesg as a scsi attachment along with my
other ide-scsi drives. I also did a lsmod to see just what modules it
loaded, and my lists are very similar to the one that knoppix uses.

But I do not get any indication in my dmesg, or kern.log when I reboot
with all the modules removed, and only have the scsi pointing to a zip
drive device. I am at a loss as to why I do not get a message in dmesg
for my zip-drive. Knoppix also see's it as a Atapi 250 iomega zip drive
so something is not right with my hardware detection.

With all the custom kernels I compile I should at least have it show up
in dmesg. So in a way it makes sense if the kernel does not see the
drive no mater what modules I try to load at boot time then I am unable
to use the drive. I know that I could just install knoppix to my
harddrive and be done with it, but I should not have to due this as
both are based on Debian.

Atapi Zip detection woes!

2003-10-01 Thread Rthoreau
Dear:  fellow Debian users;

I am having a problem setting up my Atapi Iomega Zip drive under Debian.
I have followed the Zip disk howto, and have done all its suggestions
but I am still not able to have the device work.

First off I have the Zip Drive attached to a Promise Ultra 133 ATA
controller card (yes according to promise it is able to load devices
other than hard drives). The Bios of the card does not load due to it
being a Atapi device. The drive does work under windows attached to
the controler card. I have installed the promise 20269 driver and my
system does see the card per dmesg, which is in parts below.

Which I beleive is the real problem, after googling for the above error
messages I came up empty. I used the Iomega new driver as my zip drive
is only a couple of years old and is a atapi 250 iomega zip drive.

I have also used modconf to install the module but did not pass any
parameters, which I don't know any anyway, of course it failed.

Below is what /proc/pci says.

I have also looked at syslog which does not really show much, I have a
LCDproc daemon running which defaults to syslog. So maybe some of you
guys could shed some light on this subject. What parameters do I need
to pass when using modconf? If you want all of Dmesg, or other log
files I will be more than happy to supply them.

By all means please add your name and card numbers for cross reference;
a phone number won't hurt either.

I can only wonder what in the world this got posted, guess I will whois

Anyway I get a kick out of what some people post by mistake, or is their
such a thing as posting a mistake to a Mailing list? It might be nice
to see what some peoples thought process is.

I guess I have wasted enough time and bandwidth already.

From: Pigeon [EMAIL PROTECTED]

A friend of mine is two network cables away from being able to install
a firewall for his Windoze box. I shall be setting this up, using
Debian of course.

He has an ntl:home broadband (150kbps) connection via a cable modem
whose external interface is via coax and connects to the PC either by
ethernet or USB. The connection is configured under Windoze by means
of an installation CD. Raw details on the nature of the connection are
conspicuous by their absence, as is any mention of Linux.

Poking through Networking in his Windoze Control Panel seems to reveal
TCP/IP drivers for the cable modem and no mention of PPP, so it looks
to me as if we're probably not using PPPoE. He's configured to
Automatically assign IP address on connection - Windoze DHCP? All his
DNS settings are Disabled, so I've no idea how his DNS works.

I would be quite surprised if there isn't someone on this list whose
Debian box is connected to ntl:home UK, and I would be most grateful
if you could let me know what kind of connection we are dealing with
here.

Thanks,

I use a cable modem here in the states which came with a software CD
which I did not even use. I just plugged the coax cable into the back
of the cable modem, and then used an ethernet cable from that to my
router wan port. I also use DHCP from my ISP which has their own
assigned DNS addresses.

Chances are if you go to the NTL home page it might tell you the DNS IP
address to use. Since I have a router I just use what is auto detected
in the config section. Also if you use a router you can assign static
IP addresses to your computers on your network. Even though your ISP
is DHCP but I am sure you are very aware of that.

My ISP does not support Linux, but I really do not have any problems
with it working straight out of the box. If it is a problem it usually
is with my ISP, and involve storm damage, or server maintance.

Dear: Joan

I just bought my wife a dell 600m with the Centrino chip, even though
my wife does not use linux. From reading different reports on
www.tuxmobile.com I would have to suggest that the battery life under
Linux is very good. But Intel has not been very good in porting
drivers over to Linux you might want to read up about it on
http://www.tuxmobile.com/centrino.html.

Another thing that might be of concern is that if you plan on using
wireless is that those chips do not support anything other than
802.11b. If you have an 802.11a network you will have to have
another card.

Also do you plan on using a Distributed client? I hear that the
Centrino is great at Seti as well as Folding at Home. I have RC5-72
on my wifes but Intel chips do not like the RC5 clients, I have a AMD
xp 1700 which gets about a third better than my wifes 1.6 Gig
Pentium M Centrino. But that is only on when my wife is plugged in,
and the laptop is off most of the time.

catch you later;

 Hi,

I remember stumbling over an article some time ago. It was on, I
believe,
slashdot referring to an assembly project with the goal of turning a
linux
box with a tv card into some sophisticated vcr, with electronic
programm
guide and also the ability to stream videos and to record from the tv
program.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to find this article again and
google
didn't spit out anything I found useful (maybe the wrong keywords).

  Any ideas?

Cheers,
Mariano

Mariano you might want to try out www.MythTV.org, also another good
example would be the sourceforge project of Freevo. Mythtv.org has a
lot of Debian developers so that might be a good place to look.

If you do decide to build a box make sure your tv card supports Linux,
also it wouldn't hurt to search out PVR on the net, and also DVR
becasue they are called different things by some people.

Anyway good hunting and good luck with your project.

I just have one question for all you folks who like to compile every
single package, what are the benefits? It seems like this site and
review had Debian on top, Debian was only compiled with I386.
Please excuse the long url:
http://articles.linmagau.org/modules.php?op=modloadname=Sectionsfile=indexreq=viewarticleartid=227page=1

Also Isn't Gentoo starting to introduce binaries of packages to ease
installation? I wonder how the package manager keeps up with the
added stress of keeping track of source as well as binary
applications? What happens if you have the same package from source
and binary? It makes me think that they are adding more complexity to
the system, I wonder how that effects stability? Seems like people
like the idea of compiling their own packages more than the benefit
it will create.

I would like to see more reviews of source distro's vs binary
distro's. I would also like to see a comparison between major
packages, such as KDE, Gnome 2, XFree86, compiled from source vs
binary. I also know that it might be pointless because someone could
compile with all the speed flags while the binary they choose might
be compiled for stability, and a wider user base. Such as was in the
test mentioned above.

I also would like to know how source distro's handle security updates?
Do you have to recompile your application with the new security
patches? Seems Admins wouldn't like this idea, especially if linux
becomes more mainstream, more kiddie scripters take up attacking
linux systems.

Wasn't it mentioned that it would be almost impossible to have a
complete source release of Debian? Seems like it would be a lot of
work, might as well just stick to Gentoo since they have the source
release pretty much covered.

If someone can show a nice chart showing the speed increase compared
to stability of Gentoo vs Debian, I would be more than happy to put
Gentoo on a box.

But I won't hold my breath!

Major snip

You can get micro-itx systems for $200 from idot.com, complete.
I don't know how they related to PVR applications.

All that is needed to have a PVR is a TV tuner card that is supported
by Linux, which you then can save your shows to a hard drive. Most
graphics cards nowadays have support for tv out if you buy the right
card. In fact most cards which has tv out will ship with software
for the tv watching by S-video connection.

You can get basic black cases easily enough and it may not look any
more out of place than having a DVD recorder next to a VCR.

I was thinking about that, but I want to do a proof of concept with
the available hardware to see if its worth investing in a pvr box.
Only problem I might have is I might need to buy a cheapo sound card,
cause my box does not have one. In fact I might do it over this
long weekend shouldn't be two hard to accomplish.

Need feedback concerning PVR/DVR, Home threatre setup!

2003-08-25 Thread Rthoreau
Dear:  Fellow Debian users;

I would like to get some feedback from those of you who have setup a
Linux pvr, or used linux in their home threatre system. I have been
thinking about building a dedicated pvr box for this purpose.

I have visted different sites, such as Mythtv.org and also been to
Freevo and have a pretty good idea of what is needed. My biggest
question is how does these projects work in the real world? I
followed some of the discussions looked at the hardware database and
all I see is good remarks by those posting. I have looked at some of
the change logs, these projects seem to be getting really good
traction.

I was thinking about using a micro-atx case and board probably using
an AMD chip, then getting the supported hardware for the pvr. I was
thinking about going the VIA mini-itx way but the cases are almost as
expensive as the motherboard chip combo. I also would like to have
it crunch RC5-72 in its spare time. Since I know that Mythtv.org has
a dedicated following of Debian developers, that is one reason I
thought to ask here. Also as you all know Debian will be the
Gnu/linux of choice.

I have most of the hardware on site, and could put a midtower case and
a WiFi card next to the TV but my wife wouldn't want a beige case
sitting next to the TV, also WiFI will be slow to move files on the
network. But once again the wife does not like cables, or anything
extra by the TV that looks out of place.

just use Debian Source and use apt-get to get the proper source with

I have read that guide and I find that it is not as good as this one:

Also the Debian reference has some good information about the kernel,
and also append-to-version flag. I would suggest you use that flag
as it will help keep compiles straight.

Concerning your Unresolved symbols it most likely you did not have the
proper debian patch applied. I am sure some of the developers will
reply with the inn's and out of why you need the patch. If your
going to be using Debian source, change your etc/apt/source.lst to

Greg took time out to write!

I think what the cdrecord info means is do not put a hard drive
Cd/burner on the same cable. In some notebooks there are only on IDE
controller so this happens, though I haven't actually seen a noebook
configure this way. AFAIk having a cd reader cd-recorder on the
 same
bus and copying from one burning to the other can cause the issue
 you
mention. If this is the case, DMA or scsi emulation need to be
used.
 --

 Debian GNU/Linux

When I set up my system I have a cdrw, and a dvdrom on the same
channel. Then I have my harddrives on another channel. When I was
burning the ISO it was from my harddrive to my cdrw drive, also it
only locks up at the end of the burn when fixating.

Also it leaves the question why does it not lock up in cdrdao?
Not to mention that is why I thought drives had buffers, to protect
from data error, when the drive receives too much data. When I use
driveropts=burnfree, at the end after it finishes, when using the
-immed flag it gives me that burnfree was not used.

I thought that in order to use cdrdao, or cdrecord you had to have
scsi emulation enabled. Maybe it was my fault because I didn't
specify what devices I had, maybe you thought I had real scsi
devices.

Since this happens when fixating at the end of a burn, it seems that
cdrecord could use a better method to finalize a disk. To me it
looks like a problem with the code of cdrecord, since other programs,
ie cdrdao, do not have this problem. It seems to be a case where a
software problem is blamed on the hardware. I wonder how many bug
reports where filled out before they came out with the -immed flag?

Since the Man page states that it might not work even if someone uses
the -immed flag. Does not figure verywell in my book, I understand
that this program is one of the corner stone applications of linux,
but maybe we need to question some of these programs to make sure
they become even better.

Thanks;

Question about SCSI IMMED flag in cdrecord!

2003-08-01 Thread Rthoreau
Hi fellow Debian users.

I have been pulling my hair out the last three days because every time
I tried to burn an ISO in cdrecord it locked my system solid. Had to
do a hard reset. After pouring over the Man page, searched the net I
solved my problem.

I wasn't using the -immed flag when burning with cdrecord, which for
some reason would use all the system bus, therefore lock up the
computer solid. According to the cdrecord man page:

This can be useful on broken systems with ATAPI harddisk and CD/DVD

writer on the same bus or with SCSI systems that don't use
disconnect/reconnect. These systems will freeze while blanking or
fixating a CD/DVD or while a DVD writer is filling up a session to
the minimum amount (approx. 800 MB).
snip
A correct solution would be to set up a correct cabling but there
seem to be notebooks around that have been set up the wrong way by
the manufacturer. As it is impossible to fix this problem in
notebooks, the -immed option has been added.

Since I built this system from scratch I know that I used the proper
cables. I am also using an SMP system so system resources like cpu
cycles should not be a problem. I do have cdrw, dvd on the same IDE
channel. This is a little unnerving because I thought I had a good
system. But according to the page I have a broken system, or the
wrong cables.

I also use cdrdao to burn bin/cue files and I have never had this
problem. Could this be a coding problem in Cdrecord, and they using
the -immed flag is a way out of the problem? Or is it like they say
a bus problem? I am using a current version out of unstable seems to
be a problem with all versions though.

If I do change motherboards, or my cabling will this solve my problem?
Or do I have to wait until a future bus is implemented? Have any of
you played arround with cabling, and motherboads to solve this
problem?

Re Request for Hardware Compatability Resources!

2003-07-26 Thread Rthoreau
 ASUS A7S333-WA with a 1800+ V.S. ASUS A7V8X-X something faster.
These motherboards alone are priced around $100.00 Canadian,
 my spending limit.
How would you compare these two for use with Debian. I have searched
 the
archives using google, with the keywords debian and model-#.
 The lucky
board will be very Microsoft Windows(TM) free. It has been suggested
that I look at the chip sets and see if they are supported in the
Debian kernel. Where do I look to find that information?
Would one grep in the kernel source? The Asus A7S333-WA has
 a SiS745 chiip set and the Asus A7V8x-x has a VIA KT400.

As far as being supported in Debian you will have to compile a new
kernel with the added support for those chipsets. I think the real
question is does linux support these chipsets, From doing a quick
search using google for SiS 745 + linux + kernel support, or the Via
KT400, chipsets I have found that they do support these chipsets.

Since I am not familiar with what all these boards support such as
raid and other on board support I would say that some support, and
maybe not all is supported under linux. I am curious as to why you
have chosen these two chipsets, because you can get a VIA KT600 for
about the same price as a VIA KT 400, also SiS also has a 746, and a
748 board out as well all for under 100 dollars Canadaian. Also
Nvidia has a nice single channel memory board that supports FSB 400
speeds that is under your price list. Soltek sells it, seems to be a
sweet spot for price and performance if you like the new CPU's.

If you like Asus would you consider an Asrock based motherboard, which
is a subsidiary of Asus to compete against ECS. Because Asrock has a
SIS 748 board out now that is priced very well. If you don't mind a
different brand, ECS has some good boards. I have a ECS K7S5A that
is running 24/7 is 1 1/2 years old, crunching RC5-72 with a lowly
Athlon XP 1700 CPU. Not to put you off Asus or anything, but I find
that Asus puts a premium on their boards, you might be able to find
the same chipset on an Aopen or MSI for less, sometimes for as much
as 20 US dollars less.

Anyway search the LKML for chipset support, and also google groups for
the same. But VIA does seem to be on the ball for linux support of
their chipsets.

Re: Newbie question on partitioning (primary/logical drive ?)

2003-07-26 Thread Rthoreau
ThinKer softly asked,

So I am sitting here looking at the screen (cfdisk 2.11n) and it is
asking me to select a drive to partition with the list of

 /dev/hda
 /dev/hdc
 and
 /dev/hdd.

Debian can be confusing if you really do not have much experience with
partitioning. I would suggest you read the partitioning HOWTO on
over at the www.tldp.org, this is The Linux Documentation Project
which is a good place to find stuff if your confused.

Basically what this screen is telling you is what hard drive do you
want to install Debian on. You mentioned you had three harddrives,
under Linux harddrives are under what is called devices. Or /dev when
you see /dev/hda it is most likely your first hard drive on your
Primary IDE channel. Something like this:

Primary IDE Master: 4.1 GB --/dev/hda
Primary IDE Slave: 1.2 GB---/dev/hdc
Secondary IDE Slave: 4.1 GB---/dev/hdd

This could also be partitions on a specific harddrive, say you split
your Primary Master into 3 or 4 partitions then it would be numbered
in somewhat like manner /dev/hdc1 /dev/hdc2 /dev/hdc3.

So you need to choose what harddrive you want to install Debian on,
also once you have selected your harddrive it will ask you if you
want to partition it. You will get a lot of opinions on the best way
to partition but to keep it simple you will probably want two
partitions, a swap, and a root partition.

So make sure you have a swap, and a root which for the time being will
have usr, home, var, boot on the same partition as well as everything
else. Then later you can add more partitions if you want too.

Many recommend that swap should be about twice the size as your
memory, so stick with that for the time being.

If you have a problem you can use google and look up fdisk, cfdisk
howtos which might give you some ideas.

regular runlevel and decided to give lcdproc a shot again, this
 time it worked.

Gave me all the goodness I was looking for it feels good to have

 like the options.

I believe it was a lcdproc update instead of using version .0.4.3 I
am now using version 0.4.3-13. So if you have any problems with
the lcdproc try using a newer version. This saves me from
following another mailing list, and trouble shooting my lcd, or
being a BETA tester for lcdproc.

Anyway got to love LCD's I would reccomend them to anyone, it gives
vital information at a glance instead of going through different
 programs like top, others.

Re : Atapi CD-Writer!

2003-07-06 Thread Rthoreau
 I'm running Debian 3.0, idepci kernel, my cd-writer is a (Goldstar) LG8080
IDE/ATAPI which seems to be pretty much plain-vanilla (i.e. it needs no
special drivers), on /hdb.

A couple of things you need to do first in order to do what you want you will
need at least three new modules. You already have the first the scsi-ide, you
also need sr_mod which goes along with the scsi-ide module. Also you will
need the sg module.
In the howto's the first couple of scripts check your system to see if you
have these modules and devices for them. But since your running the ide
kernel it should be taken care of. Try lsmod as root to see what modules are
listed. Then try to modprobe those which you lack to see if the modules are
built.

If the modules you lack are not built, or do not exist you need to recompile
the kernel for their support. If you do not want to recompile the kernel do
some apt-cache search for kernel images, make sure you find one that has
everything you need.

You are correct in editing menu.lst, you need to pass the boot prams on boot
up. such as you mentioned hdb=ide-scsi and such.

Check your Dmesg after bootup to see what messages you get, you should get
some init sections about scsi-ide in place. Then you need to change your
etc/fstab to reflect the changes. Or you can change the symlink in devices
to point to the correct scsi device. Which might be /dev/sr0 - /dev/scd0 or
just edit /etc/fstab for /dev/scd0 instead of /dev/cdrom.
Also if you do manage to get a cdrecord -scanbus listing, you can always use
K3B kde burning app to help set up your device. Its setup will even change
the /etc/fstab settings for you if you want. After you do that make sure you
run update-modules, and add the modules to /etc/modules so they get loaded
with the others.

Performance of a binaries vs source compliation!

2003-07-05 Thread Rthoreau
I have been doing some research lately about the performance difference
between binary packages, and those compiled from source. From what I have
learned so far their really is not a good tool to verify the difference.

I keep hearing about how important a source package is over a binary. Some
Gentoo fan boys swear by it. But I want to know about facts.
If I compile my kernel and use binary packages such as we do here with debian.
How much of a performance hit will I take?

Has anyone done a source vs binary package performance test comparison?

How much faster would a XFree86 source compiled be against a binary of the
same package under similar compile flags? Could the average user tell the
difference? How stable would the combination be?

I know that their is always a trade off, between speed and stability, a lot of
people can compile with speed optimizations with less stable results. The
Gentoo forums are full of discussions of unstable choices used in
compilation.

What I would really like to see is a comparison of basic packages done with
speed and stability as a base to see what holds up.
Is their such a beast, or has someone done some basic research to see what the
difference is?

I would like to see a basic Debian package vs Gentoo Emerge package on the
same system comparision.

Anyway hope I haven't gone two much off topic, just curious.

In regards to the OT topic of faxing over a broad band connection, the answer
would be is you don't need a dedicated fax machine to fax messages over the
internet.

I also think that many All-in-ones can recieve a fax, as a standalone fax
machine without needing a computer.

here is a quick link to a internet fax FAQ.

As regarding the All-in-ones just make sure the features you need are
available in linux. Also HP does a good job of linux support. I have an old

scanner linux support, and other support sites that cater to linux device
support.

re:Woody/SMP how to set up!

Your going to need a linux development kernel in the 2.5.x series to have
hyperthreading enabled for an SMP machine. I assume you have two Xeon CPU's
which you want to have Hyperthreading enabled? Or do you have a single P4
which supports Hyperthreading?

Woody does support smp, so if you can live without Hyperthreading you will
still have all the dual cpu goodness. That is if you are really running an
smp machine. You might want to search some newsgroups, and forums, on the
benefit of hyperthreading. Some tasks are faster, some are slower but under
linux the information is more rare because most people use windows for the
reviews. use googles linux page for a start. www.google.com/linux it gives
you a little tux and is specific to linux.

I have a Nvidia Geforce 2 MX 400 32mb card that is also a little picky. If
you do not have dual monitors I would suggest using debconf to set up the
Xconfig file.

One thing to remember about this card is it hates the frame buffer, so make
sure when you run dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 make sure you say no to
frame buffer.
Also make sure you edit out dri Module, GLcore, also change your driver to
Nvidia instead ov NV. Also make sure you follow the README in the nvidia
section on what to leave out. Because I can't remember for sure but I know
that you need to not include the DRI section.

If you can not unset the framebuffer you might need to rerun the base config
setup again. This should get you up and running, if not give google groups a
try, it has a lot of information about this.

Re: apt-get /sorces.list!

2003-07-01 Thread Rthoreau
After running into this problem, and doing a quick search a debian guru once
wisely said that the problem is with the CACHE.

The easy method is to make sure you have the file /etc/apt/apt.conf in that
file you will need to put this:

APT::Cache-Limit 12453561;

As far as I have found no one really can determine what number exactly the
cache limit needs to be. What I did was add more to that limit, mine says
18951830 works fine for me. But I have a 1.9 gig swap file, and 768 MB of
RAM.

I am sure someone has done more research on this, but I haven't dug through
the net to find it.
