So when I run, for instance, apt-get in a virtual console, I really have to read between the lines. Screen shifted to left for console and X for Acer AL2016W
I have a new computer with an Intel DH55TC Motherboard. Attempts to install the i386 stable distribution failed because the installer could not find the DVD reader. I was able to install i386 testing. I have an Acer AL2106W monitor with a length/width of 1.6. When I boot the system, KDE and the _console_ are not centered on the monitor. They are too large in the vertical direction by about 1/2 cm (1/3 in). The display is shifted to the left by about 6 cm (2.5 in) so the left part of the screen in invisible and there is a black area on the right. The fonts are poor. If I create a Xorg.conf with the largest mode being 1280x1024 instead of 1680x1050, X works but the screen is stretched. Google shows that many people have had X configuration problems with this monitor. But I am also having the same problem with the console. Where is the best place to find real expertise about this problem? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Does that restore the abiltity to switch to a functioning console? - Try a newer version of the kernel (from backports.org) and/or the newest version of the nvidia driver. - Try to play with the nvidia-settings tool; I would watch out for controls related to display brightness, the backlight, and (de)activation of output pipes. -- Regards,| http://users.icfo.es/Florian.Kulzer Florian | -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. I've got pretty much the same symptoms. I'll be grateful for any eyeballs/suggestions. I'm running a recent Toshiba laptop. The black screen chvt 1 problem hits when I use an external monitor. With the built-in monitor the switching occurs just fine. Does the laptop have Fn keys for changing the display brightness and turning the external output on/off? Do they make any difference for the blank screen? These keys don't work under my current kernel version/drivers. This might be another symptom of the same problem. I haven't visited this issue lately. It would be great to get them working (along with suspend and the wifi driver installed.) FWIW it's a Toshiba L305D-S5890. I get an external monitor to work by booting with the cable plugged into my RGB connector. That suggests to me that some problem with recognizing the monitor as connected during the VT switch might be responsible for your issue. (I have no experience with Radeon HD chipsets, so I am really only guessing here.) You could try modprobe -v radeonfb. (As far as I can tell, this module does not support your card, so this is a rather long shot.) I do get a result from that. $ sudo modprobe -v radeonfb insmod /lib/modules/2.6.26-1-686/kernel/drivers/i2c/algos/i2c-algo-bit.ko insmod /lib/modules/2.6.26-1-686/kernel/drivers/video/fb_ddc.ko insmod /lib/modules/2.6.26-1-686/kernel/drivers/video/aty/radeonfb.ko lsmod | grep radeon radeonfb 91680 0 fb_ddc 2080 1 radeonfb i2c_algo_bit5188 1 radeonfb i2c_core 19828 4 radeonfb,fb_ddc,i2c_algo_bit,i2c_piix4 But still no luck with switching to the console, I assume? I still have to test this with an external monitor. Does this mean I am changing video drivers on the fly? Not really, you just loaded another module that could provide a driver for a framebuffer device. (This is different from the Xorg driver module for your card.) It would be interesting to know if you get a /dev/fb? device once radeonfb is loaded. (I am not too optimistic, though.) Nope. Did you ever try using the radeonhd driver for xorg? No, not yet. Would that be using 'dbkg-reconfigure xserver-org' ?? You can just edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf, replace radeon or ati with radeonhd and restart X. (The package xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd has to be installed.) I just updated many xorg packages to get xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd Look how simple xorg.conf has become!! And not obvious where to configure for radeonhd. # xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file) # # This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using # values from the debconf database. # # Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page. # (Type man xorg.conf at the shell prompt.) # # This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only* # if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg # package. # # If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated # again, run the following command: # sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg Section Device Identifier Configured Video Device EndSection Mind you, I do not know how stable the current version of radeonhd is; it is still a relatively new driver. I'm willing to give it a go, if I can figure out how to tell X11 that's the driver I want. Assuming your keyboard setup isn't messed up entirely, so you can still open up an xterm in X, you could always switch runlevels (single user mode - init(8)), or try to terminate the X server (ctrl-alt-Bksp), or kill it explicitly, or kill/shutdown the display manager (xdm, kdm, gdm), in case you're using one (to avoid automatic restarting of X).

Mit den Worten eines Entwicklers: People already exopsed to modern GUIs when introduced to UNIX used to be (and still are) told to use vi or EMACS. If you complained that any product that requires you to invest hours of training just to edit text is a stinking abominations from the bottom-most pits of hell, and you can't even figure out how to save your document without a manual, you were told that you were wrong, you just had to hit ctrl+alt+meta+escape + the phase of the moon and write a small lisp routine without visual feedback, and that this is in fact a much more powerful and more efficient way to do things, and that GUI editors are baby's toys (since most of the ones on UNIX were). NEdit was for those who never capitulated to this attitude, and insisted on a _proper_ gui editor that works the way they were used to on other systems, with a focus on ease of use and familiarity for new users, so you could be productive right away, withuot sacrificing power. Vermutest du etwa andere Gründe hinter den Empfehlungen? Nö, ist halt die typische Empfehlung. Thorsten -- Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first place. :) Sozusagen. Du hast also die Wahl. :wq Thorsten -- Getting a thrill out of some stupid quote is a sign of idiocy. - turmeric pgplAI70AbSlW.pgp Description: PGP signature
