[Desktop-packages] [Bug 117751] Re: Pressure sensitivity should be enabled by default for Wacom boards

Title:
Pressure sensitivity should be enabled by default for Wacom boards

Status in “gimp” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: gimp

Starting with Feisty, Wacom boards work out of the box, except for
  pressure sensitivity.

Steps needed to enable pressure today are (in Gimp, about the same in
  Inkscape and maybe others):

  1. File->Preferences
  2. Input Devices->Configure extended input devices
  3. For each of eraser, stylus and cursor: change Mode from Disabled to Screen
  4. Save

For most people, this is just some invocation they have to do and most
don't even know what those steps do, or why there's an option to
choose Screen or Window and so on.

Given that the system correctly detects and activates the Wacom board,
it should be possible to just switch these settings on for affected
applications as well. For that matter, if these settings are just set
whether or not there is a board, does anything break or could this be
a reasonable default in the config files?

For the rare case that someone wants to use a Wacom, but without
pressure, this is exposed directly in tool in the Gimp, as you can
control what aspects pressure should affect. This setting is viewable
and changeable during use, unlike the actual activation.

  Suggestion:

Activate pressure sensitivity by default, for everyone, for Wacom
  tablets.

Title:
  Wide color channels in Gimp

Status in The GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP):
  Fix Released
Status in “gimp” package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress

Bug description:
After discussing with some graphics people in the community, it has come to my
attention that Gimp only supports 8 bits per color channel (bpc), totalling 32
bits RGBA. Architecturally, Gimp is not easily expanded to wider color
channels
such as 16 or 32 bpc; however, it is possible. Previously, some developers
created a program called "cinepaint," a Gimp fork that supported 16 and 32 bpc
color spaces. Unfortunately the project eventually halted and does not
support
the range of features of newer Gimp.

  * http://cinepaint.sourceforge.net/

Although humans can't tell the difference between 8bpc and 16bpc, mathematical
algorithms can. In particular, certain mathematics used to touch up images or
blend colors can result in a visual artifact called "banding," where visible
differences in lumance appear in the image where there previously were none,
often resulting in what look like bands of areas with different gammas or
brightnesses. To prevent this, the color space can be increased so that the
bands occur over ranges so small that when reduced back to 8 bpc color space,
they are lost with the extra information in the other 8 or 24 bits. In other
words, rounding is saved for the end of the process.

To achieve the best effect, images should be stored and operated on in a full
range color space. Rounding down to an 8 bpc color space should only be done
when the image is finally exported to a standard 24 or 32 bit format such as
PNG, MNG, or JPEG. This allows the results of previous large color space
operations (i.e. image effects such as blurring and glass lenses) to retain
their extra information so that more effects can be added on top of them
without
visible artifacts, further reducing or even eliminating banding.

This bug should not be a high priority, as it would require the Ubuntu
developers to massively patch the internal architecture of Gimp, and then to
convince the Gimp mainline developers to accept the patches. Historically,
the
Gimp mainline developers apparently have inverted interest in (i.e., will
fight
against) widened color spaces; however, professional graphics artists
understand
that at least 10 bpc of color space (i.e. 40 bit instead of 32) are needed to
produce quality images, and hence have been moving off Gimp and onto
Photoshop.
Bigger is better; even high-end 3D graphics cards operate in 128 bit color
(32bpc) (as noted in John Carmack's .plan file from when he was writing
Doom3).

  Reproducing:
  Open two consoles.
In the first console, run this command: $ sleep 15 && notify-send "THIS IS
REALLY UGLY"
In the second console, run this command: $ gksu notify-send "all done"
Now, wait up to fifteen seconds. Watch for the notification.

This notification does not look that bad, but you can not click on it,
and it is deceiving. Also, notification area notifications are also
HIDEOUS on top of the faded out screen.

However, this bug does NOT happen with the logout dialog.

  Description:Ubuntu jaunty (development branch)
  Release:9.04

Trying to use network sinks with Pulseaudio causes unacceptable CPU
  load on both ends.

To reproduce, you need 2 machines on a LAN.
It's most obvious if you run 'top' on both machines while doing the following:

  1) On machine 1 use paprefs to enable the following 3 options:
Enable network access to local sound devices
Allow other machines on the LAN to discover local sound devices
  Don't require authentication

  2) On machine 2 use paprefs to enable the option
Make discoverable network sound devices available locally

Now, on machine 2, open pavucontrol. Watch the CPU usage of
'pulseaudio' on both machines rise and rise. On one of my machines it
maxes out the CPU and pulseaudio quits.

Until recently I was using Ubuntu 8.10 on both these machines and
didn't have this problem. CPU usage of pulseaudio barely registered.

I can't see this being an ALSA issue because no audio is playing at
  the time.

  3. Close Gimp.
  4. Start Gimp again.
-> Verify that the Gimp icon remains in the launcher after a 30 seconds or
so.
-> Verify that the Gimp icon also appears in the alt-tab window switcher.

  No regression potential.

  Original description:

  Hello,

today I came across a weird bug of Unity when I tried to use Gimp.

Here is how I can reproduce it on a clean guest session:
  - Start Gimp. It will show a launcher icon as expected.
  - Close Gimp.
  - Start Gimp again.

Result: The Gimp-icon appears in the launcher for a short time and
then vanishes even though Gimp is still running of course (see also
attached screenshot)! Also Gimp windows are not listed in the window
  switcher (Alt+Tab).

I have found no way so far to make the launcher show a Gimp icon as
usual. This bug was not present in Oneric's version of Unity. Unity-2D
  seems to be not affected.

  Kind regards,
  Jan

  Pulseaudio network sinks overload CPU

Status in “pulseaudio” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: pulseaudio

I can't see this being an ALSA issue because no audio is playing at
  the time.

It is either loading them, thinking it isn't and giving an error, or
reloading them at a later date and failing. Firefox 2 would remove the

Bug description:
Hi, since GTK was updated from GTK 3.6 to 3.8 at the end of last week,
I can easily crash X by clicking around in Software Center.

Specifically, the way I usually trigger it was by doing a search
inside Software Center for 'gedit' and then clicking the gedit search
result and then clicking where it says More Info. At this point X
crashes and I'm returned to the login screen.

See also bug 1163886 where many people (including me at certain times)
had trouble with Software Center crashing with the GNOME3 PPA on
Raring (which included GTK 3.8). We haven't found the root cause for
that yet and when Software Center crashed for me then it did not take
  down X too.

  Also see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2148979 where
someone else suffered from the X-killing crash on Saucy.

I would greatly appreciate a workaround, such as a way to supress this

Closing the nautilus-cd-burner task, because this package is not in our
archive any more. In GNOME it is tracked as a Brasero bug, affecting
component nautilus-extension.

I can confirm your wish. If Brasero is also in Ubuntu the correct
package, please mark the bug from Low to Wishlist in priority.

I have set GIMP to save the position of the main window and the
toolbox windows. However, when I restart GIMP, the toolbox windows are
placed with an offset that seems to correspond to the grab resize
borders (top:0; left: 7px). This causes the windows not to be aligned
properly and they overlap on other workspaces.

I'm not sure if this is a bug in GIMP or if it's due to the way how
grab resize borders have been implemented (see bug 710271).

I was surprised when I printed a picture from the GIMP. It was
supposed to be 17.1 cm by 10.1 cm (see screenshot), but on the paper
the width became 16.6 cm (5 mm off!) while the height was ok. Before
this I printed another picture that was supposed to be 12.7 cm by 17.8
cm, but on the paper the width was just 12.3 cm. Also here the height
  was ok.

I printed to an Epson Stylus DX3850 which is shared on a Windows
machine. I printed on Inkjet Paper with Best quality and Image Type
  set to Graphics.

The image is a supplement for the board game Arkham Horror, and it was
downloaded from the Fantasy Flight Games website
  (http://new.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_minisite_sec.asp?eidm=6&esem=4).

It's hard to tell as the change was so small, but I think the printed
image looks a tiny bit squeezed horizontally.

I use GIMP 2.4.5-1ubuntu2 in Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy)

2013-05-25 Thread Thomas Hotz
I don't think this is a GIMP bug, this must have to do with the Faenza
Icon Theme, what is not in our archive.

What I don't understand why there are emblems, with the standard Ubuntu
icons there are no emblems or?

it, is extremely useful. Being able to enable this on a per-tab basis

There should be some visual to indicate private browsing as well.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 222245] Re: Installing without Internet access causes nvidia driver not installed

Installing without Internet access causes nvidia driver not installed

Status in “jockey” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete
Status in “ubiquity” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: ubiquity

  Steps to reproduce:

  1. Install an Ubuntu 8.04 LTS on a machine without Internet access and
with a nVIDIA graphics card, using Desktop CD.

  Expected behavior:

The nvidia-glx-new propietary driver is installed even without
Internet access, because the .deb package can be found in the
  installation CD.

  Actual behavior:

  - The nvidia-glx-new package is not installed, so is not used. If you go to
System->Administration->Hardware drivers, you can see that the nvidia-glx-new
driver is not installed.
  - If you go to System->Administration->Software sources, you can see that all
Ubuntu Internet repositories are activated (but the machine hasn't Internet
access!), and the Hardy CD-ROM checkbox is unchecked, so the CD-ROM is not been
used to access packages. (Could this be another issue? May I create a separate
bugreport for this?)

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: gnome-keyring

While highlighting a security setting from the network manager drop-
down menu (to manually connect to a network), I received a password
prompt. This caused the computer to "freeze". I could move the mouse,
but I couldn't click on anything; my only choice was to restart X. The
prompt was caused by network manager automatically connecting to a
  preferred wireless network.

I have been able to reproduce this bug twice: the first time was
accidentally and caused me to lose all my open windows - very
frustrating. The second time was intentional. This should be fixed as
it has a potentially catastrophic affect on wireless users (and maybe
wired?): users can lose very important work if they have a blip in
their internet connection - and possibly during other times when a
  admin password is asked for.

Fix: Show an error message stating that the mouse could not be
  grabbed.

Title:
Some radio streams which used to play OK don't play after updating to
  rhythmbox 2.98

Status in GVFS:
  Confirmed
Status in “gvfs” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
The following stream, which I have saved in "Radio":

  http://radioclasica.rtve.stream.flumotion.com/rtve/radioclasica.mp3.m3u

used to play perfectly (heard it daily) with the previous version of
rhythmbox, but after upgrading to Ubuntu 13.04 which brought a new
version does not play any more. Some other streams still play
  perfectly, for instance:

  http://www.catmusica.cat/directes/catmusica_wm.m3u

After clicking the radio nothing happens, it doesn't play the stream
or produces any other message whatsoever

Bug description:
I have btlaunchmanycurses running inside screen, on my Breezy with kernel
2.6.12-7-k7. When I have more than ~100 torrents in the directory where
btlaunchmanycurses is running, it usually gives me two (rarely three, like
right
  now) messages after some time:

  08/26/05 00:51:39 - SYSTEM ERROR - EXCEPTION GENERATED
  08/26/05 00:55:41 - SYSTEM ERROR - EXCEPTION GENERATED
  08/26/05 00:56:43 - SYSTEM ERROR - EXCEPTION GENERATED

btlaunchmanycurses does not show any behavioral difference, except that it
freezes (display freezes, CPU usage 0%, memory not freed) after the last of
those messages. I have to kill is using SIGQUIT. SIGINT doesn't seem to do
anything.

dmesg is completely inconspicuous, no sign of anything else not being in
order.
  Also nothing in /var/log.

I wouldn't hold my breath for it, but the critical mass appears to be
somewhere
  between 80 and 105 torrents.

Versions of packages bittornado depends on:
  ii python2.4.1-0ubuntu2 An interactive high-level
object-o

  Versions of packages bittornado recommends:
  ii mime-support 3.34-1 MIME files 'mime.types' &
'mailcap

Title:
Modem volume not turned off by AT&FH0M0.

Status in “system-tools-backends” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
When going online with ppp0 the modem can be heard dialling and
negoiating regardless of the `Modem Volume' setting in network-admin.
Changing the volume setting shows a corresponding change in the chat
file's Hayes commands but they're not having an affect although I
  succesfully get online.

I think the problem is the chat file has commands after the `&F' reset
factory defaults command. It seems my modem (from Demon Internet in the
UK) prefers the `H0M0' to be on a separate AT command, or as part of the
  D[TP].

Here's the default /etc/chatscripts/ppp0 which is always noisy.

  TIMEOUT 60
  ABORT ERROR
  ABORT BUSY
  ABORT VOICE
  ABORT "NO CARRIER"
  ABORT "NO DIALTONE"
  ABORT "NO DIAL TONE"
  ABORT "NO ANSWER"
  "" "ATZ"
  "" "AT&FH0M0"
  OK-AT-OK "ATDT08089916001"
  TIMEOUT 75
  CONNECT

Here's my edited version which is always silent.

  TIMEOUT 60
  ABORT ERROR
  ABORT BUSY
  ABORT VOICE
  ABORT "NO CARRIER"
  ABORT "NO DIALTONE"
  ABORT "NO DIAL TONE"
  ABORT "NO ANSWER"
  "" "ATZ"
  "" "AT&F"
  OK-AT-OK "ATH0M0"
  OK "ATDT08089916001"
  TIMEOUT 75
  CONNECT

I tried this one to see if a delay after the &F before the DT would give
time for the &F effects to settle down but it too was noisy.

  TIMEOUT 60
  ABORT ERROR
  ABORT BUSY
  ABORT VOICE
  ABORT "NO CARRIER"
  ABORT "NO DIALTONE"
  ABORT "NO DIAL TONE"
  ABORT "NO ANSWER"
  "" "ATZ"
  "" "AT&FH0M0"
  OK "AT"
  OK "ATDT08089916001"
  TIMEOUT 75
  CONNECT

One other interesting thing, chat's syslog shows that the trailing `0'
of `H0M0' is often missing from the text received from the modem.

  send (ATZ^M)
  send (AT&FH0M0^M)
  expect (OK)
   -> ATZ^MAT&FH0M^M
  OK
   -- got it
  send (ATDT08089916001^M)
  timeout set to 75 seconds
  expect (CONNECT)
  ^M
  ATDT08089916001^M^M
  CONNECT

But not always, here it was echoed back but it was also still noisy so
the lack of `0' doesn't tally with the lack of `ATM0' behaviour.

  send (ATZ^M)
  send (AT&FH0M0^M)
  expect (OK)
  ATZ^MAT&FH0M0^M
  OK
   -- got it
  send (ATDT08089916001^M)
  timeout set to 75 seconds
  expect (CONNECT)
  ^M
  ATDT08089916001^M^M
  CONNECT

Please split the `&F' from the following commands so they have an effect
on a wider range of modems.

Bug description:
  Steps to reproduce the bug:
Configure a PPP connection with g-s-t network and
  username: user
  password: ab#cd

Close it to have the entries updated. pap-secrets contains:
  "user" * "ab#cd"

Reopen g-s-t network and modify password to:
  password: eab#cd

  pap-secrets now contains:
  "user" * "eab#cd"#cd"

From that point on the parser gets confused and new modifications will further
corrupt the password. If it's the username that contains a hash mark, multiple
entries will be created, the old ones are not removed.

I have narrowed down the problem to the use of gst_replace_split (in
replace.pl)
  by gst_network_set_pap_passwd (in network.pl). gst_replace_split doesn't
protect
  hashes inside quotes.

Using client certificates which were imported before the upgrade is no
problem.
Importing CA-certificates is also no problem. It applies only to user
certificates (those who contain the private key).

My workaround was to import the certificates on an older system (not
Hardy) and then copying the ".mozilla" directory from there to my home
directory on the Hardy system. Of cause this is annoying.

It is through universal and strict web standards compliance that
gecko, webkit, and opera will evict Internet Explorer from its much
abused position of dominant market share. The less quirks a browser

Passing ACID3 would be a fine milestone for this major release.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 184508] Re: Gnome Window Selector loses windows

Bug description:
The package that this is reported against contains the Gnome Window
Selector applet. I do not know what package that is. It would be
very helpful if someone in the know set the bug to point to the
  correct package.

  -

  To reproduce:

  1) Open a bunch of windows of different applications in Gnome.
  2) Click the Window Selector to open the menu. You should see all of your
windows listed in the menu.
  3) Without clicking other windows, click the Window Selector again to close
the menu.
  4) Without clicking other windows, click the Window Selector again to open
the menu. With some probability p where 0 < p < 1, one or more of your windows
will be missing from the list.

Once missing, this window(s) will continue to be missing from the list
until you change focus to another window. Then, the next time you
click the Window Selector once, you should see all windows listed
again. (Effectively, you are back to step 2.)

I have noticed this bug only in the last week, so I don't know if a
recent update triggered it, or if it has been around for a while and I
merely did not notice it before now.

This bug is kind of a phantom, as sometimes I cannot trigger it and
sometimes it happens repeatedly. I have not found a sequence of
actions that guarantees repeatability, but if I use the desktop for a
while, the bug does occur relatively frequently.

I should stress that the windows themselves do not disappear, only the
listings of the windows in the Window Selector list.

There is a workaround. Changing window focus a few times seems to put
missing windows back on the list. On at least one instance, all of
the windows disappeared from the list and I needed to open new windows
to bring the existing windows back on the list.

This bug is quite annoying because I do not use the Window List applet
and the Window Selector is my primary method for switching windows.

some ~/.fonts.conf settings do no override desktop-wide gnome settings
  (hinting style)

Status in “fontconfig” package in Ubuntu:

Status in “libcairo” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I didn't fill out the package field, since this seems to be an
interaction between multiple packages (gnome-setting-daemon, libgtk,
  libcairo, pango/cairo).

In the 'Appearance' control app, under the font settings, I like to
use 'Subpixel' and 'Full' hinting by default, since this looks good
  for most bundled fonts.

However, there is occasionally a font (especially in the msttcorefonts
package) that doesn't look good with these settings. So I want to
override their rendering settings using .fonts.conf. My main tactic is
to usually turn on the autohinter in 'hintslight' mode for certain
fonts. Lets take Times new Roman as an example.. the .fonts.conf
incantation to do this would be:

   Times New Roman

   true
   true
   hintslight

The odd thing about this is that the 'autohint' and 'hinting' edits
seem to work, but the 'hintstyle' edit is always overridden by the
control applet's settings. I can verify this by launching gedit each
  time after tweaking these settings.

"fc-match -v 'Times New Roman'" does return the right settings, so its
something in the chain of gtk libraries that is messing it up.

Interstingly, it's not all possible edit settings that are ignored. It
seems to only be hintstyle. For example if I were to say:

   Times New Roman

false

Then this works correctly. Only Times New Roman will be non-antialiased even
in gedit. Even setting "hinting" to "false" works.. its only the hintstyle
setting that doesn't work.

  The German-Translation-String for ../plugins/backup-restore/backup-
  restore.c in evolution-2.12 german po-file, makes fist-time assistant
too wide to fit screen with a 1024x768 resolution. The english
original consists of two sentences divided by a "newline" while the
german translation consists of one sentence without such a break. E.g.
changing the line "Mails, Kalender, Aufgaben, Notizen und Adressbücher
" in "Mails, Kalender, Aufgaben, Notizen und Adressbücher \n" would
make the dialog fit again for 1024x768 resolution.

Status in “gutenprint” package in Baltix:

Bug description:
Canon ip4000 printer always tries to print on paper, even when I choose
CD-Tray in printer settings (on feisty) :(
This is a regression, because there was no problems with Canon Pixma ip4000
on Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy), also I got successful results when installed gutenprint
5.0.0 (from Edgy) in Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty).

Also I tried to use gutenprint 5.0.1 backported from Gutsy to Feisty
(backported gutenprint packages are at official Baltix GNU/Linux
  repository - http://ftp.akl.lt/baltix-linux/Baltix-Ubuntu-
packages/feisty/gutenprint/ ) and noticed, that with 5.0.1 CD printing
works, but with gutenprint from Feisty and Gutsy Canon Pixma ip4000
prints wrong colors and has other bugs, like horizontal white lines in
bigger blue areas, also some yellow or red object are printed blurry
  :(

So, this bug should be fixed at least in Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty) by
including backported gutenprint 5.0.1 into official ubuntu-backports
  repositories.

Bug description:

I have the thinkfinger module installed, referenced in /etc/pam.d
/common-auth and working successfully with gdb, sudo etc.

However on locking the screen (by clicking on the power icon and
choosing lock screen) I cannot do the unlock by fingerprint swipe.
This implies that lock screen isn't using pam.

/etc/pam.d/gnome-screensaver does include common-auth so it looks like
  things are configured correctly.

Title:
  YouTube videos make rhythmbox erratic

Status in The Rhythmbox Music Management Application:
  Fix Released
Status in “rhythmbox” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: rhythmbox

This bug was in Ubuntu Feisty with Rhythmbox 0.10.0, Swiftfox 2.0.0.3,
  and Flash 9.0.48.0.

  Steps to reproduce:

  1. Start Firefox

  2. Start Rhythmbox.

  3. Play any YouTube video.

  4. Start playing Rhythmbox

  What should happen:

Rhythmbox and the video should play at the same time with no problems.

  What happens:

The Youtube video continues playing, but Rhythmbox does not. When you
look at the progression of the song, it is abnormally fast and
  irregular.

  Debugging Output:

This is the output I got from 'rhythmbox -d' from when I started
playing Rhythmbox while the video was playing, until the output
  stopped.

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: pidgin

I have myself in the Pidgin list of contacts, both on yahoo and
gtalk/jabber protocols. My icon (avatar) that I set for GTalk is shown
correctly in GAIM, but that might be because I entered it while on a
windows machine, and GTalk stores the avatar on their servers, as in
  GMail contacts maybe.

The problem is that even if I set an image/avatar for my yahoo
account, Pidgin does not display it, and people that have me on their
list do not see my image (as I have myself added in contacts list).

If more informations are needed, I will respond. Thanks.

that when you move it down you can see the address and tabs bars, and when you
move it up they get covered.

Result: the borders of the address and tabs bars will look displaced.

check it.
  Click the Print button
Give the file any name (e.g foo.ps)
Browse to a folder you do not have write permissions on such as /root or /etc
  Click "save"
