Re: [slim] The 'Duet' is here
It is my understanding that the squeezenetwork interface and the slimserver interface will shortly both be retired and be updated to the new squeezecenter interface which is supposed to be a unified interface to control your squeezebox. It is also my understanding that the new controller will also be using the squeezecenter interface. That being said, can someone explain if the new controller will be better at controlling the squeezebox compared to using squeezecenter on a laptop? And isn't a laptop just as "portable" as the new controller? -- mortslim mortslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11039 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41805 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

There have been many similar reports of Transporter flakiness, no doubt from perfectly healthy units. It depends a lot on how you use the Transporter. If you don't use the knob or the buttons, don't use or switch to and from the digital inputs, then it seems to work just about flawlessly. Re: [slim] The 'Duet' is here
Slim Devices has an excellent track record when it comes to adding features to new products. I'm not sure how long you've been around as a customer or on the forums, but I've never seen a company more focused on adding value to existing products. And that is without even considering the number of user created enhancements that are being used by many Squeezebox owners. But all of that said, I'm willing to pay $300 for an optimized SB remote. Especially since it will really be a remote and another Squeezebox for $400. And if they do enable the DAC + headphone jack, I'll be thrilled. Re: [slim] The 'Duet' is here
I have to disagree here. Like anyone, I'd rather pay less for it, but I have plans to buy one. And no, I'm not a Transporter customer. I wish I had that kind of money to spend on audio, but I don't. What I want from the SBC is exactly what it seems like it will give me -- a graphical remote which is optimized for controlling my SB3. Put me firmly in the camp that would prefer a device that does one thing well rather than five things adequately. That's the same reason I don't want them to worry about adding things like video to the Squeezebox -- I like that it's optimized for audio. It does that one thing and it does it well. I will also say that my experience with every Slim employee I've dealt with has been positive and the forums here provide significant value. One last design suggestion for the Transporter - consider engineering remote antennas. The "rack mount" form factor of the Transporter is probably sub-optimal for the back panel mounted wireless antennas. First, the rack can serve to shield the antennas from the signal and second, the antennas' height require the rack shelves to be oddly spaced. -- mcb mcb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14755 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41910 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Down to the wire between SB Duet vs. Sonos
Ok first off, wow. Thanks for all the great insight. The logistics of setting up the SB system definitely require more thought than Sonos. It does look like that thought could pay some dividends though. Even though I think 2 boxes for each zone (amp + SB receiver) are a little more kludgy than one box, you've shown me the savings can more than offset the slight kludgeality(TM). The track limit is a concern, but I'm not at the limit yet. Sonos users are definitely squawking at that limitation. By the way one other nice advantage of the SB system is crossfading. I'm really surprised that Sonos doesn't offer it yet. Some on that forum have argued that the reason is their older hardware isn't up to the task. (SB can take advantage of the computer's CPU). But not to get too off topic. I have an extra Harman Kardon AVR 7200 that I could use for an amp for some of the speakers. This would be in addition to my current Home Theater Receiver that would concentrate on the TV. I think I could run Slimserver from my Qnap, but it looks complicated. Thanks again for all the comments and signposts/links. I'm checking out some of the threads that talk about Multi-zone installation. I wonder how the discussion would have been if Logitech had hold of the release until they had enabled the headphone output and instead released the controller under the name "SqueezeBox Portable". I'm guessing some people would still had complained on the price, specifically those that thinks the old SqueezeBox3 is overpriced. But I suspect most people wouldn't really had any problem with $300 for a portable SqueezeBox. The thing is that SqueezeBox Controller can be turned into a SqueezeBox Portable with just a software upgrade. Even if Logitech still hasn't said this straight out, I'm personally pretty sure this is something that is going to happen. It doesn't make sense to me to include the DAC and the headphone output in the Controller if they didn't have this plan. If I've understand it correctly, the DAC on the Controller is the same as the DAC in the Receiver. So the playback sound quality from the Controller might be pretty close to the Receiver sound quality. I think Logitech has priced the Controller based on this plan and not based on the current functionality it offers, this makes it seem a bit expensive at the moment but in just a few months this feeling might change when a software upgrade is available. The physical format will of course still not be as nice as the physical format of most MP3 players. But for a portable player you use inside the house and outside in the garden and to bring to friends houses, I think the current physical format is acceptable. It is for sure a lot easier to bring the Controller to a friend compared to bringing the SqueezeBox3 to a friend. -- erland Erland Isaksson 'My homepage' (http://erland.homeip.net) 'My download page' (http://erland.homeip.net/download) (Developer of 'TrackStat, SQLPlayList, DynamicPlayList, Custom Browse, Custom Scan, Custom Skip, Multi Library and Database Query plugins' (http://wiki.erland.homeip.net/index.php/Category:SlimServer)) erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41805 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

The Xilinx is a CLPD: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CPLD It's a chip which can be reprogrammed, which is what you do when you go through the "press and hold 1 on power up" procedure. I believe it handles the codecs and some of the general audio operation (the digital to analog conversion is handled by the DAC though). In the rare event I get an audio glitch, this usually clears it up. I think this is what is known as SlimDSP - the codecs are in software so new ones can (and have) been added and others can be changed. This usually fixes it for me. Unfortunately in your case it does sound as if something is malfunctioning, you shouldn't have to redo it every 20 minutes. -- Mark Lanctot Sean Adams: "So you mean, aside from the fact that Squeezebox does not do 96KHz, why doesn't it do 96KHz?" Instead of Pause/Unpause, I think On/Off might be nice, especially since SyncOptions seems to be working well (at least with MP3s on 6.5.x; I haven't started porting to SC7 yet) and there are a number of folks with players that are always synced but separately powered. It might be nice to walk into a room, press the SBR button, and have it start playing what its sync group has been playing. It's too bad the SBR doesn't have a headphone jack -- not for headphones, but for IR Blaster, which seems a natural fit for a headless media player. I'd guess it must have taken a year or so just to figure how to get it all to work. I've looked at PC audio cards and my sense of it is that most folks who are not into recording feel that decoding inside the PC box is very detremental to the sound quality. That if you want quality playback, you need some form of external DAC. On top of that, M-Audio's reputation is that it offers good value for the $ for the home recordist, but it doesn't seem to have a top quality sound reproduction reputation. I've been hanging out on a number of forums and I believe these to be widely held views. Not saying its right as I don't know, just my sense after a lot of reading. Were you able to compare the output of your sound card system with that of a Squeeze3? If you were to do it again would you use the M-Audio card or is there another you would choose next time? I've looked at multi output channel cards by supposedly "better" manufacturers and we are talking around $1000.00+-. And I'm not certain that the sound quality would be any better than the squeezebox. Guys Sorry, did not have notification on this thread and happend across it just again today. Different songs, different zones = easy. Syncronisation = Moderately easy Though, with SS 6.x, syncronisation was not precise and would produce odd echoes standing between adjacent zones. Have recently upgraded to SS 7 but have not tried zone sync yet. @schatzy That Russound Amp certainly looks like a good, low power, flexible solution. However, the T-Amp is hard to beat for price at around $40! I really like that switching, though. @Zaragon Yes, additional zones require speakers and an amp, and a second soundcard if going over 4/5 zones. However, SBs will need some kind of amp anyway. (1) what to do with CDs ... search the forum or elsewhere for "jazz loft" CD sleeves. Give about a 4:1 space compression over jewel cases (2) back to the original topic ... a well hidden part of the proposal being consulted on is that the right to copy ("format shifting") as proposed by the original Gowers report would only apply to "works published after the date that the law comes into effect". Although, to be fair, the current consultation document goes a bit further and prefers the option to "Allow format shifting of works copied after the exception takes effect" (note that this would NOT legalise our existing libraries!). Re: [slim] Multi Zone Installation help please
The main problem here is a number of amplifiers are needed to power all the separate speakers especially if you want them to be able to independantly and simultaneously play different music. I'm sure there are multi-room amps but they are probably at professional prices. One solution, except for the amps, would be the new Duet with extra receivers. It would be a simple job to put all the receivers in the central location on a Cat5 switch. A multi-amp or even separate amps in the same place driving the speaker wires. The wireless controller then is full multi-room use. If you want to consider SB3s in each room there are systems that will provide ethernet over the speaker wire that is in place. These used to be called line drivers but are essentially limited power DSL systems usually designed to be retrofited into hotels that have only telephony wiring to the rooms. You could also look at power line systems to get cat5 into the rooms. -- Zaragon Zaragon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14577 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41118 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Tracks (mp3) for won't play, SB3 gets stuck
I've had my setup for awhile (2 SB plus running Softsqueeze - WinXP machine for the server - for more than 1.5 years now). They play fine using in and all alternate media players I have (MediaMonkey, WMP, itunes). I have 6.54 slim server running. What happens is that it appears the song gets stuck at the end of the track and won't proceed to the next track. If I skip over the track, it plays the next one fine. Re: [slim] Announcing the Squeezebox Duet
Jim, thanks for the answer! I didn't want to try locate the info myself in the JHive-threads and besides, I think it's good for others to read in this duet-thread instead of trying to search for the info and perhaps not finding it. So thanks to you and bklaas for clearing this out. And good to see that it was a quick response from you Jim. Not often that the marketing dept answers that quick in companies. I myself have been working at TelCo and TelCoOps as a manager at both marketing, tech and customer care and unfortunatly it's seldom that e.g. product managers participate in direct contact with their audience/customers. Kudos! :) Regarding the remote, I just love the toggle wheel or whatever it's called. I've been using B&O DECT-phones for quite a while and it's sooo convenient and quick to use. So people who are implying that a Harmony and the controller wouldn't be possible to merge, think again. Add a scroll/toggle-wheel to the Harmony and you're there. Use that wheel to scroll through menus at any type of device, instead of clicking like mad on the up/down buttons. Regarding the controller, I understand it had the forward-button to the top right, but the back-button to the low-left of the scrollwheel, correct? For me, that's a weird setup. My 0.02$-suggestion is to move the back-button to the direct opposite of the forward-button. That's more logical. And the name being Logitech... well, go ahead ;) Regarding the sound quality, yes, I agree that the history of SD has shown it has delivered. But the reason I asked was two-fold. First, there's a change from BB to that Wol (sorry, can't see my previous post and am too lazy to open a new browser window) DAC and I have NO idea what that means in real life, second comparing the price of the SB3 and the receiver, I notice a 50% price decrease. Could really the VDC(?) screen, headphone jack and change of DAC really make it possible to decrease the price that much if either 1) the SB3 was overpriced 2) the new DAC is much cheaper because it's of less good sound/build/whatever quality or 3) since Logitech has become quite a big company since I sold computer equipment back in 1991, they also have really good batch prices cmopared to what SD had. Also, I want to say that comparing the Duet with the Sonos is not really fair. The Sonos does after all come with an included/integrated amplifier. Something I'd really want to see packaged with the Duet as well, either integrated or in a bundle. After all, buying a multi-room solution for people, or for first-time buyers for just one odd room, maybe the bedroom, it would be nice to have it all at the fingertips on the websites and not having to run around on all sites trying to find a matchinf amp. Quicker call-to-action if there was an amp-package as well, I think. Still, just my 0.02$ ;) The Sonos is much easier to setup for the iliterated(?) since it's packaged nicely. Too bad for them it's pricetag is huge for the average-Joe, who would be better off with the Duet if it was a more plug-and-play solution That all being said, I'm really happy to see this kind of product finally appear. Sure in my mind it still lacks some small details like the possibility to wake up an amp (if I've understood it correctly), the need of the controller to be able to setup the receiver and it should be available at least in one package as a turn-key-solution. May I make a wish: the next version is possible to use with the old remote (i.e. IR-receiver on the Receiver. Receiver could then be hidden away but have an IR-eye somewhere with an IR-blaster that controls the Receiver) or downloaded IR-codes to any other decent remote. The 2nd thing: To be able to set this thing up without the controller. If the last part would be possible (set it up without the controller) and someone pursuades me the sound quality is as good as the SB3, I'd buy one for each room in my house immediatly! 149 USD is just too good... Re: [slim] Announcing the Squeezebox Duet
To those that likes the SqueezeBox Controller to be a universal remove I can honestly say that I had the exact same idea until I felt the Jive prototype. After having the chance to use the Jive prototype I've changed my feelings a bit. A Harmony remote based on Jive software would be really great, but my feeling is that it will never be as great as SqueezeBox Controller to control the SqueezeBox players. The reason is that the SqueezeBox Controller is optimized to control a SqueezeBox player and Harmony universal remote won't be. The Harmony remote on the other hand will be optimized for controlling several types of equipement which the SqueezeBox Controlder won't be. My feeling is that the optimal solution will be: 1. A Harmony remote which is used for power on your system and doing simple things like launching a random playlist. 2. A dedicated SqueezeBox Controller for browsing your library when you look for something to listen to. If you like one device to solve both these problems it will be a compromise that isn't really good at anything. Using two devices like this will not be a major problem for me, the reason is that in most cases would be able to do what I want from the Harmony remote. In some cases when I get inspired and like to find something different to listen to, I'll pickup the SqueezeBox Controller and browse my library. The SqueezeBox Controller would be a replacement for the laptop which I today use when I like to browse and search my library when I don't now exactly what I'm looking for. -- erland Erland Isaksson 'My homepage' (http://erland.homeip.net) 'My download page' (http://erland.homeip.net/download) (Developer of 'TrackStat, SQLPlayList, DynamicPlayList, Custom Browse, Custom Scan, Custom Skip, Multi Library and Database Query plugins' (http://wiki.erland.homeip.net/index.php/Category:SlimServer)) erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41813 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Announce: Album Catalog Creator for SlimServer
tamanaco, I suspect you are using some form of windows operating system, Which one? If i have read your earlier posts correctly the you are using a period "." between the track number and the title. Is this correct? If it is that would be very un-standard as that causes all operating systems to think harder about the file name. All operating systems expect filename.xxx or filename. . By putting in that extra "." (01.filename.xxx) some systems will get very confused and others will just get past it, although slowly. every tagger i have ever tried either used dashes or underscores set up as standard (01-filename.xxx or 01_filename.xxx) As for changing all of your tags that is probably not necessary, but there may be a rouge one out there the is causing some of the problems seen by ACC-RC1. Frank is working on this with all the testing I am doing for him. Hopefully it gets figured out in the next few days. Re: [slim] GUTTED: The end of Pandora in the UK!
Thanks for your explanation snarlydwarf. I can never get a handle on the value of advertising. I imagine the typical punter to be like myself - not once have I been motivated to buy a Big-Mac while listening to Pandora. I kind of have a figure in my head of pennies per seat per day flowing back into advertisers coffers hence real, regular, subscription money seems so much more valuable. The US business model Pandora is operating under right now is all advertising based (isn't it?) so just how much extra is the RIAA (or whatever) looking for to permit offshore access? Something still doesn't seem to add up (but then again, my maths isn't all that hot) -- iceled iceled's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14893 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41900 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Announcing the Squeezebox Duet
For those who claim Duet is out of touch with real world pricing in the US, consider: The Duet provides what the SB3 does, but has a vastly improved color screen handheld remote control for $100 more at $399. Sonos charges $900 for its base system, but does include a low power built in digital amp. When it's time to expand to other rooms, here is the breakdown: Sonos controller: $399 Sonos Z-80: $349Total: $749 Duet Controller: $299 Duet Receiver: $150 Pkg price: $399 So, Sonos is $750 per additional room whereas Duet is $399. The pricing here is VERY real world and I say kudos to SB. -- wdrazek wdrazek's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8997 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41813 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Multi Zone Installation help please
meep, Sounds like a great set up. I use a Russound R235LS amp which draws less than one watt when the audio inputs are not feed from the SB. Then when the SB is putting out audio the amp turns on immediately and stays on for 10 minutes after the last note so that if you have a break in the music like for track changes or some other reason the amp is not turning on and off all the time. These Russound amps can also take a second speaker level for a pass thru of a local stereo. Re: [slim] Down to the wire between SB Duet vs. Sonos
Blorty, Not sure what size your music collection is but be ware the Sonos can only handle less than 25,000 tracks. In fact even getting close to that say 23,500 tracks makes the Sonos database slow down to a crawl. Thus if you are using 5-6 rooms at one time and there is more than one track playing at a time you will be in trouble. Also i spoke with Sonos just a few months ago and they told me that "There is no plan to increase the capacity for there database, and who has that much music anyway." Direct quote. Well that are many people that have that much or more music. My music collection is over 57,000 tracks, and I have heard of other people here on this forum with collections over 80,000 tracks that do not have a problem. I currently have 3 SB3's all running different music at one time off of a Mini iTX board with a Via C7 Processor @ 1GHz and 1 GB RAM. The processor only runs at about 17% this way so there is more than enough room to expand and have more SB's running with different music. As for Kluggy with and extra amp, i have heard the Sonos amps and although they sound OK you could get a much better sounding amp for the difference between the Sonos and the Squeeze Box Receiver. And really you only need one Remote unless you are going to be continuously playing different music in all rooms at the same time. Now look at the costs: Sonos / Slim Devices Controller $399.00 / Controller $299.00 Zone Player 80 $349.00 / SB Reciever $149.00 Zone player 100 $499.00 / SB 3 $299.00 Amplifier you have $200 or more for each zone to play with from the difference in cost. Music StorageYou already have it up and running if you already have a SB3 Oh by the way that is one less you have to buy for a room, so use that money for some other treat you might like to have. To me it's a no brainer. But that is just my 2 cents. I can't wait to get my hands on a Duet. YM the license fees Pandora must pay rights owners... Sure, Pandora could raise their rates to pay what is demanded of them, but they most likely ran the numbers and realized no one would pay $50/month or whatever it worked out to be. Just because Pandora collects money doesn't mean they collect -enough- money to pay what is demanded from them. Being a business, they need to collect more than they pay or they go broke and as long as the music companies fail to understand that "Music Discovery" type systems like Pandora are to their -benefit- and negotiate special rates, that won't happen. (Last.fm has an advantage: they started in the UK before 'compulsory license fees' were established and had to negotiate pricing with each label: prices much lower than the current 'compulsory' rates. Compulsory rates are set by law, specifically so each radio/net-radio station doesn't have to negotiate with everyone, they just pay the going rate into a fund that is distributed to the labels... The labels are stupid, however, and usually lobby for very high rates, missing the opportunity for advertising their music... radio and now net radio has always been good to push hitmakers and increase sales.) This isn't special to the UK: US netradio is still in danger of stupidly high compulsory fees. As I recall, Rhapsody said it would owe nearly a billion dollars under the last proposed rate structure, presently on hold. Complain to your lawmakers: they are the ones who set the fees. -- snarlydwarf snarlydwarf's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1179 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41900 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

moschous;256019 Wrote: > I guess that the restrictions will come first from the bandwidth-side. > > is there any way to setup load-balancing while delivering mp3's on big > number of squeezeboxes? That depends on a lot of factors. Wireless: You have 10-15 mbps of bandwidth (as long as your server is on wired ethernet) with 11g networking. If you stream CD quality FLAC files you will need 1mbps. If you stream mp3, you will need .25mbps.. That would give you 10-15 squeezeboxes for FLAC (lossless) or 40-60 squeezeboxes for mp3. Wired ethernet: If you have gige on the slimserver, and all squeezeboxes are wired, you should be able to get 300mbps out of the server, that would mean you could have 300 squeezeboxes on one server. Streaming native content isn't really CPU intensive, but I don't know if anyone's tried doing 300 at one time. :) -- SuperQ SuperQ's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2139 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41937 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Honestly, I'm > tired of being a server admin for this stuff. There's a few options--one of the SD employees mentioned a FitPC next to his NAS (http://www.fit-pc.com/) which has enough horsepower to run SC 7.0, and at 5 watts really can't be beat on power consumption. SlimCD on a low power server of any kind, either with internal disks or mounting a NAS, would burn much less than a standard desktop PC. I recently upgraded from a Kuro Box HG to a custom server based on a JetWay Mini-ITX board, and 2x500GB hard drives. My whole network infrastructure (server, cable modem, router) pulls about 60 watts, and that's without optimizing the CPU which has lots of power management states. Some days I wish Slim Devices had a server appliance that would solve the problem that Sonos doesn't have to (but having not seen Sonos I don't know how easy or hard it is to get it configured, and after all it's basically running some sort of server somewhere, it's just hiding more.) It's certainly theoretically possible (a rebranded FitPC perhaps) but it isn't something that Slim or Logitech really have as a core business, so I see why they don't. Having said that, there's probably a 3rd party opportunity here. -- mrfantasy --Mike mrfantasy's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1127 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41911 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Everything in my library displays as expected in the Web UI. I'll wait a little while longer before I change all my tags. The tag/folder/file naming format that I'm using is not "unusual", in fact, it's the default in many rippers. Since I backed up all of my libray recently to a separated drive (Over 570 CDs in Flac format) I do not want to make any changes to my tags unless they're absolutely necessary. tamanaco, Are you using SC7 or SS 6.5.4? I have many albums with > 10 tracks and they seem to work fine. I have found that there are many differences in the way SC7 and SC work with special characters including the "." if your track numbers have any inconsistency especially if there happens to be a rouge space in there somewhere then it seems to throw off a lot of other listings even from other albums. I have a few files (30-40) that are giving me problems and i am doing some very extensive testing before attempting to do write a bug report. And i also see that some of the problems i have been having have been fixed in the latest nightly any way. As Phil and Frank suggested maybe a good look at the tags and a rescan will help you out. I have also noticed that with the latest nightly i need to actually shut off my computer and start it back up to make some of the changes work correctly. [slim] Squeezebox options to stream
Hi list, I just bought a Squeezebox and it looks really nice! :-) i am very new on the Squeezebox Community and i would like to ask you some basic things. Which are the available options for delivering/streaming audio files (on-demand) on Squeezebox? It is obvious that there are two options: a. There is a software called slimserver which also includes some predefined internet stations (shoutcasts, url to playlists, etc) that Squeezebox is able to connect to. b. There is the SqueezeNetwork where users are able to buy content, listen famous radio stations, etc... Now, there are two questions: is there any other option that enable a user to set-up a server/mp3 library (any other alternative software server) to deliver mp3's on demand? (e.g. can i force the squeezebox to connect directly to a url-playlist? and not through the slimserver software?) can i use darwin streaming server playlists for mp3 streaming? if not, does the slimserver have tested on heavy traffic? how many squeezeboxes are able to connect to concurrently? I guess that the restrictions will come first from the bandwidth-side. is there any way to setup load-balancing while delivering mp3's on big number of squeezeboxes? Sorry for asking so many things! Thank you very much. -- moschous moschous's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14892 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41937 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Is there a 'no GUI' SoftSqueeze client?
This may be a long shot but if you don't ask you don't get... I have several old laptops lying around at home, mostly useless for real work but easily capable of decoding an internet radio stream, especially if this can be done without the overhead of the GUI. Is it possible to run a Softsqueeze client on a GUI free minimum system? Simply the idea was to have a tired old laptop in the kitchen, hidden somewhere, that boots (to SuSE Linux 10.0 if that matters) on LAN, auto-starts a SoftSqueeze-like client that does what it's told by Slimserver, and the computer shuts down when the server turns the client off. This way I have another room with its own radio, no extra clutter, and reusing an otherwise dead piece of hardware. The only bit that's missing from this is the SoftSqueeze client that can run without a GUI. Does such a thing exist, or could it be put together with a reasonable amount of work? I know a fair bit about Linux, computers in general, a bit about Perl but little about Slimserver and Softsqueeze. Any ideas? Crazy or possible? Thanks in advance. -- hellesangel hellesangel's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5658 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41936 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
