Almost all the web traffic (here and elsewhere) is about eliminating
gaps -- it's like the whole world has gone techno. While some of my
recordings (e.g. Dark Side Of The Moon) are best heard gapless, it's
not true for everything. In fact, to my taste, it's not good for most
things, but gaps are especially important in SOME forms of classical
 music.

Most of the time, I do like there to be a bit of a pause between
tracks, a natural breath-taking. Don't like it when people talk
nonstop, and I don't like it when the music plays nonstop.

My problem is that I have music from a variety of sources. Some of it
has naturally occurring gaps, as in most CDs or LPs, but some doesn't.
I'd like to be able to force a bit of a pause, without having to edit
 each track manually.

This would surely be an easy option to implement in something like SC.

 R.
I'm not sure on this but I think if you use dbpoweramp you can add
silence before and after tracks. You'll have to look on their dsp
affects section to see. It's a great program for ripping and encoding
so you might want to check and see if it will do what you want. Leave
a question in their forums and you'll get an answer. Hope this helps
you.

Re: [slim] Gaps between tracks

2008-08-16 Thread Toonie

I know this might sound like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut, but
could you try creating a 2 second long silent track? Then you could add
it to your playlists selectively, IE not in between tracks of Dark Side
Of The Moon but insert it between passages in your classical
collection.

Regards,
Toonie.

Re: [slim] Does anyone buy MP3s from Amazon?

2008-08-16 Thread Phil Karn
On Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 9:58 PM, Goodsounds
[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

So, what is your take on the CD quality issue? I personally prefer
vinyl to plastic based on my listening experiences, but do you think
 that to be unfounded?

Wow. A vinyl fan who is actually open to the possibility that CDs might
actually be better? I think you are the first I've ever seen.

This has been a hotly debated topic ever since the CD came out in the early
80s. This is unfortunate because there's a perfectly good way to settle the
issue scientifically, once and for all.

My reasoning is as follows. The purpose of an audio reproduction system is
to reproduce the original signal as faithfully as possible. It should not
add or take away from that signal in any way. Making a recording sound
good is the job of the recording engineer; it is not up to the
reproduction system to modify the engineer's work product in any way.

Ergo, if you can't tell the difference between the original and reproduced
signal, then you can't complain about the quality of that reproduction
system.

So here's what you do. You start with your favorite test signal in analog
form. It can be from any source you like, including a vinyl record; your
choice. You produce a digital version of that signal by running it through a
44.1 kHz 16 bit/sample A/D and D/A, being careful to set the overall analog
gain to exactly unity (0 dB). Now we have two analog signals, one direct
from the input source and the other having been passed through the codec.

Next you construct two audio switches. The first switch, the listener
switch, has two positions labeled simply A and B. The second switch, the
control switch, has four positions and is physically placed so that the
listener can't tell its setting. The control switch affects the behavior of
the listener switch as follows:

1. Positions A and B both play the analog signal.
2. Position A gives the analog signal, position B gives the digital signal.
3. Position B gives the digital signal, position A gives the analog signal.
4. Positions A and B both give the digital signal.

It's important to construct the circuits so the listener has absolutely no
cues as to the setting of the control switch. For example, there must be no
audible switching transients or changes in gain, latency, bandwidth or
phase. This means ensuring there is no perceptible latency in the A/D - D/A
chain.

You can see what comes next. The experimenter randomly chooses a control
switch position. The listener must then determine whether the listener
switch does anything. Note: the listener is NOT asked to determine which
position is analog or digital, or to evaluate which one sounds better. He
only has to tell if the switch does anything or not.

You do this a number of times, each time setting the control switch to a
random position determined by a pair of coin tosses (the experimenter should
NOT choose the switch position by himself).

The bottom line is simple. If the listener can't tell with better than
chance accuracy whether his switch actually selects between the original and
digital signal sources, then it is clear that the digital path is not
modifying the signal in any detectable way. And if he can't detect the
difference, he can't claim that the digital system is somehow worse.

The listener may have other perfectly reasonable reasons to prefer a vinyl
version of a recording over the CD. For example, the mixing and equalization
on the LP might be subjectively better. But that is not something you can
blame on the CD (or digital audio) per se; the fault is the recording
engineer's who prepared the signal given to the CD mastering system.

Re: [slim] Linking artists

2008-08-16 Thread ralphpnj

Interesting thread and related to this earlier thread:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43750

Only thing was during the discussion on the earlier thread I was told
many things, some true and some not true, but the one thing I was not
told was Boy, what a good idea!. So how come now a very similar idea
to the one I outlined in the earlier thread is a good idea?

In any event, I'm glad to see that others are beginning to see the
potential of a fully linked music library/database and that the
discussion is continuing. Hopefully this thread will ultimately bear
more fruit than that earlier thread.

While I understand that one can always use one of the online sources
for additional information about the artists and albums playing on
one's SqueezeBox, it would be nice to have similar information about
one's own music library stored within one's music library's database so
that not only are the various links shown but one could easily find
and play the linked item. For example, what I mean is that not only
would one be able to see that Tom Petty is a member of Mudcrutch but,
provided that the Mudcrutch CD is in one's music library, instantly be
able to add Mudcrutch to the playlist via a link. This would be very
helpful, especially when it comes to jazz and classical music. Scan
through the earlier thread for a more a detailed explanation of what it
is I'm hoping to see.

With Last.fm you can't listen to the track or album you choose. You
have to listen to -similar- tracks, which may or may not include the
one you've chosen.

Having said that, Last.fm are currently trialing their on-request
subscription service (it feels like it's been in beta for ages). This
may be much easier to integrate onto the SB than Napster and, depending
on the available library and quality, might be a better service.

Re: [slim] Touchscreen integration?

2008-08-16 Thread signor_rossi

If a screen of 4 is big enough for you the cheapest way is to just get
an used Nokia770, run Squeezeplay on the server and present its
interface via VNC or RDP on the Nokia770. Worked surprisingly good for
me (I will probably switch to a FreeNAS/SlimNAS box soon as server, so
I won't use it anymore). Or get a Siemens Simpad, it has a larger
screen (if they are still around, I bricked mine, g).
Small touch screens are relatively expensive and you still need an
extra computer to drive them. An old thin client would probably be
enough for that, but such a setup is somewhat clunky.
The Gigabyte will be relatively expensive and there is no EEE Netbook
with touchscreen in the works, you would have to do it yourself as a
mod.

Bye, signorRossi.

[slim] Album Sort Order on Controller

2008-08-16 Thread maggior

I posted this message in another thread which I later realized was part
of the Beta forum. Since the beta is long over, I figured I'd move it
over here:

Has anybody noticed that the sort order is not consistent depending on
how you got to the list of albums?

I have mine set up so that the sort order is based on artist/year/album
(that may not be exact, but I have chose the one that involves the
year).

The other day I noticed that the albums were being listed in
alphebetical order by the album title. This wasn't what I wanted!! I
checked the config and it was set to incorporate the year. As an
experiment, I went into a genre and listed all of the albums. Those
were listed in year order.

So it seems that when you list albums under a particular artist, not
matter what the setting, they are listed in alphabetical order.

Has anybody else noticed this? Am I doing something wrong? The web
interface does it correctly.

I understand the differences in opinion on what the sort order should
be, but I would think it should be consistent regardless of how you
navigated to obtain a list of albums.

I had the same thing last week. I changed my router so I also had to
change the network settings. the SB3 kept on rebooting when entering
the WPA password.

Do a factory reset (hold the ADD button while plugging in the power

network but after the reset it will not reboot when asking for the WPA
password.
This worked for me. Possibly a firmware bug I suppose.

Re: [slim] Squeezecenter and Roberts internet radios (also Sangean)

2008-08-16 Thread Paul Webster

I have a similar radio (Reciva-based) and I am pretty sure that
streaming from the SqueezeCenter works less well than it used to
compared to SlimServer.

Did much change in the regular MP3 (Shoutcast style) streaming ability
after version 5?

It is not really possible to debug from the internet radio end - but my
first though was that perhaps it is related to how the meta data is
being passed across.
It is possible to configure/suppress this at SqueezeCenter to see if it
makes a difference?

Re: [slim] SC needs an embedded player, folder.jpg db

2008-08-16 Thread Fleury

I know Moose is a fancy slipcover for SC, but my point is that the
minute or two it takes 600 album covers to load in SC takes about 15
seconds or less in Moose. Moose does a far superior job of handling
cover art. If it is drawing on the same db cache file as SC, then
something in the web interface is the culprit, maybe Firefox (which I
am using) vs. IE?

As to player, yes I am thinking of the upper right corner screen of the
SC 7.0, wher the album art, play/pause/synch buttons are located.
Squeezeplay might be the answer, though folks like myself who do not
have a controller have no clue what to expect. Is it a separate
software app like SS or integrated into the SC GUI?

 Any clues?

Only if you provide more info. You haven't provided any info except
that you are running Vista.

For example,

1. What version of SC are you running ?
2. Did you have AlienBBC running ? If so what version ?
3. What do you mean

The Alien BBC option has gone! I was listening to BBC Radio 2 and went
upstairs downloaded the latest version and no more Alien BBC.

e.g. the menu has gone or the contents of the listen again have gone
or something else ?
5.

 downloaded the latest version

The latest version of what - Windows, Virus checker, AlienBBC, Addon ?

5. What plugin did you down load - the full plugin or just the Addon ?
If you you downloaded the Plugin it should have run an installer and
not unzipped.

Please give info - it is impossible to give help without info.

[slim] Mac user: should I upgrade 6.5.1 to 7.1?

2008-08-16 Thread whitman

I'm using Slimserver 6.5.1 on my desktop iMac, OSX 10.4.11, all running
well and fine.

I need to keep up with Alien BBC developments relating to the changes
to the BBC website, and it looks like this is only going to work if I
move up to 7.1.

I have not moved to 7 so far because it doesn't seem to offer any
advantages, and anyway I generally keep to the fundamental 'ain't
broke/don't fix' rule of gadgetry. Now I may not have a choice.

Has anyone had good or bad experiences with 7.1 on Mac OSX?

images per page for that reason. If Moose is caching the images locally
then that will help it's performance a lot - but your web browser should
also be doing some caching - maybe increase it's cache size?

BTW. I really shouldn't worry. Logitech are currently going about
improving the syncing of the players, one of the two areas where the
Sonos product (far) outstrips the Logitech offering. I'm certain
they'll be looking hard at providing Napster too, the other area.
There's only two reasons I can think of to stop it being implemented:

1) Sonos have some sort of exclusive hardware deal with Napster
2) It need stuff done in firmware and there's not enough capacity

Neither seem very likely.

Re: [slim] 7.1/7.2 fails to remember previous menu position from Now Playing screen?

2008-08-16 Thread ModelCitizen

mherger;329779 Wrote:
I think it's great that you all speak up about the confusion
Yes, isn't it.
mherger;329779 Wrote:
But we'd need a clear idea on how the design should be before we can
 change it's current behaviour.
This thread has a few purposes, one of which is to open a discussion
about how the current Now Playing behaviour could be improved. If you
look at the bug at least two people have already made suggestions.

The other aims are:

1) To exlain what the bug is. In my experience many new users think the
player UI is eccentric but have trouble explaining why. From watching my
friends use my remote it seems to me that *all* the perceived
eccentricity is down the the implementation of Now Playing. I've tried
my best to explain what is happening and how the present situation came
about.
2) To see if others do indeed experience a problem with the Now Playing
area (and that it it not solely me who gets very frustrated with it).

It is a particularly difficult area. My solution appeared simple (so
simple I knew there had to be a problem with it). Dump the Now Playing
screen entirely and map the Now Playing button on the remote to the Now
Playing (Jump back on wake)* screensaver. I now realise that there are
(at least) two problems with this:

1) Not everyone has necessarily chosen the Now Playing (Jump back on
Wake) screensaver in SettingsPlayerScreensaver. It is only one of
seven options (although personally I fail to see how anyone would want
to pick anything but the Now Playing (Jump back on Wake)*
screensaver).
2) Apparently plugins are allowed to hijack the keys which can change
the behaviour of the screensaver (or rather, what happens when you use
the left arrow to leave the screen saver).

Both these points were pointed out by seasoned SlimDevices users.

I personally think that because this Now Playing area is so complicated
(esp. if plugins are involved) that the people who need to partake in
the discussion are the people who know and understand the UI very
well... which really means the seasoned users and the developers. A
discussion between these two groups is the one most likely to reach
some sort of useful solution.

Michael. It'd be helpful in your role as a lead developer and as
someone who knows the player UI inside out (designed MusicInfo etc) if
you could give us your thoughts about the current implemention of Now
Playing and any suggestions you might have on how the area could be
made simple, intuitive and logical.

I'd also be interested to know what you feel about these two points:

1) That there should not be two screens that are virtually
indistinguishable in look and name and that have different
functionality applied to them.
2) Selection of a Now Playing screen should not totally divorce a user
from what they were doing previously to selecting said screen

I realise that raising this issue has come at a bad time for the
developers, but the with new developements there has never been a time
where the correct implemention of Now Playing has been more crucial.
All the new functionality that SlimDevices have been working so hard on
(Last.fm, Pandora, Internet radio and services in general etc) are the
items most affected by the current implementation (as I have found out
whilst playing around in the small hours with 7.2 on my bedside
SlimDevice - please read about my experience using Last.fm above).

The one thing I am sure about is that Now Playing should be simple,
intuitive and obvious. No one should have to read a manual to see how
it works. Any solution that does not fit this is plainly wrong.

MC

* The Now Playing (Jump Back on wake) screensaver has now been
renamed and in 7.1/7.2 is called simply Now Playing, and is the
default option.

Wow - ModelCitizen has done a fantastic job of putting into clear
language exactly why the Now Playing situation is so horribly
confusing!

I have had SBs for a few years now, but I've always been so frustrated
by how that setting/screen/screensaver functioned... It's just never
worked exactly how I wanted it too, or indeed any way that would seem
logical

As has already been said, I really can't understand why anyone would
want the (previously default) situation of the Now Playing screen
appearing when jumping back. When I press the back/left key I always
want to just go to the part of the menu hierarchy I was last in.

Oh, and I've voted for that bug :)

I have an SB3 at my office that streams from the server here at home.
If I switch it over to SqueezeNetwork I can always switch it back WHILE
AT HOME, since SqueezeCenter 'sees' it connect to SN. Very flexible.

Do you have a Transporter? You may have some initial weirdness with
it. I've got a TP and SB3 at home and both are working great.

[slim] Squeezebox 1 incorrect Now Playing display

2008-08-16 Thread webdeck

I am running SqueezeCenter 7.1.0 on a MacPro running Mac OS X 10.5.4. I
have several SlimDevices players on my wired network: 1 SliMP3, 1
Squeezebox v1, and 2 Squeezebox v2s.

The SliMP3 and the Squeezebox v2s function properly. However, my
Squeezebox v1 does not.

The problem with the Squeezebox v1 is that the Now Playing display is
incorrect. For example, if I play an album, with shuffle off and
repeat off, here's what happens:

Initially, it displays track 1 and shows the song's progress. At some
point (14 seconds into it, with my last test), it will stop updating
progress on that song. About a minute or two into the song, the
display will switch to show track 2, even though track 1 is still
playing. The display will continue to get further and further ahead of
what is actually playing.

Note that everything is playing just fine, playing one track completely
before moving on to the next one. However, if I press the skip track
forward and back buttons, they will change the track that is playing
based on what is displayed, not what I'm hearing. For example, if
track 1 is playing, but the display says track 2 is playing, pressing
skip forward will start track 3 playing.

I have reinstalled SqueezeCenter a couple of times, completely removing
all traces of the former installation based on what customer support
recommended, but that hasn't helped. Customer support thinks that the
Squeezebox itself may be defective, but that's going to cost $90 to
initiate an RMA. I don't want to go down that road unless it really is
a hardware issue.

Has anyone else seen a problem like this?

Thanks,
-Mike

Thanks Eric and Evan.

Maybe the step to make is to 7.0 rather than 7.1, for now?

I'm using two SB3s, in different rooms.

Did either of you upgrade from 6 up to 7? Was the actual process of
upgrading problematical? Did you simply install 'over' the earlier
version? You need to reinstall plug-ins, I believe.

Any other Mac users out there with experience of all this?

2008-08-16 Thread Eric Seaberg

Any plugins that you are using in 6 will probably need to be upgraded,
plus they go into a different folder. SlimServer had its own folder
within PREFERENCES in your user LIBRARY folder, but SqueezeCenter files
live in the APPLICATION SUPPORT folder within LIBRARY.

Again, I'm running the beta of 7.2 without any problems, other than
having to tweak a few of my favorite plugs.

the end this could become a larger problem.

Most ripped tracks don't represent a problem. Some
purchased/downloaded tracks do. And then there are the
ripped-from-vinyl tracks, which vary quite a bit.

Not all CD rippers routinely and automatically put in two seconds.

Extra pause time wouldn't be a problem. Think of live music. Not too
often that there isn't more than a two second pause between songs. It's
going, in a fraction of a second, from a closing chord to an opening
chord that's the problem for me.\

Re: [slim] Gaps between tracks

2008-08-16 Thread RonM

I have a mix of files -- most of my ripped CDs are ripped to lossless
WMA -- I'd have used FLAC except that I use WMP as my computer player
and it doesn't support flac natively.

Most of these ex-CD tunes have an adequate gap, and it's not a problem.
I'm very sure that the problem isn't processor power (recent dual
core). The problem occurs mostly on tracks not ripped from CDs, which
are mostly not lossless, MP3s, WMAs.

Basically, I'd just like to force more time between tracks, as much or
more as on a typical vinyl album (aside from exceptions like Dark Side
of the Moon, and others -- I've been ripping vinyl today, and have
found quite a variation within some albums in the time between the end
of music on one track and start on the next, as much as a factor of 3
on the same album).

Just to be precise, it's not really the ripper putting in exactly 2
seconds, it's just including the postgap in the file. Normal studio
recorded CD's are typically mastered with a 2 second postgap so you end
up with 2 secs of silence at the end of each ripped track (except,
sometimes, the last one). If the CD was mastered with 1 sec postgap
you'll get 1 sec of silence, no postgap gives you gapless playback.
In other words, unless the ripper isn't doing the right thing with the
postgap (in which case, replace it!) CD ripped tracks should be as
intended by the engineer. I totally get your point about vinyl and
downloaded tracks though. Although assuming you're ripping the vinyl
yourself it shouldn't be hard to include whatever postgap you want.

[slim] Connection Keeps Dropping Out

2008-08-16 Thread cliffo

Hi All,

I've had a Squeezebox2 for some years now and am now having issues
maintaining a connection via wireless with WPA security.

I upgraded several months ago to a Billion 7404VGP ADLS/router/VOIP
device and have noticed problems since then.

What happens is a song will be playing, the screen goes blank for
several seconds and then kicks back in. Meantime the music stops then
it will restart.

The router has the firewall disabled and I have forwarded the ports as
required.

I do not have this problem if I connect the SB2 to the Squeeze Network
(currently playing it now for 15 mins or more without issue), it only
occurs when I play my local files off my laptop's external hard drive
and this will hapen every 2-3 minutes.

I think it may be the Billion causing the problem but for the life of
me I cannot work out what I may be missing.

Does anyone else have a SB running with a Billion router? Any advice?

Cheers,
cliffo

Re: [slim] Gaps between tracks

2008-08-16 Thread Eric Seaberg

Just to be precise, it's not really the ripper putting in exactly 2
seconds, it's just including the postgap in the file. Normal studio
recorded CD's are typically mastered with a 2 second postgap so you end
up with 2 secs of silence at the end of each ripped track (except,
 sometimes, the last one).

That's not totally accurate... the START OF TRACK and END OF TRACK IDs
can be put wherever the mastering engineer wants. Just think about CDs
you have where there is continuous music, yet the ID changes reflecting
a new track. This is totally within the spec.

It could have to do with your ripper as much as anything else. What
kind of files is the OP actually having a problem with?
