Ben is right. The track info shows the file format, not the transmition or streaming format. By default, when transcoding is used the highest possible quality transcode is used, so if it can SqueezeCenter will keep the stream lossless. The only time LAME is used is if you are streaming to a SliMP3 which only understands MP3, you are using http://serverip:9009/stream.mp3, or you have bitrate limiting turned on. -- funkstar funkstar's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2335 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=58797 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] 7.2 to 7.3 upgrade
since I've moved up to 7.3 from 7.2 I've noticed one change that I can't seem to see a setting for. If I play an album of 10 tracks in normal running order with no repeat in 7.3 the current track remains at track 10 after track 10 has finished playing. In 7.2 (IIRC) after track 10 had finished playing track 1 would revert to being the current track when playback stopped. I much preferred the old behaviour. Is there some option to switch behaviour or is this just how it now is under 7.3? thanks Matt -- MattC MattC's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4127 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=58825 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Actually you probably could rig it up so the audio is sent back via ethernet and terminated at the amp. I wouldn't be the best solution though. Another, but more expensive way to get a screen in the room the mausic is playing is to have an SB3 (for example) in the room and then have that synced to a reciever in the closset. Re: [slim] 1MP3-Server + 3 Hardware Palyers?
Yes each player, be default, is indepentant and will play seperate streams/playlists. You can also syncronise multiple players together, so you can have the same music in the kitchen as the living room if you want. This partnership can be formed or broken at any time through either the web interface, the remote (in the case of the SB3, Boom and Transporter) or the wireless Controller. There isn't a hard and fast limit to the number of players, it's all down to how powerful the PC running SqueezeCenter is. Although even a basic PC from the past couple of years should be able to handle more players than you are likely to have rooms. What is more of a concern is having multiple players on the same wireless network. Because of many factors, wirless can quickly get saturated and cause audio drop outs and connection problems. This obviously isn't a problem if you are hard wiring them with ethernet. Something else to consider is the format your music has been ripped in. If it is in a format the players can natively play back (Flac, MP3, Ogg, Wav, or lossy MWA), then all the server is doing is sending the data to the player and handling control etc. However if it is in a non-native format (AAC/ALAC/iTunes, WMA Lossless, etc) then the server will have to do a lot of work transcoding these as they are played. Hope this helps. The comparison most often made between Boom and SB+active speakers is the 'Audioengine A2' (http://www.audioengineusa.com/a2_home.php). Search the forums for what various listeners have to say. Most say the A2s are comparable to the Boom in sound quality, but they're a lot more than GBP 30. [slim] SB Remote Skin available?
Hi All, I've been loving my SB Duet setup that I picked up this past weekend, it really is an awesome system. However, while I am really careful with my equipment, remotes do occassionally get dropped and hit the floor. The SB remote is really, really nice with its gloss black finish and that nice, bright screen. I would hate to damage it. To help mitigate damage, I was wondering if a rubber 'skin' existed, similar to whats out there for iPods and other phones, that would 'stretch' over the device (with the proper cutouts) which would protect the remote a little bit in the event of a fall. Any suggestions? I don't even know if such a device would work with the charger, but I wanted to throw the idea out there. Music industry monitors, perhaps. Most PC speakers are pretty poor. At the very least the spaced speakers would offer advantage. In some domestic circumstances the three box solution might be preferred for all sorts of reasons. In my personal opinion, I really think it depends on -HOW- the Boom is going to be used or how the active speakers are going to be used. This in my opinion only comes down to when the rooms start to get larger and the advantage of separating the speakers come into play. This is not a huge advantage because there are not many room sizes that this applies to because as rooms become to large, even the powered speakers run out of gas and just will not due either. An SB3 and a pair of AudioEngine A2's or better yet A5's are very versatile, but at two to three times the price of Boom. So looking at that, since the Boom is basically the very same thing, for the money its almost impossible to beat and has the huge convenience of being all-in-one package. Boom is very easy to move around. Before Boom, I made a portable system out of an SB3 and a pair of AE A5s. This worked great and I carried the SB3 and A5s in one of those Rubbermaid cadies that hold cleaning supplies when I wanted to move them. Now that I have two Booms, I find the SB3 and A5s tend to stay in one place. Just looking at it from a price point of view, Boom wins hands down. One has to spend two to three times the amount of Boom on powered speakers and a Classic to equal what the Boom already does. Since the Boom has come out, it is very hard to make a case for buying a Classic and powered speakers. And the only real case in my opinion is only when the application makes more sense to go with powered speakers because Boom doesnt work as good in the specific situation. Re: [slim] Discrete on/off codes for Harmony 880
Ah, I see now. They got deleted from the 880. OK, I'm not sure why that would have happened. They still work on mine (and I update relatively often to set the time). As for fixes, there are several possibilities. I assume your 880 is still sending some kind of discrete codes (or is it sending nothing at all)? If it is still sending codes, just different one, you can turn IR debugging on in Squeezecenter and then try the on and off buttons on your 880 and then look in the log file to see what codes came through. You can then change your IR code file to the new code numbers (as in the initial post). Alternatively, there may be more than one option in the Harmony setup program for squeezeboxes (eg Squeezebox or Squeezebox 3 etc), and one of the other options may work (since mine still works). Finally, I believe that you can also type in the code manually in the Harmony setup somehow, but I haven't done it so I'm not sure. -- lanierb lanierb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5566 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24242 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Classic FM runs what's called a Windows Media Intellistream on their website. This stream detects your bandwidth and gives you either a 32k feed or a 128k feed. Depending on which browser you're using, the embedded player chosen by the browser may be Windows Media Player version 6.4. 6.4 doesn't support Intellistreaming, and will only give you the base bandwidth, i.e. 32k. Re: [slim] Boom versus SB3 cheap acive speakers
I have a Boom in the kitchen and an SB3 Classic with Audioengine A5's in the bedroom. I purchased the Boom for the bedroom, but moved it to the kitchen because even though it sounded very good, IMO it lacked stereo separation. So if you want stereo separation, go for the Classic and powered speakers (or receiver/speakers). Like iPhone said though, it will cost a couple hundred dollars more. So it depends upon how important that is to you. -- morsejeff morsejeff's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18805 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=58835 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Where to begin with multi room design
I suspect that if the original post had read 'I'm about to renovate an old house and am considering running speaker wire ...' (rather than 'I recently renovated an old house and ran in-wall speaker cables...'), the consensus view would have been 'don't bother running the speaker wire.' So maybe it dependes on how much you are determined to use the speaker wire now that you've run it? Said another way if the design question was: I'm about to renovate a house and want to have music avalable in a number of rooms/zones and I don't want to have traditional stereo components visible in each room/zone, how should I do it? Then the likely (or at least my) answer would be something like: You get the most flexibility (ie, can play different music in every room/zone) by putting a SB (of some sort) in each room along with amplification (of some sort) and speakers. Given the reasonably high quality of 'powered' speakers (many threads on this topic) and tiny footprint of the SBR you you can accomplish unobtrusiveness pretty well in any room/zone where that matters. On the other hand, if you are absolutely committed to the basement audio closet there's no reason why you can't have either a 6-zone amp and then one or some SBs (that would be one or some 'audio-in' components to that amp OR as many SB+Amp combos as you want to have separate and simultaneous music playing somewhere in the house. Just be clear if you want to play different music simultaneously in different zones you need as manay SBs as you want different music streams: one SB will let you play one music stream in one, some or all zones; but if you want to play 6 different music streams simultaneously you'll need 6 SBs somewhere in the equation. I've got both situations. In my regular house I've got a bunch of SBs with a bunch of amplification/speakers combinations. I also have a weekend house that happened to come with a built-in multi-zone system with in-ceiling speakers and in-wall control units running back to a central closet with a 6-zone amp. I have 2 SBs connected as 'audio-in' devices which allows any zone to play one of the two SBs; that is I have a max of two music streams, though either stream can be played any one, some or all zones at a given time. That setup is a little goofy and I certainly wouldn't have done it if the built-in stuff wasn't already there but it works ok. (fwiw, the built-in system was orders of magnitude more expensive than a 6-zone with 6 SBs setup would have been; it's also a bit more complicated since one has to turn on the zone using the in-wall control pad and then select music using a SBC--like I said, a little goofy). -- cshaida boom sbd + Rockit5s (powered) speakers sb3 + AudioEngine 2s (powered) speakers sb2 + Sony receiver + klipsch bookshelf speakers sb3 + Sonic TAmp + Cambridge SW speakers sb3 + m:Audios (powered) speakers (decommissioned auditron w/ late, lamented 'knob') cshaida's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1981 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=58724 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I have tried it with an MP3 and disabled FLAC (which I think means they both use WAV). With the MP3 I just tried, I hear the squeezebox start then 13s later I hear audio from the squeezebox2 but both displays show the same time, i.e. the squeezebox2 says it is 13s in to the track before I hear anything. If I unsync or turn off the squeezebox the squeezebox2 behaves correctly - it starts playing immediately. Re: [slim] Where to begin with multi room design
I have a server and networking equipment in my basement. I placed multiple SBRs right there with small amps and ran speaker wire up to my first floor In-wall speakers. I have a single controller on the first floor in a central position. In the future I will add additional SBRs and amplifiers as I want to add zones. Eventually a second controller will be placed on the second floor in the master bedroom with SBBs in each of the kids rooms. When it comes time for the second floor I will probably place the SBRs and amps in the attic to minimize the amount of speaker cable I have to run. I hope that helps. -- rainjacks rainjacks's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=21999 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=58724 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Artist sorting problem
Hi, Background: I have spent the last week cleaning up the tags in my music library (85%-FLAC, 15%-MP3) with the help of MP3tag. I delted all excess information in the tags. Only saved ID3v2 tags in MP3 files, discarding all others (ID3v1,APE) MP3 files only show (ID3v2.3) in MP3tag FLAC files just show as having (FLAC) in MP3tag. I deleted the default.m3lib for MusicIP and let MusicIP re-build the database from the updated files. I then uninstalled Squeezecenter, deleted the cache, installed Version 7.3.2 and imported my MusicIP library. So a fresh start in other words. All files have ONLY the tags shown in the following example: - Single Artist (i.e. Bob Dylan, Essential Bob Dylan) Folder: \Dylan, Bob\[1994] Essential Bob Dylan [FLAC]\01 - Blowin' in the Wind.flac ARTIST (Bob Dylan) ARTISTSORT (Dylan, Bob) ALBUM (Essential Bob Dylan) ALBUMSORT (2000) COMPILATION (0) DISCNUMBER (1/2) GENRE (Rock) TITLE (Blowin' in the Wind) TRACK (01) YEAR(2000) REPLAYGAIN_ALBUM_GAIN (Set by Replay Gain) REPLAYGAIN_ALBUM_PEAK (Set by Replay Gain) REPLAYGAIN_TRACK_GAIN (Set by Replay Gain) REPLAYGAIN_TRACK_PEAK (Set by Replay Gain) MUSICMAGIC DATA(Set by MusicIP) MUSICMAGIC FINGERPRINT (Set by MusicIP) --- Now everything is sorted how I wanted BUT with exceptions. I want to know why Cake (ARTIST=Cake;ARTISTSORT=Cake), for example appears in the T to u range in squeezecenter? There are about a dozen or more artist doing this, ranging from Billy Joel (ARTIST=Billy Joel;ARTISTSORT=Joel, Billy) to Metallica (ARTIST=Metallica;ARTISTSORT=Metallica) to name a couple off the top of my head. All the misplaced artists show up in the T to U range in Squeezecenter. I'm running Squeezecenter 7.3.2 on Window Home Server if that matters. I have a Duet and a SB3. Sorted by Artist, Year, Album in Squeeze center. All compilation albums are stored in separate folder (\Compilations\Album Name\) Any ideas on how to fix this? Do I need to use different tags? Change some settings in squeezecenter? What want is for the artist to be sorted by the ARTISTSORT tag so that for example, Bob Dylan shows up in the D section reading Bob Dylan on the screen. Any help would be appreciated. There does seem to be more interest in the Grateful Dead portion of the LMA, so being extremely selfish, maybe you can point your search engine at that section of the LMA when it is up since it seems to be off by about 25% of the total shows. -- sage23 sage23's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=21691 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=54348 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Best Router to Use With Squeezbox?
All...thank you very much for your various replies. My issue is constant rebuffering on my SB3 that is a floor away from my Airport Express base station. I have tried switching channels but there are many competing networks in my area. I have tried an additional Airport Express as a ranger extender for the base station. Nothing is working. I can only assume that I need a stronger signal than the Airport Express can provide. By the way, the SB3 that sits close to my Airport Express base station works great constantly. I would love to run wired, but can't. Squeezebox help desk doesn't seem to be able to provide any solutions, so I am trying everything now. -- fishbone fishbone's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=23063 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=58591 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Best UK price for an SB3 seems here at the moment http://www.cooltopia.com/product.php/6/30 SB3 £130 Maplin Speakers £30 Boom £170 Portability might be a consideration, as noted higher up this thread. It would be for a third station. I have in the study a Quad 77 Integrated Amp which drives a pair of Goodmans Maxims very nicely, and takes input from an Audigy card on the PC. The study audio is awaiting the addition of a Squeezebox when I move house and locate the server away from the desk. As I get older my high frequency hearing problems get worse and I am less tolerant or whiring, whining and clicking. I think maybe you missed one of my points. That point being that to equal the sound of the Boom, your going to end up spending two to three times the Boom to get it with powered spearkers and a Classic. There is NO WAY a pair of speakers costing L30 is going to sound anywhere near what a Boom sounds like. As many have said, one must buy really decent powered speakers to equal or surpass what you get in the Boom. If you have some decent equipment that just needs a Classic and pair of speakers, your still going to have to buy a decent pair probably costing more then just buying a Boom. Personally, the A2's are just below the Boom and cost more, one has to get the more expensive A5's to exceed the Boom. The Boom's sound is that good. But if money is that big of a deal, yes you can go cheap. But in the end you would have been better off spending the few more dollars and getting the Boom IMHO. Re: [slim] Slim Server and Firefly Server
Will a Squeezebox Boom see the Firefly library if I don't want to use SqueezeCenter at all? I am not clear on whether the Squeezebox support is only for the native Itunes library or can it access shared libraries (which Firefly emulates). You can run many streaming protocols on the same box as long as they use different ports. I use SC, firefly (iTunes), uShare (DLNA), SMB (for XBMC), and NFS. Re: [slim] Boom versus SB3 cheap acive speakers
A happened to have a $30.- Logitech X-230 2.1 speaker system in the pilothouse aboard Jedi. This set has so much base that I stuffed it's reflex-port with a piece of cloth even after turning the sub's volume as low as possible. I recently connected an additional SBR to it and it sounds quite acceptable. I have a Boom coming this way soon and I am really curious how much better it'll sound. I would consider this setup way good enough for kitchens all but my bedrooms. cheers, Nick. -- DeVerm DeVerm's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18104 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=58835 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
