Just checked and WinXP system time is set to update from

looks like this could be worth pursuing!

Re: [slim] Woeful sync SB3 Boom - just me?

2010-03-26 Thread awy

I don't really know how this stuff works under Windows.

The main issue seems to be that your server clock does not seem to run
at the correct rate.

Under Linux, there is a mechanism whereby an NTP daemon can detect this
and use a kernel mechanism to adjust for it. This is separate to the use
of NTP to correct the clock time using an external clock source in the
first place, or periodically.

I have no idea if something similar is available for Windows, nor why
your clock would run at the wrong speed in the first place. Perhaps
someone else here knows better.

Press hold LEFT arrow to enter Setup, scroll to Current Settings,
scroll to Update Automatically = YES
Then arrow LEFT to exit Setup, scroll to Connect to SBS, your FW should
now update when it connects to SBS.

The only catch is that I'm not certain this Setup setting is available
on earlier FW's or after a Factory Reset.
It may be that all SB3's shipped with this as a default option, I just
don't know.

[slim] One for the gurus and boffins - connection time out issue

2010-03-26 Thread EarthWalker

OK this problem is, I think, one for the IT boffins and squeezebox
gurus. It is a very long term problem that even baffled the squeezebox
help centre. My initial report was bug 8581. Sadly the problem was not
solved.

Firstly the problem is one of connection timed out at song change on my
SB3. Basically the unit stops playing at the end of a song. The problem
is intermittent as sometimes the player will play several songs in a
row and other times just one or sometimes even none.

The problem appeared when I purchased a new notebook PC in early 2008
and is only related when I use that notebook.

Testing eliminated –
• the SB3 - as the unit plays all day without faults at home with
another PC and router using wireless. Firmware on SB3 is now version
130.
• The router – as the fault occurs using 3 different routers and also
on direct xover cable connection
• Device Drivers – the notebook has had all the drivers updated and is
running the latest Vista ultimate software updates, always has.
• Squeezecentre – the problem has occurred on all versions of the
software from 2007 on as I have even ran previous versions to fault
find. I’m now running version 7.4.2 r30215
• Connections – the fault occurs regardless of connection method (4
different cables have been used and two different wireless networks)
• Virus and firewall problems – there is a different security suite
running than in 2008 (although same company) and the problem occurs
also when the firewall is shut down.
• Drives – the fault occurs no matter what drive is used. Have tested 4
separate drives including the internal drive of the notebook. All the
external drives are USB connected.
• The music files themselves – There is no system as to which files
will fail. Even help centre tested the files and determined they were
OK.

Basically I’m left with the notebook as the source of the problem. In
2008 the final diagnosis was the interference running through the
soundcard was surmised to extend to other locations including the
network card thus creating a drop of the network at song change. The
motherboard was replaced under warranty and the notebook fault fixed.

Short testing of the setup with the dud notebook after the repair
indicated the SB3 was at the time working OK but this setup was then
packed away and wasn’t used for a year or so.

Now having to use the same setup with this dud notebook the same
problem is reoccurring. The previous testing indicating all was OK was
too short and longer sessions exposed the time out problem again. This
time around the SB3 doesn’t require a reboot to clear the fault as it
did in 2008 (Big thank you Squeezeboxen engineers) and pressing next
song sometimes kicks the unit into playing again for a song or two.

Having spent a considerable amount of time testing and trying to work
around the problem I’m stumped.

One lead I have is I noticed that some users were having Connection
timed out issues when they were using a raid NAS when a storage
control automatically activated during the latter stages of the music
file being streamed. This got me thinking as I did see a storage matrix
program installed on this PC (by Dell). Opening up the Intel Storage
Matrix Controller I found the drivers for this program are not able to
be loaded and the program hangs. Diving further into the problem looks
like this notebook SATA controller doesn’t use RAID or AHCI control
which the Intel program is for it as uses IDE.

What does the brains collective here think? Am I on the right track and
this Matrix controller needs to go? I cannot normally uninstall as it
states the program is being used by a drive – yet the device manager
doesn’t show it.

Are there any other suggestions. I’m loathed to use the support centre
again as they were so good and spent a lot of time trying to solve this
in 2008. Especially since the problem lies with my notebook somewhere
and is not any fault of the squeezebox system.

Can anyone give me some pointers on where to go from here?

EarthWalker.

FYI The Server logs shows this error

[slim] Phatnoise and Mac

2010-03-26 Thread liffy99

Not directly on the subject I know but has anyone succeeded in getting a
car audio system called Phatbox (Phatnoise is the media software) to
work with a Mac ?

All my music is stored in FLAC format which Phatbox is happy with, but
the Phatnoise software was only aimed at Windows users. Someone has
written a 'Phatmac' version which I've downloaded but that only seems
to want to work with an ITunes library (and Itunes won't support
FLAC).

The only options seem to be to transcode all my FLAC files to something
that both ITunes and Phatnoise likes (so between them that basically
means MP3) or to run a Windows environment on my Mac (which I really
don't wnat to do - migrating to a MAc was all about getting away from
that).

I've tried to access a Phatmac forum but as yet haven't succeeded in
getting registered and it's not a very active site in any case.

G - everything I try seems to end in more confusion with the
plethora of standards and formats flooding the marketplace - oh for
some universality . . . . .

Cheers

[slim] Code for One For All universal remotes

2010-03-26 Thread mr-b

Does anyone have any suitable codes for a Squeezebox 3 Classic?

I have a URC7555 OFA remote and it would be handy to use it. My 2yo
just broke off the battery cover on the original remote - bless. ;)

OFA support don't have it and they're usually very good at supplying
codes for all sorts of devices. Copying all the functions manually
might take rather a long time so the code would be much easier.

The original SliMP3 remote was a JVC DVD player remote, you may have
some luck if you have a code for that. It's unlikely you will find a
cheap universal remote that has a built-in code for the regular

Re: [slim] Code for One For All universal remotes

2010-03-26 Thread mr-b

JVC DVD did the trick. :)

I looked up JVC DVDs for my particular remote and OFA came back with 3
suggested codes which can be used on either the DVD or VCR device
keys.
The first was 0623, and with that I can access virtually all of the SB3
keys! The only functions that *don't* appear to be triggered by any keys
on my remote are:

- Browse
- Size
- Favourites
- Search

and I can easily manually program these using the Learning mode.
The other codes didn't work as well.

Meanwhile OFA support just mailed me saying that I can either manually
program my OFA remote with the SB remote and then send it off to them,
or just send them the SB remote. They will then enter it into their
database and make a proper code for it (and return my remote, natch!).
Which is nice.
I'll try to do this soon.

They also ask for an image of the SB3 Remote - is there one online?
I can only find one of the tapered version which is missing the Browse
key
http://img.hexus.net/v2/audio/SD/Squeezebox/RemoteB.jpg

Mine is the gloss black rectangular one.

[slim] outdoor speaker recommendations?

2010-03-26 Thread aubuti

Now that the weather is starting to get warmer (at least in the N
hemisphere) I'm thinking about getting outdoor speakers for my
deck/patio. I've seen a few speaker models mentioned in disparate
threads, but wanted to see if a specific thread would draw out a few
more suggestions. I'm not looking for anything fancy, just something a
step (or 2-3 steps) up from the Boom that I've been using in that
location until now. The budget for speakers is US$100-300, plus another
$100-150 for an amp. The amp is likely to be an AudioSource Amp100, as
I've been happy with the one I already have in my kitchen. The area to
be covered is roughly 30 feet x 30 feet (10m x 10m).

I await the forums' collective words of wisdom

Re: [slim] outdoor speaker recommendations?

2010-03-26 Thread Chris Laplante
Big thumbs up for the *Polk Audio Atrium 45 All-Weather Speakers. *

We have them out by the hot tub. I think they sound great, and we have had
several guests randomly compliment them. They should be in the price range
you are thinking. I happened to get mine with ThankYou points from
Citibank. They've been outdoors only covered by tree canopy all winter and
still look fine weather wise.

I have mine hooked to an old car amp and a ridiculously over sized linear
power supply.

Alternatively thumbs down for the comparatively priced Cambridge Soundworks
ones. I have three other sets of various Cambridge speaker sets that I am
happy with, but the outdoor ones (that I have in a second location) fall
flat (mainly poor bass response).

Good luck, post your results, thinking of replacing the CS ones.

I can't recommend this NTP server enough:
http://www.meinberg.de/english/sw/ntp.htm

It disables the (crappy) windows time service, sets up a port of the
real NTP, and its own user, and comes with a great list of pre-defined
server pools.

[slim] SB3 shows blank track progress bar

2010-03-26 Thread bstrulo

I just saw a slightly weird bug.

I have two SB3s. One was playing and I went to the other and synched.
On this second one, I noticed that tracks were playing fine, the time
played number was fine, but the track progress bar (position indicator
bar) was empty and remained so - as if the track had just started.

This continued through an unsync and switching the player on and off.
Then I had to go out and by the time I got back my wife had done
stuff - it was playing other music and the track progress bar was back
to normal.

I can't reproduce it and so I'm not going to raise a bug report - not
much to go on. But it was a bit weird.

[slim] Transporter display problem

2010-03-26 Thread ModMike

Has anyone ever seen a Transporter (or SB) display scramble or look like
the text has been garbled or jumbled? I tried uploading a JPG but it
wouldn't accept the image file.

Here's a link: http://www.monigle.net/glitch.jpg

My hunch is this is somehow related to the server/software, but perhaps
it is a hardware malfunction. This TP is about 3 years old, and has
worked flawlessly. I sold to someone via ebay and he is seeing this on
the display.

Any help much appreciated.

[slim] The Coolest

2010-03-26 Thread Zten

I have had a SB2 since 2007. I love it. I haven't updated the slim
server in a few years. I had a bad experince in 2008 where a whole
Saturday got eaten up by an upgrade gone awry... I vowed if it ain't
broke, don't fix it and no longer updated the slim server.

Anyway, I have a DROID phone and heard about the free squeeze-droid
app. However it would not work with my very old slim server. So, I
threw caution to the wind and did the upgrade. I am glad to report even
upgrading from version 6.5.something to the latest version went
seemlessly. Then I synced up my droid in 2 minutes and viola, it was
rocking. Controlling my SB2 flawlessly. And so responsive, too. I had
used the nokia N770 for a few years. Its amazing how much better this
works!

So, just wanted to post some good news and commend you all for what you
do. It is amazing when a 4.5 year old peice of HW can be upgraded for
free and be so new and fresh! Awesome!

click play to start the playlist again.

 Does the audio recover then?

 Thanks.

With the regular windows version it does recover by pausing and
resuming as you suggested from web gui, but asio version does NOT.

Next?

Phil Leigh;528219 Wrote:
have you rebooted your router recently?

Haven't Phil, but will. It's only been up a couple of weeks at most.

General question if anyone can help - I'm curious; why do my
Squeezeboxen care if the time that they're getting from Windows is
wrong? Come to that, how do they know - what do they compare it
against? Or don't they? And I'd thought to adjust sync you'd just
count + or - milliseconds against the other network stream; so my brain
doesn't understand why the time of day being accurate is important.

I think it's fair to say I don't understand why wrong time as in the
time-of-day could cause a sync problem with my Squeezeboxen, but I'm
prepared to accept that it is!

I'm in need of enlightenment!

[slim] nokia770 skin question

2010-03-26 Thread ulvi

In case there is anyone left using the nokia tablet as
a squeezebox controller:

I have a Nokia N800 and would like to use it as an artwork
display next to my SB3. The Nokia770 skin in the squeezeserver
7.4.2 works fine on my tablet, but if I leave it running
on the now playing display, the connection to the server seems
to get lost after a few minutes. The display freezes in the middle
of the track and does not update as other tracks are being played,
until I do a browser refresh and then it's fine again (though
sometimes
it gives me a connection lost screen, and reconnects after
tapping on the try-again button). So the question is: is there anyway
to make sure that the N800 browser keeps refreshing periodically
so this doesn't happen?

BTW, I keep the tablet on the charger so the display always stays
lit (there is an option for this in the display settings), but the
above connection-dropping problem is independent of this setting
(I tested it). Also, the WiFi connection appears to be stable and
does not get dropped when the browser gets stuck (other network
functions such as email updating and the RSS feed scroll are
unaffected).

The solution could be as kludgy as a script refreshing the browser
every couple of minutes, I would be happy if there is anything like
that
I can install and keep running.

Thanks for any tips / help

Re: [slim] Code for One For All universal remotes

2010-03-26 Thread florca

If you want to make your OFA remote do all sorts of clever new things
and are prepared to spend some time and effort (and a bit of cash for a
special interface cable) then take a look at the JP1 interface site
here:

http://www.hifi-remote.com/jp1/

All of the codes for the Squeezebox are supported, and every other
device I've ever encountered - and if a device isn't there already you
can add codes yourself and file them for other users. The learning
curve is a bit steep but once you get the hang of things it works well.
The URC-7555 / 7556 remotes are well supported.

Phil
