Re: [slim] Rhapsody no longer plays on Squeezebox Classic
Hokie, I have exactly the same problem. On July 12, 2011 Rhapsody made some change to their service that broke the playback on a wide range of systems. The SB Classic is one of the systems that is still broke. In reading it looked like SBS 7.5.5 and firmware 134 was supposed to fix this but for us, it is still broke. I went ahead and upgraded my SBS to 7.6.0 - r32722 but that did not help the Classic unit which is now at firmware 137. I am able now to get Rhapsody to play on a Duet and the Duet Remote. Re: [slim] Squeezeboxserver on Linux broken
My Squeezebox servers have been down for a week because of this most recent problem and I get the very definite impression that no one really understands what's wrong (I certainly don't). Perl is fine for its original purpose of running quickie, one-off scripts on text and system log files. That's how I use it. But I think it's simply the wrong platform for a large, complex and unique package like squeezeboxserver with many dependencies on a huge and only loosely standardized run-time environment that it does not and apparently cannot fully control. I understand that squeezeboxserver is an open source project that relies on volunteer contributions. That and its support for open audio formats like FLAC and Ogg Vorbis initially attracted me to it. But I've also dropped a fair chunk of change on Logitech's proprietary hardware players, and they're bricks without a working squeezeboxserver. I think Logitech owes its customers at least one working version of the server for each advertised platform that runs without constant attention from a local Perl hacker. Even when it does work, squeezeboxserver has always seemed much too slow for what it does. It seems to suffer from a serious case of feature bloat. All I've ever really wanted is a simple, fast and above all *reliable* way to play my large, multi-format music collection at home. Even a command-line interface would be enough. A barebones textual web interface would be a plus, along with the ability to stream a simple audio-over-HTTP feed. I certainly don't need RSS feeds scrolling across my player display, or dozens of other plugins and options of questionable utility. When I want to read the news I fire up Firefox on my laptop. It does a much better job. I really hate to say this but it's probably time to re-survey the network music player market for something that doesn't depend on unique client-server protocols, even when the server is open source. There's something to be said for widely implemented application protocols like HTTP even when they lack a feature you might think you could use someday. Sometimes all you really want is to play your music without first having to parse a Perl error traceback. ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

favorites.opml is just a text file. Likewise, SBS playlists are simple text files. They are just in very different formats. So you could open up a copy of your favorites.opml in a text editor and do a series of intelligent search-and-replace operations and end up with a valid playlist file, which you could then save with an m3u extension. Then copy it over to your SBS playlists folder, do a playlist rescan, and you're in business. -- aubuti aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88893 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Ripping to FLAC and making a copy that works with ITunes
Yet another vote for dbPowerAmp and MP3Tag. As to whether you want to leave your current iTunes files in AAC or convert, IMO depends... FLAC, PCM (Wav), and MP3 are decoded on the player. That means that the server is lightly loaded when handling these formats (not as simple as 'just pass the data through' but pretty close). Good if you're running a low-power server or a NAS. I dunno if the SongScanner works (or works well) with anything but these three 'native' formats. Anyone know? If you have to convert your files when you get them out of iTunes, then FLAC is a fine choice. There'll be no further loss in converting (wasted space, but storage is cheap). There will be further loss if you then convert those FLACs into a lossy format, so save the AACs, and mark the FLACs somehow. As far as ripping 200 CDs, dbPoweramp's got a batch ripper. I've used it to rip a couple thousand CDs (big project!). I'd suggest, if you have a laptop with a CD reader, use that; put it somewhere where you're going to be doing something else, like watching a movie, and just feed it a new CD when it sticks its tongue out at you. Of course, if you use the batch ripper, tags won't necessarily be just right, so I'd rip to just FLAC, fix-up tags, and then use the dpPoweramp converter converter (free with dbPA, and maybe free by itself) to convert to whatever other format you want -- bobkoure bobkoure's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14646 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88774 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I'm not sure iTunes does an AccurateRip (or something like it - no reason they couldn't as I'm sure apple has all the CRC data necessary). dbPoweramp can rip to Apple lossless if you care about this. Either way, the only issue is that you're doing AAC-PCM/FLAC conversion at playtime on the server. Probably not a big deal. As far as future proof, well, dbPoweramp's got a converter, so you can convert everything to FLAC (or other lossless format) without losing quality or tags. Basically, so long as you get a good rip into -some- lossless format, you won't have to rip those CDs again. -- bobkoure bobkoure's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14646 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88774 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

The good news is that you can use the infrared that comes with the Touch, which is also available as a separate item from Logitech in many countries. The bad news is that the UK doesn't appear to be one of those countries. If you can somehow get your hands on a Touch remote, that would be the easiest option. Thanks for the link, aubuti. I had forgotten about that URL. The .rpm link posted earlier by Ron (Vortexbox site) works with my Fuduntu rig. (Fedora core 14 based distro.) Thanks, Ron! In reference to pablolie's comment, I also recommend Ubuntu (or an Ubuntu derivative such as Mint Linux) to someone new to Squeezebox that wishes to set up a Linux server. Ubuntu is probably the path of least resistance. Nothing wrong with using Windows or Mac OSX for that matter. Other Linux/UNIX distributions are going to take much more work. I'm not sure it is worth it. I agree with some of what Phil says about feature bloat. Nothing wrong with Perl though -- that's bollocks. From what I've seen on other threads, Phil's library is huge, probably four standard deviations away from a typical use case. That doesn't excuse Logitech's many ongoing stumbles. Re: [slim] Squeezeboxserver on Linux broken
Hi, Pank. I spent a lot of time looking at Arch Linux, but I've moved elsewhere. I'm not very skilled in the compiling and building of software packages. Of course, I don't have to with Arch (but knowing how to helps). I was able to install squeezeboxserver from the AUR using yaourt. I want to return to Arch when my hacking skills have improved. For what it's worth -- and you probably know this already -- you can configure pacman to ignore specific packages you don't want upgraded. -- What makes Linux difficult, for me at least, are the different ways of initializing the system. Different systems have different commands for controlling the boot process. In that regard, I find Arch very understandable. However, I suspect they'll be forced to change their init system (eventually) to keep up with the times. I'm not really qualified to make that assertion, though. I played with Fedora 15 and I like it a lot. It boots quickly and I like GNOME 3. Controlling system services such as SB Server is straightforward. But there is a bunch of stuff I don't understand, like SELinux (I disabled it), and some of the codecs and stuff. For a music server, a lot of that doesn't matter. Currently looking a Fuduntu as a server base, but not sure it will make the cut. For better or worse, Squeezebox ownership has turned me into a Linux-obsessive. -- Danny8 #8194; Heh, heh. Au contraire. If you're running SBS with multiple Squeezeboxes then you're plenty techie enough :-) For Windows you want the one that says SqueezePlay: Windows Executable Installer. The filename is SqueezePlay-setup.exe -- aubuti aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88903 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Classic remote control
Have a look towards the bottom RHS of this page: http://www.logitech.com/en-gb/349/4876 It's fairly common for the IR emitter in the remote to suffer from a bad contact. You can test this by looking at it through a digital camera. The emitter will glow when operated viewed through the camera. If it doesn't the chances are one of the connections is bad. It's just a blob of solder to repair. -- rbz5416 rbz5416's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12089 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88900 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] sad day - dead SliMP3
had a lightning storm this afternoon that freaked out some of my networking and my original SliMP3 from nearly a decade ago looks like a casualty. It's stuck on Initializing... which from my searches indicated a flaked out microcontroller. All previous events like these were handled by slimdevices sending a replacement controller chip. Unfortunately those were done many years ago prior to the Logitech sale. I'm not going to punish myself by even attempting to call Logitech about a replacement chip. Am open to any other ideas and would gladly pay a repair fee to get it going again. -- twylie Synology DS-1010+ - transporter - Krell KRC2 - Classe CAM 350s - Von Schweikert VR-4 Gen III Thecus N5200 - SB3 - Mark Levinson 380 - nuforce 8Bs - Audio Physic Sparks Thecus N5200 - SB3 - Russound CAV6.6 and CAM6.6 - whole house audio Thecus N5200 - SliMP3 as a desk clock/thermometer :-) twylie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=956 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88909 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Server will not start with Lion

Re: [slim] SB3 Produces Nothing But Static
I've experienced this twice, maybe three times, on my Squeezebox 3. Each time it happened while I was listening to the radio. It just happened, no reason. It is -*very jarring,*- to say the least. For this reason, I try to keep my Squeezebox volume in the 80% range #8210; to limit speaker damage if it flakes out again. A little disturbing, knowing it can happen. Each time I had to unplug my Squeezebox and reboot. I did not have to do the extra step Toby mentions. It good to know about that anyway. A simple power off via remote never fixed it either. -- Danny8 #8194; Heh, heh.
