Re: [slim] General Issues / a bit of help please?

2011-07-29 Thread onemeg

After a few days where squeezecentre hasn't 'seen' the Touch on the
network, as soon as I slotted in the SD card we were up and running
again with the Touch happy to connect to the NAS and Squeezecentre
seeing it as a player.

I'm going to leave 'settings' pretty much much alone now before
desicing whether to update the server s/w.

Thx again for your guidance.

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88915

Question: Why recommend someone to get a Squeezebox ?

- Its excellent audio quality
- Best price/performance on the market
- Excellent hardware/software quality of the whole solution
- Great support for online streaming services
- Great support for browsing and playing local music
- The possiblity to extend it to multiple rooms later on
- Its support for third party plugins
- The possibility to directly interact with Logitech regarding new
  features/bugs
- This community and forum
- I wouldn't recommend a Squeezebox to anyone

 Good audio quality
 Good price/performance
 Good Hardware

 Software sucks

If you're on debian/ubuntu, no, there's no registry in linux.
Everything is a file there.

The places to check (and delete, if aubuti's advice to apt-get purge
leaves something behind) are:

Code:

  /etc/default/squeezeboxserver
  /etc/init.d/squeezeboxserver
  /etc/squeezeboxserver
  /usr/share/perl5/Slim
  /usr/share/squeezeboxserver
  /var/lib/squeezeboxserver

SqueezePad, iPeng for iPad, Squeezey, Squeezecast.

The last two only support either mp3 or FLAC files so the server is
forced to trancode heavily. Also both have them crash from time to time
(when I last tested them) and don't seem to be developed any further.

The first two support all kinds of codecs and are much more robust
regarding streaming. Both will make you very happy.

SqueezePad also supports gapless playback and full synchronisation,
don't know if that's needed for you.

Re: [slim] What's the Connection? Community and Logitech

2011-07-29 Thread Michael Herger
The ongoing 7.6 fiasco set me thinking. Just what is the connection
between this Forum and Logitech? Just seems that some posters here
seem to have 'insider' knowledge, and certainly the Logitech support
 staff often direct queries here.

Ok, here's my attempt of a reply:

These forums were built when SlimDevices was an independent company. It
was the main communication channel between SD and its clients. Some of us
would probably remember the times when all of this was still run on
mailing lists, and there were heated debates whether a web based solution
would be better to communicate with the community...

Years after Logitech acquired SD, they wanted to move everything over to
the official forums.logitech.com site, as a single point of contact. We
were able to convince them that this was a poor plan, because

a.) some community members are extremely helpful and more knowledgeable
than any hired support agent would ever be,
b.) the official forum software is lacking in features,
c.) there was no way they could handle the traffic of this forum, let
alone import the history,
d.) this was much more than a support channel. It's a community. A lot of
the postings aren't support requests, but discussions among community
members.

Thus it was decided that forums.slimdevices.com would stay as the
community forums, with no official logitech representatives, while over at
logitech.com support would be monitoring reports.

As some might have learned, even support accepts the community as more
knowledgeable and often refers clients over here...

i actually think it makes some sense for microsoft or google to buy

however, i think harmony remotes are basically obsolete. its already
the case that a lot of new products have remote apps run from tablets
and phones, etc... much better than even dedicated remotes. tivo has
a really cool app for instance. so do some TVs and receivers.

if the revue can bring droid and sbs/lms to your tv/stereo, i see real

Re: [slim] MonkeySqueeze

2011-07-29 Thread Gingernut63

@Echo

No need to change your present config. You can install Squeezebox
Server on the PC and run it at the same time as the version on your
NAS. When you wish to listen to music using MediaMonkey, run MM and the
PC version of Squeezebox Server and direct any Squeezebox devices to
connect to the PC server. Just make sure that the music library names
in each server are different. Also as indicated in the user guide the
PC version of Squeezebox server does not have to be linked to a library
folder just an empty folder. No need to wait for the library to load
into the server.

Remember the original configuration remains the same and not changed in
any way.

Hope you find this information helpful.

You can't replace IR remotes with Apps. An App is not responsive
enough.
The Apps excel at more complex tasks (browsing stuff, searching) but
they are an epic fail if you look at your TV screen and just want to
get rid of a lousy commercial ASAP since you first have to unlock your

I know lots of people with Harmony One's and wild horses wouldn't get

Developers would prefer no new products for two years so the existing

Sales marketing want a new product out every quarter to boost

I'm way over generalizing but you get the point. :)

So I'd bet sales management pressed for the release of SBS 7.6 way
before it was ready. Based on the recent info regarding Logitech (bad
earnings, CEO departs, bumbling Revue price slashed, etc...) I'd bet
sales management is scrambling to stop the bleeding and SBS 7.6 is a
part of that optimistic solution. So much so that it looks like the
next major release of SBS will be renamed LMS and will probably tie in
with video products, Revue and others. ;)

If one planned to get the Harmony 1000, it would maybe be smart to wait
for the lower priced Revue. If you planned to get the Harmony 900
because you need RF, the situation is also a bit different because
currently the 900 feels pretty expensive and even more so if you can
get a Revue with Wifi remote for $99

Maybe the Revue price drop could affect Harmony prices, but I don't
think so. When you read why they are dropping the Revue price you
realize it's because it's a new market and they want to establish the
product, this isn't they case for the Harmony remotes, they are already
in an established market and they have both fairly cheap and more
 expensive models.

Well, the Revue also has two hard button remote options: The Mini
Controller $129 and the Keyboard $99.
http://www.logitech.com/en-us/smartTV/accessories

They should lower the price of these accessories given that the Revue
has the same price or lower price than its accessories. I'm always
reluctant to get the first generation of any gadget because subsequent
generations usually have more functionality, have the bugs worked out
and are less expensive. That's the reason I did not jump at the Revue
in the first place. I considered it as a possible IR Universal Remote,
but at $249 it was out of the question. I'd still wait to see how the
Gingerbread update enhances the Revue/Google TV experience. I'm also
curious to find out if LMS will play a role as a media server for the
Revue.

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Music-Playback now on ANDROID! SqueezePlayer released to the market ...

2011-07-29 Thread bluegaspode

The official Logitech App won't work with SqueezePlayer.
Here the encrypted Spotify streams are sent directly to a Squeezebox,
SqueezePlayer cannot handle those encrypted streams.

The plugin from triode should work though. It sends FLAC to the player
which SqueezePlayer is able to decode.
Are you sure you used the correct Spotify menu (i.e. deinstalled the
Logitech App).

On a 7.5 server the Spotify menu from triode can be found under
'Radios' (if I'm not mistaken).
With a 7.6 server it should be under 'My Apps' as well.

[slim] Spotify 401 unathorized error

2011-07-29 Thread regalma1

I just subscribed to Spotify premium. I have been able to run it on all
my computers and my Droid. I set up my Touch with it. Everything seems
to run right but I can't access anything in Spotify. Whenever I do a
search of any type I get a 401 unathorized message. The computer I am
using runs Spotify directly just fine.

I am running Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium on a Toshiba laptop. My
Touch is connected via ethernet.

Anyone familiar with this problem?

[slim] SBS Why so much baggage as default?

2011-07-29 Thread cparker

Why is it that SBS doesnt install with all the plugins disabled? Its
really frustrating to have to abort the scanning process to remove
iTunes, MusicIP and about 15 other clutter plugins!

Wouldnt it be better to have a simple initial installation and give it
a clear run of a full scan with just the data you want in the database.
Then when users are more confident with the product they have the
choice to add plugins and bloat out the database ;)

Sorry for the moan :) So far 7.6 seems ok, nice job!

Re: [slim] SBS Why so much baggage as default?

2011-07-29 Thread JJZolx

MusicIP is loaded but not enabled by default. And the iTunes plugin
won't do anything unless you have an iTunes library and SBS finds that
library in an expected location.

I think the philosophy is to make many of the features offered by
plugins available by default rather than requiring new users to figure
out how to enable them. It's expected that the built-in plugins are
well tested enough to not cause problems with scanning or other server
operation.

But I'm like you. I only leave the following standard plugins enabled.

- Date and Time
- Extension Downloader
- Random Mix
- Rescan Music Library

track or change the volume, as firing up iPeng/SqueezePad/Controller

That's when I use the Harmony remote, the Controller is to far away
since I need to have it in the dock for it to have battery when I need
it and the Controller dock is not standing in the middle of my living
room table. The Harmony on the other hand is placed on the living room
table. The Harmony needs to go into its charge station with a few weeks
interval, but its battery consumption is no where near the Controller.

Besides this, the Controller isn't able to switch output on my Sherwood
amplifier and doesn't understand that it should change the volume on the
Sherwood amplifier and not on the Squeezebox Touch.

And on top of this, even if the Controller was able to solve the above,
it won't enter my living room table as their is only place for one
remote there and the Controller is never going to be able to control
all my other IR based devices in a user friendly way, too few hard
buttons on it to make that possible.

I could think of mixing:
- A simple Harmony for simple duties
- An iPhone/iPad app with a IR blaster system for more complex
operations

The problem is just that any non geeky IR blaster system I've seen so
far has been more expensive than the a Harmony remote which can solve
all the needs.

Maybe the $99 Revue with included IR-blasters could be an option, if
Logitech would sell it outside US.

I quote:

The company now plans to *improve its remote control* and set-top-box
product line and establish itself in the business to business market.
*Logitech also plans to improve its digital music offerings* and focus
on peripherals for tablet devices like the Apple iPad.

I wonder what this means, doesn't sound too bad :-)
Not sure if it's just something the article author has made up, but it
sounded like it was something coming from a reliable source.

Of course, digital music doesn't have to mean Squeezebox.

Re: [slim] Logitech CEO Steps down

2011-07-29 Thread JJZolx

Logitech built its success on -peripherals-. With the old CEO back in
charge I would expect a return to that rather than throwing
considerably more money into either the Revue or Squeezebox, both of
which require a fair amount of dedicated marketing. They also require a
sizable shift in consumers' perception of Logitech itself, and that
doesn't happen quickly. Expect more iPod/iPad docks and speakers.
Acquiring someone like Audioengine would make 10x as much sense for
them as continuing Squeezebox development.

With a little luck, maybe they'll sell off the Squeezebox product line.
Few of the positive predictions for Logitech Squeezebox ever came to
pass. The economies of scale and Logitech's buying and manufacturing
prowess never really brought down pricing. The development and QA teams
were greatly expanded for a while, but they burned up all of their
energy shoving new products out the door.

But with new technology and new devices come new types of peripherals.
The key is to follow, not to lead. Logitech has made their money by

There are at least two other ways to move players from one server to
another: the player menu UI and via the CLI. Have you tried those?

I seem unable to deduce your point. When I want to move players to
another server, I go to the new server's WebUI and press the players
button. Normally, when the source SBS is active, I can use this method.
It is not available at this time.

BTW, 7.6 was still 'Pre-caching artwork' 15 hours later. Tremendous
performance there !

I sure would like to divert to one of my backup SBS machines.

As an IT person for decades I cannot imagine the incompetence that led
 to the GA of 7.6

My experience was horrible too. I went back to 7.54 until the bugs get
worked out. I used 7.6 on Windows Home Server with 3 players
(Transporter, Duet, Touch). All three updated their firmware without
problem, but all the artwork was lost, the web-based interface was
FUBAR (doubled text, unreadable menus), Trackstat ratings wouldn't
display, and I got numerous hangs in the middle of songs. Other
problems too, but now I don't remember them all.

I gave up after a day. Maybe the next release will be more robust.
I've been through 2-3 years of updates and this is the first one that
really hammered my system. Glad I could go back and get everything
working again.

Re: [slim] Rhapsody no longer plays on Squeezebox Classic

2011-07-29 Thread William Szostak

I can confirm that the bug is somehow related to the wireless bridge
settings.

Even though I was NOT and never have used the wireless bridging option,
when I connected an ethernet cable and explicitly disabled wifi
bridging, it solved the problem.

I had the same symptoms that others have reported.

I have a Squeezebox Classic, and when the problem started, I was
running Squeezebox Server 7.4. (Not sure what firmware version I
had.)

A couple weeks ago, Rhapsody stopped working.
All other apps worked fine.
In Rhapsody, I could browse/search for albums/tracks, make a selection,
it would say it was buffering, then act like it was playing, but no
sound.
I tried switching from Squeezebox Server to mysqueezebox.com, but it
didn't help.

I upgraded to the latest version of Squeezebox Server - v 7.6 -
r32854.
Reading the release notes from 7.5, and seeing there was fix for
Rhapsody, I was hopeful that this would fix the problem.

After the server upgrade, my Squeezebox automatically updated to
firmware version 137.

I tried Rhapsody - no dice.
Same exact symptoms: I could connect and browse, but no music!

After reading this forum, I decided to try plugging in an ethernet
cable and disabling wireless bridging.

Now here's the thing: I have never used wireless bridging. I have only
connected my Squeezebox to my LAN wirelessly. I did not have an
ethernet cable plugged in. By definition, wireless bridging is all
about bridging a wireless connection with a wired one. To use it, you
have to have a wired ethernet connection to some other device! Not
having an ethernet cable plugged in, I did not think the comments about
wireless bridging would be relevant to my setup. But I didn't know what
else to try, so...

I plugged in the ethernet cable, connected it to my router, held down
the left arrow to re-do the network setup, chose No on the wireless
bridge option, and after going through the rest of the setup, Rhapsody
worked!

I immediately disconnected the ethernet cable, and Rhapsody continues
to work with no problems.

So if you are only using wireless, don't worry: you don't need to keep
the cable connected permanently. You just have to plug it in long
enough to re-do the networking setup.

Hokie, thank you so much for the tip. I will add a comment to the bug
you logged.

Mcoste and IceFusion, thanks for your posts. I wouldn't have expected
the wifi bridging to be the problem in my case since I wasn't using it,
but your posts saying that you needed to connect an ethernet cable to
disable bridging convinced me to try it.
