Re: [slim] How does Apple AirPlay compare to SqueezeBox in functionality?
In our holiday flat I use Spotify on iPad streamed to an Airport Express. By and large this works fine except for The Airport Express keeps disappearing from the network. It takes a power cycle for it to reappear. This is a known problem. If your iThing dings and peeps when emails etc. arrive, this will be broadcast over the top of your music. If you are using your iThing for other things while listening, expect to lose your music if the app/web page you are using takes over the sound card. [slim] Customising the display on Players
On players with a one line display (Squeezeboxes, Transporter, Boom) you can customise the display e.g. TRACKNUM. TITLE - ARTIST - ALBUM (YEAR) But it seems that on players with a three line display (Radio, Controller, etc.) you get three fixed lines TITLE, ARTIST, ALBUM with no way to customise. And also on the WebUI and (for example) iPeng you also only get TITLE, ARTIST, ALBUM. Question: is it correct that the display on three line players and remote UIs is hardwired? Or is there some hidden way to customise it? Would it be possible to have the three lines displaying (say) TRACKNUM. TITLE, ARTIST, ALBUM (YEAR) ?? I just realized that one thing that I'll miss in substituting iDevice for SB is the favorites. Is there an app for iDevice that aggregates favorites across different services in the same way that the favorite function of mysqueezebox (or LMS) does? Conceptually, I think it can be done through the OS's share function. If done properly, such favorites aggregator can be even more versatile than mysb.com's favorite, as it can collect tracks or album from non-streaming service such as Shazam (music search app). Re: [slim] Customising the display on Players
The classic players have a dot matrix display, not a one line display, and can be made, through settings and/or plugins to display anything you want. The remote features a size button that switches between three different display modes (or layouts), but via plugins you can do anything. The web settings allows you to set your default track information and you can use variables to affect what is displayed and how. You can define various sets of information and then configure each player's output to be uniquely different from what is displayed in the web UI if you want. If done properly, such favorites aggregator can be even more versatile than mysb.com's favorite, as it can collect tracks or album from non-streaming service such as Shazam (music search app). The simple answer is no. There is no iOS generic share function. The share popups that you see from the builtin apps are not configurable by third party code, you can't change the list of things that you can share to within those builtin popups. Communicating between apps on iOS is very restricted. All you can really do is use the URL schema functionality to publish/subscribe to urls. So for example app A could register to handle urls staring with myappa: and other apps could link to urls in that format which open app A. It is up to app A to define what is contained in the url and what it means. You could in theory use that approach to create a favourites aggregator. But only if all the apps whose favourites you wanted to aggregate built in support for your url schema for saving favourites and also had their own schemas for launching favourites. Which just isn't going to happen. A similar scheme would be more workable on Android, but again only with the co-operation of all the third party apps/services you wanted to support. andynormancx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17417 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96726 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

It's such a nuisance... But yes. Most things work in landscape mode now. You can bring down the player control, you can select players... NowPlaying screen is still a screen saver but there are gestures for next/previous skipping (swipe left/right) How about an option to remove the volume slider at the bottom? That will remove a totally useless UI element and make more room on the screen. I actually thought about it for iPhone 4. It's still not enough room for the whole title, though (only half of what's required). Also, you are very wrong about it being useless: hardware volume buttons Except for iPeng as a player, these can go away any moment! It's a feature completely forbidden by Apple. It works because I bind it to the volume of the device itself which is not actually redefining the functionality but Apple might still change their mind on it at any time! So better not to talk about it too much, especially not advertise it... That aside: it's not nearly exact enough. It only changes volume in steps of +/- 5 (if used with iPeng Playback it's even +/- 10 because that's what iOS does). At low volumes that's definitely not fine enough, at least with good headphones, here I frequently even use the 1 volume level. The same is true for a lot of docks or external amps connected to the Squeezeboxes that have a non-linear scale and need very fine volume tuning. Actually I found that for some reason most people don't use the volume buttons at all. volume buttons on headphones Not on all headphones, same problem volume buttons on speaker dock volume knob/buttons on amplifier Sorry, iPeng is a REMOTE CONTROL. Walking up to a device to change the volume is a most definite no-go. I'd also love to see the YEAR of the album displayed. Hm. Might think about that one. Did anybody ever file a ticket for this? It was asked for for the album display (the content of an album) and it's showing there now. Does this new version of iPeng preserve one's customized menu along the bottom? Even when iPeng doesn't connect to the server right away? It always did. It just changes while you are not connected (it can't show empty tabs) and changes back to what you configured when you reconnect to the server unless you make manual changes in which case iPeng can't know you didn't mean it. I always use iPeng with 3 or 4 different servers and it always comes back to my manually configured setup that's only available on my main server when I connect, this actually works very well. I know that because I have a menu on there (Audiobooks) that's a CustomBrowse menu and only available on that server. pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96679 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] iPeng 2.0 Teaser Thread
Do you store different configurations of iPeng's icon row depending on the server one is connected to? If not, then the user's choice should be reflected as soon as the app loads - it looks strange having the icons suddenly change. Also, when we dismiss the tips/help one time, will they now stop coming back? With the previous/current releases I can't remember how many different times I have to cancel/dismiss the tips/help. Here's my situation for the volume control: When I'm using iPeng as a player, I never use the slider for volume. Either the iPhone is locked and one doesn't have access to the screen anyway, so the hardware buttons are used. If I wake the display, I continue to use the hardware buttons because that's what I was already using. If the phone is docked, then the docks I use already have more easily reached volume controls that work whether the screen is on or off - or the iPhone is being remotely controlled with the dock's remote or another instance of iPeng. If the phone is being used as a remote it means I'm primarily controlling my hifi system and I keep Squeezebox output fixed at 100% - why would I use the volume control on a source component when that's the job of the pre-amp? The volume is controlled only via the pre-amp and/or a universal controller. I suggested it as an OPTION so if someone wants to continue to use the on-screen slider they can feel free to do so. I do realize that Apple's own music app also features an on-screen volume slider, but that App is so poorly designed I don't know where to start. For regular music playback I tend to use CarTunes already, which while not perfect, is a lot better than the stock player app. What bugs me the most about the standard playback app/infrastructure is the complete lack of a now-playing playlist which can be modified on the fly. It's full albums or nothing right now. Which I believe is one of the reasons you're seeing some people asking for playback of local music. You really should consider taking your UI and refining it into another app for local playback. It will be quite a bit of additional work, but I think there's a good market for alternative music players. Most of the third-party ones are very (very) bad. For someone else, there is no new user that doesn't know about the hardware volume buttons on the phone. That's frankly a little preposterous, since the hardware buttons are the primary way, the de-facto way, to adjust volume on the iPhone. If not, then the user's choice should be reflected as soon as the app loads - it looks strange having the icons suddenly change. It does so as soon as it can but not all menus are available on all servers so iPeng can't put them there until the menu gets available. No albums, artists, whatever on MySqueezebox.com, Spotify et al. are even per-player menus. As soon as the menu gets available, it gets moved in place. Also, when we dismiss the tips/help one time, will they now stop coming back? With the previous/current releases I can't remember how many different times I have to cancel/dismiss the tips/help. Once per tip. Which version are you using? Are you maybe using a jailbreak that prevents iPeng from storing any settings in it's user defaults? That would also explain why you can't keep the button bar as it's supposed to be. iPeng never brings up the popup automatically again after you've seen it once, unless there is a major release change (2.0 will bring them back the first time since 1.2, I believe). Here's my situation for the volume control: snip Yes, I understand that. However, it's not everybody's situation I suggested it as an OPTION so if someone wants to continue to use the on-screen slider they can feel free to do so. I understand. But first: you know how I think about options: iPeng does already have too many of them (I'm happy to have been able to remove one in iPeng 2.0) And then: what do I put there when the slider is gone? It's either something that's not necessary or something that needs an alternative place when the slider IS present. I seriously considered to remove the slider (actually the whole lower bar) for iPeng 2.0 on 3,5 devices but found it too cumbersome to bring it back and it needed to be the full bar to make any sense. The slider alone is only big enough for a single row of text. For someone else, there is no new user that doesn't know about the hardware volume buttons on the phone. That's frankly a little preposterous, since the hardware buttons are the primary way, the de-facto way, to adjust volume on the iPhone. You are the first one in a while to tell me he's using separate control. No I don't know of that option (you can remove it!) I open the players pop-up and hit the discrete volume buttons for the player I want (I only had 2 players with digital volume control, with whit I can use the slider: 1 Boom, 1SB3) I think it's quite accessible, either on iPad or iPhone. I adjust volumes separately because one volume press up or down does not have the same effect on each amp (differences in amps, in IR blaster settings), and in general I want to keep the source in the room I am in front, and have the other players in the other rooms in the background. You can't get that with the group slider. Also, when an IR blaster player is grouped with a digital attenuation player, results are rarely what I want: on my amps w/ IR Blaster I didn't get repeat presses to work, so the group will quickly unbalance. Usually with the IR-blaster controlled amp reduced to a very low volume, and the digital attenuation player at expected volume. And sometimes the other way around (much worse!) epoch1970's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16711 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96679 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

The notable exception appears to be the Arcam device - no surprise there, given this presentation is from Arcam. Bottom line as I read things: it is possible to implement an audio interface over HDMI well, but very few manufacturers do. Therefore developing a source component with audio out on HDMI is inviting it to be partnered with devices that are likely to make a hash of things. If someone were to build a new generation of Squeezebox type players (which is where this thread started), we'd better pray that HDMI isn't the ONLY digital output it offers. cliveb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=348 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96660 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

@epoch You should give the group volume slider a try. It's not a fixed volume changer but changes each players volume based on its current volume level. It works surprisingly well. pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96679 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Digital out via HDMI may well be convenient, but I am worried about its merits. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that the jitter levels of typical HDMI implementations are catastrophically high. Regular readers here will know that I am sceptical about the significance of jitter, but even I would baulk at the thought of using an interface which typically exhibits jitter at the thousands of pS level. Properly implemented asynchronous USB seems to be the future interface of choice (although I personally am happy with SPDIF). I may be spoilt by the meridian HD621 hdmi audio processor! That deals with most of this . And it is a fixable problem , a good hdmi implementation would deal with it . Compare the situation with USB interface a surprisingly large amount of them or not very good, but there is a large portion of well implemented solutions ,this was not the case a couple of years ago . The fact that audiophiles seems to praise *every* USB input is another issue ? I suppose well implement hdmi will be more common in the future . Beside if you heard a good discrete multichannel recording the jitter discussion would fade :) that is a big difference in my world. And due to varius paranoia at the content providers hdmi is the only standard consumer interface that offers discrete multichannel , so that is what we have like it or not . I could use one of my leftover MHR inputs for 3*spdiff in my processor but that is hardly standard ? Not many processor or ht reciever has such inputs . OT if I want to listen to my DVDA discs on my system I use a MHR interface ( 3*spdiff with proprietary meridian protocol ) And not hdmi from my DVDA player to my processor, this interface was invented before the hdmi standard offered this. Anyone know of any particular chip sets that are ideally suited? And since we are on the topic of HDMI - what about a WiDi / Miracast implementation? So an ideal all digital device - transcoding only, no decoding - would have asynchronous usb, toslink, coax for digital only, and a good implementation of HDMI, and an IR blaster - all for less than $500... sound maybe doable? I would buy such a thing. ninthsrw's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=57550 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96660 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] iPeng 2.0 Teaser Thread
I love volume control the way you have it. I hope you don't remove the slider. I've often wondered why SB Touch doesn't have an option to show the year of the album on the default Now Playing screen. I would love to see it on iPeng. [slim] Music system for a disabled person?
I have an uncle with cerebral palsy. When he was young, the doctors told him he wouldn't live to 40. He celebrated his 80th birthday a few years ago. His mind is still sharp, and he loves music. Today I was talking to my aunt and uncle about how much he loves music. They say he has stacks of CDs but the attendants at his nursing home won't put them on for him. He has very limited mobility and his speaking is not clear. One of my cousins was wanting to get him something like an iPad but I don't think that will work for him because his mobility is so erratic. There's no way he could push the home button on an iPad and even if his voice was clear enough to use voice control you still have to be able to push the button. Just to give you an idea of his limitations... he can't operate the remote control for the TV anymore. He may be able to use something with voice control if the commands were simple and it didn't require a precise gesture to activate. I thought I would ask you people if you had any ideas about a music system that might work for him. I'd be thrilled to rip his CD collection and set something up for him but I don't know what would work and be simple enough for him to control. I also don't think a networked system would work because he's in a nursing home. Any ideas or leads? (Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk. Please pardon any typos!) Re: [slim] Music system for a disabled person?
I have virtually no experience with this, but I wonder if the XBox 360 and Kinect combination might be made to work for him. I don't own one but I know it has both voice and gesture control support. Might be too fussy/fiddly, and I don't even know if there's a good music browsing interface but I assume there must be. Whatever the case, that's tough. Kudos to you for trying to give him some independence. azinck3's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3967 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96739 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Music system for a disabled person?
Sounds like fine motor skills are limited? A switch enabled mp3 player is probably what you need. There are adapter(s) that interface with (older) iPods or dedicated switch players. If a computer is the desired option then you could pair it with a darci switch box + switches + some morse code will give him basic access. The darci emulates a keyboard so if you teach him some morse he could play, pause skip, open, close etc any program that supports keyboard shortcuts. I think the Apple music application in iOS has switch access but I don't know for sure. Ipeng supports Voice over, usually it then can also be accessed via switch. My advice is to talk to an occupational therapist who works with this type of assistive tech- it will be worth it johnas's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=31930 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96739 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

It's pretty hard to find anything that is competitive with the product that Logitech killed. You would think the invisible hand of the market would come to the rescue, but results so far are not positive. Perhaps there really isn't a big enough market for this stuff, but I see increasing interest and awareness from so many on-line tech sites and forums, which makes me think more people know and care about this stuff than ever before. dsdreamer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12588 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96660 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
