Kernel compile shenanigans over, I don't give praise lightly, but need to say this. From the perspective of UAC2, *the Wandboard is a fantastic piece of kit*. I'm sitting here, streaming at 384k via the USB port, while running a continuous squeezelite compile in a tight loop, (while (true); do make -j3 clean make -j3; done). At close to 100% CPU, no XRUN's, no clicks, pops, drops, artifacts... Sure, it's a PREMPT kernel and the squeezelite output thread is running at PRI 46. The alsa buffer needs increasing a little once we go over 192k, (-a 40:::), but that's it. Perfect! I have a UAC1 device on the way for testing. Has everyone else who has ordered a Wandboard so far gone for the dual core model? Anyone ordered the single proc / 512MB? If not, I'll order one so I have both for testing purposes. Where I work it is often [company name] + [vaguelly relevant acronym] + [number ,usually higher than the predecessor ] company name sends a message directly , so it helps . You could also include a hint to the principles of operation or physical atribute if they are kind of novel or cool Jet powered compact . Or hint at the result or design goals , like a really silent vacuum cleaner that has silent in the name . In that realm I Think names such as Transporter or Touch works really well , Squeezebox is just as silly as our jokes but we got used to it . It's a shame though that because it uses the Tenor chipset it lacks 88.2kHz support. The M2Tech HiFace 2 is probably the next best step up from this before getting into the more esoteric interfaces. It's a real shame that the Empirical Audio Off Ramp 5 uses the HiFace (1) chipset for USB audio input, which is no good for Linux, as this would be pretty much perfect otherwise as it also offers LVDS I2S output which is really hard to find on other interfaces. paulster's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=23073 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=97721 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

In order to do balanced will take more than one DAC chip. That brings up how this is to be done. If I use two chips, and have them feed the XLR, do I run one of them to the RCAs in parallel, or have three DAC chips, one for RCA and two for balanced. Or do we have just one on the board going to RCAs and any other configuration done with daughter boards. I'm leaning towards the daughter board concept, it keeps the base configuration simple, then we can come up with multiple add on boards, such as balanced, multi-channel etc, I2S over LVDS etc. But then we have to come up with a back panel that has a removeable cover plate where the daughter board connectors go. It's definately not going to happen in Gen0.5, but certainly worth looking at for Gen1. John S. [slim] Community Squeezebox: The Name Vote (Round 1)
A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=98148 Question: What should we call this new device? - Vuvuzela - OpEncore - Melodia - Zela - Brikk - FLÄKK - Open Music Box After weeks of deliberation, fighting and lobbying, the public have narrowed down the suggestions for the (potential) Community-Funded Squeezebox to 7 choices. Nobody likes most of them, and plenty despise all of them. This hasn't stopped most democratic countries from stumbling along, and neither will it stop us. So without further adieu, here we have The Vote (Round 1*). The nominations are... *Vuvuzela *- You probably know that squeezebox is also a colloquial term for an accordion, so it stands to reason that its spiritual offspring should also be named after an instrument. Clarinet? Harpsichord? No, let's go with the Vuvuzela; infamously known for being the prevalent sound of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, who's distraction caused insert your team to bow out prematurely. (Suggested by castalla) *OpEncore *- Blending two words together is cool. Encore means again in French, and is often used to entice performers back onto stage at the end of a musical event. It may be subtle, but it strikes parallels with the aims of this project, and of course the new device will be open-source. Open - Encore - OpEncore. (Suggested by erland/simbo) *Melodia *- Melodies are nice, and as it happens Melodia means pleasant song in Latin, which also makes us sound clever and little pretentious. But this is a music playing device, it comes with the territory. (Suggested by erland) *Zela *- A play on the oh-so-popular Vuvuzela (see above) but without the connotations of a tinnitus-like buzz that you still can't get out of your head three years on. But it's also a nice word in itself and rolls off the tongue well. It's also so tenuous you can explain it to your mates down the pub time and time again. (Suggested by simbo) *Brikk *- Perhaps a nod to the final resting state of the GEN1 models, it also nicely describes its purpose - a solid-looking box that sits near your HiFi and acts as the cornerstone of your home music solution. It's based on a minimal ubuntu 12.10 rootfs, (ubuntu-12.10-r3-minimal-armhf-2013-01-12), so its ARM7 and hard float. Being minimal it doesn't have all the gui bloat of the official Wandboard ubuntu image and is more optimised for the hardware. The kernel, I have custom compiled so USB audio is available from the get go. Code: dd if=wandboard-squeezelite-20130219.img of=/dev/sdX bs=1M gunzip the img.gz. Replace /dev/sdX (above) with the deviceId of the sdcard. dd to your mini sdcard. Put in the slot on the cpu board, not the carrier board. Plug in network cable. Power on. Wait 30 secs. Router should give a dhcp address to eth0. Go to your router to find out what address it has given. Then ssh into it. User: ubuntu Password: temppwd. In ubuntu user home dir, squeezelite-1.0 src dir. All needed dependencies to build and run installed. eg. libflac-dev, libmad0-dev, etc, etc. It is built, but 'make clean make' and it will build again. Also in the user dir, kernel-3.0.35.tgz contains the ubootable kernel image I built, (uImage), the modules (in a tgz) and the config that was used to compile it from the wandboard-sdk. I probably won't have any more time to spend tinkering with the Wandboard until the weekend, so that's it for now. JackOfAll, Great work!! I am too waiting for the Wandboard from Digikey. I am really excited to see how this plays out. John, if all goes well with the Gen.5 board would you be looking for testers and producing a larger batch or are you going to limit them to you, JackOfAll, and Triode? JohnSwenson wrote: Since I'm going to start designing the Gen0.5 boards in couple days, I wanted to go into a little detail on what I'm planning on doing and what the specific goals are for this board. So if there are changes desired I can get the concepts in before I get too far in the board design. As I see it there are three goals for Gen0.5: 1; Get a working linux distro that can be put on the SD card that includes what of linux is needed, and Squeezelite. So that when Gen1 comes out it can do SOMETHING out of the box. 2; test out both USB ports configured as host ports, see what works, what doesn't and if the two ports behave the same or not. 3; get drivers working that can talk to the DAC chip and S/PDIF out. Drivers currently exist that can send out I2S and S/PDIF, we need to make sure they can work with our hardware, and what may be the most difficult part, handle an external MCLK source and select between clock frequencies for the different sample rate families. I'm planning on the Gen0.5 board being very simple and inexpensive, something that I can solder by hand. The board fab I use makes three copies of the board, so we will have three boards. I'm planning on the board having the following: EDM connector, Ethernet connector(gigabit), two full size USB type A connectors, DAC chip driving two RCA jacks, TOSLINK S/PDIF out, two oscillators with appropriate audio frequencies, clock mux, I2S and S/PDIF reclocking flops, clock driver for the module and voltage regulators. No wifi, no headphone. Just enough to test out the software for the three interfaces (USB, I2S to DAC and S/PDIF) I am NOT going to be doing any of the fancy very low noise ground plane schemes, super low noise regulators etc. This is not being designed to get the best sound, but to be a platform for initial software development. Gen1 will have those things. As mentioned I'm trying to keep this phase as simple as possible. All the rest of the development will take place in Gen1. I'm trying to prevent creeping featurism in this phase. Does anybody have any changes they would like to make to this, either goals or hardware? Thanks, John S. I don't know what the US pricing looks like, ($20 difference according to the WandBoard website), but over here the dual is 16 EURO more than the solo. So, 16 EURO more for 2nd processor core, additional 512MB RAM, bluetooth, wifi There seems to be little point buying anything other than the dual. Earlier, I was going to buy a solo, but it now seems to be very poor value for money compared to the dual. My thinking is that this isn't really a bargain basement project where absolutely every penny needs to count. So I wonder if we should just say the dual is our base model and ignore the fact that the solo exists? From a support (and ease of use) point of view, having an on board integrated wi-fi solution seems to be preferable when it comes to having it working out of the box, rather than individual users choosing their own USB wi-fi dongles which may or may not have working Linux drivers. It's a real shame that the Empirical Audio Off Ramp 5 uses the HiFace (1) chipset for USB audio input, which is no good for Linux, as this would be pretty much perfect otherwise as it also offers LVDS I2S output which is really hard to find on other interfaces. Re: [slim] Community Funded Squeezebox Replacement - Would you be interested?
I have been following this thread with interest. I don't know if you are familiar with the microcore linux, but maybe you should consider it for the basis of the new player. Microcore linux is a small linux (basis is only 8-12 MB), but it is possible to add the packages that you need. It is so small that it can be running entirely in RAM, and therefore no writing to the SD-card is done. You only write to the SD-card when you tell it to do so In addition, everytime it boots it is a fresh start, and the extensions and changes are added to the core, so there is no risk of corruption of the system or the card. I have build a small squeezelite player with microcore linux for the raspberry which is only 25 MB in total. http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?97803-piCoPlayer-Squeezelite-on-Microcore-linux-An-embedded-OS-in-RAM-with-Squeezelite There seems to be ports to other ARMS as well - maybe it is worth considering? Have you seen my posts earlier in the thread on wifi? I found a nice little module that connects via ethernet to the processor, it just looks like another device on the lan. It has its own web server for configuration and can either be a client on an existing network, or it can be its own AP/DHCP server. (it even has a simple router) With this you don't have to have a driver on the processor AT ALL, no WPA suplicant etc., all that is taken care of in the module. It has its own switch on board and can be used as a bridge for other devices. With this functionality you can have a wired connection to a server, and it can be its own little network for handling iPeng etc, no need to even have your own existing wifi network. I was planning on having a socket for this module on the Gen1 and up board, because it is just like having an external bridge on the lan there is no need to have it on the Gen0.5 John S.
