Re: [slim] Microwave oven interference
I always had a problem with my Linksys WAP54G access point getting clobbered by the microwave. Not only would the Squeezebox on top of the microwave lose connection, but the Squeezebox and Wii in the next room would lose connection as well as any other device on the network. I picked up an Asus RT-AC68U router and believe it or not the microwave no longer interferes with the wireless. Netflix on the Wii plays just fine as does the Squeezebox on top of the microwave itself. Phones and tablets in the house use the 5GHz band so those are completely unaffected now. 4mula1's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3439 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=103261 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] SB3 died on me
After 8 years (or so) my SB3 died on me. It starting having issues playing mp3s (flac played fine) where it would reboot. A lot. I knew it was risky, but I figured since flac files were playing fine but mp3s weren't I'd force a firmware update. It downloaded the firmware, rebooted, and never came back up. Re: [slim] Backing up Flac files to external hard drive
Espen's point about an off-site backup is something most people overlook but incredibly important in the event of something catastrophic happening at your house. Think about this: A fire breaks out and your house is a total loss. You're computer with your digital collection is now a pile of ash, as are your boxes of stored CDs. That external disk was a great idea until it also burned in the fire. Re: [slim] Anyone using Deltacopy for backup's?
One thing to consider about any backup program is that when you host the source and backup on the same machine when the backup runs the computer has to examine both the source and destination files for changes, which will eat a lot of CPU and I/O time. Using DeltaCopy in a client/server configuration with another computer will yield better results, as each machine can examine the files they host and compare the results. If you rely on the tags that EAC provides you will, sooner or later, find things that aren't right. There are very few tags from freedb that I get that I don't change for one reason or another. I have a very tight grip on my tags and have very few issues. As snarlydwarf alluded to about bad tags: garbage in, garbage out. MP3Tag is free and very easy to use. Re: [slim] Thank You Slimdevices / Logitech Community
One more post of praise for SD/Logi: My old DVR died on me last week and the replacement I got was a bit of an upgrade. The two ethernet ports on the back caught my eye. After a little internet searching I found out that they are functional and what I can use them for. Dug up my crossover cable and plugged it into the DVR and SB3 sitting on top of my DVR. It took me awhile to figure out how to enable bridging (it's in the setup stupid!) and once I got it everything works like it should. I knew the bridging feature was a good design choice and could be very handy. Now I know how handy it is! -- 4mula1 SqueezeCenter 7.3.1 + Solaris 10 x86: Because everything else would've been easy! Re: [slim] Configuring a wireless router as an access point
Same story here. When I bought my mom an SB3 I picked up a Linksys WRT54G. What I needed was an AP+switch, not a router. The dsl modem they have (same model I have) handles DHCP so I disabled it in the wireless router. All I did was plug the dsl modem and PC into the LAN ports and I was in business. The biggest thing is to disable the DHCP server on the wireless router if you have one already running on your LAN. -- 4mula1 SqueezeCenter 7.3.1 + Solaris 10 x86: Because everything else would've been easy! Kyle;387420 Wrote: If I plug the CAT-5 coming from my other router and the CAT-5 going to my SB3 into the LAN connections, then the SB3 works fine, and I can sign onto my network and control the SB3 with my laptop, but I have no internet connection. This could be as simple as needing a crossover cable. It looks like you're using a standard patch cable to connect one router to another, which may or may not work, depending on whether either of the routers have autosensing ethernet ports. The ports on a ethernet hub or switch are wired differently that a PC network card or your Squeezebox so that the send and receive pins are matched up when using a standard patch cable. When you have two devices that are wired the same, like two routers, you need a crossover cable, a special cable that makes the pin swap for you. There is still no need to configure your new router as a router. Make sure it has a unique IP address outside of the range your DHCP server hands out, and disable DHCP on it. There is still the issue of the crossover cable above. -- 4mula1 SqueezeCenter 7.3.1 + Solaris 10 x86: Because everything else would've been easy! [slim] Softsqueeze and SSH keypairs
I've been a longtime Softsqueeze user using ssh just using password authentication. I'd like to lock down my server a little tighter and go to keypairs only, but Softsqueeze isn't going along with the program. If I set it to use a private key I generated with Putty it always prompts me for my password. Using the passphrase for the key fails, but if I use my password like I was before, it works. Since I've disabled password logins via ssh I am having to run Putty with the appropriate tunnels for Softsqueeze to work which is hardly ideal. Before anyone has to point it out, yes, I know that Softsqueeze is being deprecated and will be replaced by Squeezeplay. Squeezeplay has a fatal flaw for me in that it needs udp for discovery (at this time) and ssh only tunnels tcp. In trying to wean my mom off of her boombox and onto her Squeezebox, I got to thinking what it would really take. I'm slowly getting her to rip her CDs so eventually she will quit using the CD player but she still listens to the local radio station(s) that have no internet stream. I've looked at the RadioShark but the reviews seem so-so and I want a really dead simple solution that doesn't have any complex dependencies. I really don't want to get a TV card for their PC just for FM. How much interest from a consumer (not business) standpoint would there be for a standalone network FM tuner? Re: [slim] possible to reach mp3 files from outside my network?
Connecting remotely is fairly easy to do, but it is highly recommended that you use ssh or some sort of vpn to protect your network at home. I've done ssh on Windows in the past and it's not that difficult to do. http://sshwindows.sourceforge.net/ As far as having a static ip address goes, use a service like dyndns.org if you don't have or can't get one. I used it for awhile and it works well, although a static ip address is always the best. You will need to assign your SqueezeCenter box a static ip address within your own network so that any port forwarding done by your router goes to the right place. Just make sure that it's out of the range of addresses being handed out by your dhcp server. SoftSqueeze works well for remote playing and has a built in ssh client so you don't need a seperate program to create your tunnels. -- 4mula1 SqueezeCenter 7.2 + Solaris 10 x86: Because everything else would've been easy! Re: [slim] LAME What is it? Why do I need it?
I use Lame to transcode my flac file to mp3 for streaming from home to work because my bandwidth can't support streaming flac. Transcoding is set on a per-player basis, and is by default set to not transocde. If you're at work and using Softsqueeze but don't have the bandwidth to stream lossless set the bitrate limiting for that player only and your music will be converted from lossless to mp3. I use rsync on the Solaris box and SyncBack on the Windows box to backup to the Slug. I eventually picked up another Slug and installed it at my parent's house, again unslung, running ssh and rsync to have a remote backup. All of their pictures and such are backed up to the Slug at their place, which is then mirrored on mine. If a file gets accidentally deleted or corrupted I'm still screwed, but if my house goes up in flames I still have a copy of my data someplace else. I don't think you can use the web UI to skip ahead in a track. I certainly can't test it now since I'm at work and everything streamed here is transcoded... Two ways to see if a player is getting a transcoded stream: In the web UI (specifically the Fishbone skin) the current track will show the title and artist and if transcoded will show something like Converted to 128k CBR or something similar. Another way is on your player (Softsqueeze included) go to the info on the track itself (press right in Now Playing) and scroll down to Bitrate. [slim] SB3 loses wireless signal, shaking restores it
My parents have an SB3 and lately it's developed an issue where it fall off the wireless network. I found that if I shake it things begin to work again. I go into Current Settings to view the wireless signal strength. When it's off the network the signal strength is 0%, pick it up and hold it, still 0%, give it a shake, 60%+. To try to determine whether or not it's a problem with their wireless router I brought over one of my SB3s and put it in the same location as the other SB3. Mine worked flawlessly, and theirs required the shake at one point. I am pretty confident that their wireless router is working fine (my wifi enabled phone had no issues either). Their SB3 also fails to connect to the network after a firmware upgrade or regular restart. Give it a shake and everything is kosher. I'm not sure what to do, but opinions are wanted. It was a Christmas gift in 2006 so I have a feeling it's out of warranty. Pat Farrell;270948 Wrote: cparker wrote: Pat Farrell;270836 Wrote: They will be delivered over the 'net. Physical plastic disks are dead. As are players for them. Very unlikely.. physical media is here to stay. The convenience of the plastic disc is far higher than the gauntlet of bandwith limits, crashing hard disks, file corruption and DRM. This is exactly what was said about music CDs in 1999 or so. All of us SqueezeBox users know that physical music disks are irrelevant. How exactly would you take your movie collection on holiday, in the car, in a plane etc. Yes you could download first for new content but then you have to plan ahead (and ensure it can play offline) and for your existing content you have to find the time to rip them. To make this happen, all we need is to move from the equivalent of dialup, which most folks had in 1999, to the equivalent of broadband. The reason so many folks used low rate MP3 was that relative to dialup, it was faster. With modern broadband (even as dead slow as it is in the US) you can do real time RedBook. The idea of online and offline is going to die. You want a movie or TV show, you watch it from some server somewhere. I have no idea how it will be billed. Perhaps like HBO, where $20 a month buys all of their movies for a month. I'm not claiming that plastic disks will go away by the end of this week. But by the end of the next decade, for sure. The problem I see (maybe have is a more suitable word) is that all of the mainstream online music retailers sell lossy music. I know that with my physical media and a lossless encoder I have on my digital audio player a 100% identical copy to what's on my physical media. The industry triumph right now is just getting DRM to be relaxed/dropped. Don't forget the uproar over companies like ATT (SBC) wanting to charge content providers like Google for pushing their content over the network. Now we are facing bandwidth throttling on P2P activity, but what's to say they won't extend it to media content that they aren't the source of? IIRC there was mention of a QOS fee to make sure such content is delivered reliably. This makes me think of the cellco walled garden approach where the only content you get comes from them. An extreme example, but you get the general idea. Until I can buy lossless, DRM free music from mainstream outlets and not worry about my ISP or their connection choking my content because they think I need to pay them more for the privelige I will continue to buy physical media. The masses, however, think that mp3 is the be all and end all of digital formats, are probably totally unaware anything else (and better) exists and will embrace the concept of 100% digital distribution quite readily. That was with SlimServer 6.5.4. -- 4mula1 SlimServer 6.5.4 + Solaris 10 x86: Because Linux would've been too easy! 4mula1's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3439 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42941 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Multiple Libraries
cmclella;264289 Wrote: Hi For the life of me I cannot find the answer to this: 1 apartment 1 wireless router 2 laptops 2 separate itunes libraries Multiple rooms Question 1: can the squeezebox toggle between PCs/libraries? how? Question 2: would it be possible to play music from laptop 1 to the SB receiver in the living room, and music from laptop 2 to the SB receiver upstairs? To answer your explicit questions, yes, it will do everything you want as described above assuming you run a copy of SlimServer on each laptop. Things get more complicated when you want one SlimServer to serve it all. Re: [slim] Connection help, please
Like Phil said you could use a crossover cable from the Squeezebox to the laptop, but that doesn't solve your problem. Sprint probably doesn't want you sharing your internet connection among other devices in your house, as I'm sure they want each laptop/PC to have it's own connection to make their revenue stream better. If the software from Sprint doesn't connect until you disable the ethernet interface then you may be out of luck. Have you tried to enable the ethernet connection once you've connected using your Aircard? -- 4mula1 SlimServer 6.5.4 + Solaris 10 x86: Because Linux would've been too easy! 4mula1's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3439 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42845 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] need help, mac, linksys router and ever-changing IP address
When you say you can't get on the internet when you manually configure the mac, does the squeezebox work? You said you entered the ip address, subnet mask, and gateway ip address (router). Did you also set the dns server ip address? If you don't tell your mac the dns server address it's going nowhere on the internet. -- 4mula1 SlimServer 6.5.4 + Solaris 10 x86: Because Linux would've been too easy! 4mula1's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3439 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42779 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Running Dtrace for files being opened
I started an rsync job last night on my Solaris box and it was still running this morning (and still running now!) so I wanted to see if I could figure out how much it had done. It was scheduled via cron so I have no output on it. I had the idea to use Dtrace to show what files were being opened on the system. Dtrace showed each file being copied but what I was surprised to see was some of the activity from SlimServer, particularly the frequent call to /etc/protocols. It will make 8 seperate requests right in a row, then wait for awhile and do it again. What's in that file that's so interesting to SlimServer? -- 4mula1 SlimServer 6.5.4 + Solaris 10 x86: Because Linux would've been too easy! 4mula1's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3439 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42669 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Running Dtrace for files being opened
That may very well be. Since dtrace shows that the process that calls for /etc/protocols is slimserver.pl and not perl I hadn't considered all of the perl modules at play being responsible. I've never run across /etc/protocols before and was a little curious. It's really amazing how many files get opened every time I log in via ssh... -- 4mula1 SlimServer 6.5.4 + Solaris 10 x86: Because Linux would've been too easy! 4mula1's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3439 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42669 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Running Dtrace for files being opened
I've noticed that nscd, utmpd, init, and automountd are all busy little beavers. SlimServer is a lot busier than I thought but I do use the SuperDateTime plugin (for weather) and the RSS screensaver. I have a feeling those are the reasons that the SlimServer filecache is hit as often as it is. -- 4mula1 SlimServer 6.5.4 + Solaris 10 x86: Because Linux would've been too easy! 4mula1's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3439 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42669 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
