[slim] SB replacement hardware that works with SB Server software?

2012-12-07 Thread Charles Stanton
Hi - Excepting Vortex box, can any one recommend a hardware player (same
in function to a SB Classic or Touch) that will work with the Squeezebox
Server software? Thanks!

[slim] IR Blaster and SB Touch

2012-02-19 Thread Charles Stanton
Hi - Looking to find out if anyone has gotten IR Blaster to work with
the SB Touch. I know this has been kicking around for a few years now
and in December 2011 it was addressed and it should work, but I have
not found a post indicating that a user actually got it to go. So I'd
love to hear if anyone is using IR Blaster with the SB Touch and what
their experience was. Here is mine to date:

I did some checking prior to buying the Touch and it is a supported a
player according to the IR Blaster Wiki with limitations (no RAW
formats, no IR Learning, no Repeater). So I followed the wiki
instructions at http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/IRBlaster . I
used Winlirc to create a native conf file (not RAW ) for my
remote/amp/receiver. I tested that file first with the SB3 and it
works great.

So I bought the Touch and was ready to rollbut no luck. It
doesn't work. I have the volume in LMS set to 100%. I am on LMS
Server: 7.7.1 r33751 and Touch firmware 7.7.1 r9558

I am wondering if there is some setting on the Touch I am missing or
if there is something else I need to do. If I need to do the Remote
Login to the Touch to put a file in there or anything, I can do it if
given some direction.

I can share my conf file for the amp/receiver. It is not in RAW format.

I love IR Blaster and i held back on getting a Touch until it
supported this feature. Really want to get it to work. any help
would be appreciated!

thanks.

Re: [slim] Logitech Airplay Speaker

more on the d-link boxee - they might have done it in software. it
appears to run on some sort of linux and apparently you can get ssh
access with some effort. they also don't call it AirPlay - they call
it "iOS Streaming." that may say something.

it also in not an expensive device - less than the Touch ($199).
Works great for video.

i tried the shairport install and got lost. i am no pro at linux but
get around OK and those instructions were real basic and the author
must assume the reader knows all sorts of things that many would not
know.

i am not a lawyer so i'll skip wading through terms&conditions, but it
seems odd that so many other hardware devices canis Logitech or
the SB Touch unique is some regard? I used the example of D-Link Boxee
- they enabled it via a firmware update. The Boxee (video streaming
player) is not so functionally different from an SB (audio streaming
player). if the terms are so restrictive, why can a company like
D-Link/Boxee do it and not Logitech? Or the growing list of other
hardware AV companies?

Re: [slim] Logitech Airplay Speaker

2012-02-10 Thread Charles Stanton
Great discussion...I still wonder why the Squeezebox Touch could not
also be an Airplay device - so you could select it as a receiver and
use Airplay to stream to the SB. This would be the best of both
worlds: a superior networked 'open' audio solution (Squeezebox) and
the convenience of Airplay. .

BTW, I noticed that the D-Link Boxee is doing this now - via a recent
firmware update. I believe there software is also open. Curiously,
they don't call it Airplay but "Enable Streaming from iOS device."

One other point seems to be missing in the broader discussion - the
SB products are perfect for multi-room setups: you can have one (or
more) music libraries and stream virtually any music source to
individual players - either synched or individual (different) streams
You can then also control all rooms via one pretty good web-interface
on any networked computer, or via an App (iPeng, etc.). There is also
pretty much no limitation on the type of source (local music of most
formats, radio, numerous services) and all can be played back from one
interface. The Apple stuff does not do this well - the best way I
can think of to achieve multi-room/multiple streams with Apple is to
have multiple Apple TVs and then use Apple Remote App for local music
(iTunes libraries) and then Airplay for other Apps. Conceptually
this is not much different from multiple networked SBs, except that it
can also do Airplay. And it has downsides compared to an SB
solution: you can't sync multiple Apple TVs, limitations on music
formats for local music, no wired streaming of services like Pandora
etc (only Airplay), and inferior management (you have to switch back
and forth with the Apple Remote app to control different apple TVs).

In any case, I think Airplay on the SB would be a great feature and
make good business sense. Logitech should figure out a way to do it!

Re: [slim] Logitech Airplay Speaker

2012-01-29 Thread Charles Stanton
what would be a great SB innovation is if the SB Touch could be a
Airplay receiver (like an Apple TV, Denon Receiver or the growing list
of devices that can do it) As an earlier post pointed out, it may be
that Apple won't allow it on an open platform, but I thought the SB
Touch firmware was proprietary, no?

I think Airplay's appeal is the growing number of Apps that support it
(examples: Pandora, Spotify, etc) and the fact that it will playback
local content from any iOS device. A friend comes over, they can play
there stuff directly from there phone/iPad, etc

(One of the ironies of Airplay is that it allows the Apple TV to
playback streaming services that it is otherwise closed to - like
Pandora and Spotify,. It makes no sense to me)

on airplay quality - it's not so great. For example if you want to
use Pandora with Apple TV (or other Airplay receiver) from a iOS
device it has to get the content from the Internet over WiFi and then
send it back out over Wifi to the Airplay Receiver (and maybe another
Wifif hop if the Apple TV/Airplay Receiver is not hard wired). In my
test/use with only lossy formats there are dropouts - not so many to
make it unusable but enough for it to be not unexpected.

nevertheless, given Airplay's momentum, I think the SB Touch doubling
as an Airplay receiver has enormous appeal and would be a great
selling point for it.

Re: [slim] Logitech drops Revue, says early Google TV intro a 'mistake'

2011-11-14 Thread Charles Stanton
My point was that if setup properly it does not require support. We
install and then have almost no follow up support calls or issues with our
overwhelming non-tech customers. I would agree that there is not good
documentation for trouble-free installation and that initial installation
(done right) could be a problem for non-tech customers (think of generic
wi-fi problems alone, which is a prerequisite for a useable system, and
which a lot of non-tech people really struggle with getting right,
especially in larger spaces) .

But i can't emphasize enough that IF setup properly it does not require
on-going support and customers get enormous benefits and enjoyment from the
system WITHOUT having to endlessly tinker with it. Our customers don't
tinker with it. They just use it.

Sonos is no treat on the initial setup, either, especially when setting it
up with their wireless system in a large space (it can be way worse since
you can't really tweak their proprietary wireless network, where you can
with standard Wi-Fi). .

Better installation documentation would help as would some simple 'best
practices' (like: problems increase if the squeezebox server computer and
SBs are connected wirelessly, so please use wired Ethernet whenever
possible, or another: the system runs smoother and encounters less
problems if squeezecenter is installed on a dedicated computer, if not
possible, install it on an 'always on' computer; do not install
squeezecenter on a laptop. Or another: please try to ensure your Wi-Fi
network is properly setup and functioning prior to installation). Etc, Etc

Re: [slim] Logitech drops Revue, says early Google TV intro a 'mistake'

2011-11-12 Thread Charles Stanton
I often see posts stating that the SB is not for the 'non-tech' crowd
and/or you can't sell and instal them for non-tech consumers. Well, I do
install them for non-tech customers and they have virtually no problems and
love the devices. It's true they get a professional installation with a
dedicated server, but the idea that it cannot be done is simply false. It
works flawlessly for most of our customers and problems are far and few
between (with the notable, recent exception of the 7.6 debacle - yeah that
hurt and cost us). Nor is it all that complicated for our installers if a
few rules are adhered to: a very solid whole home wi-fi network, hard
wired server, hard-wired SBs, a dedicated server (with musicip),
pre-planning for mysqueezebox.com and streaming apps, and, at the end, a
leisurely walk-thru/tutorial with the customer. Done this way, Sonos,
which we also install, does not compare in terms of reliability, quality or
features. We'll install it for customers who demand it, but steer the rest
away.

It's certainly true that we sell to an upscale niche market who have the
money to spend for the setup, server and the service we provide, but done
right you can't beat it for a full featured digital audio solution.

[slim] 7.6.1, Duet Controller and IR Blaster problem

2011-08-19 Thread Charles Stanton
i've used ir blaster for some time and have update SB Server to 7.6.1 RC3. I
use the wifi controller to control a duet reciever and 2 SB Classics. both
SB Classics are setup with IR Blaster.

No problem with IR Blaster from the Web Interface or the SB Classic regular
remote. But the Duet Controller, while doing everything else it usually
does, is not working to controll volumevia IR Blaster.Power On/Off works.
Mystifying!

Any help would be appreciated

[slim] SBS 7.6 and Fishbone Interface

2011-08-06 Thread Charles Stanton
Hi - I see that Fishbone is no longer in the list of available interfaces in
7.6 I found a post and have the Fishbone.zip files. I have a couple of
questions that I am hoping someone can answer before I install it:

1. Is Fishbone no longer supported at all? Is there a reason?
2. Will installing it on 7.6 cause issues with the functioning of SB
Server? I put it on a Windows box and seems OK so far.
3. For Linux Fedora, where would I put the Fishbone files? on windows, i
put it in the html folder and that was all i needed to do. I can't figure
out where I would put them on Fedora (I have a Vortexbox).

It goes without saying that it is my favorite skin and I know where to find
all my settings it seems it would be a real shame if it were to go
away.

[slim] Squeezebox Classic/IR Out/Multi-zone Audio Question

2011-06-22 Thread Charles Stanton
I am retrofitting an existing multi-zone audio system. I want to get rid of
the keypads and each room and go to a Squeezebox based system. It's a 6
zone system and my current idea is to: Use 6 Squeezebox Classics employing
the IR out feature (IR Blaster Plugin). This would allow per zone control
of the Multizone Audio Controller (Amp's) volume, on/off, etc. via the
Squeezebox Controller or one of the iPad/iTouch apps. EVERYTHING could be
controlled via a WiFi controller - no need for keypads or other remote to
control the multizone audio controller.

This seems like a good solution, except: What if the Classics go away and
are not longer available? They do break. I'd prefer to use a Squeezebox
Receiver, but it does not have the IR out feature. Apparently the Touch does
not have it either.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I might achieve the same objective
without being dependent on the Classic? Again the objective is to have the
Amp/Reviver and Squeezebox Server controlled on a per zone basis exclusively
from the Wi-Fi controller or iPad App.

Any suggestions would be really appreciated. Thanks.

[slim] Biography and Album Review: Problems connecting to All Music

2010-11-08 Thread Charles Stanton
In the last weeks album review and biography stopped working. so I upgraded
them to 2.9.2 and still no luck. For Album Review I get the album listed
and the line "Information provided by AMG all music" but no review. In
other words, there is no error, just no review.

for biography, I get "Information could not be collected. There might be a
network problem. Please try again!"

This happens on the Web UI and iPeng, the two interfaces I use.

Has anyone else seen this and/or have any suggestions?

thanks

[slim] Squeezebox Server 7.5 - CLI Port 9090 problems

2010-05-28 Thread Charles Stanton
Hi - I use an application that talks to Squeezebox Server (7.5) on the CLI
port 9090. the machine is a Windows Home Server. The squeezebox server
reports that port 9090 is 'OK' and the CLI plugin is installed. However, i
cannot communicate with it. As a test I used telnet on the machine hosting
squeezebox server and it does not work either. there are no firewalls.

Any suggestions? thanks!

[slim] What happened to Music Services (Pandora, etc.) in Fishbone Interface

2009-10-08 Thread Charles Stanton
I upgraded to 7.4 and the web interface using Fishbone (and others?) is
missing all music services. Am i missing something or can you no longer
select stations in Pandora from the web interface? it's odd. maybe it is
hiding somewhere? i would hope functionality is not being taken away from
the web interface - it's the main way i use my squeezeboxes.

Re: [slim] Biogrpahy and Album Review Display on Duet Controller?

2008-04-27 Thread Charles Stanton
Bjorn,

thanks for the instructions and files. I got the directory and its files
(AlbumReviewApplet.lua, AlbumReviewMeta.lua and strings.txt) copied and
they show up when i use putty to navigate to the directory (
/usr/share/jive/applets/AlbumrRview) and list the files using ls. Also both
AlbumReview and Biogrpahy show up under Extras. They just don't work. When
I click on AlbumReview nothing happens; with Biogrpahy it goes to a blank
screen.

I checked to make sure there was content available via the SC web interface
for the currently playing song for both. I also checked to make sure that i
was connecting to other services from the controller (like the RSS feeds).

One note for the pscp command under windows: you must specify -scp otherwise
it defaults to using -sftp which errors out.

Anything you can think of that I may be doing wrong? Do I need to do
something in the web interface settings (I looked around and did not see
anything obvious) Thanks for all your trouble! Charles

Re: [slim] Biogrpahy and Album Review Display on Duet Controller?

2008-04-19 Thread Charles Stanton
Thansk..but did not have much luck with the first method. I created a
Plugins directory under the Plugins directory. In that directory I created
another directory called biogrpahy. In that there are just 2 files:
install.xml (from the original Bio direcory) and the single 'strings' file
from the jive folder (i did not copy the acutal folder, just its
contents). Restarted the server, nopthing shows up in the applet installer
on the controller. Looked around the SC settings in the web interface, did
not see anything

On the second mehtod, what actual files should I put in the
/usr/share/jive/applets folder? just the 'strings' file from the jive
folder? that does not seem righti did install putty and the scp program
and can login to the controller..not that i am familillar with trhese
tools, but i shoudl be able to figure that part out. just need to know
what files need to go in there. thanks very much. Charles

[slim] Multizone Distributed Audio Ideas

2007-03-25 Thread Charles Stanton

I am looking to integrate the SB into an existing home distributed A/V
system. It is a Niles system with 5 zones. Speaker cables all go back to
the a/v closet. There are no local inputs in the different zones (like the
Russound system can do with the Abus local source inputs). There are also
no stand alone recievers in different rooms. Ethernet and Wireless capabilty
is good every where so that is not an issue.

I would like to be able to have different music streaming to different zones
at the same time. I would like to do at least two different simutaneous
streams. This is the solution I have come up with, but it seems hardly
ideal:

Install 2 SBs in the A/V closet ( called for example, Main-SB1 and
Main-SB2). These would be on different audio inputs on the Niles
reciever. In each zone I would have a SB (or at least two or three
wireless ones that could be moved around, as needed). To listen to one
stream in the kitchen I would synch the kitchen SB to Main-SB1 and select
the appropriate audio source on the Niles local keypad; at the same time if
someone wanted to listen to a separate stream in the media room, that SB
would be synched to the Main-SB2 and they would select the appropriate audio
source on the Niles keypad.

I think it would work, but the downsides are: a lot of SBs, and possible
confusion as to who is listening to which stream in which zone. I suppose
one could be fixed (like ktichen always synched to Main-SB1) and the other
the 'floater'...still not ideal.

If anyone has another solution or ideas I'd greatly appreicate it. Thanks.,

I can't seem to get MusicIP to work either under 6.5.1.  it is ver 1.7.  The API is running.  SS recognizes it insofar as the option to use it on the main Server Setting page is there (it is not if the API is not running).   I have tried the usuall - shutting both applications down, starting MIP, then starting SS.   Usually that worksno luck.   It's an  XP Pro machine.

I also tried the complete uninstall of everyhing and reinstall (i had upgraded on top of 6.3).  same result.

Re: [slim] Re: Best wireless router for Squeezebox?

2006-04-23 Thread Charles Stanton
One more tip:

- The location/position of the router/AP can be incredibly importantt.   Moiving it just a couple of feet in some cases can improve signal by 25 - 40%.   Use a long Ethernet cable, and try it at a higher elevation in the room (like on top of a bookcase, or mounted on a ceiling).   The signal propagates down well, but laterally quite poor.  Example:  Lets say you have the SB on the second floor and can put the router/AP in that room or the room above.   If the router/AP is across the room from the SB, it is possible to get a better signal putting the router/AP on the floor above, especially if it is directly above the SB.   Experiment with various locations, but again, always try the router/AP at a higher elevation.

On 4/23/06, Charles Stanton <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

I have installed a bunch of Linksys routers and Access Points with the SB (20+) -- few of which have any problems.   Of course, wired is always the best.

Some tips:

- Try 'B' only.  G is really not necessary for streaming audio if wireless connection is good.  B has better range than G, often resulting in a better connection that often solves problems. B is also more than sufficient for web surfing, print sharing.  File sharing with large files suffers.

- Never double hop.  It works like hell and is nothing but trouble.  (Double hop:  Wireless to Slimserver machine AND Wireless to SB).  It just won't work consistently. One leg must be wired.

- Don't use the Linksys A/G models.  The signal strength is poor.

- Scan the environment and select a channel with least congestion -  Pretty much never use ch. 6 unless there is no congestion and then this is a good choice  - the SB seems to like it.

- In a multiple AP environment, I have seen the SB home on the wrong AP (that is an AP with a weaker signal that is further from it than a closer  AP).  Resolve this by disconnecting the APs other than the one you want the SB to home to.  Set up that connection.  Then reconnect the other APs.  If littel congestion on Ch. 6, use it for the AP you want the SB to home to.

- Interference issues -  If you have 2.4 Ghz cordless phones, see if you can change the channel.  if not, dump it and get a 900 Mhz, or other outside the 2.4 range.   Old microwaves will blast out your signal.  Get another one or just live with it.

-  If a particular Linksys Router/AP has any weird things going on, install latest firmware, hard reset, then re-configure.  If this does not help any strange behaviours (like failing DHCP, poor signal, etc.) return it or just get a new one - the $ are not worth the headache).  Having installed over 100 of these routers/APs, bad ones account for somewhere around 5% or more.  So dump them if problems occur.

- Encryption.  I always use WEP 128.  Do not see any reason to use stronger/better encryption in a residential environment - Who on earth would go through the trouble of hacking these home networks?  -- especially since so many networks are wide open (at least in metro NY).

Re: [slim] Re: Best wireless router for Squeezebox?

2006-04-23 Thread Charles Stanton

Re: [slim] Re: How can I speed up the web interface?

2006-02-26 Thread Charles Stanton
I have found that the beta 6.5x is much, much faster than 6.2.x and as best I can tell it is pretty close to being bug free and 'ready' for general release.  I would give that a try.  don't know Linux too well,. but on Windows, I would definately completely remove previous version and reinstall.

I am using it with Fishbone, about 13K songs on a PIV 2.8 with 512 RAM and the browse music (artist, album etc) works great.

I don't know it, but I will give it a try and see if it makes an improvement and report back.

I did move slimserver to a PIV 1.7 Ghz with 640 RAM (XP Pro) and it works better there, that is for sure.  But that machine is for the kids and would sure like to put my old PIII to use (supermicro board, always very solid).

thx.  I looked through that thread and it appears that the MySQL mainly helps with scanning (please correct me if I am wrong).

I don't add music on a daily basis, usually doing it on a 'project' basis where i will ripp 50 or 60 albums over a weekend and add them to the library all at once, letting it scan overnight after the add  - so I would not go through the trouble if that is the main benefit.  If there are other perceptible performance improvements, I'll do it.   Thanks.

Re: [slim] Re: Optimizing Slimserver on a dedicated machine

2006-01-31 Thread Charles Stanton
Thanks.   The 'problem' I am trying to address is to get the web interface to work more quickly.  I primarily use the web interface, not the remote.   It can take 30 seconds to load certain pages (like Browse Albums or Browse Artists).  The music library is about 10K songs.   The slow load times are not related to the network as best I can tell  - it is a wired network and the slow load times occur both from client machines and on the machine running slimserver. I have also shut down musicmagic to see if that helps.  Not appreciably.

Memory usage - Musicmagic uses about 24 MB and slim.exe is using about 70 MB.  I lowered the database cache size to 13.

I really don't think it is much of a RAM problem:  I notice that the CPU pretty much gets maxed out when loading pages like Browse Artists, Browse Albums.  It just may be that I need to move slimserver to a machine with a faster CPU.  I was hoping I could use the older PIII as it is a perfectly fine machine.

Any other suggestions would be great.

[slim] Optimizing Slimserver on a dedicated machine

2006-01-31 Thread Charles Stanton
I have slimserver 6.2.2 running on a dedicated Pentium III 1.2 G with 512 RAM.  The OS is W2K Pro.  The machine does nothing except run slimserver and music magic.   I am looking for advice on what I can do to optimize slimserver for this environment.

In Windows, besides removing pretty much all applications and anything else that starts with the computer, I set it to optimize for background services, rather than applications under Performance Options (I assume this should help as slimserver does run as a system service and that is also the way musicmagic is setup).  I don't see any difference however.

I noticed under performance there are a number of settings, like -

a. Keep Unswapped Interval - the default is 30.  Should I lower this, to say 10 or 5?  Will it make a difference?
b. Database Temporary File - Set to Use RAM.  I am sure this is best
c.  DB Cache Size Tuning - the default is 10,000.  I increased this 170,000, under the assumption that this would use roughly 250 MB RAM, using the guideline that 1 uses about 15 MB.  Is this too much, or too little?  Any advice?

any other ideas or point me to other advice would be much appreciated.

Thx, Charles

Re: [slim] Re: Squeezebox Remote Control Question

My Onkyo remtoe does not have a learning function and I think I have tried 20 or 30 codes (all possible JVC codes I could find in the Onkyo manual as well as anywhere else plus just some other random ones (trying to 'get lucky').

None work, so I suppose I am out of luck.

BTW, in response to kdf, I thouhgt the codes were set by the manufacturer of the box you are trying to control, not set by the manufacturer of the remote and its corresponding component.  what you seem to be saying is the manufacturer of the remote maps the codes of the box to its own codes.  This does'nt seem to make sense but maybe i am missing something.

Find the "real" slimserver installation - the preference pane and "showpackage contents" find your way to the CPAN HTML folder. Open the MHCPANdownload - you need the files in the HTML folder, copy them all and then
paste them into the CPAN HTML folder - there will be a couple ofduplicates - dont replace those. Then it will work. The annoyance (forme) is that you have to do this again everytime you install a laterslimserver edition - I keep the MHCPAN folder to hand for this reason

[slim] Continuing problems with 6.1

2005-06-17 Thread Charles Stanton
I have been running the 6.1 nightlies for about 10 days, currently are
on 6/16. Platform is w2k. Wired SB2. PIII 1.2, 512 RAM. Using
musicmagic.

I continue to have regular problems with Slimserver being inaccessible
via the web interface. After starting the service, it typically
occurs within 8 hours. There is nothing in the event viewer. Control
from the SB2 continues to work most of the time, but sometimes it too
will continue to work and say it is playing, but no audio and no
elapsed time.

Restaring the service always fixes it.

I don't see many posts on this - Am I the only one experiencing this
issue? I have no reason to believe its the machine it is running on
as it is otherwise working well.

this tip is sort of in the remote section of help, but before I posted

[slim] Jump Down/Up or Page Down/Up scolling with the remote

For example, let's say you are at Browse Music > Browse Artists and

jump up or down the list say 30 - 40 artists or some other number?
this way you could go from 2Pac to the Beatles fairly quickly.

If the remote is not able to do this, might it be in the future? Has
this come up before?

Re: [slim] Re: Web interface broken again in trunk

2005-06-12 Thread Charles Stanton
I have been having more general problems with the nightlies from the
last week, all fairly consistent. Platform: W2K Pro. Running as a
service. SB2, wired. Last nightly used was 6/11

- Slimserver basically just dies. Under Services and from the Task
Manager it appears to be running - but the web interface can not reach
it and if I try starting it from application mode, it hangs. The SB2
shows the last played song, but it just stuck there and the remote can
not wake it. Have to pull the plug and then it hangs on looking for
SlimServer (it never finds it).

- This happens even -- or mostly -- when I am not even using
Slimserver, for instance when I come back from being out for some
hours

- In fact it never happens when using it.

- the computer is only running slimsever, and there is nothing wrong
with it, so I am confident it is not that.

- If I restart the service, it does come back. but this is a constant
chore, so from my perspective the last week's nightlies don't work.

I am not adept at the debugging, but would be happy to do so with some
guidance.

( on a positive not, the web interface, when working, is so much
quicker than 6.0.x).

Re: [slim] Re: Launching MusicMagic at startup

2005-06-10 Thread Charles Stanton
I have yet to try the MS method, but assuming it is basically the
same, look in slimserver settings to make sure that 'use music magic'
is checked -- sometimes it is finicky. Also check to make sure that
the the musicmagic API service is running in the instance of
musicmagic that is running as a service.

Re: [slim] Re: Launching MusicMagic at startup

2005-06-09 Thread Charles Stanton
That last post did not get much of a reply, so I'll just post the
instructions here in plain text for all to use howerver they wish.
Disclaimer: I have no interest in either of the companies that require
license keys!

If anyone want the instructions in another format, like pdf or rtf,
email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

===
MusicMagic Setup with SlimServer 6.x

These instructions provide steps to install Predixis' MusicMagic (MM)
software as a Windows system service and to automatically integrate it
with SlimServer (SS) on boot. Once setup, MM starts automatically
before SS, and no user interaction is required to integrate the two
programs.

The instructions assume SlimServer (SS) and a SLIMP3/Squeezebox or
Softsqueeze player are installed. The MM plugin does not work
correctly and can not be set up in Slimserver without a player (it
installs but the mixes come up blank).

This is a one time procedure.

A. Install MM

- Install MM and allow it to fully analyze/verify all music before continuing.
- Install license key to allow MM to run the API service
- Do not turn on the API service at this point

B. Install Basta.com's "AppToService" Program (http://www.basta.com)

- Install the program and purchase license key.
- Install key under the AppToService directory with this command:
AppToService /key:xx (for example: C:\Program Files\Basta
Computing\AppToService>AppToService /key:xx)

C. Setup MM to Run as a Windows System Service

- Run AppToService from the Windows Program menu. It opens a DOS shell
and shows all the commands. Enter 'q' to quit the menu and at the
command line, enter> AppToService /install "c:/program
files/predixis/musicmagic mixer/musicmagicmixer.exe" /startup:a
/interact:1 (or equivalent, depending on where the MM program is
installed). The AppToService program returns an acknowledgement that
MM was installed as a service. In Windows Computer Management the
service is listed as "ApptoService musicmagicmixer." We'll refer to
it as ATS (MM).
- Note that the "Interact with the Desktop" switch is ON
(/interact:1). This will be turned off from Computer
Management>Services>ATS (MM)>Properties>Logon when everything is
working.
- Go to Computer Management >Services and ensure that the ATS (MM)
service is started. If not, start the service. When started the MM
UI should open up on the desktop because of the "Interact" switch.
- Now turn on the API service in MM (File > Customize Options >
Services). Ignore any MM error message that say can not start API
service, so long as it indicates it is started. In any case, continue
with the instructions.

C. SlimServer Settings

- Open the Web Interface, go to Server Settings > Plugins and make
sure that the MM plugin is checked. Now go to the main Server
Settings page and make sure that "Use MusicMagic" box is checked. If
SlimServer does not recognized MM, that option will not be available;
if not available, follow the next step.
- Double check in MM that the API service is running; next go to
Computer Management and stop both the ATS (MM) and SS services. Now
first start the ATS (MM) service then start the SS service. The order
in which the services are started is very important.
- SS should now recognize MM, as indicated by the mm next to
artists/songs, etc. If not, again make sure that "Use MM" on the main
Server Settings page is checked (sometimes it mysteriously will not
take). Repeat the Service Start + Stop routine if necessary, with
ATS (MM) always started before SS.
- Once SS recognizes MM the procedure is basically complete. Note
that SS will rescan the music library once MM is recognized. Let it
do its thing before testing.
- Test: Reboot computer. On reboot MM should start and the UI appear
on the desktop. Open SS web interface and the mm should appear next
to artists/albums, etc. Create an Instant mix to ensure proper
functioning.
- Now, turn off the Interact with Desktop setting (Computer Management
> Services > AppToService musicmagicmixer > Properties> Logon) by
un-checking "Interact with Desktop."
- Final test: reboot one last time; check SS interface for mm; create
Instant Mix.

You should try the method I suggested in the earlier post. It does not
require a batch file. It works great and have installed it for at
least 10 people. Works flawlessy after a little intial tinkering -
everything starts on boot in the background, running as system
services. Works on 6.0.x and 6.1.x.

[slim] Minor annoyances in 6.0.x branch

2005-06-07 Thread Charles Stanton
Hi-

I have been using the 6/3 nightly of the 6.0.x branch. Platform is W2K Pro.

Everything works very well except for two annoyances. I am referring
to the web interface:

The first is with musicmagic. Occasionally (but it feels like
'frequently') I'll create a mix and attempt to either play or add it
and nothing happens. It just will not play or add. If I do a browser
refresh, sometimes it is there, often it is not, and then I have to
start over finding the song or artist that the mix was based on and
doing it again. Don't know if anyone has seen this or if it is a
known bug. It is not all the time.

The second has to do with clearing the now playing playlist, also on
the web interface. Occasionally the 'save, download, clear' option
at the top is simply not visible. It will reappear with a browser
refresh, but this has its own downside. For example, if I have done a
search and want to play that artist/album or song - but don't want to
add it to the current playlist -- I am stuck doing a browser refresh,
clearing the current playlist and starting the search again (search
results are not maintained on a browser refresh). The workaround is
pretty easy, but also annoying: clear the current playlist before
the search/add. But typically I would want to listen to music while I
search/add.

Has anyone else seen these? Are they known bugs? thanks.

Re: [slim] Launching MusicMagic at startup

2005-05-19 Thread Charles Stanton
I found a small shareware program called "apptoservice" that works
well and is fairly easy to setup. It starts mm as a service at boot
and works well with ss. You can find it at http://www.basta.com. a
couple of tips:

- when setting up mm as service, initially set it to 'interact with
desktop.' this way you can make sure the api service is started and do
other troubleshooting (even if you have set the api service in regular
mode, it goes away when run as service and needs to be turned on
again). Once everything is working well, turn off the interact with
desktop - otherwise the mm application always comes up on the desktop,
and if closed the service stops.

- when upgrading ss from one version to another, the musicmagic plugin
may need to be reset within ss. check it in server settings >
plugins. make sure the setting takes. then what works for me is:
stop the ss service. stop the mm service. start the mm service.
start the ss service. now double check server settings to see if 'use
mm' is checked. if so, you should be set.

[slim] music magic broken in 6.1 05-15

2005-05-15 Thread Charles Stanton
On the windows platform (W2K Pro), the most recent 6.1 nightly appears
to have broken the music magic plugin. It recognizes mm, but no 'mm'
shows up next to songs/albums - even after messing with mm
(restarting, checking api service, etc).

Backed out to 05-14, and everything appears fine.

Re: [slim] Using Squeeze with a wireless network drive ?

2005-05-15 Thread Charles Stanton
So long as the external drive only holds your music files and not the
slimserver application (which needs to run on the PC), it should not
be a problem. Point the music library settings to the network dirve
and you should be set.

Re: [slim] Biography as screensaver?

2005-05-13 Thread Charles Stanton
I think Dean may have meant putting biogroaphy as a menu item under
'song info' accessible from the web interface (for fishbone, the
capital 'I' on the far right of the a song in the playlist).

that would seem better than in Help. Another idea is to simply put it
in the drop-down menu along with 'browse artists, browse albums', etc.
That would certainly make it very accessible (I can imagine the
arguments for not doing so -- contention over what plugins get to go
there). .

Another suggestion: How about next to Player Settings at the top of
the right side pane in fishbone?

In anycase, it seems like a more accessible place than Help is
warranted -- as it is a very nice plugin

kdf -

When I run that command, I get to this point and it hangs:

Is there something else I should be doing?

One other thing on the Alarm feature (maybe I should start a new
thread) - is that after setting it, it then seems to randomly reset
itself to 12:00 AM (while retaining the other settings). Had a
customer really pissed as it worked a couple of days and then woke him
up at midnight (he goes to sleep at like 10). I have since duplicated

[slim] Best 6.0.x release

2005-05-01 Thread Charles Stanton
I am having trouble with the 'official' 6.0.2 version (W2K PIII).
Every so often the slim.exse process just wigs out, maxing out the CPU
and just lingering in that state. No scans, no other interaction,
except playing music. Restarting the server works, but then it starts
doing it again.

Should I back out to 6.0.1 (which I did not see this on) or is there a
more stable version since 6.0.2?

Re: [slim] Re: MusicMagic, SlimServer 6.01 and SoftSqueeze 2.0b3

2005-04-27 Thread Charles Stanton
I also use MusicMagic intergrated with SlimServer and don't see this
behaviour once all the music is analyzed by MM and SlimServer has
fully scanned the library(prior to those two operations completing the
entire computer is maxed out, and I typically stop the slimserver
service, let MM do its thing, and then start slimserver again). This
is true of a couple of Windows machines (W2K, XP, varying processors
from PIII 933 to PIV 2.8, 512 MB RAM and above)

Once complete, I see no unsual cpu usage. But I also do not
regularly add music. But if this is the main issue, why not add the
music before you go to bed?

Question on the remote client comment (this is a performance question) -

If there is SB client that is only used as a remote controller via the
synch players feature and is not connected to an audio system at all
(for example a wireless SB in a room that is part of a multi-room
audio system), can you obtain some performance (network) improvements
by limiting bandwidth to that player -- assuming it does not affect
the player it is synched to?

Re: [slim] Sonos Doesn't Have to be a Threat

2005-04-14 Thread Charles Stanton
I use a program called 'apptoservice' available here:

http://www.basta.com/ProdAppToService.htm

While apptoservice is pretty straight forward to setup, getting them
all to work together takes a little trial and error, but eventually
works well and consistently. Couple of tips I have found useful (but
don't work all the time - it is a frustrating and I posted earlier
about this, to no satisfactory resolution).

I assume slimserver is running as a service.

- Do the song analysis in mm first in regular mode
- When setting up mm, do it when it is running as a service. For
example, if you turn on the api in plain application mode, when you go
to run it as a service, the setting is turned off.
- When setting up the mm service, set it to interact with the desktop.
After it is working well, you can turn this off. Always check to
make sure the api service is on.
- SlimServer tips - mm must be running first before mm is setup in SS.
  Make sure that mm is selected on the Server Settings > Plugin page;
make sure that on the main Server Settings page 'use music magic' is
checked.I found that at first SS may not recognize mm. So get mm
working as a service going first with api service active. Then
restart SS via Computer Management > Services. You may have to do
this more than once.

- The real test is to see if everything works on boot, which you may
have to do a couple of times. Once everything is set, turn off
'interact with desktop' for mm service (otherwise it opens on every
boot and if you close, the service is stopped).

It does work reliably once the tinkering is done. I would be
