Re: [slim] Native support for classical music tags
The overwhelming majority of my music collection is classical and I really have no problem using the existing tags (albeit that I use the album tag for the work and include the composer and main performer in the album name). I've no objection to additional tags but there are work arounds for classical. I think we should be extremely grateful and think ourselves very lucky that Michael and many others have devoted their time and energy to supporting LMS and wouldn't want to impose unnecessarily upon his good nature. Re: [slim] Native support for classical music tags
My music library is mostly classical and the following works very well indeed for me: Album tag: individual work in format - - e.g. "Sibelius - Symphony No 3 - C Davis, Boston SO" Title tag: Movement e.g. "I. Allegro moderato" Composer tag: Composer, e.g. "Sibelius" Artist tag(s): Main performer(s), e.g. "Davis, Colin", "Boston SO" I only use the surname of the composer and performers - except where it would cause confusion (e.g. Colin Davis and Andrew Davis) in which case I use "Davis, Colin" or "Davis, Andrew" This works very well for me. Re: [slim] Inguz EQ w/ 7.7.5 help?
I'm glad that you have got Inguz working for ALAC files. As far as Spotify's ogg files are concerned this is a bit like the blind leading the blind, but as nobody else has taken this up: I've been looking at the ogg entry in the Inguz custom-convert.conf. It uses sox.exe to convert the data to wave format but there is a "-w" parameter which the LMS convert.conf doesn't use, which doesn't seem to be included in the sox help, which I can't find any documentation for and which (when I try to test it) sox doesn't like. One possibility is that the "-w" is a typo and it should be "-v" which, when used with resampling, indicates "very high" (quality). I am not a premium Spotify subscriber, so can't test things, but one thing you could try is to delete the "-w" from the ogg sections of the Inguz custom-convert.conf file. Once again making sure that you take a backup of the file before trying this. If that worked you could try replacing the "-w" with "-v". (Again taking a backup.) I should mention that the Inguz custom-convert.conf file is generated from the data in the Inguz Plugin.pm file, so once you get things working satisfactorily it would make sense to amend the Plugin.pm file (after taking a backup of course) - but first things first. So far I've got the DSP working only on the mp3s. Anyone got > ALACs working (have to use custom conf files)? Spotify (even possible)? >From memory, the custom-convert.conf that Inguz installs contains an error regarding the ALAC files. Some years ago LMS went over to using a tweaked faad.exe to transcode ALAC files but the Inguz custom-convert.conf was never amended to reflect that change. I am assuming that the change happened before 7.7.5 as that would explain your ALAC problem. I don't use ALAC files myself but once helped another forum member out over this issue - but it was many years ago and I can't find the post or the necessary edit. However, you could try the following. I use LMS 7.9 and Windows 7 64 bit. In this setup the Inguz custom-convert.conf is in folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Squeezebox\server\Plugins\InguzEQ. Before trying out any edits I strongly suggest you make a backup of the Inguz custom-convert.conf file. If you open the file in Notepad you should see a section something like this: Code: alc flc * 00:04:20:23:9b:46 # F [alac] $FILE$ | [InguzDSP] -id "00:04:20:23:9b:46" -wav -wavo -d 24 | [flac] -cs -5 --totally-silent - Where 00:04:20:23:9b:46 is the MAC address of the player. You could try editing this to: Code: alc flc * 00:04:20:23:9b:46 # F [faad] -q -w -f 1 $FILE$ | [InguzDSP] -id "00:04:20:23:9b:46" -wav -wavo -d 24 | [flac] -cs -5 --totally-silent - (The changes are shown in red.) You will need to do this for each player in the custom-convert.conf file. As I said, I don't use ALAC files so I can't test this - so it is very much suck it and see. But I also have read that they are used for computer iPlayer Listen Again feeds, so there's no risk to the great facilities provided by bpa for now. The reason I feel the BBC should be told is that it shows they don't know what is really going on at all, and that the change could probably be reversed if they put their minds to it (even if just by clever use of URLs). Andrew Scott's latest blog entry is breathtaking in its chutzpah. One curious thing is that he clearly states that the on-demand RTMP streams have now been switched off - odd as they are working fine with Radio 3 on-demand. He also states that all BBC maintained clients have been migrated to the new streams - perhaps I am mistaken (quite likely) but only the live streams seem to by using HLS on the Windows BBC web client. Having said that the BBC might well switch of the on-demand RTMP streams in the next few hour (or they might not!). I agree with Mnyb. Also, *if* your album tag *is always* in the format Composer : Work you could even automate the process with mp3tag. Whether you would want to do this is another matter, but I am just giving an example of what is possible and no doubt there are even better ways of doing the same job. *Always* make sure you have a backup of the music files before trying anything like this and, also, *test it out on a few albums copied to a temporary folder before doing it live*. - Bulk copy the album tag over the to composer tag, using Convert - Bulk strip out the first : and everything following it from the new Composer tag using a new Action (leaving the composer name). - Copy the album tag over the to composer tag, using Convert Highlight the lines you want to change (CTRL-A for all lines) Click on Convert on the Menu Bar Select Tag to Tag Field COMPOSER (from drop down list) Format String %album% OK then - Strip out the first : and everything following it from the new Composer tag using a new Action: Click on Actions (on menu bar) Select Actions (top of list) Create New - top icon on the right Enter a new name for the action group Create New - top icon on the right Select Replace with regular expression from drop down list Field: COMPOSER (from drop down list) Regular expression: (.*?) : (.*) (where : is what you always use to separate the composer and work in the album tag) Replace matches with: $1 (The $1 refers to the first part of the regular expression, i.e. (.*?) Click on OK Click on OK Click on Close (if you click on OK is will run any action that is ticked) Now highlight the lines you want to run the new action on Click Actions on the Menu Bar Select the name of the action you have just created Touch, Meridian G92, Meridian G55, PMC OB1i speakers, HP Proliant Microserver/Ubuntu, PC/Windows 7, iPad 4, iPeng, Squeezepad. Firstly I suggest that you copy the library.db to a different folder and then use the copy of library.db instead of the file in use by LMS (it avoids the risk of inadvertently changing the database) I don't use GUI but use a batch file to extract the tables which I then import into Access (or Excel). If you are interested I can let you have the details. However, I just googled and there is a plugin for Firefox called SQLite Manager which seems to do what you want. The documentation for the plugin is here: https://code.google.com/p/sqlite-manager/w/list In Windows 7 Firefox the plugin lurks in the Web Developer menu. IMO it would be much easier to make sense of the tables with a 'clean' database, after doing a Clear everything and rescan. [slim] Qobuz streaming (inc FLAC) and download site.
I've recently come an extremely interesting French webite called Qobuz after it was enthusiastically recommended by friends. It has a premium subscription streaming at 320kbps (not sure of the format) and lossless FLAC, with clients for android, ipad, iphone, windows and Macos, plus a web player. The windows desktop player has built in support for windows kernel, ASIO. ASIO4ALL and WASAPI. http://www.qobuz.com/ Also registering on the site enables you to download albums in 24/96, 16/44.1, 320 kbps mp3 at fairly reasonable prices - very reasonable indeed compared to download prices on the Linn website. Not only that but they appear, from time to time, to have extremely cheap multi-disc set downloads - my interest in in classical and there have recently been Peter Hurford's Complete Bach Organ Works (17CDs) and Aeolian Quartet's complete Haydn String Quartets (22CDs), both for 7 Euros. (Sadly I registered too late to take advantage of those offers.) The drawbacks are: (a) The website is in French, so Google Translate is a boon. Even so, for non-French speakers it is a bit of a hassle having to constantly refer to Google (or Bing) translate. Though I understand they have plans to role the site out across europe, so that will probably solve the language problem. (b) After you register from the UK you get a message that This article is not available in your country yet (UNITED KINGDOM) when you try to purchase or stream anything. However, you can e-mail them via there web option requesting access and this seems to always be granted (at least for people in the UK). (c) The premium streaming service isn't exactly cheap If this website proves as good at it seems it would be wonderful if some helpful developer created a plugin for Squeezebox!!! (The Qobuz developers seem very tech savy so I guess they would be happy to provide the necessary guidance.) Re: [slim] Wrong transcoding settings to MP3 in default install?
Sorry for asking a silly question but why on earth would anyone want to transcode to lossy mp3? Am I missing something? Re: [slim] Extremely long startup and rescan times
Would it be unfair to suggest that, in principle, if someone wants to minimise the possibility of problems, running development versions of operating systems and LMS is an interesting way of going about it. Re: [slim] Now the Squeezebox is dead, what would your next system be? And why?
PasTim wrote: JohnB's approach is a lot easier to manage (it's just that my brain can't handle Album = Work when it doesn't!). Sorry for this very late comment but I thought it worth mentioning that when I want to play a ripped CD as a 'CD' I use browse the music folders. When I want to play a specific work I can search for it very simply, as I posted. Of course, everyone has their own methods. The beauty of this forum is that we can share methods and get ideas which might help us. Re: [slim] Now the Squeezebox is dead, what would your next system be? And why?
My music collection is mainly classical and, some years ago when I first started with Squeezebox, I made up my own tagging system (which turns out to be a variant on Beginners Guide to Classical on the Squeezebox Wiki). I don't currently use Erland's plugin but the following system works for me When a CD contains a number of major pieces I tag the individual pieces as separate Albums. Where a CD is a collection of smaller pieces I tag the CD as one Album (e.g. Barbara Bonney's CD of Scandinavian songs Diamonds in the Snow) Album: Composer - Work - Main Performer, e.g. -Shostakovich - Symphony No 15 - Haitink, RCO (2011)- Artist: Performers, e.g. -Haitink;Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra- Title: Short to help Controller display, e.g. -I. Allegretto- Genre: Orchestral, Chamber, Instrumental, Choral, Opera, Piano, String Quartet, etc I also tag the Composer tag (with the composer) thinking that I might use Erland's plugin at some time in the future. Browsing albums - displays albums in composer/work order Searching the Album tag for a composer lists pieces in alphabetical order Same when searching Album tag (or Artist tag) for a performer JohnB's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=31553 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96191 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Keep the spirit up guys; just bought a new Radio and used Receiver
jhonsber...@msn.com wrote: I just don't get this rabid buying of a dead product line unless your only using The squeezebox to listen to the music on your computer or nas . That is a valid point of view, but many of us have centred our listening around SB products and, at the moment, it is difficult to think of anything else that provides the same versatility. For example, I use LMS/Touch to: - Play ripped CDs (OK I could use my CD player) - Play downloaded files, some of which are 96/24 or 88.2/24) - Play captured Radio 3 concerts (which have been in mp2, mp3, now in aac formats) - Play those concerts using cue files I've created - Listen to iPlayer (live and listen again) - Listen to Spotify - I have just installed the Inguz digital room correction and am about to set up the DRC filters JohnB's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=31553 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96230 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Logitech in US Selling the Transporter SE for $999.99
I thought Logitech had discontinued the Transporter a couple of years ago. Does this mean they have discovered a cache of them in a warehouse somewhere and are clearing the stock or does it mean they are reviving the product (which, in view of recent announcements, seems barely credible). Re: [slim] Would you pay for LMS - Subscription or One-Time?
I would definitely be willing to subscribe on either an annual or monthly basis. The problem would be setting up a formal group willing to maintain LMS whilst finding a structure that people felt comfortable with, which gave some assurance that the subscriptions would be properly used and which didn't dissolve into multi-forked versions of LMS as various programmers decided to pursue their own pet projects.
