Sometimes “just because I can” doesn’t stand up as a valid argument. You
know that you have many better things to do today!

Either hold out for a Touch, get an SB3 or build your own player using a

I think this is entirely correct except I’d urge caution when looking
into other products and particularly whether they will work with BBC R3
going forward. Aunty, in her infinite wisdom, is changing things as you
know and are “working with manufacturers”. On previous occasions this
has actually meant nothing and although they kept these shoutcast
running for a while a lot of internet radios will simply become
redundant shortly so far as listening to BBC radio is concerned.

Regrettably something like an Amazon Echo Show maybe your only real
option!

BBC Sounds is a plugin for LMS (Logitech Media Server)
If you have installed LMS on the PC - open a browser on that PC and do
http://localhost:9000 - then at bottom right choose Settings - you will

Re: [slim] Adding a Wiim Mini to your LMS system

2022-11-30 Thread d6jg

I have put more info about the current options for using the WiiM Mini
with LMS into 3rd Party Hardware -
https://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?116997-Wiim-Mini-and-Pro

Basically it can be made to work with LMS as it stands with both the
AirPlay bridge and uPnP bridge but as usual both have compromises.

It is however confirmed as running a version of Linux so the inclusion
of Squeezelite at some future time should be possible and is now on
their roadmap. If this happens then yes it will be just like any other
SB player device with no compromises on the audio front although I don't
suppose it will be possible to pass metadata to the WiiM App but
personally I don't think that matters when you are going to be using
Material on the same phone/tablet anyway. It will be just like
squeezelite running on a Pi without a touch screen.

Re: [slim] NAS + Squeezebox + Plex

2022-11-28 Thread d6jg

For many years I have had my music files on a 4 disk QNAP 419P NAS but I
stopped running LMS on it some time ago as it's an Arm processor and
only has 512mb RAM. It couldn't cope with lots of transcoding and the
last Qnap approved version of LMS was 7.7.6. It is however great at
doing its principal job which is file sharing.
So I now have the QNAP which holds all the files and two separate
production machines - one for LMS and one for Plex - that connect over
NFS to the NAS. I have rebuilt the LMS machine a number of times but by
always using the same mount point strategy I have always made existing
playlists work.
I also have numerous "dev" devices, Pi's etc which also connect to the
NAS via NFS when required and a second offsite QNAP which syncs files on
an overnight basis. There is a Pi based LMS at the same site with an NFS
mount to the QNAP so when I visit I can play everything that I have in
my main (home) office.
I have considered Dockers but rejected the idea on the basis that it
meant unnecessary expense on a new more powerful NAS when the one I have
does what I ask it to.

For a non Linux person by far the easiiest method to edit a file is by
using WinSCP.

WinSCP connects exactly like an ssh client but gives you a graphical
Windows like interface. Find the file you want to edit and right click
on it and do Edit. For those that do this regularly add Notepad++ as the
default Editor.

Yes it was "chicks" who said to get it to work with uPnP he had to
switch off gapless - that would be a showstopper for many but I saw it
on Amazon at a Black Friday price so took a punt.

First impressions are that it seems more stable on uPnP than with the
Airplay bridge (which is odd).

It works on 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz WiFi so has connected to my SSID at 5Ghz. The
Dac32/Digi32 devices only had 2.4Ghz and I found them unstable with
Qobuz HiRes. This seems OK on that front.

I have yet to use it's native service clients except a quick test on
Qobuz but it is an impressive list.

Connected via Optical to Onkyo CR-N755 which is 24/96 capable

Works fine with Airplay bridge except a few dropouts but that could be
to do with current placement of the device and interefrence of some
description i.e. WiFi issue.

Gave it a go with uPNPBridge. Worked straight away WITH gapless -
playing DSOTM again

Hi Slarti

I shall try to get it to work gapless. I can already confirm that

Unboxed to go - about 10 mins. It automatically does a firmware update
which takes the majority of this time.
Box contains the WiiM, an optical cable, a 3.5 to 3.5 aux cable, a 3.5
to 2 x RCA cable and a USB charging cable but no adapter - generous
nevertheless.

I already had Phillipe's AirPlay bridge installed and the WiiM was found
within a couple of seconds.
I shall use it in this mode as my background player all of today and
report further but initial reaction on AirPlay (16/44.1 only) is good.

I’d second Airplay as a good option.
Phillipe’s AirplayBridge is relatively simple to use. His upnpbridge is
not anywhere near as simple (nothing to do with his coding - just the
fact that upnp as a protocol is crap).
I have taken delivery today of a Wiim Mini but not yet unboxed it. After
I have I’ll let you know whether it is a real contender. chicks who
recommended it today told me that it does work with the airplay bridge
but that as far as the upnpbridge is concerned he had to disable gapless
which for me is a no no.

The lack of gapless is quite a significant flaw if you are an album
person.

The screenshot you have included - is it from the WiiM App? Do you see
cover art in Material?

The AirPlay bridge is also much easier to get working correctly! It
either works or doesn’t.
The upnpbridge however is an absolute pig (not because of Phillips,s
code but because the protocol sucks)

That log says that there is transcoding going on presumably because one
or some of the players require it. That can cause issues but probably
isn’t the problem if your server has done grunt.

You imply that your players are on WiFi. Interference can cause issues
such as this and is very difficult to diagnose.

Take a player at a time out of the sync group to try to determine if
there is a particular player that is causing the issue.

[slim] Ukraine

2022-02-27 Thread d6jg

Like everyone else I’m horrified at the current situation and I’d like
to keep as up to date as possible.
Does anyone know of an internet radio stream broadcast in English from
Ukraine? I’ve found a station called Kiss FM that’s clearly switched to
24hour news but in Ukrainian. Anyone?

Easiest and simplest is just connect your laptop to your HiFi. You can
do this in a low fi way by using the headphone out on your laptop into
your HiFi (3.5mm to 2xRCA) or a more HiFi way using a USB DAC.
If you really want to get the sound into LMS then it can be done but
it’s a bit esoteric

Re: [slim] PiCore

2022-02-22 Thread d6jg

There are indeed lots of routers that will only allow a reservation
-inside- their reservation scope - Fritzbox as just one example - but
may will allow it inside and outside.

Why is a reservation better than a static?
1) if you decide to change your subnet - from 192.168.1.0 to
192.168.2.0 for example - then you would effectively divorce anything
with a true staic IP from the network. Using a mac address based
reservation would just require a device reboot to get it back.
2) you need to change DNS servers
3) you need to change the Gateway

That’s not down to Tidal though is it? It’s the label releasing a poor
digital remastering and probably applies to the same ELP album streamed
from elsewhere.
I can see the take up of FLAC streaming causing a reversal of the
“loudness war” to some extent as even the buds brigade now often opt for
high end ones. Hopefully the labels will revert to more dynamic
mastering going forward.

Re: [slim] PiCore

2022-02-12 Thread d6jg

There are two stages in WiFi connection.
First is the SSID connection to the WiFi Access Point or Router and
second is the acquisition of IP address from DHCP server and connection
to the network subnet.
If you attempt to give the Pi a static IP address you simply will not be
able to tell whether it is working or not or more accurately when it
fails which bit you should troubleshoot.
It’s fairly common for WiFi to be up but the client can’t receive an IP
address for some reason or other.

You should not attempt to use the piCorePlayer options for a static IP
when using WiFi. There is a good technical reason for this.
Instead reserve an IP for the WiFi MAC address in your router’s DHCP
settings (most routers have this capability although some dress it up as
something else eg Fritzbox).

I can see the benefit in connecting the mscaler to the Dave by bnc to
enable upsampling and the RF noise issue generated by the mscaler but my
quick read of mscaler manual does not indicate any benefit on the input
side. It say “computer via USB or CD transport via bnc”

What is gained by the sbc-dx -> bnc-> part? Why not USB -> Chord Hugo

If I understand correctly you are delivering 16/44.1 FLAC to the Hugo

things - it just converts to BNC doesn’t it?

Does the NUC have analog audio out?
You could try that which might eliminate Squeezelite as the issue and
then try a USB DAC if you have one. If that has issues it would point to
a USB issue - perhaps losing power for a microsecond or similar. If a
USB DAC works flawlessly then the issue could well be the sbc-dx device.

I can’t resist saying - is the counterbalance properly adjusted?

Seriously. Are these USB 3 ports? I saw somewhere that the perceived
wisdom is to not use USB 3 for Audio DACs but instead use USB 1 or 2.
The Pi 4 has both USB 3 (blue) and USB 2 and I’m sure I read a technote
to ensure you use USB 2 for audio.

I submit Sir that you are hooked!
You will now spend countless hours in an OCD driven pursuit of the
perfect set of tags and a totally organised library exactly as you want
it. Good luck. Some of us know from experience that it is a very
enjoyable and quite rewarding but ultimately impossible exercise.

I think the Fritzbox may have a "wireless client isolation" setting
which makes it impossible for wireless clients to see either each other
or anything else on the network - is this switched on by default?
You'd typically use this facility in a Guest WiFi scenario.

Re: [slim] Comparisons between current (2022) streaming service integrations?

2022-01-27 Thread d6jg

I have Spotify and Qobuz.
Spotify has slightly more content but is of course ham strung at
320kbps. Spotty is probably the best integration.
But I use Qobuz much much more and I’m probably dropping Spotify.
I have Qobuz at HD. The integration is a close second to Spotty and the
Qobuz library is pretty good these days.
I’ve tried both Tidal and Deezer in the past but chose Qobuz for its HD
content even though logic tells me my ears can’t hear any difference
over 16/44.1 FLAC.

Re: [slim] Lms

Cover Art
Sorry if you know this but feel it is important to mention how LMS deals
with cover art and the order it uses to decide what to display

If album art is embedded in files it will use the embedded art from the
FIRST track file it finds within a folder - having different cover art
in different files is therefore a redundant exercise.
If no embedded art is found LMS looks for the existence of folder.jpg or
cover.jpg within the album folder and uses that.
Competent rippers such as dbPoweramp can be set up in such a way as to
not create embedded art in FLACs but instead to always create
folder.jpg

A useful online resource for high quality artwork is
albumartexchange.com - account required but free.

Amongst other things MAI can look up and display Artist images. If you
want that - it looks superb in Material - then you can designate a
specific artist artwork folder. MAI will then scan for artist images and
place them into this folder. Usefully if it can't find an image it will
also create a 0 byte file called "exact artist name.missing". You can
use then manually populate with an image of your choice by finding a
.jpg or .png of said arist and renaming it "exact artist name".jpg and
delete the .missing file accordingly.

That isn’t why I asked. I wondered what the use case was.
I have my TV wired into an AVR which also has a Pi plugged into it and
quite often I listen to music on headphones while Swmbo watches TV but I
use an iPhone with iPeng controlled by Material and an Audioquest
Dragonfly to listen. It lets me move around but still gives me HiFi
quality music.

Start with a Pi4 as server then with a suitable USB3 HD but the
consensus is that as a server it should be connected via LAN. It is
technically possible to run on WiFi but not advised.
Running on Windows just isn’t as stable.

The Audiolab M-DAC would do it but it’s overpriced for your requirement
and not something you’d hide behind the TV. Very flexible though.

The latest version of the Khadas Tone Board I mentioned earlier would be
perfect if it had optical instead of coax. It has the necessary
headphone amp stage plus USB in (for Pi) and coax.

I have one of each Polyvection device. The Digi32 is a beta test
version. Both it and the Dac32 are very capable devices and surprisingly
good but I’m not sure if you’d hear any upgrade if you used the Digi32
with your existing DAC. Your big issue isn’t really the player device
it’s the functionality of your DAC which may be difficult to replace.

The OPs DAC has 2 x Optical in with headphone amp and RCA to his amp.
The Chromecast is in use with the Castbridge plugin and uses one of the
optical in. TV uses other.
Not sure how the switching operates

Re: [slim] Rational Lounge Integration of LMS and TV Audio

2022-01-10 Thread d6jg

The weakest component in your setup is the Chrome Audio. It’s ok but the
DAC chip isn’t the best but I assume you are using its optical out.
Is there Ethernet behind your TV? If so I’d get a Pi4 and set it up as a
server and client. As regards the choice of DAC or Digi out I think it
depends upon just how good the Beresford is and whether your amp has a
suitable input for the TV sound.
I run a Pi4 coupled with a Khadas USB Tone Board in my Living Room. The
Khadas was about £100 with case and is quite highly rated in reviews but
my TV audio is dealt with via hdmi arc.
What input types are available on your amp?

It will need all the CDN IPs to work.
If you can send ALL traffic from your LMS server down the VPN (which may
be possible if you use a separate VPN router eg a Pi and make that the
LMS gateway) then it may be straightforward.
I have a friend in the South of France who has a site to site VPN to his
office in London.
Everything from France is routed via London and as a result he can get
full UK services eg BBC. This is his private VPN so isn’t detected like
one of the popular VPN services may be.

Re: [slim] Which factors determine streams served to different geographical locations?

2022-01-10 Thread d6jg

As Michael says it is predominantly IP based but it’s not always
accurate as some ISPs have traded IP ranges across geographic boundaries
to meet demand. Not all firewall manufacturers - where the allow or
block takes place - have properly kept up with the range movements. Then
there are the private VPN services where the rights holders try to keep
up with their particular IP ranges and seek to block them accordingly.

Re: [slim] Sync Options for a live DJ

2021-11-10 Thread d6jg

Yes. Low number of seconds. People often post about using LMS to do
multi-room audio from TV. It just can't be done without unacceptable
latency.

I have a Pi that takes the audio from my turntable in Living Room and
sends it via Liquidsoap to an instance of Icecast2 which LMS (on another
Pi) tunes in to. It has about 5 seconds latency but as ALL audio is
listened to via LMS it is fine.

If I had said turntable also plugged in to an amp with speakers - like
your Lounge DJ setup - then the audio in my Living Room would be 5
seconds ahead of that played via LMS.

Latency may be an issue but you could try VLC on the mac generating a
stream and "tune in" on LMS as if it were a radio station

https://wiki.videolan.org/Documentation:Streaming_HowTo/Easy_Streaming/

Alternatively you could try the WAVIN Plugin but again there may be too
much latency - less than with VLC though

Running LMS on WiFi isn't recommended.
Running LMS on WifFi with an NFS mount to a NAS even less so.
If there is any delay in WiFi connection the mount is likely to fail. I
doubt there is anything wrong with your NAS - it will all be network

It’s not the needle drop. It’s the fact that the playout mechanism
currently goes from digital to analogue before being encoded into the
digital streams. The analogue out is a Pi while the analogue input is a
bog standard Realtek sound card. This is the weak point of the whole
delivery mechanism and is more than likely where the flatness is
introduced.
This will be replaced by a digital only delivery in due course but the
previous digital only incarnation on a VM had the noise interference.

Yes there is Replay Gain in play.
On the SQ being flatter than local FLACs - part of the audio chain as it
stands is digital to analogue then back to digital. This is the current
situation due to a number of reasons and it’s not going to be the case
long term - which is why I know the SQ can be easily improved.
About 40% of the stuff played is from needle drops at 16/44.1.
On the 50-60 second out of sync cover art up date. At present Paul’s
Radio Now Playing has no means of “timing” the tracks because we don’t
currently provide it. This will be changed in due course so in future
changes will be more accurate.
NB to get cover art you need the Radio Now Playing plugin.

Re: [slim] Testers wanted

2021-10-22 Thread d6jg

The new hardware has been live for getting in for 36 hours and I’ve
obviously been monitoring what’s going on. I’m really pleased with the
SQ especially as I know that it would be easy to improve it a little
further but as far as I am concerned the FLAC stream sounds pretty damn
good with zero burps during my monitoring.

I have been surprised how good it sounds on my Kitchen Echo Show using
Phil’s Alexa skill.

I’ve kept an eye on listener levels and I know that a number of people
have popped in and out. We could really now do with some feedback on the
SQ as listeners hear it if people have any.

Can't remember whether it was you or someone else who commented on the
volume level - but it has been boosted up to try to match other stations

Why do you use Music Folder? There are reasons to use it but if you can
explain why it may help someone understand your issue more clearly.
If you used Artists or Albums or New Music you'd see exactly what you
are asking for.

Re: [slim] Testers wanted

2021-10-21 Thread d6jg

Apologies for the interruptions that have occurred recently but I am now
pleased to report that the new hardware I'd been promising is installed,
configured and now live. Early signs are that this seems to have
eradicated the burping noise interference that we were seeing which was
why the hardware change was needed. Implementation was delayed due to
access issues to the data centre and paid work getting in the way.

At the same time we have also made some background changes to our code
to make things more efficient from a server memory perspective. These
changes have been done in such a way as to make no difference to the
Paul's Radio Now Playing plugin or to Phil's beta Alexa skill (more
testers of this needed).

Juke is still in test mode - playlist remains in a semi-auto mode - but
we will now be able to start serious work on our playlist programming.

Please re-visit and let us know if you find issues. We can currently
accommodate 100 listeners at a time (theoretically unlimited when we go
fully live).

The auto playlist remains Rock, Jazz, Soul & Blues based.

Thanks

Re: [slim] VU-meter

2021-10-18 Thread d6jg

The VU meter screensaver is available via JiveLite or SqueezePlay but
two caveats
1. Although both can be installed on Windows I don’t think you’ll get
them full screen
2. The VU meter is only available when the device is a player. You
cannot control another player and get a VU meter.

New hardware ready and waiting to go to data centre but delayed by 1)
paid work, 2) UK petrol crisis 3) paid work again. Hopefully I’ll find
time next week.
