I bought all my squeezeboxen shortly after they were released. I've had
some problems with the original squeezebox (not Classic) but not with
other models.

2 SLIMP3s - no problems since original purchase
3 Squeezebox 1s - 1 VFD display died about 1.5 years after purchase,
replacement part purchased. 1 unknown problem on the main circuit board
about 2 years after purchase (different unit). This one got put back in
the box for spare parts and replaced with a SB3.
1 Squeezebox 3 - no problems since original purchase

Hope this helps - despite those problems I will continue to buy more

required :)

Re: [slim] Need help with MP3Gain/normalization

2008-08-30 Thread jth

The changes that mp3gain makes to your mp3 file are not permanent. The
changes are reversible if mp3gain has written tags to your files or
you
have noted the gain elsewhere. (I have written a script that writes
the gain to a database as well as adding it to the id3v2 tag - I don't
want mp3gain APE tags in my files.)

Applying the gain directly is useful if you use your mp3 files on
devices
that don't support the tags - which I've found to be most of them. :(

If memory serves (and this was a long time ago), to reset the SLIMP3
you
need to hold down the + button on the remote while connecting the

If your IR sensor is having problems this may not work. You could also
try reloading the firmware, but I believe this also requires IR to be
working.

Re: [slim] SB3 rebuffering and not recovering

Ouch, this problem hit me hard during a party where the
SB3 hit the rebuffering problem 3 times during the night.
I tried a network test right after one of the incidents
at 320 kbps and it hit 100%.

Do I have a defective SB3? The Squeezebox didn't win any
new converts tonight unfortunately. I'm still wondering
why the SB3 doesn't recover. Back in the old days I had
a SLIMP3 in a marginal wireless area in my house and on
the occasions that it did skip, it always recovered and
continued playing eventually.

Re: [slim] SB3 rebuffering and not recovering

2008-02-09 Thread jth

The PC is wired to the router. The router is a Linksys WRT54G
with Tomato Firmware.

Tomato reports signal quality of 41 for the SB3, signal quality
for the 2 SB1s in more remote areas of the house are 44 and 47.
I never have problems with the SB1s. It is odd that the signal
quality for the SB3 is lower, as it sits in the next room from
the access point with only 1 wall in between.

The SB3 itself reports 73 for signal strength, with the more
remote SB1s reporting 60 and 68, which makes a little more sense.

For a while I had increased the power output of the access
point to help with some Jive Hardware Beta issues, but I dropped
it back down to default. I may try boosting it again to see if
that helps matters.

me - not getting stuck on the rebuffering phase.

I'm not using Squeezenetwork or Internet radio when this happens,
it is all my own local mp3 files. Thanks for the pointer to the
bug...

Re: [slim] SB3 rebuffering and not recovering

I've been trying to keep things as simple as possible while

the rebuffer occurs. I'm going to have to start trying some of
the debug settings next.

Re: [slim] SB3 rebuffering and not recovering

2008-02-09 Thread jth

One thing that I can't figure out is why there is such a large
burst in traffic between the SB3 and the server on each song
transition.

The attached graph shows spikes up to 5600 kbps during the 4 song
transitions while the normal data flow during playback is around
200 kbps.

I've confirmed this with a packet analyzer - what's causing the
spikes, and might that cause problems on a wireless network?

[slim] SB3 rebuffering and not recovering

2008-02-06 Thread jth

I'm having an intermittent problem with my new SB3 - every once
in a while (sometimes once a week, sometimes twice a day) I get
the message Rebuffering 1% (or 2%) ... and the SB3 hangs at this
point. All my music is high bitrate VBR mp3.

Is there anything I can do to diagnose this problem? The
rebuffering itself I can live with if the SB3 recovered, filled
its buffer and kept playing, but it doesn't seem to do that. I
followed the advice of a previous poster and set the SB3 to
static IP (it was previously DHCP) but that didn't help.

The SB3 is wireless and replaced an SB1 wireless at the same
location. The SB1 didn't have any troubles there. Wireless signal
is about 70-80% and there are no APs on the same channel.
I tried a network test at 320 kbps and was able
to get 98%. I'm running the latest 7.0 nightly and firmware.

Thanks for any advice or suggestions!

Re: [slim] SB3 rebuffering and reset problems

2008-01-13 Thread jth

I have been having similar problem with rebuffering with my SB3. The SB3
is a recent addition to my network, replacing a SB1.

The Rebuffering 1% ... message has been occurring with some frequency.
The problem is that it never rebuffers, at that point the music just
stops. This is with my own mp3 files. I'm able to hit play and start
the song again, the SB3 does not crash.

I noticed that wireless traffic on my WLAN spikes on each song change,
going from around 256 kbps (my mp3s are VBR, so this varies a lot) to
3600-4000 kbps. I haven't yet done a packet capture to see what these
spikes are.

Because of the spikes, I made sure the web interface was not running,
disabled AudioScrobbler and my SBC to see if those were the cause, but
the spikes continue. I wonder if the burst of traffic is overwhelming
the SB3 somehow.

I ran network health tests at 320 kbps and 500 kbps and it stayed at
100%. Wireless strength is 80. I don't think there's any packet loss.
The SB1 in that location never had problems. There are no warnings or
errors in the server log. I didn't see a likely bug in the bug db for
this.

I'm running

SqueezeCenter Version: 7.0 - 16224 - Debian - EN - utf8
Server IP address: 192.168.1.7
Perl Version: 5.8.8 i686-linux
MySQL Version: 5.0.45-Debian_1ubuntu3.1-log

[slim] Mostly dead SB1 - any advice?

2007-10-27 Thread jth

The VFD on my first SB1 purchased (later upgraded to SB1G) died some
time ago. I didn't want to pay the replacement cost and the audio
portion was working fine, so I left it alone. Now several months later
most of the rest of the SB1 seems dead as well. It no longer shows up
in the Slimserver player list. However I can ping it and it does send
and receive UDP packets to and from slimserver when there is IR
activity.

I removed the VFD and put it into another working SB1G (not upgraded,
original) and the VFD does not work over there. The working VFD does
not work in the broken SB1 either.

Should I put the old SB1G out of its misery, or is there anything else
left to try?

Thanks!

You can flash your WRT54GL with third-party firmware, like dd-wrt, and
boost the power and range of the access point. I think on the highest
safe setting, you'd have no problem getting a signal in even a very

[slim] Re: Volume level (mp3gain replaygain) MP3 and FLAC

2006-07-12 Thread jth

One possibility - you could disable the Squeezebox's internal
flac handling and adjust the volume downward in your
slimserver-convert.conf file. The
--apply-replaygain-which-is-not-lossless option takes a
dB value for adjustment:

flc wav * *
[flac] -dcs --force-raw-format --endian=little --sign=signed
--apply-replaygain-which-is-not-lossless=-3 --skip=$START$
--until=$END$ $FILE$

This will reduce the volume of flacs by -3dB. It will stream
as wav instead of flac so your network will need to handle
the added bandwidth. If the slimserver-convert.conf file does
not exist, create one in your main slimserver software
directory and restart the server.

I'm pretty sure there is an option in mp3gain to remove ape
tags from the files. However, if you remove those tags you
will not be able to automatically undo the gain you've applied.
It is still possible to manually undo the gain if you remove
the tags, but you will need to keep a separate record of the
gain applied to each file. This is the old way that mp3gain
used to operate.

2006-02-16 Thread jth

I'm currently working on enhancing the support script for the
DirectPlay plugin to output PDF files with cover art included.
I'm not sure how to handle customization of the output - it is
probably easiest to include a few sample templates to choose from.

Right now as long as you're not removing music and performing
a full rescan, the database IDs of albums and tracks tend to
stay the same, so one thing I'm looking at is an option to
print only albums added from a certain date. This will allow
you to add pages to your book rather than reprinting everything.

I've also got proof-of-concept code working to 'fix' the database
renumbering issue by using a fingerprint of a track rather than
slimserver's ID number. This is going to take a while to see the
light of day though.

If you run the command-line version of mp3gain without any
switches (mp3gain album-track-01.mp3 album-track-02.mp3 ...)
it should add the tags but not adjust the gain itself.

You'll need to run it once for every album you have. That
shouldn't be difficult to script if you have one album per
directory.

Of course, test it out before running it against your entire
collection.

Actually the default behavior of mp3gain as I mentioned should

mp3gain can also apply the gain directly to the files so that the

If the server ever supports 'smart playlists', you could play all songs

Then the burden is on you to create the tag on the explicit songs.

I can see triggering playlist creation based on strings in the comment

to create enough options with the basic set of metadata tags to please

[slim] Re: SB1: Feeling Forgotten

2005-09-19 Thread jth

Part of the issue may be that the SB1 firmware could not be open
sourced, so even if the community had the resources to add additional
features, it would be difficult or impossible.

As the owner of 5 pre-SB2 devices, I must admit being envious of the
additional features of the SB2, but at the end of the day I think my
current setup is just about perfect for my needs so I'm not
complaining.

2005-07-29 Thread jth

Anywho, I have no idea what SlimServer does with MP3s that have both
tags, but it probably just looks at one set and ignores the other.

That's right, it reads id3v2 and ignores v1 if they are both set.

I don't think there have been any bug reports on the pipelining issue.
You will probably want to raise a new one in bugzilla so the issue
doesn't get lost. I'm seeing the same sort of behavior with Firefox as
well.

[slim] Re: SLIMP3 DHCP and static IP question

2005-07-03 Thread jth

There's another option. You can keep using dhcp but use a
fixed address on the server side. If you're using standard
ISC dhcpd you configure it like this:

host slimp3-01 {
hardware ethernet 00:04:20:02:03:f1;
fixed-address 192.168.1.21;
}

Enter the URL

about:config

Then search for network.http.pipelining and set to false.

How stable is the Beta? While tinkering with the SB has become a hobby

If you have a SO and like to tinker around, my own experience tells me
you're better off with your own Squeezebox and seperate server :)

If by stable you mean no crashes the beta is stable for me on NetBSD.

Yes - all the flac versions should be at least 1.1.1.

[slim] Re: FLAC replaygain tutorial please...

2005-05-23 Thread jth

I know how to do it with squeezebox1, I can make a guess with
squeezebox2. I assume you want to use flac decoding on the hardware
itself.

Create a file called 'slimserver-convert.conf' in the base directory of
your slimserver install (in the same directory as convert.conf). In this
file place these two lines:

flc flc * *
[flac] -dcs --force-raw-format --endian=little --sign=signed
--apply-replaygain-which-is-not-lossless=a --skip=$START$ --until=$END$
$FILE$ | [flac] -cs --totally-silent --compression-level-0 --endian
little --sign signed --channels 2 --bps 16 --sample-rate 44100 -

Now restart slimserver and give it a try. Again, this is just a guess
but I hope it works.

[slim] Re: suggestion: negative nice startup

2005-05-18 Thread jth

I'm pretty sure the slimserver will be able to do what you want
already.

Take a look at the --priority option. You'll have to start the
server as root to use this, so also use --user and --group to
change the effective ids of the server after it starts.

There's also a --pidfile option as well if you prefer.

[slim] Re: Problems with MP3 Cue sheets

2005-05-12 Thread jth

towerofchaos Wrote:
I am running slimserver (latest prod. release 6.0.2-1) on a debian
(sarge) linux box and I am having a few oddities with mp3 files that
have cue sheets. These are albums with a single mp3 file with cue
 sheets giving track information.

 1. During playback my squeezebox always shows the track I started on
while scrolling across the screen, but then gets it right when it stops
scrolling. When the scrolling starts again it goes back to the wrong
track. If I turn off my squeezebox, then turn it on again and continue
playing from the current position, the current track becomes the one
 listed during scrolling.
I'm not seeing this here (6.0.2/NetBSD)

 2. When selecting a particular track from one of these albums, it almost
always gets the position wrong in the mp3 file. (The cue lists were
created automatically by EAC whilst ripping the orignial cd's. And I
have pulled the mp3 file into goldwave to check the cuesheet timings
 are correct; which they are.)
As far as I know slimserver can't seek accurately within VBR or ABR mp3
files. Try encoding in CBR.

2005-04-24 Thread jth

If you use single-album flac files with external cue sheets, it is
possible to lose 1/100 of a second of audio at the end of a track
because of a rounding issue. Most people shouldn't notice this though

[slim] Re: Just getting started...

2005-04-19 Thread jth

If you are going the mp3 route, I highly recommend using one of the LAME
encoder's high quality VBR presets.

version 3.90.3 with setting --alt-preset standard or
version 3.96.1 with setting --preset standard

are recommended. Using CBR is just wasting space in my opinion. You may
also want to try a listening test with --preset extreme - a higher
bitrate VBR setting than standard. If you can't tell the difference
on the type of music you listen to the most, use the standard
setting.

[slim] Re: Just getting started...

2005-04-19 Thread jth

Squeezebox2 supports mp3, flac, and wav in the hardware - so these are
natural choices if you're starting from scratch.

The other route is flac - http://flac.sf.net/. flac is a lossless audio
compressor. This means your music should sound the same as CD, at the
expense of greater file size than mp3.

You'll get compression of 20 - 60% with flac depending on the style of
music. Typically it uses about 3-5x as much space on disk as a high
quality mp3 file.

Again, you may or may not be able to tell the difference with your
equipment and ears, so add some flac files to your listening mix. Get a
friend to help you perform a double-blind ABX test if you're really
serious about it. :-)

The server is only rebooted about 2-3 times a year however...

No, there is no way to delete tracks from the interface.

You can 'zap' a song by holding down the add button while the song is
playing. This will move the song to a playlist called Zapped Songs that
you can refer to later.
