The changes that mp3gain makes to your mp3 file are not permanent. The changes are reversible if mp3gain has written tags to your files or you have noted the gain elsewhere. (I have written a script that writes the gain to a database as well as adding it to the id3v2 tag - I don't want mp3gain APE tags in my files.) Applying the gain directly is useful if you use your mp3 files on devices that don't support the tags - which I've found to be most of them. :( -- jth jth's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=48 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=51715 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] SB3 rebuffering and not recovering
The PC is wired to the router. The router is a Linksys WRT54G with Tomato Firmware. Tomato reports signal quality of 41 for the SB3, signal quality for the 2 SB1s in more remote areas of the house are 44 and 47. I never have problems with the SB1s. It is odd that the signal quality for the SB3 is lower, as it sits in the next room from the access point with only 1 wall in between. The SB3 itself reports 73 for signal strength, with the more remote SB1s reporting 60 and 68, which makes a little more sense. For a while I had increased the power output of the access point to help with some Jive Hardware Beta issues, but I dropped it back down to default. [slim] SB3 rebuffering and not recovering
I'm having an intermittent problem with my new SB3 - every once in a while (sometimes once a week, sometimes twice a day) I get the message Rebuffering 1% (or 2%) ... and the SB3 hangs at this point. All my music is high bitrate VBR mp3. Is there anything I can do to diagnose this problem? The rebuffering itself I can live with if the SB3 recovered, filled its buffer and kept playing, but it doesn't seem to do that. I followed the advice of a previous poster and set the SB3 to static IP (it was previously DHCP) but that didn't help. The SB3 is wireless and replaced an SB1 wireless at the same location. The SB1 didn't have any troubles there. Wireless signal is about 70-80% and there are no APs on the same channel. I tried a network test at 320 kbps and was able to get 98%. Re: [slim] SB3 rebuffering and reset problems
I have been having similar problem with rebuffering with my SB3. The SB3 is a recent addition to my network, replacing a SB1. The Rebuffering 1% ... message has been occurring with some frequency. The problem is that it never rebuffers, at that point the music just stops. This is with my own mp3 files. I'm able to hit play and start the song again, the SB3 does not crash. I noticed that wireless traffic on my WLAN spikes on each song change, going from around 256 kbps (my mp3s are VBR, so this varies a lot) to 3600-4000 kbps. I haven't yet done a packet capture to see what these spikes are. Because of the spikes, I made sure the web interface was not running, disabled AudioScrobbler and my SBC to see if those were the cause, but the spikes continue. I wonder if the burst of traffic is overwhelming the SB3 somehow. I ran network health tests at 320 kbps and 500 kbps and it stayed at 100%. Wireless strength is 80. I don't think there's any packet loss. The SB1 in that location never had problems. There are no warnings or errors in the server log. I didn't see a likely bug in the bug db for this. [slim] Mostly dead SB1 - any advice?
The VFD on my first SB1 purchased (later upgraded to SB1G) died some time ago. I didn't want to pay the replacement cost and the audio portion was working fine, so I left it alone. Now several months later most of the rest of the SB1 seems dead as well. It no longer shows up in the Slimserver player list. However I can ping it and it does send and receive UDP packets to and from slimserver when there is IR activity. I removed the VFD and put it into another working SB1G (not upgraded, original) and the VFD does not work over there. The working VFD does not work in the broken SB1 either. Should I put the old SB1G out of its misery, or is there anything else left to try? [slim] Re: Volume level (mp3gain replaygain) MP3 and FLAC
One possibility - you could disable the Squeezebox's internal flac handling and adjust the volume downward in your slimserver-convert.conf file. The --apply-replaygain-which-is-not-lossless option takes a dB value for adjustment: flc wav * * [flac] -dcs --force-raw-format --endian=little --sign=signed --apply-replaygain-which-is-not-lossless=-3 --skip=$START$ --until=$END$ $FILE$ This will reduce the volume of flacs by -3dB. It will stream as wav instead of flac so your network will need to handle the added bandwidth. If the slimserver-convert.conf file does not exist, create one in your main slimserver software directory and restart the server. -- jth jth's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=48 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25452 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I'm currently working on enhancing the support script for the DirectPlay plugin to output PDF files with cover art included. I'm not sure how to handle customization of the output - it is probably easiest to include a few sample templates to choose from. Right now as long as you're not removing music and performing a full rescan, the database IDs of albums and tracks tend to stay the same, so one thing I'm looking at is an option to print only albums added from a certain date. This will allow you to add pages to your book rather than reprinting everything. I've also got proof-of-concept code working to 'fix' the database renumbering issue by using a fingerprint of a track rather than slimserver's ID number. Squeezebox2 supports mp3, flac, and wav in the hardware - so these are natural choices if you're starting from scratch. The other route is flac - http://flac.sf.net/. flac is a lossless audio compressor. This means your music should sound the same as CD, at the expense of greater file size than mp3. You'll get compression of 20 - 60% with flac depending on the style of music. Typically it uses about 3-5x as much space on disk as a high quality mp3 file. Again, you may or may not be able to tell the difference with your equipment and ears, so add some flac files to your listening mix.
