What would be the Squeezebox that's most suitable for children of that age (let's say 5)? We currently own a Boom, Radio and Receiver and use iPeng on a Ipod Touch and iPhone to control the system. Squeezecenter is on a ReadyNAS NV. The Squeezeboxen you already have represents almost the complete breadth of functionality in the line: you have units with and without speakers, with and without displays, and with and without touchscreens. So you can definitely let your current experiences with that variety of devices inform your decision. To me the question is how you want the kids to interact with the system. There's no question that having a self-contained system is very convenient, but if *you* are going to be their DJ and don't want them messing about with the equipment, then all you need is another Receiver and some inexpensive powered speakers like you would buy for a computer. If you're wanting them to interact with it I would would vote for a Boom or a Radio as opposed to a Touch so you can get the built-in speakers. The decision between a Boom or a Radio for a kids room I think comes down to the color screen rather than mono vs. stereo, and I would opt for the radio specifically so that you can upload family pictures to Flickr and have those scrolling for their amusement. The nice thing about either of those units if they're going to interact is that it has those great preset buttons so you can program some stuff in there like a random playlist of kids music from your library and a some kids internet radio, etc. And then again, you could get a Boom or a Radio and put it on a high shelf for now, waiting for the one year old to get a little older before they all can be touching it ;) -- thing-fish ' Most Recent Tracks' (http://www.last.fm/user/thing-fish/?chartstyle=basicrt10) thing-fish's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5288 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=69388 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

In my house we have three FB users and two Flickr users, each with their own set of contacts and shared items. [slim] Linksys by Cisco launches direct competitors to Squeezebox products
Reading the new Sound and Vision I found out that Linksys by Cisco has released several new product that are direct (albeit uniformly more expensive) competitors for the Squeezebox line 'DMC 250, the Director' (http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/products/DMC250), equivalent to the Squeezebox Classic, except that it has an integrated amplifier so you can add speakers and make it into a Squeezebox Boom, for 449.99. 'DMP 100, The Player' (http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/products/DMP100), equivalent to the Squeezebox Receiver, for 299.99. 'DMRW 1000, The Controller' (http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/products/DMRW1000), equivalent to the Squeezebox Controller, for 349.99 'DMC 350, The Condctor' (http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/products/DMC350), equivalent to nothing in the Squeezebox line, in that it is like a Touchscreen Boom with a built-in CD player, for 699.99 They also offer packages like 'The Premier Bundle' (http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/products/KWHA700) where you get a Director, Receiver and Controller for 999.99 While there are certainly differences (Windows only on the backend, higher priced), to a regular consumer I think they would see the new Linksys products and the Squeezebox products as direct competitors...with the added bonus in the Linksys that you can 'dock your ipod' (http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/products/MCCI40) for 79.99 and then control it like the rest of the system, and (unlike the Boom's line-in), have it available as a source to any of the zones. I'm firmly entrenched in the Squeezebox family (and happily so, except for the Receiver requiring a Controller), but I thought this was interesting and thought I'd post it here. I'm actually disappointed with Sound and Vision (something that is happening more and more often) because in their review they never mentioned Squeezebox...they only talked about the Linksys products being cheaper alternatives to Sonos. +---+ |Filename: hero_rhapsody,0.png | |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=8011| +---+ -- thing-fish ' Most Recent Tracks' (http://www.last.fm/user/thing-fish/?chartstyle=basicrt10) thing-fish's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5288 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=67094 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Easier way to sync?
Thanks to the Circuit City closeout, I now have a third Squeezebox product in the house. While we're loving it, something that was a little troublesome before is now a bigger issue: we'd like an easier way to sync the players together. My first instinct was just to go into the Menus preference for each player and get Sync moved higher in the menu hierarchy. We've done the same thing with Podcasts and Rhapsody, making them just a couple of keypresses away instead of having to go dig them out of Music Services or Extras. Alas, Sync is not available to do that with! So I guess I'm asking, is there a plugin available that will let Sync be at a higher level in the menu? I am going to install the Sync Options plugin, as I really love the idea of being able to change sync mid-song, but I don't know yet if it will do what I'm looking for. -- thing-fish ' Most Recent Tracks' (http://www.last.fm/user/thing-fish/?chartstyle=basicrt10) thing-fish's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5288 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=60556 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I specifically chose Slimserver/Squeezecenter because of its low system requirements, and eventually bought a Squeezebox and would like to get a second one. One note about that: before starting your scan, go into the MusicIP preferences and set up some exclusions. For instance, I tell it not to analyze files that contain the word podcast (all my podcasts go into a folder named /mnt/media/music/podcasts so that catches them all). If you have lots of audio or spoken word, I would make sure to tell MusicIP not to analyze them. They'll still be available in the library, but it won't spend the analysis time. With that said, I've certainly found that with all the settings at their defaults, if I seed a mix with saxophone-led bebop jazz, I'm going to get a fair amount of saxophone and a fair amount of jazz. If I seed using something with a lot of vocal harmonies, much of the mix will have vocal harmonies. Upbeat seeds generally result in upbeat mixes. I don't know how it does any of this, but it generally does it very well. The mixes it comes up with often remind me of my very favorite FM DJs from my youth, the independent stations where coming up with a flow was an art form. technojunkie;309692 Wrote: I ask because, having tried to finely tune the mix paramaters within SC and the MusicMagicServer I'm still getting some very odd mixes. Does the validation process flag tracks by genre, style of music, feel/mood of music or some other method ? The songs in my library have not been all correctly tagged for genre but I was expecting the MusicIP validation process to log this information. It definitely seems to be music content-related. Though I have noticed that if I pick a live recording that's got a lot of crowd noise, the mix will include other recordings with crowd noise. Usage of the genre tag, which is not analysis related, is a flag you can set (which restricts the mix to the genre of the seed). technojunkie;309692 Wrote: However if, for example, I select a rock ballad as the seed song, I get a lot of songs in the mix that are not by rock artists and certainly not rock ballads or anything similar in style or mood. Am I expecting too much from MusicIp or do I need to do some more fine tuning of the mix settings and, if so, which ones ? It sounds like you want a pretty restrictive mix, so perhaps you should set the Genre flag to Yes to restrict the genre (then you should only get Rock in the above example). In addition, increase the number for Style. The default is 0, which means to ignore the seed style. (Note that style is undefined). For Variety, what I've found is that with a variety of 0, you can create a mix from a seed and get 10 tracks, then immediately create a mix from that same seed and you'll get the exact same tracks again. But if you have Variety set to a higher number, it will vary the mix a little each time you seed with the same track. My default settings are Variety of 2 and style of 20, no genre restriction. With those settings, if I pick a track by Suzanne Vega that's just her and her guitar, I will get a mix that is largely (but not entirely) acoustic-based and will almost exclusively feature female vocals. I hope some of this helps! I love MusicIP mixer. I've said it before: I wouldn't have bought a Squeezebox if it weren't for that program. The final 20% is with the actual Squeezebox, and I'd say we split the remote vs. the laptop about 50/50. I agree with other posters and even some of the Logitech people that are posting here: I don't think the remote is a viable, pocketable mowing-the-lawn, portable device. When the iPod touch gets native wifi streaming I would consider it over the SBC in a heartbeat, if for no other reason than when I leave the house I can take the iPod with me and keep playing it, where I can't do that with the remote. But it doesn't, and I can't afford the monthly fees to get the data plan that would enable streaming the stream.mp3 or internet radio onto the phone. Note to Logitech regarding wifi streaming though: several people have commented that it eats the battery life. Personally, I don't have a problem with that. As long as a wifi streaming device could get 2 hours streaming, I think it would meet almost every need I have for it, whether it be working out or mowing the lawn or gardening or whatever. Again though, I don't think the SBC, even modded to, is going to fit that bill as it doesn't really seem to be meant to be subjected to a workout or a garden or whatever. Note that even though those were dealbreakers for the most part, it WAS fun to use the DS to control the music. It actually looked good and was quite operational, but only while it was a live connection. -- thing-fish ' Most Recent Tracks' (http://www.last.fm/user/thing-fish/?chartstyle=basicrt10) thing-fish's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5288 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41813 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

As I see it, this is not actually chaper: $399 for the Duet is *more* than the $299 Squeezebox, since the $150 receiver requires the $299 remote for setup. If/when later software releases make it so the remote isn't required for setup, I'm probably in for two receivers. Note that I think the output jack on the remote (once enabled) is indeed very neat, but does limit the whole wireless aspect of the remote if it's anchored to powered speakers in the kitchen or garage or whatever. That makes it $50 cheaper than two SB3's. The more SBR's you add, the cheaper it gets ;) I already have a $299 Squeezebox, so to add one more room I will add $399, for total of roughly 700, roughly 100 more than a second Squeezebox. I agree 100% though that once you get into more and more rooms it's a different ballgame, regardless of how many current SB3s you might already have, though then you get into the situation where you don't have a remote in each room. Re: [slim] Scanning MusicIP
I haven't had that specific problem but have certainly had occasional quirks with MusicIP and Slimserver. Try doing these things, in this order: - Make sure that Slimserver is set to use MusicIP in the Server Settings-Plugins, and that the port is right - Clear out the Music Folder and Playlists folder in Slimserver's Settings-Basic Settings - Close Slimserver - Make sure that MusicMagic is listing the stuff you expect. Make sure the API service is turned on. - Open Slimserver - Make sure that MusicMagic is listed in your Server Settings (meaning that SlimServer sees it and is connected to it) - clear library and rescan. Unfortunately this will take a really really long time, but you probably already know that. I'm no pro, but love the SlimServer/MusicIP combination and have been running it for a while. The big thing is that MusicMagicMixer has to have its API service turned on (regardless of whether it's the headless or GUI version), and it needs to be running before SlimServer starts. However! At least as a temporary workaround, you can go to the Server Settings-Plugins page and tell Slimserver to load plugins on the fly instead of at startup only. Make sure MusicMagic is checked. In the event that SlimServer loads before MusicMagic, you just navigate to server settings-plugins after MusicMagic has started, and SlimServer will start using it again. For a more permanent fix, I'm assuming you're running on Windows since you talked about services.msc. I guess a lot of people may use software that rips to \artist\album\track and have problems with the / which is not a legal character in a windows directory name. Hmmm do Linux filesystems struggle with / given it's their directory separator? Basically I am confused by FreeDB having such ugly options. I will see what MusicIP thinks if I ask it to repair the tags. Remember that your tag info and your filename don't have to be the same. With that said, MusicIP is exactly what I was going to suggest: it's probably the easiest way to access 'MusicBrainz' (http://www.musicbrainz.org) for your tags, which is such a vast improvement over FreeDB that there's no comparison. The coolest thing about MusicBrainz is that it's user-editable, so if you're a fan and see something wrong, you have the power to edit it just like a Wiki. MusicBrainz also offers their own tagger called 'Picard' (http://wiki.musicbrainz.org/PicardTagger) which, while more difficult to use than MusicIP, does allow tag-based file naming, and explicitly allows you to exclude characters, do firstname lastname or lastname, firstname and that kind of stuff. You can go ahead and rip with EAC and use FreeBSD or whatever tag and filename information, then let Picard fix both the tags and the filenames. So, I use Picard and MusicIP, and on my FreeBSD system I have my files organized artist/album/track. I have Picard strip out the / for the filename, so the artist folder is actually named ACDC but the tags are AC/DC -- thing-fish [image: http://imagegen.last.fm/3line/recenttracks/thing-fish.gif] thing-fish's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5288 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31229 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Let me introduce myself: I've been a user of the SlimServer software for several years, loving it so much that I built a computer just to house my music library and SlimServer installation, researching and learning open-source operating system s (I chose FreeBSD) to do so. However, I've never been able to afford a Squeezebox. I use the software every day (in conjunction with the MusicMagicMixer after ripping my CDs with EAC and tagging them with the MusicBrainz tagger), streaming music from my home to my desktop at work. At home I have softsqueeze installed on the family laptops and they use it. So, while I absolutely hope you can continue to maintain and even improve the audiophile aspects of the current Slim Devices products, I've always hoped that there would be a low-cost alternative so that it could be more easily adopted by more typical, non-audiophile consumers (of course while still sounding great). I guess I just want you to hear from a customer who has been waiting in the wings for a lower cost product. I'm willing to sacrifice features of the current device so I can more readily get networked audio into multiple rooms of my house. Personally, I would sacrifice the built-in display and the digital outs. For display, just give me an S-Video, or even composite video, and I'll hook it into my existing home theater. Again, don't take the display and the high-end D/A converters away from the people that want them! Just hit me with a $100 product without them. :) In the meantime, I'm a very delighted SlimServer user. -- thing-fish [image: http://imagegen.last.fm/3line/recenttracks/thing-fish.gif] thing-fish's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5288 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28821 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Is there any advantage for squeezbox users to buy the premium version of MusicIP? I did not find a description about the differences. At the time that I purchased the premium version of MusicIP, that was the ONLY way to get the SlimServer integration. That was when they called themselves Predixis though...if you have found that you can do SlimServer integration with the free version, then the primary reason to upgrade is probably just to show your support. Actually look at this, this is the Free vs. Premium chart: http://www.musicip.com/mixer/features.jsp -- thing-fish [image: http://imagegen.last.fm/3line/recenttracks/thing-fish.gif] thing-fish's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5288 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28945 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Artist or album name is truncated w/extended character
You know the artist Bjork? Except that the o in her name has an umlat over it (Björk)? Well, via the Musicbrainz/Picard tagger I have the tag with the umlatted o. WMP, MusicMagicMixer and Winamp all display the tags fine. But SlimServer truncates the artist name to Bj. Similarly she has an album called Medúlla that has an extended character, and Slimserver lists it as Med, again even as Is there a setting or something I need to toggle to get this type of extended ASCII character to show correctly? Picard is using ID3v2.3.0. What REALLY has me baffled is that there are some tracks for this artist, and even the Medulla album, that display OK in Slimserver, even as others have the truncation described above! So, any recommendations for the characterset or other settings I should be using for tagging and/or Slimserver? Any help is appreciated. Note that I did test to see if MusicMagicMixer was the problem by disabling the plugin and doing a complete truncate/refresh of my music library using the path instead of MM. Same problem. :( http://www.last.fm/user/thing-fish/ -- thing-fish thing-fish's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5288 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=27280 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Siduhe;135222 Wrote: When tagging files via Picard which have umlauted / accented characters, try changing Options / Tags / Character Set. I find that sometimes setting the tag set to Latin ISO and forcing a resave in Picard, then doing a full clear and rescan fixes the problem. OK, I'll give that a try. I'm almost positive I used the Latin rather than the Unicode character set, but I'll give it a try again and force a resave. Siduhe;135222 Wrote: Do any of the accented / umlauted characters appear in the file name itself (not the tags, the actual file name) ? If so, rename the offending files without the unicode characters and do a full clear and rescan. YES. The filenames are coming right out of the tag names. I didn't think this would matter because I figured that SlimServer was getting the info out of the tag rather than the filename. Is this not the case? Note that I was thinking I had to do something about the filenames anyway, because I think that there have been times when MusicMagicMixer has not added stuff to my library because it hasn't been able to see the files in the filesystem. Don't know if I need to tweak FreeBSD or MM for that, but I was thinking along those lines anyway. If it helps SlimServer as well then that will be cool. -- thing-fish thing-fish's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5288 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=27280 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: Let's here some suggestions for SlimServer 7
JJZolx;132262 Wrote: Since 6.5 is pretty much in the bag, what do you want in SlimServer 7? I have not installed 6.5 yet; I'm running FreeBSD and though I often use nightly builds of 6.5 it seemed like 6.5 had enough changes that I wanted to just use the ports collection to upgrade. So with the disclaimer that I haven't seen 6.5 (so this feature could already be in it), what I want is simple: I want to be able to reorder/delete songs in the playlist the same way that I can reorder/delete DVDs in my Netflix queue. For those of you that haven't seen it, imagine an ordered list where the numeric position is an editable text box. If I have ten items and want to move the 10th to the 1st position and the 8th to the second position, I just type 1 and 2 in the appropriate boxes and click update. If you want to delete there's a checkbox on the line. If you entered the same number in multiple boxes it gracefully handles those ties that you may have inadvertently created. Instead of laboriously moving tracks one at a time it would allow for very quick and easy playlist editing. I would so utterly love this feature. -- thing-fish thing-fish's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5288 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=26874 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: What's your MP3 workflow?
1. Rip disc to Windows XP laptop with EAC 2. Use the MusicBrainz Picard tagger to update the tags and rename the files/folders 3. Run MP3Gain Album gain on the folder 4. Allow MusicIP's MusicMagicMixer to perform analysis on files and archive analysis within file. 5. Copy files to FreeBSD box on home network 6a. Enjoy tunes from Slimserver and MusicMagicServer running on FreeBSD box. 6b. Enjoy tunes from Windows MusicMagicMixer using FreeBSD Server as a Device Note that once MusicIP gets their MusicMagicServer to include Exclusions (no analysis on podcasts, please!) and Watch Folders, I'll probably just hop from step 2 to step 5. I can set up a Cron job set up to run MP3Gain on new files right on the FreeBSD box, and MusicMagicServer would do the analysis on new files right on the FreeBSD box. In the meantime I copy them over to FreeBSD all set to go. -- thing-fish thing-fish's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5288 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=26804 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
