 that age (let's say 5)?
We currently own a Boom, Radio and Receiver and use iPeng on a Ipod
Touch and iPhone to control the system. Squeezecenter is on a ReadyNAS
 NV.

The Squeezeboxen you already have represents almost the complete
breadth of functionality in the line: you have units with and without
speakers, with and without displays, and with and without touchscreens.
So you can definitely let your current experiences with that variety of
devices inform your decision.

To me the question is how you want the kids to interact with the
system. There's no question that having a self-contained system is very
convenient, but if *you* are going to be their DJ and don't want them
messing about with the equipment, then all you need is another Receiver
and some inexpensive powered speakers like you would buy for a computer.

If you're wanting them to interact with it I would would vote for a
Boom or a Radio as opposed to a Touch so you can get the built-in
speakers. The decision between a Boom or a Radio for a kids room I
think comes down to the color screen rather than mono vs. stereo, and I
would opt for the radio specifically so that you can upload family
pictures to Flickr and have those scrolling for their amusement. The
nice thing about either of those units if they're going to interact is
that it has those great preset buttons so you can program some stuff in
there like a random playlist of kids music from your library and a some
kids internet radio, etc.

And then again, you could get a Boom or a Radio and put it on a high
shelf for now, waiting for the one year old to get a little older before
they all can be touching it ;)

I hope they reconsider not including a software player right with the

my introduction to the SlimDevices family: I was specifically looking
for a way to catalog my music and stream it from home to work. I later
started using SoftSqueeze and only after doing that for a couple of
years did I buy my first Squeezebox. I do not think I would have spent
nearly a grand with Slim/Logitech without SoftSqueeze to show me what I

They're making a mistake when they don't include it in the server.

Speaking in the abstract regarding social networks, in a multi-member

Also regarding what's the point?, I second 'ddewey'

FB has more than '300 million active users'

accustomed to being able to interact with FB from all kinds of devices
from their phones to their XBoxes. It's a natural fit when you have a

[slim] Linksys by Cisco launches direct competitors to Squeezebox products

2009-08-27 Thread thing-fish

Reading the new Sound and Vision I found out that Linksys by Cisco has
released several new product that are direct (albeit uniformly more
expensive) competitors for the Squeezebox line

'DMC 250, the Director'
(http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/products/DMC250), equivalent to the
Squeezebox Classic, except that it has an integrated amplifier so you
can add speakers and make it into a Squeezebox Boom, for 449.99.

'DMP 100, The Player'
(http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/products/DMP100), equivalent to the
Squeezebox Receiver, for 299.99.

'DMRW 1000, The Controller'
(http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/products/DMRW1000), equivalent to
the Squeezebox Controller, for 349.99

'DMC 350, The Condctor'
(http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/products/DMC350), equivalent to
nothing in the Squeezebox line, in that it is like a Touchscreen Boom
with a built-in CD player, for 699.99

They also offer packages like 'The Premier Bundle'
(http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/products/KWHA700) where you get a
Director, Receiver and Controller for 999.99

While there are certainly differences (Windows only on the backend,
higher priced), to a regular consumer I think they would see the new
Linksys products and the Squeezebox products as direct
competitors...with the added bonus in the Linksys that you can 'dock
your ipod' (http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/products/MCCI40) for
79.99 and then control it like the rest of the system, and (unlike the
Boom's line-in), have it available as a source to any of the zones.

I'm firmly entrenched in the Squeezebox family (and happily so, except
for the Receiver requiring a Controller), but I thought this was
interesting and thought I'd post it here. I'm actually disappointed with
Sound and Vision (something that is happening more and more often)
because in their review they never mentioned Squeezebox...they only
talked about the Linksys products being cheaper alternatives to Sonos.

I don't see such an option. It says Wait behavior. When syncing

the song (Default), wait for the next track to start, or attempt to
sync mid-song. Wait for next track will allow you to press a button

So the default is to sync and restart. I switched it to attempt to
sync mid-song. What actually happened was that the players synched and
the playlist *stopped*. So I don't know if there's a conflict between
The Synchronizer and Sync Options plugins, or between one or both of
those and the latest version of SqueezeCenter or what. I guess I will
experiment some more; I do love the Synchronizer, it is really
providing what I was looking for (getting Sync more accessible in the
menus) and also being able to define the groups is very handy, as we
have Upstairs, Downstairs and Bedroom (or BedBoom as I named it, nyuk
nyuk), and our likely sync combos are to sync all three or to just sync
the upstairs and the bedroom.

I appreciate the discussion here; does anyone else have any thoughts?

[slim] Easier way to sync?

2009-02-23 Thread thing-fish

Thanks to the Circuit City closeout, I now have a third Squeezebox
product in the house. While we're loving it, something that was a
little troublesome before is now a bigger issue: we'd like an easier
way to sync the players together.

My first instinct was just to go into the Menus preference for each
player and get Sync moved higher in the menu hierarchy. We've done the
same thing with Podcasts and Rhapsody, making them just a couple of
keypresses away instead of having to go dig them out of Music Services
or Extras. Alas, Sync is not available to do that with!

So I guess I'm asking, is there a plugin available that will let Sync
be at a higher level in the menu? I am going to install the Sync
Options plugin, as I really love the idea of being able to change sync
mid-song, but I don't know yet if it will do what I'm looking for.

I submitted that as a bug and it's being worked on. It's just a

the plugins with this last upgrade, that reported they were incompatible
not because they actually were, but they had a version check that needed

It might seem silly to some, but if Logitech goes in the direction of

[slim] Where are the last.fm features?

2008-07-21 Thread thing-fish

I don't understand something. I've seen the announcements about new
last.fm functionality in SqueezeCenter and am looking forward to it,
but I can't find it in my system. Ubuntu isn't prompting me to update
from SqueezeCenter Version: 7.0.1 - 19705; is the last.fm stuff in a
newer version? All I see is the last.fm audioscrobbler I've had in
there since the beginning. I was thinking that maybe I'd used a
plug-in (I had used the plug-in scrobbler with Slimserver) but finally
checked my plug-in folder over the weekend and didn't see anything.

What am I doing wrong? Thanks much for any assistance, feeling like a

One note about that: before starting your scan, go into the MusicIP
preferences and set up some exclusions. For instance, I tell it not to
analyze files that contain the word podcast (all my podcasts go into a
folder named /mnt/media/music/podcasts so that catches them all). If
you have lots of audio or spoken word, I would make sure to tell
MusicIP not to analyze them. They'll still be available in the
library, but it won't spend the analysis time. Note you can also
exclude them from mixes.

This is only available in the GUI unfortunately, out of luck if you're
only running linux headless. You can run the GUI to make these
changes, exit, then start the headless server though, if that's a
possibility on your box.

Essentially no, because ' it's patented'

(though that does seem to be more about the fingerprinting than the
analysis). With that said, I've certainly found that with all the
settings at their defaults, if I seed a mix with saxophone-led bebop
jazz, I'm going to get a fair amount of saxophone and a fair amount of
jazz. If I seed using something with a lot of vocal harmonies, much of
the mix will have vocal harmonies. Upbeat seeds generally result in
upbeat mixes. I don't know how it does any of this, but it generally
does it very well. The mixes it comes up with often remind me of my
very favorite FM DJs from my youth, the independent stations where
coming up with a flow was an art form.

technojunkie;309692 Wrote:
I ask because, having tried to finely tune the mix paramaters within SC

Does the validation process flag tracks by genre, style of music,
feel/mood of music or some other method ?

The songs in my library have not been all correctly tagged for genre
but I was expecting the MusicIP validation process to log this
 information.

It definitely seems to be music content-related. Though I have noticed
that if I pick a live recording that's got a lot of crowd noise, the mix
will include other recordings with crowd noise. Usage of the genre tag,
which is not analysis related, is a flag you can set (which restricts
the mix to the genre of the seed).

technojunkie;309692 Wrote:
However if, for example, I select a rock ballad as the seed song, I get
a lot of songs in the mix that are not by rock artists and certainly
not rock ballads or anything similar in style or mood.

Am I expecting too much from MusicIp or do I need to do some more fine
tuning of the mix settings and, if so, which ones ?

It sounds like you want a pretty restrictive mix, so perhaps you should
set the Genre flag to Yes to restrict the genre (then you should only get
Rock in the above example). In addition, increase the number for Style.
The default is 0, which means to ignore the seed style. (Note that
style is undefined). For Variety, what I've found is that with a
variety of 0, you can create a mix from a seed and get 10 tracks, then
immediately create a mix from that same seed and you'll get the exact
same tracks again. But if you have Variety set to a higher number, it
will vary the mix a little each time you seed with the same track.

My default settings are Variety of 2 and style of 20, no genre
restriction. With those settings, if I pick a track by Suzanne Vega
that's just her and her guitar, I will get a mix that is largely (but not
entirely) acoustic-based and will almost exclusively feature female
vocals.

I hope some of this helps! I love MusicIP mixer. I've said it before: I
wouldn't have bought a Squeezebox if it weren't for that program. My
whole family interacts with our music collection almost *exclusively*
through MusicIP mixes.

[slim] Cannot customize the order of Podcasts or RSS

2008-03-07 Thread thing-fish

In SlimServer, I was able to rearrange the order of Podcasts or RSS
feeds. It was a pain: if I found a new RSS feed I wanted to come
first, I had to paste it in the first box, paste what used to be in the
first box into the second, second to third, etc. Same with Podcasts.

While I am enjoying SqueezeCenter (THANK YOU PEOPLE for the local
Rhapsody integration. Not having to go to SqueezeNetwork itself = my
family using Squeezebox more and probably getting a 2nd one, mixing
Rhapsody and local content in the same playlist is GREAT), it is
actually kind of important to me to be able to resequence these and
unless I'm missing something, there's no way to do it at all.

Should I file a bug/feature request or is this post sufficient? Also,
does this get stored in a file or database table somewhere so that I
can change it in the meantime?

thanks much!

Will it require a firmware upgrade or can I get by without doing it?

I have to tell you, I was delighted at how quickly I was able to switch
from SS6.5.4 to SC7.0. I run XUbuntu and just used Synaptic Package
manager, which de-installed SS and installed SC7. It brought in my 19k
tracks from MusicIP in about 45 minutes, and while it was doing that I
upgraded SoftSqueeze on the laptop and got the scrobbler and MusicIP
Mixer settings done. Then I installed the magnificent WeatherTime
plugin like I had on SS and restarted (which finally enabled
mixer-specific MusicIP, that was the one snag because I didn't know I
had to restart, and had to figure out how to restart). Total time, 60

With that said, you certainly don't have anything to lose by putting

everything twice when you put it on your first PC anyway ;) I'm
delighted so far with the new stuff, it definitely solved a couple of

 It's in plugin/podcast.prefs or rssnews.prefs - just make a backup

I will do that too, thank you. But I have a question. What's the
right way to shut down SC? Last night when I was upgrading I saw that
there was a process that seemed to always keep SC running, and a
separate process that was actually SC. When I installed plug-ins I
killed the SC process and then it seemed to automatically restart. To
fully shut it down I assume I kill that restarting script, then kill
the server. But then how do I start it back up!

I could swear that there used to be a .pl in the past where I could
just say slimserver.pl stop or something, but I couldn't find the
equivalent last night. Please note that despite running Squeeze
products on FreeBSD or Xunbutu for like six years now, my skillz are
far from elite ;) Heck, I still don't even have MusicIP autostarting
or Squeeze dependent on it starting first; those rare times when I have
to reboot I have to go start it manually. Now that Squeeze doesn't
appear to have a dynamic plugin load I don't know *what* I'm going to
do with that situation (sharpen my skills, I guess, lol!)

Thanks for your help, Michael, looking forward to your response

There was a period where I had a lot of trouble with Rhapsody and my

dropping out all the time and/or it wasn't authenticating. But I posted
about them here and at least one bug got fixed, and since about mid
December every time I've used it (I don't use it every day but do use
it almost every weekend) it's been OK. So I did have a really awful
rough patch but before and after that time it was OK.

I'm very much looking forward to the official Squeezecenter release

to more directly support the artist or (of course) if it's not

completely happy to rent instead of to own. And for exploring new

see having a music subscription forever. The deeper /

[slim] AppleTV and SlimServer/SqueezeCenter

2008-01-15 Thread thing-fish

Does anyone know if AppleTV will stream internet radio and thus accept
stream.mp3 from SlimServer/SqueezeCenter? I know a lot of audiophiles
talk about having no interest in having video pollute their audio
stuff, but I'm very interested in having the SlimServer ecosystem
available to my home theater. With the announcement of the various
upgrades to AppleTV today at MacWorld, the AppleTV is suddenly very
interesting to me and I wonder if I could leverage my existing software
stack on it.

Anyone know?

*and* internet radio. I wonder if it can specifically play the

specifically tuned to the Logitech/Squeeze ecosystem, but you can get
these Sansas for $100 street. It seems awfully tied to Yahoo though.

 Of course not!
Where do you get all these 'insights'?

Can you lay in bed and hold a laptop in one hand to control your
 playlists?

While I don't hold it in one hand, because I can't afford a second
Squeezebox, a laptop at the bedside running SoftSqueeze is exactly how
I do about 20% of my interaction with my collection. 60% of my
interaction is running SoftSqueeze at work during the day, tapping into
my collection at home. The final 20% is with the actual Squeezebox, and
I'd say we split the remote vs. the laptop about 50/50.

I agree with other posters and even some of the Logitech people that
are posting here: I don't think the remote is a viable, pocketable
mowing-the-lawn, portable device. When the iPod touch gets native wifi
streaming I would consider it over the SBC in a heartbeat, if for no
other reason than when I leave the house I can take the iPod with me
and keep playing it, where I can't do that with the remote. I have a
Treo 680 and use it as my main portable music player; if it had WiFi, I
would be using it this way right this second. But it doesn't, and I
can't afford the monthly fees to get the data plan that would enable
streaming the stream.mp3 or internet radio onto the phone.

Note to Logitech regarding wifi streaming though: several people have
commented that it eats the battery life. Personally, I don't have a
problem with that. As long as a wifi streaming device could get 2
hours streaming, I think it would meet almost every need I have for it,
whether it be working out or mowing the lawn or gardening or whatever.
Again though, I don't think the SBC, even modded to, is going to fit
that bill as it doesn't really seem to be meant to be subjected to a
workout or a garden or whatever.

And again, while I wish it was less than $150, I am interested in the
headless SBR for a second room as a mostly-always-synched-with-my-SB3
device, once it's possible to set it up without the $299 remote.

it's just there - i grab it and its ready to use before my eyes even

100% with you on that. I have used my Nintendo DS Browser to control
the Squeezebox a few times, and it was painful for both of the reasons
you specify there. You run into #3 when you start, but even after
everything is loaded, you run into #1; after it times out you have to
not only get back on the network but then refresh the page!

Note that even though those were dealbreakers for the most part, it WAS
fun to use the DS to control the music. It actually looked good and was
quite operational, but only while it was a live connection.

$399 for the Duet is *more* than the $299 Squeezebox, since the $150

Note that I think the output jack on the remote (once enabled) is

I already have a $299 Squeezebox, so to add one more room I will add

The advantage other services have over MusicIP is that MusicIP is only

Re: [slim] Scanning MusicIP

2007-12-17 Thread thing-fish

I haven't had that specific problem but have certainly had occasional
quirks with MusicIP and Slimserver. Try doing these things, in this
order:

- Make sure that Slimserver is set to use MusicIP in the Server
Settings-Plugins, and that the port is right
- Clear out the Music Folder and Playlists folder in Slimserver's
Settings-Basic Settings
- Close Slimserver
- Make sure that MusicMagic is listing the stuff you expect. Make sure
the API service is turned on.
- Open Slimserver
- Make sure that MusicMagic is listed in your Server Settings (meaning
that SlimServer sees it and is connected to it)
- clear library and rescan. Unfortunately this will take a really
really long time, but you probably already know that.

I hope that helps: ideally that should both help you troubleshoot and
get your library all reset.

I'm no pro, but love the SlimServer/MusicIP combination and have been
running it for a while. The big thing is that MusicMagicMixer has to
have its API service turned on (regardless of whether it's the headless
or GUI version), and it needs to be running before SlimServer starts.

However! At least as a temporary workaround, you can go to the Server
Settings-Plugins page and tell Slimserver to load plugins on the fly
instead of at startup only. Make sure MusicMagic is checked. In the
event that SlimServer loads before MusicMagic, you just navigate to
server settings-plugins after MusicMagic has started, and SlimServer
will start using it again.

For a more permanent fix, I'm assuming you're running on Windows since
you talked about services.msc. I did find a site that describes how to
edit the registry to make one service dependent on another:
http://www.boyce.us/windows/servertipcontent.asp?ID=7. However, I
don't know if slimserver runs as a service on Windows, someone else
will have to jump in on that!

These are great questions, thanks for asking! Note that probably 80%
of my SlimServer use is listening to tracks at work via softsqueeze,
which I've done for years. We have about 18K tracks and recently
bought our first Squeezebox. Here's the most common ways we use the
system:

1 - Search to artist, track or album and then do a MusicIP Mix based on
that thing

2 - Browse New Music to get to the latest additions to the library,
then either play the new disc or do a MusicIP Mix on the new disc. We
also do Browse New Music to find the latest podcasts that a separate
program has downloaded to our library.

2 - Go to the Plugins - Podcast menu to listen to a podcast directly

3 - Streaming Radio in general, whether it be the Internet Radio
section, last.fm, radio.io, Radio Keneally, etc. Also our local public
radio station doesn't come in very well over the antenna, so we listen
to them through their stream almost exclusively now.

4 - Search to album and play the whole album. Once in a while search
to artist, select whole artist and randomize it (my son does that with
Weird Al in particular)

5 - Recently I installed the SQL Playlists and have played with that.
The big thing I did was make a very long query to make a spouse-safe
playlist that only played artists she liked. I would prefer to use
MusicIPs Filters function, but that requires the GUI and I'm running
MusicIP headless on FreeBSD.

Overall I would say that we mostly use intelligent random mixing +
some targeted listening. We have pretty much abandoned true Random
listening, as our collection is too big and too broad to enjoy it that
way. Once in a while I like my Slayer to fade into my Puccini, but not
often. I've had a blast with SQL Playlists (I'm a Data Architect IRL),
but even the spouse-safe, artist-constrained list proved to generally
be too jarring on a track-by-track basis. You did a great job with that
plug-in though; it's a blast.

I've stated in other forums: I used Slimserver before MusicIP, but my
enjoyment of my collection truly peaks with the combination of
Slimserver for delivery and MusicIP for selection. The ultimate for
me will be to have MusiciP/Slimserver mix my own tracks with Rhapsody
tracks. That's nirvana, imo. All the music I've bought plus a
tremendous rental catalog, intelligently mixed. Just got to get
MusicIP to add more of the GUI functionality (namely filters and
exclusions) to the headless version.

The SB will only allow you to enable bridging if it can detect activity

bridging, I would have to boot a game and startup network play, then
try to configure bridging before the game timed out.

A small switch would have probably made things easier and removed the
 need for a cross-over cable.

I really appreciate that response. I just did get a Squeezebox and
tried to use the bridging with an old PS/2 and could not get it to
work. Went and bought the crossover cable and still couldn't get it to
work. I think what you describe above is probably why. Kind of a
bummer, I had hoped it was easier :(

I checked and that's what my current stuff is tagged and I just edited
the album I added to that. I guess a lot of people may use software
that rips to \artist\album\track and have problems with the / which
is not a legal character in a windows directory name. Hmmm do Linux
filesystems struggle with / given it's their directory separator?

Basically I am confused by FreeDB having such ugly options. I will see
what MusicIP thinks if I ask it to repair the tags.

Remember that your tag info and your filename don't have to be the
same. With that said, MusicIP is exactly what I was going to suggest:
it's probably the easiest way to access 'MusicBrainz'
(http://www.musicbrainz.org) for your tags, which is such a vast
improvement over FreeDB that there's no comparison. The coolest thing
about MusicBrainz is that it's user-editable, so if you're a fan and
see something wrong, you have the power to edit it just like a Wiki.

MusicBrainz also offers their own tagger called 'Picard'
(http://wiki.musicbrainz.org/PicardTagger) which, while more difficult
to use than MusicIP, does allow tag-based file naming, and explicitly
allows you to exclude characters, do firstname lastname or lastname,
firstname and that kind of stuff. You can go ahead and rip with EAC
and use FreeBSD or whatever tag and filename information, then let
Picard fix both the tags and the filenames.

So, I use Picard and MusicIP, and on my FreeBSD system I have my files
organized artist/album/track. I have Picard strip out the / for the
filename, so the artist folder is actually named ACDC but the tags
are AC/DC

their API and headless operations, and would like to see the Slim and
MusicIP products have better integration in general, my family
essentially doesn't play music through the Squeezebox unless it's
courtesy of a MusicIP mix. That's not to say that I don't listen to

the TV out DOES open a world of possibilities for visualisation and
 general prettiness not currently available...

...we've just added a streaming video player and while it's not without

basically, all our media comes from various sources (video cam,

I want to second what you're saying about the TV out. I would love to
have visualizations. As cheesy as they are to many, we've found for
parties and such that plugging our media center PC into the TV with the
Winamp or WMP visualizations, or doing the folder of digital photos +
music slideshow, is a huge hit. Would be neat to do that from the
Squeezebox. But you're right: also very important to NOT need an
auxiliary display for regular functionality!

Reading through this thread, I don't think the idea of a fat client is
necessarily bad. I like the idea of having a component in my home
theater that has plays local storage and ports for additional
/temporary storage, can access shared drives on other PCs, will play
audio and video, and ALSO act as a server to thin clients throughout
the house in the form of current or stripped down/cheaper squeezeboxen.
I think that sounds pretty fine! And more mass marketable than the
current config.

It'd be like the DLink medialounge except extendable!

You could achieve this with SlimServer's built-in support of the

http://www.musicip.com/mixer/index.jsp lets you set up filters, and
then through the SlimServer interface you can assign a specific filter
to a specific Squeezebox. I don't know is whether it would prevent the

Let me introduce myself. My name is Junien Labrousse, Logitech SVP of

Greetings! Let me introduce myself: I've been a user of the SlimServer
software for several years, loving it so much that I built a computer
just to house my music library and SlimServer installation, researching
and learning open-source operating system s (I chose FreeBSD) to do so.

However, I've never been able to afford a Squeezebox. I use the
software every day (in conjunction with the MusicMagicMixer after
ripping my CDs with EAC and tagging them with the MusicBrainz tagger),
streaming music from my home to my desktop at work. At home I have
softsqueeze installed on the family laptops and they use it. So, while
I absolutely hope you can continue to maintain and even improve the
audiophile aspects of the current Slim Devices products, I've always
hoped that there would be a low-cost alternative so that it could be
more easily adopted by more typical, non-audiophile consumers (of
course while still sounding great). I guess I just want you to hear
from a customer who has been waiting in the wings for a lower cost
product. I'm willing to sacrifice features of the current device so I
can more readily get networked audio into multiple rooms of my house.
Personally, I would sacrifice the built-in display and the digital
outs. For display, just give me an S-Video, or even composite video,
and I'll hook it into my existing home theater.

Again, don't take the display and the high-end D/A converters away from
the people that want them! Just hit me with a $100 product without
them. :) In the meantime, I'm a very delighted SlimServer user.

[slim] Artist or album name is truncated w/extended character

2006-09-11 Thread thing-fish

You know the artist Bjork? Except that the o in her name has an umlat
over it (Björk)? Well, via the Musicbrainz/Picard tagger I have the tag
with the umlatted o. WMP, MusicMagicMixer and Winamp all display the
tags fine. But SlimServer truncates the artist name to Bj.
Similarly she has an album called Medúlla that has an extended
character, and Slimserver lists it as Med, again even as

Is there a setting or something I need to toggle to get this type of
extended ASCII character to show correctly? Picard is using ID3v2.3.0.
What REALLY has me baffled is that there are some tracks for this
artist, and even the Medulla album, that display OK in Slimserver, even
as others have the truncation described above!

So, any recommendations for the characterset or other settings I should
be using for tagging and/or Slimserver? Any help is appreciated. Note
that I did test to see if MusicMagicMixer was the problem by disabling
the plugin and doing a complete truncate/refresh of my music library
using the path instead of MM. Same problem. :(

YES. The filenames are coming right out of the tag names. I didn't

Note that I was thinking I had to do something about the filenames

wanted to just use the ports collection to upgrade.

So with the disclaimer that I haven't seen 6.5 (so this feature could
already be in it), what I want is simple: I want to be able to
reorder/delete songs in the playlist the same way that I can
reorder/delete DVDs in my Netflix queue.

For those of you that haven't seen it, imagine an ordered list where
the numeric position is an editable text box. If I have ten items and
want to move the 10th to the 1st position and the 8th to the second
position, I just type 1 and 2 in the appropriate boxes and click
update. If you want to delete there's a checkbox on the line. If you
entered the same number in multiple boxes it gracefully handles those
ties that you may have inadvertently created.

Instead of laboriously moving tracks one at a time it would allow for
very quick and easy playlist editing. I would so utterly love this
feature.
