It's a real shame that the Empirical Audio Off Ramp 5 uses the HiFace (1) chipset for USB audio input, which is no good for Linux, as this would be pretty much perfect otherwise as it also offers LVDS I2S output which is really hard to find on other interfaces. This apparently will change in upcoming versions of the Off Ramp. I saw in another thread here (the EDO one maybe?) that there is a driver available for the HiFace 1 on Linux now and somebody compiled it for the Touch. If that's the case then this could possibly work on the Off-Ramp and other interfaces/DACs using that chipset. Re: [slim] Logitech SqueezeBox replacement for under $30
I'm not planning to dump my Squeezeboxen anytime soon. Probably not until the hardware starts to die, and I hope (and pretty much expect) that won't be for many years. As long as I still have a version of LMS that works, the devices I have are just fine. But if the time comes that I have to abandon the SB hardware, whatever new system I go with will have to be able to sync devices, reliably, without fail. That's crucial. I have a large house, with (currently) 8 SBs (Duets, Touches, Booms and Radios) covering 3 floors plus the deck and patio, and I can't imagine having a party with people in the living room, kitchen, family room, patio and deck, and not being able to have the music on in all those places. If they're not in sync, it would sound like hell, and even worse if they're stuttering and pausing to resync. Even ignoring the party/socializing aspect, on weekends I routinely have music on all through the house. To me, sync is absolutely critical. There's no such thing as close enough; sync is either perfect or it isn't sync. And I can't imagine any system achieving SB-quality synchronization without specialized hardware married to custom firmware. I don't see how the timing/buffering issue can be reliably handled unless the latencies are known and predictable, and using a collection of PC-based soundcards doesn't look like the way to handle that. Built my vortexbox last night. Worked great. Only snag I hit was when I put the USB mem chip in and rebooted - I couldn't connect as root. I thought something screwed up with the USB imager so I re-imaged. When I got the same result the second time I woke up to the fact that I was being shown a security message... I had to go into known_hosts and nuke the existing entry for the vortex box, since the new OS (on the flash drive) gave the box a new SSH ID. After nuking the entry in known-hosts I connected as root and was golden. OK, I just followed the excellent step-by-step directions from the Vortexbox.org site and got the VAMP up and running in about 20 minutes. I am about the least Linux-knowledgeable person in the world so if I can do it, anyone can. I'm using a Turtle Beach USB DAC for now and it sounds pretty great for a total investment of around $50. I'm controlling it using the free Logitech Squeezebox iPhone app. Next up is to download iPeng and to order an AudioQuest Dragonfly USB DAC to see if it sounds better than the Turtle Beach. So, as long as you are willing to control from a smartphone app or via the web, this works great and will replace one of my Squeezeboxes that suddenly died. A recommended project and thank you Vortexbox folks for doing this. dyohn's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5211 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=97721 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Logitech SqueezeBox replacement for under $30
Got the Pogoplug today that I ordered from the Vortexbox store (unfortunately prior to the latest addition) and it seems to really be a P21. The label on the foot says P21 and the cat /proc/cpuinfo says: Processor : ARMv6-compatible processor rev 5 (v6l) processor : 0 BogoMIPS: 279.34 processor : 1 BogoMIPS: 279.34 Features: swp half thumb fastmult edsp java CPU implementer : 0x41 CPU architecture: 7 CPU variant : 0x0 CPU part: 0xb02 CPU revision: 5 Hardware: Oxsemi NAS Revision: Serial : From what I can tell from Archlinux, I think this is a P21, not an E02. Great. I'll find out in a few days. Went for the PogoPlug and HA-info U2 to start with, since my DAC can only handle 48kHz over its USB connection even though it's a 96kHz DAC. There's a fundamental difference between usb audio and hardware players with tuned device drivers - that is what current delay does alsa report for the device. In the case of the hardware players I believe its well tuned and accurate as Logitech could focus on tuning their own device drivers. In the case of usb-audio it depends on the version of alsa (more recent alsa kernel drivers have more code in this area, but I've not tested) + any buffering in the device which linux will know nothing about. The recent usb-audio code appears to think it knows when the latency is less than 2m and will log otherwise, but I would want to try multiple versions and also there will be an uncertainty due to the device which must do some level of buffering. paulster wrote: The hardware players have a resync mechanism built in, and so it would be interesting to know whether the software player also has this. The resync mechanism is in the server and the player software. I'd expect SqueezeLite to support that, SqueezePlay definitely does. However, this is not the problem at hand here. To work correctly, the resync mechanism relies on an exact information about when a certain sample is to be played. Whether that information is available depends on the audio hardware and the driver architecture. There are two things that can go wrong: 1. There's a constant delay, e.g. because there is a queue to be filled in the audio processing or a constant buffer. This can be compensated by adjusting the delay setting for that player on the server side. 2. (more likely): The audio driver uses a variable buffer and the only information you get is when you fill that buffer. However, the delay between sending a sample to the buffer and actually playing it depends on the size and also the fullness of that buffer so if there's a large (e.g. 1/2 s) buffer and the level to which it fills varies a lot, then you will get very inaccurate timing. A typical reason for something like this is because you want to make sure the playback works without stuttering even though you don't have a real-time thread feeding the audio or because performance is low and time slices are long. I would expect to see more of this on lower powered systems as well as on ones (like Windows) that are not designed for real-time operation. Symptoms in the case of issue #2 would not be a drift but rather an alternating offset between the two sources and a lot of dropped frames due to re-syncing. If it gets too bad the server can bail out completely and stop the resync. pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=97721 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Anyone have an idea where to get a 2 hour crashcourse in (Arch) Linux (For those occasions when all you have is a SSH terminal, and a great plan to spent those late hours) I feel like an absolute newbie...as if it where the day back in 1985 when as a 7year old I got my hands on my very own Sharp MZ-721 for the first time, completely clueless but oh so intrigued by the blinking cursor. I wrote a 'howto on installing squeezeplug/debian on the pogoplug pro' (http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=661878postcount=619). You should read from there all the way to post 655 before doing anything. If you're not comfortable with linux then spending $20 for a normal pogoplug, might be the better option. Note that I've never gotten USB audio to work on the pogoplug pro, but it does make a fairly good low powered LMS server with it's 2 CPUs. If you decide to proceed, please post in the squeezeplug thread, not here. ralphy's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3484 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=97721 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Logitech SqueezeBox replacement for under $30
Look Ma, no echo. I've played with the RT kernel described above. SBS and squeezelite are running at normal prio (batch scheduling in RT parlance) and squeezelite is reniced -5, so it comes on top of SBS, but not enough to lock itself up. (Sox and flac are reniced +15 when they run, so they stay below both SBS and squeezelite.) Squeezelite runs with option -a 8:4, I've tried 5:4 but I suspect it creates audible artefacts. The only option I have in snd-usb-audio is aync_unlink=1. Option nrpacks=something-big-or-small is decidedly not my friend. On the IRQ front, the timer has highest RT prio, then ohci_hcd (ie usb2) and I demoted some others. Esp. usb1, aka ehci_hcd. I synched 3 players : - squeezelite: alix+cmedia dongle+aux minijack input to a rotel RA-5 amp - SB3: optical out+V-Dac mk 1+CD inputs to the same amp - SB3: analog out+scandyna SE active speakers (this is my makeshift Boom) The 2 sources are in the same room. The rotel amp has a remote, I can switch input with the flick of a finger. I am unable to make a difference between squeezelite and the SB3 connected to the rotel amp. Sync is just too good. I took issue from the fact the output level between both sources on the amp was not the same (and the V-Dac is better than the C-Media thing :) ), so changing source was making too much difference. After lowering the output level on the SB3, I frankly can't say anymore if squeezelite or the SB3 is playing along with the other SB3. Of course there are some behavioral differences between both kinds of players (SB3 stops to resync, squeezelite seems to stop less / SB3 is immune to CPU load peaks, squeezelite not / crossfade seems a bit different) so you can spot the software player from time to time. My goal is to run SBS+sox+squeezelite on the Alix, and play up to 24/96 audio synched to SB3s, but I am afraid I'm pushing the envelope, here. Putting some extra load on the CPU, like browsing the library while transcoding, SB3s are liable to stop to rebuffer but squeezelite not as much, so the SB3s keep rebuffering while squeezelite plays alone, and finally the SB3s can give up. Stopping all players and restarting one reforms the sync group ok. So, I think finally that an Alix with a good usb2 Dac + squeezelite + RT-Linux can make a truly synchable player. If you're looking for a player/server combo that could transcode for SBs, then there is not enough CPU on the Alix, a more modern platform is needed. No, he didn't. He said it was good but not perfect compared to the Logitech hardware. But he didn't say whether he'd tried tweaking the latency for this player to get it perfect and whether it would then drift, and also said nothing about whether two or more VAMPs will retain perfect sync between them. The hardware players have a resync mechanism built in, and so it would be interesting to know whether the software player also has this. paulster's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=23073 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=97721 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Can't match $30, but another alternative is the CuBox: http://www.solid-run.com/products/cubox I got one this morning and the sock firmware will run squeezelite and supports usb audio and async hifi dacs. It's about 3 times the price of the Pi, but its doing what I envisaged Squeezelite could do on an arm like device. Plus there's an hdmi display and ir port which could be made to do something useful too... Anyway if anyone wants an alternative to the SBT with async usb support which supports mmap alsa (which gets the best our of squeezelite) then this looks an option for a roll your own squeezelite box. As with the Pi its really targeted at developers rather than end users so is really only showing what a diy solution could give. Note for people who followed EDO on the SBT forum: it needs an external high speed hub if you have an async usb audio class 1 dac.
