You can download the armv5te binary directly from the squeezelite
download page using wget

wget http://squeezelite.googlecode.com/files/squeezelite-armv5te

You might need to change the permissions to executable as well.

chmod 755 squeezelite-armv5te

Stop the old running squeezelite on the vamp and test to see if the new
version works for you before replacing the original binary.

Something like

./squeezelite-armv5te -d all=debug

I want to thank agillis and anyone else involved in getting this
solution going.

I have successfully built it and it's a perfect add-on solution if you
primarily use ipeng for your remote.

I don't know if it's been covered in previous posts in this thread but
when using the vamp build instructions with a mac based system there are
extra steps to make it all work.

here's a link to a macosx hint page with the key extra step.

It's a real shame that the Empirical Audio Off Ramp 5 uses the HiFace
 (1) chipset for USB audio input, which is no good for Linux, as this
would be pretty much perfect otherwise as it also offers LVDS I2S output
which is really hard to find on other interfaces.

This apparently will change in upcoming versions of the Off Ramp. Steve
has said at some point he will implement Linux capability

I saw in another thread here (the EDO one maybe?) that there is a driver

If that's the case then this could possibly work on the Off-Ramp and
other interfaces/DACs using that chipset. That would be good news.

This one is pretty good for a non-async interface. It's a shame though
that because it uses the Tenor chipset it lacks 88.2kHz support.

The M2Tech HiFace 2 is probably the next best step up from this before

Re: [slim] Logitech SqueezeBox replacement for under $30

2013-02-18 Thread Dogberry2

I'm not planning to dump my Squeezeboxen anytime soon. Probably not
until the hardware starts to die, and I hope (and pretty much expect)
that won't be for many years. As long as I still have a version of LMS
that works, the devices I have are just fine. But if the time comes that
I have to abandon the SB hardware, whatever new system I go with will
have to be able to sync devices, reliably, without fail. That's crucial.

I have a large house, with (currently) 8 SBs (Duets, Touches, Booms and
Radios) covering 3 floors plus the deck and patio, and I can't imagine
having a party with people in the living room, kitchen, family room,
patio and deck, and not being able to have the music on in all those
places. If they're not in sync, it would sound like hell, and even worse
if they're stuttering and pausing to resync. Even ignoring the
party/socializing aspect, on weekends I routinely have music on all
through the house. To me, sync is absolutely critical. There's no such
thing as close enough; sync is either perfect or it isn't sync. And I
can't imagine any system achieving SB-quality synchronization without
specialized hardware married to custom firmware. I don't see how the
timing/buffering issue can be reliably handled unless the latencies are
known and predictable, and using a collection of PC-based soundcards
doesn't look like the way to handle that.

Re: [slim] Logitech SqueezeBox replacement for under $30

2013-02-18 Thread SamS

Love reading about this project!

I'm all for cheap, but has there been any consideration given to
maximize digital audio output from a device like this? Better PSU, or
other hardware? Even if it cost 2X+ what you've got going on here... I
would be interested if it's possible to replicate the high quality
digital output that we get from the Transporter or Touch.

Use a good quality USB DAC and you have it. :)

Re: [slim] Logitech SqueezeBox replacement for under $30

2013-02-17 Thread dwc

Built my vortexbox last night. Worked great. Only snag I hit was when I
put the USB mem chip in and rebooted - I couldn't connect as root. I
thought something screwed up with the USB imager so I re-imaged. When I
got the same result the second time I woke up to the fact that I was
being shown a security message... I had to go into known_hosts and nuke
the existing entry for the vortex box, since the new OS (on the flash
drive) gave the box a new SSH ID. After nuking the entry in known-hosts
I connected as root and was golden.

Thanks again!

2013-01-22 Thread dyohn

OK, I just followed the excellent step-by-step directions from the
Vortexbox.org site and got the VAMP up and running in about 20 minutes.
I am about the least Linux-knowledgeable person in the world so if I can
do it, anyone can. I'm using a Turtle Beach USB DAC for now and it
sounds pretty great for a total investment of around $50. I'm
controlling it using the free Logitech Squeezebox iPhone app. Next up
is to download iPeng and to order an AudioQuest Dragonfly USB DAC to see
if it sounds better than the Turtle Beach. So, as long as you are
willing to control from a smartphone app or via the web, this works
great and will replace one of my Squeezeboxes that suddenly died. A
recommended project and thank you Vortexbox folks for doing this.

Re: [slim] Logitech SqueezeBox replacement for under $30

2013-01-21 Thread mikeh49

Got the Pogoplug today that I ordered from the Vortexbox store
(unfortunately prior to the latest addition) and it seems to really be a
P21. The label on the foot says P21 and the cat /proc/cpuinfo says:

Processor : ARMv6-compatible processor rev 5 (v6l)
processor : 0
BogoMIPS: 279.34

processor : 1
BogoMIPS: 279.34

Features: swp half thumb fastmult edsp java
CPU implementer : 0x41
CPU architecture: 7
CPU variant : 0x0
CPU part: 0xb02
CPU revision: 5

Hardware: Oxsemi NAS
Revision:
Serial :

From what I can tell from Archlinux, I think this is a P21, not an E02.
Can anyone confirm?

Thanks.

Awesome. I am trying to install LMS on the same unit as I type this. But
I may not need it, since I have it running on my laptop all the time.

I bought 25 feet of CAT 6 cable today to run it to where I have the
plug. With wi-fi I may be able to skip that.

Went to Wal-Mart today to get the USB Logitech speakers, but they only
carry the regular analog kind in the stores. Will have to have them ship
the speakers to the store.

Thanks again for the great work!

Squeezelite (the player VAMP is based on) will not access any hardware
specific volume controls. It does support digital domain volume control
using the standard LMS controls. It may be that you can access the
hardware volume from linux, but this will require you to find a way of
controlling it which would be outside of what squeezelite does.

Did you install an mp3 codec? Squeezelite windows zip does not include
libmad.dll or libmpg123.dll. If you use local player plugin then it
does install one, otherwise easiest it to extract from the mpg123

Okay, let's play who failed to RTFM today! I can confirm that

So it's all back to looking good for my use case scenario again.

Great. I'll find out in a few days. Went for the PogoPlug and HA-info
U2 to start with, since my DAC can only handle 48kHz over its USB
connection even though it's a 96kHz DAC. Then I can look at a better
SPDIF interface or a different USB DAC in future.

Does this box suffer the async problems that the Pi does, requiring a
USB hub for decent asyncronous DACs or is it happy with them direct?

I wouldn't say it is drifting, it's more like I can't get both to align

Yesterday I compiled a linux kernel with real-time extensions. This

too), and a high priority SBS means using the web GUI interrupts music…

So I'm just starting to find out if this setup can perform better than
my non-RT one (which works well, as said above.)

My kernel is compiled with rt-preempt, 1000Hz tick (tickless disabled),
no power management. Uname: Linux prades 2.6.33.7.2-rt30rt-1khz-nopm #1

The audio card is a cheap C-media dongle, this one has usb2 when my
regular V-Dac mk 1 doesn't.
I invoke squeezelite as this: chrt -f 65 /usr/local/bin/squeezelite-pa
-n Prades -b 16384:16384 -o front:CARD=default,DEV=0 -a 10:4 -z
172.17.255.87 (I think you can disregard the -b option, and I'd like to
try -a 5:4 next and see if the system can follow.)
I am synching an SB3 and the alix, in the same room. The sources are
about 5 m apart.

Right now I need to recover from the last crash ;) and continue testing
on highly syncopated music, but I am almost certain this setup cannot
work the same as the hw players.
It's getting very, very close, mind you. The value of Triode's
contribution is exceptional.
But I'm ready to admit we were not giving good people good money for

There's a fundamental difference between usb audio and hardware players
with tuned device drivers - that is what current delay does alsa report
for the device. In the case of the hardware players I believe its well
tuned and accurate as Logitech could focus on tuning their own device
drivers. In the case of usb-audio it depends on the version of alsa
(more recent alsa kernel drivers have more code in this area, but I've
not tested) + any buffering in the device which linux will know nothing
about. The recent usb-audio code appears to think it knows when the
latency is less than 2m and will log otherwise, but I would want to try
multiple versions and also there will be an uncertainty due to the
device which must do some level of buffering.

paulster wrote:

The resync mechanism is in the server and the player software. I'd
expect SqueezeLite to support that, SqueezePlay definitely does.

However, this is not the problem at hand here.
To work correctly, the resync mechanism relies on an exact information
about when a certain sample is to be played. Whether that information is
available depends on the audio hardware and the driver architecture.
There are two things that can go wrong:
1. There's a constant delay, e.g. because there is a queue to be filled
in the audio processing or a constant buffer. This can be compensated by
adjusting the delay setting for that player on the server side.
2. (more likely): The audio driver uses a variable buffer and the only
information you get is when you fill that buffer. However, the delay
between sending a sample to the buffer and actually playing it depends
on the size and also the fullness of that buffer so if there's a large
(e.g. 1/2 s) buffer and the level to which it fills varies a lot, then
you will get very inaccurate timing. A typical reason for something like
this is because you want to make sure the playback works without
stuttering even though you don't have a real-time thread feeding the
audio or because performance is low and time slices are long. I would
expect to see more of this on lower powered systems as well as on ones
(like Windows) that are not designed for real-time operation.

Symptoms in the case of issue #2 would not be a drift but rather an
alternating offset between the two sources and a lot of dropped frames
due to re-syncing. If it gets too bad the server can bail out completely
and stop the resync.

Re: [slim] Logitech SqueezeBox replacement for under $30

2013-01-12 Thread epoch1970

Look Ma, no echo.

I've played with the RT kernel described above. SBS and squeezelite are
running at normal prio (batch scheduling in RT parlance) and squeezelite
is reniced -5, so it comes on top of SBS, but not enough to lock itself
up. (Sox and flac are reniced +15 when they run, so they stay below both
SBS and squeezelite.)
Squeezelite runs with option -a 8:4, I've tried 5:4 but I suspect it
creates audible artefacts. The only option I have in snd-usb-audio is
aync_unlink=1. Option nrpacks=something-big-or-small is decidedly not
my friend.
On the IRQ front, the timer has highest RT prio, then ohci_hcd (ie usb2)
and I demoted some others. Esp. usb1, aka ehci_hcd.

I synched 3 players :
- squeezelite: alix+cmedia dongle+aux minijack input to a rotel RA-5
amp
- SB3: optical out+V-Dac mk 1+CD inputs to the same amp
- SB3: analog out+scandyna SE active speakers (this is my makeshift
Boom)

The 2 sources are in the same room. The rotel amp has a remote, I can
switch input with the flick of a finger.

I am unable to make a difference between squeezelite and the SB3
connected to the rotel amp. Sync is just too good.
I took issue from the fact the output level between both sources on the
amp was not the same (and the V-Dac is better than the C-Media thing :)
), so changing source was making too much difference.
After lowering the output level on the SB3, I frankly can't say anymore
if squeezelite or the SB3 is playing along with the other SB3.

Of course there are some behavioral differences between both kinds of
players (SB3 stops to resync, squeezelite seems to stop less / SB3 is
immune to CPU load peaks, squeezelite not / crossfade seems a bit
different) so you can spot the software player from time to time.
My goal is to run SBS+sox+squeezelite on the Alix, and play up to 24/96
audio synched to SB3s, but I am afraid I'm pushing the envelope, here.
Putting some extra load on the CPU, like browsing the library while
transcoding, SB3s are liable to stop to rebuffer but squeezelite not as
much, so the SB3s keep rebuffering while squeezelite plays alone, and
finally the SB3s can give up. Stopping all players and restarting one
reforms the sync group ok.

So, I think finally that an Alix with a good usb2 Dac + squeezelite +
RT-Linux can make a truly synchable player. If you're looking for a
player/server combo that could transcode for SBs, then there is not
enough CPU on the Alix, a more modern platform is needed.

Top of the world, Triode.

Squeezelite implements the resync mechanism. The variation between
hardware means there is more variability between the delay the hardware
reports to the software. I've not looked at doing any tuning in this

Not necessarily - the problem is the accuracy of the hardware reporting
latency. Don't discount it though - I'm not saying its inaccurate, just

Is VAMP compatible with those devices ?

Alternatively I may jump on the Raspberry Pi train, and hope the USB

with 4GB SD card and black/white/transparent case and powersupply is
available here in NL for € 66.

If I leave out the case, and make a nice wooden case out of a cigar box

Installing Squeezelite on top of XBMC or OpenElec should not be too

Sync seems pretty decent with my Boom and Transporter :-)

How good is pretty decent? As good as the sync between your Boom and
Transporter? In my experience even a slight sync problem can make sync
unusable.

One other interesting feature of this device is that it has optical

No, there's a hell of a lot more than that needed to make this an actual
replacement for the Squeezebox.

- wifi
- display
- infrared receiver and remote control
- internal DAC
- analog out
- optical S/PDIF out
- coax S/PDIF out

This is a DIY project at best.

Unfortunately that method doesn't work with my dac - setting
dwc_otg.speed=1 means it can't connect. For those dacs using less of

resolve the packet loss issue as without doing so its not really
appropriate for hifi dacs (my target)

Yes - the Pi -should- be a really good solution. Currently, I'm using
HDMI output using the onboard sound card, and it doesn't have any of the
poor sound quality issues of the onboard dac, but does seem to be
limited to 48K max output. As Triode says, USB Dacs do seem to have
some basic packet loss issues at the moment - hopefully they'll fix
them.

I already have a unit here with

- WiFi
- DAC
- analog out
- optical S/PDIF out
- coax S/PDIF out

The total cost is still way under $100. I also have one with a built in
amp and speakers. (boom replacement) I'll be discussing these in future
articles. The only two things I don't have is

- Display
- Infrared receiver and remote control

It would be easy to add both of these to the project but it would add
anther $130 to the cost!! Since an iPod touch v4 is only $199 why would
we want a display or remote?

I guess when I say SqueezeBox replacement I'm replacing the SqueezeBox
Receiver not the Touch.

Re: [slim] Logitech SqueezeBox replacement for under $30

2013-01-04 Thread maggior

With the prevelance of iPods, iPhones, and Andriod devices, I think it's
reasonable to put forth a squeezebox replacement without a display and
rely on another device for the display/control. It seems to be working
well for Sonos.

The the big issue to solve is configuration - how do you make that not a
completely geeky endeavour without the problems that the duet had.

Well that’s not to hard use an on-board web-UI or an helper app running
on your computer or why not both like my ethernet to ir adapter and
ethernet to serial com adapter (itach) .

Re: [slim] Logitech SqueezeBox replacement for under $30

2013-01-04 Thread MarcelG

I just wanted to shout out that I think this is a fantastic initiative
to keep the Squeezebox ecosystem alive.
The Raspberry Pi already drew my attention but I read that is has some
nasty audio quality flukes (in the current Model B version at least),
but the pogoplug in combination with a decent USB DAC sounds like a VERY
viable plan!

Too bad the Pogoplug is so expensive in the Netherlands.

Triode and Agillis : keep up the great work!!!

BTW ; if the Squeezelite package is picked up by the masses using the
pogoplugs, raspberry pi's etc, it might just become the audio equivalent
of XBMC. And that means a GREAT future for the Squeezebox ecosystem!

I guess when I say SqueezeBox replacement I'm replacing the SqueezeBox

Both IR and display is important to be able to replace my Classic or
Touch, the issue is that I currently control them with a Harmony IR
remote. The display is easy to solve, I can just place a iPod Touch or
Android device in a docking station beside it with one of the available
apps always running, it's the IR support which is going to cause me a
head ache.

In similar fashion the on device controls and displays is really
important to be able to replace any of my Squeezebox Radio's.

So as you suggest we are probably talking about a Squeezebox Receiver
replacement/alternative rather than a generic Squeezebox replacement,
but it's definitely good to have an alternative even if it isn't the
perfect replacement of all Squeezebox models, so keep up the good work.

To reach the masses, you need to put it on the shelves in the local
warehouses worldwide, doing that is going to be a completely different
challenge and I believe it's also going to require a bit less geeky
physical design than what we have seen on the alternatives so far, after
all it's a device which non geeks must be willing to place in the center
of their living room. Reaching the masses isn't impossible but I think a
more realistic goal is to reach a lot of geeks and DIY wannabes on this
forum.

Running a Pi with truehl's Squeezeplug for LMS and Triode's Squeezelite
via Mini Boombox - sounds great to me - no audio issues. Controllable

Re: [slim] Logitech SqueezeBox replacement for under $30

2013-01-03 Thread Triode

Can't match $30, but another alternative is the CuBox:
http://www.solid-run.com/products/cubox

I got one this morning and the sock firmware will run squeezelite and
supports usb audio and async hifi dacs. It's about 3 times the price of
the Pi, but its doing what I envisaged Squeezelite could do on an arm
like device. Plus there's an hdmi display and ir port which could be
made to do something useful too...

Anyway if anyone wants an alternative to the SBT with async usb support
which supports mmap alsa (which gets the best our of squeezelite) then
this looks an option for a roll your own squeezelite box. As with the
Pi its really targeted at developers rather than end users so is really
only showing what a diy solution could give.

Note for people who followed EDO on the SBT forum: it needs an external
high speed hub if you have an async usb audio class 1 dac. [looks like
the missing silicon in the Pi is common on embedded arms - they don't
support full speed async dacs correctly without a hub]

An alternative is cubieboard ( http://www.cubieboard.org and can bought
from here
http://www.aliexpress.com/store/all-wholesale-products/511685.html ) but
unlike cubox no nice enclosure but much cheaper US$49 and has 1Gb RAM
and a SATA disk interface.

I got one before Christmas but haven't had much time to play around with
it except to install Linaro. Unfortunately the development community is
very small so porting Raspberry Pi solutions to ARM/Linux issuesseems to
be common.

Cubieboard is based on Allwinner A10 chip which means any software
working on cubieboard will also run on the nicer packed A10 based
product such as
