Pre-n and MIMO are pretty good though. You would probably get higher
throughput and longer range than with a standard "g" router.

But you're paying more, and there's no guarantee it will be compatible
with 802.11n when it's released.

I'm pretty sure it was the version I have, RP614v1. From an end user's
perspective, it was a very good router. Never had an issue with it,
even if it did DoS Rutgers University ;-) but there was a firmware fix
for that.

The v1 is long gone anyway, it didn't have an SPI firewall. The new
versions do.

I've heard a lot of mentions of that router, it seems to be extremely
common/popular in wired installations.

Good point - in fact while the very wireless router chobbney asked
about could be fast with very good range, it uses a "pre n" standard
based on the 802.11n wireless networking draft standard. As with all
"pre n" products, the draft could change sometime between now and next
year when the standard is scheduled to be ratified. If it does change,
you'd better hope the hardware is capable of the new standard, needing
only a firmware change, or else this pre-n router may not fully work
with true-n equipment.

There are advantages to either approach. All-wired will definitely be
cheaper and the router won't turn obsolete so quickly. The wired
router market is rather static at this point. However chobbney, you
may find some good deals on 802.11g wireless routers, provided you
accept the fact that the wireless section may be obsolete before you
turn it on. It's safe to say though that it won't be useless - 802.11g
is now very common and you can safely expect new equipment will work
with it for some years, although not as fast as the new 802.11n stuff
coming. Of course, the true 802.11n equipment will probably be quite
expensive at release time. And keep in mind the Squeezebox's needs are
easily met by the current 802.11g - all the "n" equipment may do is
increase the range.

chobbney - if this is all Greek to you, see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/802.11g which has a nice chart near the
beginning which summarizes speeds and ranges before the article gets
very technical.

FWIW, I have an NTL cable modem and use a Linksys BEFSR41, which is a
simple (wired-only) router that works fine.

If you see no reason why you'd want wireless in the near future, I'd
hold off getting a wireless router, until whatever supercedes 11g gets
ratified. You can always add a wireless access point in the future when
the time comes.

On the other hand, if you know you'll want wireless fairly soon, then a
wireless router is *much* cheaper than a wired router + separate access
point.

Looking at Netgear, I can get something like the following:
Netgear RP614 4 Port Cable Router - £28

or the Netgear WPN824 Pre-N MIMO 108Mbps Router - £64

I guess it does make sense to get a wireless router and not enable the

Actually I just saw ceejay's post so it looks like I'm on the right
lines.

Thanks very much for the help, guys. It's much appreciated.

I've got the same behaviour here since firmware 72 for the SB3.
Very often the display is stuttering which means that the SB3 does have

the problem seems to stay away.

Question: is it possible to use firmware 64 from the original 6.5.0

Not really, that's a switch.

Get a router. Wired ones are dirt cheap these days - if you look
around hard enough you can find one free after rebate.

I have one I'm not using (Netgear RP614v1) but I doubt you live near me
as I have never heard of NTL as a cable provider. Plus shipping costs
would likely be more than you'd find one at any local computer shop.

2007-01-15 Thread chobbney

I just got home and looked again at the cable modem. The other port
isn't an ethernet port - it's a USB port. Sorry about that - I don't
know what I was thinking. The cable modem is an NTL E08C007 so -
judging by the comments above - I'll need a router.

I have no need to go wireless (at the moment) and having a wire to the
Squeezebox will be fine, so would something like this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Netgear-8-Port-Ethernet-Unmanaged-Switch/dp/B87H94/sr=1-2/qid=1168886663/ref=sr_1_2/202-3642568-8379805?ie=UTF8&s=electronics
work fine? It looks like I wouldn't need to configure it.

Sorry for wasting everyone's time, by the way.

Fair enough. I realise that plenty of people (presumably the majority)
have no problems with wireless. But reading these forums reveals that
the overwhelming majority of connection problems are down to using
wireless networking. It just strikes me that if you have the option of
using wired, you may as well eliminate the potential problems that
wireless might cause.

Re. the unsightly cables: fair point, although I might respond by
mentioning out that a Squeezebox already has three wires coming out of
it (power plus a pair of RCAs), so one more doesn't seem like such a
big deal.

But to get back to the original issue: I'm genuinely interested if NTL
are now supplying cable modems with more than one ethernet port. So if
chobbney can confirm one way or the other, that would be great.

My NTL cable modem has just one ethernet port (and one USB port, which
I don't use). Mind you, mine is an old ntlhome:120 (Ambit) modem. I
seriously doubt that more recent NTL modems have a router built-in, in
which case I think you're mistaken about these "unused ethernet
sockets". If you are sure there are some more ethernet ports on the
modem, please let us know what model of modem you have. Assuming there
aren't any extra ports, then you'll need to get a router.

(Incidentally, your posting implies that it will be feasible to use
your SB3 via wired ethernet. If that is the case, don't even *think*
about using it wirelessly).

If the power supply is OK, try a hard reset.

You'll need your WEP or WPA keys to set up again after the reset.
Reset by disconnecting power, press and hold add/+ on the remote, and
reapply power to the SB3.

[slim] Re: Squeezebox 3 slow to respond to remote control

2006-08-31 Thread TiredLegs

To prevent users (like me) from entering extra remote control presses
when the SB does not appear to be responding right away, a great
feature would be visual feedback on the SB display when a remote
command is received, such as flashing a tiny remote control icon or
even just a few pixels in a consistent position on the display. I've
seen this type of thing on several devices, and I expect it would be
fairly trivial for Slim's software/firmware folks to implement it.

The Squeezebox itself would issue the display icon as soon as it
receives an IR command, without having to wait for any response from
the Slimserver. It confirms for the user that: a) he or she
successfully pressed a button on the remote; b) the batteries in the
remote are not dead; and c) the SB received the command OK.

jvc_dvd is the IR codes for a JVC DVD player. This lets you take a
cheapo Universal Remote (which probably isn't "trainable" and probably
doesn't list the magic code for Slimdevices) and just tell it "I have a
JVC DVD player!" .. the remote will send JVC codes, and the server will
parse them.

It works well... unless you have a JVC DVD player.. or a JVC TV.

problems seems to happen wireless and wired.

It can be very unresponsive even when nothing obvious seems to be
taking system resources. Once I've started to understand some of the
debug options, I'll see if I can suss out what's happening.

Anyone else have any thoughts?

Cheers,

Richard

Yes. The design of Squeezebox is that there must be a Slimserver around
-- Squeezenetwork is basically a Slimserver in the sky. If your
Slimserver is running on a big desktop computer, an antique laptop in
the closet, or a ReadyNAS in the basement, the only difference should be
performance and storage space.

Good choice!

You will also enjoy the superior sound quality, faster UI, larger

Try to reset the box by holding down the power off button on the remote
control for about 20 seconds. If it doesn't reset and reboot, then
write to support at slimdevices dot com and describe the problem. Or
call them at the number on this page:
http://www.slimdevices.com/au_company.html

The support people have the procedures to walk you through it, one on
one, determine what the problem is, and the authority to arrange a
replacement if there is a problem they can't fix over the phone.

This forum isn't a good place for that sort of activity. And the
support people mostly don't read this forum.

The issue is NOT that it's getting to warm, but that these particular
displays are not functioning within their specified temp range. If you
encounter this problem we will swap it out - it does not seem to be
widespread. We have the display vendor looking into it.

I have ramped down the display brightness (from 4 to 3) and the room is

I guess there must be a threshold temperature that causes a malfunction

[slim] Re: Squeezebox 3 Display failure!!!

2005-12-10 Thread docbee

Hi,
my brother will bring me two sb3 on x-mas when he takes the long way
from california to germany to visit my family. I am now quite concerned
that importing these babies this way will bring me into serious trouble
when they have a production fault like in the situation described
above. Oh my god... all this shipping overhead for replacement will
drive my nuts (and poor)!

Up to now I thought sb's are stable products where a hw defect is
something you normally don't see. But the wave of display failures
building up here does make me a little nervous what to think about
product quality :-(

After having excellent experience with my slimp3 and the sb2 I hope the
sb3's will not wipe out this impression. For international customers
(that do directly buy at slim devices) problems like these are going to
seriously damage reputation!

Hopefully my two sb3s coming ahead will work fine. Otherwise I will be
extremly disappointed! I can live with beta-sw that gets better over
time, but I am not willing to live with beta-hw for serious money. As
said before, I am really concerned and the happiness about getting
these nice babies is mixed with fear that they might fail the next day.

[slim] Re: Squeezebox 3 Display failure!!!

2005-12-10 Thread happyfishman

Seems like this is a potential component fault issue.

I have noticed that my device does get a little hot when it is running.
It's in a room maintained at around 18-20 deg C and it's not placed
close to anything that generates any additional heat so I'm not
creating the problem. I think that the heating up is causing the
display to fail since if I power down, the standby screen is gradually
restored within a couple of minutes. If I turn the device back on too
soon the affected parts of the display are still missing. If I wait for
5-10 minutes the full display is restored and will remain for about an
hour before failing. The music playing functions are not affected. I
have the display set at full brightness and I'm wondering whether this
is aggrevating or even causing the problem.

Is the heat generation normal in this device? Also wondering whether
this might have a regional slant. I am in the UK operating with 240v
(European?) version. Any ideas anyone?

I haven't tested the specific products you're asking about, but
generally yes DAC technology hs come a long way in recent years, and
you will probably find that SB3 sounds better than older high-end CD
players. As for the sound card there should be no contest as sound card
manufacturers generally don't pay too much attention to delivering clean
power, even on the expensive models.

The only was to know for sure is to give a listen for yourself - I
expect you'll be surprised by SB3's performance.

Remember, this wasn't something I was expecting people to buy - just a
way of getting more reviews, as and reputable magazine only review
stuff you can buy.

A magazine review comparing music-serving solutions is pointless if the
amps are different and everyone would want a different amp.

Imagine this for a review:

blah blah blah
The Slimserver Deluxe package has everthing you need for a serious
system. You just need to buy the amp and we recommend the . In
addition not only does this package alone beat the Phillips , the
Sonos and the Yamaha but if you already own a faster
computer, a Palm or want to use your MAC, use another DAC or want any
further flexibility you can also just purchase the basic Squeezebox and
add these features - something the Phillips, the Sonos, and the Yamaha
don't provide.

CONCLUSION
Phillips: Price 1, Audio 5, Flexibility 1
Sonos: Price 1, Audio 5, Flexibility 1
Yamaha: Price 1, Audio 5, Flexibility 1
Squeezbox Deluxe: Price 1, Audio 5, Flexibility 3

All the players are expensive and inflexible (SB Deluxe does have a web
interface and you can play Quake on it's computer so we give it 3), all
sound the same, there is nothing really seperating them. We say forget
all of these players and build you own Squeezebox setup staring with
just the great value unit itself because chances are you already have a
network, a computer, a DAC and other things.

I tried the new Phillips in Curry;s the other day and whilst the
all-in-one idea is a good one, the interface was the same as the bottom
of the range streamium's and still has the same problem that the screen
needs a backlight or a change of colours or something, black text on
grey doesn't work!

I'm busy working on the "cool looking" PC as we speak, have already
sorted out a headless system which rips CD's to FLAC or MP3
automatically, runs Slimserver out of the box and has crash recovery
software (just in case anything crashes, it restarts it within 60
seconds).
Am looking into suppliers for decent cases etc. to expand on the range
of cheaper recycled PC's, will post here as soon as I sort anything
out.

Andrew

p.s. I'd also add a Sonic T-amp in a posh box to the list for the whole
package!

2005-11-21 Thread Jim

Good to see.

Would be interesting to ask them what defines a top-end and what they
think about comparing the SB3 with the top-end models they reviewed.
In audio I've always thought top-end meant the sound and nothing else
and not hearing the other devices it would be interesting how they
compared to a SB3 with a dedicated DAC.

If you're in top-end only audio type worth bothering with is FLAC, plus
ability to have access to lossy radio - maybe. Any sort of remote
control with a screen can easily be substituted for some sort of
PalmPilot type device. You're rich so expense of a computer is not a
concern and no doubt one is already ownded. With a computer connected
a million other options are opened.

Ease of use of ripping might be but you could argue a properly
configured PC with EAC is not going to be harder to use (and achieve
better quality) than any device that accepts CD's. And also, there's
always the "we rip your CD's" option for the seriously rich or lazy.

Maybe just for rich people who don't know how to choose the other stuff
or magazine reviews against the true expensive/hi-end stuff SlimDevices
should offer the "SqueezeBox Ultra Package" comprising of a SB3, a
"cool looking" PC, wireless router, Color Palm "Remote", dedicated DAC
and a free FLAC rip of up to 500 CD's.

I'm about to buy another two, so it'd be great if you can sort something out.

Currently at the moment we have price parity at £179.99 (wired) and
£229.99 (wireless) with the US (once you add delivery and VAT).

We will be talking with Patrick this week about how we can implement
the $100 discount when you buy two Squeezebox Gen3 so if you are in the
market for two units please hang fire for the time being.

If it will cost you £250 then the duty will be VAT on £250 + £4 royal
mail handling fee. Which is roughly £48.00.

I would buy from a UK dealer if I were you. I got my SB2 from
Broadbandstuff.co.uk which included free shipping.

I haven't found a UK dealer with a SB3 yet though, so you may need to
wait. I personally an going to stick with my SB2, though the SB3 looks
nicer, but I bought it to listen to music and not look at.

Yes, that's the way I remember the discussion as well. I was just
wondering whether the $100 promomotion would make it more worthwhile
ordering direct.

This has been discussed before, I think the consensus was that you're
better off buying from one of the numerous resellers here in the UK.
Once they have stock in of the new box, they should all be able to give
you a quick response and local support (just in case you have to return
anything!).
