Hi Chuck Garey, A point well-made, Garey... I had a similar such event occur here once with an old Heathkit HW-12A monoband transceiver...it employed an internal open-framed T/R relay, and after due application (several times) of isopropyl alcohol via a pre-wetted paper matchstick, it was good to go again. ~73~ Eddy VE3CUI - VE3XZ - Original Message - From: Garey Barrell [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Drakelist drakelist@zerobeat.net Sent: Saturday, September 27, 2008 11:35 AM Subject: Re: [Drakelist] receiver loses signal after keying transmitter Chuck - Clean the relay contacts in the T-4X. [Drakelist] T-4X Mic Jack
Good Morning All, I just finished reading about the whys wherefores of Drake's decision to use a slightly smaller phone jack as the mic terminal in their T-4 series of transmitters... I had no idea of this until I tried plugging a regular 1/4 mic plug into the jack. Looking in behind the front of the chassis, I decided that I could safely bore out the opening of the jack to a more user-friendly (i.e. common) 1/4 barrel, and I proceeded to do just that utilizing the B.F.A.I concept (a.k.a. Brute Force And Ignorance, Hi Hi). I proceeded slowly, and surely enough, it ended successfully. Now I just have to be careful as to which plug I insert into which jack, as VE3EFJ warns... I wonder if anyone else reading this has done the very same thing, but for reasons unknown, will not ...go public with a pronouncement...?! ~73~ Eddy VE3CUI - VE3XZ___ Drakelist mailing list Drakelist@zerobeat.net http://mailman.zerobeat.net/mailman/listinfo/drakelist

[Drakelist] An Old Idea
Hi Guys, The other day I wanted to do some casual SW listening on the bands had need of a quick-n-easy coupler for use between my zip antenna dipole Drake R-4 receiver... I recall reading years ago about using one of those ubiquitous 75-ohm unbalanced to 300-ohm balanced TV baluns (you know the kind I mean---it seems EVERY VCR ever sold in the 80's came with at least one in the box!) for coupling coax-fed antennas to the balanced twin-lead antenna terminals of vintage receivers...well, I'm happy to say that REVERSE connections are just as effective. I cobbled-up a HB RCA phono-plug-to-F-plug adaptor, connected it to the balun from the antenna terminal of the R-4, then clipped the end of the zip cord feeder to the balanced end of same. Voila! A simple, effective set-up that requires NO tuning/adjusting/extra knobs for ANY SW frequency... ...AND I finally got to use one of the vintage TV baluns that have been cluttering the place up here for some 20+ years! ~73~ Eddy VE3CUI - VE3XZ ___ Drakelist mailing list Drakelist@zerobeat.net http://mailman.zerobeat.net/mailman/listinfo/drakelist

[drakelist] T-4X: No Audio On SSB / AM CONCLUSION
EP Swynar [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Good Morning All, Well, forgive me, please, if I might sound a bit forward, but I am taking a bow... I FINALLY fixed the no audio problem with my T-4X! After I'd discovered the chunk of broken phenolic in the rear wafer of S-1, and determined where, exactly, the second loose orphan lug was originally attached to the switch, I glued the thing back together with generous amounts of Weld Bond brand epoxy. Yesterday I re-installed the wafer (no easy feat in and of itself --- talk about tight spaces), re-connected all of the wires (a sketch of the assembly made BEFORE dis-assembly helps a LOT here), and hooked-up a D-104 to the mic jack... VOILA! Perfect audio, on USB, LSB, and AM...and the rig keys nicely with PTT, or VOX, exactly as described in the manual. I hope I might never have to go through all THAT again, any time soon, though. Space is at a real premium around that switch, and one must always take into account any potential long term effects upon the reliability of the assembly due to strain. Indeed, that may well be why the switch broke in the first place. This time around, though, I've added some slack to all of the connecting points at the switch by soldering in extra splices of wire, to relieve strain... No, it may not be especially glamorous, but hopefully, this will do the trick. One final footnote: the XYL daughter are off on a road trip, have left me alone for the day...I was hoping to set-up the Twins on our backyard gazebo for some leisurely QSOs, when I noticed that the multi-band dipole that I use on such occasions had dropped from the halyard located 50' up the tower... I poked around the back of switch S1 in my T-4X, saw that the switch lug that anchors R63 C132 looked a tad askew relative to the rest of the lugs...sure enough, with the aid of a small screwdiver, it was quickly made apparent that that the lug had been broken off of the switch, taking a good chunk of phenolic with it. I've epoxied these things successfully in the past with an old Heathkit SB-400 transmitter that I owned, but man-o-man, this particular switch is buried REALLY good within the bowels of the T-4X! Well if it works in TUNE, then ALL the audio stages are working fine. In TUNE, the first mic preamp stage is switched to become a phase shift audio oscillator, and that tone then goes through the transmitter just as if you whistled into the microphone. That same tone is used for the sidetone, and to keep the PTT relay closed in CW. So this leaves a very narrow field for failures, i.e., a couple of switch contacts or the mic jack. So... Either John is correct that your mic is bad, (D-104's are prone to failing from heat and/or humidity,) the wiring to the mic jack is wrong, or there is a problem with the switching between mic amp and TUNE oscillator. You can check the mic with a scope, if you have one, if not, a VTVM or good DMM right at the cartridge terminals should show considerable (a volt or so) AC output when you whistle into the mic. 73, Garey - K4OAH Glen Allen, VA Drake 2-B, 4-B, C-Line TR-4/C Service Supplement CDs www.k4oah.com EP Swynar wrote: EP Swynar [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- On 4th July, Garey wrote... ...If you have a KEY plugged in, it must be closed (or unplugged) for SSB... *** Hi Garey, Well, I was HOPING that the solution to my lack of audio on SSB / AM with the T-4X would have been that easy, but alas, there was no joy in Muddville (again) when I tried it here (double sigh!). Hi, Eddy - Do you think you could sand down the frequency on a crystal close to the one you want? I don't know what kind of crystals are in your receivers, or even +how it would work for receivers, but it worked for me for transmitting on my old homebrew rig. Way back in the day(late 50's), when I was a teenage novice with not much money, I remember sanding down crystals that were given to me by other hams. It worked pretty good and gave me different frequencies to use on my crystal controlled 6146 xmtr. The crystals had to be the kind that are in a plastic case that opens up and It only worked one way, of course - can't add material to them, unfortunately - and I forget if sanding them made freqs go up or down - it seems to me that it would make the freq higher the more you sand, but that's just an educated (?) guess. I remember opening up the little plastic case, sanding them down, putting them back in the case and then transmitting and monitoring to see what new frequency they were. Sometimes I broke them, or went too far out of the novice band, but eventually I had a few crystals that I could switch out if the band got crowded on my single frequency xmtr. It was kind of tedious, but it gave me a pretty good poor man's VFO. If you've got lots of crystals that you don't mind experimenting with, it might be a possibility that could work. What do you think, folks? Rcvr crystals are probably different, don't open up, and there's probably some technical reason that makes this a ridiculous suggestion. NO modifications are needed to either the T-4(any) or the TR-4(any) to use the 6GJ5s. Pin 3 in the Drake 4 Line transmitters is the cathode of the final tubes. Pin 8 in the transmitters is grounded at the socket. With 6JB6s, K is connected internally to Pin 3, and G3 is connected internally to Pin 8. With 6GJ5s, K AND G3 are connected internally to Pin 3, AND there is _NO_ connection to Pin 8. So everything works the same, except G3 is connected directly to K rather than via a 15 ohm and 3.3 ohm resistor. The only difference is the interelectrode capacitance, which is small enough (0.5 pF) that the neutralization circuit is able to take care of it. What's been missing all along here, is the mandatory execution --- right from the get-go --- of TWO crucial operations, i.e.: (1) The wire from pin #8 to chassis ground at the final amplifier sockets in the T4X must first be snipped, and, (2) A new wire has to be added, jumpering pin #3 to pin #8 at both sockets. What will be accomplished thusly is the following: (1) The pin #3 cathode break-out of the 6GJ5 will now effectively be at the pin #8-cum-pin #3 of the T4X socket, and, (2) For better or worse, the suppressor grids of the 6GJ5 tubes will be at the exact same potential as the cathodes (NOTE: is that an especially good --- or bad --- thing?). Failure to first execute the ...nip tuck at the sockets will leave the current meter reading zero all the time, and the finals will be on constantly...correct? Good Morning All, I'm curious as to the results anyone may have had by substituting 12JB6 tubes in place of the stock 6JB6 bottles in their T4X transmitters... Glancing at the filament wiring in the schematic, such a transformation certainly looks like it'd be easy enough to execute, relatively harmless, AND simple to return the rig back to normal at any future time, should the need arise. [drakelist] Drake R-4 Receiver Tube Subs: EPILOGUE
EP Swynar [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Good Morning All, Further to my note the other day re. substituting a good 12BA6 tube for a weak 12BZ6 in my R-4 receiver, one must be cognizant of the highlighted provisio in the Tube Substitution Manual, i.e. ...May not work in all circuits... If you take a look at the base diagrams for both tubes --- pins 2, and 7 --- it is readily apparent that the suppressor grid the cathode are transposed in both: while the 12BA6 DOES work as a remedial fix in the RF amplifier stage of the R-4, it would not, in all liklihood, do the same if one was to replace the 12BZ6 in the crystal calibrator with one. ...Caveat emptor applies! [drakelist] R-4 Crystal Replacement(s)
Good Morning All, If you take a moment to click onto this site http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemrd=1item=220185518740ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:ITih=012 it will become readily apparent why I'm experimenting here with the notion of using a dedicated RF signal generator as a replacement for any HC-6/U band crystals at the back of my new R-4 receiver! With days still to go on this auction, it's already approaching the price of the entire Drake Twins station that I purchased here the other day... BTW, the notion of a signal-generator-cum-crystal-substitute is a viable one: I played about with mine yesterday, and managed to copy all manner of shortwave medium wave stuff on the rig, ...for free. The injection level of RF voltage into the crystal socket is important, though: I obviously never had enough soup from my WW2-vintage generator, because S-meter side-by-side comparisons --- i.e. the signal strength of a BC station, crystal vs. generator --- showed that I needed a lot more horsepower out of the generator than it was capable of delivering... A solidstate, compact generator --- with a built-in crystal calibrator --- is in order here for casual SWL'ing. For the Ham bands, though, I still prefer the rockbound route... ~73~ Eddy VE3CUI - VE3XZ
[drakelist] Drake Twins
Good Morning All, Well, I spent the better part of the day yesterday retrieving a set of Drake Twins from a fellow Ham living some 2+ hours away from me (one way!)...was the drive worth the bother...? In a word, YES! My initial impression of the receiver (a first generation all-tube R-4) is VERY positive: I love the passband tuning feature, and that calibrated main tuning knob --- in 1-KHz markers --- is clever, and effective. It's also a very pleasing rig to the eye, and looks FB sitting next to its matching T-4X transmitter. I have no doubt whatsoever in my mind, that, had I known better back in 1983 --- when I stood ...at the crossroads and took the quantum technological leap from my Heathkit SB-400 Hallicrafters S-77A, to a brand new Yaesu FT-980 --- I would surely have shopped around for a good used set of Twins then... I was really racked with guilt about throwing my lot in with a microprocessed technology that the FT-980 presented, having had the ability of repairing anything everything in my shack up to that time...and, like a fool, I did not even consider the possibilities of taking the Drake route, and instead, pondered the chances of buying a good, used Collins S-line, instead, back then. I ended-up passing the S-line by, because it did not incorporate 160-meters. Well, it took some 24 years, alright, but an old wrong has been righted at VE3CUI --- and I could not be happier with this self-presented Christmas gift, I can assure you! Merry Christmas to all, my vy ~73!~ Eddy VE3CUI - VE3XZ

[drakelist] R-4 Series Crystal Alternatives
Good Afternoon All, I'm curious about the experience of others in the matter of utilizing possible ...substitutes for the frequency band oscillator crystals --- be they synthesizers, self-excited analog oscillators, whatever --- in the R-4 series of receivers, to expand the frequency coverage of same... To date, my research has come up with three different articles on the subject, i.e.: --- August 1972 HAM RADIO magazine (Frequency Synthesizer for the Drake R-4; --- May 1981 QST magazine (General-Coverage Reception with the Drake R-4C, and, --- June 2004 April QST magazine (Give that Drake Receiver a New Lease on Life). Of all these, the May '81 QST appears to be about the simplest to construct, even though it uses a pair of the now relatively expensive ECG222 (come NTE-222) dual-gate Mosfet transistors...but how in the world does one attain (and maintain) solid, stable, steady crystal-like oscillation in a relatively simple Colpitts circuit, as high as 40.8-MHz...?! I'm putting out feelers at this time, because in three short days from now, I shall be the proud owner of a pair of Drake Twins here...a Christmas present that I am presenting to myself, just a few days ahead of THE BIG DAY, Hi Hi. The R-4 is almost a 2-B, just with a linear PTO and 1 kHz dial calibration. All tubes. Very similar in operation, and will transceive with the matching T-4X for an excellent CW station. Four filter bandwidths, (400, 1200, 2400 and 4800 Hz,) passband tuning, noise blanker, LC notch and 100 kHz crystal calibrator built in. The R-4A (early 13 tube model) is an improved R-4, almost identical specifications. PTO and Band Oscillators converted to solid state. The R-4A (late 11 tube model) almost identical specifications. Product detector, BFO, AGC and low level audio stages converted to solid state. The R-4B (early) is very similar to the late R-4A, minor modifications and crystal calibrator multivibrator for 25 kHz markers. The R-4B (late) almost identical except PTO changed from bipolar to FET. The R-4C (early) very similar, except IF filters changed to crystal filters. Only the 2.3 kHz filter is standard, 250, 500, 1800, 4000 and 6000 Hz BW are available as options. The 4000 6000 Hz filters are normally installed in a special socket under the chassis and are effective on AM only. Four position filter switch. The noise blanker was optional. Entire audio chain solid state, tubes used only from RF to IF, all other stages and oscillators solid state. The R-4C (late) same. Five position filter switch. The 2-B through the R-4B used L-C filters in the IF. This type of filter has much gentler slopes, which means that nearby signals are still heard, just at reduced levels. The crystal filters are steep sided, more like the crystal filters in today's receivers. Personally, I prefer the L-C filters for all except heavy duty contest use. I like to hear what is going on around my frequency, instead of listening with blinders on... The T-4 series transmitters are all pretty much the same, the T-4X had 4 pole crystal filters while the T-4XB and C had 8 pole filters. The later ones therefore had slightly better carrier and unwanted sideband suppression, neither of which has ANY effect on CW operation. ANY 4 series receiver will transceive with ANY 4 series transmitter, mix and match. There are minor things like the B line had a neon indicator light under the dial to show which PTO was controlling in transceive while the C line just turned the dial lamps on or off. The R-4 and R-4A had neither, so you had to look at the switch! My opinion. The R-4B is probably the best receiver overall. It has great audio, smooth AGC, all the filters and noise blanker are built in. The L-C filters are not quite as drop off the table selective, but I prefer that for casual QSOs. The R-4C has poorer audio, a little harsher, the better (?) crystal filters are extra, and the noise blanker is extra. The R-4 and R-4A are just earlier iterations of the R-4B, and are not quite as refined, although some say they prefer the early R-4A to the R-4B because the tube type product detector in the R-4A is cleaner. 73, Garey - K4OAH Glen Allen, VA Drake 2-B, 4-B C-Line Service Supplement CDs www.k4oah.com Howard Traxler wrote: Howard Traxler [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Hi again all. I undid umpteen screws, knobs, spacers, protective screens, ad nauseam to get the thing removed --- somehow during all of this electronic compontentry feat of gymnastics, whatever it was that whacked-out the meter movement yesterday prevented it from dropping back down to zero, became re-set. Chalk one up to ...industrial phenomenon. I couldn't really tap the meter before, when it was securely in place, to free anything up that might have temorarily ...snafu'ed inside, because of the bulk of the amplifier surrounding itlooks like the bump grind of its removal worked wonders for it, though, and me... I laughed at myself when I held a perfectly normal meter staring me in the face at the end of it all, because I thought right away of one of the Apollo moon landing missions, when an astronaut's camera on the lunar surface refused to work...what did he do to fix it so far away from home? He tapped the thing! I believe history records that it worked fine after that. My T-4XC has been intermittently 'hanging' in transmit mode on CW... * Hi Doug, This may be of no help to you whatsoever, however, for it's worth, some time ago I was using an external relay switching box to activate the T/R relay inside my homebrewed linear amplifier (a pair of 813's) --- the 12 VDC relay inside the box received its control, or on voltage, from the Icom 751A transceiver that was used to excite the amplifier... Anyway, suddenly and without warning one day, the T/R control relay inside the box decides to hang in transmit mode, just like it was activated --- even though in reality, I'd switched from sending, to receiving. The duration of its hang was dependent upon how long a transmission I was making --- if it was a L-O-N-G ...old buzzard-type monolgue, it'd hang forever...until I'd momentarily switch off the exciter's power supply, that is, and then it would release. Anyway, I don't know what precipated this sudden affliction --- re-arrangement of the rigs atop the shack...? The phase of the moon...? --- but I dismantled the T/R relay box, put an ordinary RF choke in series with each of the coil windings to the relay, and bypassed these leads at the entry point of the enclosure with a pair of 0.01-ufd. disc ceramics. Problem solved. Is it possible that, for reasons unknown, RF is maybe somehow getting into the relay control circuitry...? I know it's a stretch, because the rig obviously worked well enough before...but then so did mine here!
