[Drakelist] T-4X tune switch -- false alarm

2010-11-13 Thread Howard Traxler

Thanks everybody for your thoughts, but:

False alarm; I should have had my wife read the function control to me. It
seems I was remembering wrong; the positions of the switch are: CW, Tune,
SSB, AM? Is that right? I thought the first position was SSB and things
just weren't working right. After I figured out the switch, I got it on the
air this morning and it's working OK. Now to get the T-4XC in shape.

When the relay is relaxed and in the receive position the antenna does not
connect to the receiver; there is no continuity between the so-239 and the
RCA jack that goes to the receiver antenna connection.

Thanks again, folks. I'll keep trying.

[Drakelist] Looking for Crystals

2010-11-12 Thread Howard Traxler
Kevin, the two marked 22.7 and 26.6 work in the R-4A. The other one has a
four (or more) digit freq (1368.) or something doesn't seem to work.
I'm thinking that it is not made for the Drake line.

Well Kevin, I really don't know what crystals are worth now. I think it
has

something to do with how desirable they are. I paid almost $30 for 160
meter and about $17 each for the two additional 10 meter bands. I have an
80 meter crystal that quit working; When I decide to replace it, it's
gonna

cost clost to $50. Other short wave bands, I would think aren't quite so
valuable. Maybe it's just I who thinks that was because I'm not too
interested in listening to short wave.

I don't know the type numbers, but these do fit into the extra crystal
sockets on the back of the Drake receivers. I think today I'll plug them
into my R-4A to be sure they work and just what band the one with the
strange number covers.

I'd sure like to get rid of all three of them, so how about a package
deal?

I'll send you the three for $11--just because today is 11/11. Wait 'til I
try them before you decide--unles you already have decided in the
negative.

Kevin,
I have three crystals that came in some kind of a package deal quite a
while

ago. I don't even remember what the deal was, but what bands are you
looking for? My three are 22.7 and 26.6 which, if my calculations are
correct, would give you 11.6 mhz band and 15.5 mhz band. The third
crystal
has a 5 (or more) digit number on it that just doesn't make any sense. I
have never plugged them in to see if they work; so, they would be "as
is".

Are these something you can use?

Kevin, Thanks to some others on here, I got it in successfully. It's plug-in
and requires no soldering. It does, however, require a bit of dextarity. It's
on the inside but the clamp that holds it in look just like the clamps on the
back for the other filters.

It says Shurewood (spellcheck) on it. I bought it from someone on the list
here. It improved the signal strength of AM by lots but it's a bit narrow for
high fidelity. I'll keep it in and learn to like it.

[Drakelist] R-4C electrolytics

One last question and I'll try to be still for a while.
I'm hearing a slight ripple in the audio output of my R-4C. Quite noticeable

Re: [Drakelist] Hooking up my C line?

2010-11-03 Thread Howard Traxler
Thanks to all who responded regarding my C line. I do apppreciate all
suggestions. The most frustrating of all regards the manual. Most of you
are probably not aware that I am blind and can't really make use of the
manuals. I have purchased one of Garey's CDs to determine if there was
enough verbal description to assist me. There is some, and some good
information, but not enough to help me troubleshoot or maintain my A, B, or
C lines. NOT AT ALL GAREY'S FALT! I expect that us blinks are in the
minority here and Garey shouldn't be expected to format his material
differently for only a few.

To my real request now: Looking at the rear of the R-4C, to the right is a
cover plate that covers the extra crystal sockets. To the left are three
horizontal somethings that look like they could be individually removed. I
had the thought that these are covers or clamps over the filters. I thought
the AM filter would go there somehow??? Maybe not, huh? Looking at the top
of the receiver (with the case off), there is a plate that extends from the
rear of the radio to about the middle; maybe three inches wide and held in
by three screws. It may have the AM filter under it--all this stuff is
directly back from the knob that controls the band width. That switch is
awfully noisy and is intermittant on AM. I'd like to find and spray that
switch and install the AM filter.

Could someone please describe how to access the place for the filter, and
the rotary switch that controls the band width.

Thank you all for your efforts.

[Drakelist] Hooking up my C line?

2010-10-29 Thread Howard Traxler

Hi all,

I disconnected the cables between my T4XC and R4C to move some things
around. Now I'm gonna try to hook them back up. Have a couple questions:

I am assuming that jumpers should go between similarly-marked connections of
the TX and RX. I have a couple cables that claim to be something special.
In which position should they be connected? I'm thinking that the rest can
be normal shielded audio cables. To the left of the main set of RCA jacks
on the receiver--looking at its rear, there's a round female socket with,
maybe, four pin holes. Wondering what that does? I'd like to install the
AM filter. Wonder if that has to be soldered in and where does it go?

If this representation comes out right, it should indicate the position and
marking of each of the jacks. If someone has time, maybe you could explain
what they all do? Oh, on the back of the AC4 power supply, there's an RCA
jack. Might that be parallelled with the two-pin plug for keying the
amplifier?

Thank you very much for any instruction.

[Drakelist] R4C noisy switch

2010-07-02 Thread Howard Traxler

Hi all,
I think it's called the band pass switch; it's the AM, SSB, CW, and all the
narrower CW positions. It's noisy. When slightly moving the switch it
makes a lot of noise that causes the AVC to cut the received signal way
down. Sometimes, in the AM position, I have to bang on the case several
times to get the best connection/loudest signal. Do you think this might be
something more serious than just a dirty switch? Thanks anybody.

Subject: Re: [Drakelist] R-4C Audio Problem

Bill -

The Calibrator problem is almost certainly the electrolytic C179 on the
Calibrator board itself. This puts a little hum modulation on the
calibrator signal. It's also possible that C167 has gone up a little in
ESR as well, which might also account for some of the audio hum you are
hearing. Another possible contributor would be C202.

Best idea is a kit from "hayseedhamfest.com", but he is temporarily out of
stock. He has the full kit with ALL electrolytics to drop in.

One other possibility for the audio hum is just the sensitivity of your
'phones'. They're much more sensitive than your speaker and typically
have a lower frequency response as well. The audio stages, like most, run
"wide open" or maximum gain, all the time. The output level is determined
by how much signal is put INTO the AF stages via the volume control. As a
result, the s/n ratio is not very good at the very low levels, where you
have minimum signal and maximum noise, (always maximum noise/gain,) as
opposed to "some" signal with the same "noise" at the higher levels. It's
best to have the AF GAIN control at 10-11 o'clock, which is normal for the
speaker.

One way around this is to put a series resistor either in the R-4C or in
the headphone plug to drop the sensitivity of the phones to something
similar to the speaker. This way you can run AF GAIN up where the s/n is
better without blowing out your eardrums! I'd start with a couple hundred
ohms or so and select whatever lets you set that gain control up into the
"good" region.

When I

vary the volume control, the birdies sweep through the passband of the
receiver. Also, when listening to the audio output with a pair of
headphones
when the receiver is muted, I hear the usual low level hum that is
typical for
the R-4C, but it changes characteristics over a relatively small range
around

the 9 o'clock position of the volume control. The hum does not change in
volume, it just sounds rather raspy over this small range, similar in
characteristic to the birdies I hear in between the 25 KHz markers. Is
it
possible the audio output stage is self oscillating at some odd frequency
and
is somehow mixing with or modulating the output of the crystal
calibrator?

I don't have access to a scope, but I do have access to a good quality

I wouldn't be surprised if there are some electrolytic capacitor issues.

Hi all, don't know that this question went out on the list:

Friday I was tuning up my T-4XC on 80M. Heard a very loud POP came from
somewhere behind the front panel. No smell of smoke or oazone.

Never tune for more than 4 or 5 seconds at a time and never off-resonance
more than 1 or 2 seconds. Before this incident, the xmtr tuned up to 120
to
140 watts (according to my TW-1 talking watt meter); after, it now peaks
at

about 80W. I had a QSO afterwords, so I know it's working some. Antenna
match is about 1.3/1.

Do you think I did something real bad or maybe it's just a tube or a plate
choke or something? Where should I start to diagnose?

Thanks, anybody.

73, Howard, WA9RYF

This is sort of generalized trouble shooting advice. First make a
careful visual inspection. Sometimes parts fail without producing much
smoke or odor, however, there may be visible residue. Also wiggle the
resistors a bit to see if any are cracked.

The next step is to make socket resistance and voltage readings and
compare them to the values in the handbook charts. Keep in mind that in
equipment as old as this that the resistors will have drifted so the
values may not be exact without indicating a problem. However, if any are
more than perhaps 20% off its a pretty good sign of something wrong.

Of course check power supply values first and open up the power supply
and inspect it also. Even if the noise did not seem to come from the PS it
may have.

[Drakelist] T4-XC antenna connector

2009-05-13 Thread Howard Traxler
Hi folks, it's been a while.

About the so-239 antenna connector on the T4-XC: It seems to be intermittant.
I can wiggle the coax and make it connect (to receive). But when it's screwed
in tight, of course, I can't wiggle it and there's no connection. It's so bad
now that I have to have the sleeve completely unscrewed and wiggle lots to get
any signal to the receiver.

Question: Does this happen a lot? Should I be looking for something in
particular? Is the so-239 likely to be bad? Is the relay mounted close to
that connector and could be causing a problem?

Hope it's an easy fix. Thanks, anybody.

two Drake receivers. And my favorite, the R-4A, looks like it was draggged
behind something down a gravel road; and I paid $225 for it on ebay.

Hi all,
Just a couple weeks ago got my R-4C back from Jeff who seemed to have gone

up swapping 80 meter crystals with my R-4A and now it works. But, of
course, no 80 on the R-4A.

Is this a problem with the crystal? Is it a common thing? Can I get it to
work again or do I need to order another one?

Thanks for any suggestions.

[drakelist] TR-4 silent receiver

2008-02-26 Thread Howard Traxler

"Howard Traxler" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterance to the drakelist gang
--
Wonder if anyone has any suggestions, please:

I left my TR-4 alone for a couple hours; when I came back, there was no
receive audio. There is still a faint (normal) hum in the speaker, I can
get sound into the amplifier from an external test source, and can faintly
hear (through the speaker) when I tap on the mic.

Simptoms leading up to this: For the past few months, when I put the rig in
tune, the transmitter would cycle on and off at about four times per second.
It allowed me enough on time to tune and I did use the rig. Of late, the
relay would not close and silence the receiver when I put it in tune.

Now in its silent condition, Push to talk and vox still seem to work,
however, there doesn't seem to be any power out. Tune position will not
close the relay.

All the tubes still get warm--but I didn't check the finals. Replaced the
47 bulb in the meter.

A friend is coming over tonight to help with it but I don't know what to
look for. We'll probably check some tubes.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

[drakelist] pin-out on jones connector

2008-01-14 Thread Howard Traxler

"Howard Traxler" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterance to the drakelist gang

Hi folks,
I just bought a home-made power supply--that you all no doubt have seen--for
the drake transmitter line. It has a Jones female plug hanging from it.
Wonder if someone could tell me how to count the pins and what I should find
on each one? Would like to know that it's right before I hook it up.

Thanks lots.

: Well, it seems there is light at the end of the tunnel.
:
:
: Here's what I've done:
:
:1) Cleaned up the grime and dust using Q-tips and alcohol.
:2) Applied DeoxIT to all switch contacts, tube sockets, and
: the T/R relay.
:3) Checked all the tubes on my TV-7A to make sure there were
: not any obvious problems.
:4) Checked all resistance measurements against the table in
: the TR-3 manual. The first time through, several of the
: measurements were way out. It turns out the T/R relay
: contacts were in dire need of cleaning; beyond what DeoxIT
: was able to do.
:5) Installed a grounded cord in the AC-3.
:6) Checked the power supply voltages. All were within spec,
: and the AC ripple was less than 175 mA on all the supplies.
: All parts on the supply are original!
:
: I plugged the radio and power supply together and tried to receive
: any signals. Nothing. Rats... !!
:
: Here is a major DUH!!!
:
: It seems I needed to plug in the RV-3 to make everything work. Out
: of the box, there is a jumper installed in the TR-3 to allow it to
: work without a remote VFO. If you add the remote VFO, you need to
: remove the jumper. So without the remote VFO plugged in, the receive
: section was effectively disabled.
:
: Once I got everything put together correctly, I was finally able to
: receive a 40m broadcast.
:
: Next on the list is to check all the voltages against the table in
: the manual and then go through the alignment procedure.
:
: Unfortunately, that will probably have to wait until the weekend :-(
:
:
: Thank you everyone for your help and suggestions.

I have the same problem with my TR-4; but only I think it's the band pass

Hi all again,
Looking to put filters into my R-4C. I think this means am, narrow and wide
ssb, different flavors of cw. Having never set up an r-4c, I really don't
know. Are these the filters that go into the sockets on the eastern part of
the back panel? I looked at the International Radio site and I had to
choose first or second IF. Can someone tell me what to look for?

Someone here, I forgot who, offerred me a set of filters but I was hoping
not to have to pay his asking price.

Any info would help, please?

Thanks anybody.

[drakelist] The Drake Net

2007-12-02 Thread Howard Traxler

Sorry all, but I knew this a week ago:

What frequency and time is the Drake net on? I'm sure it's 40 meters and in
the middle of Sunday afternoon? I checked in two weeks in a row, but I
couldn't find it today. What the heck is wrong with me? It was a great net
and I'd like to check in (or at least, listen) all the time.

So, net, please advertise yourself.

Thanks.

Thanks Garey, someone here has already helped me get the R-4A hooked up as a
second receiver although I couldn't get it to mute. I'll try that again.
And then, is there a way to "spot" the frequency or do I just turn down the
drive, unmute the rcvr and tune it in?

Thanks again.

:
: Here's an extract from an earlier post I made about the R-4 series
: receivers.
:
: The R-4 is almost a 2-B, just with a linear PTO and 1 kHz dial
: calibration. All tubes. Very similar in operation, and will
: transceive with the matching T-4X for an excellent CW station. Four
: filter bandwidths, (400, 1200, 2400 and 4800 Hz,) passband tuning, noise
: blanker, LC notch and 100 kHz crystal calibrator built in.
:
: The R-4A (early 13 tube model) is an improved R-4, almost identical
: specifications. PTO and Band Oscillators converted to solid state.
:
: The R-4A (late 11 tube model) almost identical specifications. Product
: detector, BFO, AGC and low level audio stages converted to solid state.
:
: The R-4B (early) is very similar to the late R-4A, minor modifications
: and crystal calibrator multivibrator for 25 kHz markers.
:
: The R-4B (late) almost identical except PTO changed from bipolar to FET.
:
: The R-4C (early) very similar, except IF filters changed to crystal
: filters. Only the 2.3 kHz filter is standard, 250, 500, 1800, 4000 and
: 6000 Hz BW are available as options. The 4000 & 6000 Hz filters are
: normally installed in a special socket under the chassis and are
: effective on AM only. Four position filter switch. The noise blanker
: was optional. Entire audio chain solid state, tubes used only from RF
: to IF, all other stages and oscillators solid state.
:
: The R-4C (late) same. Five position filter switch.
:
: The 2-B through the R-4B used L-C filters in the IF. This type of
: filter has much gentler slopes, which means that nearby signals are
: still heard, just at reduced levels. The crystal filters are steep
: sided, more like the crystal filters in today's receivers.
: Personally, I prefer the L-C filters for all except heavy duty contest
: use. I like to hear what is going on around my frequency, instead of
: "listening with blinders on"...
:
: The T-4 series transmitters are all pretty much the same, the T-4X had 4
: pole crystal filters while the T-4XB and C had 8 pole filters. The
: later ones therefore had slightly better carrier and unwanted sideband
: suppression, neither of which has ANY effect on CW operation.
: ANY 4 series receiver will transceive with ANY 4 series transmitter, mix
: and match. There are minor things like the B line had a neon indicator
: light under the dial to show which PTO was controlling in transceive
: while the C line just turned the dial lamps on or off. The R-4 and R-4A
: had neither, so you had to look at the switch!
:
: My opinion. The R-4B is probably the best receiver overall. It has
: great audio, smooth AGC, all the filters and noise blanker are built
: in. The L-C filters are not quite as "drop off the table" selective,
: but I prefer that for casual QSOs.
:
: The R-4C has poorer audio, a little harsher, the "better" (?) crystal
: filters are extra, and the noise blanker is extra.
:
: The R-4 and R-4A are just earlier iterations of the R-4B, and are not
: quite as refined, although some say they prefer the early R-4A to the
: R-4B because the tube type product detector in the R-4A is "cleaner".

[drakelist] R-4A vs R-4C

2007-11-29 Thread Howard Traxler

"Howard Traxler" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterance to the drakelist gang

Hi again all. Here's a question that will require, probably a subjective
answer:

For about 30 years, I used an R-4A and loved it. I now aquired an
R-4C--without any of those plug-in filters. I don't like it much at all.
So I got another R-4A and was hoping to tweak it up to be like the one I
used to have.

Question: Why did I not need those filters in the R-4A and will I like the
R-4C more if I get the filters for it? Which receiver should I put my
effort into? I like to work both SSB and CW.

Thoughts anyone? Thank you much.

[drakelist] TR-4 buzzing sound from speaker

2007-11-16 Thread Howard Traxler

"Howard Traxler" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterance to the drakelist gang
--
Hi all Drake fans again,
I have a TR-4 with AC-4 upgraded to AC-4R. When turning on the xcvr, I hear
the customary surge when the caps are charging, then I hear a steady 60 HZ
purring sound along with the normal, almost unperceptable power supply hum.
The "purr" makes me a bit nervous. What could be the cause and should I be
concerned. I often leave the radio on for hours unattended if I think I'm
coming back soon. Sometimes it gets to be over night.

Thanks for any thoughts.
P.S. Oh yes, on the power supply, might it be a good idea to fuse more
lines than just the AC input? I'd feel safer.

Thanks again and 73, DE Howard, WA9RYF

[drakelist] The Drake on AM, was: Which brings up another problem....

2007-10-20 Thread Howard Traxler

"Howard Traxler" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterance to the drakelist gang
--
Is this not how the Drake is supposed to behave on AM? Some kind of
"carrier control" modulation; causes the carrier to come up when modulated.
I don't think (at least with the tube models) that the finals could handle
steady full-power carrier.

Gary, thanks for the tips. I wonder if I could write to you off-list for
some more specific steps to tune this thing up. I have just purchased a
signal generator off ebay. It's not here yet, but we'll see how good it is
soon.

This is the first time I've tried something like this and I'd appreciate
some help.

Thanks.

Thanks Peter and Gary.

Now that you mention it, I remember the crystal socket on the side of the
R-4A. Ya know, the holes I found there are probably still the crystal
socket; however, the switch is not there--or maybe the handle is broken off.
Probably not a mod at all. I'll have to open it up and check it out.

The switch on the side of the TR-4 doesn't seem to have any effect. I
patched the two RCA jacks over to the receiver and got it working a little;
certainly not as hot as the receiver on the TR-4. Can't get it to un-mute.
I think the R-4A needs a tune-up and maybe some tubes.

I feel bad for the guy who sold it to me. He thinks it's working GREAT! hi
hi.

Off to work now but I'll play more tonight.
Thanks again.

For Peter Bent: How much would a T-4XC be worth? I bought a whole C line
station recently but don't really like the R-4C as well as the R-4A I had
for many years. So I bought an R-4A and I'll be looking for a T-4X (like I
once had) and probably selling off this C line piece by piece. Kind of
depends on how well this R-4A works and if I can find the older transmitter.

Hi all, I know this is not a "for sale" list, but maybe you won't mind if I
list a need:

I'd like to get my R-4C on 160 meters, so wondering Does anyone have an
appropriate crystal? Also the three segments that for ten meters that are
not furnished with the receiver. Also looking for CW filters for the same
radio.
I'm a user, not a collector; so all they have to be is working.

Thanks.
