Joe
I don't know what happened to WB4HFN. I've tried to contact him with no
success.

The screws for my TR-3 are black slot-head. I think they are 6-32, but I'd
have to double-check the size. I suspect these are the same screws used on
the 4-series and would be interested if someone could correct me. Someone
is selling what is supposed to be replacements for these, but the photos
show them as philips-head. No sense in paying shipping on the wrong screws,
so I just went down to the local hardware store and got the closest match
that I could find. They are the same color, size and length, but the head
is slightly smaller and takes an allen-wrench. I'd actually prefer to have
something different than a slot-head screw. It is really easy to grab the
wrong screw when you are disassembling the cabinet and accidentally snap the
head off one of the trim pots.

Rich - KE1EV

I know this might sound overly simple, but if you go to a hardware store
that has lamp parts in the "cardboard drawers", you might find it. I found
a knurled connector nut for my 1930's Signal key, and I was amazed...right
there in the hardware store

Hi Jim,

Each & every time I hear that story,I am just SO grateful &
appreciative of the fact that I built my own amplifier here a number of
years back...

It uses a pair of venerable, but "...old fashioned", 813 tubes --- I picked
up three of them for (I'm blushing now) ten bucks some 17 years ago...

Last year a buddy of mine gave me a box full of them (brand new, and used,
both) for nothing!

I think I'll stick to being old-fashioned, after all, Hi Hi.

RE: [drakelist] Tuning Knobs

2007-10-17 Thread James B Davis
Terry,

I am going to leave this for someone else to address. I am sorry you have
had problems. You will get a good answer from some of the guys that know
something about this, as I don't.

73, Jim

NW5F

Hi Jim!

The central 'spinners' (inserts) for the standard R-4B knob have a raised
edge to them, (hence 'dished'), unlike those of the (I think) R-4C and the
Collins 'S' line series, which are dead flat.. Replacement spinners for
those are available, and I have used them on my KWM-2A, etc . So many of
the Drake 4 series seem to have scratched inserts and it would be nice to be
able to complete a restoration by replacing them. I'd have thought there
would be suffcient demand for someone to tool up and manufacture
replacements, if these are not othewise available.

I hope you are having fun with your Drake gear. I am focussing on the 'B'
line. Many years ago I ordered a 4B via an English company, and it was a
darned long time coming. When it did eventually arrive it was an early
production 4C! Basically a excellent receiver, but quite a shock to
discover that I needed to purchase additional filters, etc. I never did, as
my main interest back then was two meter SSB (I was living at my parents'
place and had lost my HF antenna!) and I used the 4C as the heart of a solid
state 2m SSB transverter/transceiver home brew set up. So I guess my new
interest in the 4B line is pure nostalgia!

All the best,

Terry G3VFO

RE: [drakelist] Head Phones

2007-10-15 Thread James B Davis
Al, thank you very much for your comments. They are worth considering for
sure.

Jim/NW5F

Subject: Re: [drakelist] Head Phones

Headphones are headphones, it's not rocket science. Even a cheap $10 pair
should work better than using a speaker for what you want and need to do.
Probably the most important part of buying a set of headphones is the fit
and comfort. If they don't fit your head or aren't comfortable for wearing
a long time don't buy them. Some can fit very tight and will squeeze your
head way too much and others will be loose and won't want to stay in place.
The ones that fit around the ear like a cup will probably suit your needs
best because they will cut out external noise and make it easier to hear
what you want to hear. The last thing to look at is the cord. You will
want a cord long enough to reach where you need it to but not so long it's
going to get in the way. Some cords are coiled 17 - 20 feet long and can
get in the way or pull on your head when you move. Others are not coiled
and can easily be cut to the needed length. The last thing to look at if
you are buying expensive ones is the availability and cost of replacement
pads. The pads can wear out and need replacement so make sure what you buy
you will be able to get pads for in 5 - 10 years. Before you buy new
headphones be sure you can return them should you find out they are not
right for you.

Many of the outboard audio DSP units have a place to plug in an external
speaker or headset. I have the ClearSpeech mobile speaker and was able to
mount it in my Yaesu external speaker enclosure. You should be able to do
the same with the Drake external speakers. I wired mine so it used the
external speaker and jack of the Yaesu speaker. This way I can plug my
headphones into it without any problems.

In addition to head phones you might consider getttin something similar to
the MFJ-616 Speech Intelligibility Enhancer. I have heard some positive
comments from others, have never tried one but am considering. The concept
seems reasonable an there may be other suppliers doing the same thing. You
can check out the unit at

Hi Jim

I have, as part of the Drake collection here, an RV-4C in very nice
condition, and works fine. I also have, for the TR-4C I have it sitting
with, an MS-4 speaker so I have a speaker option. I have found I don't use
the 2nd VFO very often.

I am not sure what you are looking for exactly, specifically condition and
desired price range, so let me know what you are hoping to find, and what I
have might work for you.

I don't have any current detailed pictures, but could do that easily enough,
and send them via email for your perusal.

With the number of radios I have here that will work 'split', the main
reason I would use it, I think this is probably expendable. I just got a
pair of 'B' line twins that I am focusing on now, you I am sure you know how
that goes!

Any interest?

Ok, guys. The Oklahoma bill has nothing to do with homeowners associations
(HOA's). It
simply says that municipalities have to obey federal regulations (PRB-1).
The ONLY thing
this might do is allow a state court suit if a municipality tries to
prohibit antennas or
(reasonable) towers (usually considered 40-45 feet).

State court suits are a WHOLE lot cheaper than federal court lawsuits.
However, if you file
one, don't be surprised to hear a scream of "federal preemption" by the
defendant town, and
see a removal (transfer) to federal court anyway.

Frankly, state PRB-1 legislation means very little. The federal rule is
that governmental
entities (towns, counties, parrishes and states) have to obey federal law,
but the law is that
PRB-1 applys ONLY to governmental entities, not private agreements like HOA
rules and
CC&R's.

I wish it weren't so (in this case), but it is.

You can all calm down now.

Sorry!

Jack,

There is so much that COULD be said about this subject that I could open up
another bag of worms and get myself booted OFF this Drakelist. I have lived
a LOT of years and been at the helm of a lot of things in business, and the
attitude of some of these people that like to rant and rave with their newly
found degrees, and get into one of the starter neighborhoods and want to
exercise authority, keep their grass cut and edged and that seems to do
something for their ego. All you have to do is put out news that certain
people can debate and you have a problem on your hands. I'll get mail most
likely from someone that will give a lot of thought to my comments to you
and they will want to blister me. Jack I've lived 75 years now and I have
been through a lot in my life and these are small people with visions of
grandeur.

I don't think there will be court challenges because it would have to be on
the basis of an Association doing the challenge and they don't have the
funds for some lawyer to make any money off of it. The individual officers
don't have the money to take it to court either. There are a few hams who
aren't as redneck as I am that won't put up a tower and beam just to be nice
to a neighbor. I have already told all my neighbors to look for a tower and
beam to go up at my QTH because I can do it within the law now. The attitude
from them was "we could care less". I am not worried about any challenge.

You never know, just keep a look out for one and maybe one will turn that
wont cost an arm and a leg. I bought mine a few years ago and I dont
remember what it cost but I am certain it was under $100. It was in the

Don,

Nice to hear from you. Well had I been trying to buy gear maybe from places
like you have near me and had known about these items for sale I could have
bid on them. I did go up to Bartlesville several months ago and purchase a
TR-4C from a guy and it was to have been in class A condition, it was about
a 6 on the scale of 1 to 10. I had Ron Baker work it over and now it is a
10. Mainly Don there aren't any HAM stores around Tulsa anymore that I know
of, at least you could make it to Dallas from where you live pretty easily.
I only have the 4 line gear. Don I love that antenna of yours you show on

I beg to differ with you, Jim, there is LOTS of amateur radio in Oklahoma,
hi hi. I have a house full of Drake and Collins gear, and bought the last
and very nice Collins S3 Line I have in Claremore, OK, home town of Will
Rogers, (right near you) just a couple of years ago!! You just have to
watch QTH.com, QRZ.com and the other lists. A lot of my Drake gear was
bought in Oklahoma and Texas, within driving distance. No MS-8, or I'd be
tempted to sell it to you, hi. I didn't like the MS-7's I had, and sold
them quickly, but do very much like the MS-4 speaker. Wish Radio Shack
still sold that "universal" replacement I used to buy to put in them!!

I have even thought of making a cabinet the size of the MS-8 and install a
speaker in it and making it to look like the pictures of the MS-8 I have

resembles Amateur Radio of any kind. It is difficult to find equipment. I
got all my radios from Ron Baker, in Derry NH except for one set of twins.

There was an MS-7 for about $145 recently as well. Even the MS-4 has
gone for over $100. But there are more reasonable ones, even on EBay.
I paid $65 for an MS-8 recently.

It's just too bad more "original" owners didn't buy speakers when they
bought the radios. There just ain't a speaker for every radio.

I have all three as well. The MS-4 is a 5 x 7 speaker and the other two
are 4" speakers. I really don't see the MS-8 as being so terrible, but
it's not going to replace my Vandersteens! I'm 95% CW, so resonant
peaks can be a GOOD thing.

I do use both the internal and the external speakers in the R-8A.

RE: [drakelist] MS8 Speaker

2007-09-04 Thread James B Davis
Evan,

You probably have the best solid thought about these speakers. I do have an
advantage over a lot of guys in as much as my hearing is in SAD condition
and I may not detect anything of a negative nature out of the MS-8. I am
very bad about wanting things to match and be symmetrical when it is
assembled and ready for use. The appearance of a lot of things I have is my
hang-up, it can be a real pain to deal with at times. I was never able to
shake off the desire to have Drake equipment from way back in 1967 when I
got my first set of twins. In my opinion, it would be very difficult for me
to find ANY rig that would please me as much as the Drakes do.

I believe the MS-8 speaker followed the pattern established by the MS-7 ; -
) That's why I sold the 7-8 MS-7s I had and now use exclusively the MS-4.
But to each their own and what is preferred by one might be shunned by
another. Let's all enjoy the Drake gear to our own particular preferences!

What does help the MS-7 though, is to get a replacement speaker for the
TR-7, mount it in the MS-7 cabinet, and insert acoustical foam inside the
cabinet.

David,

Thank you very much for the comments about the MS-8. May I ask you this
question please. In your opinion why would the MS-8 be an inferior sounding
speaker ? Would it be because of the case it is in ? The area that the sound
is being squeezed down into. I think the MS-4 has a 4" speaker but a larger
cabinet and maybe that is why it sounds better. Also the R8 is fairly scarce
and I think the MS-8 would look great setting next to my R8. I have four
Drake rigs, the R-4A, T-4X.R-4C, T-4XC, and two TR-4C's and all the rigs
have their own speakers, also the MN-2000 and a MN-4. I thought I would be
really complete if I had the MS-8. I will take your advice and use both if I
am ever able to get a MS-8.

Thank You,

Jim/NW5F

Years ago I attended a lot of furniture auctions in the role of a
"picker"..the
dealers told me what they were willing to pay for a piece, and if I found
it, I
bought it for them.

They never had to attend an auction and put up with it, and I made a few
bucks
for my troubles. Perhaps someone on the list that frequents Ebay could act
in
your behalf.

Garey,

Thank you for the reply. I guess for those of us that won't give up Drake we
will have to suffer and pay the price. If we want something like the MS-8
the price you paid would be alright. I just don't play with ebay at all.
Maybe someone will come along that has one of these speakers they will sell.

Jim

Jim -

The "hard part" is the "reasonable price"! I got one from E-Bay for
$65 a month or so ago. The MS-7 seems to sell for about TWICE that. I
just wish Ham's weren't so cheap! and had ALWAYS bought a matching
speaker every time they bought a new receiver. NEW receiver? What am I
saying. :-)

Does anyone know where subject speaker could be obtained at a reasonable
price ? I have an R8 receiver that would look good with the matching speaker

FYI RON, I received you email in good shape.

Jim/NW5F

All, some of you may know that I do refurbishing work on vintage Drake &
Collins equipment. Actually I have been doing this since the mid 1970's.
Several ham has asked me to put together an article on my refurbishing
process. While on vacation this week I finally finished that article. It is
now available with lots of pictures. Take a look if you have interest.
