RE: [drakelist] MS8 Speaker
James B Davis [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- David, Thank you very much for the comments about the MS-8. May I ask you this question please. In your opinion why would the MS-8 be an inferior sounding speaker ? Would it be because of the case it is in ? The area that the sound is being squeezed down into. I think the MS-4 has a 4 speaker but a larger cabinet and maybe that is why it sounds better. Also the R8 is fairly scarce and I think the MS-8 would look great setting next to my R8. I have four Drake rigs, the R-4A, T-4X.R-4C, T-4XC, and two TR-4C's and all the rigs have their own speakers, also the MN-2000 and a MN-4. I thought I would be really complete if I had the MS-8. I will take your advice and use both if I am ever able to get a MS-8. RE: [drakelist] MS8 Speaker
Evan, You probably have the best solid thought about these speakers. I do have an advantage over a lot of guys in as much as my hearing is in SAD condition and I may not detect anything of a negative nature out of the MS-8. I am very bad about wanting things to match and be symmetrical when it is assembled and ready for use. The appearance of a lot of things I have is my hang-up, it can be a real pain to deal with at times. I was never able to shake off the desire to have Drake equipment from way back in 1967 when I got my first set of twins. In my opinion, it would be very difficult for me to find ANY rig that would please me as much as the Drakes do. David Chris Drake [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Jim, Well, to me yes, too much to pay for a not so good speaker for general SW listening. I would say, however, if you are using the R8 for ham reception, its not that bad. I guess they go for that much because there ain't many of them out there. Ebay is not the only source for equipment. Try looking to many of the ham only sale listings you find on-line as well. Check on QRZ.com and others. A lot of guys shun ebay and list their items for sale elsewhere. RE: [drakelist] MS8 Speaker
David Chris Drake [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Jim, I think Evan hit the nail on the head in a previous post. Why Drake did what they did with the MS7 and MS8, I don't know. I too have some hearing difficulties, and wear hearing aids. I will tell you that the MS 4, being bigger and in a bigger box, does sound way better than either of the aforementioned speakers. Another thing I have experienced is with the RV4C speaker. Not sure why, but it sounds excellent. I use it exclusively with my TR4C. I've not researched it, but there must be something about the speaker manufacture that tells the story. All I can say, is...my TR4C is only hooked up to the RV4C speaker, and the TR7A is hooked up to a MS4. Both sound great, with or without hearing aids inserted ! Maybe some experimentation with replacement speakers as Evan suggested, as well as some foam, or even enclosing the back would improve things, so for completeness, if you want an MS8, find one at a good price and do some tinkering. That's what us hams do you know !! I, myself purchased a brand new R8 when they came out and then, contrary to opinion,... and because I'm a bit hardheaded, ..ordered the MS8. Well the opinions were right,...and it was not a very good speaker. I sent it back to Universal Radio for credit. An MS4 sounds much better and thats what I used for the time I owned mine. Even better for broadcast listening is a powered computer speaker. In addition, the internal speaker sounds pretty darn good. OK, having said all that, it would be nice, from a collector point of view, to have the infamous MS8 sitting next to the world beater R8 or its able successors the R8A and R8B. Hope you find one!! But if you do, use both the MS8 and the internal speaker together for best results. Down here in Oklahoma around Tulsa where I live we have NOTHING that resembles Amateur Radio of any kind. It is difficult to find equipment. I got all my radios from Ron Baker, in Derry NH except for one set of twins. Jim/NW5F Garey Barrell [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- There was an MS-7 for about $145 recently as well. Even the MS-4 has gone for over $100. But there are more reasonable ones, even on EBay. I paid $65 for an MS-8 recently. It's just too bad more original owners didn't buy speakers when they bought the radios. There just ain't a speaker for every radio. Garey Barrell [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Yes, the Palstar looks very much like the MS-8. EXCEPT, the Palstar cutouts are vertical while the MS-8's are horizontal. Clever those Ohioans. I don't think Drake has any cabinet manufacturing capabilities though. I spoke with the owner of Palstar last year asking him the same question. Unfortunately I don't have the e-mails as my hard drive crashed earlier this year and of course no backups. Anyway, the speaker that is inside the Palstar cabinet is their product but the cabinet and I think the silk-screening of the cabinet (or is it the other way around?) is actually made by Drake. And he indicated that Drake does some other work for Palstar as well. So in a tiny way, Drake is still in the ham radio business!!?! James B Davis [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Don, Nice to hear from you. Well had I been trying to buy gear maybe from places like you have near me and had known about these items for sale I could have bid on them. I did go up to Bartlesville several months ago and purchase a TR-4C from a guy and it was to have been in class A condition, it was about a 6 on the scale of 1 to 10. I had Ron Baker work it over and now it is a 10. Mainly Don there aren't any HAM stores around Tulsa anymore that I know of, at least you could make it to Dallas from where you live pretty easily. I only have the 4 line gear. Don I love that antenna of yours you show on QRZ. I have a house full of Drake and Collins gear, and bought the last and very nice Collins S3 Line I have in Claremore, OK, home town of Will Rogers, (right near you) just a couple of years ago!! You just have to watch QTH.com, QRZ.com and the other lists. A lot of my Drake gear was bought in Oklahoma and Texas, within driving distance. No MS-8, or I'd be tempted to sell it to you, hi. I didn't like the MS-7's I had, and sold them quickly, but do very much like the MS-4 speaker. Wish Radio Shack still sold that universal replacement I used to buy to put in them!! 73, Don, WB5HAK -- Submissions:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Unsubscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - unsubscribe drakelist in body Hopelessly Lost:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - help in body of message Zerobeat Web Page: www.zerobeat.net - sponsored by www.tlchost.net -- -- Submissions:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Unsubscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - unsubscribe drakelist in body Hopelessly Lost:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - help in body of message Zerobeat Web Page: www.zerobeat.net - sponsored by www.tlchost.net --

Years ago I attended a lot of furniture auctions in the role of a picker..the dealers told me what they were willing to pay for a piece, and if I found it, I bought it for them. They never had to attend an auction and put up with it, and I made a few bucks for my troubles.
