[DX-CHAT] ZK2C - OQRS
I really believe that the OQRS system is a real benefit for getting QSL's from major DXpeditions. I am sure it is much easier for the DXped QSL managers and provides a small donation to the group . It has worked very well for me on all previous DXped's. It is, however, only as good as the manager's running the program. I had been told that the ZK2C OQRS cards came out quite a while ago, but I had received nothing here. I have the receipt number from PayPal so I know they got my funds and request. I finally sent an email to DL7JAN and he said his records indicated he had sent mine, but he would send another. After many weeks of waiting and not receiving anything, I sent another email and he answered that he was pretty sure he had sent it. I waited additional weeks and still nothing came. My last 2 emails have been ignored. Has anyone had a similar experience on OQRS for this operation?? I guess another option would be to contact PayPal and tell them I received nothing for the fee that I paid. Not sure what that would accomplish other than letting them know that this person doesn't deliver on what he has been paid for. I am out over $4 USD now and got nothing. [DX-CHAT] ST0R-LOTW
Gentlemen, I hope I didn't light this flame a week or so with my request for info re ST0R and LOTW. My apologies if I am guilty. This worn out thread needs to be buried. Please read what Ryan said in his email (below) as he is right on the mark. Most DXpeditions are not going to instantly put their logs on LOTW and shouldn't be expected to do so. They have substantial costs to try and recover, and we should help them do it or DXpeditions are going to disappear. I doubt very much that anyone is making money by doing a DXpedition, and are frequently exposing themselves to personal safety and health risks. Be kind and considerate to the guys who take these risks to put a QSO in your log. John Owens - N7TK Celebrating over 50 Years in Ham Radio No. 1 Honor Roll Are you sure they did it? Their webpage says this: Donors and Sponsors will receive LoTW CFMs after the DXped ends. http://www.tx7m.com/sponsors.php Maybe they changed their minds afterwards but the initial expectation was that LoTW was a perk of donating. It is apparent that some don't realize the massive costs of a major DXpedition. It's not simply two guys taking a boat with a rig and a wire antenna. Some of these operations cost tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. And with that cost, there must be a means of recouping some of it. I have no problem with tossing a few bucks in the tip jar if I get a new one. Bureau is and likely will always be free. Many of them upload to LoTW after 1-2 years after the expedition ends anyway. But to expect everyone to spend tens or hundreds of thousands and then not expect to recoup some of those costs is just silly. 73 Ryan, N2RJ --- To unsubscribe or subscribe to this list. [DX-CHAT] Antenna Analyzer
I need an antenna analyzer that provides impedance information. I have the predecesor to the MFJ-259B, and have been disappointed in it when the frequency of interest is near the band overlap areas of the various range segments. Works great mid range in those bands, but becomes unreliable near the edges of each band, and the overlap is not always sufficient to give reliable readings. I am considering the 259B, but fear the same kind of problems. Is there another instrument ouit there that isdesigned for ham radio, and not terribly expensive that you have experience with and feel is better than the 259B? Your response will be apprecaited. Re: [DX-CHAT] working DXCC on CW
Jim: Enjoyed reading about your CW rebirth experiences. I have had similar ones. At 70YO now, I have been licensed since 1958. Originally, after getting my General Ticket in 1959, I preferred CW and got pretty good at it. Family and Career got in the way and I became inactive from 1963 until 2002 when I got back into the hobby with a good, modern station. I renewed my quest for DX. When they dropped the higher speed code speed in 2003 which grandfathered my General code proficiency to the Extra Class ticket, I took and passed the written exam. My CW proficiency was very poor at first, but I wanted to use the new 25Kc segments I now had at the bottom the popular bands. I bought a Morsematic keyer and awkwardely put my call sign in one memory location, and 599, TU in the other. I called it my 2 finger QSO. Over time, my CW ear got better and my CW fist improved so that I no longer do 2 finger QSO's. My operating speed is now around 25-30 WPM solid and I avoid SSB operations almost entirely. CW is now my preferred mode of operation. I love this mode and am glad circumstances forced me back into it. Thanks for sharing your experiences. John Owens - N7TK - Original Message - From: Jim Abercrombie 4...@prtcnet.com To: dx-chat@njdxa.org Sent: Monday, April 20, 2009 10:24:07 AM GMT -08:00 US/Canada Pacific Subject: [DX-CHAT] working DXCC on CW Saw where Ron notarius got his 15 meter DXCC. Thought I would share my experience on working CW DXCC. I was able to copy 20 wpm on paper in 1968 when I took my Extra and had to pass a 20 wpm sending test with a straight key, but gave up on CW after that. Last year I thought it was time for me to become a real DX'er by getting my CW DXCC. I have a Vibroplex paddle and a built-in keyer in my radio, but I can't send worth a darn with it at over 15 WPM (too old, no dexterity). So I have 3 CW memory slots in my radio and I programmed each one for a qso exchange, and I can set the CW speed with my radio. In my head I can copy my call and my report to at least 45 WPM and that's all I need to make a contact. The other day, VK9GMW copied my call, sent me my call and 5nn and he was S-0 on my radio. I wasn't sure I got him because he was ripping the code out so fast and he was so weak, but that contact was in his log. Making contacts this way has increased my code receiving speed, but I still can't send with the paddle. I am posting this info to maybe encourage someone to try CW regardless of their code ability. Re: [DX-CHAT] A5100A
Zack: This op has a similar situation to the just concluded VU7 op. During the hours that HAMCAP said it was a possibility, they were on other bands. Mostly they seemed focused on 40, 80, and 160M, which means they were focused on EU, and not NA or SA. I even tried email to see if I could get them on 20M CW, and even though VU7SJ tried on a couple of nights, I never even heard them then or on any band or mode in the 2 weeks they were there. I have good antennas at 25m and good equipment. The only cluster spots I saw on them was from the East Coast NA. They were very few, had comments about weak signals, and didn't last long. HAMCAP says NA from my area (Pacific Northwest) should have its best chance for A5 around their sunset which is around 0z. and it says I should be able to work them SP on 17M and 20M around that time. So far, I have not seen them on those bands at that time. I hope one of theirs reads DX Chat and realizes this and changes the band/mod strategy on a few days jusgt to give NA W coast a chance.. I have a friend who has 300+ confirmed and needs this for a new one. A5 cluster spots are very rare here. I wish him luck. He had the same experience from his QTH in Dallas, TX with the VU7. I did read the A5100A website comments and they comment about difficult operating conditions and poor QSO rates. JOhn: I checked the list of sent QSL's on their website, and neither your call or mine is listed. They haven't updated the QSL status comment in about 1 month, but at that time they had sent to 11,363 stations out of the 38,502 that are in the log (I assume that to mean those that are requesting QSL cards). Re: [DX-CHAT] Radio Procedure-on phone
As I look at the calendar, I find myself celebrating the 50th anniversary of my first ham license. Hopefully that qualifies me to participate in this thread about MisQ's. I haven't heard anyone use QSL in lieu of Over, but I don't spend that much time on phone. The hobby needs new blood, so if we end up inheriting some old CBer's, welcome them on board and help them transition to the norms of this hobby. Without new blood, our numbers will dwindle to where the FCC will just farm out our spectrum. I do cringe a bit over terms like 10-4 good buddy, got your ears on, and I hear that. These will hopefully dissolve away over time. I would gladly tolerate the MisQ's if I could exchange them for removal of the frequency cops (up, up, up, up - one is enough), tuner upper's, or deliberate QRMer's who always know exactly where the good DXpedition operating frequencies are. It is like I am like trying to adapt to like changes that occur in our language like over time, if you get what I mean. This is still the greatest hobby out there, and it has been very good to me. I wish I could look forward to another 50 years, but that is unlikely. Stay tuned! Personally hearing QSL instead of over doesn't bother me in the slightest, especially if the QSO is with someone who doesn't speak English very well. The more of an impediment the language barrier is the more inclined I am to follow the other op's lead; if he turns it over to me with QSL? I will use that with him if there's any doubt and if condx are marginal, etc. For stateside-to-stateside or between native English-speakers (from anywhere), I think it's silly, but to each their own. On local repeaters, though, it does grate on me, as does most other lingo when both sides are full-quieting and in-range of the repeater. [DX-CHAT] Re: [DX-NEWS] Re: Kosova
Jim: Now we have to hear from the ARRL DXCC folks on their position on this. An article I read on this said that licenses would be officially available for issue from April 14 on, so that might mean that any operatiion using the E7 call will not be official until after that date?? ARRL DXCC needs to state their position. John Owens - N7TK -- Original message -- From: Jim Reisert AD1C [EMAIL PROTECTED] From the CQ Newsroom... Kosovo Added to CQ DX Awards Country List Effective 2/17/08 (Hicksville, NY) March 21, 2008 -- Kosovo is being added to the list of countries and territories recognized for CQ DX awards, effective immediately, CQ DX Awards Manager Billy Williams, N4UF, announced today. Verifications for contacts made on or after February 17, 2008 are acceptable for CQ DX Award credit. CQ DX Honor Roll members with 335 or more credits should update by May 31st for highest placement in Honor Roll listings. The new 339 entity maximum will appear on CQ DX Honor Rolls to be prepared in early June. CQ DX Honor Roll listings prepared in early April will be based on a 338 maximum count. All Kosovo contacts will count for field KN on applications for the CQ DX Field Award. Kosovo's status has been the subject of some controversy in the amateur radio community as well as the world community, as the ARRL declared that special operations from there on February 17 will count as Serbia, not Kosovo, in terms of DXCC credit. The United States and many European countries immediately recognized Kosovo's independence. However, Russia and China are opposed to it and Russia has threatened to veto any U.N. action to recognize Kosovo as an independent nation. We are aware that the ARRL has not yet added Kosovo to the DXCC list, explained CQ magazine Editor Rich Moseson, W2VU. The League says it is waiting for Kosovo to become a member state of the United Nations or be issued a callsign block by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), a U.N. agency. However, because of geopolitical issues far beyond the realm of amateur radio, it is unlikely that the United Nations or the ITU will act on Kosovo in the near future, even though the United States and many other countries have granted it recognition. Because it is CQ's policy to grant credit for contacts with 'new' entities as of the date that their status changes, Moseson continued, we have decided not to wait for U.N. action, but to follow the lead of the United States and other countries that have recognized Kosovo's independence, and to grant credit for contacts made with stations in Kosovo as of its independence day, February 17, 2008. (NOTE: This action does not affect the country list for the CQ WW DX Contest. Re: [DX-CHAT] on line logs
Todd: Online logs preceeded K7C by quite a bit. They are the first op that posted real-time listing of your call when they were or had just worked you. That is on-line logs on steroids. The more they give us, the more be expect everyone to do it and are disturbed when they don't do it quite the way we want them to. The Clipperton gang limped back onto their boat a tired and beaten group of people. They suffered quite a bit. Can't we just cut them a little slack and let them do things when they have time to do them. If you are not in the log, there is no way of now trying to repeat a contact. Not all apparent contacts end up in the log. There is way too much wasted bandwidth on this topic. -- Original message -- From: Todd Ruby [EMAIL PROTECTED] Uh, on line logs were pretty much non existent before the last Kure Is Dxpedition, K7C. Maybe I am a little off but not by much. my point is that it is a fairly new feature that is a luxury a lot of people seem to think is compulsory of the DXpedition to provide. Hey it is nice to see if your Q's are in the log but what did you do 5+ years ago? Send in your card and hope for the best. Otherwise just wait until they post it and have fun with ham radio in the meantime. 73 de todd WB2ZAB Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-chat To post a message, DX related items only, dx-chat@njdxa.org This is the DX-CHAT reflector sponsored by the NJDXA http://njdxa.org Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-chat To post a message, DX related items only, dx-chat@njdxa.org This is the DX-CHAT reflector sponsored by the NJDXA http://njdxa.org
RE: [DX-CHAT] Directional CQs
Ron: Well, Chuck wanted to stir us and things up again, and we gladly accomodated him. The last time I checked, about half of the licensed hams are in JA land so Asia should be the main continent to aim directional CQ's at if they are in fact needing the country. I am sure the TX5 folks had the benefits of information from previous operations (FO0AAA, etc.) and the results of recent Needed lists to know where the needs are. What Chuck was critical of is exactly what they should do prior to and during an op. Know where the needs are, and try and help them out. Forget the dudes that are just trying to rack up band/mode slots. I know from experience, that they frequently only have short openings to certain continents, and that is when they have to limit their calls to them. The time might not match your needy time, but that is how things have to be done. I also know for a fact that they could always hear NA. After all, Clipperton is just off the coast of So Cal. Californian's could probably have worked them on 2M. And to the people who are openly critical of how or when they are doing things, or about the greatly shortened op, just be fair and really put yourself in their shoes. Few do. Look at how long it took under their poor circumstrances to just get the op started in the first place. I am sure they looked at the best and Worst case scenarios of what operating in that environment would be like, and unfortunately it was the Worst Case x 10. They made the best of a bad situation and hung in there longer than most of the critics would have. Repeated rain squalls, high winds, lightning and intense heat plagued them and caused the operation to be curtailed earlier than expected. Add to that the pesky and relentless crabs that abound on Clipperton that just won't go away, and tell me how you would have handled it. I think they gave us their best shot and ran the operation as well as we can fairly expect. Put a few extra bucks in the envelope. They deserve it. Another point that is beat to death is the issue of calling by the numbers. At any given time, you are going to be hearing certain areas best, and if you don't periodically go by the numbers, you are only going to be working stations from those areas since that is who you are hearing over eveyone else. Also, from a US standpoint, calling for 6's means you are listening for CA. Calling for 7's means you are listening for 6 states and that ought to keep that in mind when calling by the numbers. See what you stirred up Chuck (NPI). I suspect a grin. John Owens - N7TK -- Original message -- From: Ron Notarius W3WN [EMAIL PROTECTED] I would say that at the moment, NA and EU contain the largest concentrations of active DX'ers. And when considering that the last two Pacific DXpeditions -- specifically, VP6DX Ducie and TX5C Clipperton -- basically had to shoot OVER NA to get to EU, AF AS... directional CQ's become a little more understandable. Is it entirely, 100% fair? No. But what is? There are many other factors involved than the ones Charles cites. TX5C, for one, stated that there would be a concentration on EU because of demand. I'm sure I'm not the only DX'er who sat in front of the radio, early to late evenings, hearing TX5C booming 599+40 on 80 40 meter CW, but unable to call because of those two simple letters, EU. But, so what? The bottom line is, as always, that the DXpedition fronts the funds, does the dirty work, arranges the shipping and transportation -- in short, takes the risks -- and as such, determines who how where they will call. That's the way the game is played. To be honest, I'm not going to sit here and gripe about the TX5C gang. Sure, I'd love to have worked them on more than one band, but I'm happy that I finally got them late Friday night on 30 -- and I almost missed that chance, too (no, the dog didn't eat my coax -- again. But I did have to take the wife in to the ER due to bronchitis; if they'd had to admit her, instead of sending her home to recover...). In many ways, this DXpedition was snake-bit, especially weather wise. To do as well as they did, with the weather-related delays and disasters they had to deal with, is commendable to them. To second guess their (or anyone else's) decisions on who to work and such is very close to being uncalled for. And frankly, I think if there were some penalties for the chronic morons who constantly call out of turn, on top of other people, on top of the DX, and call call call... a few of them might learn. Not many, but a few. And it's the chronic morons we have to worry about, along with the UP police and the like... not those who inadvertently make a mistake or give in to a moment's frustration. I've never heard of anyone guilty of a momentary lapse being put on a secret naughty list... though I wish a few of the chronics might make them! 73 -Original
RE: [DX-CHAT] Re: Card Checkers
Don: That is not quite true. My last submittal was what they call a Hybrid submittal consisting of a few LOTW credits added to the main part of the submittal which is 92 QSO's that were field checked. My field checked paperwork was mailed within a couple of days of when they were field checked and when I applied for the partial LOTW credits, and I sit in the same queue that everyone else is in. That submittal was logged in on Dec 27, 2007 and is still waiting to be processed. Per their website, they are now processing applications that were logged in during the week of Dec 7, 2007 so I still have about 3 weeks to go. Re: [DX-CHAT] Re: Card Checkers
David: You would think so. Given the large backlog lately, I made a very friendly suggestion to Bill Moore that they sort the submittals into 2 piles (Field Checked and Physical Cards), and have the bulk of their effort directed at Physical Card submittals. My belief was that the time required to unbundle a wad of cards, sort them into groups, physically review each card, enter the credit info, and then put that cards back into a bundle and send them on back to the sender requires quite a bit more time than entering the credit info from a field card check list. Even with a smaller effort, I would think that field checked card submittals would move along very quickly, and the backlog reduced more quickly. My suggestion was ignored. Re: [DX-CHAT] Re: Card Checkers
One aspect of the problem hasn't been discussed before that I know of. A lot of the aps are people who were at the Top of the Honor Roll who are simply submitting an ap to cover a new entity that came along (FJ, etc.) and they want to get back on top. These aps are 1 or 2 cards at the most. Once a person reaches that pinnacle, I think it is fair that they get special consideration in how fast their ap is processed. I wouldn't mind being passed in the queue for this type of situation. That position of recognition is an honored position in our DXCC program and warrants special consideration. No, I am not at the Top of the Honor Roll. John Owens - N7TK -- Original message -- From: J Dyer [EMAIL PROTECTED] Some of the grumbling has apparently worked its way upstream. I understand that a couple of more employees have now been assigned to checking cards at HQ. It will still take them a long time to work their way out of the hole. The optional Powwer Supply cooling fan on my Alpha 87A Amplifier (externally mounted on rear of cabinet) needs to be replaced. The normal thing to do would be to replace it with another of the same brand, size, ratings. It is an EBM PABST Model 4580Z, and they are still available from a few suppliers. It is disconnected now, and it is amazing how much quieter the amp is without this fan. I have had other owners tell me they don't have one installed for that reason. I have also had others tell me then have one installed, but have a switch so that they can have it off most of the time, but on for high duty cycle modes like RTTY. Has anyone found an equivalent blower of the same size that is quieter, but that still does the job?? Since ETO/Alpha didn't install one on the amp to begin with, its need must be marginal. They advertise full time key down operation at 1500 watts so you have to wonder why it is needed in the first place. Your help and information would be appreciated. Re: [DX-CHAT] VP6DX Log-Dupes
Mike: I am not sure it is correct to make that assumption about dupe contacts. If you have an ESP contact and the logs are not yet online, it is fairly normal to work them again (or for the first time?). Once the logs are online, dupes should not happen. Re: [DX-CHAT] DXpedition Expectations
Superbly stated! John Owens - N7TK -- Original message -- From: rfman45 [EMAIL PROTECTED] Many of the problems already cited in these current threads are certainly contributing factors in today's chaotic world of pileups. Civility in general in society is woefully missing and its absence is also felt on the bands. Another contributing factor, I believe, is the very high set of expectations that DXpeditions set for themselves through advance publicity announcements. The high hopes of planners is evident in the press releases, requests for information on needed band/modes, planning for favorable propagation and times to various areas of the world, real-time online logs, etc. They, and we, want the very best possible results. While I and all DXers wish all DXpeditioners the very best success, planners may well be painting themselves into a corner in an effort to put their efforts in the best favorable light. DXpeditions to difficult-to-reach spots and/or places with problematic governments are, by definition, outside of the normal course of things and many unexpected events can therefore more easily present themselves, derailing even the best laid plans. It's not difficult to activate Spain; Heard Island is another matter. I am as enthusiastic as any when an expedition is announced; I have nothing but respect for our fellow hams who devote themselves to my favorite aspect of operating. However, the combination of the anticipation of a rare place being QRV, the talk of needing this or that band and the final event of the station coming on the air makes for an explosive mix that finally ignites in the inevitable fracas of the resulting pileup. I'm definitely in favor of advance publicity and any necessary fundraising, assistance, etc. but planners must be careful not to raise expectations too high and we, in the pileups, have to act more reasonably in our conduct and in what we expect. Jim: There is nothing complicated about LOGGER32 with regard to exporting/importing files and logs. First, I would recommend you direct your question to the LOGGER32 reflector and I am sure Geoff or one of the other guys will help you with your problem. I have been using LOGGER32 for many years now and have never had a problem downloading to LOTW, or converting the logs to Cabrillo for submittal to contests. I responded to your previous question along these lines and never head back from you. I would recommend exporting a few of your log files to a save area and then inspect them. I sent you examples of what a log file in ADIF format should look like, so that you can check them to see if they look lilke they should. If you need another example of the ADIF log file format, I would be happy to supply it If you want to forward a couple of your ADIF log format files to me to look at, please do so. If your exported log ADIF files are in the correct ADIF format and content, then they should process by the LOTW s/w to create the .tq8 format file for input to LOTW. I am forwarding this response to the LOGGER32 reflector as a prelude to you getting help from them if needed. I definitely would hate to see you leave LOGGER32 over this. John Owens - N7TK -- Original message -- From: Greg - N4CC [EMAIL PROTECTED] JD1BMH had a nice signal on 80 meters this morning and a large NA pile-up. I listened to the JD and the pile-up and I'm getting more concerned about a habit that I see from many hams -- including some well known DX'ers. Regardless of what station the DX calls, almost everyone keeps calling. If a guy answers W9F? and your call is N4CCdon't transmit! (I used my call so I wouldn't offend anyone, but it applies to everyone.) Can we not exercise a bit of patience and courtesy on the bands any more? This practice seems especially bad in big pile-ups. I have never seen it help anyone get through, either. It just delays everyone while the DX asks for repeats because of the QRM. Let's do better in 2008. They had verbal permission. Written permission has be be obtained directly from the Ministry of PTT. In spite of numerous letters, the Ministry of PTT would not send the written documentation to back up their verbal permission. As far as I know, that is still the case. They did their operation in Sanaa, in plain sight and with the knowledge of the local chief of secret police who monitored their opertion and did not complain. They had substantial antenna systems installed which made it very obvious what was going on. It was 400 yards away from the HB9 and DL embassies. After 9 days of operation and 35K QSO's, they were asked to cease operation and leave the country which is what they did. No one was arrested and no equipment was confiscated. The beef is with the Ministry of PTT for failure to back up their verbal permission with the ARRL required documentation and until they do, it will not be recognized by DXCC. Per Hans, the operation was stopped because a ham radio group complained about it and caused its demise. They know who the people are. The DXpedition group is not to blame. They had every reason to believe that they had proper permission for the operation. The charge over the alleged misuse of the club callsign for the DXpedition is probably the most serious complaint. And, of course, nobody's perfect, so it may have been a true oversight on his part. I wondered about that myself. As you said, Fascinating! But... was a license issued, and if so, what call was on it? If FJ/OH2AM was on the license -- does that make the operation invalid? I'm sure that's one of the things the DXAC and DXCC desk will get to iron out, a task I don't envy them. I was under the impression that as a CEPT country, anyone from another CEPT country could just go there and operate. I could just go and operate as FJ/W9SZ. The main contention seems to be now about the callsign used after the FJ/. Having said that... I've got to tell you, gang, that this is one of a string of disturbing precedents that we've seen over the last few years. Sort of a DX'ing version of NIMBY. Recall all the complaints from the HP hams over the H8A trip a few years back, for one (specifically over the actual call on the license)? And there have been others along the same lines, which many of you know much more about than I ever will. I can't blame some of the resident FJ hams from feeling that their triumph got trumped, that their own plans to inaugurate the new entity in their own way got pulled out from under them. Under similar circumstances, I might feel the same way. But whatever happened (I ask rhetorically) to good sportsmanship? 73, ron w3wn So where are they? Re: [DX-CHAT] Cluster node for US spots of dx only?
I think all clusters allow you to set the filters you want in place. Not all clusters use the same software so the command syntax will be different between nodes. The node should be able to help you do this. GOOD logging software like the freeware LOGGER32 allow you to control this locally so that all spots come in from your node source, but are filtered according to your filter selections before being placed on the DX SPOTS page which is what you monitor. John Owens - N7TK -- Original message -- From: James Nipper [EMAIL PROTECTED] I have been away from dx-ing a while, and have not used the Dx Cluster system in several years.I would like to find a node that only shows spots made by U.S. stations. Are there any left that do this? Yes, I know that I could set filters, but for the moment that is not what I want. Yes, I know that some folks like to know when G-land can hear DL-land, but that doesn't interest me, so I see no need for the ten thousand spots per hour that don't pique my interest. RE: [DX-CHAT] 7O
Ron: All good information. You and Osten have a lot more info that I have been privy to. This all makes it obviious that it is not a clear cut situation on how to get properly licensed in Yemen first place, and then get the necessary documentaion to get DXCC certification. If it is difficult for a DXpedition to deal with, imagine how difficult it is for the ARRL to establish a clear cut, stable set of rules to follow in order to get operating licenses and permission, and then the necessary documentation to get DXCC cert. In cases like this, I think the DXCC rules situation has to have a fair amount of flexibility in its interpretation. Lets hope the G4HCL and other upcoming 7O ops are a bit more successful in this regard. That is why we are talking about this to help understand and aid the process. John Owens - N7TK -- Original message -- From: Ron Notarius W3WN [EMAIL PROTECTED] Well, I don't know about 7O7AA or 7O8AA (and yes, Osten, I do recall your email from back in March, obviously you have more information at your disposal than I do). Things may have changed after those licenses were issued, and especially after the two Yemens merged back into one country. Or the Aden Branch may have had the authority at one time and does not anymore. Or they overstepped their authority the first time or two and was approval from the Saana may have come retroactively, something they no longer wish to do. I could continue to speculate, but we may never know. As far as the documentation problem with 7O1YGF goes, remember two things: (1) The 7O1YGF team advertised quite often prior to the DXpedition that they had a license. Or at least that they had permission. This was re-iterated during and after the DXpedition... but the elusive license or permission to operate never appears to have either (a) been put on paper, and/or (b) been seen in the light of day by anyone outside of the DXpedition. (2) The 7O1YGF team has never submitted ANY documentation to the DXCC desk to have the operation approved for DXCC credit. Just some photos that were given to N7NG at Friedrichshafen. Let us all also bear in mind that this has happened before. There are more than a few operations by EU ops from Central America that have not been approved due to lack of documentation. It does make one wonder... And yes, I recall the story about Vlad too. Funny that they would tell him no license had ever been issued except the one to the Sultan of Kuwait, yet we know of licenses (or at least permission to operate -- same thing but technically not quite? Are they hair splitting?) that have been issued, such as 7O/OH2YY. So one wonders what the real story is... again, we may never know. 73 -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Osten B Magnusson Sent: Saturday, August 11, 2007 1:41 PM To: Zack Widup; dx-chat@njdxa.org Subject: Re: [DX-CHAT] 7O As far as I know the no good license for 7O1A was issued by the Aden Branch of The Yemen Telecom, and the head office in the capital Saana said that the Aden Branch was not authorized to issue licenses. Can the documentation problem for 7O1YGF be as simple as they also had authorization only from the Aden Branch? Vlad, UA4WHX, was in Saana in early 2005 but did not operate as he could not get a license - he told us that the ministry said that only one license had been issued, for The Sultan of Kuwait, but he never used it. [DX-CHAT] DXCC Yearbook
In looking back at past issues of the DXCC Yearbook, I find that the 1993 (my first year in it), the DXCC Listing was 19 pages long. The 2002 issue had 27 pages to the list. It is obvious that participation has grown quite a bit over the years, and you would think that ARRL DXCC would enjoy this and want to nurture it. DXCC Challenge is something new that they came up with and started promoting heavily around 2004. Its 12 pages replaced the DXCC listing in that issue, and the DXCC Listing has never returned. The DXCC Challenge list has now been removed and replaced by the 5 page 160M DXCC List (what do we need this for with its limited number of participants). The rest of the 32 page Yearbook contains DXpedition related articles like we get every month in How's DX. There are many DX reports that contain this kind of information and we don't need the DXCC Yearbook to just get more of it. Let Bernie do it in his column, and put the DXCC Lists back in the Yearbook. It is what the Yearbook was all about a few years ago, and it should be returned to that status. Re: [DX-CHAT] DXCC Yearbook
Mike: I couldn't have expressed it better than you have. DXCC has a 40+year (that I know of) history and it is the pinnacle of DX awards. I don't participate in DXCC Challenge as it takes way to much time to make a dent in the standings. More power to those who do like it. I have, however, put 15 years of my life pursuing a high position on the DXCC List, and many others have put many more years in the same pursuit. Some people become SK's before the get to the top of it, and that may well happen to me. When you become a SK and your call sign ceases to be active, you fall off the list. It is a badge of honor to be high on the list, and the ultimate distinction is to reach the top. That remains my goal. The DXCC List in the Yearbook is our report card in this pursuit and it, if nothing else, should be in the DXCC Yearbook. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. You and I are not alone in this feeling. Sincerely John Owens - N7TK -- Original message -- From: Mike(W5UC) Kathy(K5MWH) [EMAIL PROTECTED] AMEN John: Last year when I complained that the annual DXCC listings were missing, a part of the explanation I got verbally from a particular League official, was that the DX Challenge is now the premier DX Award in the league DX program. Pardon my French, but BS. That's a matter of opinion. Challenge may possibly be attracting more attention, but Challenge is the newest big thing. I would expect that there would naturally be a flurry of new activity there. DXCC, however, is still the original, and IMHO, the most prestigious of the DX awards. (don't challenge me with the merits of all of your favorite awards; I don't want to hear it) I also, don't know who, when, decided that the Yearbook needed to look like Parade Magazine in my Sunday paper, with a lengthy review of all of the news I saw on Fox News this past week. Please, just take it back to it's original form and leave it alone. It really would be nice if people would quit trying to discover a way to destroy the few remaining traditions we have left.
