[Dx4win] Antenna expert Jerry Sevick, W2FMI, SK
From the CQ newsroom... Jerry Sevick, W2FMI, became a Silent Key on November 29 after a brief illness. Sevick was a renowned authority on antennas and transmission line transformers, and was active on the air until just days before his passing. He was 90 years old. Sevick is best known among hams as author of Transmission Line Transformers, Building and Understanding Baluns and Ununs, and The Short Vertical Antenna Handbook. He was also a prolific author of magazine articles in both amateur and professional technical media. Jerry attended Wayne State University on an athletic scholarship and was drafted by two professional football teams, but he became a U.S. Army Air Corps pilot in World War II and was introduced to radio and electronics while in the military. He also discovered ham radio, which he often said changed his life, as he changed career goals after returning from the war, going on to earn a Ph.D. in applied physics from Harvard University. After teaching at Wayne State and working as a local weather forecaster for WXYZ-TV in Detroit, Jerry went to work for Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey, where he retired as Director of Technical Relations. For those in the New Jersey area, a memorial service is scheduled tomorrow, December 2, at 10 AM, at Fellowship Village, 8000 Fellowship Rd., Basking Ridge, NJ. [Dx4win] DX4WIN closing unexpectedly
Hello All, I've also been puzzled/plagued by this problem, and with discussion and help from Jim, AD1C it's been determined that my particular issue was/is related to a special call that's in the database and only for a certain time period. If I enter W5ADC the program will instantly close and will require rebooting. As it turns out, there is a W5A special call that is valid from a particular date forward. My W5ADC entries date from the 50's and when program looks for W5A it isn't smart enough to continue with the DC and crashes. (;-). The fix in my case is to enter W5DC and then back-space and add the A. Perhaps this is the case in your situation. 73! [Dx4win] A strange Bug continues
My thanks to all who have responded with possible causes, questions, etc. Lotsa knowledge here, and that's why I asked the question. It seems unlikely that it's a key malfunction matter, as it ONLY occurs with a W5Axx call entry ... not with a 5Axx or any combination of letters surrounding the 5 ... and not with any other number/letter combination. It only happens with W5A. Remember, I've now entered about 15K QSO's and this is the only problem I've seen. I haven't connected another keyboard ... I will. The one in use is a Logitec cordless. Related to a key logger? I doubt it, as the computer in question is almost never on line, and is used only for DX4WIN. The computer's OS is XP and it has Norton 2007, Spybot and Ad-Aware software that's updated and run once a week ... about the only time the machine's on line. The only other on line activity is to visit the Elecraft site for updates to my K3. The laptop that works OK has the same OS and software ... they are almost mirror images of each other. I don't view the program as crashed as one respondent termed it. The A keystroke just instantly returns me to the open desktop and then I can restart he program normally via the DX4WIN icon. All data is then current through the last auto back-up no more than one minute prior to the closure. Thank you all for your efforts ... I'll let you know what/if I find. 73! I think this depends on one's point of view ... My DX4WIN log starts in 1951 and I haven't claimed credit for any QSO's ... for anything ... other than for a given location and/or call. When I moved from Florida to Colorado, I started over with everything, for example. My five years as /MM don't count for anything, but my shore-time operation from home does, from my point of view. I -CAN- search the log by date, of course and this enables me to determine what I accomplished at a given location. I wouldn't want to claim my 1953 KZ5 that I worked from Oklahoma for credit here in Montana, for example. I do realize that today's lax rules allow such, but my personal rules don't. (:-)) 73! [Dx4win] Re: Programatically inserting County into DX4WINfiles(Alan Zack)
It seems that almost everyone these days either owns a GPS RX or knows someone who does, so it should be pretty easy to find one's real grid square. I've recently entered 54 years of old logs into DX4WIN and know that I've lost many potential credit grids simply because NYC or Podunk isn't a valid location for the purpose of tracking grids. Ditto for the contact that's moved across town a year after that 1952 QSO. It goes without saying that all the fuss over grid squares really isn't all that inmportant to many/most of us since a VUCC award is based on only VHF/UHF contacts and I dare say there aren't many VHF/UHF operators using the program. But I still track 'em anyway . (:-)) 73! Ken Kopp - K0PP
[Dx4win] County identification
That's a good point about a station NOT being located in the county of his address. Happens all the time and I don't know a fool-proof way to avoid it. One can always ask the operator's actual county location during the QSO, and I've done this sometimes. Another problematic situation for logging programs is the cities that are independent entities and can be claimed for ONE adjoining county. DX4WIN has no (apparent) way to flag these for future determination. I'd welcome a way to put a notation or perhaps a symbol in the County field that's not used elsewhere in the program to flag/search for such an entry. Yes, I know one can put a note in the Notes for the QSO field, as I now do to log the operator's city. The program needs a dedicated city/town/county field! The ability to log and track counties is the ONLY reason I initially purchased DX4WIN. 73! Ken Kopp - K0PP [EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[Dx4win] RE: K0PP and eQSL
There's nothing wrong with making a profit, and I didn't say there was. When something is sold it is assumed that the buyer will receive something of value and an e.QSL doesn't have value. There's no gold standard to back it up or underwrite it. It has no value outside the eQSL business environment. I don't understand why anyone would pay to download, and ... I assume then print ... a qsl that is of no use. You can, of course ... for a fee ... claim (read buy) various awards from the e.QSL company. e.QSL's are like the money in a Monoply game ... pretend QSL's. At least for my $2.00 bill and an s.a.s.e I (usually) receive a legitimate, recognized QSL that I can take to the bank. A stack of e.QSL qsl's is perhaps akin to counterfit money. Stuff your mattress with it, but don't expect to buy anything with it. Anyone want a rare DX QSL? I'll send you anything you want via e.QSL! They'll accept it and pass it on to you ... for a fee. Just don't expect it to be recognized anywhere else. I have about 13K QSO's ready to dump into LoTW. It's taken me several years to enter 54 years of logbooks into my DX4WIN. There's no way I'm going to give them to e.QSL to sell to others. BTW, 10-10's another BIG money maker! I only wish I'd thought of it! (:-)) 73! Ken Kopp - K0PP [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Each of us will have different standards to hold ourselves to. The Notes for this QSO is where I enter the QSO's town info, BTW. I don't count contest QSO's for ANYTHING beyond the scope of the contest. A Frequency field where I could enter 7021, 28003 would be NICE!. Perhaps there could be a field that could be used like a wild card and be assigned a name that would meet one's individual need. [Dx4win] County question
Teemu, Some US cities are not part of a given county. This is especially true in Virginia ... Missouri and Maryland come to mind also. They are defined as Independent Cities. Under the rules for CQ's county, award one of these not in a county cities can be counted for ONE of the adjacent counties. Unfortunately DX4WIN makes no provision enter Independent City or maybe IC in the County field, so you'll always have some QSO's with blank counties and have to remember that these are not simply QSO's that are waiting for a county to be determined. A word of caution ... there are a few stations who have mailing addresses that are not in the county the station is located in. I have a US Postal Directory of counties that is no longer available and I can look up the county of a city if anyone needs this information. This would enable us to take care of the mater at the time of entry of the QSO and therefore an empty county field would be the only ones waiting for the county to be determined. I can't speak for Paul, but I don't like this for two reasons: 1. Now there will be more than 3077 entries in the county file. How will you know when you're done? 2. Independent cities do indeed count for the county they are in/adjacent to. By doing this, you are treating them like they do not count at all. I think DX4WIN is fine the way it is. It is up to the operator to have the proper documentation in-hand to associate independent cities with counties. The USACA record book probably has this. N4UJK's county maps also have the list on the inside cover. An active county hunter should probably have one of these anyway. 73 - Jim AD1C -- Jim Reisert AD1C, 7 Charlemont Court, North Chelmsford, MA 01863 USA +978-251-9933, [EMAIL PROTECTED], http://www.ad1c.us
[Dx4win] External database verses qrz.com on the internet.
Hi Jerry, I can tell you're blessed with the ability to access the Internet on a full time basis. (:-)) Some of us are actually limited to dial-up access where 48K is FAST, and that renders the telephone unusable to other's in the house. Some even pay $.10/minute to access QRZ.com. When I complained to the ARRL about removing contest results from QST, I was reminded that everyone has DSL these days ... Yeah, right ... 73! Ken Kopp - K0PP [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[Dx4win] Call look-up window
I've solved -MY- problem with getting the call look-up window to update with each new log entry. All I had to do is read the book ... sorry for the bandwidth. I'd just upgraded to 6.03 and had assumed all my settings would remain from 6.02. 73! You did a Control P and out came your label. I see now the latest version of the RAC has several different options of printing labels, ASCII, Windows, and General. Then after you select your method of printing from these 3 options other options come up. I wonder what other people use and what is the preferred method amongst users. I have not tried this yet and would appreciate any pointers from those who have. TIA 73 Garry Shapiro wrote: John et al: Rod, WC7N points out that if one right-clicks in the Callsign/Mgr Lookup window, or presses Alt-M while that window is active, the contents of the window are copied to the QSL Mgr window and the callsign is displayed in the entry box. It may still be necessary to edit out non-address info, such as lat/long, grid square, county, etc. but this eliminates a select/copy/paste operation! BTW, Rod and I are corresponding with K1XN about the optimum settings in the Preferences/Ext Data window. Neither Rod nor I have a checkmark in the (EXE) path, but, following Rod's advice, I have entered C:\GOLIST\GOWIN32.DLL in the (DLL) path and enabled (checked) it. I think we are getting closer. Garry, NI6T Garry, I have the same issue with RAC 2004 with respect to getting address labels. What I do is, is to enter the call in the QSL manager window and then hit F3 to get the data from RAC. I then select the portion of the data I want to use for the address and copy it using cntrl C and then close the RAC data window. Then in the QSL manager window, I hit cntrl E and paste the address data that I copied previously. This works, but is pretty cumbersome. If you find a better way, I sure would like to know about it. I am thinking that it is this way because there is a lot of extraneous data that comes from RAC that is not pertinent to the needed address. ___ Dx4win mailing list Dx4win@mailman.qth.net http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win -- __ Alan Zack Amateur Radio Station K7ACZ Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Quality Engineer, The Boeing Company, Retired Aviation Chief Warrant Officer, U.S. Coast Guard, Retired U.S. Coast Guard, Always Ready, Always There Every hour, Every day, Around the Clock and Around the World SEMPER PARATUS http://gocoastguard.com

XP automatically installs the necessary drivers but then deletes the onboard sound card (built into the mother board). I would check this first. Possibly the system turned off the onboard card in the bios. You might check this when you next boot up. It could also be that XP just changed the default to the one you just added. You can check this by going the same route as above except rather than selecting system, select sounds, speech and audio devices where you can set the preference for which card is the default card. 73 Stan, N3HS -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Tony Lord Sent: Friday, June 04, 2004 9:03 AM To: dx4win@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Dx4win] second sound card I am wanting to try these digital modes after years on SSB/CW! [Dx4win] Input of logdata from paper log into dx4win
Jeff, Sorry, don't know of a way to avoid the obvious. Just finished about 7200 Q's ... all manually entered from 13 ARRL log books spanning 1978 to present. Not fun, but the job's done. Next is my earlier logs/calls going back to 1951 . (;-) 73! Ken Kopp - K0PP [EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[Dx4win] Input of logdata from paper log into dx4win
Larry, others ... Why bother with the effort of entering the data from your logbooks into Excel and then moving it into DX4WIN? It would seem that the effort would be just as well spent on direct entry into DX4WIN, since you'd be entering the same data. Unless you have another use for the Excel file in mind 73! [Dx4win] Newbie question
Is there a way to enter that a QSL has been sent, WITHOUT entering a specific date? I'm the guy with 12K+ manual entries under way and I have no idea when most QSL's were sent ...only=20 that they were. In most cases they were stockpiled and sent to bureaus at intervals. I suppose a ghost date could be entered ..?? I think a simple SENT field with Y/N would be better than having to enter a specific date. 73! [Dx4win] Frequency Logging
If the answers to the following is in the manual, please forgive=20 me for asking ... I'm a very newbie and just getting acquainted=20 with the program. =20 As indicated in a previous posting, I'm disappointed to find there aren't fields for entering CITY, NAME and FREQUENCY. If I enter these items in the NOTES FOR THIS CALL field can I search/sort from this field ... i.e., can I search for James or Podunkville or 7058? =20 Reading the frequency from the radio is of no interest, although I use CT and have the ability to do so. There are several radios involved, too. I also have thousands of contest Q's that I don't plan to enter/import, as I don't consider them of value beyond the realm of the contest. I would not use them for any awards, for example. I'm just interested in transferring data from 51 years of logs and=20 12K+ 3x5 cards into a sortable database. Paul, if you're reading=20 this ... is there hope that such changes might be coming, or should=20 I abandon the 500 or so Q's I've entered and go to M/S ACCESS? A small thing ...I'd like to use 3.5 or 3.9 instead of (just) 3.7 for 80/75M, or even better, change this field with a real frequency=20 entry field. Thanks all for listening, and ... 73! [Dx4win] Fw: Frequency/name logging
Add me to the list of those REALLY wanting a dedicated=20 field for frequency, i.e. 7034 instead of 40M. Ditto for=20 Name and City/Town. The goal is to sort by keying on Bob or Podunkville, etc.. Perhaps a couple of user defined fields would work. My entries start in the early '50's, and therefore QTH data from current databases=20 is of no use. I'm a new user with 12K+ QSO's recorded on individual file=20 cards and I've only entered 250 or so of them so far. I'm=20 disappointed at not being able to enter frequency, name and=20 location, and will most likely abandon DX4WIN and set up=20 a database in M/S ACCESS like I started to do initially. =20 I bought the program based on the ability to track counties,=20 never considering that I wouldn't be able to sort other fields=20 as well. It seems to be a fine program, but (apparently) won't do what I want to do. I shudda investigated in more detail. 73!
