two time periods open for the contest to benefit Amateurs on the West
coast. The available time periods are 8:30 to 10.30 PM EST or 8:30 to
10:30 PST (0130 to 0330 and 0430 to 0630 UTC). You may operate both
time periods; but you may only submit a log for ONE time period.

This month's Sprint will be held on 80 Meters ONLY. The suggested
starting point for participants is from 3.555 MHz to 3.565 MHz and there
abouts. Please be considerate of non-contesting FISTS members who
congregate around 3.558 MHz !!!

Those who wish to initiate calls, please use "CQ NA".

The exchange is RST - SPC - NAQCC Member Nr. (for those who wish to
participate that are not NAQCC members, simply substitute the member
number with your output power. Please use a "W" to indicate that you
are sending a power output figure!

A bonus is awarded as follows:

If you use only a straight key for the entire sprint, multiply your
score by 2.

If you use only a bug for the entire sprint, multiply your score by 1.5.
If you use a keyer, keyboard, or computer, there is no bonus multiplier

ALL amateurs may participate; but only those using QRP power levels may
compete for awards.

For details - please check: http://www.arm-tek.net/~yoel/sprint200603.html

[Elecraft] Re: K2 KBT2 Operational Question?

2006-03-13 Thread wayne burdick

Hi Allan,

The battery switch only disconnects the battery. It has no impact on
supplying power to the radio.

With an old (4+ years) battery installed, and plugged into external
power,
what would be the nominal reading off the K2's internal voltage meter?
On my

radio #309, I only show about 12V, power supply is providing 13.8.

If the voltage on the K2's display reads 12 V even with the battery
switch OFF, then either the K2's voltage monitoring circuit is in
error, or your external DMM is.

If the voltage on the K2's display goes up to about 13.3 V or so with
the battery switch OFF, but is 12 V with the battery switch ON, the
battery is trying very hard to take a charge. If it gradually increases
to 13.3 V or so over about an hour, the battery may be OK. But if it
just sits at 12 V all the time, your battery may be unable to charge.
In this case it should be replaced.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Errata

2006-03-13 Thread Kevin Rock
One error this week. I copied the call just fine. But then I transposed
two characters and then cut and pasted it so the same errors shows up
twice. Maybe that should be counted as two errors ;) But I wanted to get
to soldering and did not go over the lists again for accuracy. I did
study the punctuation however.

The error?
K5TE - Jay - CO - KX1 - 969

Should really read:
KT5E - Jay - CO - KX1 - 969

Close, but not close enough.

Just before I went to bed I ran through my rough notes from EQP. I made
more contacts than I thought! I had fun too. Maybe next year I will try
to spend more time at it and work more than three bands.

Sorry for the break in the daily Elecraft news.

[Elecraft] Off top post Re:FT1000mp

2006-03-13 Thread vk2nu
Apologies for the off topic post, but thought someone on the reflector with
more technical savvy than me could point me in the right direction. I've tried
the FT1000mp reflector, but was no help.

My FT1000mp failed on me at the weekend, that 18 and 21mHz bands have gone deaf
and I have no output power. The problem is sporadic, and the rig seems Ok, when
I turn it on cold, but after 20-30 minutes I lose these bands. The radio goes
deaf (+no tx pwr) between 14.500 and 21.999, and these frequencies correspond
to a band change relay clicking in, so I assume there is maybe a fault with
either a relay or possibly something in the LPF network corresponding to this
frequency range.

I'm looking at putting it into a shop for repair, but if it is simply a matter
of replacing a relay etc, I'd prefer to have a go myself.

If anyone is familiar with the radio, and has some ideas, please e-mail off
reflector..

"To get back on topic, I had a listen in the EQP at the weekend between
operation in the Commonwealth Contest. The only station heard was KD5OMS (from
memory), calling on 40m, but he had stopped by the time I had connected up the
K2"

Regards all and apologies again for the off topic post

Werner:
I went to the ICOM website and did a search on the SM-8 microphone. I
found the IC-718 uses the same mic, so I suggest you download the manual
for the IC-718 and you should find enough info about the microphone and
the connector to get it working on your K2. I don't think there's a
circuit diagram for it, but there is a pin-out for the connector on the
radio and you can figure it out from there. You can do the same for
other mics you may be interested in interfacing with the K2.

Hello all,

I'm putting together a polar bear Power point presentation and need some
PB pics from the following bears: VE3WMB, W9HZC, N5SEZ, N0TU and VE3WEH.
If any of these bears have some pics, please email them to me to include
in the Power Point Presentation. I would really like a mug shot of you
too. It's shaping up to be a nice presentation! Once it's finished, I
plan to show it at Atlanticon for general viewing.

To all the other bears out there. If you want your favorite picture in
the presentation, please email it to me. I will make the presentation
available after Atlanticon or around April. If you already gave a
donation to the EPA QRP Club for the "Polar Bears Gone Wild DVD," the
Power Point Presentation will be included on that disk.

To all those who haven't heard about the DVD, click on the link below
for information.

[Elecraft] Delaware Water Gap Hike/Radio Trip: April 15-16

2006-03-13 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all!

Look for N7UN, WA3WSJ and maybe NU3E to hike the DWG and play radio.
We plan to start the hike on the AT near the Delaware River at the NJ
line. From there we will hike into the DWG also known as Worthington
State Forest. We will climb the AT some 900' and camp some three miles
into the Kittatinny Mountains at a campsite with a view. We should end
up at an elevation just over 1300' overlooking the Delaware River. On
our way to the campsite we will hike along Dunnfield Creek with
waterfalls etc. I will also hike the extra mile or so and visit Sunfish
Pond as I would like to see it too. Talk about a scenic trip! So look
for us playing radio and having fun April 15-16. As usual look for us
near the qrp frequencies. I ,hopefully, will have my 4-band board in my
K1 by then - hi!

Although I purchased a 30m kit at the time I got the KX1 and KXAT1, I never did
get around to installing it. However, if you are concerned about desoldering,
you should know that the new 80 & 30 meter kit does require desoldering a few
components from the KX1 board, in addition to removing the existing 30m kit.
(Only one of the removed parts gets re-used and in this case Elecraft supplies
a spare in case you destroy it). The desoldering is not difficult, but does
require some care. Elecraft recommends using a good vacuum desoldering tool.
I got by using some very small (0.1" wide) solder wick; however this is risky.

[Elecraft] PTT Signal Question

2006-03-13 Thread Kevin Shaw
I'm in the process of designing a USB interface board for my K2 and I have a
technical question concerning the "/DOT-PTT" signal in the K2. The signal
goes into Port D of the PIC processor. PTT is grounded when the microphone
is keyed yet I don't see a pull-up resistor on the signal. I believe Port B
of the PIC has internal pull-ups but not Port D. Is there a pull-up on that
signal somewhere on the schematic that I'm missing?

Thanks,

Re: [Elecraft] KX1 signals peak at low audio beat frequency

2006-03-13 Thread Martin Gillen
Hi, Mike.

I noticed exactly the same thing here. In fact the
passband ripple of my KX1 is pretty bad, 600Hz is
actually in a trough not a peak! And when I narrow
the filter to the narrowest setting it centers on
around 480Hz.

Neither of these is a fairly significant issue in
practice though. If I have occasion to use the filter
in its narrowest position then I zero beat first then
use the RIT to move the signal down to 500Hz before
closing the filter to its narrowest position.

Most of the time my filter stays in one of three
positions:

5 oclock - fully open - Quiet band.

12 oclock - halfway open - Fair amount of QRM.

9 oclock - about 2/10 open - In the 9 oclock
position the audio peaks (to the ear) at 600Hz
so this is the most useful position for zero-
beating.

I almost never close it right down (7 oclock position)
however I did last weekend when I had a station come
on 100Hz away from my QSO and he couldn't hear me.

In this situation I use the RIT control to send the
wanted signal to 500Hz after zero-beating at 600Hz.

Does that help?

By the way Michael VE3WMB mentioned before that he
has the same ripple pattern in the ten-tec scout
and it may be a feature of the Jones filter design.

After all the component count in the KX1 is tightly
controlled and there are tradeoffs because of that.

2006-03-13 Thread Dan Barker
So sniff it!

If you don't have a network sniffer (most don't), you can use another PC (or
laptop). Configure Hyperterm to look like a K2, hook up the cable, and tell
the logger to do the spot. The "commands" will appear on the screen!

If the software won't do the spot without first communicating with the K2,
you may need to rig a splitter for pins 5 and 3 (sig gnd and TxD FROM the
logger), but don't split out pin 2, it will just confuse the issue.

btw, documentation or the vendor's input is a better choice - OR - write
your own macros, then you'll know what they do and can make them do what you
want.

You Still haven't said what you WANT the macro to do. I'm just guessing what
is desired.

RE: [Elecraft] K2 SPLIT AND DX CLUSTER SPOTS WITH LOGGER 32 & N1MM

2006-03-13 Thread Chris Page
Thanks to Don, Dan and Rich for their explanations of this problem.

Whilst noting what Don says about Logger 32 not sending the TX and RX
information for each of the K2's VFOs, and that being the reason it
will not work effectively, it cannot be the reason why it won't work
with N1MM. N1MM does send the TX and RX frequency information for
each VFO, at least whenever the spot on the DX Cluster contains a TX
and RX frequency, ie split operation on 40 and 80 metres CW.

N1MM does not have a Radio Debug window like Logger 32 and so I am
unable to see what the actual command that is sent by N1MM to the K2.

By the way Rich, what logging program are you using? It will be nice
to know of one that doesn't cancel the split option on the K2.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 SPLIT AND DX CLUSTER SPOTS WITH LOGGER 32 & N1MM

2006-03-13 Thread Rich McCabe
I would say you have a software issue and not a hardware one. I have no
problems setting splits on the K2.

If the command you listed is the one for split it will not function. They
are not doing the FB so its useless.

K2 has a split button emulation "SW26" but appears they are not using this.

I am not familiar with your logger program and although its possible to use
software to do the splits, they are not getting it done without setting the
VFO B.

Thanks for your quick reply Dan.

Logger 32 has a "Radio Debug Window" which shows the commands and
replies going between Logger 32 and the K2.

When I click on a DX spot, Logger 32 sends the following message to
the K2:

Set Radio Freq/Mode : FR0;FA0001808;MD3;FA0001808;

Re: [Elecraft] Filter alignment question

2006-03-13 Thread Don Brown
Hi

Here is a way to check the alignment of the filters. Assuming a 600 Hz
sidetone tune to 4.000 MHz in CW normal mode You should hear the 4 MHz
internal oscillator as a 600 Hz tone, Switch to each filter and the tone
should not change frequency by more than a few hertz. Then switch to CW
reverse and go back through the filters. Again the 600 Hz tone should not
change. To check the SSB filters select LSB and tune to 4.00060. You should
hear the same 600 hertz tone then check each SSB filter and the tone should
not change. Now change to USB and tune to 3.99940 MHz and check for the 600
hertz tone on each filter. If you do not hear the correct tone on any of the
above tests then you need to recheck the filter alignment for that filter.
You may have it set on the wrong side of the filter slope or may need to
move it slightly. Use spectrogram to re-align the filters after first
setting them to the values listed in the manual so they are in the ballpark.
You should move each filters BFO frequency slightly even if it is correct so
the firmware will recalculate the sidetone offsets.

Then the longer answer That's how Logger 32 works. It will not

Logger 32 is a fully featured program with more stuff than I use - the

2006-03-13 Thread Dan Barker

Set Radio Freq/Mode : FR0;FA0001808;MD3;FA0001808;

Let's see what that is SUPPOSED to do (ref: KIO2_Pgmrs_Ref_revC)

FR0;
Sets receive VFO to A (What about transmit? Don't you need an "FT1;"?

FA0001808;
Set VFO A frequency (What about VFO B?)

MD3;
 Set Operating Mode to CW

FA0001808;
Set VFO A frequency again (interesting - maybe the MD3; sometimes resets
the VFO? - Then, why the first FA?)

Anyhow, to rule out a firmware glitch, you should do the above commands
manually, and with Hyperterm, and see if they perform differently. They
shouldn't.

I powered up my K2 (first time since we moved, last Saturday) and it's
busted. Probably mechanical, but I don't have time to look now. Poweron I
get a horrible buzzing in the speaker, regardless of the AF pot setting. I
immediately unplug. Will inspect before debugging. However, you may want to
try those commands yourself.

You need macros that accurately reflect what you want to do. BTW, I'm not
sure what you expect it to do. When you click on a spot, should it set two
frequenies? Should it set one and set the other some fixed offset from it?
Should it read the current offset and apply that to the freq in the spot?

I agree "it" shouldn't change the SPLIT/NOR mode. ("it", in this case -
Sorry Mr. Clinton - means the software/K2 Combination).

RE: [Elecraft] K2 SPLIT AND DX CLUSTER SPOTS WITH LOGGER 32 & N1MM

2006-03-13 Thread Don Wilhelm
Chris,

The K2 is operating properly - apparently Logger 32 programmers wanted Split
to be cancelled or they would not have sent that string of commands.
The KIO2 Programmers Reference clearly indicates that the 'FR' command
always cancels Split mode.

To work effectively with a program in Split mode, the program must be aware
of which VFO you are using for transmit and which for receive. My guess is
that Logger 32 did not want to deal with that potential for confusion
because the transmit VFO can be quickly changed by a tap of the front panel
button or by a KIO2 command - many things could easily get mixed up.

RE: [Elecraft] Filter alignment question

2006-03-13 Thread Don Wilhelm
Mike,

Which oscillator are you referring to as "local Oscillator"? If you are
referring to the BFO, then it should be different from LSB to USB because
that is the way the sidebands are switched.

If you are referring to the VCO, then you must be retuning if that changes
between LSB and USB - if there is a need to re-tune to maintain zero beat,
then yes, a filter alignment is in order, and perhpas a dial calibration
also. Full, detailed instructions for setting the reference oscillator and
doing a dial calibration and filter alignment can be found on my website

[Elecraft] Filter alignment question

2006-03-13 Thread info4mjs

Hi,

I was monitoring the K2's local oscillator frequency and I noticed that as I
tune to WWV in the various modes, that the LO frequency is different at zero
beat. I expected an offset (w/respect to SSB) in the CW mode but I expected
the LO to be the same at zero beat whether I was in LSB or USB modes. It isn't
so I am wondering if something is not aligned properly.

Any insight is appreciated.

[Elecraft] K2 microphone question

2006-03-13 Thread Dr. Werner Furlan
I am going to finishing the SSB board (with the QRP-Project modification
included) in some days, as soon as the parts I need arrived.
I have several microphones I could use, so maybe you can give me some
advice.
I have one Icom SM-8 microphone - is there a circuit diagram around for this
type of microphone? I read in the manual of the K2 that some information for
microphone jumpering should be on the Elecraft website, but I did not find it
yet.
Then I have a Kenwood hand microphone (from a VHF SSB transceiver),
and a Heil Pro Headset.
I have also read about the good idea to make a plug for each type of
microphone from discarded IDE plugs. (several around here)
Maybe there is a list of microphones with my SM-8 type listed?

That is the first question. If the documentation doesn't say, and the vendor

[Elecraft] K2 SPLIT AND DX CLUSTER SPOTS WITH LOGGER 32 & N1MM

2006-03-13 Thread Chris Page
For general day to day operating, I normally use the K2 in SPLIT mode
(with the flashing V over A on the front panel) and have the
Secondary Menu option set to PER.

I use Logger 32 connected to the DX Cluster through the Internet and
have noticed that when I click onto a Cluster spot, the K2 correctly
goes to the frequency and mode of the spot, but the SPLIT option is
cancelled and the K2 returns to its default setting of no SPLIT.
This happens whether the Secondary Menu SPLT option is set to NOR or
PER.

Is this the norm, and if so is anyone aware of a mod that can be done
to prevent it happening, please?

It is especially annoying when a DX station working split is spotted
on the Cluster. The K2 is correctly sent to the DX station's
transmitting frequency, and after using the A/B button to find the DX
station's listening frequency, I transmit only to find I am
transmitting on the DX station's transmitting frequency because the
SPLIT option has been cancelled and I have forgotten to switch it
back on again.

Of course, this can be got round by hitting the SPLIT button after
clicking on the spot, but in the heat of the chase for the DX
station, I often forget to do this. In any case, in a well designed
radio (like the K2) it should not be necessary to have to remember to
do this.

Although I don't use the K2's RIT option, the same thing happens with
that, it is cancelled when you click on to a Cluster spot.

I use N1MM Logger for contesting and the same thing happens when you
click on a DX station in that program. The problem must therefore be
with the design of the K2 and not the logging program.

I searched the Elecraft Reflector Archives for an answer and found
that WA2DGD asked the same question in July 2001. Larry was using
the DX4WIN logging program and the answer provided was to use the
TS850-TS950 option in DX4WIN for setting the radio, but Logger 32
only has a KENWOOD ALL option, which is the only one that works with
the K2, and N1MM Logger specifically has an Elecraft setting.

Thanks for any help.
