[Elecraft] [K3] Boot loader failure (solution)

2009-04-22 Thread wa6riv
I had an update failure this morning.

MCU firmware file hmcu0311.hex verified
Reset K3 to enter Boot Loader

In the Elecraft K3 Utility, I tested communications. 4800 bps
I selected default. Keep speed at 38,400 bps
Load error occurred.
I reset my communications to 4800 bps and all worked fine.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Boot loader failure (solution)

2009-04-22 Thread Dick Dievendorff
These messages don't indicate a failure.

The K3 Utility sent a command to the K3 to reset itself to enter the boot
loader. It's a progress status message, not an error message.

I considered wording the message to Resetting K3 to enter boot loader, but
I think I'll just remove the message instead.

I apologize for any confusion.

Well worth reading for a better understanding of the How to of APPs.

Too, a cheap but effective looking tool from Harbor Freight is noted.

Re: [Elecraft] Anderson Power Pole Turtotial and Tool Suggestion

2009-04-22 Thread Don Wilhelm
Gentlemen,

I would be very cautious of a crimp made with a tool that looks like
that Harbor Freight model.
It appears to produce a 'point contact' type crimp rather than a crimp
over a large surface. Crimps of that nature can lead to high resistance
contacts (and resulting heating and even fire hazard) due to the small
area of copper that is crimped.

If one should use a tool like that, crimp lightly to hold the wire and
then solder well to assure a good connection.

Quicksilver Radio (qsradio.com) -- and probably others -- has 4 and 8
pole latching housings for APP's. Also Anderson has a PP75 locking

typical (a la K3) chassis mount APP, but great for mid-span connections.

Re: [Elecraft] Anderson Power Pole Turtotial and Tool Suggestion

2009-04-22 Thread Don Wilhelm
Terry,

Properly assembled 30 Amp power pole connectors require 6 pounds of pull
to disengage/engage.
If your are not staying mated, I would suggest that you look for a
source of pulling on the wires and/or be certain your APPs are properly
assembled. If you used a crimping tool that distorts the tabs, that
alone could be the reason for a loose connector. I suggest you use a
proper crimp tool, or solder the connections (without getting solder on
the outside of the barrel). If you are using soldered connections in a
high vibration environment such as a vehicle, be certain to reinforce
the wire for about 2 inches away from the connector (2 layers of heat
shrink) to keep the wire from flexing - constant flexing will cause the
wire to break right where the point that the solder has wicked to.

Re: [Elecraft] Anderson Power Pole Turtotial and Tool Suggestion

2009-04-22 Thread Gary Hinson
I bought the ratcheting crimper from Powerwerx, slightly
 cheaper than West
Mountain Radio and no worry about bad crimps.

I just replaced the Power Poles that I had messed up on my first attempt by
*slightly* squishing the sleeve with pliers (just to hold the wire, I
thought) and letting too much solder flow onto the blade part. No matter
how hard I pushed the wires, the connectors refused to snap into place in
the shells. Scraping off the excess solder didn't seem to help. I pushed
so hard with pliers that the wire and insulation started to bulge, making
the problem worse not better.

I should have followed the instructions more carefully!

Second time around after cutting off the first attempt, I just pushed the
wire home in the connector sleeve, held the fitting vertically in a bench
vice and carefully soldered into the sleeve part, with no attempt to crimp
or squish it first. The wire fits quite snugly into the sleeve so that the
soldered joint seems plenty strong enough, probably stronger than the Power
Pole to Power Pole connections anyway. Time will tell! This time, the
connectors easily pushed into the shells and snapped right into place as
intended. Job done.

Gary ZL2iFB

PS For other ZL builders: Jaycar Electronics sells 30A and bigger Power
Pole clones for about NZ$5 a pair but the packets don't currently include
the little pin that locks the red and black shells together. I guess you
could superglue them instead.

[Elecraft] K3 Utility for Mac OSX new features not working

2009-04-22 Thread KM5Q
I just downloaded the new K3 Utility 1.2.3.18 OSX version

I downloaded FW Beta 3.11 through my Mac and it worked fine, as before.

CONFIG tab showed up all buttons in gray, so I was unable to save my
configurations, etc. I never had this problem before. I had tried it
immediately after doing my download.

TERMINAL tab
CW Memories -- I typed in a CQ and it transmitted OK. I can't find how
to edit it. Nor could I find a way to save to the Utility memory -- I
quit and restarted and my CQ was gone.
Nor does it record into the K3 Menu, which is what I really want. Is
it supposed to do that?

than swithing the attenuator in and out.

With excellent help from Elecraft support, I was able to pinpoint where
the signal was lost. Turns out an RF choke had fallen off the KRX3
board. As luck would have it, I hadn't thrown out the bags yet, and the
choke was still in the bag. The KRX3 works now.

I suspect Elecraft will want a word with the contractor who supplies the
boards :-)

But I'm feeling somewhat like an owner of a British car in the 70's.
Next time I'll look for loose parts in the bags *before* putting things

Actually there is a plastic locking bar (Blok-Lok) that has
pins that fit through the holes in the mating connectors and
keeps the connector housings in alignment as well as preventing
pull-aparts. We use them quite a bit in our EmComm and vehicle

[Elecraft] RS232 Noise

2009-04-22 Thread Mike Harris
G'day,

Just in case anyone is interested.

Today I was investigating the effectiveness on a local 6m low level signal
of the various combinations of NO PREAMP, K3 PREAMP ONLY, PR6 ONLY, K3
PREAMP + PR6 in preparation for a 6m EME test.

All was as expected then I turned on the PC. With the two preamps in line
there was a 1-2 S-point increase in background noise (SSB bandwidth).
This extra noise vanished when I removed the RS232 cable from the K3.
The cable is actually the one I made up for the K2.

Touching the shell of the connector to the K3 shell didn't restore the
noise, only when actually inserting the pins did it come back.

No noise being carried on the two audio leads to/from the PC so no big
deal the disconnect the RS232 during the moon run.

No further investigations to date.

Regards,

Mike VP8NO

Hi Don,

That concern was addressed in the article: It also has, in addition to a
properly sized anvil/die, a forged round forming section that is ideal for
fixing mistakes.

A bad tool is a bad tool.

I'm guessing you're like me, crimp and solder. A bit overboard, but does
provide that warm fuzzy feeling. Check, double check and then recheck any
critical and potentially dangerous connections.

Cheers,

Regards,

Mike VP8NO

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Utility for Mac OSX new features not working

2009-04-22 Thread Windy Dankoff
I got it solved, David. I don't have internet in my primitive shack,
so I had downloaded the software in my house, using K3 Utility. Then I
closed (to sleep) my Powerbook, walked out to the shack, and connected
it to K3. I still had Utility open from before. Apparently, Utility
needs to see the K3 when it starts up, otherwise it seems that the
Configurations AND the help menu are dead.

This time I started Utility while connected to K3. It now works like a
charm, loading my CQ perfectly into K3 memory. And the HELP is
magnificent. No problem now!

Thanks so much.

 Windy,

Yes David. all the buttons on the
 CONFIGURATION tab are disabled.

I just did several firmware loads and went directly to the
Configuration tab. All of the buttons were enabled. Next time this
happens, try clicking on the buttons anyway and see if they are
still functional even though they appear disabled. I'll continue to
look into it. There might be a bug somewhere.

Thanks for the instructions on saving CW Terminal Memories.
I looked under HELP/ CW memories but found no advice. Is
there some form of instructions yet?

The CW Terminal Memories are described on the Terminal Help page
and on the Edit Menu Help page. The CW Memory Editor (not the same
as CW Terminal Memories) is described on the Edit CW Memories page
in the Configuration section of Help.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Utility for Mac OSX new features not working

2009-04-22 Thread Jack Brindle
If you start up the application without the K3 turned on or attached,
you don't need to quit the application to get it to talk to the K3.
Just turn on the K3 (or plug it into the RS232 adapter), then go to
the Port pane and click on the Test Communications button. If all is
well the Mac will display an alert box telling you so. Close the alert
box and go on with your K3 tasks.

This is a pretty cool little application. Thanks, Dave!

[Elecraft] K2 issue

2009-04-22 Thread Vic K2VCO
Tonight I decided to check out my K2, QRP configuration, for Field Day. I tried
it on 40,
20 and 15 meters, and it put out a solid 14-15 watts, drawing about 3.5 amp.

Then suddenly it went dark. The fuse in my rigrunner had blown. Silly me, I had
plugged
the K2 into a slot with a 2 amp fuse. I replaced the fuse with a 5 amp one, and
started it
up again. But now I can only get about 10w maximum when the power control was
turned all
the way up! Current draw is now about 2.15 a.

So, did I blow one of my finals? And if so, could the blowing of the external
fuse be the
cause?
