Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Is the K2 old technology?

2009-12-13 Thread Leigh L. Klotz Jr WA5ZNU

You might try reading the list on Nabble, where the K2 and K3 posts are
separated.
Posts originating from the K2 forum on Nabble start with [K2] and are in the
K2 forum there.
Posts that come from the mailing list eventually migrate to the K2 forum
with a day or so, but won't have K2 in the subject line unless the author
puts it there.

See http://n2.nabble.com/K2-f365793.html for the K2-only messages.

The general Elecraft messages remain in
http://n2.nabble.com/Elecraft-f365791.html and those are relevant to K2
owners as well, as are some of the other sections (mini-modules and other
small-sized products, Ham related stuff, etc.)

Re: [Elecraft] K3 shuts OFF over 95w...

2009-12-13 Thread Reinaldo Leandro
Just check the connection at the power supply. Mine was bellow my operating
desk and after a few days of frustrations, looking for RFI, installing
ferrites, RF chokes I finally discovered that the nut at 5 way binding post
was loose. I had the right voltage on standby but not enough transmitting.

[Elecraft] Problems with KRX3 Install

2009-12-13 Thread K6LE
Been assembling my K3 kit and, until today, it has been going beautifully.

Got it to the point where it was a K3/10 a couple of nights ago and got to play
with it, then Saturday I made it in to a K3/100 fired it up and and had a ball
learning some of the great features and playing in the 10M Test.

Today I decided to install the KRX3.

Everything seemed to go well until I got to figuring out what to do about
antenna input. I had already installed the RF In jack and had the wire in the
chassis but after some research I decided that with my two antennas - a 102'
doublet and an R7 that I would rather have the scheme that allows me to connect
to the ATU and use the "other" antenna as the antenna for the Sub receiver.
So, I ran the cable from the KAT3 board and taped up and secured the RX Antenna
cable.

I buttoned it up and went through the set up procedures.

At that point I had something weird going on with the Main receiver. Every few
seconds it seemed like there were static crashes that kicked up the AGC and
sent the S meter to max for milliseconds. I don't know if that was related but
after I powered it down a couple of times to scratch my head it seemed to be
normal. But, the Sub hears nothing but white noise. Not the hiss of a dead
receiver but it sounds like it is listening to a dead band. No amount of
switching antennas or even disconnecting the antennas makes any difference in
the background noise. Even if I put both of them on strong signal the Sub
hears nothing but noise.

I have done all the configuration I can find in the manual a couple of times
but still have a dead parrot! (pardon the Monty Python reference but at this
point I am trying to keep my sense of humor).

I've re-calibrated the Synthesizer, rechecked the filter set ups and set the
KRX3 to ANT=ATU.

Before I take the covers off and recheck my install is their anything I should
check from the outside?

In the meantime I will enjoy the radio as is and continue exploring it's
amazing features tonight, not up to messing with it anymore today!

I use Eudora 7 Mail Client, and believe others may have some of the
same abilities.

I set the filters to look for K3 in the subject or in the body, and
if so it goes in the trash as read.
K2 is the next filter so it puts those in the Elecraft mailbox.
Those that don't have K3 or K2 go in the In mailbox.

It isn't a foolproof system, but it really helps me seperate out the
K3 messages.

Re: [Elecraft] Is the K2 old technology?

2009-12-13 Thread KG3VTomZ
Paul,

I see you got some good answers but just wanted to add some of my
experience. If you are interested in building a kit you can not beat the
K2. K3 is a great radio but is not really a kit. The K2 you build starting
from a box of parts. One of the greatest things about the K2 kit is that
there are almost no wires, so you are not building wiring harnesses (which
I do not consider to be fun). You are building boards and building up the
chassis. If there was a K3 kit that started with a bag of parts, there
would be no decision to make, but that is not the case.

If you mainly want a CW rig, I don't see how you could need anything more.
BUT if you want mainly a SSB rig, I would suggest you consider the K3
instead. K2 works fine on SSB, but some of the creature comforts could be
better.

As far as the reflector, some of us urged Elecraft to separate the K2 and
K3 lists in some way, but they have opted not to do so. As a result, this
is not the resource it used to be for a K2 owner. You can still get ALL
your questions answered here, so don't get me wrong, but you will drown in
K3 trivia if you just monitor the list, and there is no easy way to receive
only K2-related threads that I know of.

Go for the K2 and enjoy it.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for December 13th & 14th, 2009

2009-12-13 Thread Kevin Rock
Good evening,
Twenty meters was weak to me this evening; or at best one way. I could hear
the folks Tom worked but while I was calling those same folks could not hear
me. I seemed to be shooting right over them. The books say propagation should
be reciprocal. In practice, theory is not so accurate! The same is often true
with QSB of various types. However, forty meters seemed stronger. Even the
noise was stronger ;) But that is normal on forty.
I was receiving weather reports in the 50s while the temperature was
dropping where I was sitting. It had been sunny most of the day but during the
first net heavy fog rolled in. Not much breeze but the temperature had dropped
rapidly. I could feel it seeping into the house as I worked you all. I turned
on the space heater near me but it does not heat very rapidly. By the time the
second net rolled around it was more comfortable. Both the heater and the
extra logs I had tossed into the fire were raising the temperature in the
house. Currently it is more than warm enough so I am thinking of stepping onto
the deck to cool off a little!

I think I have the serial numbers correct but I am missing at list one rig
type on the twenty meter list. A fill would be nice ;) My pile of wood from
two years ago is almost gone. The ten degree weather of last week used it
rapidly. Luckily it was very dry hemlock so I burned it at the right time to
get the most heat per chunk of wood at the coldest temperatures thus far. Once
that pile is done I won't have to push my wheelbarrow so far. The lion's share
of wood is right outside the front door. That last wood I cut and piled is
further so my planning is working well. I thought I would get into next year
before I got to this year's wood but weather conspired against me. However, it
is a great time of year to spend at the bench.
   Until next week stay warm,

Re: [Elecraft] KPA100 problem

2009-12-13 Thread Don Wilhelm
Jerry,

That means U4 is not the problem, the problem is somewhere in the
rectifier stack and goes away when you lift the anode of D7.

Check both D7 and D8 for proper orientation (use the parts placement
diagram since the board silkscreen is covered). Check for a solder
bridge across the leads of C38. Be certain C35 is soldered properly.
If you lift the anode of D7 and place a 0.1 uF capacitor from the
"flying lead" of D7 to ground, what is the voltage at the D7 anode?

I know that did not fully identify the failure point, but hopefully it
gives you some clues.

[Elecraft] OT- MixW-Navigator-hanging TX

2009-12-13 Thread Craig WØLV

Has anyone had a problem with MixW 2.19 and Windows 7 hanging when a macro is
initiated?
My Computer system is 6 month old Gateway FX Intel Dual Core laptop with 4
GB of memory. I am running MixW 2.19, Windows 7 upgrade

At irregular intervals while trying to transmit my system will hang. The
PTT light comes on and the TX light on my K3 comes on but it does not
generate any audio for about 10 seconds. Just before the audio starts the
CAT light will cycle off and then back on and it produces RF and output.

I have reinstalled MixW and also tried 2.18 and same problem and then
reinstalled 2.19 again and still the same problem. Again I have 4 GB of
memory. Watched the system monitor during the process and I was running
about 10% CPU and a steady 1.48 GB of memory. I am also running Logic as a
log and even turned it off as well as all other programs.

Any suggestions on a work around or perm fix??? Please respond off
reflector

[Elecraft] KPA100 problem

2009-12-13 Thread n0jrn
Gang: I need some advise please.

I'm trying to finish my KPA100 but I can't seem to get beyond voltage tests
on page 46 of the manual.

I should be getting 90 to 150 V's at the junction of C77 & R11 but only
getting 47 volts.

I should be getting -5 to -25 V's at pin 8 of U4 BUT I'm only
seeing -4.1.

I did some research in the archives and came up with a few ideas.Checked
D1 - D8 and T3 pads. All diodes pass continuity test and T3 seems fine and
shows zero resistance between pads.

Checking the schematics prompted me to lift the anode of D7 to remove U4.
In doing this, the voltage at the junction of R11 came up into spec and
shows 150 V's.

This means that U4 is drawing the circuit down. SO, I sent Elecraft an
e-mail and Gary sent me a new MAX1406. Figured I would install it
and all would be good.NOT !

After installing the new U4,I rechecked voltage at R11 and found it is
still just 47 V's.

I've double checked orientation of U4, and it's fine. I was very careful
to observe anti static procedures when installing the new chip. SO, I'm
confused and not sure where to go from here.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks & 72: Jerry N0JRN

Re: [Elecraft] WM-2 operation

2009-12-13 Thread David Fleming
It sounds like your W2 is set to display PEP power. Use the 'Command Tester' in
the W2 Utility to send the "M" command to the W2. This will toggle between PEP
and AVG power. There will be software available soon to easily set all of the
W2's parameters.

[Elecraft] WM-2 operation

2009-12-13 Thread worsr
I am having trouble understanding the operation of my WM-2. When I select the
range manually, all is well and the meter functions as it should. However, if
"Auto" is selected, the meter seems to show a high peak reading upon initial
keying, i.e. with rig set to approx 100W output, the meter will show a peak of
about 150-160 W. SWR as measured by the meter is < 1.5:1. ALso, when "auto"
is selected, the 20W LED also lights up. None of my other meters behave like
this, and indeed, the WM-2 doesn't either when in "non-auto" mode.

Thanks for any help.

[Elecraft] Low audio from SUB

2009-12-13 Thread Paul
Since I got my K3 about 2 months ago, I have noticed that the KRX3 subreceiver
is about 1/2 the volume of the main. I've been over all config items and see
nothing out of whack. S-meter readings are the same. Is the SUB supposed to be
"not as loud" as the main RX?

You can read about how I have run my Perseus as a remote receiver using
Ham Radio Deluxe at:
http://www.astromag.co.uk/resources/G4AON_Perseus_remote_access_v2.pdf

An Elecraft K3 is just as easy to remotely operate, however beware the
menu can be accessed by remote...

In order to hear the radio you can use Skype for simplicity (lots of
folk use Skype and are familiar with it), you would need to set an oddly
named user account rather than your normal Skype name and set it to auto
answer and only to names in it's address book. IP Sound also works well
(http://ip-sound.software.informer.com/) but is not well supported. Both
are free.

My Perseus is not currently available on line...

[Elecraft] Front Pannel Hand Mic (HM2)

2009-12-13 Thread Rob Gault
I have a brand new K3 that I just completed this past week (with a
little help from the reflector, thank you!).

Now I am having a problem with the 8 pin mic connector on the front,
neither the Hand Mic nor the pro-set work with it (using the Elecraft
supplied adaptor). I was able to connect the mic from the headset to
the rear of the K3 and confirm that I can in fact transmit voice. I
have MIC SEL set to FP.H (I've also tried FP.L) and MIC+LIN ON. Is
there another setting that I am missing to enable the Hand Mic on the
front of the unit?

The PTT does work on the FP Mic input as I was able to use the Hand
Mic to key and transmit CW and SSB with the headset connected to the
back.

Thank you,

Rob

Re: [Elecraft] XV50, XV144, XV222 Assembly Manual

2009-12-13 Thread David Pratt
Many thanks to all who replied to my query about the vent holes in the
top cover of the XV144. There weren't any on mine, so I drilled some
over the Metox resistors in the RF power attenuator (R20, R21, R26,
R27).

With particular thanks to Johnny VR2XMC, I have now completed my mods to
the XV144 by adding a fan, similar to that used in the XV432 and
drilling vent holes in the base plate.

Although I am only driving the XV144 with 1mW from either the K2 or K3,
heating of the resistors was not a problem, but hot air is now coming
out of the top vent holes when I am transmitting.

Hopefully, the mods will enable the XV144 PA module to run cooler and it
will not shut down after I have been transmitting for more than a few
minutes.

[Elecraft] More on K# Shuts Off

2009-12-13 Thread Bill Davis Jr

In my case, it may be a more complex issue. The K3 PTT is keyed by my station
sequencer. (VHF/UHF/Microwave preamp and hot switch protection). When running
WSJT or Digipan the Sequencer is keyed by a OptoIsolator that is turned on by
the Com port from WSJT or Digipan. This "turn-on" is not as "hard" as a normal
switch or relay. I can force the K3 to stay in TX by doing a "hard" key of the
sequencer.

It is ODD since I never hear the Sequencer "chatter", it seems only the K3 TX
is dropping out. The K3 PTT is a RELAY contact in the sequencer. The K3 PTT is
via the rear panel 15pin connector... about a 30" cable to the sequencer. I
have yet to try a ferrite core on the cable.

Unplugging the MH2 Elecraft mike "solves" the problem, so that is fine with
me for the moment.

Sure having fun with the K3 80/40/30m QRP, 50/222/902/1296/10Ghz via
transverters Very Happy.

Re: [Elecraft] SDR-Radio v.1.0

2009-12-13 Thread Bruce Beford
The IF-Out port on the K3 is an RF-range centered at the 1st IF freq of
8.215 MHz. You cannot connect this directly to a PC soundcard and expect it
to work. Somehting like a SoftRock, SDR-IQ, or LP-Pan is needed to
downconvert the IF freq to the audio range.

[Elecraft] K3 shuts OFF over 95w...

2009-12-13 Thread Paul
Mike,
I had this exact same problem during CQWW. It turned out to be RF getting into
the K3 thru the contest keyer leads, which I had never hooked up before.
Wrapping all the leads with RF chokes/toroids fixed the problem...check to see
that you have not added something new recently. I also assume that if you have
a beverage connected to the Aux Ant, that you also have an RF limiter in that
line, as that can raise havoc with the K3 as power is increased--especially
true when you add in a linear amplifier.

[Elecraft] SDR-Radio v.1.0

2009-12-13 Thread Richard Meilstrup
SDR-Radio is the new program from HB9DRV (of HamRadioDeluxe fame) intended
for converting signals from an SDR-IQ radio (hardware) to be processed in
the soundcard of your PC. I have been playing with SDR-Radio and did not
manage to open Simon's own SDR-IQ via the Internet, but to some extent was
able to watch the rather impressive display on my PC-screen and hear the
signals (with a small delay) using the line-out on the back of my K3. Now I
wonder what would happen if I connect the PC-soundcard to the *IF-out port
of the K3 *using a stereo cable. *
 *Anyone tried this*?*

Re: [Elecraft] XV432

2009-12-13 Thread AD6XY

Not quite - but I can comment on the XV144. The stability is OK with the
crystal oven though not exceptional. It need to be left on all the time or
it will take a while to settle on power up. There is a jumper for that.

The XV432 is likely to be approximately 3x less stable than the XV144.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 shuts off

2009-12-13 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Make sure he's transmitting into a good dummy load for those tests.

The overvoltage protection on some supplies is easily tripped by RF getting
into it. Even if the antenna is some distance away, a voltage loop near the
transmitter can induce plenty of RF in the mains lines or through the rig
and supply cable.

If it doesn't happen driving a good dummy load, it's time to revisit
grounding, etc., at the rig and supply.

In my case, it was the K3 shutting down, not the power supply. The cause
was undervoltage. But once I
got a better power supply, the problem went away. I think both were
rated 25A, but they were clearly
very different.

You might have to wait some time David... See
http://www.astromag.co.uk/images/pf.gif which will give you some idea of
how slow USPS can be - at this time of year it might be slower! I can't
remember which of the USPS rates I opted for, I think it was the lowest
cost one. Parcel Force in the UK send out a letter asking for payment,
which slows the process significantly. By comparison, the fastest UPS
delivery option can have your goods on the doorstep in the UK in 4 days.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Simple Remote Control

Re: [Elecraft] K3 shuts off

2009-12-13 Thread Tom Hammond
Mike:

Sounds to me as if his P/S is going into a momentary over-current protection.

When this state occurs, it is in response to a request for the P/S to provide
current in excess of that for which it was designed to supply. For instance,
if the P/S built-in over-current protection circuit is designed to provide
22A (sightly more than the rated 20A) of current) but the device connected to
it is requiring 23A of current, the over-current protection will immediately(!)
drop the output voltage from 14 V down to somewhere around 0.3-0.6 VDC and
the resulting current will go to zero (or nearly zero anyway). You can
demonstrate this on a P/S with over-current protection by intentionally
shorting the two main power cables together.. BUT DO NOT DO THIS UNLESS YOU
ARE CERTAIN YOUR P/S HAS OVER-CURRENT PROTECTION BUILT-IN. Although most
'modern' supplies DO offer this feature, some may not, and shorting the leads
on a supply which did NOT offer it, might be somewhat DISASTROUS!!!

Anyway... if your K3 is asking for even a little bit more current than the
P/S can supply, the supply will shut down for an INSTANT... until it thinks
the overload has been removed (as when no excessive current is being drawn)
and then it'll normally immediately return to full output voltage/current
again. Of course, by that time, the K3 appears to have shut down and then
remained off (as a result of the built-in 'brown out' firmware in the K3!!!).
The 'brown-out' firmware senses when the K3 has suffered even an instantaneous
loss of power and will place the K3 into a state of suspended animation until
power is fully cycled off/on via the [POWER] button. It's a protective measure.

The solution to your friend's problem is one of two options:

  1 - Purchase a heavier-duty supply which can supply 25A
(intermittently) before
  it goes into over-current protection...

2 - Reduce requested power output (probably only required on certain bands
which require just a bit more drive to produce 100W output) and live
  with the existing P/S.

Personally, I'd run with option #1.

Now, to being able to SEE this problem, to confirm that it exists...

The switch from normal operation to over-current protection can be so fast that
neither meters nor digital displays will not catch it. Neither will
your eyes...!
BUT if you can hang a scope across the DC output from the P/S, set it
to a very
SLOW SWEEP SPEED, so you can see a single trace run across the
screen, and THEN
put the rig into TX at 100W of requested power, IF the problem is a momentary
over-current problem, you'll see the instantaneous drop of voltage
easily on the
o-scope trace.

Good luck,

Tom Hammond N0SS

Re: [Elecraft] K3 shuts off

2009-12-13 Thread Jim Wiley
Could be the power supply. Some regulated supplies shut down completely
if the overcurrent protection trips, and they have to be completely shut
down to reset them. Clue: is anything else connected to the supply, and
if so, does it shut down t the same time as the K3? If so, then it's a
power supply problem not a K3 problem. However, if not that, then (if
the rig is connected to an antenna when this happens) it may be RF
getting back into the rig or the power supply and and affecting the
control circuits in either one.

What happens if you try the test at lower power - say 60 watts? Do you
have access to another power supply, even temporarily? If so, try that
and see what happens. Depending on the band in use, the K3 might well
exceed 20A current draw and shut down the PS. A 25A or even a 30A PS
would probably be a better choice.

Used to happen to me before I got a better power supply. All 20 A
supplies aren't the same. I was able to run full power on some bands,
but on the worst band, I could only run 70W.

Tks for your pic, however that hand-strap, that I have sent website, has
a resistor of 1 mega ohm inserted. So I need to pay attention to mat
because has not that resistor.

Re: [Elecraft] Anti-static stuff to assemble K3.

2009-12-13 Thread Lionel Lhermitte
Hi David and all,

Quick reminder about anti-static stuff.
Your pad and hand-strap must NEVER be connected directly to the ground.
Between those and the ground a resistor of 1 mega ohm must be inserted.
See on the picture below, a yellow adapter (plugged) containing this
resistor.

at my apartment I have not a central earth connection, but some
electricity plugs (mainly from kitchen) have the earth cable attached to

terminals from mat and wrist strap to that earth connection from
electricity plugs ???

Best regards and till next email.
