[Elecraft] K3 Diversity antenna settings - wish
I want to set my K3/100 up for diversity reception using my main antenna (doublet) and a receive loop with with pre-amp. The K3 is fitted with a KAT3, KXV3 and KRX3. As I wish to keep maximum flexibility of antenna switching I do not want to use the AUX BNC for the Sub RX as it stops me from easily using either the main antenna or loop as Sub RX input. I don't want to be reconfiguring the K3 hardware as my needs change. The setup I have arrived at is Main RX - Ant 1 - Doublet Sub RX - Ant 2 - Loop pre-amp (with output switchable to RX ant input) This works, but obviously has the potential to damage the loop pre-amp if I accidentally transmit to Ant 2 connector. It would be nice if a Ant 2 TX inhibit per band were available. Is this possible ? Maybe there is a more elegant solution that I have missed. 73 Stewart G3RXQ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

You say the rear panel settings work - put those same settings on the FP mic menu and try it. If a condenser mic element works on the FP, then you must have Bias set on - turn it off for the HC-4 and set the range to H. You must have the Kenwood adapter to use the front panel connector. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Main RF Gain problem
Jim, The gain controls are potentiometers, not encoders, so yes, you could have a bad spot on your RF Gain control such that the resistance has a bump in it near the 9:30 position. If I turn down the Main RF gain S meter goes up as expected, the gain is heard to decrease and seen to decrease by Spectrogram. So far so good. When I keep turning the gain down the S meter will increase to S 30 (Rf knob position 10 o'clock) When the knob position reaches 9:30 the S meter drops to S6 and the gain comes back up both heard and seen by spectrogram. Further movement will decrease the gain to zero as heard and seen but the S meter stays at S6. Increasing the gain the reverse happens. This is true in all modes. [Elecraft] Macro to switch TX EQ settings
Rather than reinvent the wheel (and actually learn!), Im wondering if anyone has a macro sequence to switch between two TX EQ settings. I have a Heil Pro-Set Plus (HC4 and HC5) connected to the rear mic jack and am trying a couple of different mics connected to the front panel jack. I do have macros to select either the front or rear panel jack, but Id like to add the macro to clear the TX EQ when I select the rear jack. Similarly, Id like to add to the macro that selects the front panel jack to have specific TX EQ settings. Thanks for any help. Stewart Baker wrote: Main RX - Ant 1 - Doublet Sub RX - Ant 2 - Loop pre-amp (with output switchable to RX ant input) Stewart I'm still missing something in your setup. If you only have one TX antenna (i.e. the doublet) and one RX antenna (the loop), why not connect the loop to the KRX3's AUX RF. What is it that you believe connecting the loop to ANT2 is buying you? Surely it's not using the tuner since that would require putting RF into the loop which you said you don't want to do. I connect only TX antennas via PL-259 connectors and only RX antennas via BNC connectors. I have many TX antennas and use an external switch to route them to the K3 ANT1 input (I don't have a KAT3). I also have about 10 Beverages and an RX 4SQ. Using both RX ANT and AUX RF allows me to use my selected TX antenna, or any of the Beverages (externally switched) into RX ANT and the RX 4SQ into AUX RF. I don't need to worry about transmitting into my RX antennas because that's impossible to do since all RX antennas use BNC ports on the K3. Main Antenna (RX mode): TX antenna (ANT1) OR Beverages (RX ANT) selectable by tapping RX ANT. Sub RX: TX antenna (MAIN) OR RX 4SQ (AUX RF) selectable by toggling ANT in BSET. I still don't understand any advantage to using ANT2 for the loop and KRX3 input in your setup. Please explain in more detail what your reasoning is for doing that? There must be more to it than is evident in your original post. 73, Bill -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K3-Diversity-antenna-settings-wish-tp4207954p4208763.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Hi Barry, Oh dear... I hope Father Christmas brings me a new brain ! The problem is that I had convinced myself that there was only one input path into the Sub RX, and that came in via J92. In reality there is another path via the RF board. End result is that when I actually tried it (using the BNC) - it worked, just like everyone says it does ! My objective is to use all of this equipment simultaneously providing there is a way for all devices to receive the necessary data needed for operation. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Diversity antenna settings - wish
Hello, I think the main problem is about the MANUAL. I am considering to buy a K3, so I am asking something here in the reflector, something to other friends that owns a K3, and I downloaded what seems to be the manual http://www.elecraft.com/manual/K3_Owner's_Man_Rev_D5_Hi_Res.pdf But really not help too much about knowing the radio. In the past years I saw many radio manuals and they (more or less) are clear, with some DIAGRAMS or PHOTOS showing where you connect each item (mic, key, amplifier, antenna, RX antenna, etc, etc.. Here there´s nothing about that. Only a TEXT manual in English where we need to understand all about the K3, without any photo or diagram that will help us, no English spoken, or no tech or K3 builders, how to have all connected correctly. Seems that the manual was made for someone that know very well the K3, so for him/her is very clear if he/she read the manual, but when you do a manual you need to think that the manual will be reading for such a diversity of people so it must be as clear as possible. Yes, maybe you think that is really not necessary to have a diagram showing where to connect the mic. Well, is a manual, so no suppose things, just add it in the manual. All manuals have a photo where you see the ground connected to the terminal that say GND. Maybe you never stop reading it in the manual, but it must be there. 73, Jorge CX6VM/CW5W -Mensaje original- De: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] En nombre de Stewart Enviado el: Miércoles, 23 de Diciembre de 2009 12:58 p.m. Para: Barry N1EU; Elecraft Reflector Asunto: Re: [Elecraft] K3 Diversity antenna settings - wish Hi Barry, Oh dear... Re: [Elecraft] K3 + Palstar AT-AUTO + SteppIR Vertical + MicroKeyer 2
Tim, The K3 with the SteppIR and MicroKeyer 2 will cause no problems - the SteppIR does not transmit anything on the RS-232 bus, it simply listens. The MicroHam connects to the StepIR and the K3 connects from the SteppIR pass-thru to the K3. I am not familiar with the Palstar AT-AUTO, so I can't comment, but since you said the manual referred to 'handshaking', that may be an indication of difficulty, OTOH the K3 is not an Icom either, so it may be possible that it will work with the K3 in a similar manner as the SteppIR. 73, Don W3FPR w8jj wrote: My objective is to use all of this equipment simultaneously providing there is a way for all devices to receive the necessary data needed for operation. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Main RF Gain problem
Hi Jim, Are you by any chance running the RF gain calibration with the Linux or Mac version of the K3 Utility? An earlier release of the Mac version and the current release of the Linux version seem to have some problems with RF gain calibration. Everything seems to go right during and immediately after the calibration procedure, but once you turn the rig off and back on, you get reduced gain and the s-meter doesn't go full scale at min RF gain (as Wes described.) That's not exactly the symptom you described, but I don't know what else might be messed up in this case. Anyway, my point is that if you're using a Mac or Linux machine to do the RF gain calibration, you might want to try it with a Windows machine to see if it fixes your problem. 73 -- Joe KB8AP On Dec 23, 2009, at 7:19 AM, Jim Byers wrote: Wes, The s-meter indications are really no more than a nuisance. I noticed from the documentation that the K3 Key out line can handle up to 200 VDC and 5 amps. I assume this means that when the key out is closed that it can handle 5 amps of current. So, I am curious, what kind of switch mechanism is used for TR switching. Is this an actual relay or is it some kind of transistor switch. I am guessing transistor based switch but this is where I started wondering about the 200 VDC and 5 amp capability thing. Or, am I totally off base. Re: [Elecraft] Raised K3DSPUPGD price?
Roland, Yes, 2 way trip of the DSP board is not worth while for us, DXs. Fortunately, changing 2 capacitors is easy job and hope that LPF plate will be available alone. And there is another solution, if you need better low frequency response. Simply plug the headphones in the loudspeaker jack. 73 and Happy Holidays, Val LZ1VB Did I miss something? When was the price for the K3DSPUPGD raised? A couple of days ago it was still $69,95 and today I saw it is $89,95. Too bad there was no announcement about. I would have placed an order before. Is this an actual relay or is it some kind of transistor switch. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Diversity antenna settings - wish
Jorge - On page 4 of the manual you mentioned is a diagram of both the front and back of the K3, with all connectors labeled. The circled numbers for the front panel diagram are explained in the text on pps 4-6. Look for numbers in curly braces {19}. The rear panel (with another diagram) is covered on p 17. There IS a learning curve with the K3, because there are so many user configurable settings, but once you get it tailored to your liking, you don't touch them much. There are IMNSHO some things that could be better/more explained, but usually a note to this reflector will get you an answer in an hour or two at most. Re: [Elecraft] K3 + Palstar AT-AUTO + SteppIR Vertical + MicroKeyer 2
Tim - I have a SteppIR yagi, and I ordered the 02114 cable from SteppIR to use with the K3. The ICOM cable won't work. I don't use it, but I'd guess you would go from the data out jack to any other device you wanted to control. 73, Mike NF4L w8jj wrote: My objective is to use all of this equipment simultaneously providing there is a way for all devices to receive the necessary data needed for operation. I'm interested in having the SteppIR vertical and a wire antenna fed with 450 Ohm ladder line available at all times on the same or different bands. Is it conceivable for the vertical and the AT-AUTO to pick up frequency/band data independently from each RX (main and sub)? I'm also concerned about data port availability as the MK-2 connects to the K-3's RS 232 and ACC ports. How will the other devices get data? The SteppIR box has a data out port that my prove useful in this scenario. My K-3 was ordered on Monday (replacing Icom 756 PRO III) and I have the rest of the equipment listed above in place. I'm trying to work through the theory of operation with a K-3 in the mix. One major difference is that the Palstar is set up to handshake with Icom radios using the external tuner port on the radio. [Elecraft] K3 needs survey -- firmware and application software
Hi all, As you probably know, we keep a list of firmware features and improvements to be added as time permits. Many of the most-requested changes were made over the past several months, keeping pace with the demands of the fall/winter contest season. (A few that come to mind: switch sequence automation via macros, improved DVR interaction with PTT, main/sub audio mixing, improved NR, lockable transmit controls, and many enhanced remote-control commands.) As we head into 2010, we'd like to refresh the master firmware list based on your input. Items already on the list have priority, of course, but this is a great opportunity to let us know what else is missing or could be improved. Our goal is to make the K3 as easy to use as possible, while providing the advanced features you need for specific operating situations. We're also planning a renewed effort to assist application software developers. If your ideas for improvements involve changes to both K3 firmware and a favorite application, we'll pass it along to the developers and work with them closely. We're making great progress on the P3 Panadapter and other new products. [Elecraft] Toroid Holder from a Clothespin
Just had a call from a prospective client for a K1 build, who was (as are many) hesitant about winding the ever-elusive little toroid inductors. I lost him as a client when I told him about my little clothespin tool for holding the core while winding, and wasn't sorry at all to have spoiled that sale, since he's now encouraged to tackle it himself, and that helps develop the pool of talent for building, one of the (sometimes unstated) goals of kits. This is a tool I made at JPL, when I had to wind some little inductors for our Line Impedance Stabilization Networks [LISNs] in the EMC Lab, and have repeated and used for Elecraft building, since the smallest cores can be hard on the fingers. Here's my blog entry about it, with a photo; http://wa6dzs.blogspot.com/2009/12/toroid-clip-from-clothespin.html. Use it in good health, and enjoy! Re: [Elecraft] K3 needs survey -- firmware and application software
I'm a heavy user of diversity (99.9% of the time). I have many different RX antennas which have differing amounts of gain. For diversity to work correctly, I need both antennas to present the same RF levels to both receivers. I can make gross adjustments with ATT/PRE, but for fine tuning I would like to adjust RF Gain with a single fader (balance) control as has been implemented with SUB AF for AF Gain, instead of having to adjust the concentric RF Gain knobs. Page 59 of the manual: SUB AF - If set to BALANCE, then the SUB AF GAIN control becomes a main/sub AF balance control when the sub receiver is turned on (including diversity mode). In this case MAIN AF GAIN controls the AF gain level for both receivers. When SUB AF is at 12 o’ clock, both receivers will be at full volume (main left, sub right). If SUB AF is rotated fully counter-clockwise, you’ll hear only the main receiver. If it’s rotated fully clockwise, you’ll hear only the sub receiver. At intermediate settings you’ll hear both. A balance control is very useful for contesting and split operation. But it can also save a lot of AF gain control adjustment (i.e., matching main and sub), since MAIN AF controls both main and sub receiver audio. Please consider a SUB RF menu option for balancing RF Gain. 73 Merry Christmas! Hi Wayne and Elecraft team, First of all a bit thank you for the fun I had with the K3 over the last year, including all the software changes and the involvement of all of us in the new developments of the K3. I must say this is outstanding and what puts Elecraft on a different level than any other manufacturer i the market. This must have had consequenses of increased market share and results of Elecraft as a company and I hope the company keeps this position of excellence. That is what makes a difference from a good and a great company. As for future developments and wishes, the challenge lays in not listening only to the one that makes the biggest noise but to the community as a whole. Some kinde of internet ' poll' would help for sure. The frequency of new releases, about once a month, is perfect to me. Also it may be an idea to adress certain users directly by e-mail to ask for input. Anyway, it is the discretion of Elecraft to prioritize what to do first. I wish the team a very Merry X-mas and look forward to 2010hope there is still time to ship my XV144 before the end of the year :) Dick PA3CW -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K3-needs-survey-firmware-and-application-software-tp4209832p4209977.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I have done the open the transmit frequency software update. The radio will work on all freqs outside the Ham bands EXCEPT between 7.55Mhz and 8.99Mhz. Tried to check in to the SHARES net for the first time with my new K3 on freq aprox 7.6Mhz and got the BND END message. Any other MARS operators can confirm same issue or is it unique to my rig? Re: [Elecraft] Raised K3DSPUPGD price?
I installed the K3DSPUPGD this past Saturday. It took about 30 minutes including finding the dropped washers from the floor. The results are delightful. The sound is cleaner and not nearly as fatiguing as before particularly on narrow bandwidth CW. Mine is one of the early K3s. The cost is very reasonable considering the results. Two items here: RX EQ by mode - or at least one separate setting for CW! Build as much flexibility and functionality as humanly possible into the P3, even if much of it is optional. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Key Out line
Phil, There is no direct relationship between the KEYOUT line and the T/R switch in the K3. The T/R switch is fully electronic, no relays to clack and clatter. The KEYOUT line goes to ground before the onset of RF - and the delay can be adjusted in the menu. It is normally used for keying an amplifier. There is also a Keyout-LP line on the ACC connector that operates at the same time, but the current capability is only 10 ma. Yes, KEYOUT can handle up to 200 volts open circuit voltage and 5 amps of closed (keydown) current. 73, Don W3FPR Phil Hystad wrote: I noticed from the documentation that the K3 Key out line can handle up to 200 VDC and 5 amps. In my short time ( 2 weeks ) with this wonderful radio I have had several wow, look at this! moments on most days. The one feature that I have come to wish for, so far, is the ability to have two or three TX Equalizer set ups and the ability to make comparisons by switching quickly from a set profile and back to Flat. Also, using a couple of different mics and or modes would be easier with profiles perhaps modeled after the band width/shift Norm, Norm 1 and Norm 2 system. BTW, Wayne, thanks for asking! [Elecraft] K3 Filter Option Questions (revisited yet again)
One of the things that I have not yet decided is the filters to get for my K3 order. I am firm on getting the 400 Hz 8-pole filter (80 percent or so CW ops). But, I like to scan the band looking for signals with a wider filter, say around 1 to 1.2 KHz. Do I need to get the 1 K filter. If I remember right, I can set DSP filtering to about 1 KHz which may be good enough or is there an advantage to the 1 KHz filter. Also, is there a good reason to swap out the 5-pole 2.7 kHz filter for the 2.8 KHz 8-pole? I presume this gives the filter sharper skirts so you can cut off those close stations a bit better but I am curious as to how much better. Since the dollar cost differences in decisions regarding filters is not that great I would prefer answers that ignore the cost issue. So far, I am planning on getting the following filters with a ? on the 1 KHz 8-pole and 2.8 KHz 8-pole: 400 KHz 8-pole 1 KHz 8-pole ?? 2.8 KHz 8-pole swap for 2.7 KHz 5-pole ?? 6.0 KHz 8-pole 73, phil, K7PEH __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Filter Option Questions (revisited yet again)
Currently I have the 8 pole 2.8 KHz filter and the 250 Hertz cw filter. One of my friends, W5XZ, who is considering buying a K3 asked me about filter choices and especially whether a narrow cw filter. My reply was the It depends. Do you want to work near strong local signals without blocking? I f so, then you need a narrow crystal filter for cw. I chose the 250 Hz filter and I'm happy that I did as I can work very close, like within 200 Hz to strong locals like K0RF and, in Chuck's case, even blank his key ( Yaesu?) clicks at the same time. I'm debating about getting the 400 Hz cw filter or the 500 Hz version from Inrad. Some of my operation is on relatively empty bands like 17 meters right now and I use the SCAN feature on cw; 250 Hertz or less seems too narrow for this most of the time unless the scan rate is really slow using the 1 Hz frequency increment but 400 to 500 Hz is a wide as I ever use for that. For my purposes, I see no need for a 1 KHz cw filter but I think this depends, to a considerable degree, on the strength of other in-band signals and how close your ham neighbors are. I don't work much ssb and so far, my neighborhood big signals all use the opposite polarization but this my change. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Filter Option Questions (revisited yet again)
Phil: I'm also primarily a CW operator. I chose the 1 KHz filter for normal wide CW contest use when I want to be aware of stations around my run frequency. I chose a 1.8 KHz filter for SSB contesting based on recommendations from friends whose opinions I respect. The 1.8 kHz filter is also helpful for wide CW. I also have the 400 Hz and 250 Hz eight pole filters. I don't think the 400 and 250 are enough different to recommend that configuration. If you're an RTTY enthusiast, the 250 Hz filter may be just what you need. Upon reflection, I perhaps should have gotten the 200 Hz 5-pole instead of the 250 Hz 8-pole. I ordered this on the first announcement at Visalia, and went with my best guesses. I chose the 2.8 kHz filters for steep skirts and also to avoid matching issues with the sub receiver's filter. I'm not sure they were necessary, but it's all subjective. I didn't want to be in mid-contest and wish then that I'd spent a relatively few dollars more for better skirt selectivity. One reason to choose the 2.8 8-pole over the 2.7 five-pole is if you plan on using a sub receiver. You should either match the 2.7 kHz five-pole filters or get two 2.8 kHz filters. I chose the latter. I don't require ESSB, AM transmit, or FM, and my main RF board is full with 250, 400, 1000, 1800, and 2800 eight-pole filters. I have fewer filters on my sub receiver. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Main RF Gain problem
Jim I've had exactly your problem (and sorry for rather late response). I'm using Windows (so it's not that) and it's not the encoder/pot, it's the rf gain calibration. I've posted on this before and there's been a change to the rf gain setup since f/w 3.27. Wes has also mentioned that fets have a somewhat uncontrolled gain characteristic. I redid the rf gain calibration but using factory defaults rather than an external sig gen and that cured it. Only trouble now is the S meter over-reads above S9+10 by up to 20dB. But I can live with that. It's interesting (spooky?) that you have #1189 and I have #1198. Yes! I don't use the K3 internal keyer for exactly that reason. Bryan, Zl1NI .. The K3 built-in keyer is very good as it is, but I miss the automatic character spacing of my favorite external keyers (CMOS Super Keyer, Logikeyers, Accukeyers, etc.). Re: [Elecraft] MARS operation problem
Jack, Transmitting between 7.5 and 9 MHz is not permitted because we have to enforce a minimum frequency distance from the 8.2 MHz IF (and its associated IF rejection trap on the KANT3 or KAT3 module). An excluded first IF region is a fundamental limitation of a down-conversion design. The TS-480 can transmit in this range because it uses up- conversion; we used down-conversion to provide much better receive performance and allow for narrow crystal filters. The only way around it would be to use an external transverter. I can give you details if you're interested. The K3 will work well on all other MARS frequencies within its tuning range. 73, Wayne N6KR On Dec 23, 2009, at 1:07 PM, W4GRJ wrote: Yes you are correct, just got off the phone with Elecraft ...it is due to the IF at approx 8.2Mhz. I'e been using the same (now old) homebrew Accu-keyer with auto character spacing since the articles were originally published in QST. I'm so used to the timing, it's hard to send decent CW otherwise. Except with a Lightning Bug, although some may not consider the swing decent :-) It would be a nice-to-have feature. I've ever used the internal keyer on any radio I've owned since they are generally a featureless afterthought included to put another checkmark on somebody's list. Re: [Elecraft] K3 needs survey -- firmware and application software
For external amplifier and external high power auto-tuner use, I'd like to see the followiong: 1) External ground that automatically puts the K3 into a low power CW tune mode. This is normally a command from an external auto-tuner that comes after an amplifier. 2) When the low power tune mode input is externally supplied (from a remote autotuner), you should have the option of disabling the amp-key output of the K3 since you want to tune your autotuner with low power. This is not necessary with some autotuners. As an example, you can pass the amp-key from the K3 thru the MFJ-998 and the MFJ-998 unkeys the amp for you before it starts to tune. But other autotuners (like the LDG AT1000PRO) don't have this feature. 3) Power level saved per antenna per band. I have my amplifier set up on ANT2, since my amp doesn't have 6 meters. This way I can operate barefoot on ANT1 thru 6 meters. When I put the amp in-line I use ANT2. If the power could be saved differently on ANT2, then I could properly set the amp drive per band and it would always be correct. 73, Phil - AD5X __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] [K3] Low and High Power Cmd
Is there such a command. I had this radio for about a year and I have to keep turning the knob to go from 100 watts to five watts. I don't recall in my book a cmd for it but was wondering if there was a firmware upgrade. I use my amp every day and before I use it, I always go to five watts on the radio, tune the antenna and then go back to high power to push the amp. I have to keep turning the knob and it's a pain. At the rate I'm going, this radio will have to sent back to Elecraft for a new knob/tumbler. This could get expensive. Is there something on the number panel to get this command up? It takes a bunch of turns to go from high to low power. -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/Low-and-High-Power-Cmd-tp4210880p4210880.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
